In many parts of the world deep level mining relies heavily on the use of refrigeration for providing safe thermal underground conditions. The trend in South Africa in recent years has been to locate the refrigeration plants on surface and to use these plants to chill water that is then distributed throughout the mine. The surface cooling installation normally consists of a pre-cooling tower in which water is first chilled before it is sent to one or more refrigeration plants for further cooling. Presently, the majority of these refrigeration plants use CFC refrigerants; however, to conform with the Montreal Protocol, these plants will have to be replaced or converted for use with alternative refrigerants. The optimum design criteria for installations using the new generation of refrigerants will be affected by their characteristics and are likely to be different from those currently in use. In light of these developments the industry is examining a number of alternative systems for future installations including water vapour refrigeration. Factors that affect the decision on the type of refrigeration system to be used in mine installations are reviewed. INTRODUCTION Gold mining has been carried out in South Africa for over 100 years and most of the reserves close to surface have been mined out; this has led to mining taking place at greater depths, approaching 4000 m below surface. One of the consequences of operating at these greater depths is that it is necessary to install refrigeration plants to cool the ventilation air so as to provide safe and healthy working conditions. With the current low precious metal prices there is pressure on mines to cut costs and in recent years there has been considerable effort devoted to the design of more cost effective and efficient refrigeration plants and cooling systems. In the last 10 years there have been many studies into the use of ice for specific applications (Eschenburg et al., 1986; Hemp, 1988 and Ramsden and Lloyd, 1992) and at present there are three ice making plants in operation on South African mines, each of which produces ice in different processes. In addition, detailed design studies have been carried out on the "split ammonia system" (Napier and Patterson, 1992). In this refrigeration system the evaporator is located underground close to where the cooling is needed, whilst the condenser and heat rejection system is on surface. As far as refrigeration plants are concerned the trend has been to move away from standard package units to custom built refrigeration installations. This has given the design engineer greater flexibility in the choice of key components for refrigeration installations. For example both screw and centrifugal compressors are used, the heat exchangers for the evaporators and condensers may be either plate or shell and tube, and in a number of installations evaporative condensers are used. In addition, the following refrigerants are in use, R12, R22 and ammonia. The acceptance of the Montreal Protocol and its amendments by the South African government will restrict the use of CFC refrigerants and it will be necessary to re-evaluate various refrigeration systems, including those that do not use conventional refrigerants, such as air cycle and water vapour systems, for new surface installations. Although new systems and refrigerants are being developed, only the following refrigeration installations will be compared in this paper: - a refrigeration system using R134a which has properties similar to R12 - refrigeration system using R22 or a new alternative refrigerant with very similar properties - an ammonia refrigeration system - a water vapour refrigeration system The benefits of new cooling systems are not discussed in detail, since they are largely mine specific and outside the scope of the present paper. Since the optimum design for an air cycle system (del Castillo, 1988) is dependent on the mine layout, this system is also not included.

INTRODUCTION Our present estimates of world P205 consumption for all uses show an average annual growth rate of approximately 1.9% per year. The estimated 1985 consumption of 41.5 million tonnes of P205 is predicted to increase to 57.1 million tonnes of P205 by the year 2005, which represents a growth from 157.7 million tonnes in 1985 to 217 million tonnes of phosphate rock in 2005. The present situation of oversupply and extremely weak phosphate product prices is, however, expected to continue in the short term and a normal supply/demand balance may not be achieved until after 1990. The growth in P205 demand, in conjunction with the higher cost of replacing low cost mines as they are depleted, will place economic pressure on world farm economies through the increased cost of phosphate fertilizers. The availability of rock supply is not the challenge; rather, it is the economics of new rock supply. This economic challenge of providing new rock supply is by no means limited to the United States. Even in centrally controlled economies, the cost of rock from domestic mines of marginal quality and economic viability, coupled with burdensome infra¬structure requirements, may result in tonnage additions at very high cost. Although government subsidies to offset higher production cost is a factor in some countries, world production in the next 20 years will be directed, if not governed, by economic factors. Established infrastructure, good quality reserves, and existing operations will provide a competitive advantage for new prod¬uction. It is our opinion that the current world supply structure will remain relatively stable through 2005, in that most of the traditional suppliers will retain supply roles. U.S. rock production, although it is not expected to grow beyond the present level, will still be a major contributor to world supply. Although dramatic changes within mining, fertilizer production and farm economics may appear disruptive, the current supply scenario will, in general, continue with the major issue being production economics. WORLD DEMAND Demand for P205 by region in the world has been estimated using projections of population, crops and yield, arable land, economic and other data as a basis for future demand projec¬tions by Blue-Johnson and Associates, our col¬laborators on a recent multi-client study. Non-fertilizer P205 demands were estimated in the same general manner. These estimates of future demand are based on an assumption of reasonable world political and economic stabil¬ity, debt repayment requirements maintained at workable levels, and resolution of problems in the agricultural economy to a point where normal supply/demand forces can interact freely to provide a basis for continued P205 supply. The results of these studies indicated an average growth rate of 1.9% per year through the year 2005. This growth could be as low as 1.5% per year, or as high as 2.5% per year. It is our opinion that the estimated rate of 1.9% per year is most probable. This moderate growth rate considers both the major economic constraints facing the world agricultural industry today and the general problem of affordability of fertilizers and other crop inputs. WORLD SUPPLY There are adequately defined world reserves of phosphate rock today to provide supply well into the future, even at much higher levels of demand than presently projected. Using the U.S. Bureau of Mines estimates, which are based on stringent criteria for definition of reserves, the present world reserves base is approximately 35 billion tonnes. Identified resources raise the potential for production by orders of magnitude. Potential resources based on geological trends, and including offshore deposits, would again result in orders of magnitude increases in rock resources. Morocco leads the world in reserves base with approxi¬mately 21 billion tonnes. The U.S. is second, followed by the Republic of South Africa and Russia. These four countries control about 87%

7.1 INTRODUCTION Subsidence measurements include surveys of surface and sub- surface movements and measurements and monitoring of surface structural damages. In this chapter the most commonly employed methods are discussed. 7.2 MEASUREMENT OF SURFACE MOVEMENT Surface movements involve two basic components, subsidence and displacement. The other five components (i.e., slope, curvature, strain, twisting, and shearing) are derived from the two basic components. Since all measurements are geometrical, they can be measured by common surveying techniques. 7.2.1 MONUMENTS The first step is to select the types of monuments or surveying stations. Various types of monuments have been employed. The simplest one is a paint mark on the pavement or concrete slab, although this should be discouraged because it is easily affected by artificial or environmental factors. Others use steel or wooden rods, 2 to 3 in. in diameter or square by 2 to 5 ft long, driven all the way down, flush with the ground. Both types of-monuments have no provision for frozen ground heave and both are tampered with easily. A more elaborate type is shown in Fig. 7.1 (O'Rourke et al., 1982). A rebar or iron pipe, 2 in. in diameter by 6 ft long is driven down to nearly flush with ground surface. The top 4-ft section of the hole around the pipe is enlarged to 1 ft in diameter and grouted with concrete. The most sophisticated type of monument is shown in Fig. 7.2 (Conroy and Gyannaty, 1983a). It consists of two hollow steel pipes. The inner I-in. pipe, 10 ft. long is enclosed by a 2-in. pipe at the upper 5-ft. interval. The gap between pipes is filled with foam to isolate the inner pipe from external environmental effects. The bottom of the inner pipe can either remain open or be sealed with a cap, depending on whether the ground is dry or wet. 7.2.2 MONUMENT ARRANGEMENT AND SURVEY LINES The monuments are installed strategically to form survey lines. Three basic types of monument arrangements are shown in Fig. 7.3. Figs. 7.3a and 7.3b are for single and multiple panels respectively; Fig. 7.3~ is mainly for research purposes with multiple survey lines both in longitudinal and transverse directions. This is extremely useful for defining the distributions of ground deformation, as shown in Figs. 2.10 and 2.11. Basically there are two types of survey lines: the whole basin survey line which extends across the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, R, in Fig. 7.3 a&b), and the half basin survey line which covers approximately half of the panel width or length (e.g., lines R, F in Fig. 7.3 &b). Survey lines are generally straight and linear. They should be located on the major crosssections of the subsidence basin. Survey lines must extend beyond the edge of the opening for a sufficient distance so that the edges of the subsidence basin can be determined accurately. The minimum distance from the edge of the opening must be [ ] where h = mining depth, [ ] = angle of draw, and [ ] = 5 to 7 times monument spacing for whole basin surveys, or 8 to 10 times the monument spacing for half basin surveys. There must be at least two controlling monuments at each end of each survey line. Controlling monuments must be located beyond the influence of underground mining. The spacing of the monuments ranges from 15 to 200 ft. The UK National Coal Board (NCB, 1975) recommended a spacing equivalent to 0.20 of the mining depth. Peng and Geng (1982) recommended that the maximum monument spacing be dependent on mining depths as follows:

"It is expected that more than 10 Billion USD will be spent in Istanbul in coming years on tunnel boring especially with EPB-TBMs. However, the geology of Istanbul is very complex. Geologic formations changing from Paleozoic to Cenozoic ages cause tremendous problems due to frequently changed rock formations and andesite and diabase dykes. This paper summarizes a universal model to predict the performance of EPB-TBMs which is created upon the data base collected from several projects. The model first is based on predicting field specific energy and power consumed of TBMs using geo-mechanical properties of the excavated material and TBM diameter. Later net production rate is calculated using field specific energy and power consumed by TBM. A methodology to predict machine utilization factor permits to calculate daily advance rates. The validity of the model is tested using the data obtained from two recent metro tunnel projects. 1. INTRODUCTION It is expected that in a near future a total length of 400 km will be excavated in Istanbul in a complex geology. Selecting proper tunneling equipment, organizing an effective operational management with the right tunneling crew will be a major concern for an efficient scheduling of the future projects necessitating to create a model to estimate daily advance rates. Several TBM performance prediction models with few on the prediction of machine utilization time were realized in the past. However, there is quite limited number of research studies on predicting the performance of EPB TBMs. Specially predicting daily advance rates in complex geology, in mixed face, in fractured rocks, in transition zones etc. are in big concern (Namli et al. 2013, 2014). The first experiences in Istanbul with a gripper type TBM was a nightmare, roof collapses caused big delays in tunnel excavation (Bilgin 1993). A typical example to EPB-TBM was Kadikoy-Kozyatagi tunnel, changing TBM from opened mode to closed mode with few modifications on the cutterhead resulted a tremendous increase in the daily advance rates (Bilgin et al. 2009). The data collected from several tunnelling projects served a basis to create a model to predict daily advance rates of EPB TBMs. Within the frame of a research program the validity of the model was tested in Uskudar-Umraniye–Cekmekoy-Sancaktepe metro project and very recently in Mecidiyekoy-Mahmutbey project."

"The purpose of this paper is to review the most effective methods of reducing chloride transfer and chloride removal in the solution extraction and electrowinning (SX/EW) process. Elevated chlorides in electrolyte have various negative effects including a reduction in current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Historical controls that Sierrita has used to control chloride transfer, in order of effectiveness, have been chloride gasification at the EW that is directly correlated to amperage and chloride concentration in electrolyte, wash stage bleed and efficiency, width and velocity of aqueous bands, and electrolyte bleeds. Maintaining high bleed rates and high amperage settings has been a challenge with decreasing pregnant leach solution (PLS) grades, so keeping chlorides out of the electrolyte has become imperative. The effectiveness of reducing aqueous entrainment, optimizing wash stage efficiencies, and improving organic quality to reduce the transfer of chlorides to the electrolyte are illustrated in this study. INTRODUCTION The transfer of impurities from PLS feed streams to electrolyte in the Copper Solution Extraction process is a very common problem and is the reason that the wash stage exists in most SX operations. The main impurities affecting the SX process are iron, chloride, nitrate, and manganese. Elevated chlorides in the electrolyte have various negative effects including reduced current efficiency, increased handling costs at rod plants and smelters, increased anode corrosion, increased cobalt losses due to increased electrolyte bleed, degradation of HDPE piping, and increased corrosion in the SX/EW plants. Freeport-McMoRan Sierrita Hydromet is unique in that a high-chloride byproduct stream from the molybdenum process is pumped into the SX raffinate solution pond. This byproduct steam accounts for the majority of chloride introduced to the circuit, and over the years has built up to a point where 4000ppm chloride is consistently in the PLS feed to the SX. Concentrations of chloride over 70 ppm in electrolyte will result in downgraded cathode, so it is important to limit chloride carryover from SX as much as possible. Historically, Sierrita has been able to manage chloride levels with reactive techniques including increasing electrolyte bleeds and rectifier amps. Decreasing copper in PLS has made high amps harder to maintain, and increasing bleed rates have a direct impact on production goals."

Carbon dioxide, a by-product of combustion reactions, is a greenhouse gas linked to climate change. At Michigan Technological University, we have studied the capture of CO2 using alkali scrubbing solutions in a pilot scale packed bed counter-current scrubbing column. To do this, we have simulated flue gas by combining streams of CO2 and compressed air. Real flue gas has impurities such as CO, SO2, and NOx, and has lower levels of O2 than our simulated flue gas. In order to study CO2 capture from a real flue gas, the Department of Chemical Engineering worked with the Facilities department to install a pilot scale scrubbing column in the Michigan Tech steam plant. Experiments were conducted using a sample stream of the flue gas from the boiler in the steam plant. Data collected from these experiments were compared to the data collected from identical experiments conducted on simulated flue gas in the lab. The capture efficiency of the real flue gas scrubbing column is discussed in this paper. BACKGROUND The most common equipment used to separate CO2 from a flue gas stream is a counter-current packed-bed scrubbing column. The department of Chemical Engineering at Michigan Technological University has two such pilot scale columns. In order to study the effect of impurities found in real flue gas, one is installed in a controlled laboratory using a simulated flue gas created by mixing CO2 and compressed air. This column will be used to establish a baseline for percent capture analysis and is displayed by figure 1. The second scrubbing column is identical to the first, and is installed in the Michigan Tech central energy plant. The plant produces up to 130,000 lb/hr of 80 psig steam to provide hot water and heat for campus buildings. A typical wintertime load burns around 25,000 SCFH of natural gas; this load releases 1.4 metric tons of CO2 per hour. The flue gas the steam plant produces is roughly 7.5% CO2 by volume. In order to study CO2 capture from this flue gas, a tap has been installed on the main exhaust duct which draws a sample of the flue gas into the pilot scale scrubbing column. Figure 2, a simplified diagram of the steam plant, shows that the tap was installed between the economizer and the stack condenser.

"Tin ore from the southeast of Yunnan in China is a complex polymetallic low-grade ore. Because of the highly disseminated extent ore, cassiterite flotation was applied in industrial production instead of the low efficient gravitational separation. Benzohydroxamic acid (BHA) was widely used as a collector in cassiterite flotation, but the consumption of BHA was large. In this study, the influence of octanol in cassiterite flotation from the southeast of Yunnan using BHA as the collector was investigated. The results indicated that single octanol showed almost no flotation capability to cassiterite without BHA. However a small amount addition of octanol as the auxiliary collector can decrease the consumption of BHA significantly, while did not reduced the recovery of cassiterite obviously. Infrared spectra analysis indicated that the single octanol adsorbed on the surface of cassiterite was unsteady adsorption, and a new entity assembled of BHA and octanol in a well manner was able to adsorb on the surface of cassiterite steadily. The probable self-assembly structure model of BHA and octanol existing on the surface of cassiterite was analyzed. INTRODUCTION Cassiterite is the prime and economic mineral from which tin metal is extracted economically (Qin et al., 2011). The estimated tin metal resources in the world is about 4.9 million tonnes, about 30.5% of which is distributed in China (Mineral commodity summaries, 2013). Cassiterite has many characteristics such as including heavy, hard, and extremely brittle in nature. Hence cassiterite is preferentially concentrated by gravity separators. However, the influence of particle size on gravity concentration is obviously. The separation efficiency is very high for coarse particles while it drops down considerably for fine sizes. (Turner and Hallewell, 1993). Application of flotation and development of selective surfactants have made it possible to recover fine and ultrafine cassiterite from the gravity tailings. A substantial amount of research work on cassiterite flotation has been reported in the past years. The outcome of such research has helped to develop various collector reagents such as cupferron (Vivian, 1927), sodium dodecyl sulfate (Edwards and Ewers, 1951), sodium oleate (Collins et al., 1968), salicyaldehyde (Marabini, 1978), alkyl and aryl arsonic acids (Senior and Poling, 1986), alkyl and aryl phosphonic acids (Gruner and Bilsing, 1992), alkyl sulfosuccinamates (Khangaonkar and Kamarudin, 1994), and alkyl hydroxamates (Sreenivas and Padmanabhan, 2002)."

Introduction Hydrogen peroxide is known to the mining industry as a powerful oxidant. able to attack and to destroy cyanide, the most important leaching reagent (Knorre and Griffiths, 1984; Griffiths, 1988; Griffiths, 1988). [ ] The most recent development, however, is the use of H2O2 as an oxidant in the cyanidation of precious metals. This application may appear to be a contradiction to the above mentioned detoxification process. This can, indeed, be the case if certain conditions are not considered carefully. Degussa has developed a new process to enable the application of H2O, in this field without having any detrimental effect on the cyanide. The incentive to seek an oxygen supplier like H2O2 instead of air was the fact that one of the most important conditions for the fast dissolution of gold is the presence of physically dissolved oxygen in the pulp (Kydryk and Kellog, 1954; Warstell, 1987). [ ] Complete gold recovery within a reasonable leaching time may only be achieved if the pulp is saturated with dissolved oxygen. Gold losses in leach operations mainly occur due to the following reasons: In some cases, the saturation of oxygen in the pulp cannot be achieved by aeration due to the difficulty to transfer oxygen from the gaseous into the liquid phase. This happens, for example, in pulps with a high viscosity. In such cases, even violent aeration only results in a low concentration of dissolved oxygen in the pulp. In any case, the starting phase of leaching requires the highest amount of oxygen. Therefore, it is especially important to raise the dissolved oxygen level to saturation in the starting phase. Peroxide assisted leach process (PAL) The intention of the process is to introduce oxygen in a liquid form. As a result of intensive research work, it could be shown that hydrogen peroxide can be used as a source of oxygen in the leaching of gold ores. To avoid side reactions, the following conditions must be applied: Hydrogen peroxide must be diluted before it is added to the pulp. The dosage of H2O, must be properly regulated based on the oxygen level of the pulp. An important part of the continuous O, control is a special oxygen electrode, which resists the extremely abrasive action of the pulp.

INTRODUCTION Deformation measurements are some of the simplest and most useful measurements that can be made by the mining/rock mechanics engineer in assessing the sta¬bility of openings in rock. A number of tools and tech¬niques are presently available. This chapter will de¬scribe the most common instruments, their application, and present the equations needed for data reduction. MECHANICAL STRAIN GAGE Description of Instrument A mechanical strain gage of the Whittemore type shown in Fig. I is a useful instrument for measuring deformations of pillars, sidewalls, and roofs of under¬ground mines. Measurement gage lengths typically range from 51 to 254 mm (2 to 10 in.), and the dial indicator reads to 0.0025 mm (0.0001 in.). The instru¬ment measures the deformation between precision gage points which are anchored in the rock. The anchor points are typically grouted in small holes drilled 12.5 mm (1/2 in.) or so deep into the rock. Strain a is calculated from the measured deformation AL with the equation [ ] where L is gage length. A necessary accessory for the instrument is a master bar normally made from invar steel having a low co¬efficient of thermal expansion. This bar allows one to check the instrument for changes in the mechanical zero point and to correct for temperature effects on the measuring instrument. The instrument is available from Soiltest, Inc. for a cost of approximately $340; the cost of the master bar is approximately $55; and nonreusable brass inserts which are anchored in the rock are nominally priced at $0.27 each. All prices are for 1978. Applications Two classes of applications may be considered, one where only one measurement direction is involved and the second where three measurement directions are em¬ployed. Applications where only one measurement di¬rection is necessary include: monitoring crack or frac¬ture separation or shear movement with anchor points on opposite sides of the discontinuity; measurement of vertical strain in a pillar or sidewall; and measurement of steel support deformations with anchors in the steel members. The more general application involves a strain ro¬sette consisting of three measurement directions which for convenience are oriented 1.04 rad (60°) apart to form an equilateral triangle as shown in Fig. 2. INTRODUCTION Coal workers' pneumoconiosis and sili- cosis are only two of several diseases which are rlassed as pneumoconiosis. These are respiratory diseases caused by dusts which are inhaled and accumulated in the lungs. The individual particles of dust cannot be seen by the human eye. They are so small that they escape the natural cleansing mechanism of the nose and air passages and make their way down to the terminal air sacs of the lung where they injure the cells and cause the formation of scar tissue. Consequently, if there is exposure to high concentrations of dust over a period of time - usually, a number of years - the amount of scar tissue increases and begins to impair breathing. As a result, the miner develops shortness of breath, coughing and wheezing ad-if exposure continues - this progresses to permanent disability and frequently to death. Death is often due to pulmonary heart disease, the effect of stress on the heart 2s it tries to compensate for the weakened lungs. Specifically, silicosis is an occupational lung disease caused by the accumulation of free silica (quartz) in the lungs. Silicosis is considered the most important form of pneumoconiosis, not only because of its seriousness as a respiratory crippler, but also because of the large number of workers who risk contracting it in a variety of occupations. Quartz is one of the most common substances of the earth's crust, estimated at about 60 percent. Silicosis has been found in coal, metal and granite miners, as well as in other workers, such as sandblasters and pottery makers. Silicosis is also known to predispose the lung to tuberculosis and to increase the chances that a worker will contract chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The seriousness of silicosis was tragically brought to public attention about 50 years ago. During 1932-34, workers were involved in digging a tunnel through rock at Gauley Bridge, West Virginia. While their exposure time was relatively short, they developed silicosis because of the high concentrations of quartz. By 1936, 476 workers had died of silicosis and about 1500 were believed to have the disease (Washington Post, 1982). It is difficult to tell how many coal miners have silicosis. Stone is considered by many to be the premium material for beauty and durability in all kinds of construction. Its use dates to the dawn of civilization and only buildings made of stone have survived from ancient times. The use of stone relative to other materials declined from the beginning of the present century reaching a low point in the third quarter, but there has been a resurgence in the use of stone in construction during the past decade, due probably, to new techniques for producing stone, a greater recognition of its beauty and durability, and greater affluence among consumers. The aesthetic appeal of stone is attested to by the many attempts to simulate it in synthetic materials. Today, natural stone is considered by many to be the ultimate in aesthetic appeal, durability, and ease of maintenance. Consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. The US Bureau of Mines reported that the total value of US consumption in 1978 was $1 13 million and that total imports were valued at $65 million in 1979 (Anon., 1980). In 1989 consumption of domestic dimension stone was valued at $208.3 million and imports at $525 million. This dramatic increase occurred after demand had decreased at an average rate of 2.5% in the two decades prior to 1978 (Anon., 1980). More than half of the imports come from Italy, but production of dimension stone has increased worldwide spectacularly. Meaningful statistics on dimension stone are hard to acquire. The finished piece of stone is a highly value-added product, but stone may be sold as rough blocks, sawed slabs, or finished product. The same piece of stone may therefore be sold and reported three or more times. Furthermore, although the quantity of stone is most commonly reported in tons, stone cladding is more often sold by the surface area and at the same price for different thicknesses. By any measure, however, the production and consumption of dimension stone has increased dramatically during the past decade. A significant indication of the resurgence of stone was the introduction of two new trade publications during the 1980s. Stone World (Tradelink Publishing Co., Inc., Oradell, NJ), introduced in 1984 is published monthly and Dimensional Stone (Dimensional Stone Institute, Inc., Woodland Hills, CA), introduced in 1985 is published monthly. "Historically there have been a number of different hypotheses and empirical models developed in an attempt to describe the nature of fracturing above longwall panels in underground coal mining. The motivation for such models varies, ranging from understanding the impact of mining on surface subsidence to back-analysis of caving behaviour in the immediate roof behind the longwall face. One of the most critical motivating factors that is taking on increased importance in many coalfields is the need for better understanding, and hence prediction of the impact of mining on overlying strata, particularly strata units acting as aquifers for different groundwater horizons.This paper reviews some of the major prediction models in the context of observed behaviour of strata displacement and fracturing above longwall panels in the Southern Coalfields of New South Wales, south of Sydney. The paper discusses the parameter often referred to as “height of fracturing” in terms of the critical parameters that influence it, and the relevance and appropriateness of this terminology in the context of overlying sub-surface subsidence and groundwater impact. The paper proposes an alternative terminology for this parameter that better reflects what it is and how it is used. The paper also addresses the potential role of major bedding shear planes mobilised by mining and their potential influence on overlying subsidence and groundwater interference.INTRODUCTIONKnowledge of the detailed nature of rock deformation and failure above any form of large-scale underground mining is always going to be limited to interpretation from a very incomplete set of data. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to directly measure the detailed nature of the rock failure, fracture networks, and deformational behaviour above an extracted mining area. Limited techniques such as borehole extensometry can provide some evidence of relative or incremental deformation in the direction of the borehole (usually vertical). However, such data cannot assist below the horizon where full caving has caused major rotation and dislocation of rock blocks and effectively destroyed the instrumentation borehole. Above such a horizon, the data is only valid along the axis and in the direction of the borehole, and to the level of detail defined by the extensometer anchor spacing intervals. It is often also restricted by major shear planes intersecting the extensometer borehole and cutting off the instrumentation below the level of the shear horizons."

The addition of new data and corrections can be made under the control of a simple editing session. All programs for this system are written in FORTRAN and executabe "MACROS".. After the addition of new data, the whole file Is reinitialized to update the binary file and cross-reference tables. Updating the binary file involves rerunning the initializing program. The creation of graphic plots like cross sections and plan views is menu-driven from a terminal and very user-friendly. Small files containing not more than 10,000 entries (survey and assay points) are suitable for this setup, particularly for computers with less than 2 Megabytes of real and virtual memory. The largest file processed contained 35,000 lines of survey and assay information and required 4 megabytes of virtual memory. Working with this size file slows down the time for the creation of plots and cross sections. Another independent system is more akin to a financial type of data base. It was installed in one Anaconda mine as part of the operation's inventory, warehouse, day-pay payroll, and purchasing data bases. It is a highly hardware-dependent system, in particular, IBM's CICS/VS (Customer Information Control System/Virtual Storage). This is a true relational data base that optimizes storage requirements, supports online inquiry, update, data entry, and data security. While this system has been tested and proven in accounting applications, it requires programming expertice in PL/I and other CICS utility programs. It is well suited for huge data bases (like the 35,000 lines of data), but cumbersome for small engineering files.

"INTRODUCTIONOne of the key drivers for the selection of a mechanized tunneling method in good quality rock masses is a good excavation advance rate. In order to achieve satisfactory advance rates, a good geotechnical performance of the rock grippers in main beam open tunnel boring machines (TBM) is required, besides other factors related to ground support and the performance of the cutter head.One well known potential issue of main beam gripper TBM is associated with the bearing capacity of the tunnel side walls while crossing fault zones or poor rock masses in general. Such a mechanism is similar to that of footings on rock and perhaps the most common problem associated with gripper performance. Depending on the quality of the rock, the rock under the gripper contact may experience significant damage and crushing (Figure 1), eventually affecting the TBM advance rate due to a lack of tunnel wall reaction/support. Such a mechanism is primarily dependent on rock quality, applied loads and gripper size.In the case of large diameter TBMs (e.g., D > 12 m), a second potential failure mechanism may arise associated with the loss of confinement within a rock pillar between twin tunnels, even in good quality rock but particularly in bedded sedimentary strata. Punching of the rock pillar may develop due to excessive shear along bedding partings and sub-vertical joints (Figure 2), particularly under a low stress environment. As a result, this mechanism is dependent on both the rock pillar width between twin tunnels and stress conditions around the tunnels, in addition to the previous factors described for the first failure mechanism."

The total attitude of the industrial minerals producing company is a most important factor in how they regard quality control, technical support for their customers, and procedures used in mining their minerals products. This philosophy of the producing organization directs their action along certain courses. For instance, one producer might see itself as a mining company with its major goal mining efficiency to make it exceedingly price competitive in the market place. Another producer might see itself as a wide spectrum multi-mineral producer that furnishes a reputation for a complete line of products. Another producer might see itself as a specialist in one specific industrial mineral and bet its whole bankroll on providing the very best of quality with the goal of becoming the largest producer of the mineral commodity. Each perception can have a different impact upon the producer's operations and its regard for quality control. Minerals Being Produced The specific markets being served will have their own influence on how mineral product quality is regarded. Ceramic raw materials, for instance, have a very low tolerance for iron which is the cause of low fired color. Thus, industrial minerals for use in glass and ceramic markets must be won from deposits with a very low iron content. A high iron silica sand might be sold to a manufacturer of good old beer bottles. That is a solution to one particular quality facet, but eliminates selling to a significant market in clear glass, porcelain enamel, ceramics whiteware bodies and hobby glazes. Thus, there is a need for sound research in the industries expected to be served before the product is brought to market.

L.R. Bower In regard to the paper by J.B. Gwiazda, it makes a highly technical approach to show that the µ factor used by designers of lemniscate-guided roof supports has never really been confirmed as a maximum and assumes that convergence is vertical. Also, the paper does not appear to take into account deflection of structures, which occurs when the lemniscate and base members are fully loaded to their maximum stress level, nor the front to back line of the support in relation to differential roof to floor movements caused by strata movements under pressure. It is not unusual for differential movements to be slightly diagonal to the line of the support, particularly in faulted areas and on gradient faces. The paper also does not take into account consolidation of fines immediately above and below the support. Generally speaking, any differential movement is from face to waste and under these conditions the µ of 0.3, which appears to be an international standard, has worked in practice. However, if the face end of the support is lower than the waste end, then the µ of 0.3 can be considerably increased, giving rise to the damage mentioned in the paper. The ideal design should aim for a slightly forward bias in the lemniscate guide so that the last increment of setting is toward the face, tending to close any fissures that may have developed during the support advance cycle. The support should also be fitted with positive set valves to ensure that a high setting load density is attained to minimize bed separation. As far as powered supports are concerned, convergence is irresistible and all powered supports converge at their rated yield load. A similar principle can be applied to the differential roof to floor movements to drastically reduce the very high forces that would otherwise be applied to the lemniscate structures and pins and that, in turn, are transferred to the base arrangement and floor loading. Any differential movements are usually catered for by the 0.3 µ factor or deflection of structures in the lemniscate guide arrangement and consolidation of the floor. The floor loading, due to differential movement, is in addition to the support convergence load and requires additional bearing area to avoid possible floor penetration. Some seven years ago, Fletcher Sutcliffe Wild Ltd. (FSW) introduced a lemniscate-guided shield support where the lemniscate linkage is connected to the roof bar through two horizontally converging rams to allow differential movement to take place above a given rated figure. This is a known force and can be guarded against, whereas with rigid connections the forces, as yet, are unconfirmed. By careful design, a horizontal force in excess of 6 MN (60 tons) opposes differential movements for a total ram loading of only 2.5 MN (25 tons), or 1.25 MN (12% tons) each. This principle can considerably reduce the length and weight of the support in comparison with a rigid pin-type structure ; also, the yield load rating can be increased without affecting the lemniscate forces. The graph shows the tensile and compressive forces in a lemniscate linkage of a support with and without hydrostore. These forces react into both the roof beam and base members and, as can be seen from the support height to linkage load graph, a considerable reduction in these reactions is gained by the use of the FSW patented hydrostore system. Floor loading is considerably reduced under maximum µ conditions, and by allowing the roof bar to move with the strata, some degree of improvement to strata control is achieved in line with the assumptions in the paper. In practice, these movements have only been in the region of a few millimeters, which, in turn, reflects on the improvements to strata control by the addition of positive set valves. Supports to this design of both 450- and 280-t (496-and 309-st) rating have been successfully used in the United Kingdom for several years, negotiating many faulted areas without one single reported need for repair or maintenance. This includes supports left unattended during the year-long strike, proving the reliability of the system.

The Spa1lation Process Because of the low thermal conductivity of many hard rocks, rapid heating of these rocks produces a thin surface layer in which the temperatures attain high values. Thermal expansion of this surface layer is constrained by the reminder of the still cool rock, and when stresses within the surface rock become high enough, the surface rock breaks away from the cooler rock behind it and flies or falls off as a thin flake called a spall. Then the next, newly exposed surface is heated, and the process continues. This process is the basis of spallation drilling. The hot gases from a jet burner provide the heat for spallation to occur, and their high velocity provides a scouring action that transfers heat to the rock and removes the spalls as rapidly as they form. Spallation is a process which works in very hard rock. It is dependent upon the thermal expansion coefficient and the thermal diffusivity of the rock but is also affected by any discontinuities in the rock. To date the efforts which have been made to evaluate the various rock according to their spallability has been minimal. As the success of this process is dependent upon the characteristics of rock it is expected that the study of rock mechanics will prove to be of greater value to this program than to the other mechanism for drilling and excavating rock. Commercial Uses of SPALLATION In the 19408s, the Linde Air Products Division of Union Carbide (UC 1 began developing spallation for use in mining taconite ore, which is presently the chief source of iron in the United States. In this work UC developed a jet-piercing tool that burned fuel oil with oxygen to produce spallation and contained mechanical cutters to remove rock that was not amenable to spallation. The UC jet-piercing machines have since produced about 40 million feet of shallow blast holes used for emplacing explosives in the taconite mines. During this work it was found that hole diameters could be increased by merely reducing the advance rate of the burners and that existing holes could be enlarged by making another pass through the hole with the same burner. The Browning Engineering Go. of Hanover, N.H., has developed a hand-held spallation burner to cut slots in granite. It has been used for a quarter of a century and is now standard equipment for quarrying granite throughout the world. This burner, which resembles a small jet engine oriented with its exhaust pointed downward, is the forerunner of a flame jet burner used to spall experimental holes in granite at maximum rates in excess of 100 ft/hr when operating in hard, competent granite. It uses No. 2 fuel oil, which is burned with compressed air. The system uses water to cool the burner and the exhaust gases. These gases, along with the steam produced from the cooling water, blow the spalls from the hole. Experimental Work Theoretical and experimental work has been accomplished by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Los Alamos National Laboratory. This work is reported in Refs. (3) and (4). To verify the experimental results of this work laboratory scaled down field tests were conducted using two we1 1 characterized granites from quarries in Barre, VT and Westerby, RI, under defined heating conditions. In the laboratory tests a propane - oxygen heating torch was used to direct a flame at the granite surface and the spal 1 ing process was examined at various heating rates with a high-speed video taping system operated at 200 frame per second. This produced a time-lapse sequence where the onset of the spallation process was easily distinguished. Also the heat flux from the torch to a flat surface at various stand off distances and flows was measured. Throughout the history of mankind, the principal use of coal has been to produce heat through combustion. The heat is used in many ways: to warm air space for our comfort; to provide heat or energy to power industrial processes, such as cement and steel production; and to produce electricity. Because it is our nation's most abundant fossil energy fuel, coal in the late 20th century is on the threshold of becoming a significant source for synthetic liquids and gas energy fuels for this country. This is made possible by conversion processes which can change solid coal into various synthetic gases and liquids. These coal-derived fuels are nearly identical to the processed fuels and chemicals provided by natural gas and crude oils, which presently provide almost all the petrochemical feedstocks and energy fuels needed for the residential, light commercial, and transportation markets. A revolution is beginning to take place, not only in the United States, but in many other countries with a return to a coal-based energy economy. Also, new combustion and conversion technologies which are compatible with national health and environmental goals are rapidly emerging. These technologies will allow coal's use to be expanded not only in its traditional markets, but also to supply markets held by natural gas and crude oil. With the worldwide decline in natural gas and crude oil reserves, coal is being-looked upon to meet the energy demand. Because of these new coal conversion technologies, coal will no longer be only a combustion fuel, but a valuable raw material for production of a variety of clean fuels and chemicals.
