Mill operators are entrusted to manage what are normally the largest capital assets on any mine site. Achieving maximum utilisation and lowest costs that drive operating margins are realised by applying well known fundamentals of good housekeeping and proactive (as opposed to reactive) maintenance programmes. Historically, maintenance and operations staff are bought in late during the construction stage and often do not have the time, know how or tools to put in place (let alone train the incumbent staff) a functioning maintenance system before commissioning starts. They then get drawn into a reactive maintenance paradigm as teething problems post commissioning are dealt with and day to day issues envelop the line tradesmen and supervisors. Additionally, even when some semblance of a planned maintenance system is established, it is often the case that over time personnel and cultural issues mask the development of problematic maintenance practices. As has been observed by the authors on many occasions, even when some basic programmed maintenance system is in place, the collection of maintenance data is often inaccurate, incomplete and not subject to analysis. The net result is of course a high incidence of machine failure leading to lower than expected availability, which ultimately translates to lower revenue and higher net maintenance costs. The time taken and the cost to repair a failed machine is always greater than the timely and planned repair of a worn machine.Upon review of a number of processing plants around the world, especially gold and small base metal operations, it is apparent that companies need to implement maintenance systems whereby the operators are not overwhelmed with data and can manage by exception. Inadequate or inaccurate data collection and analysis result in poor decisions being made and misguided actions taken. GR Engineering Services (GRES) has developed a system to enable the custodians of mining plant assets to make more effective and effective use of maintenance data by being able to focus on the indicators of plant deterioration and to programme concurrent maintenance activities to maximise plant availability and utilisation.This paper outlines the structures that can be employed to address the challenges of implementing a proactive asset management system. The XVIth International Conference on Coal Mine Safety Research was divided into eight half-day technical sessions. In accord with the established practice of these conferences, at each session, presentation of the papers was followed by a discussion period. Questions and comments submitted in writing to the session chairman were answered or discussed by the authors of the relevant papers or by their representatives. These discussions were tape-recorded in the original language of the speaker and subsequently translated into English when necessary. Questions to which no answer was available at the time and a few comments that exceeded the scope of the session have been omitted.

"Production of industrial minerals remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations. New Mexico leads U.S. domestic production of potash, perlite, zeolite and travertine. Other production includes aggregate, humate, pumice, gypsum, salt, common and fire clay, scoria, limestone, fly ash, cement, magnetite, silica and decorative stone. New Mexico also has the potential for additional production of industrial minerals. One company is exploring for garnet. Cretaceous black sandstones in the San Juan Basin have drawn interest for titanium, rare earth elements (REEs), niobium and zircon, and other REE deposits are being explored. REE-thoriumuranium veins have been found in the Gallinas, Capitan and Cornudas Mountains and Laughlin Peak-Chico Hills. Exploration for beryllium has occurred in the Ojo Caliente No. 2, Cuchillo Negro and Victorio mining districts. Companies also are examining high-calcium limestone and high-magnesium dolomite for potential development, while aggregate continues to be important in urban areas and along highways. IntroductionIndustrial minerals and rocks are literally the building blocks of our way of life. They are an exceptionally diverse and vital group of raw materials that underpin almost all aspects of human activity, infrastructure and standard of living. Industrial minerals and rocks are used in the manufacture of many products, from ceramics to plastics to refractories to paper. Although industrial minerals permeate nearly every aspect of daily life, their presence and their roles are typically invisible. A widely used definition of industrial minerals and rocks is “any rock, mineral, or other naturally occurring substance of economic value, exclusive of metal ores, mineral fuels, and gemstones: one of the nonmetallics” (Bates, 1975). This definition includes the important construction materials sector as well as specialized industrial minerals, but complex interactions between consumer industries produce a number of apparent anomalies to this definition. Some metals are included as industrial minerals because their use is industrial rather than as a metal. Sulfur is now predominantly extracted as a byproduct of cleaning natural gas, one of the world’s major energy fuels.Production of industrial minerals has been and remains important to the rural economy of New Mexico. Industrial minerals constitute nearly 41 percent of the more than $3.1 billion generated by mineral production in New Mexico in 2014 (Table 1). In 2014, 226 active mines and mills were registered in New Mexico and included four coal, eight potash, 11 metal, 33 industrial mineral and 170 aggregate and stone operations (New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 2015a). CANANEA has long been recognized as a remarkable field for geologic study. The copper deposits and rocks of the district have been described by many geologists and engineers, but only the most general correlations have been made between Cananea sedimentary rocks and other known sedimentary sections in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico. The present paper describes the Cananea sediments in greater detail than has been done before and attempts to fit the Cananea sedimentary section more closely into the geologic time table. The lack of well-preserved fossils has made it difficult to date the sediments accurately in geo- logic time, but it is possible to make tentative correlations between the Cananea sediments and the southeastern Arizona sections, based largely upon lithology and general position in the geologic column. It appears that sedimentation at Cananea and Bisbee may have been closely similar during Paleozoic time. Even such generalized correlations, however, may be subject to considerable modification in the future. The present study has led to the recognition of other problems of age and mineralization relationships in the Cananea district. Cananea is located in the north-central part of the state of Sonora, Mexico, at an elevation of 5270 ft. It is about 135 miles northeast of Hermosillo, the state capital, and 25 miles south of the international boundary. By road Cananea is 40 miles from the twin towns of Naco, Ariz., and Naco, Sonora, and about 50 miles from Bisbee, Ariz. It is served by the Nogales-Naco branch of the railroad, F.C. Pacifico, and is connected with Chihuahua and Mexico City by the Aeronaves airline.

"The paper formulates an evaluation procedure for examining the effects of location on the economics of developing mineral deposits. This methodology is applied to assess locational aspects of Nova Scotia's competitive position f or mine development relative to other Canadian regions and provinces. The appraisal concerns two representative mine development opportunities, a medium-size open-pit tungsten deposit, and a small underground gold deposit. The influence of regional economic conditions is initially assessed. Then, the consequences of taxation are isolated. Finally, the combined impact of regional and taxation conditions is examined. SettingThe economic potential of mining may be assessed in a number of ways. One approach, increasingly used for both corporate planning and government policy purposes, is to evaluate the competitive position of an actual or potential mineral producer in the international marketplace relative to other suppliers.Such examinations of competitive position vary from cost league comparisons of breakeven costs for operating mines, through the assessment of medium-term costs associated with developing new mine capacity, to long-term evaluations of the economics of mineral supply from the start of exploration. The complexity of the analysis increase s with the scope and timeframe of interest. Many factors are involved. One component of competitive position is the quality of the mineral resources available. Other key factors include existing technology, wage and salary rates, labour productivity, the cost of capital, infra structure requirements, distances from sources of materials supply an d to mineral markets, management attributes, organizational efficiency, government mineral policies (particularly taxation), and inflation and exchange rates. The paper fits within this competitive position framework.The variable economic conditions which exist within Canada have a direct bearing on the viability of mine development and, thereby, on mineral exploration potential. The paper examines locational aspects of Nova Scotia 's competitive position."

"An increasing number of mobile phones is increasing the number of the discarded mobile phones. Many efforts are thus being made to collect and recycle these devices. This paper is a short introduction of the recycling system of precious metals from the discarded mobile phone, currently available in Japan. Moreover, an attempt has been made to compare the energy recovery and the mechanical recycling of plastic wastes from the discarded mobile phone. The assessment has been carried out in the context of the life cycle assessment methodology (LCA). The environmental impact of each option was assessed by calculating the following impact indicators: depletion of abiotic resources (ADP), and global warming potential (GWP). 1. Introduction In 2003, the demand for mobile phones was increased since the camera was included in a mobile phone and the 3rd generation of mobile phones was introduced. In turn, the number of discarded mobile phone is rising sharply. Generally speaking, all the metallic parts of mobile phones can be recovered and recycled by using smelting and purification techniques. The recycled materials are then used to fabricate other new products."

The general goal of passive acid mine drainage (AMD) treatment is to reduce levels of acidity and metals to acceptable levels. Most treatment systems use either an oxidising or a reducing strategy. In oxidising systems, alkalinity is added along with dissolved oxygen; in reducing systems, dissolved oxygen is removed (if present) and then alkalinity is added. It is recommended that small-scale field trials be conducted as part of the methodology of selecting the best remediation strategy at AMD sites. Following successful field trials at the Sullivan Mine AMD, the Pike River Coal Company (PRCC) has shown foresight by using the same system to treat AMD generated as a result of taking a bulk sample of coal at the Pike River coal field. The system reduced acidity by 100 per cent, iron by 99 per cent, aluminium by 96 per cent, nickel by 95 per cent, manganese by 51 per cent and zinc by 99 per cent. The success of this field trial suggests that a system using a reducing strategy may be appropriate for the Pike River Adit AMD site.

A jet pump injector was developed and successfully tested, thereby demonstrating the feasibility of a jet injector for introducing coarse coal into an operating slurry face haulage system: In Phase I a variety of injection concepts were evaluated, and the jet pump was identified as best, due to its simplicity, compactness and performance potential. In Phase IIA subscale jet pump injector tests were conducted, and a computer model of a jet pump injector was developed whose performance predictions correlated well with subscale test results. In Phase IIB various system configurations were defined for integrating a jet pump injector into a fully operational underground coarse slurry face haulage system, further highlighting the feasibility and practicality of such a system. In Phase III a full-scale mobile haulage vehicle embodying a jet pump injector and coal sizing equipment was detail designed into a practical vehicle with attractive performance characteristics. More importantly, fully operational full scale jet pump injector -and feeder/breaker subassemblies were tested and proven successful in their ability to down-size coal to 3" in all 3 dimensions and to consistantly provide slurry of 4217 weight concentration at 6.4 TPM throughput under a wide range of operating conditions including zero to maximum feed rate within 5 seconds.

"On average, one out of two glass bottles coming on to the market is provided by recycling processes in Europe. Glass recycling has been started by the early of 1970s in Turkey, and the recycling amount has been reached to 70 thousand tons recently, while 4.2 million tons which represents only 25 percent of total glass manufactured, is the amount of glass collected annually for recycling in the world. The glass recycle process basically involves collecting, sorting, then crushing and grinding after which glass cullet is produced as the secondary raw material. Removing of the contaminants from the glass cullet, and then melting are the next steps. In this study, recent developments of 100% recyclable without any deterioration in quality, and never decomposable glass, are discussed detailed in terms of glass production processes.1.IntroductionIn many countries, waste glass constitutes a large proportion of solid wastes, and recycling the glass is a major environmental problem all over the world [1]. Among the diverse types of waste, glass is one of the most valuable recycling materials because it can be revived and recycled completely and hardly decomposes [2]. Between 80% and 85% of the mass output from the worldwide glass industry is either in the form of containers for the food, beverage, and pharmaceutical industries, or flat glass for building construction or for motor vehicle manufacture. Other product segments, whilst only constituting about 15% of the mass output, produce high value technical and consumer products by comparison with container and flat glass [3].In the present study, the recycling of Liquid Crystal Display (LCD), Cathode Ray Tubes (CRT) and Printed Circuit Boards (PCB) were examined. The production of glasses and glass-ceramics from glass cullet, synthesis of different compounds from recycled glass were other subjects of interest. The use of recycled glass for construction industry and using glass as aggregate were emphasized. Finally the recovery of glass fibers were investigated."

The paper describes the discovery, location and events concerning three types of heating which have occurred in recent years: a) in a district being salvaged, b) in the shaft pillar at an air-crossing, and c) in the gate side of a production district, all of which have occurred in the Beeston Seam at collieries in the deeper eastern part of the area. The paper describes the precautions, air sampling arrangements, training methods and codes of practice which have been adopted at collieries where spontaneous combustion is, or is likely to be, a hazard. The air samples taken from behind the stoppings following the sealing off of the salvaging district are examined and interpreted. The problem of effectively sealing off where more than two stoppings are required is made apparent. Other lessons have been learned as a result of these heatings and are described in the paper.

Introduction Basis For System San Juan Coal Company (SJCC) is a subsidiary of BHP Billiton. Until recently, BHP Billiton operated three surface mines in northwestern New Mexico: Navajo, San Juan, and La Plata. The San Juan and La Plata Mines supplied the San Juan Generating Station operated by Public Service of New Mexico. Stripping ratios at those operations were increasing, and by 2000 a feasibility study was underway to develop SJCC’s vast underground reserves as a replacement. Early in the evaluation and planning phase for the San Juan Underground Mine, it was determined that the target seams (Fruitland #8 and #9) had a high propensity for spontaneous combustion. Spontaneous combustion was identified as a risk, both to personnel and equipment, and to the ability of SJCC to reliably fulfill its obligation to the power plant. In the last 20 years, several western US coal mines suffered underground spontaneous combustion events and/or mine fires. Included in this group were Colorado Westmoreland’s Orchard Valley Mine (1987), RAG’s Willow Creek Mine (1998 and 2000), Oxbow’s Sanborn Creek Mine (1999), the West Elk Mine of Arch Coal (2000), Arch’s Skyline Mine (2002), Western Fuels’ Deserado Mine (1996), and the West Ridge Mine of Andalex Resources (2003). The cause for the majority of these fires was spontaneous combustion. Fighting the fires required injection of an inert gas or foam. Nitrogen and carbon dioxide were the predominant choices of inert gas. In all cases, the gasses had to be trucked in from considerable distances. Before the inert gas could be used, injection holes had to be drilled into or near the suspected fire locations. This drilling and trucking caused costly delays in the timing of the fire fighting effort, and was not as precise as desirable. Emergency purchasing of gas and pumping services was extremely expensive, running as high as $70,000 per day at one mine. As a result of the experience of other western US coal operators, and the risk inherent with spontaneous combustion at SJCC, it was decided to pursue installation of a nitrogen delivery facility on-site at SJCC. This decision was later expanded to include a continuous supply of nitrogen.

In deep and highly-stressed coal mining, advanced design practices are used to minimize the potential for damaging events to occur. Despite these design efforts, the hazard of coal mine bumps can not be completely eliminated. This paper will review current and historic work practices used internationally to minimize the hazard to miners from mining in conditions which could produce a bump. These site specific work practices have a common base in monitoring for conditions which could result in a bump and application of controls to prevent the occurrence or minimize the severity of an event where miners are working. Monitoring practices range from purely observational to semi quantitative. Control methods attempt to initiate events in a controlled manner, absorb the energy of a potential event or reduce the potential for or magnitude of an event by altering the stress conditions of the mine workings. Building from the experiences of other coal fields, an empirical framework to manage the potential hazard of coal mine bumps can be developed to enhance the level of safety provided by prudent mine design.

Libby, Montana is the site of a large vermiculite deposit that was mined between 1920 and 1990 to extract vermiculite for commercial applications such as insulation, gardening products, and construction materials. The Libby vermiculite deposit also contains amphibole minerals including tremolite, actinolite, richterite, and winchite. Historically, Libby mine workers experienced high exposures to amphibole structures, and, as a group, have experienced the health consequences of those occupational exposures. It has been suggested that Libby residents also have been and continue to be exposed to amphibole structures released during the vermiculite mining operations and therefore are at increased risk for disease. The Agency for Toxic Substance and Disease Registry (ATSDR) conducted two epidemiological-type studies of residents living in Libby and the surrounding areas to assess these risks. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) collected and analyzed exposure data in Libby and used those data to project risks of asbestos-associated disease for Libby residents. The EPA has placed the Libby Asbestos Site, which includes the mine and the town of Libby, on its National Priority List of hazardous waste sites in need of clean up. This article presents a review of the exposure studies conducted in Libby and an analysis of health risks based on the data collected in those studies. Libby mine workers have experienced elevated levels of asbestos-associated disease as a consequence of their occupational exposures to amphibole structures. Libby residents? exposures typically are substantially lower than mine workers? historical exposures, and the health risk projections for residents are, accordingly, substantially lower. © 2007 Published by Elsevier Inc. Occurrences of titanium, zircon, and other heavy minerals are widespread in Florida. Deposits concentrated as "heavy sands" by wave and wind action have been mined an or near Atlantic coastal beaches since 1916. An important inland concentration at Trail Ridge; .believed, to have formed along an ancient share line, was disclosed by preliminary investigations (1947) by the Bureau of Mines. This report describes investigations to determine the extent and grade of "heavy-sand" concentrations in other inland stabilized dune areas in the central and northeastern parts of the peninsular region of the State (fig. 1). Portions of the central highlands south of Trail Ridge and terraces and dunes in the coastal lowlands region, east and northeast of the ridge were investigated. Holes were drilled in 10 areas (see table 1 and fig. 2) along State and County roads and on private property. They were spaced 250 to 2,000 feet. apart to obtain a cross-sectional picture of "heavy-sand" content in the dune areas. These sections were generally placed in east-west directions normal to the general trend Of the peninsula to intercept one or more of the ancient shore lines in the various areas (figs. 3 to 13, incl.). A total of 433 drive piped and 333 jet holes were drilled, and 7,293 bulk and core samples were taken. Intermediate holes were placed at closer intervals when field analysis indicated 1 percent or more of heavy minerals present. All of the holes drilled and the analysis of samples that contain 1 percent or more of heavy minerals are listed in table 2. Profiles (figs. 14 to 20, inclusive) show the more favorable concentrations, which are irregular in outline and erratic in mineral content. The highest concentrations averaged 1.0 to more than 2.0 percent heavy-mineral content, but a few individual hole samples exceeded 3.0 percent in grade.

The effect of rare earth element Y (0-2.0at.%) on the microstructure of TiAl alloys at the as cast and rapidly solidified conditions has been investigated. The results show that the addition of Y greatly refined the microstructure of TiAl alloys at both conditions. The refinement is more significantly with higher Y content. The refinement of Y in the cast alloys is attributed to that the strip-shaped Y-rich phase locating on the grain boundaries impedes the grain growth during solidification. In the rapidly solidified alloys, Y-rich phase dispersing uniformly as spherical particles in the matrix acts as heterogeneous nucleation sites which increases the nucleation rate of ??phase during the ????phase transformation, and produces a refined initial microstructure during solidification. Higher cooling rate restricts the grain growth during subsequent cooling.

This bulletin is one of a series of Bureau of Mines reports dealing with mining methods, practices, and costs. A study of this subject was undertaken by the Bureau in cooperation with a large number of mining companies in 1928. This study continued for 5 years, during which engineers of the Mining Division of the Bureau visited most of the larger mines and many smaller ones in the United States, as well as several mines in Canada and Mexico. As a result of this study, 75 reports dealing with underground mining methods and costs at different mines were published as information circulars. Circulars also were issued on 6 open-pit mines and 2 gold-dredging operations. These circulars were written by the managers, superintendents, and engineers in charge of the operations, in some instances in collaboration with Bureau engineers. They were prepared according to a standard outline drawn up by the Bureau to obtain uniformity in textual treatment and in the arrangement and basis of setting up cost and operating data.

The United States Geological Survey has estimated 1 that the State of Washington contains 11,412,000,000 tons of bituminous coal and 52,442,000,000 tons of subbituminous coal, in beds more than 14 inches thick. As the present rate of production is about 4,000,000 tons a year, Washington apparently contains coal enough to supply Pacific coast markets for many years. The character of the coal beds of Washington renders the production of clean coal very difficult, and a considerable proportion of the output is washed before it is marketed. In 1915 Washington ranked fifth among the States in the amount of coal washed, though only twentieth in total output. In that year 37.9 per cent of the coal produced in the State was treated in surface cleaning plants. On account of extensive folding and faulting of the coal measures, mining in Washington presents many difficulties; therefore a description of the methods employed at some of the mines may be useful in planning operations in other regions, and is presented in this bulletin. The coals of Washington differ in quality, ranging from true lignites in Cowlitz County in the southern part of the State to anthracites in the Mount Baker district of Whatcom County, in the north~ rn part. Most of the output consists of subbituminous and bituminous coals, the latter including both coking and noncoking varieties. Analyses of the coals of the State and descriptions of the beds from which the samples were taken have been printed in publications of the United States Bureau of Mines.2 Details of coal beds and analyses of the coals of King, Kittitas, and Pierce Counties have also been published by the Washington Geological Survey; 3 and most of the coal beds of the State are described in some detail in a bulletin of the United States Geological Survey.4 In 1918 mining was in progress at 72 mines in the State 4a; 46 of these mines each employed more than 10 men underground. These mines were distributed as follows: Thurston County, 1; Lewis County, 7; Kittitas County, 14; King County, 16; Pierce County, 6; Skagit County, 1; and Whatcom County, 1. During that year a total of 5,847 men were employed, 4,172 underground and 1,675 on the surface. The average number of days worked in the State was 275, and the average yearly output per man was 706 tons. Coke is made only in Pierce County by four companies, which have a total of 341 beehive ovens. In 1918 they produced 93,699 tons of coke. Up to 1919 mining machines were little used in the State. In 1917 only 6.61 per cent of the coal :produced was undercut by machines. In that year 58.95 per cent of the coal was mined by hand, and 34.44 per cent was shot off the solid. The explosives used were as follows: Black powder, 36.6 per cent; dynamite, 38.l per cent; and permissible, 25.3 per cent. The State of Washington is divided naturally into two parts by the Cascade Mountains which extend north and south somewhat west of the middle of the State. The coal areas east of the range will hereafter be referred to as eastern Washington-though nearly all of it is west of the middle of the State-and that on the west side as western Washington. The geographical distribution of the coal fields is shown in Plate I. Exploration of the State has not been exhaustive enough to preclude the possibility of discovering, besides the foregoing, other districts that contain deposits of coal in commercial quantities.

The original work statement of this contract was entitles: 'A Accident Analysis Model for Use in Underground Coal Mines.' The contract was scheduled for a duration of 26 months and was to be in three phases: Phase I - Model Development, Phase II - Application of the Model, and Phase III - Installation, Monitoring and Evaluation of the Model. Alter three months in Phase I, it became apparent that much of the needed data for the model was nut available and could not be made available within the original study schedule. Proceeding as plumed would have resulted in a model of limited utility. Personnel from Theodore Barry and Associates and the Bureau discussed the problem in detail and mutually decided to utilize the majority of remaining funds to assist the Bureau in solving these data problems and develop a stronger ongoing capability for safety analysis within the Bureau. Both tie contractor and the bureau officials involved believed that this decision greatly enhanced the Bureau's ability to develop future accident prediction models, whose rigor would greatly exceed what was currently possible.
