The washability of South African coals is described and the problems encountered in washing at low densities, to make premium products, are enumerated. The measures taken to overcome those problems, when low density separations became a commercial necessity, are described in detail. The descriptions of processes are with specific reference to the three sizes commonly treated separately in coal preparation namely coarse coal, small coal, and fine coal. Some information is given on the performance characteristics of the plants erected to meet market requirements.

An innovative concept in longwall tailgate support is discussed. This new concept utilizes a high-capacity roof-truss system to replace conventional wooden cribs. The first field test was conducted at the Bailey Mine and was very successful. Similar tests were installed in other mines and seams. An extensive instrumentation plan was designed and implemented in the truss test area. The test data demonstrated that the dynamic roof-truss system effectively controls the various abutment pressures caused by longwall mining. Thus, a stable tailgate entry is maintained

This paper discusses the influence of frother type and dosage on recovery/selectivity in coal/sulfide mineral flotation as a function of particle size. It is shown that different frother structures exhibit quite different but consistent performance characteristics depending on the underlying particle size ranges involved as well as the dosage levels of both the frother and collector. The data presented on existing commercial frothers and some new special purpose experimental frothers is used to illustrate some general operator guidelines on proper frother selection and use.

Gold is easily mobilized at temperatures within range 600-11OO°C by gases such as Cl2, CO, H2S, in gas mixtures, at low pressures. Such gases are relevant to conditions of granulite facies metaomorphism in environments of magma underplating. These observations suggest an efficient mechanism for moving gold to the upper crust during major thermal events. The efficiency of precipitation of gold at lower temperatures is related to available mineral surfaces and pyrite appears to be an excellent substrate for gold precipitation.

Hydrometallurgical processes involve the recovery of metals from ores, concentrates, calcines, mattes and scrap materials by a series of operations involving leaching or dissolution, separation, purification and reduction of metals in aqueous solutions. The underlying theoretical basis of many of these operations is electrochemical in nature and it is the purpose of this review to identify and illustrate, by way of examples from the author's experience and that of others, the central role of interfacial electrochemistry in the understanding, design and control of these operations.

"The iron ores of the Lake Superior region are found almost exclusively in rocks of Huronian age, the only exception of importance being in the Vermilion district. It may be estimated that about 95 per cent of the ores thus far mined have been obtained from Huronian rocks. Although these ores come from rocks of varying age and slightly varying type, they have many features in common, and therefore may readily be described together.The iron formations of the Lake Superior region consist essentially of interbanded layers of mixtures in widely varying proportions of silica and iron oxide, and are called taconite, ferruginous chert, or jaspilite. They vary considerably in hard¬ness and color, depending upon the tenor of silica and the history of the rock. Local phases of the iron bearing formation consist of cherty iron carbonates, greenalite or ferrous silicate, rocks, amphibole-magnetite masses, cherts and slates, and pyritic quartz rocks. The average iron content of all the original phases of the iron bearing formations, excluding interbedded slates, is about 25 per cent, while the average iron content for all portions of the formation, whether in the original condition or not, is about 38 per cent. It is believed that this difference is due essen¬tially to the removal of silica in solution from the. primary phases, and, of course, such removal of silica has in many cases produced material now used as iron ore, since it contains con¬siderably more than 38 per cent of iron."

Underground coal mining can cause seismic events. There is currently no way to predict such phenomena reliably, in particular stronger events. That is why, according to the current state of the art, empirical methods are employed in this field. Some assessment criteria, which relate to the geological and mining situation and either stimulate or rather help to avoid seismic events, are presented in this paper. These criteria are examined for a practical mining situation in Germany, with a view to estimate possible seismic events.

There used to be a time when bins were designed for total volume and placed in any available place of the plant. Poke holes were provided and feed was maintained by manual prodding, lancing, hammering, and by various mechanical flow-profiting devices. Little thought was given to what occurred inside the bins and why materials did not flow. Indeed, such mental effort was hard to justify while low-cost manual labor was plentiful, quality standards low, and rates of feed moderate. The past fifteen years have seen a drastic change in these conditions. We all know that labor for hard manual work is becoming unavailable at any wage, level. Standards of product uniformity are continuously rising. This uniformity is just as important in a fine ore feed to ball mills as it is in a cattle feed or in a flour mix. Rates of feed now frequently exceed 2,000 tons per hour per feeder. At that rate there is no time for, lancing or prodding. An efficient storage, plant contains a known available volume of bulk solid, and feeds it at the required time, at the prescribed rate, and without degradation of the product. A storage bin may also perform other functions such as blending of different grades, degasification of aerated, powders, isolation of different gaseous media. A contact bed of particles flowing by gravity in counter-current with a gas or liquid may be used as a continuous reactor. Gas or liquid pressures can be simply contained by, a sufficient head of flowing solid.

"Increasing attention to subway tunnel maintenance is being paid with the high speed development of urban rail transit system in China. A novel moving tunnel inspection equipment based on machine vision is developed in this paper. High resolution image acquisition system is proposed for tunnel crack and leakage inspection. The main components of this image acquisition system includes high speed CCD cameras, linear lights and high performance computer. To inspect the crack less than 0.3mm with a 3-5km/h speed in subway tunnel, we need to consider resolution and line rate of camera, pixels of cameras, range of inspection and illumination intensity of lights simultaneously. The optimization design is proposed to make the equipment more convenient for tunnel use. Entire tunnel situation can be detected and recorded in a single inspection process. This equipment has already been verified in Shanghai subway tunnel for defects inspection.1. INTRODUCTION In China, the quantity of subway tunnel has reached a large scale in recent years. Until 2014, there had been more than 2300km of subway tunnel in China which accounted for nearly three quarters of Chinese urban railway system (Zhang Chen,2015). In some metropolises like Beijing and Shanghai, most of the metro tunnels has already run over 20 years which within maintenance phase. This has brought about plenty of inspection work and maintenance work to guarantee the tunnel under the serviceability limit states. The increase of running mileage of subway tunnels in China has been displayed in Fig 1."

In the past three years there has been a great amount of attention given to phosphates world wide, and in particular to the Florida Phosphate Industry. I would like to relate some of the most recent history of the industry and give you a personal outlook for the future. Phosphate rock has been produced in Florida since its discovery on the Peace River in the 1880's. Through 1976, approximately 720 million ST of rock had been mined from Florida reserves, and it is my opinion that there are at least 1.2 billion tons remaining which are consolidated, accessible and can reasonably be expected to be permitted for mining. Over half the 1.2 billion tons will be deeper, more scattered, leaner and will produce lower grade rock than the Bone Valley of Central Florida has tradition-ally produced. In 1973, '74, '75 and '76 the Florida Phosphate Industry produced 32.6, 34.0, 38.2 and (38.0) (P) million ST of phosphate rock respectively. This rock was produced by ten mining companies, Agrico, Borden, Brewster Phosphates, Gardinier, Grace, IMC, Mobil, Occidental, Swift, and USS Agri-Chem; mines are located -17 in Polk County, one in Hillsborough County and two in Hamilton County, Florida. Phosphate rock is used by local companies in Florida primarily to produce phosphoric acid from which DAP and TSP is manufactured. Florida acid producers use about 15 million STPY in acid plants in Florida, and another 7.5 million STPY is consumed by acid producers in plants on and near the Mississippi River. Somewhat

"The reliable prediction of service lifetime of tunnel constructions is of essential technical and economic interest. Polymers used for tunnel liners have to fulfill the requirement of 100 years lifetime. However, today no reliably proven test method is available which confirms such long lifetimes. The current paper introduces a recently started research project which focuses on lifetime prediction of highly flexible, very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) for tunnel geomembranes. Different PE grades in combination with different antioxidant packages are conditioned at elevated temperatures and immersed in different media. Initial results confirmed significant material aging of unstabilized resins already after exposure of up to 34 weeks, at least at the highest exposure temperature of 80 °C. To consider application relevant material properties the material characterization was done by means of tensile tests and dynamic oxidation induction temperature tests. High pressure liquid chromatography was used for further investigation of antioxidant consumption kinetics. 1. INTRODUCTION For a reliable service of modern tunnel constructions a sustainable proofing against water infiltration is essential for the lifetime of the structure. Geomembranes made of polymeric materials have been used successfully for tunnel lining since several decades. Whereas previous geomembranes usually were made of plasticized polyvinylchloride (PVC-P), due to several technical advantages today very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) has become a more and more popular material for such applications. For modern geomembranes, current guidelines expect minimum lifetimes of at least 100 years (ÖBV-Richtlinie 2012). In contrast to this requirement it must be considered that today no test methodology is available which reliably confirms such long lifetimes of polymeric materials."

In the past decade, numerous urge scale drilling projects have made use of reverse circulation air lift methods. Reverse air lift pumping can be established by injecting gas into a column of liquid; the subsequently decreased density of the gas-liquid mixture allows atmospheric pressure outside the lift conduit to establish flow. The rate of flow can be controlled by varying the gas to liquid ratio. A typical reverse circulation air lift system is depicted in Figure 1. Allen1 has described a number of reverse air lift drilling projects. Although cited examples are generally related to large diameter holes, the method has seen use in other applications such as sand dredging, chemical pumping, water well pumping and continuous coring. One particular benefit obtained with enclosed reverse circulation drilling is elimination of lost circulation. The required air/water ratio for pumping at a given submergence and lift has been established experimentally by Gibbs2. His data, however, do not reflect sensitivity of flowrate to air/water ratio. Further, in Gibbs' work, air apparently is injected continuously along the column of water. This configuration differs from that used in reverse air lift drilling where air is injected at discrete points only. Gas lift theory has received considerable attention over the past decades. Orldszewski3 defined flow regimes in two phase flow. Griffith and Wallis4 determined relative velocities of gas to liquid. Two-phase flow has been studied extensively for oil transport in inclined and vertical pipes by Chierici et a15, Beggs and Brill6, and Gould, Tek and Katz.7

Filtration is an important solid liquid separation technology employed widely in the mineral processing industries. The effectiveness of the filtration operation can be influenced by numerous variables, related to the particulate phase, the slurry rheology and the equipment. The classical approach for analysis is based on Darcy's law. Knowledge of the cake pore microstructure and its correlation to macroscopic cake properties is required to model the filtration operation from a fundamental point of view. Since cake formation seems to occur randomly, a 3D Monte Carlo method was used to simulate cake formation. The configuration for simulation was a space with width of 500 µm, length of 500 µm and height of 4000 µm. Size distributions of five different industrial products whose particle size distributions follow the Rosin Rammler distribution function were used. The particle shape was assumed to be spherical. The simulated cake structures were described in terms of volume porosity (volume of pore space per unit volume of cake) and surface porosity (area of pore space per unit area of a cross section). The results indicate: I) it is possible to simulate 3D packing, which mimics cake structure, using the Monte Carlo method, 2) segregation phenomena occurs during simulated cake formation, 3) the values of calculated porosity for simulated samples B, C, D, and E were lower than those determined for corresponding industrial products Br, Cr, Dr, and Er, and 4) some structures of simulated samples seem to correlate with laboratory leaf test data obtained for different products from plant operations.

Induction times for a variety of minerals have been measured at a particle bed. Electrostatic repulsive forces between bubble and particle generally are of secondary importance in determining the hydrophobic state; nevertheless, the shortest induction times are measured at the isoelectric point of the solid. More importantly, the study shows that the film-rupture mechanism at a polished surface might be different from that at a particle bed. The induction time measured at a particle bed, besides being dependent on the surface chemistry of the system, shows a definite relationship to particle size and density. Theoretical analysis suggests that such a measured induction time at a particle bed should properly be defined as an attachment time which consists of the induction time and the film-displacement time. Thus one portion of the measured attachment time is the induction time, the time required to thin the water film between the particle surface and the gas bubble to a critical thickness so that rupture of the film takes place ('1)' The other portion of the measured attachment time is the time required for the film to be displaced to such an extent that the attachment is stabilized with respect to the upward motion of the bubble and the downward gravitational force acting on the particle ('2)' Further, the present study illustrates that '2 is related to the hydrophobic character of the surface, the rate of film displacement after rupture, the upward velocity of the captive bubble, and, most importantly, the particle size and density.

Gentlemen: The subject of this paper is: ADVANCED APPLICATIONS OF BUCKET WHEEL EXCAVATORS AND RECLAIMERS. Against an urgent world wide energy crisis, the role of bucket wheel excavators and reclaimers in the surface mining of fossil fuels and other ores has been raised to new prominence. This paper will review the reasons for the expanded application of bucket wheel technology, its unique contributions, and other factors relative to volume, cost, versatility, and efficiency. Today, surface mining is faced with the twin challenge of (1), accelerating the rate of removal of massive quantities of overburden and ore, and (2), replacing comparable high volumes of overburden back into the mined-out portion of the pit. Optimum quantitites for - a single electrical power plant now range from 5 to 15 million tons of coal per year. The use of bucket wheels offers the best method for meeting this challenge at lowest possible cost. For example, an advanced application that also satisfies environmental concerns involves the simultaneous functioning of two bucket wheel excavators during surface mining operations. Working at spaced intervals and different levels in conjunction with a transfer conveyor and stacker, one excavator removes the ore while the other one transfers overburden to a stacker that replaces it back into the open pit. The result of this continuously operating cycle is: (1) removal of ore and replacement of overburden back into the pit in massive quantities, (2) at accelerated volume and extreme low cost that cannot be matched by conventional loading machines of any size, and (3) fulfills a basic environmental requirement which is to

Carbonaceous sedimentary rocks are abundant in the upper part of the caldera or maar that hosts the Puebio Viejo Au-Ag district, and much of the Moore sulfide zone is in these rocks. These rocks are thinly layered and contain scattered plant remains and variable amounts of volcaniclastic debris and pyrite. The carbonaceous matter in the sediments yields no X-ray diffraction pattern and is not graphite. It has C/N ratios of 4 to 10, and &13C values of about -25 per mil, which indicate that it is dominantly of marine organic origin and partly degraded. Atomic S/C ratios in the unmineralized part of the carbonaceous rocks have a median of about 1.2, much higher than most similar unmineralized rocks, reflecting not only the abundance of pyrite in the sediments, but also the fact that the organic material contains several percent sulfur. Extracts from the organic material indicate that it is thermally mature and that it reacted with the hydrothermal solutions. Atomic S/C ratios in the mineralized carbonaceous rocks are generally higher than those in unmineralized carbonaceous rocks, ranging to values of 5 and more. These differences indicate that significant amounts of carbon were consumed by the reduction of sulfate and metal chloride complexes in the mineralizing fluids as they passed through the carbonaceous sediments. Direct reaction between organic material and ferrous chloride-bearing, acid-sulfate hydrothermal solutions probably caused continuous deposition of pyrite during this period. Intermittent deposition of gold from chloride complexes by the same reaction was probably facilitated by boiling or C02 effervescence.

A general study of gold refractory arsenopyrite pyrite concentrate bioleaching has been carried out including two continuous bioleach testworks at different sizes, namely one at a laboratory scale with a 100 1 unit at a 2 kg/d dry solid flowrate and the other at a pilot scale at a 100 kg/d dry solid flowrate. Both tests show a 80% bioleaching of arsenopyrite in about four days of treatment and with the same kinetic. Pyrrhotite is attacked at the earlier stage of the bioleaching but pyrite remains unaffected. The weak potential of oxidation associated with the decomposition of arsenopyrite and the abundance of arsenite leads to a high grade of elemental sulfur in the bioresidue which consumes the major part of the cyanide during the gold recovery, furthermore, the arsenite and ferrous produced in solution have to he oxidized to obtain a stable precipitate in the waste products and as outlined in previous works of other authors on this subject the addition of iron to obtain a Fe/As molar ratio at least above 3 is necessary. The agitation equipment used in the pilot unit allowed an optimisation study calculation for scaling-up the design and power requirements of an industrial installation, For the pretreatment of a gold refractory As high-graded concentrate the reagent cost has the greatest part in the operating cost of the biooxidation step due to the necessary retreatment of the biosolution, In that conditions the power cost is quite marginal, actually it is significant for the treatment of pure pyrite.

For some time a need had existed in the minerals processing field for a relatively efficient separator that would treat high tonnages of particles in the intermediate size range, i.e., those particles too large for froth flotation and too small for conventional gravity-type separa¬tors. Among those devices developed to meet this need are the centrifu¬gal specific gravity separators. These devices employ centrifugal acceleration to assist gravitational acceleration in separating light¬density minerals from heavy-density minerals. In the category of centrifugal specific gravity separators are the heavy-media centrifugal separator and the water-only cyclone. The two major centrifugal heavy-media separators, i.e., the heavy-media cyclone and the DynaWhirlpool, as well as the water-only cyclone, are discussed in terms of: design features, operating variables, operat¬ing data, and flowsheet design criteria. Examples of plant applications are given in the field of coal processing as well as the processing of other minerals such as iron ores, potash, and tin. Finally, the subject of the staging of centrifugal separators and their use in combination with other separators is discussed. PRINCIPLES For coarse sizes of minerals, efficient specific gravity separations have been possible for many years with open-bath vessels using the natural settling velocity or buoyancy of the particles. These bath ves¬sels process ore by utilizing micron-size solid particles suspended in the slurry fed to the separator. The inclusion of these particles in the slurry increases the effective density of the separating fluid to allow particle separations to be made at densities greater than that of water. However, if vessel size is to remain within economical limits, the particles processed in the bath vessel must have high settling rates in a IG gravitational field. Because of this requirement, heavy¬medium bath vessels are usually restricted to processing +V4-in. sizes. To extend efficient specific gravity separation to smaller sizes, the gravitational acceleration of particles is replaced by centrifugal acceleration. The settling of a small particle in a fluid in a centrifugal force field is similar to that found in a static bath except that the acceleration due to gravity, g, is replaced by a centrifugal acceleration where v, is the tangential velocity at radius r: V=kdm(P-P,), V'. (J) µ In more practical terms where the particles settle in a suspension of finer particles comprising the heavy media and with an effective suspension density p" V = kdm' (P P ) . v'. (2) U r To date the most effective use of this principle has been obtained with devices that rotate a liquid or suspension within a stationary enclosure in order to create centrifugal force. Cyclones are the most common devices used for this purpose, because they generate centrifu¬gal forces far greater than the force of gravity and therefore not only have high capacities but can treat finer sizes than bath-type vessels can. The two main types of cyclones used by industry are the heavy-media cyclone and the water-only cyclone. Also quite widely used is the DynaWhirlpool, which, though based on the same princi¬ple, differs in design from the conventional cyclone. HEAVY-MEDIA CENTRIFUGAL SEPARATORS Like the bath vessels, the heavy-media centrifugal separators em¬ploy media composed of micron-size particles suspended in water. However, the centrifugal force generated in these separators accentu¬ates the difference in settling rate between particles of different density and thus makes possible separations of finer size particles than can be treated in bath vessels. The two most common heavy-media centri¬fugal separators are the heavy-media cyclone and the DynaWhirlpool. Heavy-Media Cyclone Although cyclones were originally developed for use as classifiers or thickeners, it was later found that they could also effectively serve as heavy-media separators.63. 64, Design Features Fig. I I is a schematic of a typical cyclone developed to serve for any one of the following purposes: as a classifier, thickener, or specific gravity separator. The cyclone consists of a cylindrical section joined to a conical section, usually having an included angle of between 14° and 25°. Feed enters the cyclone tangentially through an orifice attached to the cylindrical section. The overflow orifice is located in the base plate of the cylindrical section. The vortex finder, a tube attached to the overflow orifice, extends into the cyclone from the base plate of the cylindrical section. The underflow orifice is located at the apex of the conical section. As some medium together with mineral particles is fed through the feed orifice, a vortex with a hollow air core extending from the overflow to the underflow orifice forms in the cyclone while hollow spray discharges form at each of these orifices. Under the influence of the centrifugal force, high specific-gravity particles move through the medium to the wall of the cyclone and descend in a spiral flow pattern to the underflow orifice. Those particles in the feed stream, lower in specific gravity than the feed medium, follow the major portion of the flow to the center of the core where they are caught in the high-velocity upward central current and are carried out through the overflow orifice. Fig. 12 shows a family of curves that illustrates how materials of varying specific gravity are recovered by a cyclone. Since the specific gravity of the medium is 1.40, the particles of 1.40 sp gr actually act as part of the medium and, regardless of the particle size, split between the underflow and overflow of the cyclone in proportion to the volume split of the medium. Particles higher in specific gravity than 1.40 are recovered in the underflow of the cyclone at increasing rates as the difference in specific gravity increases and the particle size increases. Particles lower than 1.40 in specific gravity are dis¬charged through the overflow orifice at increasing rates as the specific¬gravity difference increases and the particle size increases. However, all the curves originate at the fluid-flow ratio point for the finest particles of any gravity. Reviewing events in the minerals industry, in economic geology, and in my own exploration work, I find that the most compelling subject for comment is the increasing ferment in ore deposits theory. New discoveries and continued investigations of bedded deposits of lead and zinc, copper, iron, uranium, etc., coupled with the availability of much new and significant data from sedimentary and metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and oceanography, has led many economic geologists like myself to become disenchanted with former simplistic notions. Now disenchantment among serious people should presuppose both valid objections to the old, and valid new substitutes. I can sum up my own position and, I believe, what most of the recent writers on ore deposits theory are trying to tell us, by saying that a physico-chemical (bench science) approach to a natural science is neither correct nor useful, and that the obvious cure is a return to the study of the geology of ore deposits. More specifically, ore should be viewed merely as an unusual concentration produced, in stages, by the natural processes inherent in the geochemical cycle. In criticizing the conceptual basis of a science, one is involved simultaneously in the inherent character of the science, its subject matter, and the old and new concepts. I have found it impossible to make a clean separation along those lines. As a result, and as the title suggests, these are not-quite-random reflections on genesis, a matter near and dear to all true treasure hunters since Agricola.

Because of the "energy crisis" emphasis has been placed on bringing coal mines into full production faster. To accomplish this, more is involved than a rapid excavation system. Mine design should have the freedom within the law to customize as mining conditions dictate as long as the maximum safety of the miner is insured. A year ago, safety was the most prominent "social-human factor"--now, safety and energy self-sufficiency are primary to our national policy. The Single Entry research program as designed satisfies both. It investigates the hypothesis that a single-entry system, for longwall development, supported in the center by open cribs and divided by a fire-resistant partition, can be regarded as being equivalent to or better than a multi-entry system. This paper provides an explanation for the use and advantages of a single entry system in development for longwall mining, explains the problems anticipated with single entries and presents the research approach needed to evaluate and solve the problems. Under study are ground control, ventilation, fire and explosions, emergency procedures, and industrial hazards. Described are measurements data on crib and roof bolt loads as entry heading advances and longwall abutment load is superimposed, stress field determinations and preliminary structural analysis of the double and single entry, and methane liberation and ventilation records as entry advances. Some of the mine operation problems and waivers of mining laws will be discussed. This project is a complete system study having progressed approximately two years in a five-year program.
