The past 10 years has seen use of computers become widespread in the mining/exploration industry (including coal, precious and base metals, oil/gas and industrial minerals). This paper will concentrate on the use of computers as a tool to provide technical solutions (including data management, mine planning and operational support) to this industry rather than the use of computers to aid accounting, maintenance and inventory (æcommercialÆ) applications. This paper will review the processes and benefits of the use of computers in mining. We then review the use of technical computing locally here in New Zealand and see what business benefits local users have found from using computers in mining. We have, in research for this paper, spoken with mining software vendors from around the world to find out what is currently the æbest practiceÆ in the industry. The paper will then list what those vendors see as the ultimate improvement on the cards for the future of mining software.

La unidad de producción polimetálica de Yauliyacu, ubicada en la localidad de Casapalca, Lima, tiene una presa de relaves en el paraje de Chinchan del mismo departamento. Sin embargo, dado que la presa nueva Yauliyacu culminaría su función y que la presa auxiliar Tablachaca no contaba con la suficiente capacidad de almacenaje, Centromin Perú evalúo otras alternativas para la ubicación y construcción de una nueva. De acuerdo al estudio realizado, se encontró que la quebrada de Chinchan era la más adecuada puesto que ofrecía mayor capacidad de producción y se descartó las de Corina y Tablachaca. En este sentido, el presente texto describe las características de la quebrada, el diseño del depósito de Chinchan, su proceso de construcción, la limpieza de fundación, el análisis de la estabilidad física y química, la implementación para mejorar la estabilidad de la presa, la mejora de calidad del aire en la zona del depósito, el programa de inversiones y el plan de cierre del relave.

The effect of liner wear on SAG mill performance has gained much attention in recent years. It is commonly observed that the three key performance criteria of SAG milling; throughput, power and product size all improve as the liner wears.The increase in throughput is generally ascribed to the increase in the grate apertures and the increase in mill volume due to the wear of these components. Whilst the decrease in product size is attributed to the reduction in lifter height and angle, resulting in more breakage by means of attrition and abrasion.Though it is widely acknowledged that the wearing of liner components such as Lifters, Plates and Grates have a significant impact on mill performance, their individual contribution to changes in mill performance has been unclear, and resultantly lead to questions like; what percentage of the throughput increase can be attributed to the increase in mill volume (plate wear)? and how much can be attributed to the increase in grate aperture (grate wear)?It has been found that through the use of grinding surveys, analysis of production data and JKSimMet it was possible to separate the effects of changing liner profile, increasing mill diameter and increasing grate aperture on the mill performance allowing for the quantification of each.The outlined methodology allows for both troubleshooting of problem liner components which reduce milling efficiency in their wear life as well as providing a basis for a more quantitative approach to liner design and reline scheduling.CITATION:Toor, P, Powell, M, Hilden, M and Weerasekara, N, 2015. During the past two years the Underground Mine Ventilation Group at PT Freeport Indonesia has undertaken to upgrade their Hygiene Laboratory. This process has included upgrading equipment for dust sampling and gas monitoring, as well as procurement of an OCEC analyzer for Diesel Particulate Matter analysis. While the laboratory equipment represents one factor, these changes have also required re-evaluation of the sampling protocols and the burden of ventilation monitoring personnel. This paper provides a review of these experiences.

There are a number of factors that contribute to the profitability of a mine and its associated concentrator. Chief among these is the time taken from the first hoist of material from underground to the first batch of concentrate shipped. The main aim of this project was to integrate the mining model with a concentrator production schedule to minimize the time it would take to produce concentrate (without the concentrator having to stop because of a lack of feed material) in the most capital-effective manner. A secondary goal was to ensure detailed stockpiling requirements, as the concentrator is in an area where 'visual pollution' is to be avoided. To achieve these two goals a dynamic stockpile model was created by utilizing the mine production schedule and breaking it down to a daily production figure. Four different concentrator development models were then proposed. The difference between the mine production and concentrator consumption was integrated over the life of the mine to provide the accumulated stockpile tonnages for both Merensky and UG2 ore. To prevent a situation where the concentrator was operational without any feed, the stockpile levels were never allowed to fall below zero. When a development option was selected, the standard metallurgical performance calculations were used to derive a concentrate production schedule, which was used as a basis for commercial negotiations for the sale of concentrate.

It has been shown that metallic tungsten powder can be obtained by electrochemical reduction of solid CaWO4 in molten CaCl2-NaCl eutectic mixture at 600oC. In this study, constant and pulse voltage electrolysis experiments were performed to optimize reduction kinetics and obtain information about the mechanism of above process. It was found that pulse voltage applications yield faster reduction rates when average voltage of pulse voltage application was the same as constant voltage application. In addition, analysis of the current vs. time graphs of constant and pulse voltage electrolysis studies showed that reduction occurs at potential differences higher than about 2.2 V between CaWO4 cathode and graphite rod anode.

The influence of microwave treatment on copper flotation has been investigated. Comparative batch flotation tests carried out on ore treated at 5?12 kW for 0.1?0.5 s showed that improvements in copper recovery of between 6?15 % could be achieved compared with untreated ore. Both recovery and cumulative grade increased with increasing treatment time and power. A preliminary economic analysis showed that microwave treatment will be economically viable if recoveries similar to those determined on laboratory scale can be achieved on a plant. Diesel fuel fire experiments were conducted in NIOSH’s Pittsburgh Research Laboratory’s (PRL) Safety Research Coal Mine (SRCM) to determine the critical air velocity for preventing smoke rollback. Such information is necessary for the preplanning and implementation of ventilation changes during mine fire fighting and rescue operations. The fire intensity varied from 50 kW to 300 kW depending upon the fuel tray area. Airflow in the 2 m high and 2.9 m wide coal mine entry was regulated during the course of each experiment; measured upwind from the fire as an average over the entry cross-section with an ultrasonic airflow sensor; and recorded dynamically with a mine monitoring system. The extent of smoke reversal was monitored with light obscuration monitors, ionization smoke sensors, and visual observations. Experimental results for the critical air velocity for smoke reversal as a function of fire intensity compared very well with model predictions based upon a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) fire dynamics simulator.

Ground behaviour in the vicinity of a roadway has been investigated using a physical model and in situ tests during a roof fall. It was discovered that behaviour of the ground is governed by irreversible displacements of adjacent rock clusters. The cluster is a short-living sector of a rock mass that moves as a solid body. For the lack of degree of freedom, the rock mass must be divided into clusters that are forced to move one after another in space and in time. These clusters permanently rearrange and reform during irreversible (inelastic) ground deformation. The crowded clusters have to yield to each other and alter their velocity and direction of movement to accommodate their motion into the excavation. Such behaviour involves uneven and irregular vertical deflection and the movement of adjacent rock blocks in the roof, sides and floor of an opening. Such movement destroys the symmetry of horizontal displacements with respect to the centre line of the opening. A set of indicators that a roof fall is imminent has been identified. Horizontal displacements and dilation must be controlled in order to maintain the stability of an underground opening. Such a state retains the self-supporting effect of the roof and contributes to rock bolts bearing capacity.

Mining equipment and processing plants have become more efficient, mostly due to technological advances. The mining industry is now in a boom period, one that some analysts believe can sustain itself. But even with higher commodity prices, sky-rocketing energy costs and the costs associated with environmental and reclamation regulations have not allowed all mines to reach their full profitability potential.

Every year, severe injuries and fatalities occur when a miner is struck or pinned by a continuous mining machine, shuttle car, scoop or other piece of mobile mining equipment. Proximity detection systems offer a means to prevent these types of injuries and fatalities by sensing the presence of a miner and disabling machine motion. Although hundreds of these systems are installed and in use in operating coal mines, the influence that coal has on the electromagnetic fields associated with these systems has never been rigorously quantified. NIOSH researchers have conducted tests to measure whether the proximity of coal has a significant influence on a popular design of proximity detection system. The system tested utilizes a low frequency magnetic field generator that would be mounted on the mining machine. At the NIOSH Safety Research Coal Mine in Pittsburgh, researchers measured the performance of a simplified proximity detection system of this type first on the surface then underground at varying distances from a coal face. Analysis of these measurements shows that the presence of coal does not have a measurable impact. Crushing and grinding, or comminution, circuits are the most energy intensive process of a mineral processing plant. Comminution involves the physical size reduction of an orebody to a particle size sufficient for recovery of the mineral values. However, the comminution process remains inherently inefficient. The inefficiency is a result of the operating nature of comminution devices such as grinding mills, where transfer of energy between grinding media and particles in unconstrained and completely random. New comminution circuit design strategies are presented in this paper. The aim of the new strategies is to improve the overall efficiency of the comminution process and reduce the total energy consumption of a comminution circuit. The energy efficient strategies include the: ? rejection of coarse size liberated gangue from the comminution circuit and further downstream size reduction ? use of more efficient grinding and crushing equipment ? the selection of coarser particle product sizes to alleviate the increased energy intensity required to achieve finer product sizes Singularly and when combined, these energy efficient strategies can significantly decrease the overall energy consumption of a comminution circuit. This paper also explores the financial impact of certain energy efficient strategies using an analysis tool called EcoNomics?. It shows that substantial financial gains can be made by including more efficient technologies and methods in comminution circuit design.

In the present work, a ceramic foam elaborated with illitic clays was characterized. Properties related to density and compression strength were determined in samples fired at 1300oC, a temperature that permits the clay structure to generate and retain gases that will produce the foamy structure. The microstructure of the ceramic foam was studied by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and mercury porosimetry. The results showed that the ceramic foam presents a bulk density of 0.38 g/cm3. The microstructure is formed by large open pores, quartz particles and vitreous phase.

A wide range of materials are used in hydraulic backfilling operations and the pipeline flow behaviour of these mixtures varies considerably. It is shown that despite the large differences in constituent materials and flow behaviour, a common approach can be applied to analysing the flow of all hydraulic backfills. This is extended to include a rational design approach for backfill distribution systems. The use and limitations of pipe loop tests as a design aid is discussed. Backfill quality control is identified as a key area where improvement needs to be made to enhance the reliability of backfill system operation.

The sinking and lining of a large mine shaft with 8.0 m i.d. and 1,133 m total depth is described in detail. The ground freezing method was applied to safely sink the shaft through unstable, waterbearing strata. Following a brief introduction to the geological and hydrological conditions and the owner's shaft requirements, is the general technical concept to sink and line the shaft. Particular emphasis is put on the lining system which has to provide stability and absolute watertightness for the lifetime of the shaft, even though mining takes place in its immediate proximity. Machinery and equipment used to execute the work are mentioned and commented. Furthermore, the excavation and lining of the large filling stations using rock anchors and shotcrete are described. Details on performance rates are given.

Construction blasting has allegedly been the cause of property damage in the following situations: (1) When the detonation of the shot hurls rock and debris into the air that causes property damage upon impact; and (2) When property owners notice cracks in their walls and foundations after they experience the momentary vibrations that coincide with the detonation of the shot. The current state of the law for both these situations is firmly established. Blasting is classified as an abnormally dangerous activity, for which the blaster is held strictly liable, whether the damage is the result of flying debris or vibrations and concussions generated by the blast. It is when the alleged blasting damage is supposedly from concussions and vibrations, however, that the courts usually reach the wrong result. The typical scenario involves property owners that thoroughly investigate their property after feeling blast generated vibrations, and find cracks that they believe did not exist beforehand. Most often the truth is that the property owners have never noticed these cracks before because they have never looked that closely before. Any structure has a certain number of cracks due to a variety of causes, such as settlement overtime and temperature and humidity changes.

The leaching of zinc and copper from Nigerian bulk sulphide ore with sulphuric acid in the presence of hydrogen peroxide was studied. The aim of the study was to investigate the effectiveness of hydrogen peroxide as an oxidant for the sulphuric acid leaching of zinc and copper from a complex sulphide ore. Distribution of elementals within the various particle sizes was initially determined by ICP-OES and XRF to provide a basis for explaining the dissolution process. The effects of concentration of hydrogen peroxide, particle size, stirring speed, and leaching time at a constant temperature of 298K were studied. There were variations in elemental and mineralogical composition within the different sizes. The concentrations of zinc and copper reduced as particle size decreased while silica, sulphur, iron and lead contents increased. Dissolution results showed that the leaching rate of copper was lower than that of zinc. The highest recoveries of zinc and copper were obtained at a leaching time of 180 minutes, stirring speed of160 rpm, particle size of 75 µm and a concentration of 1M H2SO4/1MH2O2. It was observed that the leaching rate of zinc and copper increased with increasing hydrogen peroxide concentration. Increased stirring speed had a negative leaching effect as it promotes hydrogen peroxide decomposition. Strata III is a full-spectrum roof control system which provides the mine operator the ability to upgrade his roof control in place. The procedure is easily adaptable with current roof bolting techniques. To use the system, the operator starts by installing a special hollow core mechanically anchored roof belt during the roof bolting cycle. This bolt can be upgraded to a fully grouted tensioned rebar bolt by injecting StrataGee G-300, a special polyurethane grout, around the bolt through an injection port in the roof plate. This same bolt can then be used to inject RokLok binders for roof consolidation by pumping the binders through the core of the bolt. This concept in roof control was developed to provide the mine operator a flexible way to maintain roof control in areas which deteriorate over time, or must be kept open for long periods of time. Possible locations of use would be: longwall set-up rooms, recovery rooms, headgates, intersections, and belt entries.
