S EVERAL FACTORS have brought about a vastly greater interest in the gold-mining industry in the last two or three years. Outstanding is the fact that there is an open market at a fixed price for all that can be produced. a condition that holds for no other commodity. Costs of production have decreased greatly, owing to lower prices of supplies and equipment and lower wages. Improved metallurgical processes and equipment are also available. To big new gold district is being opened up but virgin ground is being prospected with some success in many of the more remote parts of the world and right here in the United States many old properties are being reopened 111 the light of present condition<, tailing dumps are being re- worked, and profitable leases taken on abandoned property. Many of the men who are becoming interested in gold are mining engineers whose experience has all been with base metals heretofore: some are engineers with no mining experience; some are not engineers at all but men who cannot find profitable employment in their usual field of activity and are attracted by the age-old lore of the yellow metal. Some are business men with a little money and an idea that under present conditions gold mining offers a safer investment for it than most other kinds of business. It is to those more or less inexperienced new- comers in the gold-mining industry that this article i4 ad dressed. Those who are connected with the large gold mines or who have had rears of experience with the small ones will find in the following pages little or nothing of interest but it is hoped that the newer generation of small mine operators, on whom the healthy growth of the industry depends so much, may find here some helpful hints.

Where to get the necessary development funds is a common problem facing many juniors.This month, Tax Notes discusses briefly the principal income tax implications of several alternative development plans that are typically available to the junior mining company and its shareholders.IntroductionAt some point in time, many junior exploration companies face a common dilemma-a promising prospect has been proven up and is read y for further development, but alas, the company is flat broke! In this situation, a number of alternatives is available to the company, including the possibility of ""going it alone"" by raising capital through a public offering, or by striking a deal with a ""major"" or some other substantial investor.This article focuses on the latter possibility, and discusses in broad term s the main income tax implications of various arrangements between a typical junior exploration company and a larger public company for the development of a particular property. It will be appreciated that a discussion of other important considerations, such as those pertaining to securities exchange regulation s and company law requirements, is beyond the scope of this article.Jointly Owned CorporationPerhaps the simplest way of dealing with the problem of financing the development of a property is to sell the property outright, pocket the proceeds, and run! Clearly, though, this alternative is unacceptable to most prospectors and developers, who are predictably reluctant to completely relinquish their equity interest in a promising property. An additional strike against such an outright sale is that the sale could trigger an income tax liability. Generally speaking, in the case of a simple sale of a mineral property, for income tax purposes the proceeds are applied to reduce the taxpayer&apos; s unclaimed balance of Canadian development expense (""CDE""), with any unapplied excess being brought into income and taxed at ordinary corporate tax rates."

Steelmakers are increasingly motivated to use iron ore resources with a wider range of grades and mineral types that were previously considered unsuitable or uneconomical for sintering. In this respect, specific issues, which now require further investigation and understanding, include the sintering of ore types with:- overall higher gangue content- elements that cause problems in the steel manufacturing operations- distinctive sintering performance compared with traditional hematite-rich iron ores. Laboratory-based investigations of the sintering performance and the behaviour of gangue impurities during sintering is an important step towards the successful utilisation of these resources in steelmaking.In terms of laboratory-based sintering investigations, there are two generally accepted experimental scales utilised prior to undertaking industrial-scale trials, which include: bench-scale tablet (compact) testing and pilot-scale pot testing. The former has the advantages of flexibility and more precise control of sintering conditions; but it is difficult to simulate the heterogeneity of a sinter bed. The latter, which is carried out in pots with diameters between 150–500 mm, simulate the commercial sintering process and conditions quite well, but is time-consuming and labour-intensive due to operational complexity. It is therefore desirable to establish a smaller scale pot testing facility that avoids the disadvantages of the normal sintering pot but can provide comparable information.To explore the feasibility of small-scale pot testing, a ‘millipot’ facility was established to examine the sintering performance of iron ores and other non-traditional ferrous materials. The millipot has a diameter of 53 mm and height of 400 mm. The facility has the capability to monitor the sintering temperature at a number of locations (axial, radial) within the sinter bed and to adjust the suction (‘windbox’) pressure. Finding a balance between practical and acceptable groundwater management, and providing for the needs and impacts of mining developments remains a challenge. The changes that accompanied the recent implementation of water reforms have provided greater flexibility for the water manager and greater certainty for the resource user. However uncertainty associated with understanding of complex aquifer systems, balanced against providing for the needs of mining developments, the rights of existing water resource users and expectations of the broader community have not diminished the conflicting issues faced by water resource managers and resource developers. Licensing under the Water Act 2000 provides the regulatory link with the taking of water for water supply purposes or as a consequence of the mining activity. This paper outlines key elements of sustainable water resource management involving certainty of access to water and adaptive environmental management that are delivered through conditioning the water licences issued for the particular mining development. Implementation of this approach is illustrated through a case study involving the BHP Billiton Cannington Mine in North West Queensland.

THE orebodies of the Preston East Dome mine show a considerable variation in size,? shape, dip, and ground condition. They vary from small and large irregular masses being mined by shrinkage, cut-and-fill, and square set-and-fill mining methods to narrow veins being mined by open stoping. Standardization of mining operations has necessarily been difficult. This considerable variation in mining condition prompted the development of a bonus system which would give more equitable bonus payments through-out the mine than those obtained by the usually accepted methods of calculating mine bonus. PRINCIPLES ON WHICH THE SYSTEM IS BASED Under an incentive bonus system, performance (efficiency) and a price per unit of work done are inter-related. It is in the application of this? principle to working conditions .in the Preston East Dome mine that the system to be described differs from the standard methods of calculating mine bonus. It was found that the method of paying a fixed price per unit of work done, under the &apos;contract&apos; system, gave satisfactory results in development, less satisfactory results in timbering, and results which were not satisfactory in stoping. Under the fixed price system, bonus payments, in timbering and stoping particularly, were very erratic and did not necessarily represent fair payment for the work done. A fixed price in development is satisfactory because the work done, and the conditions under which the work is done, are uniform. The drilling and blasting cycle is completed in one shift, the size of heading is con-trolled, and a minimum number of holes are required in order to obtain a satisfactory break. The performance possible under these conditions has been found to be confined to a fairly narrow range. By performance in development is meant the efficiency of the working crew as expressed in terms of the two variables of feet of advance per round and pounds of ex-plosives consumed per foot of advance. A change in rock formation, how-ever, may alter to a marked degree the performance possible, quite independent of the skill and energy of the working crew. The changes in working conditions that affect development performance from the standpoint of bonus calculation are usually easily apparent and are satisfactorily met by establishing several fixed prices.

A systematic, comprehensive, balanced approach is presented for underground coal mine design, capable of being standardized and generalized. This approach epitomizes professionalism and must preceed the physical product. Design involves a varied senior staff and requires extensive selective input data. Engineering follows a total systems approach, operating in and for a constricting geologic setting, heavily constrained for safety, health, and environmental protection. It must also anticipate execution and operation. Engineering prominence and momentum are maintained, with sub-optimizations balanced by judgments--the "art and science" of engineering. The flow-chart starts with organized input data: Company Capabilities, Property Description, Geologic Analysis and Reserve Analysis. Engineering combines Ground Control with Excavating and Bulk Handling to map feasible Mining Methods, the crucial Milestone Diagram. Layout and Sequencing follow, with numerous alternatives examined. Scheduling is performed on the best designs, using predicted advance (performance) rates. Active and mined-out areas are isolated into time-related parcels, or increments, for the mine life. Bulk Handling, Life Support (especially ventilation and drainage), and Normal Support systems occupy each parcel. Regulations are then checked. Management concerns are covered, and an Economic Analysis is performed for profitability. This and the design represent an Initial Tentative Solution. Continued iterations produce multiple and improved choices.

The author has developed a seven-step process called the Applied Rock Mechanics (ARM) Protocol that the author has used to solve numerous roof stability problems in mines throughout North America since 1975. It is a practical evaluation process using trained observation, innovative data collection instrumentation, video borehole cameras, analytical processes, and controlled testing methods that have become highly effective in solving ground control problems in every type of underground mine. This paper will describe each of the steps of the protocol and how the rock mechanics engineer applies them to resolve a typical ground control problem.

In October, 1990, a fire started in a large underground coal mine in Western Pennsylvania. During fire-fighting activities, an explosion occurred and all personnel were evacuated. Safe re-entry into the mine was not possible and the mine was sealed. Recovery efforts began in January, 1991 and continued until March, 1991, when permanent underground seals were installed between the fire area and the mine openings. This paper describes an extensive atmospheric monitoring program conducted by the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center (PS&HTC) including the analysis of mine fire gases, natural ventilation, fan pressure and air quantity distribution.

The Sunro Copper Mine is near the south coast of Vancouver Island about 35 miles west of Victoria. Failure of the roof of a large open stope let a good sized mountain stream into the mine. Broken are, boulders and sand were washed into the underground mill and out through a 7 800-foot adit. The adit became plugged; water burst out an a ridge above the adit, washing out the portal and o trestle by which it was reached, Rock and ore are strong but several systems of steep, pronounced but generally tight fractures are found on and parallel to the walls of the orebody. The stope was started from a slusher drift 390 feet below the bed of the River and brought up to an elevation 155 feet below the River by blasting vertical and horizontal rings of longholes in the nearly vertical orebody. Mining was stopped there and five months were given to grouting and bolting the pillar under the bed of the River, During this time and for several months thereafter sloughing increased the width, length and height of the stope. At the last known observation the stope was 77 to 96 feet wide, 185 feet long and the highest point of the domed back was only 55 feet below the River. The flooding took no lives. In other respects, however, it might be difficult to find in mining lore o more savage example of the application of "Murphy&apos;s Laws".

To quickly and more reliably measure the alignment and deflection of mine guides used to run skips and cages into a mine shaft. The Problem Conventional mine guide alignment measuring systems require the use of a plumb bob and tape measure. This method is not only laborious, but it is time consuming as well. Approach Aware of the drawbacks of the current measuring method, the Bureau of Mines designed a self-contained instrument system that can accurately perform vertical guide alignment and deflection measurements by remote control. How It Works The Bureau-developed instrumentation system, called the Guide Alignment Measuring System (GAMS), is based on conventional mechanical electronics using inclinometers and displacement transducers. The instrumentation system is attached to an operating skip or cage where it functions as a completely self-contained measurement system, operating in conjunction with nor-mal travel of the skip or cage. An on-board tape recorder or a mini-computer with memory can be used to record all telemetry.

"At most operating mines, geostatistical are reserve estimation methods have been implemented by head office or consulting groups . With recent advances in small computer technology it is now possible for a remotely-located mine department to independently implement a geostatistical package.This paper describes the evolution of geostatistical routines to calculate the mineral inventory for porphyry type copper/ molybdenum or similar are bodies. The problems encountered in down sizing the geostatistical routines to run using limited minesite computing facilities are discussed. The high quality of the results, in spite of some compromises to geostatistical theory, is emphasized.The first stage entailed the development of a mineral inventory based on diamond drill data. The difficulties in fitting variogram models to two metals, copper and molybdenum, and the shortcomings of the mineral inventory due to the mixing of lesser quality exploration data with data from more recent diamond drilling are discussed.To improve the ore reserve estimates for short-term planning, a mineral inventory was produced using both the diamond drill and production blast hole drilling data. This inventory, when compared to actual grades, was found to be quite satisfactory for short-term planning. The inventory also provided a reliable data base for long range pit design and financial planning. This paper describes a technique to predict achievable head grades and likely variances from target grade for the Shovelanna Iron Ore Project, in the Pilbara region of Western Australia. The block model from which the production schedule is produced was created from a wide spaced drilling program and was classified as an Inferred Resource under the JORC Code. Ideally, production schedules and target grades would be determined using a combination of Proved and Probable reserves. However sometimes it is necessary to consider the requirements of potential off-take parties who have specific grade tolerances. A technique is needed to simulate mining sequences and grade variations early in the planning process, using an æexplorationÆ block model rather than the normal æminingÆ block model. Marketing contracts require examination whether the target grade {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3 can be kept constant, or must be revised during the life of the mine. A model (written in ExcelÖ using Visual Basic macros) develops a feasible, close to optimal, mine plan from block model data. Cut-off grades for minable ore are chosen. The model evaluates ore tonnage, grade and stripping ratio against depth. Outputs at this stage include plots of slices through the orebody, at nominated x, y and z coordinates, showing ore grade, waste, drill hole locations and topography. The model then searches for a feasible satisfactory mine plan. The initial grade target is the average for the identified ore blocks. The available block list (ABL) at any time is the set of ore blocks, any one of which can be mined without removing any other ore block. The entire initial ABL has an unacceptably large ætotal grade stressÆ, defined as [(Grade-Target)/Tolerance]2, summed over the four relevant minerals {Fe, P, SiO2, Al2O3}. The model trims the ABL, removing the block most harming the total stress. Trimming is repeated until the total grade stress reduces to an acceptable level. The trimmed ABL defines the first mine campaign. Removing the trimmed block set, a second ABL is exposed, which is again trimmed and mined. The process is automatic: a few seconds computation provides a complete mine plan. Re-running the model with adjusted grade limits quickly shows whether a uniform target can be achieved or whether the target must be modified during the mine life.

The mine manager in today&apos;s environment is faced with a wide variety of problems and challenges which must be addressed if efficient and profitable operations are to be achieved. Expansion of operations has, in many instances, resulted in inexperienced work crews, face supervisors, and superintendents. The complexities of a mining system preclude rapid movement through the learning curve for moat personnel. The management of production suffers both from this inexperience and the lack of standard procedures and methods for planning, schedul ing and analyzing production systems. The lack of visibility of information, as well as of the operations themselves, due to their remoteness, adds to the problem of production management.

The decision to develop an ore body can lead to multi-million dollar profits, or equally substantial losses. Accordingly, the effort required to adapt a valuation model to the specific proposal at hand, or even the development of a new model from basic principles, is clearly warranted. In the formulation of a model of this nature, one is faced with some major questions. For example, with the long term obligations that it implies, on what basis should a decision to initiate mining operations be made? Furthermore, how can the vagaries of inflation and the uncertainties that shroud the future be accommodated? Beyond the general principles by which mineral deposits are evaluated, specific cost behaviour is a function of the geology of the deposit, and of the mine design. Moreover, mine design, during the life of the mine, must be a continuing process somewhat akin to dynamic programming. An initial, apparently optimal, design is selected and mining commences. With production, a continual process of information updating leads to revisions. Thus if the maximum value is to be obtained, the mine design must be adjusted to conform to the changed conditions.

This research focuses on enhancing the synergy between blasting and primary crushing operations in quarries. A blast operation at dstgroup aggregate quarry in northern Portugal was simulated to fine-tune blasting techniques aimed at optimizing fragmentation indicators. The methodology involves conducting precise blast drill hole surveys, generating detailed terrain 3D models, and integrating these models into blast simulation software to enhance accuracy and optimize production efficiency. The study applies these simulations to test blasts, evaluating improvements in cost-effectiveness, crusher power consumption, and fragmentation efficiency using both aerial and terrestrial image analysis technology. The quarry key performance indicators (KPIs) guide the blast design simulations, ensuring practicality and relevance. The case study blast revealed that implementing optimum blasting techniques can enhance crusher throughput, reduce operational costs, and improve safety. This paper is part one of a three-part technical series where we aim to create a sampling procedure and establish a reliable baseline for the current state of operation. This baseline will be used in subsequent follow-up technical papers to make recommendations and improvements. The outcome of this study provides a framework for quarry operations seeking to enhance their efficiency.

FROM the first to the last meeting of t h e Rocky Mountain Club John Hays Hammond served as president. He guided its deliberations when there were any, but that always y o u n g organization was never particularly deliberate. Youth never is. And the Club was the embodiment of the youthful spirit of the West, which considers any- thing can be done if there be but the will to do it. Ham- mond and the others came out of the West, but they, brought the West with them P and in all the far countries in which he has served his profession and in all the honorable offices in which he has served his country, he lived true to the ideals under which he was raised. A Californian, born in San Francisco in 1855, the son of an army officer, Major Richard Pindell Hammond, educated in the public schools of his native city, at Yale, and at Freiburg, he turned early and quickly to mining. He served his apprenticeship as all successful mining men do, as assayer, surveyor, as assistant in ex-aminations and later as principal, and finally as mine manager. Even in those days of beginnings, his future world-wide career was foreshadowed in that Mexico as well as California served as his training school. His first major step up the ladder was in connection with the Bunker Hill and Sullivan mine, where he served in various positions finishing as president and considerable owner. It was from this great lead mine that he was called to South Africa, where he remained a number of years and was the technical expert who guided the great enterprises of Barnato Brothers and Cecil Rhodes. The story of his activity in developing the "deeps" of the Rand and in opening Rhodesia has been often told but is always an alluring one of adventure and accomplish-ment. After his famous escape from death at Johannes-burg as a member of the Reform Committee, he went first to London and later returned to the United States representing both British and American capital in the purchase and development of great mines in all parts of the world. For some years he was general man-ager, consulting engineer, and director of the Guggen-heim Exploration Co., but of recent years he has oper-ated entirely on his own account and with marked success.

The Mount Morgan eopper-gold orebody is contained within a series of Mid-Devonian volcanics which occurs as a roof pendant within Permian granite. The ore minerals comprise pyrite, chalcopyrite, and local aggregations of magnetite and pyrrhotite. Silver-rich gold (electrum) is disseminated through the ore usually in ultrafine to sub-microscopic dimensions. Accessory minerals include marcasite, digenite, chalcocite, covellite, sphalerite, bismuthinite, molybdenite, calaverite, petzite, and cassiterite.Very minor accessories include cubanite, tetrahedrite, galena, arsenopyrite, hematiIe, goethite, and rutile. The gangue minerals are quartz, predominantly, with minor amounts of chlorite and sericite.Study of microtextures of a representative suite of specimens from Mount Morgan does not reveal any criteria indicative of metasomatic replacement but does show, in the case of pyrite, evidence strongly suggestive of annealing recrystallization. Other textures in pyrite indicate porphyroblastic growth of the iron sulphide.It is inferred that the Mount Morgan orebody is genetically related to the volcanic rocks and was later contact metamorphosed by the intrusive granite or by the series of intermediate to basic dykes that transect inmine area. On this basis the Mount Morgan orebody would be a contact metamorphosed volcanic hydrothermal deposit emplaced, according to recent studies, along a pipe-like zone of brecciation.

The greatest difficulty in choosing solutions to environmental problems ill a free market economy (such as ours) stems from two factors: adverse effects of pollution are largely external to the producer, and expenditures made that improve the environment result in benefits that are free to all, These two factors are sufficient to explain why the solution to many environmental problems is to be found in public action. Such action is most likely to be economic- ally efficient if it can be carried out so that industry retains the freedom to make decisions based on the free market. Two examples-a zoned discharge fee and innovation of recycling systems-illustrate the type of changes in the mineral industry that would lead to an improved environment. The first requires that ownership of the relevant public resources be vested in control agencies. The second indicates that profit opportunities existing in solid waste recycling should facilitate innovation. Both concepts can reduce environmental loadings but will require imaginative thought from persons in the mineral industries.

A study of carbonaceous ore at the Santa Fe mine (Corona Gold Inc.) shows that there is no quantitative relationship between organic carbon content and preg rob, although much of this material preg robs. However, there is a relation between K20 and preg rob. Preg rob generally occurs only in those samples with greater than 2% K20. X-ray diffraction and chemical . studies show that the critical factor is the illite content of mixed (possibly interstratified) illite-smectite. Apparently illite, at a certain threshold, "geo-activates" the carbon. The potential for easily monitoring preg rob using a gamma ray spectrometer is discussed.
