The complexity of surface mining operations is increasing as attention is directed towards mining larger tracts of lower grade, higher cost deposits. Large tonnage requirements from these mines necessitate utilization of many large pieces of equipment. This equipment must be utilized efficiently, with production maintained at or near designed capacities. Basically, the problem is to select, size, and schedule equipment to maximize profits and minimize adverse environmental impacts (Anon., 1977). The time, manpower, and cost limitations required to analyze a wide variety of situations and alternatives in planning surface mines have been sidestepped with the application of simulation methods using a digital computer. Since a simulator can be programmed to represent the situations which are to be analyzed, many alternatives can be evaluated in a relatively short time. Input variables are easily changed and the resulting changes which take place in the system can be analyzed. When standard methods of analyses are applied, weeks and many man-hours are involved in analyzing large-scale mining operations. At the same time many simplifying assumptions must be made since these operations are dynamic and transient. Hence, it becomes difficult to make sound engineering decisions and take proper and timely corrective action in the absence of simulation methods. This chapter is concerned with the application of one such method, namely, the open-pit materials handling simulator (OPMHS) developed by the Mining Engineering Section, The Pennsylvania State University (Manula, Albert, and Ramani, 1977).

INTRODUCTION Iron is the world's most widely used metal and constitutes about 5% of the earth's crust. Iron ores are found widely distributed throughout the world. Because of its wide occurrence and relatively low value, an iron ore to be merchantable must contain a relatively high percentage of the metal to be considered as a source of iron. Few ores containing less than 25% iron would be considered as ore unless they existed in large amounts and could be concentrated very cheaply. The grade of the ore, the ease of concentration, and the transportation cost to market are fundamental considerations deter- mining its worth. Iron never occurs as a natural metal except in meteorites. Most iron ores occur as oxides, and to a lesser degree as carbonates. A small amount is recovered as a byproduct from iron sulfides. Iron ore must be reduced (oxygen removed) to metal for use. Iron is marketed in many forms and combinations, such as pig iron and a great variety of steels. Iron is practically never pure as marketed but contains varying amounts of carbon, phosphorus, sulfur, and alloying elements such as nickel, chromium, etc., all of which affect the physical proper- ties of the end product. Please note that in this section all analyses ore on a dry basis and all tonnage figures are on a long-ton basis of 2,240 lb unless otherwise noted.

Few, if any, of the non-ionizing radiation health hazards to be found in either surface or underground coal mining are uniquely different because of their being found in the work environment. Hence, they can be considered generally for their bio-effects on the worker when found in the mining work environment. The same may not be said, however, for the lack of non-ionizing radiation and its bio-effects, particularly as it relates to underground coal mining. The term "non-ionizing radiation" refers to various forms of electromagnetic radiation of wavelengths longer than those of ionizing radiation. As the wavelength gets longer the energy of electromagnetic radiation decreases. Therefore, all non-ionizing forms of radiation have less energy than cosmic, gamma, and X-radiation. In order of increasing wavelength, non-ionizing radiation includes ultraviolet, visible light, infrared, microwave, and radiofrequency radiations. The energy frequency and wavelength range of both the ionizing and non-ionizing electromagnetic forces are shown in Table I. To convert the wavelengths of various radiations to Ångström units, one multiplies millimicrons by ten. In a vacuum, all electromagnetic radiation has the same velocity, namely 3 x 1010 centimeters per second. The natural source of radiant energy here on earth is our sun which emits radiation continuously over a wide spectrum. This radiation on average reaching earth ranges from 290 nm in the ultraviolet range to over 2,000 nm in the infrared range with a maximum intensity of about 480 nm in the visual range. You will note this falls into the visible blue wavelength and accounts for our blue sky and blue ocean and deep water effects. We are all familiar with the fact that the passage of solar radiation through the atmosphere to the earth changes the spectrum considerably because the atmosphere absorbs and scatters many of the sun's rays. The ozone in the upper atmosphere absorbs the shorter ultraviolet wavelengths and water vapor absorbs some of the infrared wavelengths. Smoke, dust particles, gas molecules and water droplets scatter the rays, especially those of shorter wavelengths. In addition to the sun, every gas, liquid or solid object at a temperature above absolute 0° radiates energy. Solid objects emit almost continuous spectra. At low temperatures only radiation of the longer wavelengths in the infrared range is emitted, but as the temperature of the object is increased, more and more of the shorter wavelengths are added. This fact is most readily demonstrated by heating a piece of steel. When a piece of steel reaches a temperature of about 1,700° Fahrenheit, it gives off radiation at the red end of the visible spectrum and appears dull red. As the temperature is further increased, the shorter rays are also emitted, until at about 2,100°F, the metal appears white, due to the emission of wavelengths throughout the entire visible range. Gasses, on the other hand, when heated emit radiant energy only at certain wavelengths, which are characteristic of their chemical structure. This latter fact is of importance in underground coal mining as high intensity gas and vapor lamps are becoming more and more utilized for illumination in underground coal mining. The biologic effect of non-ionizing radiation exposure depends upon the type and duration of exposure and on the amount of absorption by the miner. The effects of this radiant energy on the miner fall into four distinct types: (1) the heating effect of infrared radiation, (2) the effect on the eye of visible radiation, (3) the effects of ultraviolet radiation, and (4) the growing potential effects of the misuse of microwave radiation. Each non-ionizing type of radiation will be considered individually. ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION The sun is the major source of ultraviolet radiation, which is of concern in open pit and surface mining at certain seasons and in certain climes necessitating protection for the surface miners under those conditions; nonetheless, there are some man-made sources such as electric arc lights, welding arcs, plasma jets, and special ultraviolet bulbs for illumination underground that demand surveillance in the underground environment to be aware of whether the miners are at risk above the threshold limit values allowable. Since ultraviolet radiation has little penetrating power, the organs that are affected are the skin and the eyes. Ultraviolet radiation is strongly absorbed by nucleic acids and proteins, and the effects in man are largely chemical rather than thermal. Short-term effects on miners include acute changes in the skin. These are of four types: (a) darkening of pigment, (b) erythema (sunburn), (c) increase in pigmentation (tanning) and (d) changes in cell growth. Ultraviolet radiation also causes acute effects on the tissues of the eye. Overexposure can lead to keratitis, inflammation of the cornea, and conjunctivitis. Long-term effects of ultraviolet exposure include an increase in the rate of ageing of the skin with degeneration of skin tissue and a decrease in elasticity. Late effects of ultraviolet on the eye include the development of cataracts. The most serious chronic effect of ultraviolet exposure is skin cancer. Ultraviolet radiation effects are increased by some industrial materials and drugs. After exposure to such compounds as cresols, the skin is exceptionally sensitive to ultraviolet radiation. Photosensitivity reactions occur after exposure to a variety of other chemicals and drugs including dyes, phenothiazines, sulfonamides, and sulfanylureas. The requirements of today's and tomorrow's markets led to a new generation of facilities which handles large tonnages annually, loading them into larger vessels, at higher rates, efficiently and reliably, with minimum labor input, and significantly greater attention to the environment. A great variety of products are handled, including various grades of metallurgical and steaming coal, coke, iron ore in its many forms, shapes and moisture content, phosphates and fertilizer products, bauxite and alumina ores, limestone, sugar and grains, cement and many other products. When we examine the annual tonnages involved in these movements the economic value of handling these products on a bulk basis can be readily seen. Although nearly all these products have been handled by continuous bulk conveyors for many years, recent governmental response to environmental concerns require a re-evaluation of previous procedures. Most air pollution and emission control regulations and ordinances have recognized several specific sources of pollution. Detailed regulations and requirements have been developed concerning smoke emissions, emissions of visible air contaminants and particulate matter from power plants, heating plants, refuse burning equipment, coke ovens, steel furnaces, kilns, and other industrial installations. Although fugitive dust is also an environmental pollutant it is governed by regulations that are more general and therefore, more difficult to apply. A general definition of a "fugitive particle" is any matter which escapes or becomes airborne from an operation or which is emitted into the atmosphere without passing or being conducted through a flue, pipe, stack or other structure designed for the purpose of emitting air pollutants into the atmosphere. This paper deals with the aspects of fugitive dust emissions as they apply to shiploading. Fugitive dust emissions control is important not only because of environmental regulations but also to prevent the loss of valuable product, reduce housekeeping, and reduce breakdown and maintenance problems to land and vessel equipment. "Understanding the influence of slurry particle size on wear is essential to maximising the life of centrifugal pumps operating in mineral processing plants and for hydrotransport duties. Particle size influences not only the wear rate but also the wear pattern in pumps. Complicating the situation is the different relative wear rate for different pump parts depending on particle size. A simple Slurry Wear Type (SWT) number based on particle size and size distribution is proposed as a means for categorising slurry pump wear patterns and optimising pump application and material selection. INTRODUCTION The wear of centrifugal slurry pumps in mineral processing and hydrotransport can be quite severe and is one of the major cost concerns of plant operators. Some typical worn slurry pump parts made from high chrome white iron are shown in Figure 1. Erosion wear rates of up to 2 mm/day are not uncommon [1].Centrifugal slurry pumps are required to handle solid-liquid mixtures with a very wide range of particles extending from sub-micron size clay through to 200mm and larger cobbles. Particle size distribution can also vary widely from uniform and narrow (such as graded sand) through to very broad (such as grinding circuit slurries). Slurry particles may also undergo size change due to attrition during the pumping process. The major wearing parts in a slurry pump are the impeller, side liners and casing liner. These are shown with reference to a Warman® MC centrifugal pump in Figure 2. While many particle properties (including size, shape, hardness, density and concentration) influence pump wear, this work will consider only the effect of particle size as it is the major determinant of wear characteristics. Particle size influences the wear pattern, material performance and relative component wear rate in centrifugal slurry pumps. Kaiser Steel Corporation, the pioneer steelmaker on the Pacific Coast, was founded by the late Henry J. Kaiser. In 1944 the Company purchased from the Southern Pacific Railroad an iron ore property 200 miles east of Los Angeles known as Eagle Mountain. Today the domestic operation of Kaiser Steel Corporation consists of the iron mine at Eagle Mountain; two coal mines, one each in Utah and New Mexico; an integrated steelmaking complex at Fontana, California; and several steel fabrication and erection facilities along the west coast. Kaiser Steel also has interest in Hamersley Iron, Ltd., Australia, and Kaiser Resources, Ltd., British Columbia. Eagle Mountain Mine is located about 80 miles east of Palm Springs and adjacent to the southeast corner of Joshua Tree National Monument. The area is one of the most arid in the world averaging only two inches of rain annually. Geologically, the mine is at the western edge of the Basin and Range Province which covers about one-half million square miles of the western United States. The Province is typified by north to northwesterly trending fault block mountain ranges separated by sediment filled valleys, Production has totaled over 82 million tons of finished products since the first shipment in June, 1947. Over 500 million tons of material have been mined from the deposit to date. Eagle Mountain Mine is noted for the pioneering use of the largest and most up to date equipment to mine and process its ore. In 1961 Eagle Mountain received the first fleet of 100-ton haulage trucks in the mining industry. There were thirteen semi-trailer units in the fleet. The first 12 to 17-yard size shovel in the mining industry was placed in operation at Eagle Mountain during 1962. Rotary drilling was introduced at Eagle Mountain in 1954 to replace churn drilling. Eagle Mountain was the first major mine to use metallized slurry when three aluminum slurries were introduced for primary blasting in 1962.

Greenbank Terotech is a member of the Halley & Mellowes Group of Companies and is accredited t AS3902. Greenbank has been involved within the wear resistant lining industry for over 20 years. Initially supplying cast Basalt piping systems through to the present day breakthroughs with SiTech cyclone linings. The challenge of finding the most cost effective cyclone lining has been a difficult process. Over the years many varieties of ceramics have come and gone. In particular within cyclone applications, many people have become disillusioned with the term "Ceramic." In practice, it was discovered that if a ceramic worked in one part of the plant, it did not necessarily work in the cyclone area. A good example of this is Alumina chute and pipe linings. An Alumina lined cyclone underflow bend would provide exceptional wear resistance, whereas an Alumina Spigot would have failed miserably. After Alumina's were tried, Silicon Carbides were experi­mented with. The results in many trials were mixed. What worked at one mine did not work at another. The results did not conclude decisively that ceramics were here to stay within the hard rock cyclone area. It was then that Greenbank Terotech started to look at the reason "Why do some linings work and others don't." We came to the conclusion that the matrix holding the particles together had to be the key to a successful cyclone material. At the time we looked at materials such as Alumina Bonded Silicon Carbides, Metallic (Aluminium) Bonded Silicon Carbide, 99% Alumina Ceramics and Nitride Bonded Silicon Carbides, but all these materials either suffered from chemical attack on the Aluminium matrix (via cyanide) or the matrix simply was not hard enough causing wear rates to be excessive. It was then we looked at SiTech. SiTech is a unique material in that the primary particles are Silicon Carbide, but the matrix is made up of a Secondary Silicon Carbide formed within the reaction bonding process.

The Pittsburgh Safety and Health Technology Center of the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) has developed the Mine Emergency Responsiveness Development (MERD) program to improve the reaction and re¬sponse of mine personnel in mine emergency situations. The MERD program simulates problems that may occur in underground mine fires and explosions or surface mine accidents. Since its inception in 1982, the MERD program has been presented to MSHA, industry, labor and state government personnel. This versatile program is easily adapted to suit various training requirements. In 1992, a Mine Simulation Laboratory was built at the Natinal Mine Health and Safety Academy, Beckley, WV, to improve training for mine emergencies and prevention and fighting of mine fires. This facility is capability of simulating a coal mine and metal-non-metal mine for training purposes. It has been included in the MERD program to provide realistic and practical training for mine rescue teams and MERD partici¬pants in advanced mine emergency operations. The objectives of the MERD program are to improve the organizational and management skills of the participants in a rescue and recovery operation and provide a better understanding of the importance that various roles have on the overall organization and the importance of their interaction. The MERD program is not intended to provide the participants with all of the abilities and knowledge required to respond effectively to a mine emergency. Rather, it is intended to give the participant an opportunity to experience the emotions, frustrations and successes of a mine emergency without having to actually be involved in one. The participants are expected to return to their regular jobs with a greater appreciation of the environment in which emergency operations take place. Experience in mine emergencies is extremely limited in the industry today. The participants are encouraged to use the knowledge gained during a MERD program to develop or enhance a mine emergency plan suitable to their needs.

Arch of Illinois is a mining complex comprised of two surface and two underground mines located in Perry County, in southern Illinois. The company a division of Apogee Coal Co. of St. Louis, MO. Arch of Illinois' two surface mines, the Captain and Horse Creek Mines, use large stripping shovels and cross-pit bucketwheel excavators to remove overburden from three seams of coal, the Herrin No. 6, Harrisburg No. 5 and Danville No. 7. All are considered high sulfur reserves. The two underground operations are managed by Arch of Illinois. They are the Kathleen Mine and the newly constructed Conant Mine, which began production in 1991. Both underground mines are continuous miner operations. They mine the No. 6 coal, which is about 1.8 m to 2.1 m (6 to 7 ft) thick. All coal is currently transported by truck to a central preparation plant located at the Captain Mine. This preparation plant produces 27 kt/d (30,000 stpd) of clean coal. Production in 1992 reached 5.9 Mt (6.5 million st) of saleable coal. Of that, about 66% or 4 Mt (4.4 million st) are produced by the surface mines and the rest the by under ground operations. Change is in the wind for Arch of Illinois. In 1988, 100% of all production (6.2 Mt or 6.9 million st) came from surface operations. By 1995, only 38% of production is scheduled from surface mines. And by the year 2000, 100% of production will from underground mining methods. Dwindling low ratio reserves, compounded by increasing environmental and land acquisition costs, coupled with more efficient underground mining equipment, have started an evolutionary trend toward development of underground reserves. For Arch of Illinois to maintain profitability of remaining surface reserves and to compete effectively mining underground, it must improve efficiency, productivity and cost reductions. These efforts are essential for maximizing current surface reserves and to ensure a continued existence in the presence of clean air legislation and the softening of the high sulfur coal market.

I commend the authors on examining an interesting method of shaft lining and attempting to improve safety in a dangerous environment by remotely installing the shaft lining. It is important, though, to not trade off shaft lining safety for long-term mine safety by lining an intake shaft with combustible material. In many operations, the mine utilities are installed next to the lining of the intake shaft, supplying a possible ignition source if damaged or overloaded. Although the polyurethane studied in the paper is of relatively high density, no mention is made of the flame retardency of the samples. When exposed to heat, small amounts of polyurethane will melt and bum but are extinguished when the heat source is removed. If large surface areas of combustible polyurethane - a tunnel or mine shaft- are exposed to ignition heat sources that are not removed or extinguished early, an uncontrollable, fuel rich fire may result with high carbon monoxide levels, low oxygen concentrations, and greatly increased burning rates that can have devastating effects on the ventilation system and miners' safety. Although these heavy polyurethanes lend themselves to a "pouring" application around the annulus of the shaft liners and is a continuous process, past experience with atomizing and frothing polyurethane spray systems indicates a high degree of maintenance and operator attention to the nozzle1 delivery system. This may require more miner's time to be spent in the shaft maintaining the foam system, negating some of the safety advantages of the system. If polyurethane foams are to be used in mines, they must be of the highest quality available in terms of flame spread, heat emitted while curing, and contaminants emitted while curing and spraying. In addition, employees must be given adequate training and be thoroughly informed in all aspects of polyurethane foam safety procedures. As witnessed by our fellow miners in South Africa, we can accept no less.

The Campbell gold operation of Placer Dome Inc. produces an arsenopyrite-sulfide concentrate that must be treated by roasting, biooxidation or pressure oxidation to obtain high gold recoveries. Pressure oxidation is a proven process that also meets Ontario's stringent environmental regulations. A comparison of biooxidation and pressure oxidation was completed early in 1990. Placer Dome selected pressure oxidation as the preferred process to replace the roaster. The commercial plant design was based on technology supplied by Sherritt Gordon. In July of 1991, the existing roaster operation was shut down and a new pressure oxidation plant was commissioned. The Campbell Red Lake Mine, in Balmertown in northwestern Ontario, is the first plant in Canada to use Sherritt Gordon's pressure oxidation technology to recover gold from a refractory ore body. A similar process has been used at Sao Bento in Brazil since 1986. The Porgera complex in Papua New Guinea also uses Sherritt's technology. At the Campbell Mine, gold occurs as either free gold or is encapsulated with sulfide minerals, mainly arsenopyrite, pyrite and pyrrhotite. These sulfide species are recovered from the ore by crushing and grinding to 80% -75. µm (200 mesh), followed by flotation. About 40% of the gold in the ore is recovered by gravity separation. The remainder reports to the ground slurry feed to flotation. The flotation concentrate averages about 55 to 60 t/d (60 to 66 stpd). A typical analysis is shown in Table 1. Before the installation of the pressure oxidation plant, the flotation concentrate was treated in a two-stage, fluid bed roasting circuit. Roaster off-gases passed through two parallel sets of cyclones, followed by electrostatic precipitators. Arsenic trioxide was captured in a four-chamber baghouse before the gas was discharged to a stack. The arsenic trioxide was sold or conveyed to an underground storage vault. The roasted calcine was fed to a gravity separation circuit and then subjected to cyanide leaching. Gold was recovered from the filtered leach solution in a Merrill-Crowe zinc precipitation circuit.

For two consecutive years the author and his wife have been fortunate enough to have been invited by the Peoples Republic of China to work with Chinese geologists of the Geological Bureau of the Ministry of Metallurgical Industries (MMI). Our visits, each of which lasted 7-8 weeks, took us to northwestern Sichuan, central Anhui, and much of Hebei Province, as shown in the accompanying drawing. We were asked to evaluate, criticize, and offer suggestions on the exploration and mining techniques used by the Chinese. Our commission both years was centered on gold, although we were also to visit other operations when the opportunity arose. In 1986, the visit primarily concerned with disseminated "Carlin" type gold deposits; in 1987, with "Greenstone" type gold deposits. Gold has been targeted by the Chinese as a metal of importance to the nation. Several governmental agencies have received direction and budgets to seek and develop gold properties. Besides the Ministry of Metallurgical Industry, gold is being sought by the Ministry of Geology, the China Gold Corporation, and reportedly the Peoples Army. There is considerable competition among these agencies. It is not uncommon to find two or more agencies working in the same general area. However, communication between the groups is minimal. Last year, we toured a small mine at Bambishan. We could see a diamond drill across the valley. The rig belonged to another Ministry and my guides voiced their curiosity to know what their competitors were finding. Mining, too, is not the monolithic bureaucracy that most Westerners anticipate in China. There are various levels of mining. These differ not only in sophistication, but in ownership. First, for small deposits the state allows "Peoples Mines". These can be owned and worked by individuals. The individual owner-miner may hire relatives or neighbors and give them a wage or he may turn the mine into a joint ownership situation. They

During the late 1960s the mining industry became interested in USBM's efforts to develop the gold-silver heap leaching process. In the last 10 years, successful commercial heap leaching applications increased. The process provides a relatively low-capital means of processing treatable ores with reasonable operating costs. Present gold and silver prices compared to capital and operating costs favor the continued growth of the heap leaching method. The heap leaching process is defined as the percolation leaching of relatively coarse gold-silver ore piled on an impervious surface. To date, dilute alkaline cyanide solution is the lixiviant of choice. Other leaching reagents such as thiourea and hypo have been suggested, although they are not currently used in heap leaching practice. Ores may he run-of-mine in size or crushed as fine as about 10 mm. Gold and silver-bearing so¬lutions draining from the heaps may be processed in activated carbon columns to recover the metals, followed by stripping and metal recovery, or treated by the Merrill-Crowe zinc dust precipitation method. All solutions are generally recycled to the leaching step, and the heap leaching system is relatively easy to control from an environmental viewpoint. One advantage of the heap leaching process is its flexibility. Plants may be very simple, comprising leaching of uncrushed ore on a locally-obtained clay-lined pad and shipment of gold and silver recovered in the form of loaded carbon or zinc precipitates; such a plant would have a relatively low capital investment. More elaborate plants for larger ore bodies may be planned to include crushing, cyclic pad use, and done gold-silver recovery. General planning is similar in each case. This article outlines some key factors in designing heap leaching operations and discusses how these factors are applied to develop a working operation. Since individual design requirements and local costs vary so much, only a few general comments on costs are included.

Introduction Bulk commodity prices are ever increasing. This forces buyers and sellers in world markets to look more carefully at methods for obtaining an accurate accounting of commodity transactions in commerce and materials utilization in processes. Weighing and sampling inaccuracies can result in loss of income, product quality, and cost controls. So weighing and sampling accuracies are extremely important. They are the key components of managing the quantity and quality control aspects of bulk materials handling. This article will confine itself to the weighing systems and will deal with various aspects of system design, calibration, and operations. Emphasis will be placed on new developments and requirements in this field. Weighing methods To measure the gravimetric pull on a body being weighed (the load), the gravimetric force must be countered by an opposing force. Measuring this counter-balancing force thus becomes the measurement of weight. The conventional even-arm balance shows the concept of balancing an unknown mass with an equal known counterbalancing mass. But the loads encountered in industry generally range up to many thousands of pounds. So it is obvious that the even-arm approach is not practical. Thus, with the exception of direct load-bearing load cells, most of the weighing equipment uses some form of lever system. This is usually a combination of first- and second-class levers, to gain a mechanical advantage. These levers permit the load force to be counter-balanced and hence measured within a practical range. Lever systems not only perform this force-reducing action, they also serve to focus the load force at a single point, for convenient measurement. They align the force vertically in one direction so that measurement accuracy will not be affected by unrelated side forces. There are five basic methods of gravimetric weight measurements. That is, there are five basic types of opposing forces. • The first is the standard weight counterbalance. It uses a known weight to counterbalance the load directly or through a lever system.

"Durability design for underground structures is an increasing focus of designers and owners in the underground construction industry. Many owners have expanded their requirements for durability design, with specific requirements for structure lifecycle and designer certification of structural durability. This paper describes current trends and best practices including: defining the underground structure lifecycle, historically durable underground structures, design methods for underground structure durability built of reinforced concrete, and durability of materials. Criteria to be used for defining end of structure life and owner’s maintenance responsibilities are crucial to lifecycle contract requirements. Current practices of several major owners are presented. Design methods are presented including United States code requirements. Current best practices for enhancing the durability of materials used in underground construction are discussed including: low permeability concrete, steel reinforcement concrete cover, the use of steel fiber, and testing for verification. INTRODUCTION Durability design is increasingly being recognized as an essential component of good design practice. Infrastructure owners recognize that to serve the public interest, constructed facilities must be lasting and durable. The public understands that structures with limited service life result in increased costs and add to their daily inconvenience with frequent repair and reconstruction. Engineers are increasingly asking not only is the structure strong enough but will it last for generations. Durability design requirements are no longer just adherence to some accepted practices, but are based on analytical approaches, with results that can challenge our beliefs in what construction materials and details result in a durable structure. This paper describes current industry requirements and practices for durability design of underground structures, and offers some suggestions regarding future trends and developments. SERVICE LIFE DEFINITION The service life of a structure is the sum of the time to onset of deterioration, called initiation period (ti), and the subsequent time period of deterioration ending when the structure is no longer functional, called propagation period (tp). Figure 1 shows a conceptual service life diagram. These time periods can be substantially affected by the level of maintenance performed during the life of the structure."

The development of column flotation is the most significant achievement in the area of mineral processing in the last few decades. The high efficiency of column flotation allows a reduction in process time, a decrease in the number of cleaner stages and in the volume of the circulating load in the flotation circuit, and, as a result of this, an increase in consistency and reliability of operations. Unique multisectional column flotation apparatuses were developed. Such designs have a number of essential advantages as compared to monocells. A change from monocells to multisectional column allows to provide favourable conditions for separation of particles of various floatability. To attain that aim particular hydrodynamics and aeration regime is established in each section of the column, operational variables being adjusted according to the floatability of the material. Therefore in multisectional column machines the material-apparatus feedback can be established, process variables optimized depending on the characteristics of the floated materials. This concept forms the basis of column designs we have developed. For the first time column cell with alternating slurry Rows (combination of co- and counter-current flows) were developed and commercialized . Successful operation was reported of the new generation of columns with cell volumes of 10 to 80 m3 and the height of 4-6 m in copper, molybdenum, antimony, tungsten and nickel ores and coal slurry processing at different plants. Operation experience of these cells showed their considerable design and operational advantages and verified the proposed options and relationships. The new apparatus is provided with a pneumohydraulic aerator allowing to control bubble size distribution, the service life of the aerator is not less than two years. A multilevel flotation model was developed and used to work out a technique of column design and process parameters calculation. A method of the apparatus design parameters calculation based on laboratory test results (scaling up) was worked out. The method is based on flotation macro and micro-hydrodynamics simulation.

INTRODUCTION This presentation will address changing trade patterns in lead and zinc from the mid 1980's to the early 1990's. Lead and zinc deposits are developed where they are found in many parts of the world. As many are not in major consuming areas, there is significant international trade in both lead and zinc concentrates and in refined metal. Forecasts of mine production have been analyzed, primary and secondary refining capacity and future consumption levels have been estimated, to arrive at the changes in trade patterns expected during the next half decade. This paper will first address concentrate and metal trade patterns for lead, then for zinc, and finally some remarks will be made on captive mine/smelter agreements, on regional trade agreements, and on barriers to trade. I would like to note that. there is only a small international trade in semi-fabricated products such as zinc die-cast alloy, zinc oxide, lead oxide or rolled lead and zinc. Most of the world's zinc and lead trade is in concentrates or refined metal. LEAD TRADE PATTERNS Lead Concentrates Six countries are exporters of lead concentrates. Three countries are in the Americas - Canada, Mexico and Peru, with two in Africa - Morocco and South Africa (including Namibia), and Australia. Due to the limited growth in lead consumption and consequent minimum investment in new production facilities expected, mine and metal production levels and future consumption levels are not forecast to change much between now and 1990. Accordingly, the tonnage of lead concentrates exported will remain essentially unchanged from these six countries. In total they have exports of 480,000 metric tonnes (metal content)* and by 1990 this figure is forecast to rise only slightly with the only increase taking place in Mexico. The concentrates are exported mainly to Western Europe & Japan. Apart from these six main lead concentrate exporting nations, a significant change is expected in the United States. Experts, like many of the speakers at the SME Annual Conference, are frequently called upon by lawyers to assist them in litigation. Due to the technical nature of many cases, the testimony of an expert with knowledge and experience in a particular field is necessary to help a judge or jury understand and decide certain issues. Environmental litigation is no exception. Experts routinely are called upon to offer testimony to establish the existence of contamination and its source, as well as the potential health and environmental risks associated with the contaminants. This article will briefly discuss the factors courts apply to determine whether to admit expert testimony after the recent Supreme Court decision in Daubert v. Memell Dow Pharm., Inc., 509 U.S. 579 (1993). The Court's decision in Daubert overruled a long-standing test that had based the admissibility of scientific evidence on its "general acceptance" in the field in issue. Next, the article will discuss in general terms what a party must do to "link a particular defendant's conduct to the contamination involved in order to recover from that defendant. This link, known as causation, varies depending upon the type of claim being asserted. Expert witnesses are used extensively to help establish causation. JUNK SCIENCE OR GOOD SCIENCE- HOW DOES A COURT DETERMINE WHAT TO LET IN A frequent complaint in litigation involving technical or scientific issues is that one party or another is trying to use so-called "junk science" to prove its case. While some expert testimony might be so clearly lacking in support or so "off the wall" that a court can easily determine to exclude it, other testimony, especially testimony on the "cutting edge," is much more problematic. In 1923, the District of Columbia Circuit Court of Appeals decided the case of Frye v. United States, 293 E 1013 (1923). Bacterial degasification of methane and conventional methane drainage for generation of power have become accepted practice. Comparative economies of both the techniques have been described. Authors have discussed an alternative technique, involving complete methane biocycle. The first stage of the entire process involves gasification of coal using a consortia of bacteria to generate methane. The generated methane has been proposed to be pumped,as in conventional methane drainage. Technique described is basically similar to underground coal gasification, with the difference that in place of coal combustion, degradation of coal to lower molecular weight compounds by one set of bacteria and then methanogenesis by methanogens, producing methane have been described. Brief account of communities of bacteria that may be employed have been dealt with. Three arguments in favour of proposed technology as an alternative to conventional coal mining are: 1.Total elimination of hazardous operation. 2.Availability of power plants based on methane drainage, assuring comparative economies. 3.Possibility of utilisation of fuel cell technology for power generation giving higher efficiency. All the three phases of complete blocycle viz (1) methane generation from coal (ii) conversion of methane to hydrogen and oxygen (iii) conversion of products so obtained to methane, thereby completing the cycle have been discussed. INTRODUCTION Drainage of methane by conventional pumping process (Boxho,et.al.,1980) not only is helpful in maintaining safe extraction of coal, but with utilisation of extracted gas for power generation, also helps in over all economy of coal mining. This is gradually becoming standard practice for mining of coal in highly gassy mines. An alternative technique (Thakur et. al., 1991) of bacterial degasification of coal seams is also gradually gaining ground. The bye products of this process that is carbondioxide and water, do not contribute towards economy of coal extraction process. However the technique has its own advantage particularly in goaf area for avoiding fire hazard and drainage of methane from coal seams prior to initiation of mining operation. Either of these techniques could be applied in specific situations with success.
