A calibration of the Frantz isodynamic magnetic separator relates the current in the electromagnet and the transverse slope of the chute to the specific susceptibility at which separation is being effected. In addition to providing a rapid measure of the specific susceptibility of minerals and composite grains, the calibration provides a guide to operation of the Frantz isodynamic separator for mineral separation, and to the nature of composite grains. The most sensitive magnetic separation is obtained by using the highest practicable current and transverse slope, and the lowest practicable longitudinal slope.INTRODUCTIONProbably all minerals have a magnetic susceptibility measurable by sensitive techniques. However, magnetic separation between minerals which have low but different specific susceptibilities, and which for many purposes are considered essentially non-magnetic, has only become practicable with the development of the Frantz isodynamic separator.The construction and principle of this highly sensitive separator has been described by S. G. Frantz as an appendix to a description by 'Gaudin and Spedden (1943) of its application to the separation of sulphides constituting mill products.Various publications (e.g. Hess, 1949, Hutton, 1952) refer to its use in separating the mineral constituents of rocks, ores, and unconsolidated sands.As used in this study the Frantz isodynamic separator consists of a vibrating chute mounted centrally between the pole pieces of an electromagnet (Fig. 1). This unit may be inclined in any direction by the universal mounting, and the electromagnet current is continuously adjustable from 0 to 1·5 amperes.

The modern theory of sampling of particulate minerals essentially consists of a recent generalization of the procedures for applying and calibrating the formula usually known as ?Gy?s Formula? for sampling variance control, in which the central concept is a parameter called the liberation factor l. A model which can be experimentally adjusted was proposed by one of the authors several years ago, based on geostatistical considerations. This new model, which relates the liberation factor to the sizes of the fragments and mineral grains, solves the usual difficulties faced in the past, and permits predictions that are well verified in practice. Unfortunately, an older, arbitrary and less general formula is still widely used. The vast majority of today?s misapplications of Sampling Theory of Particulate Materials can be traced back to the use of this antiquated and generally incorrect model. Following a brief history of the models used for the liberation factor and a description of its main variable, the liberation size, and to illustrate the importance of proper modelling of l, this paper presents demonstrative calculations of the absurdity of the incorrect model using the particular case of gold mineralization as an example, followed by some more positive examples of application.

Producing oil, gas, and coal in sufficient amounts to satisfy U.S. demands for fuels, electrical power, and chemicals promises to be one of the country's major challenges during the 1970's. Adding significantly to this challenge is the urgent task of satisfying soaring fuel and power demands without destroying the natural environment or jeopardizing long-range requirements for resources. The Bureau of Mines, U.S. Department of the Interior, is engaged in a comprehensive program of research to help industry meet this challenge. This report reviews the aims of the research program and accomplishments in 1970; the first 11 sections cover coal programs, nine sect ions are then devoted to petroleum, and the concluding five sections deal with oil shale research. Figure 1 shows the nationwide distribution of Bureau of Mines energy research installations; Full addresses are given in appendix A. Many of the publications resulting from the Bureau?s energy research efforts are discussed throughout the report; others are listed in appendix B.

This report examines the feasibility of Employee Assistance Plans for the coal industry. Three issues are examined in detail. First, the prevalence of off-the-job factors such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and marital problems are examined in a sample of miners from the eastern, midwestern, and western underground coal fields. Then data were presented that examined the link between these off-the-job factors and behaviors critical to the mines such as absenteeism and turnover. Lastly, we examined the effectiveness of the major Employee Assistance Program in underground coal mining--the HELP Program. The report contains recommendations on whether coal mining companies should implement these programs and how these programs should be designed.

Identifying high value areas of unmined coal when large quantities of coal are available relative to annual markets is difficult because of the uncertainty of when the coal is to be mined. A GIS based methodology developed to value reserve coal in a producing coal region for the purpose of ad valorem taxation also identifies high value areas for mining investment. The methodology is unique in that it accounts for most mining, environmental, and market factors to determine when specific properties are to be mined. The methodology and data base are useful for directing regional exploration and acquisition activities toward most favorable areas.

The minerals that enter welding-rod coatings and fluxes are the main subject of this report. Few mineral producers know just what minerals and what grades and quantities of minerals are required by the welding trade, and it is for their information that this report has been prepared. The various methods of welding are discussed extensively enough to inform this type of audience. Specialists in welding probably will find little on welding that is of value to them, but they may learn something more about the minerals or mineral products that they use. The authors did not find it easy to prepare this publication, and any needed corrections will be welcomed. Regarding welding, research, Jenks4/ 1 points out that while the process of welding in simple in operation, the phenomena attending its use are extremely complicated, and the efficient and safe use of welding requires an understanding thereof. Although the fluxes and the coatings used have solved many problems, many other problems require the joint effort of the whole industry; therefore, it is hoped that this report will be found of practical value.

Peruvian legislation requires the preparation of an Environmental Impact Study (EIS) for new and expanding mines/beneficiation facilities and the preparation and implementation of an Environmental Adjustment and Management Program (PAMA) to control and mitigate environmental impacts associated with existing mining/beneficiation activities. Shepherd Miller, Inc., developed guidance documents for preparing an EIS and PAMA for Peru's Ministry of Energy and Mines and presented workshops to Peru's mining industry on preparing an EIS and PAMA. This paper discusses the process and approach taken and the results.

"Although CO2 content indicates the quantity of carbonate in altered basaltic rocks, it does not measure the intensity of carbonate alteration. CO/CaO molar ratios, which correlate with the relative proportions of individual carbonate species, measure the intensity of carbonatization. The Timmins gold area is characterized by pervasive carbonatization, with large parts of the area having CO2/Ca0 ratios greater than 1, representing C02 supersaturation relative to CaO. The mean CO/CaO in the Timmins area is0.67, compared to 0.13 in two unmineralized control areas. Regional arsenic abundance in the gold-bearing area averages 4 ppm, compared to about 0.35 ppm for the non-mineralized areas. The average K20 and Rb abundances are similar in both mineralized and non-mineralized areas (about 0.30% K20 and 7 ppm Rb). Although there appears to have been no wholesale addition of K20 or Rb to the mineralized area from external sources, these alkalies have been redistributed internally, resulting in patterns of local enrichments and depletions which are characteristic of the mineralized region.Local target anomalies associated with known mineralization consist of CO2/Ca0 > 1.5, As > 10 ppm and K2O > 0. 75%. Not all three values are required to be above these thresholds in order to identify local targets. Combinations such as C02/ Ca0 > 1.5 and As < 10 ppm, CO/CaO 1-1.5 and K20 > 0. 75 or K20 > 0. 75 and As > 10 ppm are equally indicative of proximity to gold occurrences. Gold-bearing veins and associated anomalies occur throughout the entire volcanic succession and are not restricted to any particular stratigraphic horizons. The levels and patterns of alteration and occurrences of gold appear to be structurally controlled."

An evaluation of blasting procedures in surface mining operations was undertaken to determine means for improving safety. The objectives of the study were to: 1. Develop guidelines for safer blasting practices 2. Specify changes or additions in regulations concerning the use of explosives 3. Identify areas in which additional knowledge needs to be developed. As a basis for the evaluation, an idealized blasting cycle was prepared. Developed in the form of a scenario of surface mining operations, this synthesis of good mining practices served as the standard against which observed activities were compared. Blasting hazards were divided into two categories: those known to exist and those which are potential. Known hazards were identified in terms of situations which have actually resulted in explosives-related accidents. The evidence for known hazards was obtained primarily from MESA records of mine accidents. Potential hazards were identified by observation of mining activities and consultations with mining, explosive industry and government regulatory agency personnel.

The U.S. Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board, investigated the potential of using northeastern Minnesota papermill waste sludges as a binder for Mesabi Range iron ore (taconite) concentrate. Sludges from five different commercial papermill waste treatment operations were evaluated in laboratory tests. Except for the coarsest sludge, all were fairly easy to blend with the taconite concentrate using conventional mixing methods. The coarsest sludge had to be reslurried at 2 pct solids before adding it to the concentrate in order to obtain pellets without visible sludge clumps. Drying and grinding the sludges made them less effective as binders because of a lower degree of rehydration. On a dry weight equivalent basis, twice as much raw sludge binder was required to obtain similar pellet physical properties as with bentonite; however, the pellets made with raw sludge had superior metallurgical properties. Over 30 pct higher reduction rates and over 1500 C higher softening temperatures were obtained with sludge binder than with bentonite. Sludge D, which had the lowest fiber and the highest alkali metal content, resulted in the lowest reducibility enhancement. Even though more raw sludge was required than bentonite, the sludges have virtually no value, and therefore may provide a cost-effective additive binder for producing improved metallurgical-quality pellets. Large-scale testing has not been done to confirm these laboratory results.

As recently as 1915, helium was available only in very small quantities at a cost equivalent to $2,500 per cubic foot. It was a laboratory curiocity, and its properties were of interest to a limited number of scientists (11).3/ During the past 30 years, however, helium has grown from a plaything of scientists to a factor of importance in the prosecution of the recent war. Navy blimps filled with nonflammable helium proved to be more than a match for German submarines operating in the Atlantic. American bombers were able to fly unheard-of distances to drop bombs on Tokyo, Nagoya, Yokahama, and other Japanese cities because they had been made lighter with magnesium, arc-welded in a helium atmosphere. The Army utilized helium-filled radio-sonde balloons to obtain vital information concerning weather conditions affecting D-day invasions and other military maneuvers.

Blasting activities on the surface or underground necessarily involve the most sensitive aspect of environment remediation, human response or annoyance. Such effects are unavoidably characteristic of those activities. For this reason, blasting activities are governed by law and official regulations under surveillance of authorities, where companies and explosives engineers have to proceed within proper limits. Subject of the paper is a practical way of handling some necessary vibration standards being focused on blasting activities. [The Bureau of rides is making a general study of the occurrence of the Clinton red iron ores of Alabama. In the course of this study, it developed that the iron-ore seams of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas were virtually unexplored., and the nature and extent of the ore deposits were undetermined. As a part of the work of the project, the Bureau investigated the occurrence of red iron ore in the .areas. Eighty-four channel samples, representing 317.6 linear feet, were taken from l2 locations along the outcrop of the red iron-ore seams, Ten diamond-drill holes, amounting to 3915.5 linear feet, were drilled. In these areas, commercial- and marginal-grade ores of minable thickness have been shown. It is estimated that 4,500,000 tons of indicated ore and 6,700,000 tens of inferred commercial-grade ore averaging 5.1 feet thick, 47.6 percent Fe, 26.1 percent insoluble, 0.1 percent CaO, and 0.04 percent P; 7,200,000 tins of inferred marginal grade ore averaging 6.1 feet thick, 36.2 percent Fe, .35.0 percent insoluble, 3.9 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P; and 18,500,000 tons of ferruginous sandstone averaging 12.2 feet thick, 19.2 percent re, 50.1 percent insoluble, 9.6 percent CaO, and 0.14 percent P are present in the areas.. All tonnages are estimated as gross tons of recoverable ore in place, based&apos; on 65-percent mining recovery. In accordance with established policy of the Bureau of Mines of publishing factual data as soon as possible after completion of field work, this description of the Woodstock and Bucksville areas is presented. THIS BULLETIN analyzes and summarizes research at the Bureau of Mines dealing with the preparation, properties, and reactions of iron carbides in the period 1948-60, part of which was sponsored by Wright Air Development Laboratories. The objective was to develop better catalysts for the synthesis of methane and higher hydrocarbons from hydrogen and carbon monoxide. The investigations resulted in the first adequate characterization of epsilon iron carbide, which later proved to be an important intermediate in the tempering of martensite in steel. At temperatures near 170° C, the carbon in carbon monoxide reacts nearly quantitatively with finely divided alpha iron to form an iron carbide in which the metal atoms occupy the positions of the close packed hexagonal arrangement with lattice parameters of ao=2.754 A and co=4.349 A. The carbide has a composition within 2 atomic percent of that required for the formula Fe2C, a Curie point of about 370° C, a specific magnetization of 160.4 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, and a ferromagnetic moment of 1.70 Bohr magnetons. Epsilon iron carbide can be converted to chi iron carbide by thermal treatment at 343° C for about 70 hours. The chi iron carbide so formed has a Curie point of 247° C, a specific magnetization of 142.5 ergs per gauss-gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 5.5 Bohr rnagnetons per iron atom. Direct synthesis of this carbide from carbon monoxide at 240° C indicates a composition within 7 atomic percent of that required for Fe2C. Chi iron carbide can be converted to cementite at 550° C in about 315 minutes. The theta iron carbide so prepared has a Curie point of 210° C, a specific magnetization of 147.3 ergs per gauss gram Fe at 50° C, a ferromagnetic moment of 1.72 Bohr magnetons per iron atom, and a paramagnetic moment of 3.9 Bohr magnetons per iron atom. Pure chi iron carbide reacts to form theta iron carbide by the elimination of free carbon. In the presence of an excess of free iron in intimate contact with the carbide, chi iron carbide reacts with the free iron to form theta iron carbide. The second reaction proceeds at an appreciable rate at 320° C and can be used to snythesize finely divided theta iron carbide with no free-carbon impurity at low temperatures. The ease of the reaction in the presence of free iron suggests that chi iron carbide is an intermediate in the tempering of epsilon iron carbide to theta iron carbide as it proceeds in steels. Experiments on carbon steel show that the magnetic moment of the iron atoms in martensite is about 2.2 Bohr magnetons per atom, a value approximately the same as that of the iron atoms in alpha iron. The Curie points of epsilon iron carbide, chi iron carbide, and theta iron carbide were found -in various specimens of tempered steel to be 10° to 20° C lower than normal values. This shift is probably the result of manganese in solid solution. Preparations of various compositions of epsilon iron carbonitrides show many effects of extensive isomorphism between epsilon iron carbide and epsilon iron nitride. The action of carbon monoxide on finely divided alpha iron at 400° C results in free carbon deposits containing filaments about 0.1 micron in diameter and several times as long. The filaments are characterized by nuclei of dense material located midway from each end of the filament. Although carbiding to near completion at 240° C over periods of about 300 hours produces a preparation containing no appreciable percentage of epsilon iron carbide, very brief periods of carbiding of the order of a minute result in the formation of detectable epsilon iron carbide even at temperatures as high as 325° C. The data indicate that epsilon iron carbide is an intermediate in the formation of chi iron carbide during its formation from carbon monoxide in the gas phase. Attempts to convert cementite to chi iron carbide by cold work increased the Curie point but did not change the X-ray powder diffraction pattern.

The Florida phosphate industry currently produces more than 80 pct of the total U.S. marketable output of phosphate rock. Because phosphate is one of three principal nutrients used in formulating a complete fertilizer, it is imperative that an uninterrupted supply of this material be available to meet the agricultural requirements of the United States while maintaining a viable phosphate industry which is competitive in world markets. As a result of an evaluation made by the Bureau of Mines, five areas were identified that affect the overall production and projected growth of the phosphate industry in Florida. These areas relate to the technological ability of the industry to comply with environmental regulations and performance standards by using the best available technology. The most significant technical problem facing the industry is the management of the clay fraction rejected during the beneficiation of phosphate ores. Other areas of concern are environmental restrictions and regulatory requirements, issues associated with mining and reclamation of wetlands, reclamation of other disturbed lands, and consumptive water use. Each of these areas is reviewed, with major emphasis placed on the current state-of-the-art processes for treatment and management of phosphatic clays.

"The toxicity reduction of emissions from two diesel engines by the emulsification of water into fuel oil was investigated to determine the applicability of such systems to underground mining machinery. . The engines studied were: 1) the Deut; F6L7J4, four-stroke, air-cooled, 6-cylinder, V-configuration, indirect-injection (IDl) engine, and 2) the Detroit Deisel Allison Division 8V7JN, two-stroke, water-cooled, 8-cylinder, V-configuration, direct-injection (Dl) engine.The application of emulsified fuel treatment to the two-stroke engine did not prove to be practicable. In the case of the Deutz engine, however, substantial benefit resulted. For a modest J5 per cent water content in the fuel and an injection timing of24° BTDC, approximate reductions of40 per cent in the concentrations of both particulate matter and nitric oxide (NO) were produced. These reductions were accompanied by insignificant changes in other toxic constituents. The net result was an approximate 30 per cent reduction in the over-all exhaust toxicity for typical LHD operation as assessed by the Health Effects Index criterion. This toxicity reduction represents a significant advance from the points of view of an improved underground environment and/or reduced ventilation costs."

Criteria have been fully developed for determining the optimum size of oil and gas well blocks. The criteria lead to the formation of well barrier pillars which are, of themselves, inherently stable and take account of variable mine roof and floor conditions. The criteria ensure, through considerations of ground movement, that strains transmitted to well casings, are within tolerable limits of casing specifications. The criteria cater for well barrier pillars in multi-seam mining situations and where previous old mining has taken place. The criteria maintain flexibility in being adaptable to local mine design situations. The criteria are applicable to proposed extraction thicknesses up to 15 feet at depths up to 2,400 feet. The criteria are related to producing wells and to abandoned wells. In the latter connection, various states of well abandonment are recognised.
