INTRODUCTION Froth flotation is the most widely used and economic means of concentrating metal sulfide ores such as those containing copper, lead, zinc, nickel, molybdenum, and pyrite. Also recoverable are other metal species that are often associated with sulfide ores such as cobalt, platinum, gold, silver, etc. Froth flotation is a physico-chemical process for separating finely ground minerals from their associated gangue material. The process involves chemical treatment of a finely divided (ground) ore in a water pulp to create conditions favorable for the attachment of certain of the mineral particles to air bubbles. The air bubbles then carry the selected minerals, called valuable, to the surface of the pulp to form a stabilized froth which is removed and recovered. The unattached gangue material remains submerged in the pulp and is either discarded or reprocessed. To obtain the adherence of the desired mineral particles to the air bubbles, at least two specific steps must occur: a hydrophobic (water hating) surface film must be formed on the particles to be floated along with a hydrophillic (water wetting) film on all other particles; and a controlled bubble surface tension interface must be maintained, allowing for high particlelbubble collision frequency and efficient attachment or sticking of the particle to the bubble once collision has taken place. In most flotation applications, the above two steps are controlled by chemical flotation reagents. The collector is a chemical reagent which produces the hydrophobic film on the valuable mineral particle and is the primary driving force that initiates the flotation process. The frother is a chemical reagent which influences the collision frequency and attachment efficiency of hydrophobic particles and air bubbles. Thousands of research papers and books have been published on the chemical theory behind sulfide mineral collectors, e.g., Fuerstenau (1962), Fuerstenau (1976), Fuerstenau, et. al. (1985), King (1982), Leja (1982) and Moudgil and Somasundaran (1987), This article will only address and summarize some of the more practical aspects of collector usage. The industrial scale practice of froth flotation in sulfide mineral concentration has changed little since the 1950's. For example, of the approximately 80,000 metric tons of sulfide mineral collectors used commercially (1980) in the free world, almost 98% were known and manufactured in some form 25 years ago. A very interesting and informative history of collector development has been given by Crozier (1984). In addition, the industrial scale practice of froth flotation applied to sulfide ores has proceeded since the 1920's with often little direct (predictive) scientific explanation due to the extreme complexity of the flotation process. Empirical testing has been a mainstay of industrial flotation reagent development and use. Even today there is often strong disagreement between researchers as to the mechanisms of chemical flotation practices that have been performed successfully at an industrial scale for many years. As a result of the above environment which makes reagent cost/performance analysis difficult for new reagents, there is a strong tendency for the flotation operation to use, and reagent companies to supply, as cheap as possible raw materials and manufactured products that are quite general in application. In the last 20 years or so, there has been increasing technical effort to tailor make reagents for specific applications, but to date such work has had little commercial impact. It is clearly the hope of this author and others that this situation will change in future years as technology improves and pressure for improved flotation performance intensifies. This article is a condensation of collector usage trends quantified as part of a comprehensive industrially oriented applications program on froth flotation organized by Klimpel and coworkers (1979-1987) and as reported in various countries that participated in the program from 1978-1983. Under a contract awarded by the U.S. DOE-PETC, the Pennsylvania Electric Company and New York. State Electric and Gas Corporation are conducting a test program to evaluate and optimize the performance of a two-inch air-sparged. hydrocyclone (ASH) for cleaning fine coal. The test program is being conducted at the Homer City EPRI Coal Quality Development Center, utilizing Upper Freeport coal classified to minus 0.15 mm as the process feed material. A matrix of experiments has been conducted to establish the influence of significant design and operating variables (including overflow and underflow orifices, inlet slurry pressure, airflow rate, and reagent dosage) on the production of deep cleaned coal. Performance of the ASH is being compared to conventional froth flotation, utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. This paper focuses on work completed to-date to optimize the performance of the air-sparged hydrocyclone for cleaning fine coal. INTRODUCTION The Pennsylvania Electric Company (Penelec) and New York State Electric and Gas Corporation (NYSEG) have been evaluating advanced fine coal cleaning processes for the production of compliance grade coal (1.2 pounds S02/million Btu). Laboratory bench-scale froth flotation results were compared with results of advanced flotation processes as performed by various organizations, utilizing the same coal feed. Among the processes evaluated, the air-sparged hydrocyclone (ASH) - developed by Dr. Jan Miller at the University of Utah - was considered to offer the best potential for retrofitting into an existing coal preparation facility because of the increased capacity per unit volume. The ASH has been shown to process over 100 times the throughput of conventional froth flotation cells. In May of 1988, Penelec/NYSEG was awarded a contract from the Department of Energy's Pittsburgh Energy and Technology Center (DOE-PETC) to optimize the performance of a five cm (two inch) ASH for producing compliance grade coal from raw classified minus 0.150 mm (1.00 mesh) Upper Freeport coal, and to compare its performance with conventional froth flotation utilizing advanced techniques and selected flotation reagents. The test work is being conducted at EPRI's Coal Quality Development Center (CQDC) in Homer City, Pennsylvania, utilizing a circuit processing 0.10 to 0.25 tons of coal per hour. Other members of the Penelec/NYSEG contract team include the University of Utah, Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., Davy Dravo, Kaiser Engineers, Ebasco Services, and Management and Technical Systems. ASH DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION The ASH-2 System is a five cm ID (actually 4.76 cm) air-sparged hydrocyclone manufactured by Advanced Processing Technologies, Inc., under license from the University of Utah, for the purpose of research, evaluation and development. A schematic drawing of the air-sparged hydrocyclone is presented in Figure 1. Basically the air-sparged hydrocyclone consists of two concentric right-vertical tubes, a conventional cyclone header at the top, and a froth pedestal at the bottom. The inner tube is a porous tube through which air is sparged radially. The outer nonporous tube simply serves as an air jacket to provide for even distribution of air through the porous inner tube. The slurry is fed tangentially through the conventional cyclone header to develop a swirl flow in the radial direction. Air is sparged through the jacketed, inner porous tube wall and is sheared into small bubbles by the swirl flow. Hydrophobic particles in the slurry collide with these bubbles and, after attachment, are transported radially into a froth phase which forms on the cyclone axis. The froth phase is stabilized and constrained by the froth pedestal, thus moving towards the vortex finder of the cyclone header and discharged as an overflow product. Hydrophilic particles generally remain centrifuged in the slurry phase and are discharged as an underflow product through the annulus created by the froth pedestal.

Introduction During the past several years, persistent concerns about an economic slowdown in India have tempered capital-expan¬sion plans. This has encouraged companies to find methods of increasing the capacity of existing production equipment. One of the more cost-effective methods of increasing produc¬tion capacity without major capital investment is to improve equipment maintenance to prevent needless machine down¬time. This can have a significant financial impact because of reduced maintenance costs and increased machine availabil¬ity. The maintenance program employs different techniques, but the analysis of the vibration behavior of machine compo¬nents to assess their condition was found to be the most accurate technique for monitoring various machine disorders. A dragline that handles overburden in open pit mines is one of the more capital-intensive pieces of production equip¬ment. It is imperative that the machine be run at its optimum capacity under the prevailing environmental conditions. Condition monitoring of the various components of the dragline through vibration analysis not only improves the machines availability but also ensures a long operation time free from sudden failure. This paper describes the application of vibration monitor¬ing and analysis techniques to assess the components of a W2000 dragline. The paper reveals that condition monitoring through vibration analysis can be as valuable in failure prevention as it is in failure analysis. Finally, the paper presents an approach to a knowledge-based expert system to the quick and correct diagnosis of mechanical faults in a dragline. Equipment A dragline is an intermittent-discharge-type excavator having a long boom at one end. Unlike other excavators, the bucket is not rigidly held by the frame structure. In favorable geomining conditions, the intensive operation of these exca¬vators is the least-expensive means of overburden removal. The basic working elements of this equipment are the hoist system, the crowd and retract system, the wing mechanism and the propel mechanism. The walking dragline is accepted as the most economical machine for stripping overburden at depths of up to 60 m (200 ft). They are electrically powered and the various motions are effected by individual drives. The Ward-Leonard system is used to provide the optimum flexibility in controlling different dc-drive motors. To mini¬mize the cost of mineral extraction, the largest such machine in India has a 24-m3 (850-cu ft) bucket with a boom length of 96 m (315 ft). Draglines are very costly, and considerable financial penal¬ties may arise from sudden stoppages due to component fail¬ures. Thus, operational reliability is of the greatest importance. Active measures are now being taken to minimize downtime by adopting condition-based maintenance techniques. Though a number of techniques come under this scheme, it has been observed that assessing the health of the dragline by measuring vibration is the best method of determining the dynamic behavior of its various rotating components to avoid any catastrophic failure. Based on criticality, the vibration-behav¬ior of the following components are studied: • motor-generator unit, • exciter unit, • hoist motor-gearbox unit, • hoist drum-gearbox unit, • drag motor-gearbox unit, • drag drum-gearbox unit and • swing motor unit The approach Increases in the vibration levels in different subsystems of the dragline were observed due to the presence of faults such as unbalance, misalignment, looseness and bad bearings. A vibration behavior study included the measurement of vibra¬tion level, trend analysis of time-domain vibration signals and vibration frequency analysis at bearing points of the components. A vibration meter, a vibration analyzer and a data collector are used. Vibration-level measurement. When the dragline was assembled and put into operation for the first time, vibration data were collected to generate baseline data for the equip¬ment (based on International Standard ISO 2372). Investigations show that injuries and fatalities in mining workplaces in developing countries are increasing. In Turkey, the number of workers killed in occupational accidents in the Zonguldak Hard Coal production region per 100,000 tons of coal production is 2.83 in the private sector and 2.03 in the public sector. For this reason, it is important to conduct risk analyses in terms of occupational health and safety and to implement measures quickly. Risks are evaluated with reactive and proactive approaches. Because hazards and events are often unpredictable in high-risk areas such as coal mining, it is not practical or meaningful to plan proactively in advance for every possible situation underground, especially psychosocial risks. However, it is important to develop protective strategies and measures for unexpected events or to take a reactive approach to prevent future incidents or accidents and to identify psychosocial risks. Therefore, reactive risk assessments based on the tactics and strategies of criminology can be conducted and spatiotemporal geographic information system (GIS) techniques can be utilized, enabling managers in mining workplaces to correct assessments.

INTRODUCTION This work is a continuation of the preparatory study by Rustan and Stöckel 1979 (3) and (4) of the possibilities to introduce automatic mine ventilation in Swedish mines and construction works. The preparatory study has been financed by the Swedish Board of Technical Development. In the study it was recommended that an automatic step by step control of the fans near the working place due to diesel exhaust emission would be the best solution. A more advanced alternative would be to regulate the fresh air continuously in proportion to the contamination. The latter alternative has been studied by Boliden Mineral Co in the Udden mine. In this study it was found that the air supply could be regulated continuously but it was very important where the sensors feeling the contamination were placed. An intense study of the environment underground is now being planned by our division together with specialists from the National Board of Health and Safety, The Swedish Work Environment Fund, LKAB and the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. Different gases, radon, dust, airspeed, moisture temperature and pressure is planned to be measured continuously and correlation between the parameters is going to be established to decide the best measurement parameters for regulating the system. The best situation of sensors is also going to be studied. Despite this work hasn't been done yet this paper covers some of the problems which could be encounted with continuous regulation. In this report the environment has been studied during the test with step by step regulation of fans by radio. Diesel vehicles are the largest polluters under ground in Swedish mines and we have therefore suggested that the large diesel vehicles should regulate the fans. The goal of this study has therefore been to find how active diesel vehicles should be able to start and stop gallery fans at both intake and return air. In this paper different methods for activating fans are discussed. Then the best methods are chosen and tested in the mine. In this study we have found that changes of temperature is a cheap and effective method to start and stop cross cut fans in sublevel caving and radio signals seem to be an attractive system for start and stop of gallery fans. This work has been done in close collaboration between LKAB in Kiruna and the University of Luleå - Division of Electronics and Division of Mining and Rock Excavation. A reference group for the project has been established with ventilation experts from the mines, representatives for the local mine worker's unions and authorities from the local Governmental Inspection of the Workers Safety. VENTILATION SYSTEM STUDIED In the project the ventilation system at LKAB in Kiruna has been studied. The mining method used is sublevel caving with 9-13 m slice height. The air is heated winter time over ground by hot water heat exchanger. The main fans are pushing air down to a main distribution level along the 4000 m long and about 100 m wide orebody. From the distribution level, air is taken through shafts down to the sublevels, where it is pushed through the levels by local gallery fans on both intake and return side, see fig 1. The air ( ~ 8 m3/s) is moving freely through the gallery head. The cross cuts are ventilated with smaller fans, diameter 500 mm, and flexible duct, see fig 2. The aim of this study has been to study how to start and stop gallery- and cross fans and examine the environment when the fans are stopped . In Sweden there are no regulations telling that a minimum of air amount must be supplied. Instead the hygienic limits must be fullfilled.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION Shortwall mining is one of the newest mining meth¬ods to be introduced into the world coal industry. The technique of shortwalling seems to have a number of origins, but it is generally agreed that it is an outgrowth of pillar-and-stall mining where timbering was employed as the primary means of roof support. In early opera¬tions the face was undercut by a shortwall cutter, hand¬bored, and blasted. The coal was loaded by hand or gathering arm loader. Australia, having experienced success with this method, advanced the technique through the use of mechanized roof supports in 1968. Although there were several attempts at shortwalling in the US, it was not until 1973 that Eastern Associated Coal Corp.'s Federal No. 1 mine successfully extracted a shortwall panel. Table 1 is a list of shortwall opera¬tions in the US as of April 1976. Shortwall mining is a method of mining in which a continuous miner cuts and loads from the short end of a rectangular pillar of coal while hydraulically powered self-advancing roof supports provide protective cover. Characteristics of a shortwall system include panel di¬mensions (Fig. 1) of 610 to 1219 m (2000 to 4000 ft) in length, face widths of 30 to 61 m (100 to 200 ft), straight-line ventilation, and production machinery, with the exception of roof supports, commonly used on con¬tinuous miner units. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS AND LIMITATIONS The justification for shortwalling is primarily eco¬nomic, i.e., increased production and recovery concur¬rent with savings in material and labor. The method also has a number of secondary benefits including the much needed progress it has stimulated in deep mine technology, the alternatives it presents to some of the problems resulting from the 1969 Coal Mine Health and Safety Act, and is perhaps a key to the solution of the enigmatic labor problems which plague the industry. The advantages of shortwall mining over continuous miner units include the following: a highly effective method of ventilation and dust control; a greater per¬centage of extraction (approximately 85%) ; fewer equipment moves, hence more efficient operating time; cost savings on materials such as roof bolts, rock dust, ventilation curtains, timbering materials, and the labor needed to supply, load, and transport these materials; a cyclical pattern of mining, each phase of which, i.e., development and retreat, lasts for approximately three months and appears to be psychologically motivating as well as highly productive; and improved safety. In addition to these positive aspects, a shortwall sys¬tem also has advantages over a longwall system, and these are listed as follows: the capital outlay for a shortwall system is one-third to one-fourth that for a longwall (1976 prices); the shortwall system utilizes equipment that is used on a continuous miner section, with the ex¬ception of the roof support system; there is a great deal of flexibility in areas with numerous gas wells and in areas where surface subsidence cannot be tolerated; the shortwall has reduced tailgate problems, since the tail¬gate entry serves as a return airway only; and the cyclical pattern of mining insures that the mining machinery pro¬duces coal even while the roof support system is being moved to another panel. There are several parameters which govern the se¬lection and use of a shortwall system. They are all of equal importance, and hence are not listed in any par¬ticular order. These are deposit size, seam height, seam inclination, roof and floor conditions, depth of over¬burden, subsidence and chain pillar extraction, man¬power, ventilation, and materials handling. Deposit Size Reserves available for shortwalling should be suffi¬cient for at least an eight to ten-year period, since this seems to be the effective life, without rebuilding, of a hydraulic roof support under average conditions. The recognition of perlite as a distinct volcanic glass, and of the arcuate fractures that often characterize these natural glasses, dates back at least to the late 19th century and perhaps into the 18th century (Howell, 1974). Some authors suggest that recognition of perlite dates considerably further into antiquity, perhaps to the 3rd century BC (Caley and Richards, 1956). Most recent definitions identify perlite by the presence of vit¬reous, pearly luster and by the presence of characteristic concentric or arcuate perlitic fractures. As discussed more fully below, arcuate fractures in perlite need not be megascopic. The textures of perlite which commonly occur in deposits range from dense to highly vesiculated to pumice-like. Thus, the classical definition of perlite is descriptively restrictive compared to the natural range of textures and neglects to address the issues of genetic origin and geologic occurrence. In spite of the petrological usage of the term perlite, the in¬troduction of expanded perlite aggregate into industrial markets caused the term to be applied as well to the lightweight, cellular aggregate that is produced through the rapid thermal expansion of milled perlite ore. Perlite is distinguished petrologically from other natural glasses by a silicic or rhyolitic composition by the presence of 2 to 5 wt% total chemical water held within the glass structure and often by the presence of pearly luster and onionskin-like perlitic fractures. Worldwide, occurrences are associated with Tertiary through early to middle Quaternary volcanics and with the glassy portions of silicic domes and flows, with vitric tephra, with the glassy chill margins of dikes and sills, and with the glassy portions of welded ash flow tuffs. Less commonly, perlite is reported in association with the glassy portions of volcanic plugs and lacco¬liths. The perlite carapaces that partially or fully comprise extru¬sive domes and flows are often thick and areally extensive, and thus provide commercially attractive targets for low cost open pit mining. Perlite tuffs and tephras are also important commercial sources. Mining costs are minimized by open pit quarrying and by either bulldozer ripping or blasting. Crushing and sizing facilities are generally close to the pits. Due to the low weight and large volume of expanded perlite, unexpanded perlite that has been crushed and sized is usually shipped nationwide directly to local markets where it is expanded and processed for distribution to end users. The vast majority of international trade is in unexpanded perlite. In the United States, the evolution of the expanded perlite industry can be traced to the late 1930s and early 1940s when expanded perlite aggregate was introduced into gypsum plaster and concrete markets as a substitute for vermiculite (Schundler, Jr., oral communication, 1991) and was promoted for use in a much broader spectrum of products (Howell, 1974). By the early 1950s, end user markets were well established and small expanders were numerous east of the Mississippi River. Today, mining and expan¬sion is undertaken throughout the world. Worldwide production of perlite is dominated by the former Soviet republics, the United States, and Greece. Total worldwide production of processed perlite during 1990 is estimated at roughly 1 778 000 tons (Davis, 1991). The physical properties of expanded perlite that give this prod¬uct unique commercial value include: low bulk density, chemical inertness, high insulating ability, nonflammability and fire resis¬tance, and its ability to retain water. These and other physical properties give expanded perlite value in such uses as: lightweight acoustical and thermal insulating aggregate; component in plaster, insulating cements and lightweight concrete; loose fill insulation; as aggregate in horticultural applications; and in milled form as filter aid. In the United States and Europe, the largest end use is within building construction products.

Competitive pressures involving product duality, uniformity and economics are increasing the interest in and accelerating' the adoption of automation by the cement industry. The demands of this industry on instrumentation and control manufacturers for more effective and reliable control of process variables is also increasing. The trend to replacing small grinding mills with a fewer number of larger mills is lowering the investment requirement per unit of capacity both for the mills and for their automation. Cement process control systems of today are more sophisticated than the equipment installed two or three years ago, not because the process itself is more complex but because todays demands require a higher degree of control action and accuracy. Because of increasing labor costs, an important objective of an automation program is a reduction in the process labor content. This can be realized by allowing the operator free time for other duties, by increasing the number of grinding circuits one operator can supervise and by removing to. a large extent the need for the operator to make process' adjustment decisions.

Normally I would like to begin a talk on photogrammetry by defining the word. However modern technology has changed the science so radically that it bears little resemblance to its original definition. Photogrammetry as defined is a science of taking accurate measurements from photography. Today's photogrammetrist, in addition to working with photography, finds himself working with magnetometers, infrared scanners, radiometers, holo¬graphy, lasers, side-looking radar, digital interfaces, computers and countless other modern space age concepts. The modern photogrammetrist is a pilot, photographer, lab technician, mathematician, geologist, programmer, engineer, physicist, and cartographer. His modern instrumentation and many spheres of activity all have a role in the environmental sciences. For example, the magne¬tometer which measures the earth's magnetic fields is used to locate the earth's ore deposits. The infrared scanner captures the heat emitted from the earth to detect ground waters and thermal pollutions. To elaborate on each of his many endeavors would take volumes rather than this short paper. I have elected therefore to discuss what I feel is his most important role in the environmental sciences - that of cartographer.

Ion exchange techniques have been growing fast and spectacularly in all phases of Science for the last two decades, but still its acceptance as a unit operation in Metallurgy is resisted. Mainly this is because ion exchange procedures are thought of as glamorous techniques by which only relatively expensive metals are to be recovered. Perhaps this concept comes from the early and basic marriage of uranium and other high price metals and ion exchange procedures. The general trend is that ion exchange technique requires equipment and materials which are too expensive to economically perform a chemical step whenever "cheap" commodities are produced. However, we are here presenting a means of utilization of waste hydrochloric acid by an ion exchange technique. We have studied this from the engineering and economic standpoint in a number of variations of the main procedure discussed here and we-conclude that under proper economic circumstances, the cost of the ion exchange material as well as the equipment and labor involved in the ion exchange section, is by no means unreasonable.

Rock bolting or anchoring are methods of stabilization which are not being fully utilized in California and probably in other parts of the world due to lack of understanding of the principles, or due to poor results in actual installation. The problem is greater in California because so much of the rock is either soft or badly fractured and broken. Almost any recognized type of rock bolt or anchor will perform successfully is hard, fresh rock, but the problems become many-fold when working in decomposed granites, shales, soft sandstones or other soft, highly-broken rock. There has been an enormous amount of research by manufacturers, consultants, private organizations, and governmental agencies on rock bolting. It would be impossible to discuss all the methods and philosophies of rock bolting in this paper. Therefore, with the indulgence of the experts, I will give only a very generalized coverage on rock bolting techniques. However, My main purpose is to point out some of the problems of rock bolting in soft rock.

The field of percussion rock drilling is subdivided into two areas of application; that which takes place on the surface and that which takes place underground. Surface drills are used in quarrying, highway construction, and maintenance work; underground equipment in mining and tunneling work. Two basic principles are involved in the operation of all percussion drills. First, the principle that reciprocates the impacting piston and second, the principle that causes the drill steel and bit to rotate. The back and forth motion of the piston is accomplished by a self-acting automatic valve that admits air alternately to each end of the piston (Figure 1). Drill steel and bit rotation is imparted by an integral ratchet mechanism (Figure 2) in the so-called "rifle bar" machines (Figure 1) or by a separate pneumatic motor in "independent rotation" drills (Figure 3). While rock drills are subject to all kinds of physical and operational abuse, they are most sensitive to faulty lubrication. Proper lubrication is the single most important factor in the longevity of a percussion drill.

About 1/3 of the world's supply of phosphate rock is produced in a relatively small area of the Florida peninsula east of Tampa. Until this past year, a circle with a radius of about 25 miles and centered on Bartow would encompass the major producing areas. During the past year producing areas have opened in North Florida which promise to vie with the Polk-Hillsborough County area in terms of proven reserves. In addition, new phosphate production is planned for counties to the south and west of the present fields. From the existing production areas, however, more than 19 million long tons of phosphate were mined in 1965. As mining engineers most of you probably are familiar with the methods of mining and beneficiating the pebble phosphate rock. You thus recognize that, although some water quality problems may arise from these processes, there is no potential air pollution problem. To make an economically useful product, however, further processing must take place. It is from this additional processing that potentially damaging materials may be discharged to the atmosphere.

The practice of dust abatement or control is not new to any operation of United States Steel Corporation. This report will review those activities, past and present, within the five operating districts of United States Steel-Coal Operations with specific reference to mechanical and continuous mining, and including both the health and safety aspects of the problem. Obviously, the first principle of dust control is to inhibit its formation If this is not practical, steps may be taken to prevent its becoming airborne. Airborne dust control can be realized by either collecting it at the point of generation, diluting it with large volumes of air to reduce concentration, settling it by various means, or with reference to ignition hazard only, render it incombustible by neutralization with an inert material. These basic principles have been verified by the work of many, including the Bureau of Mines, U. S. Department of Interior, Bituminous Coal Research, Inc., and the Mining Research Establishment of the National Coal Board of Great Britain. Their application to every day mining problems is best illustrated by the following examples.

This paper addresses detailed models of the temporal pattern of material flows produced by longwall mining units and procedures for inferring the parameters of these models from field data. First, a model is established that predicts material flows referred to shearer position and cutting element. This model is comprised of trend and fluctuation components. The trend component, which is invariant between repetitions of the cut cycle, accounts for deterministic effects on the flow pattern, such as web depth variation as a function of the cutting operation, systematic tendencies for seam height and cutting speed variations along the face, changes in the relative velocity between the shearer and face conveyor, etc. The fluctuation component models random effects on material flow and employs time series approaches. Subsequently, a method is given for converting the positionally-referenced flows to temporally-referenced flows. The model serves as a basis for generating detailed, accurate computer simulations of material flows from longwall units. As such, it provides a more rigorous foundation for analysis of cutting procedures and outby materials handling systems in longwall mines.

While flue gas scrubbing with alkaline solutions is one of the oldest methods of removing SO2 from flue gas, a satisfactory scrubbing system for this application, which is both technically and economically viable, has yet to be developed. Interest in alkaline scrubbing has continued because of its basic simplicity and comparatively low capital cost. Drawbacks of alkaline scrubbing are the tendency for accumulation of solids to plug the system, scaling, corrosion and erosion problems and the need to dispose of large quantities of waste. Discussed are instrumentation loop applications to a 90,000 cfm alkali scrubbing test facility, the process problems the instrumentation engineer faces in. selection of equipment, the performance of the instruments selected and the problems encountered during start-up. The Test Facility incorporates centralized electronic process control with a digital data acquisition system provided to log process variables and print off normal (alarm) conditions. Flue gas SO2 content is measured by ultra-violet analyzers and analysis of the total gas stream is by gas chromatographs.

The current trend in gold ore processing is the development of lower grade or highly refractory deposits. The perplexity of treating low grade oxidized ores has been adequately addressed by heap leach technology. However, refractory gold ores are very difficult to positively characterize the gold association within the mineral matrix. Gold accompanied with refractory sulfitlc or carbonaceous mineralization can often be sub­micron In size and occur interstitially. Mineralogical examination of these ores Is difficult, expensive, and occasionally Inconclusive. Hence, the metallurgist Is given little information for the selection of processing alternatives. The purpose of this paper Is to demonstrate the use of diagnostic leach procedures to assist the metallurgist' s decision-making process to solve some of these problems. By sequentially liberating and/or leaching gold associated with specific minerals, the amount of recoverable gold in each stage can be determined. Through careful interpretation of the results obtained by diagnostic leaching, the metallurgist can devise a flowsheet for treating the ore or solve a problem at an existing plant

The determination of the air quality needs to dilute diesel exhaust gases to a safe level must be individually evaluated for particular cases. One such case is when diesel-powered vehicles are working in long dead- end headings with forcing auxiliary ventilation. The vehicles perform specific operations in a cyclic order required by the technical process. The dynamics of this process in certain conditions has a vital influence on environmental conditions in the working area and in the rest of the heading. Recent studies on diesel gas behavior in long headings have shown a zone of increased concentration of pollutants (accumulation) between the face and the mouth of the heading. To be able to control these accumulations of pollutants, use of the concept of planned air discharge by using the Coanda-type ducts is proposed. The main objective of this paper is to demonstrate an application of computer simulation of that process. It is shown that, by planning the additional air discharge, the concentration of diesel gases can meet required limits along the heading.

The treatment of refractory gold ores, in particular the "competing" technologies and their relative advantages and economics, has become a major segment of most mineral technology oriented conferences in recent years. A common theme is the increasing refractory nature of gold ores being treated. This is despite ores such as those at Kalgoorlie having required roasting for liberation since the last century. Papers on refractory gold treatment have examined the characteristics of refractory ores and the causes of reduced recovery (eg La Brooy 1994), the available technologies and their relative economics eg Litz 1990), and the selection of a suitable process route (eg Nicholson 1993, Weston 1994). The most comprehensive collation of data on such processes is provided in the different editions of Randol. A variety of classifications and definitions of "refractory ore" have been published. Due to the many factors which can impact on the recovery of gold it is perhaps not feasible to develop a universal characterisation that can be applied to all gold bearing rocks. La Brooy et al have provided the framework for characterisation shown in figure 1.

The Kori Kollo operation is owned by Empresa Minera Inti Raymi S.A., a Bolivian mining company. Inti Raymi is an eighty-five percent owned subsidiary of Battle Mountain Gold Company (BMGC). The remainder of Inti Raymi is held by Zeland Mines S.A., a Bolivian mining company. The project is located near the village of La Joya, approximately 220 km south of La Paz, and 40 km north west of Oruro on the Bolivian altiplano. Inti Raymi started a heap leach operation in 1985. By 1988, following several expansions, 4,000 tonnes per day of oxide ore were being treated. At this time drilling was started to delineate the larger sulfide orebody. A feasibility study for the development of this deposit was completed in 1990, and following project approval, the engineering design was started later that year. During this period orders were placed for the major items of mechanical equipment. In July 1991, Minproc Engineers Inc. was awarded a firm price contract to design and construct the 14,000 tonne per day sulfide ore process facility.
