Two dry docks are currently under construction on the northern banks of the Persian Gulf by Iran Shipyard and Offshore Industries Co. (ISOICO). The construction of these dry docks forms a huge civil offshore project. The foundation system include more than 6500 large diameter (40-48 inch) spiral pipe piles with embedded depth varying from 18 to 25 meters. Extensive geotechnical subsurface investigations were carried out in the project site in order to provide enough information and proper perspective on the underlying soil layers. The results of geotechnical investigation indicated that a 20 m thick dense silty sand layer exist which can be considered as the main bearing stratum. Due to short clear distance between the piles (less than 3 m) refusal occurred for some piles, accordingly led to actual length less than their design length. To verify and in-situ evaluation of piles capacity, static and dynamic full scale loading tests programme were performed. The data from 40 static compression and tension and also 50 dynamic tests with PDA were interpreted and analyzed by current approaches and CAPWAP software. The results of analysis demonstrated that the safety factor of bearing capacity of piles must be increased to reach a safety factor of about 1.8. To achieve this purpose the interaction of combined piled-raft system has been realized.

Although these subterranean cavities are common to the Broken Hill big lode, yet the Broken Hill Proprietary is the most prolific in their occurrence, loud they have been found of various dimensions almost from the surface down to the lowest levels yet attained in that mine. Many of these vugbs have contined valuable silver, copper and lead deposits, and some have been remarkable for the beautiful forms of crystallization pendant from the roofs and walls, and collected on the floors. The question arises, How are these caverns and fissures in the ore body formed? There are numerous theories more or less feasible, but that the causes are variant is demonstrated beyond doubt. That water in its passage leaving channels, is one ofthe chief factors for their production is assured, and their presence is likewise due to the shrinkage and dropping of the earth from varions causes, to the deposition of material forming ledges overhanging, and thus leaving spaces below, and also to chemical erosion and electrical action both of which latter are constantly at work in reconstructing, segregating and dissolving tlie mineral and metallic constituents of all ore bodies.One of the most remarkable vughs yet discovered in the big mine was that opened up about three months bitek in the' heart of the ironstone body on Block 11, and located about 40 feet below the 100 feet level of Weatherley's stopes, but now destroyed in the progress of work. Probably it was caused by chemical action, the eating out, so to speak, of a soft and soluble portion of the manganic iron, leaving a,hollow about 15 feet long, with a width and height, of say, 6 feet, carpeted with beautiful zinc with a modicum of limeincrustations, apparently produced by the percolation from around the carbonate waters holding these minerals in solution. This cavern was divided into, what might be termed, a double chamber, by big boulders of manganic iron, also coated with an aggregation of small crystals of zinc and lime although the actual proportion of the latter was not determined.

This paper deals chiefly with the preliminary examination, when a decision has to be made as to whether a prospect has a chance of developing into a mine or not. At this stage it is important to have a fairly clear conception of what is expected of the prospect, andjust what type of mine is sought. Much money can be wasted testing a prospect suitable for a prospector or small syndicate, but which never looked like becoming a mine of sufficient size to interest a company. When undertaking an inspection, therefore, it is necessary to have a broad outline, at least, of the policy of the principals for whom the report is intended.At this early stage it is frequently necessary to form an opinion of the prospects of a property on very meagre data. When new to this type of work one's first reaction is often th~t it is impossible to pass an opinion on the data available. It. is absolutely necessary,however, that an opinion of the possibilities and chances of favourable development be given; The report should strive to convey this information, making quite ::lear the risk involved, how complete are the data on which this opinion is based, and the possible magnitude of the prize. A Preliminary report has to state whether a property has sufficient prospects to warrant testing.The following procedure is suggested in order to make best use of the data and minimise hasty conclusions influenced by preconceived ideas-an ever-present danger.Examination.The first stage is the examination. This should aim at collecting all available significant data, but avoid clouding the issue with detail which, at this stage, will not affect the decision. The following points are considered to be the main ones for which to look:-Geological Environment.As good a working knowledge as possible'of the geology of the area should be obtained. Government Geological Survey reports and maps, if available, will be a big help. A detailed knowledge of the regional geology is not necessary a,t this stage, but a broad outline of the geological setting of the prospect under review, and also of any other important mines in the district, is often helpful in the final decision.The Nature of the Ore-Body.Any facts concerning the nature or occurrence of the lode should be noted as, coupled with experience of similar bodies, they affect the ultimate decision.Structural Control.This is probably the most important factor, in the light of present geological knowledge. Its chief importance is due to two facts:-(a) Structure plays one of the prime parts in ore deposition.(b) Geological knowledge, of structure is somewhat in advance of knowledge of other factors influencing ore deposition.

A method has been developed for determining the relative water wet-tability (fraction of the surface wet by water) of porous media. This method involves the adsorption of methylene blue dye from an aqueous solution onto the solid surfaces of rock contacted by the injected dye solution. Experiments on Berea snndstone cores have shown that water-wet cores adsorb a large amount of dye from solution. In oil-wet cores, however, the injected aqueous dye solution is prevented from contacting the adsorptive surfuces by a film of oil and virtually no dye is adsorbed. This method was tested by experiments on mixtures of water-wet and oil-wet sand. Using the dye adsorption method, it was possible to determine quantitatively the fraction of water-wet and oil-wet sarzd in such mixtures. The dye adsorption test is readily applied to determinitrg the relative water wettability of fresh oilfield cores. The cores are not extracted before testing. Observed values of the wettability of field cores tested to date have varied from 100 to 6 per cent water wet. INTR OD UCTIO N Recent articles1 ' have emphasized the important role that wettability plays in almost all phases of reservoir rock behavior. It has been shown that wettability has a profound effect on the interstitial water saturation, residual oil saturation, capillary pressure, relative permeability, waterflood behavior, and resistivity index of oilfield cores. A quantitative investiga- tion of the effect of wettability on these core properties is severely handicapped by the lack of a simple technique for measuring the wettability of a porous medium. If such a technique were available, it would provide investigators with a means of gaining insight into the distribution of phases within a core. A number of qualitative methods of estimating wettability are known. These include contact angle measurements, flotation tests and studies of displacement pressure: imbibition7 and relative permeability data.' Using these tests, it is usually possible to classify a core as water-wet, oil-wet, or some intermediate degree of wettability. One recently proposed method involving measurement of nuclear magnetic relaxatione offers promise of determining quantitatively the fractional wettability of cores. The equipment is rather elaborate and necessary treatment of the cores before testing probably alters the natural wettability. This latter point also applies to most of the cited qualitative methods. This paper presents a new technique for determining water wettability of cores; it is based on measurements of the dye adsorption capacity of the core. This method has the advantage of requiring relatively simple equipment and involves minimum handling of the core before testing. It is important to distinguish between the various concepts of wettability referred to in the literature. The term "wetting" is defined by Bartell as that phenomenon which occurs when a solid and liquid phase come in contact in any manner so as to form a solid-liquid interface. A preferentially water-wet solid is defined by Jennings in terms of the advancing contact angle in the solid water-oil systems. Brown and Fatt regard fractional wettability as the fraction of the total surface area that is preferentially oil-wet or water-wet. However, none of these definitions adequately describes the type wettability measured by the dye test. This calls for the introduction of a new term, "relative water wettability", which we define as the fraction of the total surface area of a core contacted by injected water. DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The ability of a porous medium (especially the clays) to adsorb large quantities of surfactants, dyes, etc., is well known. It is reasonable to assume that a substance can be adsorbed from solution onto a solid surface only if the solution contacts the surface. In this connection Shapiro" has shown by experiments on silica gel that completely dry gel will adsorb methyl red dye from a benzene solution. On the other hand, if a film of water more than several molecules thick is present on the silica gel, the adsorption capacity of the gel for the dye is drastically reduced. Thus, a study of the dye adsorption capacity of cores should give some clue as to the fluid distribution on the surface of the core. TEST OF METHOD As a qualitative check on this theory, dye adsorption tests were run on similar Berea sandstone cores (Table 1, Cores 1-5). Cores saturated initially with water and flooded with 0.01 per cent aqueous methylene blue adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Similar cores saturated initially with water, driven to irreducible water with oil, and then flooded with the same dye solution also adsorbed 0.58 mg dye/gm of core. Another core, treated with a 5 per cent Dri-Film solution, dried and saturated with oil (Soltrol) adsorbed no dye when the dye solution was injected. These tests confirm

This paper presents the wall stabilization design and implementation for a 541 linear ft masonry and concrete gravity-type retaining wall flanking the west perimeter of a 7.37 acre parcel in Bronx, New York. This paper will discuss the results of static and dynamic stability analyses performed for the pre- and post excavation phases for the proposed 300 ft wide open-cut of up to 14 ft of contaminated soil below the toe of the retaining wall. The wall stabilization consisted of over 74 inclined drilled and grouted anchor dowels, and 55 tiebacks drilled and grouted to the underlying mica schist bedrock. Three over-lapping rows of jet grout columns were chosen as the foundation solution for the existing retaining wall. This paper focuses on the design, construction and performance of the jet grout curtain wall. The jet grout wall served three purposes: 1) underpinning and excavation support for the removal of contaminated site soils, 2) permanent hydraulic barrier, and 3) resistance against a deep seated failure within the thick clay layer present at the site. The originally designed jet grout wall had unexpected negative effects to the existing retaining wall. The jet grouting program was modified while the Observational Method (Peck 1969) was employed to keep wall movements to a minimum. This paper discusses the diagnostic methods used to determine the cause of retaining wall movement; the implementation of a remedial ground improvement program; the modification to the jet grout installation procedure; and the ultimate performance of the jet grout wall.

Tectonic stress is an important parameter for understanding the dynamics of underground engineering and for the exploitation of coalbed methane. Multiple-period structural features usually have complex spatial relationships in tectonic superposition areas, which provides evidence for identification of the sequence of the tectonic stress period. Conjugated joints and slickensides are used to reconstruct the tectonic stress of the No. 8 Mine in Pingdingshan. Based on the geological unit division and field measurements, data on hundreds of joints and slickensides are collected from 33 stations. The tectonic stress results indicated by the conjugated joints show that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NEE-SWW, NW-SE, NE-SW, and NNESSW. The tectonic stress results of the slickensides indicate that there are mainly four directions of tectonic stress: NNE-SSW, NNW-SSE, NEE-SWW, and NW-SE. According to the systematic analysis of the joints and slickensides, this paper separates the superposed joint and slickenside sets and identifies the tectonic stress periods with their abutting relationships. Three tectonic stress periods are determined and the sequence of the tectonic stress periods is NE-SW, NW-SE, and NEE-SWW. The results are consistent with other tectonic stress measurements for both the region and the locality.

The Antamina project, owned by BHP Billiton Plc, Mitsubishi Corporation, Noranda Inc., and Teck Cominco Ltd. , is a $2.3 billion copper/zinc project, located in the Ancash Department in Perú. The project consists of an open pit mine, a 70,000 ton per day concentrator, a 302 Km. long concentrate pipeline, port facilities, a new access road, power line, and town site. The project is designed to produce up to 1.5 million tonnes per year of copper and zinc concentrates over a 23-year project life, and will be the third largest producer of zinc and the seventh largest producer of copper in the world. This mega project is the largest mining investment in the country and, during its construction stage, was the most important construction project worldwide. On May 28th, 2001, Antamina commenced testing operations and four months later, it reached commercial production. Antamina was officially inaugurated on November 14th, 2001 by Peruvian president Alejandro Toledo. The construction stage of the project generated 8,000 direct jobs, with a peak of 10,000 employees, and 30,000 indirect jobs. The permanent workforce consists of approximately 1650 employees, the vast majority of which are Peruvian Nationals; around 30% of whom came from the department of Ancash where the deposit is located. Approximately 5,800 indirect jobs will be generated from the project. Independent sources state that Antamina will increase the Peruvian mining exports by 30% and Peruvian GDP by 1.4% within its first year of full operation in 2002. Since winning the privatization bid for the project in 1996, the company has implemented a successful approach to community development and environmental protection based on sustainable development principals. Throughout the development of the project, a number of initiatives have been undertaken to ensure full involvement of the local populations in community development activities and the company?s environmental program. Due to its size, difficult logistics, cultural considerations and financial aspects, the project has faced a number of unique challenges in the area of environmental protection and management of community interaction. Antamina has been innovative in its approach to these issues, and as a result, has set new standards in Perú for environmental and community management, and sustainable development.

"I bid you a hearty welcome and I know by your attendance at these meetings you will gain a great deal of valuable information, as well as have a wonderful time. "We have been very ably represented by Mr. John H. Emrick as General Chairman, assisted by our good friend Mr. Fred W. Whiteside, our secretary and treasurer. I know they have worked very hard in selecting the various committees, who in turn - by the looks of our program have gone all out to prepare material that should be of great interest to us. I trust we will be attentive to the subjects presented and freely enter into the discussions, also relating our problems and experiences. I am sure this will prove both profitable and beneficial to all present. "The main purpose of these conventions is to become acquainted with each other, renew old acquaintances, talk over our problems, and have a little fun and relaxation from our every day routine. "Let us not forget the manufacturers, the distributors, the operators, or the press because it is through their splendid support that this organization is successful. "Since our last meeting we have gained many new members, whom we especially welcome. We are sorry to have lost a few. I am mindful, at this time, of two very good members from my home state who have passed away, Walter Wetzel, a former president of this institute, and Lee Alger, at the time of his death, Vice-President from Utah. We also lost very recently our assistant Secretary-Treasurer, Everret Davis. These men contributed a great deal to the institute and the coal industry in general. In response to the appearance of excessive convergence of bolted gateroads in the front abutment zone of retreating coal faces at Phalen Colliery, staff from the CANMET Cape Breton Coal Research Laboratory in Sydney, N.S. initiated a programme of roof profile measurements in the front abutment zone of longwall headgates. The results of these measurements allowed a characteristic deformation curve to be determined for each headgate, and the early identification of areas showing an unstable deformation trend. These areas were then reinforced with supplementary support. The monitoring programme was adopted and enlarged by the rock mechanics staff of the Cape Breton Development Corporation, and has been continuing for a period of approximately two years. A sufficient quantity of data now exists to be able to make an assessment of the effects of a number of mining parameters on the performance of the gateroad in the front abutment zone. The following paper describes the method of measurement, illustrated by typical results, and goes on to relate variations in rate and patterns of movement to geology, interaction, method of support and pre-mining stresses.

The increasing demands for petroleum and its products and the steadily increasing cost of discovering and developing new oil fields are factors that emphasize the importance of increasing the recovery of oil from known petroleum reserves. Water flooding is a valuable conservation measure, not only preventing premature abandonment of stripper leases but also reviving interest in many areas previously abandoned. The use of water flooding as a means for recovering additional oil from partly depleted oil-bearing formations was first tried in Oklahoma in 1931. Early water-flooding operations were confined to the area of shallow Bartlesville-sand formations in Nowata and Rogers Counties, where many of the projects were outstandingly successful. The results of these operations stimulated activities in other pools in Oklahoma, and by the end of 1949 water flooding had been tried in 25 of the 49 oil-producing counties in the State (fig. 1). Approximately 33 million barrels of oil, or 1,806 barrels per acre, had been recovered by December 31, 1949, from 18,221 productive acres included in the 162 active and abandoned projects in Oklahoma by injection of approximately 449 million barrels of water.

Quantitative seismology is an important tool for investigating mineinduced seismicity and the quantification of the seismic rock mass response. The spatio-temporal interpretation of seismic data within an ever-changing three-dimensional mining environment provides some challenges to the interpretation of the rock mass response. A grid-based approach for the interpretation of spatial variation of the rock mass response provides some benefits compared with approaches based on spatial filters. This paper discusses a grid-based interpretation of seismic data. The basic methods employed in the evaluation of the parameter values through space are discussed and examples of applications to different mine sites given.

Longwall extraction in the Phalen Scam in the Sydney Coalfield of Nova Scotia is carried out under flooded abandoned workings in the Harbour Seam 140 m above, and at depth of up to 700 m beneath the Atlantic Ocean. Careful planning of panel and pillar dimensions is necessary to prevent inflows from the overlying workings and to prevent the development of excessive subsidence strains at the seabed. This paper briefly summarises the research undertaken over the past five years by CBDC and CBCRL into the problems associated with mining under water, and then describes the development and application of a design/planning code of practice developed jointly by CBDC, CBCRL and mine regulatory agencies. The design method employed in the Code of Practise is based on empirical data from the coalfield and parameters developed from subsidence modelling and previous water inflow experience. It includes precautionary measures to be adopted during development and mining, and monitoring procedures to be followed. It is flexible enough to allow future developments in the understanding of inflow mechanisms to be incoporated without major modifications, and represents a major step forward in reducing the potential hazards associated with coal extraction in the coalfield.

Homestake Mining Co. set out to complete final reclamation at a former open-pit gold mine in west central Nevada. The goal was to exceed regulatory standards by satisfying the company's own high corporate standards for successful reclamation. Homestake's completion requirements challenged available technology due to the unsuitability of heap material as a growth medium, the harsh environmental conditions of the site and the region's lack of native growth medium. Accomplishing these goals required enlisting a multidisciplinary project team to develop, test and implement appropriate and cost-effective revegetation alternatives.

The reduction process of pre-oxidized ilmenite concentrate powder in 30%CO–70%N2 atmosphere was characterized by thermogravimetric and differential thermogravimetric (TG-DTG) analysis system at the temperature from 1073 to1223 K. The isothermal reduction results show that the reduction process is divided into three stages and the corresponding apparent activation energies are obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method, respectively. For the first stage, the conversion degree increases sharply with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the random nucleation and subsequent growth model (A2 model). For the second stage, the conversion degree increases slowly with increasing time, and the reduction process is controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (D1 model). For the third stage, the reduction processes at different temperatures are controlled by the diffusion of carbon monoxide in the reduced layer (1073 K and D1 model), phase boundary chemical reaction (1123 K and R2 model), random nucleation and subsequent growth (1173 to 1223 K, A2, and A3 models), respectively. For the whole reduction process, the apparent activation energies obtained by iso-conversional method and model-fitting method are 71.72 and 31.92 kJ mol−1 , respectively

What do all iron ore mines have in common? Perfect production days! Yes, those harmonious 24-hour periods when the stars align and the daily output number rockets past the long-term average to hit new heights. While perfect days are always welcome, the focusing question iswas that just a ‘flash in the pan’ (due to a special cause) or an indication of the process’s capability (with clues to the common causes) which, if addressed, could make every day perfect? In the context of today’s operating environment, with the need to maximise productivity at minimum cost, it’s an important question.Investigations reveal that the throughput difference between a perfect production day and the average is often in the order of 40 per cent, and that bulk solids handling (BSH) system deficiencies are the largest (>50 per cent) class of lost opportunity. Root causes for underperformance of elements in BSH systems can often be traced back to the detailed design and even study-stage oversights. Essentially baked into the fabricated plant, operations are effectively forced to accept them at the point of practical completion and then deal with the consequences for the life of the mine. Subsequent normalisation of these defects in the planning process reduces visibility and hence the impetus for long-term solutions in favour of lower targets and quick fixes to keep the show on the road. On an industry wide basis the design processes and assumptions responsible for BSH system underperformance become enshrined as common practice and hence repeated across sites and organisations.In addition to making the case for action, practical steps that can be taken to help realise the significant productivity prize and avoid the problems in first place are provided.CITATION:Wellwood, G A, 2017. O efeito de memória de forma tem como principal objetivo a recuperação da forma por meio de aquecimento acima das temperaturas críticas de transformação. Fitas da liga Ti43,5Cu37,8Ni18,7 foram preparadas através do processo melt spinnig com velocidade da roda de 21 m/s e 63 m/s. As fitas foram tratadas termicamente numa temperatura de 700°C por 15 minutos em forno e resfriadas ao ar. A caracterização das fitas foi feita por calorimetria diferencial de varredura (DSC) e análise por difração de raios X (DRX). Foi observado que com uma menor velocidade de rotação da roda (21 m/s) a fita apresentou-se totalmente cristalina, e quando aumentou-se a velocidade linear da roda para 63 m/s a fita apresentou-se completamente amorfa. Após o tratamento térmico todas as fitas apresentaram as transformações martensíticas e auteníticas. Observou-se que a velocidade da roda tem grande influência nas temperaturas de transformação, chegando à variação de aproximadamente 7°C. O tratamento térmico remove todos os defeitos produzidos pelo processo de solidificação rápida e produz um rápido crescimento de grão, favorecendo ao aumento das temperaturas de transformação.
