On the more important mines it is almost essential to have a general plan of the surface. A special feature of this plan should be the indication thereon of a suitable arrangement of contour lines, either wholly over the surface of the property or at parts where may seem most useful. The importance of having these contours marked on the plan will be best appreciated by the engineer, in selecting the best available site for a proposed new plant, in locating a tramway, in connecting the surface with the underground workings to the best advantage, or in solving many similar problems that come within his province. The closer the contours are together vertically the better, the limitation being the trouble and expense of getting them on to the plan. They may range from five to fifty feet apart but a distance of ten feet will be found, in most cases, to be the most useful.In deciding the datum level from which these contours are to be measured, it is best to depart from the ordinary sea level datum, and use instead the highest available point on the property. This datum will be called zero and all levels will be reckoned so many feet below it; thus by a contour marked 160 on the plan, it will be understood that the level of the plane of the contour is 160 feet below the highest available point on the property. This system of measuring levels downward is readily suggested from measuring the depths of shafts from the brace or of excavations from the original surface.

"The House/Senate Joint Conference Committee has instructed the Bureau of Mines to have the Advisory Committee on Mining and Mineral Resources Research review on an annual and simultaneous basis each generic mineral technology research center (GMTC). In order to accomplish that review promptly and uniformly, committee members have revised and approved an in-depth questionnaire. That document formed the basis of their review. The information provided by that questionnaire was an important factor in their recommendations concerning the future direction of the program; a presentation was made at the last National Plan Update.The comprehensive nature of the questionnaire and the scope of the information contained therein make it an excellent retrospective of the Center. Having a clear vision of where the Center has been and knowing where it is now will help guide it into the future. It is felt that such a detailed view of the Center's facilities and research program will be of value to Center personnel and Advisory Committee members.Each aspect of the questionnaire has been examined, answered in detail, and documented throughly. With the completed questionnaire as a guide, this volume examines the research program, Center personnel presently active on GMTC projects, number of graduate degrees granted with GMTC support, GMTC publications, degree of individual interaction, technology transfer, the reference center, GMTC equipment and facilities, and any envisioned plans for future research. It is hoped that this volume will serve as a review of the years 1984-1988, the first four years of the Center's operation."

The considerable progress made in the sulfide smelting technology since the first International Sulfide Symposium of 1983 is discussed. The new developments and innovations have largely been driven by the recognition of environmental concern as well as the need for increased productivity. The smelting technologies for various nonferrous metals are reviewed, with an emphasis on the industry trend towards larger plants and continuous processes. The tremendous advances made in process modeling and computer simulation to describe the complex smelting processes are also reviewed. The goal of these mathematical models is the quantitative description of the processes and the reactors that will provide a means for the control and optimization of smelting operations as well as the optimal design of the operating conditions and the reactors. Environmental issues remain a key consideration in the smelting industry. One of the most remarkable improvements made in the last fifteen years since the 1983 Sulfide Smelting Symposium is the rapid increase in the sulfur capture by nonferrous smelters. This and other related issues are briefly discussed. Finally, the challenges that the smelting industry faces as the new millenium approaches are discussed. The industry continues to face technical challenges to improve productivity and efficiency, while being responsive to ever-increasing public pressure for environmental protection. It also faces external challenges from factors that may cause the reduction of metal uses as a result of substitutions by other materials. Another serious challenge and dire consequence that the primary metals industry is expected to face is the serious diminution of university-educated manpower as well as basic-research output. To remain competitive and healthy, the industry should take up the void left by the complete disappearance, at least in the U.S., and the reduction in other nations, of the governmental support of higher education and basic research in the field of primary metals production.

"The Jewell tunnel property, situated 3/miles north of Garfield, Chaffee County, Colo., was examined by an engineer3 of the Bureau of Mines in June 1943. Field work began September 16, 1944, but was recessed from December 26, 1944, to gay 15, 1945, because of heavy snows, and was suspended July 12, 1945, when rehabilitation of the New York tunnel workings was completed to the point desired.In its program of exploration of Mineral deposits, the Bureau of Lines has as its promary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as seen .as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Knickerbocker, chief, analyzes samples of ore and performs beneficiation tests. Both these branches are under the supervision of Dr. R. S. INTRODUCTION Conceptual design of the first Exploratory Shaft (ES-I) for the Nuclear Waste Repository in Basalt (NWRB) began in July 1981; detailed design began in February 1982, and was largely completed by December (RKE/PB, 1983). The intent was to begin shaft construction by January 1983. The site had been prepared at that time, a construction manager selected and on board, the starter hole excavated and lined, and steel casings were under procurement. Government policy changed, however, and construction was halted before the drill rig started turning. Construction is now planned to begin in 1988. ES-I is a part of the site characterization program for the NWRB. The shaft will be used to develop production data and related information relative to drilling shafts at the site near Richland, WA, and to provide access to the repository horizon for site characterization and testing. The early program called for one shaft and some 330 m (1000 ft) of drifting. The program has since expanded to include a second shaft (ES-II) and more extensive drifting and testing. Currently, both shafts are planned to be 1.8 m (6 ft) in finished diameter, but studies are underway to determine if the second shaft should be larger. The drilling method was selected for shaft construction primarily because it offered a significantly shorter construction period than conventional shaft sinking using freezing and grouting. The installation of augered cast-in-place (ACIP) piles requires careful quality control to assure a successful pile installation. Unlike steel, pre-stressed concrete or other types of driven piles, which are shop fabricated, delivered to the site and typically driven to a minimum tip resistance, augered cast-in-place piles are installed to a pre-determined tip elevation or to a refusal criteria. The structural section of the ACIP pile is constructed during pile installation and cannot be inspected prior to installation. Therefore, a carefully administered quality control program is essential to a pile foundation that will meet or exceed design requirements. This requires an experienced team consisting of the Geotechnical Engineer, Contractor and Inspector. The focus of this paper is to discuss the responsibilities and duties of the ACIP piling Inspector. Qualifications of the Inspector The qualifications of the inspector are related to the complexity and difficulty of the proposed project. Ideally, the Inspector should be an individual with a degree in civil engineering with special emphasis in geotechnical engineering. A properly trained technician with geotechnical engineering experience working under the direct supervision of a geotechnical engineer may be able to provide competent inspection on some projects. It is important that the Inspector have a good understanding of subsurface and ground water conditions and how they will affect pile installation. The Inspector must understand ACIP pile installation procedures and be able to communicate with the Contractor, Structural and Geotechnical Engineers; and maintain a detailed pile record for each installed pile.

The scaled-distance model for blast vibration analysis is the standard method employed throughout the surface mining and quarrying industries to model Peak Particle Velocity (PPV) data. Although empirical, the method is widely accepted and through the simplicity of its application and ease of graphical verification is set to remain a popular option. The validity of the technique relies principally on the fundamental parametric assumption that blasting data is normally distributed. Throughout the evolution of scaled-distance modelling, this is an issue that has most often been presumed rather than proven (most likely due to the tediousness of the calculations involved). In the few cases when normality has been given some degree of consideration, the result has been the product of a simple visual inspection of frequency distributions: clearly unsatisfactory. However recently the soundness of this assumption has been brought into question, with obvious connotations for blast modelling in general. This paper considers this fundamental issue and seeks to investigate the normality hypothesis within the blasting context through an in-depth statistical analysis of what possibly can be described as an ‘ideal’ blasting dataset. This being a rare case study concerning an opencast coal site in England, where for the entire life of the site every single blast was monitored and recorded through the use of permanent monitoring stations. This has provided a unique ‘total population’ dataset of considerable size from which the assumptions of normality are put to the test.

Four manganese dioxide leaching microorganisms, an Achromobacter spp, Aspergillus niger, Elllerobacter cloacae and Elllerobacter agglomerails were purified from sucrose enriched crude mixed cultures which contained at least sixteen, non-leaching, morphologically different, colony types. Fastest leaching rates were obtained from the original enrichment's mixed cultures (1.26 g Mn++ I/d) while best yields of Mn++ m terms of sugar use came from Achromobacter and A. niger being 0.84 and 0.89 g Mn++/g sucrose respectively. The peak efficiency in manganese reduced, per carbohydrate used, coincided with the exponential growth phase for Achromobacter. The two Elllerobacter species performed better in stationary or senescent growth phases.

"In this paper, we review the equations needed to construct an ion exchange column model. These models contain three major components: 1) a differential material balance around the column, 2) a differential material balance around an ion exchange particle, and 3) a constitutive equation for diffusive flux. We then examine the ability of a fairly simple mathematical model to predict ion exchange column experimental data. This model contains the traditional absorption theory equations and is used to predict the behavior of a column filled with a hydrous crystalline silico-titanate and which is removing trace amounts of Cs+ from a high pH, complex electrolyte solution. Finally, we propose replacing Fick's law with the Nemst-Planck equation as the constitutive equation for diffusive flux. We use a NemstPlanck type model to predict batch experimental data, then evaluate it by comparing it's ability to predict experimental data to that of a more traditional Fick's law type model. The data from this comparison suggests that the Nemst-Planck type model yields better results.IntroductionMillions of gallons of strongly basic, radioactive waste are currently stored in underground storage tanks at Hanford and Savannah River and several locations within the United States. Due to the limited life expectancy of the tanks, there is a pressing need to remediate these wastes. This need has prompted the recent development of new ion-exchange materials for removing radioactive elements from aqueous solutions. A novel material called TAM-5 has been developed jointly by Texas A&M University and Sandia National Laboratories. TAM- 5, a crystalline silico-titanate, is highly selective for Cs + in the complex electrolytic solutions typical of these wastes. It is stable in very basic solutions and in radioactive environments [1, 2 ,3]. In laboratory testing to determine the selectivity of various materials, TAM-5 was superior to other candidate ion exchangers [4, 5]. The selectivities were determined by measuring a distribution coefficient, Kd, which is defined as the concentration, gig or mmols/g of Cs in the solid phase divided by the concentration, mg/L or mmols/mL, of Cs in the liquid phase. The units of Kd are ml/g or L/kg. Table 1 shows Kd values for TAM-5 compared to 9 other candidate materials in a typical waste solution [6]."

The Bureau of Mines, through a memorandum of agreement with the State of Ohio, tested a method of constructing seals in abandoned mine openings in Ohio by means of pneumatic stowing of crushed limestone and gravel with sand. A total of five openings and one shaft were back-filled. Pneumatic stowing uses compressed air to convey material through a pipeline and into the mine opening. The stowing equipment consists of a power supply, a blower, a feeder to inject the material into the pipeline through an airlock, and a nozzle for directing the placement. Material is ejected from the nozzle at high velocity, creating a high-compaction fill upon impact. Well-graded aggregate up to 2 inches in diameter and having sufficient fines is used as fill. The stowing method is safer and faster than conventional methods, is cost competitive, prevents trespass into abandoned mine openings, and eliminates or reduces the exposure of workers to possible hazards since the discharge nozzle can be kept at the mouth of the opening. The equipment is mobile, and, with some modification, the technique could be widely used for sealing abandoned and active mine openings, even in remote locations and during severe weather conditions.

INTRODUCTION The Brightwater conveyance system project in King County, Washington consists of constructing about 21 km (13 mile) of effluent and combined influent and effluent tunnels. The influent tunnels will collect sanitary sewerage from the service area and convey it to the new wastewater treatment plant (WTP) site at Route 9 in Woodinville, Snohomish County, Washington. The effluent tunnels will convey treated effluent from the WTP to an outfall at Puget Sound. The tunnels will be constructed primarily under residential areas, busy suburban roads and state highways. This 21 Km (13-mile) soft ground tunneling project faced many design challenges because of the geologic and hydrostatic conditions, long tunnel reaches, and large overburden depths. Boring depths typically varied from 45.7 M (150 ft) to 114 M(375 ft) with a maximum depth of 185.6 M (566 ft) deep. Conventional empirical methods for non-mountain terrain based on a 1:1 ratio of drilled footage per foot of tunnel bore (National Research Council, 1984) for evenly spaced borings provided a good start for the Phase 1 explorations. However a continuation of this approach with closer spacing was deemed inadequate by the geotechnical team for efficiently allocating geotechnical exploration resources for the final design. This paper presents a rational approach that was used to evaluate the value of a particular geotechnical exploration boring, pump test or other in-situ test. The method of analysis, which was initially developed for rock tunnels (Einstein et al., 1978), was modified for the Brightwater project. The method considers the potential construction cost risks resulting from variable geologic conditions, the cost and reliability of the geotechnical exploration and the earned value (cost risk reduction) of performing the geotechnical exploration. Long tendon support systems provide several challenges when used in-cycle as part of the secondary or primary support cycle. A two-component pumpable resin, Carbothix, has been in development for use with self-drilling rock bolts, but many of the attributes of this new resin system make it ideal for grouting long tendon support systems. While neat Portland cement grouts or polyester resin capsules have been used with long tendon support systems for many years, two-component pumpable resin systems overcome many of the shortcomings in these systems. The two-component systems dramatically improve the set-time to enable mining face advance with fewer delays, enable longer pumping distances, improve quality control, and enhance load transfer mechanisms. This paper describes the key benefits associated with a new pumpable resin and details the Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum department atmospheric testing results and cable load testing completed by Minova personnel to date. It also details the results of the Australian mine site trials and the introduction of these systems into production use.

The Ore Mountains in Germany have a history of more than 850 years of underground mining activity. This has created a situation where thousands of old mine shafts and adits are due for rehabilitation. While no long-term stable rehabilitation was executed in previous centuries, those abandoned mine sites which date back to the uranium mining boom from 1945 to 1962 were rehabilitated immediately after mine closure according to state-of-the art technology. Over the years, however, it has become obvious that most of these sites are not long-term stable and thus it has become necessary to rehabilitate them a second time. Technical University Bergakademie Freiberg is carrying out a research project on the optimization of this process. 70 mine site rehabilitation projects, the technology and the materials used have been assessed. A technical guideline for future rehabilitation projects, based on the outcomes of this assessment, is under development with the goal to make it easier, faster and more economical to select and apply suitable designs and construction materials for dams, plugs and other rehabilitation structures in former uranium mines.

As part of its program to provide technology for reducing undesirable environmental impacts of mineral processing operations, the Bureau of Mines developed the citrate process for desulfurizing industrial stack gases that contain from 0.1 to 2 vol pet S02. In this regenerable flue gas desulfurization (FGD) process, S02 is absorbed from cleaned and cooled industrial flue gas with a citric acid-sodium citrate solution. The absorbed S02 is subsequently reacted with H2S to precipitate marketable elemental sulfur and regenerate the solution for recycle. Laboratory investigations of process parameters provided information for designing larger scale continuous operations. Information gathered from operation of two pilot plants, one at a copper smelter and one at a lead smelter, confirmed the laboratory results. Data were obtained for design and construction of a commercial-sized demonstration plant at the George F. Weaton Power Station, Monaca, PA. A preliminary operation of the plant was demonstrated, under a cost-sharing Bureau-industry contract. This bulletin describes the citrate process and gives results of the laboratory, pilot plant, and demonstration plant studies, as well as corrosion investigations.

"A 51-story concrete core and steel frame commercial office tower was recently constructed on the site of the former US Gypsum building in downtown Chicago, Illinois, USA The structure foundation reused several caissons from the demolished US Gypsum building supplemented with new belled caissons bearing on silty clay hardpan. Extensive in-situ pressuremeter testing was performed during the geotechnical investigation to determine allowable bearing capacity and better estimate building settlements. Problems during foundation construction along the south side of the building frame required remediation of two caissons. One caisson was supplemented with micropiles, while the second caisson was abandoned and replaced with a straight-shaft rock socketed caisson. To determine the effectiveness of the repairs, the building foundation settlements were monitored during construction.IntroductionIn 2001, The John Buck Company began development of a new office tower at the southeast corner of West Monroe Street and South Wacker Drive in Chicago, Illinois. The site was formerly occupied by the 18-story US Gypsum (USG) building. Mr. Clyde N. Baker, Jr. (Senior Principal at STS Consultants, Ltd .) served as the foundation engineer for USG which was completed in 1962. The building was founded on a forest of belled caissons bearing at elevation -56 Chicago City Datum (CCD). For reference, the ground surface at Upper Wacker Drive is approximately elevation +20 CCD. The bearing material was a hard silty clay, locally described as Chicago Hardpan. The foundation caissons were designed using an allowable bearing pressure of 16 ksf (766 kPa). In 1996, the USG superstructure was razed, and the three-level basement was converted to an underground parking ramp.South Wacker DevelopmentThe 51-story high-rise building was completed in 2005 with a structural height of 681 feet (208 m), and an internal space of more than 1,000,000 square feet (93 ,000 square meter). The typical floor size is 27, 700 square feet (2, 570 square meter). Renderings of the building are provided in Figures 1 and 2. The largest single tenant is the accounting firm of Deloitte & Touche, which occupies roughly 45% of the building space with over 3,000 employees."

"INTRODUCTION The bottoming of the United Verde sulfide pipe has shortened the expected life of the United Verde mine to a matter of a few years. First located in 1876, this Arizona mine has had a long period of activity, having reached a peak production in 1929 of over 71,000 trans of copper. Through these many years of successful operation, a safety program has evolved in keeping with the proficiency developed in mining the ore body. MOST recently elected to the limited group of Honorary Members in the A.I.M.E. is the distinguished Australian metallurgist, Guillaume Daniel Delprat. His citation reads: "in recognition of his distinguished achievement as metallurgist, engineer, and administrator in the production of ferrous and nonferrous metals," Mr. Delprat's ability and experience in both the ferrous and nonferrous fields at once distinguishes him from most of his professional brothers. Mr. Delprat's nativity was neither Australian nor English, for he was born in Delft, Holland, in 1856, and educated in Amsterdam. At the age of 22 he went to Spain, as metallurgist for the Tharsis Sulphur and Copper Co., Ltd. Afterwards he spent some time with the Bede Metal and Chemical Co., which had mines in both Spain and Norway, and of which company he became general manager. Other positions of responsibility held by Mr. Delprat before he went to Australia included the managing directorship of the Cordova Exploration Co., with properties in Spain and Canada; of the Rincon Silver-Lead Mining Co., in Spain; and of the Deloro Gold Mines, in Canada.
