A method and equipment have been developed Tor measuring the impact strength of grains of brittle materials. It is shown that brittle materials develop a characteristic particle size distribution when fractured by impact. A simple mathematical model has been found to describe this distribution, and one of the parameters of the model has been designated the r value. The r value is directly proportional .to impact energy and, for fixed impact energy, it becomes a useful criterion of grain strength. Data are presented on the variation of the r value as a function of sample history, initial size, energy input and number of impacts, The results are interpreted in terms of the flaw theory of brittle fracture.

Unlike most ore minerals, the raw materials for lightweight-aggregate, such as clays and shales are abundant everywhere. In view of this ample choice, what are the reasons for many plant failures attributed to the raw material? How can we arrive at a proper choice of the raw material, the proper processing method for the chosen material, predict its behaviour in a plant and the properties of the final product? Determine the uniformity of the raw material and possible harmful impurities? One basic choice is sintered versus kiln-fired aggregate. It will be based on market preferences and availability of the raw material. Almost in every case a good raw material for one process is poison for the other.

Longwall mining is certainly not new in the United States, having first been used in the late 1800's in Illinois, but the surging acceptance of the method is relatively new. The number of longwall installations in this country are nearly doubling annually as this method continues to prove itself as a coal producer's delight terms of operating cost, performance and safety. Since 1951, several longwall installations have been tried in Barnes and Tucker Company operations. Although all efforts actually proved that the system itself could be used in prevailing conditions, it was not until 1967 that a unit was put in use that proved competitive with regular mining equipment, both conventional and Continuous.

A pilot plant investigation of a semi-autogenous mill - ball mill circuit is described. The plant was operated with minus eight-inch diabase as feed material to the semi-autogenous mill. The semi-autogenous mill recycle screen underflow was put to a ball mill in closed circuit with a cyclone. An operating Work Index of 13.3 to 14.9 was obtained with the pilot ball mill. This Index is substantially in agreement with the scalped feed laboratory Work Index for 15.3 for recycle screen underflow. The Bond Index of the diabase was 15.8. Thus, one may use the scalped feed laboratory Work Index to size semi-autogenous grinding plant ball mills.

The problem of how to handle heterogeneous populations in an ore reserve global estimation arises in many geostatistical studies. In some cases it is possible to split data into different significant types of ore in such way that non-overlapping subpopulations are obtained, and a separate study is possible. In other cases the subpopulations are intermingled and a set of nested structures may model the spatial variability of the ore. Finally, one of the populations, consisting of a small proportion of high grade values of economical meaning, may disturb the structural analysis. In this paper, some methods are proposed to cope with these kind of problems and typical case studies are presented.

Single-charge cratering tests can provide a direct measure of the powder factor necessary for achieving a desired effect in conventional blasting. If a desired blast effect, such as fragmentation or mound velocity, is produced by a single point-charge at a particular scaled depth of burial, then the cube of the reciprocal of that scaled depth is the appropriate powder factor for duplicating the effect in a conventional array of blast holes. Scaling formulas are presented that provide a link between point-, line- and plane-charge geometries, and which can be Apparent crater used for blast design. The different types of processes used in fine coal beneficiation in the Republic of South Africa are listed, together with data giving an indication of their separating efficiencies The two classes of coal, fines and ultra-fines, present in the -0,s m fraction of the run of mine coal are discussed, with special reference to their beneficiation characteristics. Using those properties, together with the data on plant efficiency, case studies are worked out to indicate the advantages and disadvantages of the different processing routes available. The paper closes with an indication of areas where research is required to enable some of the processes to be applied to a greater extent than is presently the case.

This paper explains and discusses a computer program that has been developed to determine the ventilation design parameters for complex auxiliary ventilation systems such as those found in the construction of long excavations with multiple headings. The program is based on the principle of partitioning the system into segments of finite length, and formulating and solving the resulting networks recursively. The resulting network problems are solved analytically. With this program, the size of fans can be determined in order to reduce the total leakage and minimize the flow recirculation. The application of the program is illustrated by the detailed solution of an auxiliary ventilation system proposed for the Exploratory Studies Facility (ESF) at the Yucca Mountain Project, Nevada.

A new process for the recovery of pure (>99.95%) palladium and platinum is described. The process, which has been tested at the pilot scale, comprises (i) the simultaneous solvent extraction of palladium and platinum by a new Schering Berlin reagent, TN 1911, (ii) washing of the loaded extractant to remove co- extracted impurities, and (iii) differential stripping of first platinum at pH 3, and secondly palladium with strong hydrochloric acid, and (iv) precipitation of palladium and platinum salts, followed by reduction to metal. The process is, unusually, a non-ammonia one requiring only small amounts of ammonia at the end where final purification may be necessary for particularly complex feed solutions.

As noted by Damon (1990), "The time that a heap (of gold ore) is on the reusable leach pad is of critical economic importance." The Interim Neutralization Study, conducted by Brohm Mining Corporation (Brohm), at the request of the South Dakota Department of Water and Natural Resources and reported by Damon indicated that improvements could be made in leaching and pointed out the need for a better understanding of the gold ore leach procedures. To provide data on an actual heap, personnel from Brohm and GEOCHEM installed a series of pressure/vacuum lysimeters in an active Brohm heap, and conducted subsequent testwork to evaluate the efficiency of leaching. In addition, the issue of environmental indicators, covering operational, management and environmental areas, that provide valuable information regarding both the environmental performance of a mining company and its efforts to influence this performance towards sustainability is discussed.

Pulp lifters are used to discharge ground pulp from non-overflow grinding mills. In straight-radial channel pulp lifters, discharge is often incomplete and back-flow down the pulp lifter can occur. Leading-curve channel pulp lifters can be used to ensure complete discharge, especially at high mill rotational speeds. The complex motion of solid materials in pulp lifters has been modelled mathematically for both straight-radial and curved pulp lifters in order to make comparisons between the two types. The model is supported by practical observations of the performance of curved pulp-lifters in a commercial 24ftSAG Mill as well as observations of the discharge from several commercial straight-radial pulp-lifter AG/SAG Mills.

Bioremediation is a complex process which involves mass transfer, chemical and biochemical phenomena. In particular, the adsorption kinetics of a substance by biomass may by model by taking into account: - Enzymatic kinetics type; - Combined kinetics - enzymatic kinetics at the same time with the Monod type biomass growth; - Chemical kinetics for substance adsorption according to Freundlich and Langmuir ad-sorption isotherms; - New empirical kinetics models based on experimental data. In this paper modelling of kinetics of bivalent lead ions on live vegetal biomass (aquatic plant Pistia stratiotes) as well as of hydrocarbons on dead vegetal biomass (pyrolysed nuts) is studied (Stoica, 2004). Modelling was carried out using experimental data and relative equations with an error of 5%.

As the mining industry is enjoying a much needed and long awaited increase in demand for natural resources, consolidations in both the mining and mining service industries and a generational departure of experienced industry professionals is challenging today’s mining companies, not only in maintaining their existing operations, but also in securing qualified resources for developing new projects. These challenges are compounded for junior mining companies, oftentimes lacking in operating properties to draw from for experienced professionals and having to compete with the majors’ “mega-projects” for experienced project personnel from the reduced ranks of engineering companies. Spartan Spatial Random Fields (SSRF?s) provide a new geostatistical framework (Hristopulos, 2003) with applications targeting environmental risk assessment and natural resources estimation. SSRF?s have the ability to incorporate constraints based on physical laws in the statistical description and have proved to be computationally fast in the analysis of synthetic data sets. This paper presents an application of a specific SSRF model and a new local-error spatial estimator (Hristopulos, 2005) in the mapping of environmental pollutants using a real data set. A detailed comparison of the local SSRF estimator with a classical kriging method is presented. It is shown that the SSRF approach provides a competitive alternative for spatial estimation.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 m (8 ft) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting. Saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile. This implies that care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a depth of at least 2.4 m (8 ft) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

The first of this two part series takes a look at some of the history and types of flotation as well as agents and mechanisms involved in it. Part two, next month, will examine flotation processes as applied to various sulfide and nonsulfide mineral ores. Flotation-"froth" flotation-is a physicochemical method of concentrating finely ground ores. The process involves chemical treatment of an ore pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of predetermined mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles carry the selected minerals to the surface of the pulp, there forming a stabilized froth that is skimmed off and from which the predetermined mineral particles are recovered. Other minerals remain submerged in the pulp.

Bacís mining is a young enterprise in Mexico that produces a pyrite concentrate rich in gold and silver. When gold and silver are associated to sulfide minerals, pre-treament such as: roasting, pressure oxidation and bioleching, is required to decompose the sulphides and thereby expose the gold and silver particles to the cyanide solution. A novel method demonstrates that the oxidation and dissolution of gold and silver in alka-line cyanide solution can be conducted simultaneously in the same autoclave in less than 90 minutes with a recovery that exceeds 96%. Factors affecting recovery efficiency such as pH, leaching time in the reactor, temperature, particle diameter, pressure, % of NaCN and pulp density were investigated.
