Platinum-group minerals (PGM) are recorded from a number of localities along theWaiau River, western Southland, and the south coast of the South Island, New Zealand. At each locality, small amounts of PGMs were recovered as by-products of historical gold mining operations. During the period 1890-1950 an estimated 1000-2000 oz. of æplatinumÆ were recovered from the region, the only area within New Zealand where PGM have been commercially exploited. The PGM suite of southern New Zealand consists of Pt-Fe alloys, IPGE (iridium subgroup, platinum-group elements) alloys, sperrylite (PtAs2), cooperite (PtS) and braggite ((Pt,Pd)S). The composition of Pt-Fe alloy exhibits considerable variation and two compositional populations are recognised. Some Pt-Fe alloy grains are chemically zoned. Iridium is the most abundant IPGE alloy phase and often contains considerable Pt, in contrast to osmium and ruthenium alloys. Cooperite and braggite grains are characterised by extremely low concentrations of Ni.   Exsolution of osmium and iridium from Pt-Fe alloy and Pt-Fe alloy from iridium is observed Several PGM host mineral inclusions which vary from single to poly-phase, display rounded to equant outlines and range in diameter from greater than 100 ¦m to less than 5 ¦m. Olivine and Ni-sulphide inclusions are only present within IPGE alloys. Pt-Fe alloy, cooperite, braggite and sperrylite host Cu-Fe sulphides, a wide variety of PGM, clinopyroxene, amphibole, magnetite and plagioclase within inclusions. Sperrylite also hosts Pd bismuthiotellurides, gold and several potassium-rich silicate phases. Similarities in inclusion phases and mineral chemistry from several localities suggest that the PGM are derived from a single (as yet unidentified), probably calc-alkaline magmatic source. This source is situated somewhere along the margins of the western Southland sedimentary basin where PGM liberated by erosion are transported down the Waiau River and dispersed eastwards along the coast by strong longshore currents.

"Economic returns for the copper industry have been assessed by building cash flow models for each of the 100 new mines brought into production over the past 20 years. Ninety-one of the 100 new mines returned the assumed 8% cost of capital and generated a positive net present value (NPV) at the development decision point. Economic criteria for individual mines are highly variable with NPV ranging from -$111 million (-$111M) to +$3850M (all money values are presented in United States dollars) and internal rate of return (IRR) ranging from -8% to +95%. The copper industry collectively would generate approximately $39 billion dollars in NPV through the development of the 100 new mines.The returns to exploration ($174M per deposit) were measured by deducting the cost of exploration per deposit ($221M) from the returns to development per deposit ($395M). Overall, the copper business has provided positive returns to exploration. However, the variability in returns across deposits means that only 41 of the 100 new mines can carry the average cost of exploration. The long lead times and high costs associated with exploration result in only those deposits with large amounts of contained copper being able to cover the average finding cost of the industry.The returns to development and exploration are shown to be highly sensitive to the cost of capital and metal price assumptions. With respect to deposit type, porphyry deposits are both larger (NPV) and exhibit lower profitability (IRR) than the nonporphyry deposits. On a geographic basis, returns to development and exploration are higher in Chile than elsewhere, reflecting the larger average deposit size and lower average exploration cost per deposit."

A test has been devised that can predict accurately the % crystallinity developed in a slag film formed between the steel strand and the mould. The % crystallinity in the test samples was determined and compared with that for slag films formed in the mould when casting with that flux. There was good agreement between the % crystallinity in the test samples and the slag films. It was found that additions of TiO2and ZrO2had little effect on the amount of crystalline phase formed, but additions of CaO caused a dramatic increase in the amount of crystalline phase formed. Various parameters (which can be calculated from chemical composition of the flux) have been plotted against % crystallinty in the test samples. It was found that the modified (NBO/T) ratio provided the best relation with % crystallinity for the various parameters tested. There commended relation is % crystallinity=141.1(NBO/T)-284.0. "The purpose of this report is to present a generalized preliminary design and cost estimates for a typical heap leach operation such as might be undertaken in Northern Ontario. This report should be of value to anyone in the mining industry planning, or contemplating, a heap leaching operation in Ontario, either on a large or small scale. While more detailed costing and design work will obviously be required for each specific project being contemplated, the data provided in this report should enable parties to make preliminary estimates of the costs of proposed projects and should identify most of the planning and design parameters that will need to be considered.Although heap leaching has been used extensively as a low cost gold recovery method in other parts of the world for many years, it has only recently become of interest to the Canadian mining industry.In order to investigate and demonstrate the feasibility of using heap leaching in Ontario, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources in 1982, undertook to locate a private sector proponent willing to undertake a 10,000 ton demonstration project. This project was to have been carried out at a production scale under normal northern Ontario field conditions. The Ministry was to have provided technical management and design for the designated project."

"Water quality plays an important role in oxide flotation. The effects on selective flotation of fine (1-16 um) pyrochlore of two types of water used at the Niobec concentrator, potable and plant recycle, were assessed. Several pyrochlore collectors and silicate depressants were tested. Water effects were different for each mineral-reagents) combination. In general plant recycle water decreased selectivity and increased reagent consumption. Interpretation of results is given in terms of electrokinetic effects, hydrolysis of cations, and mineral-collector interactions. Two techniques of treatment for plant recycle water, cation precipitation and zeolite adsorption were assessed. The former was found to be more effective under the tested conditions but recycle water continued to give poorer selectivity than the potable.INTRODUCTIONWater quality plays an important role in selective flotation. Specific effects have been reported by many workers (1-6) and in general the better the water quality the more selective is flotation. Water composition depends on origin and the minerals being processed. For example pulp containing salt-type minerals (calcite, apatite, dolomite) will contain more Ca and Mg cations than that from a sulphide deposit. Another source of water contamination is the flotation reagents added to the pulp, particularly if water recycling is practiced."

The mining industry contributes their coordination of obligation concerning reclamation and recultivation of the already existing individual projects. While designing the landscape components and establishing the infrastructure for the different tasks, the production of gravel and sand is yield as a by product. The result is a long term perspective for region and industry."

Sulphur-rich minerals such as authigenic pyrite (FeS2) are commonly associated with coal mine workings. Metallic elements such as arsenic (As), copper (Cu) and zinc (Zn) are enriched in the pyrite relative to their concentrations in the surrounding environment. Exposure of pyrite and coal to air and water results in a series of oxidation and hydrolysis reactions that are commonly catalysed by species of Thiobacillus bacteria. These reactions lead to a lowering of the pH in the drainage waters (acid mine drainage, AMD) and subsequent mobilisation of trace metals in environmentally significant concentrations. This study assesses the spatial distribution of As, Zn and Cu concentration in water in relation to pH and Eh (redox potential) downstream from the tailings at the Wangaloa opencast lignite mine in southeast Otago. This mine was abandoned in the late 1980s due to a decrease in the economic viability of mining the lignite. The area is showing the characteristic symptoms of AMD, which is detrimental to the health of several Pinus radiate growing on some of the tailings. The pH of the drainage waters can get as low as 2, and in some instances, lower, but it returns to near neutral (pH 6.5) up to 200 metres down stream from the base of mine waste piles. It is well documented that the atmospheric oxidation of pyrite is catalysed microbially, causing a substantial decrease in the pH of the drainage waters. Acidification is then counteracted predominantly by natural abiotic remediation processes occurring downstream.

This paper illustrates the use of variography and moving average plots as an aid to analysing variations in the process that can be used to direct the improvement efforts. The hydrometallurgical processes used in manganese metal production consist of sequential unit operations that include milling and reduction of manganese ores. Leaching of the reduced ore, is followed by solid-liquid separation, residue disposal, solution purification and electrowinning of manganese metal completes the process. The nearly 250 integrated process control loops rely on reports of pH, flow pressure, level, temperature and chemical analyses. Metallurgical accounting, reconciliation and process control is achieved through monitoring of the chemical and mass balances within the manganese reduction plant, requiring approximately 50 000 analyses of solids, powders and liquids each month. The largest numbers of samples are taken in the cell house. Changes and variations monitored by sample statistics ensure that the manganese products comply with predetermined specification limits. Optimising the information-value of the approximately 50 000 samples in the manganese plant is carried out in tandem with ongoing process optimisation. Variographic analysis of daily sampling data suggests that the cyclical behaviour evident in the moving average plots is only a reflection of random residual variability and not a reflection of true underlying variability related to cyclical phenomena. Low resolution in the variogram of daily sampling data masks the short-range variability that emerges when hourly data are analysed. Hourly samples collected over a 39-day period (giving 941 sample data), helped identify short-range cycles in the process. The relative distribution of variability for daily sample intervals, indicate that 57 per cent arises from V[0], 18 per cent from V[process] and 16 per cent from random residual variation. V[0] includes all the uncontrolled sampling error arising from a poor sampling protocol, the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. This confirms the suspicions regarding the suboptimality of the sampling protocol and the way it is implemented. The absence of long-term trends in the leach suggests that short-term variation (less than one day) dominates the process. While the control charts indicate that the overall processes are maintained above the lower specification limits and the target values, there is nevertheless a considerable amount of variability in the system that overhangs the processes and threatens to impact them negatively. Although the variability in the leach is above the prescribed limits, the volatility is a matter of concern because it seems to be uncontrolled. The comparison of the various sources of variability in data collected on an hourly basis suggests that the short-term random variability (V[0]) accounts for almost 50 per cent of the variability in the process. The main source of this variability is due to errors in the sampling protocol and is probably related to the size of the fundamental error (FE), the grouping and segregation errors (GSE), the delimitation error (DE), the extraction error (EE), etc. Remediation of FE and GSE will probably lead to a reduction in V[0], whereas V[process] could be mitigated by reducing the biases associated with DE and EE in particular.

"ABSTRACTAn example from a guidelines document for the Eurocode is discussed that addresses design for geotechnical strength of piled foundations in settling soil, generating drag force and downdrag. A modified example of geotechnical response is then analyzed in a failure mode, Ultimate Limit States (ULS), and stationary long-term state, Serviceable Limit States (SLS). It is shown that the Eurocode principles, when applied to correctly determined forces, results in an irrational and costly design. The results of the analysis of the modified example are applied to eight different codes pertaining to piled foundations from USA, Canada, Europe, and other countries. Several of the codes require that the drag force be included as a load in a ULS design, which an absurd and costly requirement, in some codes, in one case made even worse by combining drag force with live load. A major weakness of almost all codes is their minimal treatment and sometimes total absence of aspects of settlement of piled foundation. In contrast, my main argument is that design for capacity, whether in working stress approach, or by LFRD or ULS approaches, is not always safe unless a thorough settlement analysis shows that the design also meets the requirements of the SLS.1. INTRODUCTIONFirst, there were analysis, design, and construction establishing a State-of-Practice, SOP. Then, came codes and specifications summarizing the SOP, as interpreted by a committee. When the state-of-art, SOA, was not understood by that SOP-interpreting committee, the codes and specifications are uneconomical and, sometimes, also unsafe.The paper first presents an example quoted from two commentaries on the Eurocode 7 on design for geotechnical strength by the Eurocode (1997). The example is then modified to a more realistic case and analyzed in failure mode (ultimate limit states, ULS) and in the context of settlement (serviceability limit states, SLS). The analysis results are then applied to eight codes addressing piled foundation design and changes necessary for the referenced codes and specifications to be closer to the SOA are identified."

Cyclic voltammetric and potential step chronoam-perometric techniques were used to study gold dissolution in cyanide solution. Three distinct anodic and one cathodic peaks appear on the voltammogram between -0.50 and 0.80 V vs SCE. The corresponding reactions were proposed to explain the peaks and the passivations. The proposed reactions were in agreement with the effect of pH, cyanide concentration and the rotating speed of the electrode on the magnitude of the peak currents. Cyclic voltammetric tests, with various vertex potentials, were also conducted to examine the proposed reactions. Steady-state currents at various potentials were obtained by potential step chronoamperometric technique and were compared with transient currents obtained by the cyclic voltammetric technique.

An overview of recent development of CSIRO?s Multi-Phase reaction models will be presented with examples comparing the calculated physico-chemical properties of metallurgical slags with the existing experimental data. The paper will also outline the development of a kinetically based model for molten bath reactors and its application to submerged combustion of coal in a slag bath as well as the reaction between the slag and injected coal particles. The plume model combines established models for the combustion of pulverized fuel with models for the growth and rise of bubbles from a lance or tuyere. This model predicts the extent of de-volatilization and combustion of the coal in the plume, the utilization of oxygen and the exchange rate of oxygen between the gas and the bath as well as the heat transfer rate between the gas bubbles and the bath. The slag reduction model brings together the recently measured rate data and fundamental understanding of the kinetics of CO-CO2reaction with iron oxide containing slags and predicts the changes resulting from injection of coal particles into molten slags. The top-space model covers reactions between gases and molten droplets in the post-combustion zone, where heat and mass transfer between phases results in higher utilization of the fuel values in the partly oxidized gases and transfer of heat to the molten bath. "Microwaves have the capability to heat up sulphides, especially clusters of particles of approx. 1 mm. Some sulphides absorb microwaves more readily than others. Molybdenite is especially effective in this regard, possibly due to its flaky nature and/or electrical conductivity. Even where it occurs in low concentrations in a deposit, individual rocks may be ore grade due to the high monetary value of MoS2. Such rocks often result from crushing mined veinlets or stockwork, or are contained in the cutoff grade fraction of ROM. Machine segregation of rocks high in MoS2 by infrared sensors after microwaving could therefore advantageously be used to upgrade lower grade ore between Mine and Mill. This would reduce the size of the latter, and thus its CAPEX and OPEX. Such upgrading could also yield shipping ore for a distant Mill, or extend ore reserves.Barrick Gold Corp. has been supporting the development of MW/IR sulphide sorting for the past three years. The results of MW/IR sorting work on molybdenite and other (pyritic) ore samples from a variety of sources are being presented here.INTRODUCTIONThis paper looks at mechanized, i.e. machine ore sorting technologies currently available and under development, and what conditions would be needed for the potential application of such ore sorting to sulphide mining and milling. Current machine sorting involves no-contact sensing technology for rocks, and signal processing after sensing to activate airblast segregation of certain rocks, normally the smallest mass to keep compressed air costs down.The forerunner of modern sorting is probably magnetic separation, which utilizes an inherent property of certain ores to divert it into mag and non-mags fractions. Radiometric ore sorters, which have been applied successfully for decades in the pre-concentration of uranium ores (Wotruba and Riedel, 2006) initiated modern sorting. In the 90’s, sensor-based machine sorting became a viable means of increasing the overall economic recovery of a resource. This technology became driven by the availability of low cost computing equipment and the concurrent development of algorithms, and by the availability of extremely fast response sensors and air actuators, allowing the sorting equipment to run faster, dropping the cost per tonne. It has been in industrial minerals processing that rock sorting has been most widely adopted, not really surprising. Liberation occurs on a different scale than in the base metal industry. Most industrial minerals are mined from massive deposits, requiring (in the past) no upgrading. Many of these operations now run into product contamination problems, which ore sorting can solve. One illustration: in Finland, a quarry is separating limestone from dolomite at 500 tonnes / hour, with individual rocks weighing up to 15 kg. Many of these industrial minerals operations have stockpiles of earlier discarded below-quality rocks, now being reprocessed with the help of ore sorting. The economics of this are very favourable, going from zero or negative value (stockpiles can not be left when closing the mine) to full product value for at least a portion of the stockpile. This suggests that in the future the economics of overburden sorting could become attractive under the right circumstances and such treatment could well become an integral part of open pit mine development."

This device is an adoption of a concept originally developed in South Africa for use where unusually adverse conditions may warrant the added cost. How It Works A coupling in the rock bolt allows controlled elongation if the load increases beyond the bolt's design strength. This paper describes the development of a life of mine schedule (LOM) for one of the world?s largest known sedimentary Copper-Cobalt districts located in the Katanga Province, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). A particular feature of the Tenke Fungurume LOM schedule is the considerable number of pits/phases for scheduling, each competing to provide the best ore available to a capacity constrained process facility. This paper discusses the main scheduling objectives and constraints, data pre-processing as a scheduling aid, the mine scheduling approach, and results and conclusions.

"Abstract Pile foundation is one of fundamental techniques to improve the bearing capacity and settlement characteristics of superstructures. Wide varieties of piles having various shape, size and material were developed and have been applied to a lot of construction projects throughout the world. The deep mixing method, an in-situ admixture stabilization method, was developed in 1970s in Japan and the European countries, and has been frequently applied to many construction projects for various improvement purposes such as increasing bearing capacity and horizontal resistance, reducing ground settlement, preventing liquefaction and so on. The design methods, execution procedure and quality control and assurance (QC/QA) of the method are standardized or specified in many countries. These standards, specification and/or technical manual have been a remarkable contribution to spread the techniques throughout the world. The QC/QA is one of the major concerns for clients and engineers who have poor or no experience of the technologies. In order to assure the high quality of deep mixing work in the global market, it is necessary to establish the concept of QC/QA and correlate the output of different procedures. Upon the request by the organizing committee of the DFI-EFFC International Conference on Piling & Deep Foundations, the authors conducted survey of the specifications and standards on the piling and deep mixing technologies in Asian countries. On the other hand, precast pre-stressed concrete piles or cast-in-place piles are mainly used in on land construction. When precast pre-stressed concrete piles are constructed, piles are usually set by inner excavation method because of preventing noise and vibration problems. More than 50 years ago, noise and vibration problems had not been serious problem in Japan, but around 50 years ago, they became serious and now less noise and vibration construction methods are used for pile construction on land in Japan. In Asian countries, though piles used for construction have a lot of variety, precast pre-stressed piles are commonly used. In this report, execution controls of construction methods of steel pipe piles and precast concrete piles are mainly considered."

Every two years, industry leaders and practitioners of tunneling and underground construction gather at the Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) to learn from their peers about the most recent advances and breakthroughs in this unique fleld. Industry experts from around the world highlight their most recent projects and share real-world experiences. They also share with their colleagues new technologies and methodologies that attendees can take home to their respective projects. The 2013 RETC was held June 23-26 in Washing-ton, D.C., itself home to several major tunneling and underground construction projects. The conference is sponsored by SME. Attendance was 1,384 professionals. The accompanying exhibit hosted 159 companies in 188 booths. A few of the topics covered in the technical sessions dealt with caverns and large spans, contracting practices, tunnel linings, design and planning, geotechnical considerations and instrumentation. The conference was preceded by four short courses, all well attended. They were ?Grouting in Underground Construction,? ?Tunnel Lining Design,? ?Microtunneling Application? and ?Risk, Uncertainty and Hard Decisions.? In addition, a sold-out field trip to D.C. Water?s Blue Plains Tunnel took place following the conference. The Blue Plains Tunnel is part of the agency?s Clean Rivers Project. Also during the meeting, three students each received $5,000 scholarships from the UCA of SME, while another three students each received $2,500 scholarships from RETC (See page 53).

In this study, the development of a new method for investigating the diffusion of metal cations in multi-component slag systems, using microprobe analysis is discussed. This method allows the analysis of the diffusion of multiple species within a single system. This project has focused on the diffusion characteristics of manganese, iron, calcium and silicon in silicate slags, in order to simulate industrial steel and ferromanganese production. The diffusion behaviour of transition metals is of particular interest because of the effects of their variable valence. This study identified the variation in diffusivity of slag components with changes in composition and temperature of multi-component slag systems. The molecular structure of the experimental calcium-aluminosilicate slags was investigated to determine the chemical and physical properties that influence diffusion behaviour. This experimental data was used to develop predictive models for diffusivity. These models enable the estimation of the diffusivity of many slag components in complex slags, over a range of compositions.

On the ‘Majdan III’ open pit mine, supplying with brick clays the production plants of the industry of building material ‘Potisje-Kanjiza’ from Kanjiza, a modern ECS (excavator-conveyor-spreader) complex was built, integrating four bucket excavators, six conveyors and one spreader into a whole. This complex connects the mineral-exploitation unit with the final brick-products plant of the company. Monitoring and management of the ECS complex is carried out by modern computer-supported information-management system (IMS) implementing most modern measuring-regulation, computer and GPS equipment. It was concluded that, for safety reasons, the functions of the IMS should be developed by a component of active visual monitoring of the ECS complex. For this purpose, the task of making a project on intelligent system for visual monitoring of the ECS complex was entrusted to the Department of Computer Application at the Faculty of Mining and Geology, University of Belgrade. This paper gives a review of basic project solutions. This paper addresses the challenges experienced by the designer and three government agencies during implementation of major improvements for the Turkey Creek Tunnel in Kansas City, Kansas. The tunnel serves as a vital stormwater conveyance system for upstream flood control. Major structural deficiencies were identified within the tunnel including complete loss of sidewall and invert. Without immediate attention, complete loss of the tunnel arch could lead to blockage and extensive remedial repairs under difficult conditions. Considering that tunnel flows must be maintained during construction, a phased design and construction process has been implemented to expedite stabilization of the erosion cavities followed by tunnel liner repairs.
