What is special about being a female mine manager? We do not believe that the challenge is greater for women in managing a mine compared to managerial positions in other male-dominated businesses. The challenge lies in the fact that it is a male-dominated business. Being a leader belonging to a minority creates a situation where competence not only lies in having technical knowledge or general leadership characteristics, but also in acquiring an understanding of the male norm and being able to behave and communicate effectively in the organisation.In order to move towards a better gender balance at senior levels it is important to set measurable objectives on desirable proportions between women and men at management levels within the company. Focus and action are required to achieve this goal. At LKAB, the current target is to reach 25 per cent women in the total workforce by 2020. To date, LKAB has reached 19.4 per cent women in the total workforce, and the number of women in management positions is 19.9 per cent.It is of vital importance to create a non-discriminating working environment to achieve equal opportunities at the workplace, to be able to use the whole workforce as a resource for recruitment of professionals and managers, thereby improving decision-making, productivity, efficiency and profitability.Women as mine managers is not a utopia, but rather an effect of long-term investments in actions that result in equal opportunities for all employees.CITATION:Quinteiro, M and Sundqvist, Å, 2016. "This paper on coarse particle recovery (CPR) summarizes a process to capture coarse particles that are not recoverable by regular flotation. Several porphyry copper operations in the world operate analogous circuits that recover non-floated copper from tailings; however, the case presented here is unique in that extensive underlying test work has allowed us to elucidate some fundamental principles behind recovery enhancement. This paper discusses an overview of the flow sheet that is proposed to Minera Escondida Ltda., the nature of copper in the feed to the CPR circuit, and the various unit operations within the recovery circuit. Details of the technology behind each unit operation will be presented in later publications.INTRODUCTIONSince 1996 BHPBilliton and MEL (Minera Escondida Ltda.) have developed a process to recover copper from coarse particles in the rougher tailings. Copper recovery from fresh tailings is not new. Several operations in Chile, such as Chuquicamata, El Teniente (AMEC, 2003), Mantos Blancos and others have operated various forms of tailings circuits. Both Chuquicamata and El Teniente practice cascade flotation scalping off froth containing fine copper particles after allowing sufficient retention time, air inducement and, sometimes, additional reagent addition. Chuquicamata tailings are not segregated but floated in sequential cascade and conventional large cell arrangements. At the Valle Central operation of El Teniente a coarse fraction of mill tailings is ground and floated, with the rejects recombined with fine tailings and subjected to cascade flotation through a sequence of concrete launders as the tailings flow towards their final deposition area. Mantos Blancos cyclone the rougher tailings and blend the underflow with scavenger concentrate from elsewhere in the principal circuit prior to flotation in Wemco Cells. Kemess in BC, Canada operates a 160 m3 Outokumpu cell to reduce the tailings sulfur content (Rasmussen, et.al, 2004)."

MFIRE is a computer simulation program that performs normal ventilation network planning calculations, and dynamic transient state simulation of ventilation networks under a variety of conditions. The program is useful for the analysis of ventilation networks under thermal and mechanical influence. MFIRE simulates a mine's ventilation system and its response to altered ventilation parameters, external influences such as temperatures, and internal influences such as fires. Extensive output enables detailed quantitative analysis of the effects of the proposed alteration to the ventilation system Network simulation using digital computers has become widespread throughout the mining industry in recent years. However, as the sophistication of the simulator increases (MFIRE, for example), the complexity of input data requirements and interpretations of results requires more skill and knowledge from the users. Perhaps the most difficult part of using MFIRE is to construct the data set describing the mine's physical layout and its ventilation properties. The initial attempts to get the data set running often reveal unknown or ignored aspects of the mine's ventilation.

In rock cutting mechanics, the effects of the rock and coal brittleness on the efficiency of cutting bits are examined by many researchers. There is no universally accepted brittleness concept as a measure of cutting efficiency. The effect of the brittleness on rock cutting has not been completely explained. The aim of this study is to correlate the relationships between Specific Energy (SE) and brittleness concepts. The applicability of various brittleness measurement methods for rock cutting efficiency has been investigated. In this study, the raw data derived from previous experimental studies were used, and the relationships between SE and brittleness concepts were investigated. The two previously used brittleness concepts, which are named as B1 (the ratio of compressive strength to tensile strength) and B2 (the ratio of compressive strength minus tensile strength to compressive strength plus tensile strength), and a new introduced brittleness concept named B3 (the area under line in relation to compressive strength and tensile strength) were evaluated in this study. The relations among these brittleness concepts for rock cutting efficiency were established using regression analysis. There is no correlation found between the SE values and the brittleness of B1and B2values. But, the SE is strongly correlated with the brittleness of B3. It was seen that the suggested brittleness of B3concept could be used as an indicator in rock cutting efficiency analysis.

"INTRODUCTION The metallurgical research program of the Bureau of Mines has been somewhat disorganized, but generally advanced by the increased activities of the war period. The present report is for the purpose of summarizing the work of the Bureau in this field for the past 15 years and indicating its future plan.Fifteen years ago the Bureau turned from its pioneer work on the physical chemistry of steelmaking to an emphasis on raking a pure steel synthetically, rather than by refining, that is, :producing each of the steel 'constituents in the pure state and combining them by simple melting. Such a procedure permits the use of less high-grade ores, not only of iron, but of the ferroalloy metals, such as manganese and chromium,This program has led to extensive work on iron-ore concentration, agglomeration, reducibility of ores and agglomerates, direct reduction of iron ores and concentrates by a wide variety of processes; special refining processes for iron, the production of pure mangenese, chromium, and cobalt from low-grade ores by electrolytic processes, the production of ferrochromium, ferronickel, and ferronickel-cobalt from low-grade domestic ores, and the development of many special alloys to effectively use the new products.The status of the work in each of these fields and the future program of work, together with a bibliography of papers and patents by the Bureau staff on each of these subjects, are given."

Hydrothermal brines are extracted from significant depths below the surface of the earth and arrive at the surface at elevated pressure and temperature. The exact chemistry and conditions of these brines depends upon the rock formations through which the water travels, but many of the brines are rich in dissolved minerals especially silica which is often saturated in the brine. At pressure and temperature the minerals remain in solution but in order to extract heat from the brines, they need to be cooled and during which many of the minerals precipitate causing problems. Where precipitation is a problem in the downstream processing, the brines are maintained at a high enough temperature and pressure so as to avoid precipitation and injected back into the geothermal formation. This results in a significant loss in potential energy that could be recovered from the geothermal brines. If left to precipitate in an uncontrolled manner, many of the minerals will precipitate as gels, in a high surface area form which is difficult to extract from the liquor and which can causes problems. Precipitation in this manner often builds up on the inside of pipes, reducing the pipe cross-section available for fluid flow and reducing the overall efficiency of the plant. If the brines are seeded at the appropriate time or the precipitation conditions are changed, mineral particles can be grown and separated more easily from the brine. During this precipitation and growth phase the chemistry of the local environment can also be altered to grow more valuable particulates. Some of the specific chemistries will be discussed with reference to known geothermal brines and what needs to be done to precipitate value added products. A theoretical approach to the complete extraction of minerals from geothermal brines is also discussed with the goal of extracting more heat from the brine prior to reinjection into the well.

The Peñasquito deposit in Mexico is one of the largest grassroots precious metal discoveries developed in recent years. Goldcorp Inc. acquired the gold-silver-lead-zinc property with the acquisition of Glamis in 2006. The Peñasquito property is located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas state, Mexico. The elevation of the property averages 1,900 m (6,200 ft) above sea level. It is situated in a wide east-west valley. Minera Peñasquito, S.A. de C.V., wholly owned subsidiary of Goldcorp Inc. has operated twin SABC-flotation lines since June 2010. Each line is capable of processing 50,000 tonne per day using a SABC grinding circuit followed by flotation to produce lead and zinc concentrates. The addition of a Polysius Polycom HPGR 2417 with dual 3,000 kW drives to reduce the crushed pebbles produced by the SAG mills was planned to increase production to 65,000 tonne per day per line. The production has been limited to 100,000 tpd due to operating issues in the grinding circuit. The operating issue has been the amount of pebbles generated by the SAG mills is significantly less than originally planned. This paper describes the planned installation of a crushed augmented feed to maximize utilization of the HPGR capacity. This coupled with full utilization of the SAG and Ball Mill available energies there is the potential to achieve a 50% total capacity increase from the grinding circuit.

"CVRD’s Department of Development and Technology – GETEK has been developing and perfecting a general methodology for scaling up flotation and grinding circuits over several years. This methodology has been applied in several prospective CVRD mining projects. It encompasses a procedure for variability analysis based on bench scale tests, pilot scale grinding and flotation tests and modeling and simulation for scaling up the industrial flowsheet.The bench scale tests include the determination of the Work Index, simplified DWT tests, rougher flotation and locked-cycle tests with samples that are representative of the ore body variability. After completion of these studies, continuous, pilot-scale flotation tests are carried out at a Mini Pilot Plant with drill core samples representative of different stages of the mine life. Finally, studies are carried out with large volume samples using a conventional grinding and flotation pilot plant. This sample is also used for liberation characterization, grinding kinetics, flotation kinetics and industrial circuit scale up. This methodology has been successfully employed in the development of CVRD’s new mining projectINTRODUCTIONCVRD has been developing and perfecting a general methodology for scaling up flotation and grinding circuits over several years. The definition of the processing route and the sizing and scale up of the processing system are some of the products generated during the pre-feasibility of a greenfield project. This paper is focused on the scale up of grinding and flotation circuits, operations known to be of the most importance in a mineral processing plant.The methodology for the definition of the flotation and grinding circuits is divided in the following stages: bench scale ore variability studies, pilot plant operation and modeling followed by simulation. The product of this work is a calibrated simulator that can be utilized for plant operation as well as mine planning, looking to achieve optimal operational conditions.The current models used for scale up of the grinding circuits are aimed at the generating information about the size distribution of the circuit product. However, it is well known that the liberation state of these products may be of critical importance for the performance of the concentration processes downstream. Nevertheless, CVRD has been developing a methodology for liberation kinetics during grinding, aimed at optimizing grinding circuit throughput together with downstream flotation recovery."

This publication has been prepared to supply manufacturers and industrial users a listing of mobile diesel-powered equipment and subassemblies approved and certified by the Bureau of Mines for use in nongassy noncoal mines and tunnels. This revised and supplemented listing supersedes an earlier publication2 released in 1963. Testing of diesel-powered equipment is one phase of the Bureau's program of health and safety that concerns approval of electrical and diesel equipment designed to prevent explosions, fires, shocks, or toxic hazards in underground mines, when such equipment is used and maintained properly. Manufacturers submit machinery and component parts to the Bureau for study of their design, safety features, and use. Equipment must pass exacting tests and must meet strict requirements established through research and experience and outlined in the Bureau's permissible schedules before the Bureau approves it for safe use in mines.

In order to increase productivity and decrease reducing agent rate (RAR) of blast furnaces, slag content of sinter ore must be decreased. However, gangue content in iron ore tends to increase because of resource depletion. Therefore, amount of high-grade concentrate in sinter ore feeds should be increased, but this situation causes a decrease in permeability of the sintering bed so that the productivity of sinter process decreases. In order to increase the amount of concentrate, NSSMS has developed the P-type separate granulation method, RF-MEBIOS and SPEx II technologies. These technologies have been introduced to actual sintering machines. In this report, a new technology using microparticles of iron ore is proposed to increase the amount of concentrate in sinter blends. Basic experiments simulating the sinter making process using microparticles of iron ore were undertaken. Crushed pisolite, containing >60 wt per cent -10 µm was prepared for binder. The pisolite microparticle binder was mixed with another Australian sinter feed ore in a high-speed agitating mixer. They were mixed for about one minute, and then granulated using a pan pelletiser. After that, they were added to another raw material mixed by a drum mixer, and then charged in a pot for a sinter pot test. As a result, when the amount of concentrate increased from 13 wt per cent to 20 wt per cent, productivity was almost kept constant using pisolite microparticle binder.CITATION:Kamijo, C, Yamaguchi, Y, Matsumura, M, Kawaguchi, T and Nomura, S, 2017. "The smoke nuisance, like many other undesirable and longstanding features in our present civilization, is still with us. On reviewing the situation we are astonished to find no authentic record of a major smoke-abatement campaign that has succeeded in eliminating a smoke nuisance, in spite of the fact that the problem has been with us since the use of bituminous coal began. We might well ask ourselves where the trouble lies; is the problem impossible of solution? We can not blame the average citizen for harboring this thought as a conviction. He has been urged for so long but sees so little evidence of progress. He has repeatedly been assured by the scientist and the engineer in most convincing terms that smoke. is unnecessary, that it can be avoided; small wonder is it that he is beginning to distrust so-called authority on the subject.On the other hand, the scientist and engineer are entirely within their rights. We all know that even high-volatile coal can be and is now being burned with no visible smoke. We know that even small domestic heating furnaces, with favorable conditions and with proper care, can be fired by hand without producing much smoke. And we know that when such equipment is fitted with suitable stoking devices, little or no smoke results. What, then, is the answer?Perhaps we may learn something from a critical examination of a typical smoke-abatement problem. Probably one of the most enlightening campaigns that has been waged in the United States is that of Salt Lake City, Utah; therefore, the purpose of this paper is to discuss the important aspects of this particular case."

Dharwar craton in the southern Indian shield, comprises the Neoarchaean foreland in the west and a relatively younger accretionary complex composed of granitoids and intervening gold-bearing volcano-sedimentary belts. The Hutti schist belt hosting a major gold producing mine is situated in the northern part of the eastern Dharwar craton. It is a horse-shoe shaped structure comprising predominantly of pillowed metabasalt of tholeiitic composition with minor amounts of clastic sediments and felsic volcanic rocks. The belt is intruded on all sides by circular to tabular bodies of granites and granodiorite. Important gold deposits are located at Hutti, Hira-Buddini and Uti villages. Felsic volcanics in the Hutti belt occur as tabular bodies of quartz porphyry and breccia. Two of the gold-bearing reefs in the Hutti mine, Viz., Middle and Strike reefs are intimately associated with tabular sub-vertical sheets of mylonitic quartz-feldspar porphyry intruding pillowed metrabasalt. In Uti mine area, the felsic volcanics occurs as a tabular body. At Hira-Buddini, the felsic volcanic occur as a irregularly shaped sheet in pillowed metabasalt. Mineralogical and geochemical studies suggest that the felsic volcanic rock in Hutti mine area is a rhyolite and at Uti and Hira-Buddhini it is of dacite composition. Scheelite occurs as veins, veinlets, stringers and blebs along fracture planes of felsic volcanics in the Hutti mine area, whereas at Uti and Hira-Buddini it is insignificant. On the basis of spatial association of metabasalt and felsic volcanics and on geochemical grounds, we interpret that the felsic volcanics might have originated by the partial melting of basalt. REE patterns of the granite, granodiorite and metabasalt of Hutti are similar to each other indicating that they could be co-magmatic. However, REE in the Hutti felsic rocks is significantly higher than in Uti and particularly Hira-Buddini mine areas. The two felsic volcanic samples drawn away from the mineralized zone from all the three mine areas were analyzed for tungsten. In Hutti one sample assayed 0.15% and another 0.062%. At Uti, in one sample it assayed 0.056% and another less than 1 ppm, whereas at Hira-Buddini, it is less than 1 ppm in both the samples. The spatially associated basalt analyzed 23 to 235 ppm tungsten, whereas granites and granodiorites have very low (<1 ppm) tungsten. Therefore, the source of tungsten in the felsic volcanics of Hutti area could be traced to metabasalt. The absence of significant amount of tungsten in the felsic volcanic of Hira-Buddini could be attributed to the lack of REE enrichment compared to REE in Hutti and Uti felsic volcanics.

"Scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM–EDX), and Time of flight secondary ion mass spectroscopy (TOF-SIMS)were used to analyze pyrochlore grains from Niobec froth flotation plant. Samples from the mill feed, pyrochlore rougher feed, pyrochlore rougher concentrate, and tail were analyzed in order to identify a potential relationship between pyrochlore matrix composition and selective separation. SEM-EDX analyses indicate that pyrochlore grains with high Fe content appear to be less recoverable than those with a lower Fe content and that the flotation response is related to matrix Fe rather than Fe occurring as inclusions. TOF-SIMS was used to analyse the surface of high Fe and low Fe pyrochlore, in order to identify a potential relationship between pyrochlore matrix composition and the related effect on cationic collector adsorption (tallow diamine). Surface analyses of pyrochlore from a conditioning test show that species indicative of the collector favour the surface of Fe poor pyrochlore relative to the Fe rich variety. The results from the conditioning test illustrate a negative relationship between collector loading and the presence of Fe and related oxidation species. This study identifies the link between pyrochlore matrix Fe content and, the presence of surface oxidation products, to collector loading. Poor Fe rich pyrochlore recovery noted in the Niobec froth flotation plant may be partially explained by this mechanism.INTRODUCTIONPyrochlore, the most abundant niobium containing mineral (Perrault and Manker, 1981) is economically recovered in Brazil, China, and Canada (Niobec) (Kouptsidis et al., 2008). Since 1974 Niobec has been extracting niobium from the St-Honorécarbonatite deposit. Niobec is the only operating Nb extraction facility in North American and one of the three major world producers of ferroniobium (Dufresne and Goyette, 2004; Belzile, 2009).Flotation is the preferred and most cost-effective method for pyrochlore recovery (Burks, 1958; Shapolov and Polkin, 1958; Zakharov et al., 1967; Razvozzhaev and Nikiforov, 1972; Bogdanov et al., 1973; Abeidu, 1974; Raby and Desrochers, 1975; Wilson, 1979; Biss and Nadeau, 1982; Biss, 1985). With the aim of optimising the flotation process for the Niobec ore, numerous experiments were performed on the influence of surfactants and type of water to optimise pyrochlore recovery and grade during flotation (Gomez et al., 1987; Rao et al., 1988; Dufresne and Goyette, 2004; Belzile, 2009)."

"The results of Mr. Klymowsky's research confirm the essential role played by oxidation products in the flotation of base metal sulphides. They invite a discussion on the subject of aeration which I may open by a brief description of the development and current practice of aeration. The first installation of pre-flotation aeration in Canadian milling practice was undertaken during the years 1928 and 29 at the then new Noranda Mill. C.G. McLachlan and his collaborators demonstrated that the flotation differential between chalcopyrite and iron sulphides was enhanced by aeration in soda ash alkaline pulps. The ores treated contained more than 80 per cent sulphides. It was proposed already then that the products of mineral oxidation assisted copper and retarded iron sulphides, at least pyrrhotite flotation. The concentration of thiosulphates was used as a measure of the progress of oxidation. Several papers by C.G. McLachlan elaborate on this subject.The aerator was also used as classifier since it was held that aeration, i.e. controlled oxidation, should go hand in hand with creation of new mineral surfaces. Grinding mills and aerators were placed in closed circuit. Figure 1. This aeration was essential for successful separation at Noranda.Following the application of aeration at Noranda the technique was applied to existing mills in N.W. Quebec. Impressive improvements in concentrate grades and recoveries were obtained. It was observedthat the zinc flotation benefitted from aeration as much as the preceding copper float. In the late forties and fifties the aerator classifier was installed in new mills associated with the Noranda group. A diagrammatic sketch of the Quemont flow-sheet (figure 2) may serve as a typical example."

In 2001, 14,623 mining operations reported employment statistics to the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). This was an increase of 210 mining operations compared to 2000. Almost half (49%) were sand and gravel mines, followed by stone (29%), coal (15%), nonmetal mines (5%), and metal mines (2%).
