Upbeat, surprisingly so, might describe the mood at the2002 SME Annual Meeting and Exhibit in Phoenix, AZ. More than 4,000 mineral professionals gathered for three days of education, networking and product perusal. The Annual Meeting featured the theme, “Minerals for the Future@ SME” at the Feb. 25-27 gathering. Meeting attendance reached 4,039along with 479 exhibit booths show-casing 325 companies. Exhibitors found a good mix of industry types:37% from mining, 19% from processing, 20% from manufacturing and 28% from environment, education and government.

This paper focuses on the underground tunnel work at the Hollywood Water Quality Improvement Project (HWQIP) in Los Angeles, CA. The HWQIP is being constructed to provide a water distribution system to bypass the existing Hollywood Reservoir System, which supplies drinking water for 500,000 people. The major project features include, a 2.9-meter diameter 1,829 meter long bypass tunnel, a 1.8-meterdiameter 366 meter long utility tunnel, 3 jack and bore tunnels, two 136 million liters underground circumferentially wrapped pre-stressed concrete water storage tanks, associated piping, and mechanical facilities. The physical project location coupled with strong community involvement and stringent environmental concerns was a considerable driving force for this project located in the Cahuenga Pass area of the Hollywood Hills north of Los Angeles, CA.

Introduction Examining the short- and long-term job prospects for engineers in the coal industry might include looking at coal tonnage projections, future export markets, federal regulations, and the decrease in overall graduates. But coal is the US most competitive basic industry. As such, why not go back to basics? That is, there are three basic challenges that need to be faced by students, faculty, and members of the coal industry. These challenges are counseling, career placement, and professionalism. Counseling Counseling can include elementary, high school, and college students, as well as individuals already employed. But what happens to students after they have selected a course of study at a particular university? As shown in Fig. 1, only 87,000, or 7.25% of our graduates have technical degrees. Generally, there is a strong market projected for these engineering graduates. However, many students who have majored in other nontechnical curriculums, have to scramble for jobs. This says something about our ability to make students aware of where the real job opportunities are. As a student spends four or five years pursuing a degree, he or she is looking for professional guidance. The student has the right to expect "real world" counseling - counseling that is not "the way it should be" but "the way it is." The influence of faculty members is significant. They should take this long opportunity to tell students not what they want to hear or what the problem's of academia or the industry are, but what the real job market is all about. If faculty do not use this opportunity, they in-advertently-through omission - mislead their students. Once a student graduates and is a working alumnus, faculty should take advantage of their relationship with the student and continue to stimulate conversation leading to a two-way exchange of ideas and information. Faculty should also encourage and solicit financial support for their mining departments from their alumni. These monies, in many cases, will be matched dollar for dollar or more, depending on the company the alumnus works for. In the private sector, the responsibility is to communicate with faculty and students. Alumni can be effective by participating in this two-way dialogue with their professors at meetings, technical seminars, and conventions. In many cases, alumni will employ summer or co-op students in their organizations. While getting to know these students, industry members should level with them on where the true opportunities are and what it takes to be successful. Discrete (digital) signal processing techniques are proving to be very valuable tools for miners using the block cave method. Waveform analysis of different measured signals associated with active mining provides valuable information on production dynamics and safe operation of the mine. For example, correlation of the three-dimensional surface displacement velocity waveform and the production output waveform reveals a remarkably predictable time-varying physical process. In this paper, the authors discuss the signal processing techniques used to study these relationships, as well as the related implications for mining.

(Malcolm Gladwell) The mining industry is a crucial provider for virtually every person?s needs and thus indispensable. Yet, mining is a complex and risky business: plenty of high risk factors can occur and severely affect nature and the miner?s life and health. Especially for small and medium enterprises (SME) risks may also threaten the economic existence of the company. The responsible and sustainable management of a company should thus be based upon the systematic finding and handling of risks or briefly upon an efficient risk management system. Why do we need risk management? Because nobody is perfect and we make mistakes in the normal course of operation.

In this work, a new flotation strategy was proposed for the flotation of rutile. In this strategy, rutile was activated by Pb(NO3)2 and then floated with amyl xanthate (AX) as a collector at pH 8. Pb(OH)+ was the dominant lead species in the solution at pH 8 and is believed to be the major species reacting with the rutile surface. Time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) study revealed that the lead activation products were well distributed on the rutile surface, and AX− could further bind with the Pb atom on the Pb-activated rutile surface. In this regard, the Pb-activated rutile could be floated by AX. Furthermore, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that Pb(OH)2 was generated on the Pb-activated rutile surface. The electron transfer during the adsorption of the AX− on the Pb-activated rutile surface was also investigated by XPS analysis.

The Jollyville Transmission Main will be a 10.5-km- (6.5-mile)-long, 213-cm (84-in.) diameter rock tunnel. The tunnel will pass beneath the Balcones Canyonlands Preserve, which was established to protect two endangered bird species, six endangered cave invertebrates and a threatened salamander. To address the sensitive habitat that the transmission main is to pass through, the city of Austin developed an environmental commissioning (EC) process that brought together environmental engineers and scientists, the city?s project management team and the designer team to work collaboratively to meet the city?s goals of producing a cost-effective design while also protecting the environment. This paper describes the environmental commissioning process and the benefits it brought to the project and environment through some unique environmental mitigation measures to protect this sensitive area.

The Palm Jumeirah is the smallest of the three Palm Islands (Palm Jumeirah, Palm Jebel Ali and Palm Deira). San Francisco, CA will host about 1,500 tunneling and underground construction professionals from around the world during the biannual Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC), June 19-22. These professionals are gathering in a city that has seen much under-ground work throughout its history. And, today, the San Francisco region has more than $4.6-billion in tunneling projects under way. The RETC will include three-and-a-half days of technical programming, complete with proceedings, two short courses, two field trips and a host of social activities. In addition, the accompanying exhibit has attracted 127 exhibitors in 152 booths, an RETC record. The following is a brief list of activities that will take place during the conference. A study was undertaken to determine the effect of five industrial frothers on the relationship between entrainment recovery and water recovery. The experiments were conducted using a Batequip rectangular 60 liter steel cell which was run in parallel with the first cell in a copper/silver prefloat rougher circuit. The concentration of the frothers ranged from 2.5 g/ton to 8.4 g/ton. The experiments were repeated at three different froth depths. A power function was found to fit this relationship with no discontinuity in the relationship caused by the changes in frother type and concentration and froth depth.

Durban Harbour in South Africa is one of the continent’s busiest ports however the harbor entrance is currently too small for the new generation of container ships. There-fore it is to be deepened and widened by the National Ports Authority in the near future. An existing immersed tube tunnel carrying major sewer, water and other utilities under the harbor first needs to be removed and replaced by a deeper 4.4 m ID ser-vices tunnel. Construction of the deeper tunnel saw the first use of a slurry machine in South Africa and was required to negotiate grades up to 20%.

One way of cost reduction is attained when using materials with improved erosion ? corrosion resistance. For many years hard irons successfully answered the Mining Operation needs however application ranges were limited due to the low chemical resistance of such alloys. Corrosion resistance of any hard iron increases when microscopically homogenizing chromium and generating passivation conditions throughout and between all metallographic phases. Chromium distribution of the new material called Max10 was analyzed with EDS ? energy dispersive spectroscopy. At critical depleted chromium carbide ? matrix interfaces chromium increased to 31.72% which is well within passivation levels. Generally the corrosion resistance of high chromium hard irons provided by Metal Casting Industry is limited to 0.5% sulfuric acid and 28 PPM ionic chlorides. Such restrains increased when using Max10 to 2.0% sulfuric acid and 100 PPM ionic chlorides. Max10 contains 35% carbide volume fraction, has excellent corrosion resistance within pH = 1.15 ? 13.6 while fracture toughness under plain - strain conditions and Mode I opening is KIC = 20 KSI.(inch)1/2. Wear rate was calculated with the pin-on-disk apparatus using a diamond indenter per ASTM G99 recommendation. After years of research, experimentation and implementation the Max10 castings were service installed in slurry pumps and mixing equipment. In some applications the life time of slurry pumps manufactured in Max10 tripled versus previously used materials.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION Alignment The Strenger Tunnel forms part of the S16 four-lane expressway between Landeckand Bludenz. The construction of this important East-West connection started in 1973with the Arlberg Road Tunnel as its key constituent. Beginning in 1992, solutions for the section between Pians and Flirsch were investigated. Efforts to conserve nature and to avoid potential avalanche and landslide areas led to a solution detouring the villages in the Stanz valley. The starting points were predetermind by the intersections at Pians in the East and at Flirsch in the West. As a result of the expected traffic load and the comparatively high gradient of 2.9%, both one-way, two-lane tubes were constructed at once. The north tube is 5.851 m long, the south tube 5.775 m, see Figure 1. In this decade of the 1.970's it is forecast that eight billion cubic yards of rock will be excavated from 400, 000 miles of new tunnels, drifts and other underground workings in the western world, according to estimates in a report of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). It is expected that the cost of this work will be in excess of $54 billion in constant 1970 dollars. Most of this underground excavation will be in mining -- 97% of the tunnel length and 89% of the volume - -the balance in construction. In addition to this huge excavating task, in the 18 developed nations of OECD, will be projects in the Communist Bloc and in the developing nations. Underground excavation requires the successful completion of three principle activities: A. Break -- to free rock from the solid work face. B. Remove-- to clear the work area of broken rock. C. Support -- to assure stability of rock surrounding the underground excavation and to eliminate risk of rock collapse. In today's fully mechanized excavation systems, continuous miners, roadheaders or tunnel borers, (A) break the rock loose from the face, and (B) remove broken rock with their mucking devices and load it onto belt conveyors, mine cars, trucks, or any other appropriate haulage system for disposal. Reliable stress measurement using hollow inclusion gauges and monitoring stress change using borehole stress meters and borehole deformation gauges in anisotropic rock remains a challenge for the rock mechanics community. In this regard, the complex variable method advanced in 1983 for deducing stress in anisotropic rock is flawed and software is privileged. Fortunately, advances in computer hardware and software now enable fast, reliable reduction of hollow inclusion stress measurement data for determining stress in anisotropic rock. Monitoring stress change in anisotropic rock poses a different challenge but is also subject to numerical analysis. Stress measurement using a hollow inclusion (HI) gauge such as the triaxial Australian HI is done in four steps: 1) drilling a measurement hole, 2) installation of an HI, 3) stress relief of the HI by overcoring, and 4) data reduction. The last step, data reduction, is the focus of this work. The process is well-known in linearly elastic, isotropic rock (Worotniki and Walton 1976, Duncan Fama and Pender 1980). However, in case of linearly elastic, anisotropic rock the requisite technology is not readily available. This situation is somewhat surprising because anisotropy is more often the rule rather than the exception, especially in the neighborhood of ore bodies. Rahn (1984) has pointed out the potential for significant errors with neglect of anisotropy and the adverse consequences for engineering design. Amadei (1984) has also pointed out the potential for errors with neglect of anisotropic rock properties in stress measurement. Worotniki (1993) cites other studies that indicate potential for serious errors when doing measurements in anisotropic rock. In both theoretical cases (isotropy and anisotropy), data reduction is essentially a composite of solutions to boundary value problems in linear elasticity. In the finite element approach, the analysis is a simulation of gauge hole drilling, installation and overcoring. Two important advantages with the finite element approach are a more faithful representation of the conditions of HI stress measurement than approximated in theory and the capability for handling rock whether isotropic, transversely isotropic or fully anisotropic

The use of virtual reality (VR) technologies to train miners is an evolving area in research and development. In July 2006, representatives of 14 international organizations met to discuss current VR-related efforts and explore ways to employ VR in the future. This paper gives an overview of the various approaches presented at the meeting and discusses directions for future implementation. An example of a training package that teaches mine map-reading skills is presented. The meeting was the first step to building collaborations for furthering VR applications for mining. Planning has begun for a 2008 meeting open to broader participation.

With construction of the first phase of the Automated People Mover (APM) Tunnels nearing completion, this paper will address how knowledge from recent Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) and New Austrian Tunneling Method (NATM) tunnel construction at the airport was used to refine the methodology for the next phase of tunnels currently in design. The benefits include an enhanced understanding of the ground conditions; allowing optimization of excavation sequences and support requirements; a more effective instrumentation and monitoring program; and improved construction details and related contract provisions.

To mitigate and control the combined sewer overflows from 17 outfalls in the City of Detroit, three outfalls in Dearborn Heights and eight outfalls in Redford Township, the Detroit Water and Sewerage Department has completed the preliminary design of a storage tunnel in 2005. In 2006, a final design has revised the alignments and the inside diameter (ID) of the tunnel. The revised tunnel system includes an 11.28-km(7-miles) 9.14-m (30-ft) ID tunnel, a 24.4-m (80-ft) ID pump station, two work shafts about 15.2-m (50-ft) ID each, and 14 drop shafts with various IDs. This paper discusses the latest development of this tunnel system.
