The public interest in the Alaskan situation is such that, with the consent of the President, I have concluded, at the request of the American Mining Congress, to make at this time a candid, if somewhat informal, expression of the views I have formed as Secretary of the Interior, under whose official supervision much of the administration of the Territory is now placed. Pressure of other matters imperatively requiring attention has prevented their presentation in as precise and comprehensive a form as I had hoped. The absence of the President from Washington has also prevented the submission to him of what I have prepared. I wish to say, however, that no one is more earnest than he in the desire to see a policy of prompt and wise development inaugurated in Alaska, and that the general policy contained in this address has been discussed with him, meets his approval, and will have his support. I have recently returned from an altogether too brief but nevertheless a most interesting and profitable visit to those portions of Alaska that are more immediately involved in the questions now under public consideration. Favored by extraordinary weather and the cooperation of steamship and railroad lines and the assistance of all of the governmental agencies, including the Revenue-Cutter Service, I visited every port in Alaska that seems likely in the near future to become an important entrance to the country. I examined all of the harbor and town sites which for this purpose have attracted any considerable public attention. I traversed the entire length of each of the three railroads that have been constructed in the Terri.tory and made a short trip from White Horse down the upper Yukon. Both before and during the journey I examined a mass of books, records,' and papers relating to the country and its resources. I had conferences with official committees representing the principal communities I visited and with numerous individuals, residents both of the coast and of the interi.or, and conferred with engineers, miners, prospectors, railroad officials, business and professional men.

"The Ventura County Medical Center Hospital Replacement Wing project consists of the construction of a 2- to 3-story building with a basement encompassing the entire footprint and two corridors connecting the new hospital wing to existing buildings. The site is located in the Ventura Basin where strong ground shaking has been observed during moderate to large earthquakes on nearby faults. The upper 90 feet of the soil consists of loose to medium dense finegrained sands and low plasticity silts that are potentially susceptible to liquefaction, seismic densification, and hydroconsolidation. Ground settlement associated with a large seismic event on a nearby fault is estimated at 20 to 26 inches. To account for the anticipated ground settlement, auger pressure grouted (APG) piles gaining support below the potentially liquefiable soil were selected for the support of the proposed structure. Challenges for pile design included the anticipated earthquake-induced ground settlement, high downdrag loads, low soil lateral capacity during strong ground shaking, and the effect of pile installation on the performance of the existing adjacent buildings and the installed shoring system. The replacement hospital is supported on over 600 APG piles, with lengths varying between 120 and 140 feet. Axial pile capacities were verified with an extensive indicator pile installation program and dynamic pile load testing.INTRODUCTIONThe Hospital Replacement Wing (HRW) project is at the Ventura County Medical Center (VCMC) in Ventura County, Southern California (Figure 1). The VCMC consists of three interconnected hospital buildings (Buildings 303, 304, and Fainer Building), the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building, two mental health buildings, a medical office building, an emergency generator building, and surface parking lots. The HRW is near the center of the campus, adjacent to several existing buildings.The HRW is a 2- to 3-story structure, with a 15- to 20-foot-deep basement beneath the entire 95,000-square-foot building footprint. The HRW project includes a Loading Dock, a four-level corridor to the Fainer Building (Fainer connector), and a two-level corridor to the Medical Laboratory/Cafeteria Building (Café connector). The corridors are structurally separated from the existing buildings. Typical dead plus live load column loads for the HRW range from about 635 kips to 935 kips and total loads range from about 860 kips to 1,295 kips."

Up to 1914 almost all of the world's supply of potash came from Germany and Alsace. With the cessation of shipments from Germany during the World War the importance of a domestic supply was evident, During the past 15 years the United States has been working toward the establishment of a domestic potash industry which would end foreign dominance in this commodity. The Federal government has taken an active part in this program. As its share in the work, the Bureau of Mines has ascertained the potash resources in certain districts through core drilling and has engaged in a comprehensive program of research on the extraction of potash from its various minerals. Until the passage of the Winter bill (H. R. 496) by Congress in 1928 the Bureau of Mines had not been able to give any consideration to the western ores, wyomingite (leucite) and alunite. With the Passage of this bill, however, the ray was opened for the extension of the potash studies to cover these materials.

Increased exploration in Alaska has resulted in many requests to the Bureau of Mines for facts about the mineral resources and mining conditions in the Territory. This report presents information about the minerals of Southeastern Alaska and the factors that affect development of a mining industry in that area. Southeastern Alaska is a narrow coastal strip of rugged mountains and many islands. The climate is mild, with an average annual temperature of 40° and heavy rainfall. Geologically, the region is favorable for deposition of ore; geographic-ally, it is difficult to prospect and to develop, except along areas immediately adjacent to the coastline.

Ceveland-Cliffs uses a specialized software package in mine planning at the Empire Mine, an iron ore mine it manages on Michigan’s Marquette Iron Range. The application puts together years of mining experience that began in the early 1960s on the eastern end of the Marquette Range. The Empire Mine is in its 38th year of production. It uses the software to model a complex and highly variable low-grade magnetite ore body, capturing the economics of mining and processing to the final product. With special attention given to geostatistical methods, the software is used for all geologic modeling, ore reserve estimation, ore control, pit design and short- and long-range planning.

Technical problems associated with the cleanup of historic mines are not new. Nor are they unique to the mining industry or the governmental agencies addressing them. Both face the same issues and challenges of defining the problems, evaluating remediation options and finding the most economic and effective solutions.

"Aeromagnetic data can be useful in helping to delineate structures and rock types in gold exploration. Magnetic anomalies associated with Archean volcanic belts in northeastern Ontario can be quickly and effectively analyzed in profile form with the use of model curves. The model curves help to locate contacts between strata. They also help to estimate the magnetite content of the rocks and their depth beneath overburden.An aeromagnetic map of part of Catharine Township, Ontario has been analyzed with the aid of model curves. Several magnetic rock types, potential fault zones and areas of relatively thick overburden were delineated.IntroductionIn any exploration program, a good understanding of the stratigraphy, rock types and structure enhances the possibility of success. For example, environments which host gold deposits in the Abitibi Volcanic Belt may be characterized as follows (Jensen, 1980; Pyke, 1980):(I) They have major faults, especially as tectonic boundaries between volcanic piles which include mafic and ultramafic rocks and clastic sedimentary rocks or gneisses.(2) They have subvolcanic felsic intrusions.(3) They have extensive carbonitization, with or without carbonate and sulphide-facies iron formation.In all cases, delineation of structure and rock type should be a major objective in exploration. The analysis of magnetic data can be a useful tool in this task. This paper is presented with the purpose of describing the application of the magnetic method to gold exploration in Archean volcanic terrains.Magnetic AnalysisTotal-intensity magnetic contour maps can be used to discriminate rock units according to differences in magnetization. However, because of smoothing of texture resulting from the compilation procedure and the fact that survey lines are widely spaced, contours should not be directly used for quantitative analysis. A much more definitive means of magnetic analysis is provided by the use of the original profile or chart recordings. Model curves provide a basis for analyzing these profiles both accurately and rapidly."

One of the biggest challenges for the mining industry is, quite literally, how to the keep the equipment rolling. There is a limited amount of companies that manufacture the 4.2-m- (14-ft-) tall, 5,670-kg (12,500-lb-) tires needed for the haul trucks that are approaching the 362 t (400 st) pay-load class, such as Terex?s MT6300-AC and Caterpillar?s 797F. And, while these might be the most impressive tires, they are not the only ones that are in short supply. The shortage of tires has affected just about every kind of machine, and the demand for those tires has been extremely high for more than five years with no end to the shortage in site. American Tire Corp. (www.americantire.us) is one of the companies working to supply tires to the mining industry. It announced that the demand for its 1.6-m (63-in.) tires that have a zero failure history globally is great and that the company signed contracts worth more than $500 million at MinExpo. In currently used mining methods, blasting techniques often causes dilution of valuable ore and results in costly processing requirements. In the context of narrow vein mining of thin and highly concentrated orebodies there is a need of a mining method that can reduce dilution in order to remain economically viable. This research project explored the viability of a new mining technology, thermal fragmentation, in narrow vein mining. Thermal fragmentation technology uses a flame jet to produce extreme heat that spalls the surrounding rock to a strategically located drill hole, as an alternative to traditional blasting. This paper creates a net present value (NPV) model of a mining method using thermal fragmentation, as well as for an existing method used for narrow vein mining; comparisons and evaluations were made regarding the feasibility of the new technology. It was found that while overall costs for thermal fragmentation were relatively high, reductions in wages, haulage and processing costs, as well as increased productivity and ore recovery, meant that the new method would improve the financial performance of any operation. These results identify that there is an opportunity to introduce the thermal fragmentation technology to narrow vein mines within Australia, in order to lower costs and increase profit.

During the past two years the Bureau of Mines has issued a series of mimeographed reports giving the results of research work and experiments conducted as part of its war minerals investigations. In this bulletin the reports on manganese are presented, which range in scope from the beneficiation of the ore to the utilization of the metal. The bulletin is in eleven chapters, each comprising a separate report, arranged in the order given below. 1. General information regarding manganese, by C. M. Weld. 2. Uses of manganese other than in steel making, by W. C. Phalen. 3. Problems involved in the concentration and utilization of domestic low-grade manganese ores, by Edmund Newton. 4. Preparation of manganese ore, by W. R. Crane. 5. Leaching of manganese ores with sulphur dioxide, by C. E. Van Barneveld. 6. The Jones process for concentrating manganese ores; results of laboratory investigations, by Peter Christianson and W. H. Hunter. 7. Cost of producing ferromanganese ores, by C. M. Weld and W. R. Crane. 8. Production of manganese alloys in the blast furnace, by P. H. Royster. 9. National importance of allocating low-ash coke to the man- ganese-alloy furnaces, by P. H. Royster. 10. Electric smelting of domestic manganese ores, by H. W. Gillett and C. E. Williams. 11. Use of manganese alloys in open-hearth steel practice, by Samuel L. Hoyt. As each chapter was originally prepared as a unit, there is neces- sarily some duplication and overlapping. With certain exceptions, however, each paper is reproduced in practically its original form. In chapter 1, covering certain general phases of the industry, such as uses, specifications, prices, and statistics, the subject matter has been somewhat modified in view of changes in conditions.About 95 per cent of the manganese consumed in the United States goes into the manufacture of steel. The remaining 5 per cent is used in a number of minor industries, the chief of which is the manufacture of dry cells. These minor uses are described in chapter 2. No discussion of the geology of manganese eres is presented, but a short bibliography on the subject is appended. With few excep- tions the manganese deposits of the United States are irregular, pockety, and uncertain. Largely for this reason, mining methods are crude and hardly warrant descriptions. The concentration of manganese ores, however, is an important problem and involves some details not common to other ores. Chapter 3 discusses the concentration and utilization of low-grade ones, notes the relationship of concentration to metallurgical prao- tices, outlines concentrating processes, and treats of commercial problems. In general, as regards concentration methods, manganese ores may be divided into two groups, as follows: (1) Ores permitting mechanical separation of the manganese minerals and the gangue, and (2) ores in which the manganese minerals and the gangues are so intimately associated that separation requires some hydrometal- lurgical or pyrometallurgical process. Heretofore, attention has been confined almost wholly to mechanical separation, chiefly by gravity. In fact, so far as known, all production of concentrates has been by wet gravity methods, although during the war some companies investigated the commercial pessibilities of magnetic separation and reported favorable results, the construction of one magnetic con- centration mill being started. The usual wet gravity methods are described in chapter 4. During the war, the Bureau of Mines undertook investigations of methods applicable to ores of group 2. A hydrometallurgical process involving leaching with sulphur dioxide was studied at the mining experiment station of the bureau at Tucson, Ariz. The results of this work, presented in chapter 5, indicate that the process is metallurgically feasible but the cost makes it unattractive. The results of an investigation of a pyrometallurgical process known as the Jones process are presented in chapter 6. The process, which is still in the experimental stage, was found to be metal- lurgically sound. The manganese product is not a concentrate but an alloy, made directly from a lean unconcentrated ore. The custom- ary method is to manufacture alloys from high-grade ores or from concentrates of leaner ores. A discussion of the costs of ferro-grade manganese ores is pre- sented in chapter 7. This discussion is in general terms only, but should be of use in so far as it relates to competitive conditions.

Asbestos crystallizes within rock formations undergoing intense deformation characterized by folding, faulting, shearing, and dilation. Some of these conditions have prevailed during formation of the taconite iron ore deposits in the eastern Mesabi Iron Range of Minnesota. This range includes the Peter Mitchell Taconite Mine at Babbitt, Minnesota. The mine pit is over 8 miles long, up to 1 mile wide. Fifty three samples were collected from 30 sites within areas of the pit where faulting, shearing and folding occur and where fibrous minerals might occur. Eight samples from seven collecting sites contain significant amounts of ferroactinolite amphibole that is partially to completely altered to fibrous ferroactinolite. Two samples from two other sites contain ferroactinolite degraded to ropy masses of fibers consisting mostly of ferrian sepiolite as defined by X-ray diffraction and TEM and SEM X-ray spectral analysis. Samples from five other sites contain unaltered amphiboles, however some of these samples also contain a very small number of fiber bundles composed of mixtures of grunerite, ferroactinolite, and ferrian sepiolite. It is proposed that the alteration of the amphiboles was caused by reaction with water-rich acidic fluids that moved through the mine faults and shear zones. The fibrous amphiboles and ferrian sepiolite collected at the Peter Mitchell Mine composes a tiny fraction of one percent of the total rock mass of this taconite deposit; an even a smaller amount of these mineral fragments enter the ambient air during mining and milling. These fibrous minerals thus do not present a significant health hazard to the miners nor to those non-occupationally exposed. No asbestos of any type was found in the mine pit. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. As a part of our study of how coal mine dusts injure the lung we have studied the effects of dusts and dust-exposed pulmonary alveolar macrophages (PAMs) on the growth of lung fibroblasts (LF). Fibroblasts were cultured near confluence in low-serum medium, either alone or in the presence of dusts, dusts plus PAMs, dust leachates or superriatants of dust-exposed PAM cultures. We report here provisional conclusions, based on initial observations. Rat LF were relatively unresponsive to direct effects of dusts, showing weak stimulation in only a few cultures, and there was no evidence that dust-exposed rat PAMs had released any growth-regulatory products. In contrast, guinea pig cells were more responsive to the dusts. The pattern of responses was quite complex. Three of the dusts stimulated LF directly (with no mediation by PAMs). Two dusts were essentially inert when added directly to fibroblast cultures, either with or without PAMs, but their leachates were active: 867 leachate was inhibitory and RF leachate was stimulatory. Dust 1361, either directly in the cultures or as an aqueous leachate, was stimulatory, and it activated cocultured PAMs to stimulate LF growth; however, supernatant products of 1361-stimulated PAMs were inhibitory. Direct exposure to 1192 stimulated LF, but its leachate was inert; cocultured PAMs exposed to 1192 had weak stimulatory effects, but supernatants of 1192-exposed PAMs were mildly inhibitory. MP3-3 had effects similar to 1192, except that the cocultured, dust-exposed PAMs had no effect on growth. We conclude 1) that guinea pig lung cells are more responsive to dusts than are rat lung cells, 2) that dusts can influence growth of LF by four kinds of interaction (by direct dust-cell interaction, by release of soluble dust components into the culture medium, by activating P AMs to exert direct cell-cell interactions, and by activating P AMs to release growth regulatory products into the culture medium), 3) that each kind of interaction may be neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the dust tested, 4) that four of the dusts tested were neutral, inhibitory or stimulatory, depending on the assay (the fifth <lust was either neutral or stimulatory), and 5) that the effects of soluble mediators (leachates or products of activated PAMs) frequently did not correspond with the direct dust-cell or PAM-fibroblast effects. These results suggest that the nature of the dust-lung interaction at the level of cells and molecules is exceedingly complex. These observations need to be confirmed and extended to determine what characteristics of the dusts determine the nature of the cellular responses, and to determine which patterns of responses are detrimental and which are beneficial in the overall health of the dust-exposed lung.

Introduction The last two or three decades have been marked by striking developments in methods of mining and tunnelling. In view .of increased competition and various economic factors, intensive &apos; mining has been largely practised, and no effort seems to have been spared to increase outputs and lower the cost of production. In metalliferous mining, the compressed-air rock-drill has effected marked savings in this direction, while in coal mining, the coal-cutting machine has revolutionized mining methods and materially contributed to economical working. Yet, for many years, little or no advance was made in methods of handling the rock, or coal, once it had been successfully broken. Loading by hand is, undoubtedly, the most laborious occupation in the whole of mining operations, and it is also the greatest single item that enters into the cost of production. In view of this, the lag of improved handling methods behind the process of winning the rock or coal is rather surprising. The point, however, was appreciated by mining men, and the introduction of various forms of conveyors and loaders is the result. The belt conveyor, the chain conveyor, the shaker conveyor, and the mechanical shovel entered various parts of the field, but it was left to scraping to provide a method of both conveying and loading. From the pure loading point of view, the choice lies between mechanical shovels and scraper loaders. While it is realised that each of these machines has applications peculiar to itself, yet it should be realised that much work which has hitherto been done by mechanical shovels can be done equally effectively with scraper loaders and at a considerable saving both from the point of view of initial outlay and upkeep.

On a regular basis, mine personnel should obtain air samples directly from active underground areas as well as remotely from sealed locations. These samples provide mine officials with data relative to the makeup of the various atmospheres. Should conditions underground change, these results can provide a baseline that can assist officials in determining the extent of change. Relating the concentrations of individual gases to time, applying gases to equations, and examining their change over time are tools that have been successfully used to determine if a heating event exists and, if so, the extent of the emergency. These atmospheric status equations have either been developed for the mining industry or adapted from other industries. They serve as tools to assist personnel in determining the condition of underground mine atmospheres. As long as the problem area continues to be ventilated, certain gases, gas ratios, and equations can be used to determine if a fire exists, what type of material could be burning, and what quantity of coal is burning. Once the mine or the involved section has been temporarily sealed, gases, ratios, and gas-derived equations can assist personnel in determining how conditions within the sealed volume are changing over time. To alleviate potential explosions when fresh air is once again introduced into the sealed volume, equations and a diagram have been developed to predict the likelihood of an explosive atmosphere. Similarly, prior to commencing recovery of a mine or section, equations exist that can assist in determining if the fire will rekindle when air is reintroduced. This paper serves as an overview to remind and/or instruct readers about gas-sampling methodologies and gas analyses to assist in determining the status of underground atmospheres.

Cooling tower design has not advanced significantly in the last decade. Recognising this, Outotec has developed an innovative horizontal outflow cooling tower with increased performance compared to conventional design cooling towers.Outotec&#174; Cooling Towers operate today in applications such as spent electrolyte cooling in zinc plants and for gypsum removal before copper solvent extraction. In such applications the use of this latest design has enabled increased production and lower maintenance costs in the downstream operations.In actual operations, the cooling performance has been confirmed at start-up, and has demonstrated that the towers operate in accordance with the CFD modelling. In the last three years these towers have proven themselves in commercial operation to operate with high efficiency and availability.This case study will outline comparative data, collected over two years at a site where both Outotec and conventional cooling towers are operating. The data shows that Outotec cooling towers require less than half the maintenance time of conventional cooling towers, when adjusted to a total solution flow basis. A close partnership approach with the site has allowed continual development, ensuring high availability and high performance.Experience with previous cooling tower installations guided the development of maintenance philosophies and procedures; this resulted in a design where maintenance intensive components were accessible from the top of the cooling tower. Compósitos magneto-elétricos (ME) combinam fases magnetostrictivas e piezoelétricas e podem ser utilizados na geração de energia a partir de vibrações e campos magnéticos presentes no ambiente, sendo também aplicáveis em sensores de campo magnético e em redes de sensores sem fio. Neste trabalho, um compósito ME foi processado pelo método cerâmico com 15 vol% CoFe2O4 (ferrita de cobalto) como fase magnetostrictiva e 85 vol% BaTiO3 como fase piezoelétrica. É mostrada a relação entre os parâmetros de processamento/sinterização e a microestrutura do compósito ME, com três tipos diferentes de arranjo das fases: particulado (obtido por dois diferentes métodos) e em camadas. Foram compactadas pastilhas dos compósitos para sinterização nas temperaturas de 1.200ºC, 1.300ºC e 1.400ºC por 4h, sendo que ocorreu a fusão da pastilha sinterizada a 1.400ºC. As amostras sinterizadas foram observadas em microscópio eletrônico de varredura (MEV), onde foram analisadas as características de porosidade, tamanho de grão e a distribuição das fases na microestrutura. Foram realizadas também análises cristalográficas por difração de raios-X (DRX), de espectroscopia RAMAN e de espectroscopia de energia dispersiva (EDS). Foram relacionados os parâmetros de processamento utilizados com os resultados obtidos.

"As a part of the United States Department of the Interior program for the development and use of Alaska raw materials, the Bureau of Mines is conducting an investigation of deposits f nonmetallic minerals accessible to the Alaska Railroad for use in building materials in the Alaska Railroad-belt area. The results of the investigations, to date, indicate that raw materials for the production of brick products are in plentiful supply as clay in the Anchorage area, as fire clay at Sheep Mountain, and as shale in the Healy Creek coal formations near Healy, Alaska.Shale for the production of lightweight aggregate or Haydite occurs near mile 67 on the Glenn Highway, and preliminary tests give excellent results. Physical tests are new in progress on commercial-size concrete building units made with this aggregate. Another shale deposit in the same formation was located at mile 16 on the Matanuska Branch of the Alaska Railroad, and preliminary tests give comparable results.Natural lightweight aggregate in tree form of pumice and pumicite occurs in Katmai National Monument and has been used with excellent results in lightweight-building units in Anchorage and Fairbanks. These deposits will be investigated in more detail by the Bureau of Mines during 1952.One small perlite deposit near Healy, Alaska, showed excellent expanding properties, and the product compares favorably with commercial perlites being used in the States for plaster and concrete aggregates. Additional investigation by the Bureau of Mines to delimit the known occurrence and, if possible, discover others were planned for the 1951 field season.The pumice from Katmai National Monument also was considered for use as a pozzolan in pozzolan-portland concrete. Tests by the Bureau of Reclamation indicate that the pumice sample submitted by the Bureau of Mines would be satisfactory in strength development but is not outstanding. Natural activity is good and is greatly improved by calcination at 1,4000 F. Water requirements and shrinkage also are satisfactory. However, the material is ineffective in reducing expansion owing to alkali-aggregate reaction; and, if reactive aggregate is used to make concrete, it would not insure against excessive expansion. An attempt will, be made during the 1952 field season to delimit pumicite deposits along the Alaska Peninsula more amenable for use in pozzolan-portIand concrete.Because the Railroad belt has such a rigorous climate, insulation for new construction is of prime importance. Luring the Bureau of Mines, investigation of building materials all samples were submitted for chemical analyses as possible sources of raw materials for the production of rock wool, one of the best insulation mediums. Four areas having deposits of the required constitu¬ents were located as follows: Anchorage area, with Potter limestone and argillite; Cantwell-Windy area, with limestone and shale; West Fork of the Chulitna River area, with limestone and agrillite; and Homer-Seldoyla area, with Seldovia limestone and Homer clay. It was planned to take bulk samples of these formations and submit them for testing during the 1951 field season."

Introduction Technological advances in mining and processing have started the domestic mining and mineral industry back on the road to competitiveness. A massive trade deficit, however, coupled with foreign competition and more government regulations threaten to slow this recovery. So say mining executives in Colorado and Minnesota. These industry decision-makers agree that their challenge is to continue the technical innovations of their industry. The journey back to profitability and competitiveness means improved products, they say, but at lower production costs. At separate gatherings in January, officials in both states said that they believe their industry is up to the challenge. Worker attitudes will have to change, they understand, and management styles will need adjusting. And, while they are willing to make the necessary adjustments, they are going to need some help. Or, at the very least, less interference from the federal government. Foreign markets, all but closed to American products, must be opened up on a reciprocal basis. The nation&apos;s $170 billion trade deficit is a priority item that can no longer be ignored. And, closer to home, federal and state environmental regulations concerning mineral production must themselves be monitored. 1987 in Colorado While Colorado&apos;s service and trade industries should have a fairly good 1987, the state&apos;s mining industry can expect another disappointing year filled with layoffs and declining profits, according to the Colorado Mining Association. Once again, foreign competition and government regulations are seen as the main reasons for the mineral industry&apos;s woes. And state mining officials see little relief until at least the 1990s. Speaking to a group of reporters at its annual press briefing in Denver, CMA officials said Colorado&apos;s overall nonfuel mineral production is expected to fluctuate between a flat and declining growth trend. Mining employment in the state is expected to fall by 400 people this year, to about 7500. In 1981, Colorado mines employed as many as 17,800 people. During the 1970s and early 1980s, the employment rate in mining in the state grew by 12% annually, according to a summary report compiled by the CMA. Last year, worldwide molybdenum production continued to exceed demand US moly producers, therefore, were forced to continue their familiar path of production cutbacks, as well as workforce reductions. And some molybdenum mines in the US closed altogether, the CMA report stated. In Colorado, Amax&apos;s Climax and Henderson molybdenum mines operated at about 50% of combined capacity. Climax employed about 200 people at the beginning of 1987, producing about 5.4 kt/d (6000 stpd) or ore. Henderson employed about 700 people, producing about 24.5 kt/d (27,000 stpd) of ore. In coal, the number of licensed coal mines in Colorado has declined from 124 in 1960 to 43 in 1986, of which only 23 were producing. Once a stable source of employment and production, the metallurgical coal industry in the state has only one surviving metallurgical coal mine, Mid-Continent&apos;s Orchard Valley mine. High production and transportation costs, weakness in the US steel industry, and a weak market position have contributed to the decline, the summary reported. A water balance model with deterministic and stochastic components was developed and used for the Gilt Edge Mine Superfund Site, South Dakota, to evaluate risks of contaminated runoff discharging to surface waters based on assumed water treatment plant (WTP) rates for different remedial alternatives. The objectives of the modeling were to use a stochastic approach for analysis of precipitation based on historic records, and for probabilistic estimation of annual and monthly runoff from primary disturbed/mining activity areas that currently requires, or will need, treatment at the WTP, water storage and changes in a major pit, and risk of contaminated water bypass of the WTP to a downstream drainage. Subareas/source areas generating contaminated runoff requiring treatment were delineated. A simple water balance model was used based on precipitation inputs and evapotranspiration and groundwater losses. Annual and monthly precipitation records for Lead, South Dakota were used to estimate precipitation at the mine site. A lognormal distribution was estimated for monthly precipitation. The stochastic software package/Excel add-in “@Risk” was used to generate random monthly precipitation values using a Monte Carlo method based on the distributions. The average annual and monthly distribution of pan and lake evaporation, and groundwater losses were also estimated for the site. Stochastic outputs from the model for the end of each month and year included contaminated runoff requiring treatment, water storage in mine pits and the risk of WTP bypass given different assumed WTP rates. The probability of the time required to dewater the pits was also modeled.
