In this report, the effects of anode-production variables, such as aggregate coke sizes, pitch binder content, and baking cycle, were investigated. A small alumina reduction cell proved effective in evaluating anodes prepared from commercial materials and from lignite coke and pitch. Compressive strength was found to be the physical property most significantly influenced, but it did not appear to affect anode consumption. Specific carbon consumption, that is, the ratio of carbon in the anodic gas to carbon theoretically oxidized at the anode, was used as an index of anode consumption. It was found that an anode made with lignite coke and commercial pitch was very low in consumption; however, anodes made completely from lignite but by a different fabrication method showed high consumption and anode deterioration. Microscopic examination of anodes after electrolysis showed evidence of higher consumption at low current densities, and was useful in judging overall anode quality. Based on the physical properties of the anodes and their consumption during electrolysis, lignite can be a suitable material for anodes, provided the proper fabrication conditions are used.

Some of the problems associated with drill core evaluation of alluvial tin deposits and correlation with plant-scale recovery are discussed. Panning churn-drill cores on site tends to undervalue such deposits because of failure to recover completely all the available liberated cassiterite, and secondary gravity processing may also fail to give an accurate determination of potentially recoverable tin. However, by using a combination of heavy liquid separations, x-ray fluorescence analysis for Sn, and normal methods of reflected and transmitted polarized light microscopy, a quantitative assessment of alluvial material can be carried- out. The information obtained may include the liberation characteristics and distribution with size of the cassiterite, the nature and quantities of the various gangue minerals, and the amount of potentially recoverable cassiterite in the material as compared with the amount locked with light gangue minerals and hence difficult or impossible to recover. In addition, an analysis of the efficiencies of the various gravity processes, such as panning, jigging, and tabling, used to determine "recoverable tin" in the alluvial material, can be carried out. A detailed example is given of this type of investigation, in which an assessment was made of a churn-drill core from Uncia, Bolivia.

The Hatch Mott MacDonald/Bechtel Joint Venture team is designer and construction manager for the 5.25-mile Tunnel Segment of the overall 16-mile Silicon ValleyRapid Transit Project, which extends the existing Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) system southward from Fremont to San Jose. The Tunnel Segment includes twin boredtunnels, mined cross passages, and three deep station excavations situated in highlyvariable ground, high ground water table, and a dense urban setting with high-risebuildings adjacent to the largest excavation. This paper will discuss design challengesthat have arisen with the excavations and the proposed solutions.

The creation and maintenance of a healthy working environment in surface mining operations require sustained efforts in pursuing advanced research initiatives toward the development and deployment of powered haulage technologies. This paper contains progress summary on a frontier research in truck dynamic control, vision and collision avoidance. This research is required to provide solutions to challenging problems regarding operator visibility in truck haulage in a surface mining environment. The paper focuses on truck control kinematics and dynamics, truck-haul road interactions, intelligent truck sensing, intelligent truck collision avoidance system, integrated system for situational awareness, augmented visualization and operator interface, and field testing and error variance modeling of developed technologies. A sensor suite of four subsystems, including front-side stereo-camera, front-side Doppler radar, close range sonar proximity sensors, and rear-side camera system have been recommended for developing a 360° truck operator vision to allow safe operations. This research initiative is significant because it will provide a strong basis for developing technologies to improve truck haulage safety in surface mines and construction sites.

EQUIREMENTS of montan wax for industrial use in the United States before World War II were met by imports, nearly all of which came from Germany. An important industry for extraction and refinement of this wax from certain brown coals had developed in Germany. At the beginning of the war, montan-wax imports were shut oft, and American industry was forced to rely largely on substitutes. Since the war, relatively small amounts have been imported from Czechoslovakia. Because of the shortage of montan wax at the close of the war and the fact that industry in the United States had to rely on foreign sources in the past, this investigation was started in 1945 to determine probable yields of wax from domestic lignite. Results of the investigation and the properties of extracted waxes are described in this report. Also included in the report are discussions of the occurrence and geology of lignite deposits of the United States from which samples were obtained for wax extraction and the petrographic composition of lignites, particularly in respect to those components that contribute to wax yields.

The design philosophies for piles in unfrozen and frozen soils are compared, and their similarities and differences are underlined. It is shown that in frozen soils, the long term behavior of a pile is difficult to predict, because of inadequate knowledge on the behavior of adfreeze bond with time, and on the value and variation of the lateral normal stress acting on the pile. Both of these problems are discussed in the paper on the basis of laboratory tests and theoretical analyses.

These may be of interest to members examining the collection of ores, etc., from Mount Lyell, which is a feature of the Victorian Gold Jubilee Exhibition, and may have some value as geological records. No. 7 and No 8 are analyses of samples of footwall rock from the Lyell Tharsis mine. No. 7 is hard, crystalline, fine-grained, and of homogenous structure. It has a dark-red colour, due to ferric oxide (Fig 1); and was taken from a place eight feet east of the ore body and about half way between the 50 feet and 100 feet levels. No. 8 is from the same excavation and from four feet east of the ore body it is softer than No. 7, being easily scratched with a knife-blade, of a deeper dark-red colour, and has a slaty cleavage.

The Getchell Mine is located on the east flank of the Osgood Mountain Range in the Potosi Mining District, Humboldt County, NV. Mining in the area first began in 1883 for copper, lead and silver in skarn-related deposits. Tungsten was discovered in the skarns in 1916 and was mined sporadically until 1957. The first major discovery was made in 1933 when two Winnemucca prospectors, Edward Knight and Emmett Chase, found gold at the present site of the Getchell gold mine. In 1934, after a small amount of preliminary prospecting, the claims were purchased by Noble H. Getchell of Midas, NV. The Getchell Mine Inc. was organized and exploration and development work began on a broad scale. Major funding was provided by George Wingfield and investors he assembled. Laxalt described Wingfield’s immediate history prior to his financing of Getchell as follows.

Steele: The global nuclear power industry is a major contributor to the electrical needs of the world. Though generation by nuclear reactors has primarily attracted attention through the reactor accidents at Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, nuclear power continues to quietly and safely provide power to a growing and power-hungry world population. As of March 2008, 30 countries were operating 439 nuclear power reactors. Nuclear power plants provided about 15 percent of the world?s electricity production in 2007. France leads the world in nuclear utilization, with 77 percent of its power coming from nuclear plants. And Lithuania, Slovakia and Belgium each derive more than 50 percent of their power needs from nuclear plants. For much of the developed world, nuclear generation has already been contributing significantly to the supply of electricity. Additionally, 34 new nuclear plants are under construction in 14 countries. Leading the rush to build new nuclear generating plants are China, Russia and India. Each of these countries is building six new nuclear power plants. These 18 plants, totaling almost 12,000 MW of generation capacity, will require about 7.25 kt (16 million lbs) of U3O8 for their initial fuel load and will consume about 2.45 kt/a (5.4 million lbs/year) for the rest of their operating lives. The rest of the world, outside of the United States, has used nuclear power as a viable and economic generation alternative since the commercialization of utility nuclear reactors. And current activity supports the strong future of the nuclear alternative internationally.

The additional information that Clarke and Taylor (1982) provide about the important but poorly documented Ardlethan deposit is, of course, very welcome. However their contention that structural considerations, in conjunction with petrology, alter the interpretation of the mineralogical and geochemical data presented previously (Scott, 1981) is not accompanied by adequate supporting evidence. Indeed characteristics of the orebodies studied invalidate their arguments.Heterogeneity between matrix and fragments is not a problem in the South Cherry and Ardwest orebodies because most samples are comprised entirely of interlocking hydrothermal assemblages with a fabric and mineralogy that is uniform through both former breccia fragments and matrix. In hand specimen, the rock superficially resembles altered granite and, as indicated by Clarke and Taylor (1982), a brecciated texture is difficult to discern. In thin section, relict brecciated textures can be observed as localized changes in the grainsize or in the distribution of minerals that outline former breccia fragments (P. J. Eadington, 1982, personal communication).Because of the intense brecciation and comminution of rocks (fragments < 10 mm are usual) in the South Cherry and Ardwest breccia bodies, hydrothermal recrystallization was complete, resulting in homogenization of fragments and matrix. Furthermore, the amount of sample analysed (-100 g for drill core and 2-3 kg for hand specimens) is sufficiently large to be representative of both former breccia fragments and matrix. The Carpathia and Stackpool orebodies, with their abundance of sedimentary fragments, have alteration superimposed on a heterogeneous fabric, and were not studied. Thus the problems of differentiating between fragments and matrix (Clarke and Taylor, 1982) are irrelevant to the particular orebodies described in my paper.Within the alteration halo, which is several hundred metres wide (Paterson, 1976), the very uniformity of the alteration assemblages implies that subsequent, postmineralization brecciation is of only minor significance.Indeed tourmaline pipes in the Ardwest pit are less than several metres across (Clarke, 1979) and produce minimal alteration in the surrounding rocks. Therefore the interpretation of the mineralogical zonation is not compromised by the recognition of several periods of brecciation.

An extensive design phase testing program in which 10 piles and 2 drilled shafts were instrumented and statically load tested to failure, was undertaken to establish relevant foundation design parameters for two bridges in Charleston, South Carolina, USA. The bearing strata at both test sites was a calcareous, overconsolidated, firm to very stiff, slightly sandy, clayey silt (locally known as Cooper Marl). Confirmation dynamic and static loading tests on production piles indicated only 50 to 60% of anticipated pile capacities; including consideration of time effects. Supplemental subsurface explorations did not reveal any significant variations in marl properties. Ultimately, 22 static and 75 dynamic tests were performed on production piles for a 2 mile section of the project. Pore water pressures in the marl were also monitored during and after pile driving. A study of unit skin friction in the marl as a function of time revealed two distinct trends: piles driven in areas with a sand overlaying the marl gained more capacity significantly faster than those driven through a clay or silt. Although the insitu marl properties are apparently similar across the site, the material immediately above the marl evidently has a large effect on pile capacity. This effect of overburden on pile capacity was verified by testing piles over a period of two years.

Falls of ground, such as falls of roof and sidewall collapses, are a major cause of fatalities and injuries in South African collieries. Based on information obtained from the accident reports of the various Chief Inspectors of nines, a statistical analysis was conducted covering the period 1970 to 1988. This study shows that the volume of rock in a fatal fall of ground is often quite small. In intersections, fatal falls are on average larger than in roadways and at the face. It was also found that in 36 % of all fatal falls of ground no temporary or permanent support was installed at the site of the accident.

The management of risks associated with slope instability is an essential process in the safe and economic operation of open cut mines. The ?slope stability radar? (SSR) has been developed to better manage those risks. The SSR remotely scans rock slopes to continuously measure any surface movement and can be used to detect and alert users of wall movements with sub-millimeter precision. The high level of movement precision and broad area coverage of the rock face can allow for a better understanding of the geomechanics of slope deformation, including magnitude of potential failures and additional warning time of impending instability. Additionally, radar waves adequately penetrate through rain, dust and smoke to give reliable measurements, 24 hours a day. SSR systems have been deployed in many metalliferous and coal mines throughout the world. Over 80 systems are currently being used with current operations in 17 countries. Greater than 200 rock slope collapses and waste dump failures (from several to millions of tones) have been monitored, with ?warning? precursor movements recorded by the SSR. This technology enables a radical change in the management of risks in open cut mining. This paper will present recent case studies of the SSR operation in coal and metalliferous mines. Slope Stability Hazards and Rock Slope Monitoring in Open Pit Mines Surface mining often creates excavation boundaries which are steeper than those would be created under natural processes in the same rock type. They are also undertake quite rapid stress changes during mining and are influenced by significant external forces such as blast vibrations and changes in groundwater. These conditions are likely to allow some degree of instability to develop in the pit slopes. The hazards associated with this instability of pit slopes can be extremely variable in character; ranging from small cobble sized rocks dislodging and falling from mine benches to complete collapse of entire pit walls. It is usually the position of mine geotechnical or geological staff to assess these hazards for mine operations. The assessment of hazards due to unstable slopes can be done by visual observation of precursor signs such as fracturing or rilling of loose material. A more reliable indicator of instability involves the quantitative measurement of outward movement and acceleration of material as an instability mechanism develops. There is strong evidence that small precursor movements of a rock wall occur for an extended period prior to rock slope collapse (Hoek and Bray, 1981). Development of a monitoring system, adopting acceptable slope deformation criteria coupled with warning systems and design of stabilization or risk reduction measures if appropriate has become a standard method of dealing with slope instability. Framework for Slope Hazard Management using the SSR A framework for the management of slope hazards is shown in Figure 1 (discussed in detail in Harries, 2007). Although this framework is specifically for use with the Slope Stability Radar, a similar framework could be developed for other monitoring technologies for monitoring slope deformation. An important point to consider is the sequential nature of the hazard management framework from selecting the context ? identifying hazards ? analysing hazards ? evaluating hazards ? treating hazards. [ ] Once the context of the system has been developed (for example ? to monitor for rapid bench scale collapse), the identification of hazards is the next stage in hazard management. Identification of slope hazards can be relatively straightforward due to the visual nature of the information that the SSR system produces. The areas of excessive wall deformation are highlighted in color maps of the mine slope with a co-aligned photographic image to review the actual site of interest. The responsible personnel must then analyses this data, usually reviewing the deformation style and rate, as well as the size of area that appears to be failing. This information can then be evaluated against organisation protocols (for example it may be only a small sub-bench failure that will be ?caught? by existing benches and hence can be categorized as a lower risk). Once these hazards are evaluated they can then be treated if required. Two major options are available to reduce the risk during this treatment option. We can reduce the likelihood of failure ? for example by buttressing the failure or de-pressurising of water pressures in a slope. However, the most likely plan of action is to reduce the consequence of the failure. One of the most successful opportunities to reduce the consequence of a slope failure is to ensure that no personnel or mining equipment is present at the location of a slope failure when collapse finally occurs. This has been the major benefit of the SSR system to the different mining operations around the world. This report describes the development and application of PHASEQ/FLOW, a geochemical flow simulator capable of describing the dynamic changes in chemical composition of an aqueous solution during flow in a permeable medium. The solution components can react through intraaqueous reactions, redox, precipitation, or dissolution. The assumption of local thermodynamic equilibrium ensures maximum generality with respect to the number of species and components possible; however, the fluid flow itself is limited to one-dimension. The report describes several applications: generic batch equilibria, flowing equilibria, uranium roll-front deposition, and roll-front leaching.

"At Teck-Corona Operating Corporation's David Bell Mine, a water quality management strategy is employed to produce both a chemically and biologically clean effluent prior to discharge to the environment.The strategy includes operating methods to minimize contaminants leaving the concentrator and an effluent treatment plant for cyanide, antimony, and heavy metal removal of concentrator, mine and site waste streams.Concentrator practices, the effluent treatment plant, process chemistry and the present day performance of the water quality management strategy are reviewed.INTRODUCTIONThe David Bell Mine is located in the Hernia gold camp 35 km east of Marathon, Ontario. The concentrator has a design throughput of 1,000 tonnes per day. ROM ore (-6"") is ground in a semi-autogenous mill followed by a ball mill, thickener, leaching, and carbon-in-pulp gold recovery unit operations. The concentrator flow sheet is shown in Figure 1."

"Declining ore grade, leading to increased material transport and plant throughput requirements, is one of the major challenges in the current mining environment. This is accompanied by rising energy and labor costs, decreasing plant productivity and the requirement for highest plant availability. Siemens’ answer is the latest gearless drive technology for grinding and conveying. Gearless drive solutions are surpassing the mechanical limits of conventional drive systems serving to utilize the principle of economies of scale. By elimination of various components of the drive train the maintenance activities and spare parts inventories are reduced. The advantages are culminating in the incomparable availability of the Siemens’ gearless drive technology of 99.46 to 99.71% - as confirmed by real operational data from the Antapaccay mine in Peru. It was the first plant worldwide to use gearless drives for both applications.INTRODUCTION – THE GEARLESS PRINCIPLE The principle idea behind a gearless drive system is to reduce the number of components and diversity of parts. Especially those components that are at the edge of current manufacturing or power limits are eliminated. The used equipment provides the possibility to scale up and increase the power transmitted to the driven machine. This finally results in a possible increase of throughput respectively transported or processed material. In order to apply this principle of simplification we will take a look at the components of a conventional drive system consisting of: - Driven equipment (mill, conveyor, slurry pump) - Components altering the rated speed (gearboxes, girth gear / pinion) - The electric motor - Starting devices for the motor (VSD, CCV, LRS, clutch), which are necessary because a direct across-the-line start of high power motors with load would result in a significant drop in the line supply voltage - Alternatively a variable speed drive (VSD) or cycloconverter (CCV) to utilize the possibility of speed variation during operation - The electrical supply system (cables, switchgear, transformers, protection equipment)"

The Greater Vancouver Water District is currently constructing the Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project to enhance the quality of drinking water in the Vancouver metropolitan area. The Seymour-Capilano Water Filtration Project comprises the 1,800 million litres per day Seymour-Capilano Filtration Plant, the 1,080million litres per day Capilano Pumping Station, twin tunnels with associated shafts, and the Capilano Energy Recovery Facility. The twin tunnels will convey raw water under pressure from the Capilano Reservoir to the Seymour Filtration Plant and return treated (filtered) water for distribution. The Twin Tunnels component of the project comprises twin, 3.7 m diameter, 7.2 km TBM bored tunnels, the 180 m deep Seymour Shaft as the main launch shaft, and two 4 m diameter, 268 m deep raise bore exit shafts at Capilano. The Twin Tunnels have been planned as predominantly unlined tunnels sited at depth entirely within granitic bedrock and cross under two major buried glacial valleys of breadths in excess of 1500 metres that are filled with glacial sediments to depths up to 200 metres. The maximum overburden along the tunnel alignment is approximately 400 metres. Comprehensive site investigations and studies were completed during the detailed design stage of the project. The construction of the twin tunnels started in the fall of 2004 and is planned to be completed by mid-2008.
