Common clay is a natural, fine-grained material composed of hydrous aluminum silicates. Shale is a laminated sedimentary rock that is formed by the consolidation of clay, mud or silt. Production About 150 companies produced common clay and shale in 41 states. In states not reporting production, common clay and shale probably was mined and sold for construction applications by companies not participating in the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) canvass of producers. Domestic production in 2005 was estimated to be 24.8 Mt (27.3 million st) valued at $176 million. This was based on a preliminary survey of the common clay and shale industry. The leading producer states, in decreasing order by tonnage, were North Carolina, Texas, Alabama, Georgia and Ohio.

The Late Miocene San Cristobal Ag-Zn-Pb deposit represents syngenetic and epigenetic mineralization with low- and high-sulfidation characteristics. Geology is characterized by barren dacitic ring fracture domes, mineralized resurgent rhyodacite domes, strongly altered and mineralized tuffaceous lacustrine sedimentary rocks, and an extensive crystal-lithic tuff debris apron. The ore body is hosted by intra-cauldron sedimentary rocks and breccias. Fluid inclusions suggest that silver, lead, and zinc were transported as chloride complexes and precipitated by cooling in veins from <5 wt. % NaCl eq. fluids at 170°-215° C. Silver associated with resurgent rhyodacite was transported as a chloride complex and precipitated by increased H2S activity or increased fluid pH.

Chatree Gold Mine is currently the only modern day gold mine operating in Thailand, and is situated approximately equidistant from Chiang Mai in the north and Bangkok in the south. Environmental guidelines set by the Thai authorities require Chatree Gold Mine to achieve a Total Cyanide level of 20 ppm or less in the process plant discharge slurry stream prior to release into the tailings storage facility. This paper describes both the initial difficulties faced in achieving compliance on this limit utilising the conventional INCO SO2/Air cyanide destruction system and the subsequent process improvements initiated to both the leaching process and the standard INCO process to achieve the current compliance levels of approximately 99/100 shifts. Improvements were focussed on the dual aspects of reducing the formation of WAD cyanide and ferrocyanide species in the leaching circuit coupled with process changes to improve removal of the ferrocyanide species from solution during the cyanide reduction stage.

"This paper was prepared for presentation at the 16th Canadian Mineral Processor's Annual Meeting, Ottawa, Ontario, Jan. 17 to Jan. 19, 1984.This paper gives an account of the development of treatment procedures for the differential flotation of refractory copper-zinc ores. Special references are made to the effectiveness of various zinc depressants and their combinations.Studies carried out on refractory copper-zinc ores demonstrated that conventional zinc depressants such as cyanide and zinc sulphate were not particularly effective when secondary copper minerals were present in the ore; the flotation activity of sphalerite was enhanced in the presence of cyanide.Among the various zinc depressants evaluated, the following depressant combinations were found most effective: Zn(OH) 2-S02 , 802-CaO, Na2S-Na2S03-S02, Na 2 S-S02 and Na 2S-S0rDS22.The practical application of any of these systems depends on the type of ore treated and other conditions such as pH, levels and points of collector and depressant additions.In this paper the effect of each depressant combination on different ores is described with reference to the selection of collectors."

The 2002 Arizona Conference was held Dec. 8 and 9, 2002, at the Doubletree Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson. The annual conference is organized by the Arizona Conference Board of Directors, which represents SME sections in Arizona and adjacent areas. The conference provides an opportunity for individuals and corporations associated with mining in the region to get together once each year to discuss the status of the industry. The meeting featured a keynote address, a distinguished lecture and about 30 technical papers. As was the case at the 2001 meeting, the economy, the price of copper and foreign competition continue to be the hot topics of discussion among the attendees. The domestic copper industry still faces challenges due to low copper prices dictated by the world market and because of a weakened domestic economy. There continues to be concern about the Arizona region’s copper industry in light of the mergers, downsizing and shutdowns that have occurred during the past several years.

By the time a reagent is finally accepted by a mine for use on its plant it could have gone through several screening and evaluation stages. These stages may include laboratory and plant evaluation testwork. This paper outlines the steps that were followed to select, design and implement a frother for KONKOLA COPPER MINES PLC Nchanga Copper Concentrator in Zambia. It discusses initial frother screening work conducted at the Betachem metallurgical laboratory and the subsequent laboratory screening testwork conducted at Nchanga Concentrator. A modified Bikerman test method is discussed which was used to design a frother for the Nchanga flotation plant. The paper also gives an account of several plant scale trials conducted on Nchanga flotation plant and discusses the plant results, frother consumption patterns and some commercial concerns, before the product was finally accepted by the mine.

"To enable the prediction of reagents suitable for fine coal flotation, it is necessary to develop a methodology applicable to different South African coal types. Statistical confirmation of the applicability of this methodology is important to avoid recommendation of reagents on a trial and error basis.The study included 5 coal samples from different collieries and included Highveld seam 3 and 4 coal (as one sample), Waterberg coal (zone 10 -11), Highveld seam 5 upper coal and Witbank seam 2 and seam 4 coal. Seam 3 and 4 (mixture) coal, Waterberg and the seam 5 upper coal were all found to be vitrinite rich coals. The coal characterisation study included petrographic analysis, proximate analysis, float-sink analysis, oxygen-containing functional groups, surface extraction, flotation release analysis and contact angle measurements. Flotation tests were used to validate expectations from the characterisation of the coal samples.RESULTSThe flotation data indicated that all of the coal samples were amendable to froth flotation. The best results were obtained with the Witbank seam 2 coal and the poorest flotation with Syferfontein seam 5 coal. The flotation tests showed that the best reagents to float all of the coal samples studied were iso-decanol and dodecene. These reagents produced flotation products that were near to the release curve, which are the optimum flotation results (obtained when using iso-paraffin as collector). Dodecene resulted in low ash products and iso-decanol in high yield products."

"Abrasive wear and corrosive wear of carbon-steel grinding balls occurred simultaneously during the wet-grinding of hematite iron ore, and Ni-Cu sulphide ore, in laboratory ball mills. Two corrosion control methods, the use of corrosion inhibitors and pH control, were investigated and found to be effective means of reducing or preventing corrosive wear. Up to 50 % reduction of total ball wear resulted from the use of these methods.Corrosive wear is caused principally by the reaction of oxygen in air with the carbon-steel grinding balls, probably by the following reaction: 2Fe + O2 + 2H20 - 2Fe2 + 40H-.IntroductionA survey of corrosion problems in Canadian sulphide ore mines was completed and the findings were published in 197l(l). The corrosion survey was used to develop the present research program with the objective to find more economical and effective ways and means to reduce the corrosion that occurs in the mining and metallurgical industry. The purpose of this presentation is to review the projects being done by staff members of the Corrosion Section, Extraction Metallurgy Division, on corrosive wear and its control in wet-grind ball mills.Both abrasion and corrosion contribute to metal consumption during wet grinding of ores. The total wear of grinding media in this study is assumed to be equal to the sum of corrosive wear and abrasive wear. A great deal of research and development has been reported in the literature on ways to improve the abrasion resistance of grinding media but only a small number of studies has been reported on the corrosion resistance of conventional grinding media."

The assembly procedures for nine different wire rope terminations used in the mining industry are presented in a format and manner to facilitate training and to provide points where inspection of the termination should be performed. The nine terminations addressed are: Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve & Thimble, Flemish Loop with Steel Sleeve, Wedge Socket, Swaged Socket, Turn Back Loop with Sleeve & Thimble, Thimble Splice with Four Tucks, U-Bolt Clip & Thimble, Zinc Poured Socket, and Epoxy Resin Poured Socket. The manual was prepared to be used primarily for field type mining operations or training where high capacity machinery is quite limited. It is nut the intent of this manual to suggest that the procedures presented are those to be used by manufacturers or other commercial enterprizes. A different set of procedures may be more appropriate where ideal space and equipment resources are available. The assembly procedures were derived from standard industrial practice, manufacturer&apos;s recommendations, and the open literature on the subject. These same procedures were used to prapare test specimens for an extensive series of pull and axial fatigue tests. The results of these tests indicate that these procedures are satisfactory in all respects. This manual is to be used as part of a complete training program. Although a brief glossary is included, there has been no attempt to make this a primer on wire rope. The selection of wire rope termination hardware, like the selection of the wire rope, is a subject not covered by this manual. The reader is cautioned that there are various sources for such hardware and this selection must be done carefully.

China’s vibrant economic growth is built on coal, the source of two thirds of the country’s electricity. Over 95 percent of China’s coal is mined underground with the average mining depth at 410 m and in-creasing at 10 m per year; today, the deepest Chinese coal mines have exceeded 1,000 m. With increasing mining depths, there are greater challenges including increased methane emissions and spontaneous combustion. According to the government, nearly half of China’s coal mines are classified as gassy (with specific gas content at least 10 m3/mt). Coalbed methane (CBM) is a clean energy source. However, only a small percentage of the methane is captured, and the rest is vented directly to the atmosphere. This paper describes China’s CBM resource, its production and utilization.

"Stereolithography is a well-known rapid prototyping technique in the manufacturing sector. Essentially, it is a three-dimensional printing process that produces plastic prototype parts from standard CAD files. At present, Canadian mining companies are not fully aware of the potential of rapid prototyping techniques (RPTs) for their production and mine design systems. Mining engineers and geologists attempt to visualize and understand the characteristics and layouts of orebodies on computer models, and in cases where it is decided to develop physical models, the process is time-consuming, based on simplified constructions. RPTs, such as stereolithography, can facilitate engineers and geologists to quickly, and with satisfactory accuracy, visualize sections of orebodies and evaluate alternative ore extraction techniques using 3D solid models.The research discussed in this paper is carried out by the Laurentian University Mining Automation Laboratory (LUMAL) in collaboration with Inco Limited and the Integrated Manufacturing Technologies Institute (IMTI) of the National Research Council of Canada. The main objective with this research is to evaluate the applicability of state-of-the-art RPTs to underground hard rock mining systems. RPTs can play a significant role in accelerating the design and development process of mining systems."

There are few data on the composition of discard coal in South Africa, and no overall view of the discards for the entire industry. As a result of work on coal qualities in South Africa, a database was established which enabled a good estimate to be made of the composition of the discard from every mine. The data are presented in the form of histograms of ash, volatile matter and fixed carbon content of the 43 million tons of material which were discarded in 1990. The results are discussed in terms of the closeness of the composition of much of the discard material to presently used power station coal. It is concluded that it is mainly developments in equipment, particularly fluidized bed boilers, which inhibit the wider use of discard coal. However, other factors must be noted, including the relatively high sulphur content of the discards, and the fact that even with the most careful storage the material ages and may become unusable after about 15 years.

The planning, design and operation of mines must include the development of positive environmental, community and land-use benefits if it is to achieve good corporate social responsibility and minimise detrimental impacts throughout the life of the mine. Life-of-mine (LOM) planning should, therefore, consider conducting mining activities in the best socially, environmentally and economically acceptable manner, from the commencement of exploration to post-closure of the mine. Current knowledge of LOM activities in relation to public health (life-of-community, or LOC) impacts neither fully captures the full suite of human health and well-being impacts, nor comprehensively informs society on these issues. This knowledge gap is becoming more apparent as public antipathy is increasing towards mining activities within Australia, Canada and globally. The purpose of this paper is to present preliminary and informative results of a literature review to gain insight into the extent of available public health and well-being knowledge associated with mining development. LOM development must also benefit the LOC, in that it must aim to minimise detrimental impacts, and maximise beneficial (including health) impacts on all associated communities. Health planning and programing for mitigation of potential adverse health impacts of mining should extend beyond the scope of work-related injury and illness (resulting from chronic exposure to harmful substances, infectious and lifestyle illnesses), to the health and well-being of workersÆ families and extended associated communities. By mapping the available but rather scarce literature on LOC areas to recognised LOM stages, this review found shortcomings and imbalances regarding research reporting on mining and its health-related impacts in the worker-to-community continuum.CITATION:Kirsch, P, Viswanathan, D, LaBouchardiere, R, Shandro, J and Jagals, P, 2012. "An enhanced gravity concentrator was installed in conjunction with an Intensive Leach Reactor at the Sadiola plant in Mali last year and commissioned in Dec 2007.There has been much debate over the years as to the effect of gravity concentration on overall plant performance. The late Dr Laplante suggested that for every 10% of gold recovered by gravity, there was a corresponding 0.1% to 1% additional overall plant recovery. The results at Sadiola are consistent with this hypothesis with an overall 4% gain in plant recovery.With total gold recovery of 12% in the gravity section, grades are increased from 3.54g/t in the gravity feed to an average of 2 600g/t in the concentrator feed to the in-line reactor. The recovery of gold in the in-line reactor is in excess of 98.5%.This paper discusses the background to the project, the laboratory testwork prior to the equipment selection, the operational results of the system, as well as the benefits of the future application of high mass yield centrifugal concentrators in base metals, sulphides and industrial minerals. Bench scale, pilot scale and plant practice examples are also presented.INTRODUCTIONBesides picking nuggets off the ground or out of riverbeds, gravity concentration is arguably one of the oldest methods of recovering gold. In circa 6000BC people discovered that gold can be found behind the rocks and in depressions of creek beds. By placing rocks in a stretch of channel with the proper slope the first sluice is built, probably around 4,000 BC, and this method is still practiced today."

The aim of the present work is to investigate the effects of shooting multiple explosive charges, in the same borehole, on the amplitude and frequency content of the generated seismic wave. The work also investigates the effect of the coupling medium used in the borehole on the quality of the generated seismic wave. The delay period between the shots is on the order of months and up to a year. The investigation utilizes a numerical modeling approach which is capable of modeling the detonation of explosives as well as shock and stress wave propagation in solids.

CRITICAL analyses of the work expended in producing oil by the utilization of gas energy have appeared in the publications of Shaw,1 Pierce and Lewis,2 and Herold,3 authors who have ably discussed the factors which must be taken into consideration in comparing energy consumed per barrel in various wells which are flowed by means of gas-lift. However, two distinct phases of oil production are concerned with the ratio of gas energy consumed to oil produced. One of these phases is the gas-lift, which utilizes the differential gas pressures for the purpose of flowing oil, whether these pressures be natural reservoir pressures or be induced by artificial compression of gas or air. The other phase has to do with prorating oil production in pools which are operated either as units, or are subject to such restrictions as those imposed at Oklahoma City by the Corporation Commission, or, by similar controlling groups in other fields. An abundance of literature is available relative to the problems of flowing wells by gas-lift, but the first suggestion that the energy of the gas within the oil and gas pool might serve as a basis for proration, appeared in the timely article by McWilliams.4 Much of the. dissatisfaction with proration in certain fields is because some operators feel that besides the hazard to the wells which accompanies the test, the method of allocating production on the basis of the "potential" gage is inequitable and gives some operators a distinct advantage over others.5 The most severe penalty may be exacted from the most progressive operators or those who attempt to produce their oil with a minimum quantity of reservoir gas. In This Chapter [Drill dust control: wet and dry Enclosed cabs on drills and mobile equipment Haul road dust control] Overburden drilling generates most of the respirable dust that affects workers at surface mines. Both wet and dry methods are available to reduce this drill dust. Overburden removal by mobile excavation equipment such as bulldozers, front-end loaders, and haulage trucks can be dusty, particularly under dry and windy conditions. Tightly enclosed cabs with dust filtration systems can substantially lower the dust exposure of both drill and mobile equipment operators. Haul road dust control can be achieved by water application or chemical application. DRILL DUST CONTROL [Drill dust is controlled with wet or dry systems. Wet systems can be more efficient, but may freeze in the winter. Dry systems require careful maintenance of the drill deck shroud. An improved deck shroud is shown.] Wet Suppression. Wet drilling systems pump water into the bailing air from a water tank mounted on the drill. The water droplets in the bailing air trap dust particles as they travel up the annular space of the drilled hole, thus controlling dust as the air bails the cuttings from the hole [Page 1991]. In wet drilling systems, typical water flow rates are 0.1 to 2.0 gpm depending on the size and type of drill and the moisture level of the overburden. The drill operator controls the flow using a control valve located in the cab. Some drills are equipped with a flow meter to give the opera-tor a visual sign of the flow rate. Raising the water flow will improve dust capture, but too much water causes operational problems. Because of this, the drill operator must exercise care in find-ing the best water flow rate.
