Abundant beach and offshore resources of gold deposits are demonstrated along the coast of Alaska, and Nome is one of the richest places. Considerable amounts of mineral resources data were collected and stored in geodatabase of ArcGIS. In searching for the best model for the interpretation of the Nome offshore gold placer deposit and accurate estimation of the reserve, the data were processed and visualized using ArcGIS. The gold concentration data collected from the Nome offshore deposit are of characteristics such that: (1) near lognormal distribution of data, (2) high positive skewed distribution, (3) a small number of extreme values dominating the reserve estimation, and (4) apparent anisotropy of the variogram. These characteristics make the development of an interpolation model for the gold deposit a challenging task. In this study, it is determined that five geostatistical methods provided by ArcGIS with visualization capability, i.e., Inverse Distance Weighted (IDW), Ordinary Kriging (OK), Ordinary Kriging with lognormal transformation (OK-log), Simple Kriging (SK) and Indicator Kriging (IK) are suitable candidates for the development of an interpolation model. The five algorithms are evaluated and compared with each other in the study. Cross-validation technique is employed to examine the accuracy of the five approaches. It is determined that the OK and SK algorithms are not suitable for this dataset because of the difficulty of fitting the semivariogram model despite their lower RMSE (Root-mean-square error) and the higher RMSS (Root-mean-square Standardized). The OK-log algorithm does not provide satisfactory prediction either, because it places too much weight on the role of extreme values resulting in overestimation and extremely high RMSE. Reserve estimation of each blocks is conducted using each of the interpolation methods and compared with the reserve calculated using the conventional polygon method. The IWD and IK algorithm seem to provide estimations more agreeable with the conventional polygon method.

In planning for the future, Nkana Division deepened the Mindola sub-vertical shaft which was commissioned in 1994 in order to access the 30 Mt of ore between 1274 and 1570 m levels. The Nkana Synclinorium which is estimated to contain 250 Mt of ore is being accessed from the vicinity of Central Shaft. These areas are being planned with the intention of maximizing the use of computers in geological modelling and mine design so as to overcome the inadequacies of manual planning techniques. As a result, there is an increased demand for quality output from the computerized mine planning system the division has been developing over the last few years. A new workstation comprising the Hewlett Packard HP 71 51100 MHz and a CRX graphics monitor was acquired in 1995 together with the LYNX (version 3.09 and version 4.0) Mine Modelling System. Currently the workstation is being used for geological modelling and mine design for the Zerofold at Central Shaft and the Mindola mining at depth project. AutoCAD and Mine Works Planner have been added to the sys- tem configuration. Mine Works Planner is likely to replace Lo- tus123 for mine scheduling tasks. Computer applications in the area of mine planning at Nkana has led to considerable time savings and improved efficiency in areas formerly performed manually and has allowed speedy processing of data that would otherwise have proved too time consuming. Nevertheless, a lot of work still needs to be done in the areas of geostatistics, stope design and financial modelling of mining options. For the foreseeable future computer based planning will operate parallel to manual methods until such a time as sufficient personnel are proficient in the use of computer systems. This paper describes the program of computerization at Nkana Division, reviews current applications and the benefits and experience gained and discusses the promise of current and future developments.

Most of the siliceous rocks of the Arkansas Novaculite are novaculite, but they also include some chert, siliceous shale and, rarely, sandstone. Novaculite is defined as a homogeneous mostly white or light-colored rock, translucent on thin edges, with a dull to waxy Juster, and comprised almost entirely of microcrystalline quartz. The most plausible theory of origin for novaculite is that primary silica from submarine volcanism was picked up by organisms and deposited as amorphous silica, which was subsequently converted to microcrystalline quartz (novaculite) through diagenesis. The Arkansas Novaculite crops out over an east-west distance of 200 miles in the Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. Three divisions of the formation have been defined: a Lower Division, almost entirely massive light-colored novaculite; a Middle Division of interbedded dark chert and shale; and an Upper Division of massive calcareous novaculite. The Lower Division and most of the Middle Division are Devonian in age, and the remainder of the Middle Division and all of the Upper Division are Mississippian. The massive novaculites of the Upper and Lower Division attain their maximum development along the southern and central outcrop belts of the formation in Arkansas, and it is these rocks that are the source of current silica production. The calcareous novaculite of the Upper Division weathers readily to a light-colored, porous, less brittle rock, and in places to tripoli deposits. Currently tripoli is mined from a single deposit near. Hot Springs, Arkansas, and the rock is processed for highly specialized filler and abrasive applications. In the vicinity of Hot Springs, Arkansas, certain novaculite layers from the Lower Division with unique textural characteristics are quarried and processed into whetstones. Several small quarries produce this rock for two local and one out-of-state whetstone-fabricating plants. Chemical analyses of composite samples of novaculite from both the Upper and Lower Divisions taken at widely separated localities average 99 percent SiOz indicating a substantial resource of high-silica rock.

Two rare evaporite minerals, nahcolite (NaHC03) and trona (Na2C03?NaHC03?2H20), are both widely used in the production of sodium carbonate (Na2CO3) The largest natural carbonate deposits (trona) are in Wyoming, USA, the second largest deposits are in Turkey, in a lacustrine basin (Beypazari) where nahcolite and trona are located within the Miocene Hirka Formation. The Hirka Formation is mainly composed of bituminous shale, claystone, marlstone, tuffltuffite, and dolomitic limestones. Although numerous trona beds are interbedded within the above mentioned sedimentary units, there are only two beds of trona that are of economic interest. The lower part of the lower trona bed is rich in double carbonates such as pirrsonite (NA2C03? CaC03?2H20) and gaylussite (Na2C03?CaC03?5H20), indicating a change in Ca/Na ratio in the solutions which are responsible for the formation of soda occurrences. In contrast, the upper part of the upper trona bed is rich in nahcolite. This minerological pattern has been found in every drill- hole in the basin. While both trona beds average up to 10 m (33 ft) thick, the average thickness of nahcolite is approximately 0.5 m (1.6 ft). Also, thin section studies show that many fibrous and lath-like trona crystals contain small radial nahcolite crystals; all of them are euhedral and equi-dimensional. Geochemical studies of major, minor, and trace element contents also support this coexistence. Macroscopic and microscopic observations reveal that the nahcolites principally were formed as a result of an incongruent dissolution process of trona. In conclusion, the presence of nahcolite in the Beypazari basin is due to the dissolution process of trona, particularly during the last stage of evaporation, as a result of fresh water entering the basin. During that time, an increase in the HC03/ C03 ratio resulted in nahcolite-trona phase transitions.

Specialty sand and bentonite are produced in the plateau province from the Bidahochi Formation near Sanders, Apache County, Arizona. It appears that deposits of both sand and bentonite formed during the Pliocene in fluvial and lacustrine environments, respectively, along the west side of the Defiance Uplift. The bentonite is an alteration product of airborne vitric ash that fell or was washed into lakes. In the Cheto district, the individual bentonite horizons, which range from less than a foot to more than 10 feet thick, are restricted to the position of the medial volcanic member. Bentonite production began at the Allentown mine in 1924 and the Chambers mine in 1926. In 1933 strip mining of the extensive deposits in the Cheto district commenced. Production increased each year to a peak of 270,000 tons in 1957. As a result of the introduction of synthetic zeolites into petroleum refining, production declined. About 40,000 tons of bentonite are currently produced from the district each year. Bentonite is shipped out of State for processing into desiccants, thickeners, and acid-activated clay products. The specialty sand was derived from Permian sandstones and deposited by streams draining the Defiance Uplift. Although stream channels are usually restricted to the upper member of the Bidahochi, stratigraphically above the bentonite horizon, a few actually cut through the bentonite. The well-sorted sand, suitable for use as a proppant in hydraulically fractured oil and gas wells, is localized in elongate lenses along the margins of the channels. These lenses range from 5 to 50 feet in thickness and often extend thousands of feet in both width and length. The sand is about 97 percent silica, has a yield of 40 percent in the minus 20 plus 40 mesh size fraction, and has a roundness of 0.6 to 0.7 on the Krumbein scale. Production of this sand began about 1961. All of the current production, which amounts to about 40,000 tons per year, is sold in the petroleum-producing area near Farmington, New Mexico.

The Bureau of Mines is conducting a research project in cooperation with the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA). Mining companies, and equipment manufacturers are also participating through the Colorado Mining Association (CMA). The objectives of this cooperative research project are to determine the practicality of coupling a dry exhaust conditioning system (dry system) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) to make an integrated control system, and to determine the effectiveness and durability of the integrated system in an underground coal mine. Diesel-powered mining machines must be equipped with control devices to reduce surface and exhaust temperatures to safe levels and prevent flames and sparks from being emitted to the mine atmosphere. Diesel exhaust-gas water scrubbers have been successfully used for many years but they have several disadvantages; they are large, consume large quantities of water, and require frequent maintenance to remain functional. Additionally, diesel exhaust is a source of noxious gases and particulate matter. Particulate emissions are composed primarily of small carbon particles with absorbed hydrocarbons and they are almost entirely respirable in size. Even an engine in good mechanical condition can emit up to 400 mg/cu m of respirable particulate matter. A dry system for control of diesel fire and explosion hazards, coupled to a DPF, promises to be a complete control system for diesel engines. The dry system cools the exhaust and suppresses sparks and flame with a heat exchanger and flame and spark traps. The conditioner is smaller, consumes no water, and requires less maintenance than a comparable water scrubber. The DPF uses a ceramic substrate as a wall-flow filter and is very efficient at collecting exhaust particles. Average particulate mass collection efficiency is 90%. This report describes a cooperative research project to combine the dry system with the DPF, conduct performance tests on the integrated system at Bureau and MSHA 1aboratory facilities, and conduct field tests of the system on a production machine in an underground coal mine.

The underground fire areas are formed as a result of failure of an active fire extinguishing in mines. Such areas bring about a fire hazard for the work safety and for the mining operations. For liquidation of fire areas it is necessary to create conditions under which a possibly small amount of air is flowing to the fire. To achieve this end, isolation methods are used which consist in erection of full stoppings of various types, sealing practically the fire areas. These methods usually fail in oases when the coal seam is thick and the fire area is situated between the intake shaft and the outtake shaft in which a high-pressure fan is in operation. In such oases ventilation methods based on the balance of aerodynamic potentials in fire areas are to be used. For a very long time the isolation and ventilation methods have been developed in the world mining, No sooner than since 1980 the aerodynamic potential has been used in ventilation methods [1,2,6]. So far, the aerodynamic potential was called in different ways and was determined by different formulae which gave its numerical values more or less approximative. Nevertheless, even in situations featuring by a lack of sufficient theoretical bases of the aerodynamic potential the ventilation methods brought considerable profits in the field of safety in mines and of economics in mine ventilation [1-6,9,10]. The increase in the depth of underground mines and their equipment with expensive machines (apparatus) brought about that the Central Mining Institute at Katowice undertook research works which are crowned by the theory of the aerodynamic potential in mine ventilation networks [7]. The use of this theory in the mentioned ventilation methods will increase their effectiveness. Since the theory will be published in the III rd quarter of this year, we cite in the present paper the formulae and relations associated with this theory which are indispensable to present the balance of aerodynamic potentials in the fire areas in their control by ventilation methods.

Longwall workings in the Federal Republic of Germany are situated in deep depths. Coal deposits are characterized by a sequence of many seams and manifold geological disturbances. Hence result special requirements on the layout of workings, the methods of coal getting, supports, mine ventilation and dust control. As for the application of dust control the large quantities of fresh air and, this, the high air velocity and the limited water contents in the run-of--mine coal must be taken into consideration. The principle of our methods of dust control is to avoid, if at all possible, the development of dust and, if this is not possible, to suppress the dust even during its development. In nearly all coal faces, the method of water infusion prescribed by our Mines Inspectorates is applied. Continuous water in- fusion is preferred. For water infusion in the coal face, intensive developments as to the process and as to the tools and apparates to be applied were done. The German coal mining industry differs between cutting coal getting and stripping coal getting. Water spraying to the tracks of coal ploughs as well as internal and external water feed to the loader required special activities of further development in past years. There are possibilities to still improve such methods in future. A new important field of applying dust control developed from the application of powered supports. In this field, water spraying prevails. Wet methods of dust control are prefered also in the conveying and loading of coal and at through-flow crushers, however, as far as possible, combined with a covering of the working points where dust develops. Devices for the collection and sedimentation of dust, so-called dust exhausters, are used also with crushers In advanced headings, dust control is performed solely by water. Gateroads kept on or behind the coal face line call for new methods of dust control which are at present under development.

INTRODUCTION As the experience in Canada indicates, it is becoming more and more common to evaluate major mining projects, especially those relating to uranium, with respect to their environmental effects. As part of this evaluation public hearings are becoming the rule rather than the exception. In this area the 1970's and presumably the 1980's can be characterized as the age of "Environmental Assessments" or "Environmental Impact Statements" which form the basis of these hearings. These documents tend to require significant amounts of research, data collection and effort in their preparation, and tend to be closely scrutinized by the hearing body and by groups in opposition to the project. This opposition is becoming more organized and sophisticated. The assessment or impact document, together with the evidence supporting it during the hearings can: (a) mean the difference between a lengthy and hence costly hearing and a smoother, shorter and less expensive one, (b) result in requirements for extensive modification at the expense of the proponent to his project, (c) result in the proponent being required to carry out extensive studies, research or monitoring programs, and (d) conceivably may in certain situations result in the project actually being turned down. Therefore, while on the one hand it is important to have available technical answers to concerns relating to uranium, its associated and perceived hazards, it is getting more and more important to be able to present these answers in both a written and oral format in such a way as to meet the criticism and concerns of the opposition, be they citizens in general or special interest groups including environmental lobbyists. INTRODUCTION The process of solid-liquid separation can be an important decision in plant design. It is very important that one must consider not only the most effective means of solids-liquid separation, but also to consider the effects on upstream and downstream processes. A solid-liquid separation is done either to remove the solids £ran the liquids as in copper concentrates or rave a liquid from the solids as in uranium operations. In either case, washing can be an important consideration to clean the solids or recover the liquids. This section will deal with solid- liquid separation other than thermal, sedimntation processes, or hydro cyclones. The three major areas discussed are pressure filters, vacuum filters, and centrifuges that are most cannon in the minerals industry. PRESSURE FILTERS Pressure filters are one common type of solid-liquid dewatering devices. There are my different types of pressure filters that are both continuous and batch operations. They are characterized by using an external pressure to push or force the slurry through porous media to force the liquids out of the solids. Whereas vacuum filters are limited to one amsphere or bar working pressure, some types of pressure filters operate as high as 16 bars pressure. Pressure filters are also effective for hot slurries where a high boiling point can be a problem or precipitation occurs under vacuum. The types of pressure filters most common in the mineral processing industry include plate and frame and recessed plate filters. Some of the new technologies including automatic pres- sure filters and belt presses are also discussed. Plate Frame Filters Plate and frame filters are one of the oldest and most effective means of both dewatering solids and clarifying liquids. Plate and frame filters consist of a skeleton that is used to hang or support alternate plates and frames that are pressed together to form chambers. The objective of this chapter is to provide data that will assist in the selection and sizing of equipment utilized in the filtration method of separating solids from liquids. It should be recognized at the outset that in some situations more than one option may be available to achieve the target desired. Tile Asheville Minerals Research Laboratory is a member of the Engineering Research Department of North Carolina State University. The Laboratory is engaged mainly in applied nonmetallic mineral processing research to assist the North Carolina mining industry. A few out of state projects are handled at times. The Laboratory helped to bring the flotation process to North Carolina feldspar, spodumene, mica and phosphate producers and maintains versatile batch and pilot plant facilities at Asheville. It is of interest that North Carolina has now one of the newest and largest flotation plants at Lee Creek where Texas Gulf Sulphur Company produces 10,000 tons of phosphate concentrate per day, and one of the smallest flotation plants at Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company's fiberglass plant in Shelby, North Carolina where $50,000 per year of platinum-rhodium metal is reclaimed from wasted fiberglass furnace refractories in a tiny flotation operation of pilot plant size. The conservation of mineral resources through improved processing methods has been the object of most of the Laboratory's projects. This work has been extremely interesting and rewarding in many instances. Or, the example of projects for Kings Mountain Mica Company it will be demonstrated how waste could be reduced step by step from 20 tons of waste per ton of product to LO tons of product per ton of waste by improved processing methods. Brick, high grade potash feldspar, and silica sand are now produced from formerly wasted materials. AL this time Laboratory work sponsored by three feldspar companies, the State of North Carolina, and the U. S. Bureau of Mines, is aimed at reducing the amounts of feldspar tailings in the Spruce Pine area. Mineral dressing techniques are applied to reclaim saleable mineral products such as feldspar, mica quartz, and to make more uniform material for possible ceramic and other applications. Processes to produce new products such as sand-lime brick, and lightweight foamed autoclaved calcium silicate building products will be tested.

"INTRODUCTION The Bulk Handling Technology has suffered an important development in the recent years, allowing the use of conveyor belts in the most important and critical applications. As a consequence of this, the reliability and lasting performance of the conveyor belt components is becoming more and more significant, thus the implementation of preventive maintenance programs is a must. The rollers are one of the consumables in the conveyor belts, which have to be changed once arrived to the end of life. The actual ways of detecting this moment always require intensive use of labour and they are not very accurate. Indeed, if the rollers get broken before replacement, the consequences could be very important, generating additional costs and operational losses. The R&D Department of ULMA Conveyor Components, has been working since early 2012 on the development of Monitored Rollers along with a Management Software to provide users the capacity to Manage and Monitor the rollers from its desk, getting continuous online information on the internal temperature of the bearings, on the working status of the rollers as well as the identification of the rollers close to their end of life so that they could be changed during the next maintenance stop of the conveyor belt. In short, a system of Preventive Maintenance for Conveyor Belt Rollers BACKGROUND AND CURRENT STATE The malfunction of a single roller in certain conveyor belts can suppose the standstill of the whole installation until its replacement, due to the risk of greater and more expensive failures like the rip of the belt. In the case of a bulk handling installation where a continuous supply of material is necessary, a bare stop of one hour could entail huge economical losses. What’s more, many conveyor belts are several kilometers length or the access to some parts of them is very complicated. Due to these difficulties the inspection and maintenance operations can become expensive and hard going, with staff going over the whole area checking the correct condition of the conveyor and rollers, which means a dangerous activity. In addition, it’s quite common to find rollers working in very harsh conditions, completely exposed to the elements or working in corrosive closed environments like underground mines. These tough working conditions together with the very demanding features of Bulk Handling sector (high loads, speed, dangerous materials etc.) can bring the unexpected failure of a roller, even being designed to support them. Thus, to have the working conditions of the rollers real time is clearly required, in order to achieve an actual predictive maintenance of the system and avoid fatal failures. Nowadays the most common procedures to identify a broken roller is to hear how it sounds or use thermo-graphic cameras to measure their internal temperature, both of them implying workers inspecting the whole length of the conveyor while the conveyor is running. This means intense use of workmanship and operational safety level reduction."

"Modeling and Simulation of SAG Mill has been widely used in design and optimization of mill performance in terms of its power draw, processing capacity and product size distribution. However, these models are solved under steady approximation and do not provide any information on mill charge distribution in real time. This paper attempts to characterize mill contents by solving Whiten’s first order contents based model in Matlab/Simulink environment. The parameters in the model such as breakage rate (S), discharge rate (D) and appearance function (A) were estimated utilizing process and design data collected from a gold mine operating in Alaska coupled with nonlinear parameter estimation scheme. This model is then utilized to predict dynamic response of other key operational variables such as mill power, bearing pressure, charge level and product size distribution. The transient response of mill behavior with respect to changes in feed size distribution, tonnage and mill feed water is also presented. This dynamic simulation approach can be used for practicing different control strategy and training purposes. The observed response of mentioned variables was validated utilizing dynamic response data from the plant to encompass operational characteristics of SAG Mill behavior. INTRODUCTION Grinding in mineral industry is one the most important steps in the process of size reduction and plays a crucial role in determining the overall economics of the milling plant. Much of the efforts focused on improving the process efficiency using modeling and simulation have been practiced by researcher and engineers. However, up till now these models were simulated under steady state approximation because of their complex nature and difficulty in programming them in a dynamic framework. Steady state simulations have been successfully utilized in circuit designing, capacity planning and pre-flowsheet optimization. The maturity in steady state models is because of its applicability and regular use in steady state simulation packages such as JKSimMet, Limn, ModSim, etc. With the advent of equipment such as SAG and AG mill has been a recent shift in the simulating these models using dynamic approach. Because of the economic benefits of these devices and ability to act both as a primary grinding device and as secondary or tertiary crushing device they have gained a large popularity and are now universal to any milling plant. However, these device poses a real challenge to engineers and researchers in terms of operation and control. The major reason attributed to problems faced is because the ore constitutes the major portion of the charge in these devices when compared to ball and rod mill. This rock charge is subjected to disturbance such as changes in feed size distribution and ore hardness which results in unstable operation and frequent mill stoppages. One way to prevent this is to measure and control these external variables, however, lack of available instrumentation and unavailability of sensors to measure these variables has foiled the understanding of complete process occurring inside the mill thereby, inhibiting development of proper control system."

"Signs in underground mines are subject to variable airflow, which carries dust and moisture. Dust buildup reduces their visibility, hampering production efficiency and safety. Underground workers commonly must stop to clean signs in order to gauge their location, or find critical supplies or services. There are currently a variety of coating products, including dust and water repellants, available on the market that have the potential to reduce dust accumulation on sign surfaces. This paper describes a preliminary study to determine their effectiveness. The study involved a practical testing protocol using a trickle rock duster and samples cut from a clean, used road sign. Product effectiveness, under both dry and wet conditions, was evaluated based on photographic evidence by comparing changes in sign luminosity after a period of rock dust application. By analyzing the frequency of different pixel luminosities on the dust-covered samples, both uniformity of dust coverage and the total amount of accumulation was assessed. Results indicate that at least one product may reduce the amount of dust buildup on sign surfaces and increase visibility. INTRODUCTION In all underground mines, visibility of signage is critical. Signs inform miners of their location, direction toward escape routes, and location of supplies. Over time, sign surfaces can collect dust and can eventually become unreadable. The rate of dust accumulation on surfaces is often particularly high in coal mines, where both mining (e.g., cutting and drilling) and rock dusting activities can contribute significant amounts of dust to the airways. Several factors may contribute to dust buildup on sign surfaces. First, basic principles of fluid and particle flow are at play. When a fluid travels past a stationary surface, the velocity of the fluid at the surface boundary is zero. If a very small dust particle moving with air collides with a surface, it does not immediately fall off since the air velocity is zero at the sign surface. (This is the same reason that dust can collect on a rotating ceiling fan.) Further, once the collision occurs, other mechanisms may help keep the particle there – including friction that resists particle falling due to gravity, and adhesive forces due to humidity and/or static charges the particle and others already on the surface. Currently, the most common way to deal with reduced sign visibility due to dust buildup is for mine personnel (e.g., a compliance foreman, supply worker) to periodically clean sign surfaces – usually just by wiping them with a cloth. As a regular activity, this solution is inefficient; in cases of emergencies, it can also pose unnecessary risks. Application of an off-the-shelf coating to sign surfaces may represent a simple yet effective way to reduce the rate of dust accumulation. There are currently a variety of products on the market that may be suitable for this purpose, including dust and water repellants."

The metals industry is in complete chaos with mines being shut down, profits becoming non-existent, and continual losses to imports from other countries. Yet the raw material supplier to the glass industry has many opportunities to grow and to produce profits. Fortunately, the cost of most glass raw materials are low enough that competition from imports is not anywhere as critical as it is in the metal industries, such as copper, aluminum, lead, and others. But the glass raw material supplier must develop new products, both chemically and physically, to effectively compete in the future. The purpose of this paper is to point out generally where these opportunities exist and to suggest how they may be further developed. As the glass industry looks for energy saving materials, they look once again towards finer materials. A glass furnace is now approximately 40% efficient. Glass engineers are constantly striving for energy savings and it is well known that finer materials melt easier so that the manufacturer can operate his furnace either at lower temperatures for the same production or he can produce more material at the same temperature. The old 20 mesh sand specification is no longer sacred and as the mesh size for sand changes so do the specifications for all other raw materials used in the melting process. Highly instrumented glass furnaces can now measure quite accurately the energy needs to produce glass and can also measure the energy loss in each furnace. Glass technologists desire today a sand with a top size of 40 mesh while some would like to have the top at 60 mesh. This becomes more difficult to accomplish as a raw material supplier without .grinding. As you well know, grinding develops fines. Yet the same technologists will tell us that we can have nothing passing a 140 mesh screen. Therefore, we must develop processes which allows us to produce a finer screen size without increasing the amount of fines passing through the 140 mesh screen. To counteract this, different and changing industries are now demanding much finer products so possibly there will be markets for the fines which are currently separated out of the products. Methods that are practical and low cost must be found to develop different products with different screen specifications. What works for sand can be carried over to the other raw materials used in melting. Among the answers to finer products, of course, are pellets. Aglomeration or pelletizing has been looked at in the past and will be looked at in the future. Considerable work has been done in the glass container industry on this and must be carried out more extensively. By using aglomerated material or pellets, the glass producer will gain the benefits of melting fine materials without suffering from handling or dust problems. Pelletizing, particularly where using basic glass melting materials such as burned lime or sodium silicate, will not only produce a good pellets but will add desirable minerals to the glass batch.

The LaModel program is widely used to calculate stresses and displacements on thin tabular deposits, particularly when multiple seams or complex mining geometry is encountered. The program itself allows the user to create multiple mining steps to show a progressive sequence of mining. However, LaModel considers each individual step as an independent steady-state condition, and any previous loading conditions of the materials are not tracked. It also does not consider any sort of dynamic stress change during the mining process. In certain circumstances, especially in multiple-seam situations, modeling a scenario of the seam of interest without considering the previous mining sequence in the off seams can potentially lead to inaccurate results. The primary objective of this paper is to present a situation where a potentially dynamic, unstable mining condition was encountered. It was not evident until the previous loading conditions in the off seams and the impact of dynamic stress changes in the active seam were considered. It is important to make the mining community aware of these potential modeling scenarios where the path-dependent nature of the mining sequence is of key importance. This paper presents a case history where room-and-pillar retreat mining was being conducted in a relatively deep cover stress regime where multiple seam interactions were present from both undermining and overmining. Mining in the active seam was being conducted with roomand- pillar mining techniques consisting of a series of parallel production panels being successively developed and retreat mined along a set of Mains. In this situation, the traditional global LaModel analysis without any path-dependent adjustments did not fully identify the area of poor conditions that were encountered. This paper explores the impacts of mining in the active seam on the lower seam which, in turn, has a negative impact on the active seam. This provided a solid foundation for the subsequent analysis of the three seams simultaneously. Based on the calibrated model, it is likely that retreat mining in the active seam resulted in increased stresses in the underlying seam that conceivably resulted in additional convergence and, most likely, additionally convergence of the pillars under the panel being developed. This in turn could have caused active subsid- The LaModel program is extremely useful for analyzing multiple-seam mining scenarios. As multiple-seam situations become even more prevalent, the potential for encountering a path-dependent mining scenario also increases. To successfully model path-dependent mining scenarios, the ground control engineer will be required to make sound judgments on the condition of pillars in sub-adjacent seams. These engineering judgments should be based not only on the current state of stress, but also on any prior or future states of stress. This means considering the stresses from over or undermining as well as stresses applied to the sub-adjacent seams from actively mining the seam of interest.

With the content of gold and platinum in the vast majority of ore deposits typically averaging 6 parts per million and less, the accurate and precise measurement of these metals in samples of ore and mining process streams has proven very difficult to achieve by modem spectroscopic analytical techniques. Largely because no other technique has proven suitable, the basic fire assay process has become the accepted international standard for these metals. Fire assay, however, suffers a number of disadvan­tages in the modem, competitive, high technology, and increas­ingly environmentally aware world. It is a labour intensive technique that is difficult to automate, and requires high levels of skill to ensure accuracy and consistency of results. Potentially hazardous chemical reagents are employed, of which, lead, in particular, can be a serious source of contamination to both personnel and the environment if not effectively controlled. Other dangerous elements, such as mercury and arsenic, liberated in high energy furnace operations, are further sources of possible health and pollution hazards. n contrast, the energy dispersive K X-ray fluorescence (K­XRF) technique devised by K X Technology Ltd overcomes many of the technical constraints of conventional low energy X­ray analysis, and has the potential to revolutionise assay opera­tions in precious metal mining. The technology is simply automated, requires basic operator skills, uses no chemicals, consumes less than 20kW, and is capable of detecting gold and platinum to an accuracy of O .1 parts per million by mass. The new third generation design of AZTEC laboratory instrument, released in 1994, is the result of significant technical development. Capable of analysing over 1200 samples per day, and developed primarily for grade control sampling, its applica­tions have spread to gold ore accounting from on-line conveyor belt sampling; screening of exploration samples; measurement of gold in carbon granules for Carbon-in-Pulp process control; and for conducting rapid checks to support key managemen decisions. The economic, rapid, and non destructive analysis ofup to 80g of ore for large numbers of samples, reduces sampling and sub-sampling errors, and provides improved grade estimates for ore bodies. When interfaced to a LIMS, laboratory automation and cost-savings can be further enhanced. The AZTEC design is also being modified for the analysis of platinum. The GOLDSTREAM on-line analysis system is an important new application of K-XRF to the continuous monitoring of process streams in gold ( or platinum) plants and mills. Integrat­ing the technologies of K-XRF to measure total gold, and dissolved gold spectroscopy to measure gold in solution, the insoluble fraction of gold can be deduced, and the effectiveness of the extraction process determined. Slurries are sampled automatically from selected points of the plant and pumped to the system for analysis. The information produced forms the basis for plant control and optimisation.

[INTRODUCTION] The significance of gamma exposure to uranium miners has been recognized only in the last few years. Most ore deposits which have been underground mined, were 1% or less U308. Full-time mining of this grade ore can result in exposure exceeding 1 Rem per year. Several companies in Saskatchewan are planning to mine recently discovered ore bodies which contain ore pods in excess of 10% U308. The purpose of this paper is to present dose data which can be used to estimate gamma exposure from high-grade ore deposits, and to present mining techniques which will minimize miner exposure. [Dose Estimates] When one has a point source of radiation, the conventional laws of isotropic emission and the fall of dose with square of the distance, make dose calculations relatively easy. However, if one has an area source of infinite thickness, the assumption must be made that a uniform gamma flux is being emitted from all faces of the source (Figure 1). Dose from gamma emission would fall off only due to air attenuation up to such a distance at which the source can be considered to be a point source (usually 10 times the largest dimension of the source). For short distances, such as to the cab of ore-moving equipment, the dose reduction would be negligible. Assumptions: 1) Radium and gamma-emitting daughters are in secular equilibrium with uranium. 2) All gamma radiation is emitted from radium and its daughters. 3) Average gamma energy of 0.8 MeV. 4) Uranium ore has a linear attenuation coefficient of 0.212 cm-1, similar to that of Si02(sand). 5) Uranium ore density of 3.0 gm/cm3. 6) One curie of radium emits 6.84 x 1010 photon/sec(l). 7) One percent uranium ore contains 1 x 10-8 Ci/cm3 of radium. 8) Each MeV of 0.8 MeV photon results in a dose of 2.10[ ]10-3 mRem/hr. per MeV/cm2 -sec. 1) 9) Minimum ore depth 100 cm. 10) Linear attenuation coefficient instant for radium gamma of 0.374 cm -1 [ ] The photon flux from a radioactive slab is computed as follows: [Flux = photon/cm3 3(1) 2u S] [where, us is the linear absorption coefficient of s the source (uranium ore).] Thus, 1% uranium ore, in the form of an infinite slab, emits 1613 photon/cm2-sec, which results in a dose rate of 2.71 mRem/hr. 9.1-CLASSIFICATION OF MINERAL DEPOSITS AND ROCK MATERIALS After a mineral deposit has been discovered, delineated and evaluated, the next step is to select a mining method that is physically, economically and environ- mentally adaptable to recovering the mineral from the deposit. The term "mineral deposit" is used to denote a concentration of mineral (including rock and coal). Even where there is considerable past experience available, many of the critical design criteria must be determined utilizing only information obtained from an examination of exploratory drill core specimens. The factors that affect this selection are as follows: (1) the spatial characteristics of the deposit (size, shape, attitude and depth); (2) the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral deposit and surrounding rock; (3) ground water and hydraulic conditions; (4) economic factors, including grade of the ore. comparative mining costs and desired production rates; and (5) environmental factors, such as the preservation of the surface overlying the mine, and the prevention of air and water pollutants. Of these factors, the spatial characteristics of the deposit and the physical (or mechanical) properties of the mineral and surrounding rock limit the methods that can be employed to mine it. Six types of mineral deposits are recognized, as follows: 1. Massive-A deposit of considerable lateral and vertical extent in which mineralization (or ore) is relatively uniformly distributed. Disseminated copper ores are typical deposits. Dome salt also is included in this classification. 2. Bedded or Tabular-A mineral deposit that parallels the stratification, most often in sedimentary rock, usually laterally extensive, and of limited thickness. Most coal measures and some evaporite mineral deposits (e.g., potash) fall in this class. 3. Narrow Vein-A zone or belt of mineralization (ore) typically long, narrow (less than 10 ft), often dipping steeply, and usually lying within boundaries separating it from neigh- boring rock. Many gold and other metallic minerals occur in narrow veins. 4. Wide Vein-As defined under narrow vein except that the vein thickness is greater than 10 ft. 5. Lentictclar or Pocket-An isolated ore body, or an enrichment of limited vertical and horizontal extent in a massive, bedded or vein deposit. Lead, zinc and iron ores often occur in this type of deposit. 6. Placer-A surface or near-surface deposit, usually tabular and may be of consider- able areal extent, containing mineral particles (e.g., gold, platinum) in detritus (e.g., sand, gravel). The rock materials associated with mineral deposits are classified as follows: 1. Detritus-Sediments and other accumulations of solid particles produced by the mechanical and/or chemical disintegration of rocks, and usually having a low cohesive strength and very low compressive strength (e.g.. soil, sand, gravel, alluvium, playa). 2. Jointed and Fractured-Unbonded-A rock mass, often occurring on or near the surface or in fault zones, in which the joints or fractures contain alteration or decomposition
