The exact date of man's first use of coal is lost in antiquity. The discovery that certain black rock would burn was undoubtedly accidental and probably occurred independently and many times in the world over thousands of years. It is quite likely that these independent discoveries were made when primitive man chanced to build camp fires on exposed ledges of a black rock, then was amazed when it caught fire. The Chinese recorded the use of coal 1100 years before the Christian Era and from the Bible we learn that King Solomon was familiar with coal in what is now Syria. In Wales, there .is evidence that the Bronze Age people used coal for funeral pyres, and it is known that the Romans used this fuel. There are other ancient references. So the knowledge that coal would burn, and even some uses of that knowledge, go back thousands of years. However, practical and consistent use of coal seems to date to England in the Middle Ages.

As a part of mine operation’s success key, Community Development nowadays seems to be a rule of thumb. Not only is for a short term need of the company during their operation but also for the national public opinion on the presence of the mining industry to a certain region. Nanggung region which is only a 2-hour drive from Jakarta, brings the challenges to Antam’s gold mine business in the areas such as illegal miner presence, easy access to the mine area as it is very close to the community, and national political sensitivity considering its proximity to Jakarta. The company allocates about 3%of its total operational cost annually for Community Development pro-gram. The program is derived through SWOT analysis and broad involvement of all community components to assure that the allocated fund is addressed to the right place. In the year of 2002, the company has successfully established a conducive-relation with the community.

Introduction Screening is an art, one of the oldest in the process field today, and one of the most widely used in our present age. Screening is being applied to an ever-increasing number of assignments, in an ever-expanding circle of industries. Screening is defined precisely as a mechanical process which accomplishes a separation of particles on the basis of size and their acceptance or rejection by a screening surface. Particles are presented to apertures in a screening surface and rejected if larger than the opening, or accepted and passed through if smaller. Screens are machines with screening surfaces used to classify materials by size. The screening surface is the medium containing the apertures for the passage of the undersize material. Screens are put to many uses - size separation, dewatering, desliming, media recovery, scalping, trash removal, washing, dedusting, conveying, concentration, and many combinations of these functions. Introduction The Mineral Resources Institute, The University of Alabama, has for the past three years been engaged in a program to develop a beneficiation system for eastern (Devonian) oil shales. One objective of that program was to evaluate advanced technologies for effecting a kerogen-mineral matter separation. Column flotation was among the advanced technologies selected for evaluation. Early in the program it was shown that column flotation was superior to conventional (mechanical) flotation and to the other advanced technologies being evaluated. The investigation then proceeded toward the further objective of defining the optimum operating conditions for column flotation. One observation made in the course of optimization testing was that introducing the feed into the froth (above the pulp-froth interface) resulted in an improved combination of concentrate grade and kerogen recovery. This observation was reported in a previous paper (Schultz and Bates, 1989). Because the practice of maintaining the pulp froth interface below the feed point is contrary to "conventional" practice, it was decided to subject the observation to a systematic series of tests. This paper describes a recent series of tests and the results that were obtained. Experimental equipment and procedure The arrangement of the column cell and auxiliary equipment for continuous flow testing is shown schematically in Fig. 1. The feed sump [O] is filled with a sufficient volume of prepared sample to permit a large number of tests to be performed (typically 12). Past experience has shown this is necessary to control sample variability and variability in the size distribution resulting from ultra fine grinding. The feed slurry is maintained at about 20% solids and is constantly recirculated and stirred. The sample is metered from the circulating pipe by a peristaltic pump [O]. The feed slurry is diluted with reagentized water [O] by a second peristaltic pump [O]. Wash water [O], also reagentized, is supplied through a third peristaltic pump [O]. While this feed system may seem unduly complex, it does permit users to independently vary either the wash water rate or the net solids content of the cell. In the tests reported here, the feed rate and net percent solids were constant at 12.5 gms/min. and 3.3%, respectively. Diluted feed enters the column through 6.35 mm-diam (0.25 in.-diam) copper tubing and is discharged upwardly at the center of the column. Tailings are discharged through flexible tubing that can be adjusted so as to control the position of the pulp-froth interface. The column is 76.2 mm-internal-diam (3 in.-internal-diam) and 1090 mm (43 in.) high. It is made from lucite tubing and is fitted with a 51-mm-diam (2-in.-diam) fritted glass air sparger having an average pore diameter of 50 µm. In performing a series of tests, the concentrate and tailing are allowed to discharge continuously. The system is allowed to equilibrate for 30 minutes after the pulp and froth reach operating levels. Concentrate and tailing samples are taken simultaneously for timed intervals (five to 15 minutes, depending on the volume of sample desired). After sampling, a change in operating conditions is made and the system is again allowed to equilibrate. The tests to determine the effect of the pulp-froth interface level were part of a larger series of tests in which the objective was to optimize the conditions for a rougher flotation stage in a two stage circuit. The sample used in this series of tests was an Alabama shale ground to d90 = 23.1 µm and d50 = 7.9 µm. The operating conditions remaining constant in this series of tests were as follows: Column height - 1600 mm (63 in.) Air sparser - 50 µm (average pore diameter) Spray water - 130 cc/min. Feed rate - 12.5 gm/min (0.4 oz per min) (dry solids) Percent solids - 3.3% Frother (Dowfroth 250) - 45 ppm The variable test conditions are tabulated in Table 1. Positions of the pulp level (pulp froth interface) and feed entry are presented as a percentage of column height (as measured from the face of the air sparser). Introduction The Conda Partnership's Dry Valley phosphate mine is a thinly bedded, multiple seam open-pit mining operation where selective mining techniques are used to recover phosphatic shales. The mining methods used are truck/shovel and scraper/dozer operations. Ore is shipped 32 km (20 miles) by rail to a beneficiation facility. The ore is upgraded by washing and calcining. The mine and beneficiation complexes are owned by the Conda partnership. It is a joint venture between Beker Industries Corp., of Greenwich, CT, and Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (US) Inc., of Alberta, Canada. The Partnership operates as a separate entity of the two partners. The Dry Valley mine is located 48 km (30 miles) northeast of Soda Springs in Caribou County in southeastern Idaho. The mine is situated on the Caribou National Forest. Mining operations take place between 2 and 2.4 km (6400 and 7900 ft) in elevation. It is accessible partly by 32 km (20 miles) of paved roads and 16 km (10 miles) of dirt roads. The winters are long and severe, and the summers are short and mild. This article describes the history, geology, exploration, mining, and reclamation that makes this mine Idaho's largest producing mine and the western US' leading phosphate producer. History and production In the mid-1950s, Western Fertilizers of Salt Lake City, UT, drove an exploratory drift in Maybe Canyon. A large bulk sample of phosphatic shales was analyzed for phosphate content and processing characteristics. No large scale mining or processing operations were undertaken. In the late 1950s, the Dry Valley property was sold to Central Farmers of Chicago, IL. No major operations took place. In 1964, Central Farmers sold the property to El Paso Products Co. of Odessa, TX. El Paso Products supervised the mining operations of Wells Cargo Mining Co. from 1965 through 1967. During this time, El Paso Products built a beneficiation facility and a fertilizer complex in Conda. A 32-km (20-mile) railroad was also constructed from the mine to this facility. From 1968 through 1972, the mine was shut down due to a depressed fertilizer market. In 1972, El Paso products sold its ore reserves, beneficiation plant, and fertilizer complex to Beker Industries Corp. In 1979, Beker Industries sold 50% of its ore reserves and 50% of its beneficiation plant to Western Co-Operative Fertilizers (US) Inc., of Alberta Canada, forming the Conda Partnership. It has operated the mine and beneficiation plant since January 1979. From the mid-1950s to the mid-1960s, no substantial production took place. From 1965 to 1967, El Paso Products stripped 3 Mm3 (4 million cu yd) and mined 2.3 Mt (2.5 million st). From 1972 through 1983, 50 Mm3 (66 million cu yd) were stripped and 18 Mt (20 mil¬lion st) were mined. Geology The Wells Formation forms high ridges and hillsides in the Dry Valley area. It is best exposed along the west face of Dry Ridge. It forms the imposing wall on the east side of Dry Valley. The formation is divided into two members. The lower member, about 213 m (700 ft) thick, is dominantly thin to medium-bedded limestone and silty limestone. It contains nodules and stringers of chert and minor sandstone. The upper member is composed principally of thick-bedded to massive cross-bedded, light-gray to orange-yellow, fine grained sandstone. There is some interbedded brown to light-gray limestone. This member varies from 369 to 457 m (1300 to 1500 ft). Recent investigations indicate that the upper Wells is of Permian age. Under some conditions, the Wells may be water-bearing. Otherwise, it has no apparent economic significance. Grandeur Member (Park City Formation) Overlying the Wells Formation is a distinctive light-gray to white dolomitic fossiliferous limestone. This unit has been identified by the US Geological Survey (USGS) as the Grandeur Tongue Member of the Park City Formation. This member is sometimes absent due to its contact with the Meade Peak Member of the Phosphoria Formation. It is easily detectable by its color, hardness, and fetid odor. Phosphoria Formation The Phosphoria Formation of Permian age was named from Phosphoria Gulch, Bear Lake County. The formation has been studied extensively and developed for its economically valuable phosphate reserves.

The natural size difference of clay and silica in the clay deposit is utilized in the dry air classification device. A case study in which the raw material from a clay deposit is converted into a portland cement plant feed is presented.

The role of a respirable dust scrubber on a continuous miner section using blowing face ventilation is examined in this paper and the above question answered. Methane control using high efficiency scrubbers coupled with blowing face ventilation is promoted.

Flotation plant simulation, a relatively recent methodology in mineral processing, is defined and corresponding uses are discussed. Typical simulation structures are compared. Current problem areas exist although these are not insurmountable. Following a brief state of the art discussion, the N. I. M. simulation program is reviewed. In general, digital plant simulation is expected to be of substantial benefit in the near future.

A "straight wire" flow through magnetic ore separator has been designed, built and successfully used to separate magnetite from typical slurries. The purpose of these experiments was to simulate the high field profile of a "straight wire" superconducting magnetic separator which would be capable of separating weakly magnetic hematite ore from typical slurries. Magnetite was used as the test mineral because it experinces the same magnetic forces at low field as does hematite at high field. The present separator concept is based on the fact that there is a particle concentration profile due to the gravity field for low velocity turbulent flow. When a magnetic field force of -g is applied the concentration profile of the magnetic particles will be reversed leaving the nonmagnetic particles flowing alone at the bottom of the channel. By means of a divider at the end of the channel the concentrate is separated from the tailings. It is shown that the time needed to deflect hematite particles in a narrow cylindrical channel concentric with the superconducting wire is small enough so that high throughputs in the turbulent flow region are possible. In the case of a high field superconducting separator the centrifugal force could replace gravity by rotating the flow around the straight wire conductor.

There is one quick way to substantially reduce the operating cost of a great many pining operations. It is to cut the demand charge on the use of electricity and gas. Demand charge is the utility company's charge for the maximum rate of energy usage which is in addition to the charge for the total amount of energy used. Energy demand is reduced by prohibiting simultaneous operation of devices, especially those that consume large amounts of energy, or by deferring the use of such equipment as air conditioners from one demand period to a subsequent period. To achieve that end, a control system can continuously measure the demand and turn off selected loads in accordance with established rules. Because of the complexity of most industrial plants, a computer is the best means of storing, measuring, calculating, and controlling the many variables associated with the many devices involved. A computer system for that use has been developed by the Westinghouse Computer and Instrumentation Division in Orlando, Florida. For most applications, this demand control system can be installed and operated by industrial plant engineering personnel with no special knowledge of computer technology. It can be used with both electrical and gas service. For clarity, let us examine electrical demand first.

The Flat Gap Mine is on Copper Ridge in the Appalachian Valley of East Tennessee, Large zinc orebodies occupy zones of solution and collapse breccias in lower Ordovician Kingsport limestone and dolomite, The principal ore mineral is sphalerite and the principal gangue is dolomite, The orebearing horizons are considerably more than 95% covered by thick residual clay, and geochemical prospecting under these conditions is an effective exploration technique which played an important role in the discovery and exploration of the Flat Gap Mine, The residual nature of the over-burden at Flat Gap is emphasized, Background heavy metals (mainly zinc) range from 50 to 200 ppm, and the anomalies range to 3000 ppm and more, About 80% to 9W0 of the soil zinc is in relatively insoluble form in solid solution with the hydrous iron oxides and in the crystal lattice of the clay minerals. Quite discrete zones in the soil with sharply contrasting metal value boundaries mark vestiges of bedrock mineralization, and such anomalous soil areas are often contiguous with partially weathered ore. It has not been possible on the basis of chemical criteria to distinguish between an anomaly formed from non-commercial mineralization and one formed from ore.

It is generally known and accepted that the efficiency of the blast furnace process, expressed by the symbols specific production and coke consumption, is influenced by a large number of variables connected to the type of burden, the alloy contents of the produced iron and the conditions of production as composition and preheating of the blast, the furnace heat losses and the possible use of fuels added on the tuyere level. It is furthermore obvious, that the coke consumption of the process will be influenced by specific production which could be said to be the result of two counter-acting influences. With high production, realized through intensive blowing, the passage time of the ore through the furnace is shortened leading to a decrease of the indirect reduction taking place in the upper part of the shaft within the temperature range of 300 to 1000°C. Simultaneously the external heat losses (constant in time) will be smaller calculated on each ton of iron and the resulting change in coke consumption will be the effect of both those influences. It is certainly of interest to be able to predetermine the effect of those variables before a change in the production practice is carried out.

The potential for the utilization solar energy for the production of industrial process steer in mineral processing industries is discussed briefly. To advance the technical and economic feasibility of solar-thermal systems applications, U.S. Department of Energy has funded several projects. NL industries of Newberry Springs, California is one among them and has been chosen as a case study. The NL Industries solar system consists of 950 square meters of Del, single-axis, tracking, parabolic-trough, concentrating collectors. It was designee to produce a portion of the 420°. 530°k. steam utilized in a trying operation reduce the moisture content of hectorite ore from 10 percent to 4 percent. (Hectorite is an hydrous magnesium silicate which, when refined, is of significant commercial interest because of its applications in various chemical and food processes.) is estimated that implementation or this solar system could result an annual savings of 3.545 billion KJ ,3.360 billion BTUs), or the equivalent of 90 cubic meters (600 barrels) of oil and a net reduction of 1,860 kilograms (4100 pounds) of air pollutants annually. The technical, economic and institutional issues encountered in the course of this project are also discussed. Finally, the impact of the commercialization of solar energy applications in mineral processing industries is evaluated.

[First of all I want to thank the Society of Mining Engineers of AIME for the opportunity to present what Industrias Penoles, S.A. is doing in Mexico to reach the basic objetive of the enterprise without compromising, in short or long term, the living conditions of the community or attempting in an irreversible form against Nature. Industrias Penoles, S.A. is one of the largest mining and metallurgical companies in Mexico. It was founded in 1887 and at the turn of the century installed a lead smelting operation close to the village of Torreon, which became city five years after the start up of the Penoles smelter. Now Torreon has a population close to 300,000 inhabitants. In 1974 Penoles is still the largest industry in Torreon and the dynamic growth of the city is close related to this factor. Today Penoles in Torreon has a lead smelter with a capacity of 130,000 metric tons/year of bullion, an electrolitic zinc plant of 105,000 metric ton/year, and it is modernizing its lead smelter to control pollution and expand it to 190,000 metric ton/year of bullion including all the services and refinery. The Penoles complex in Torreon is the biggest in the non-ferrous metals field in Latinoamérica.]

This paper discusses grade control of ore mined at Tennessee Copper Company. Mineral zoning and the influence of mineral zoning on production grade are discussed and illustrated. In order to make this most understandable we will first briefly examine the flow sheet at Tennessee Copper to indicate the path followed by the raw material toward its various products. Then we will discuss some of the characteristics of the ore, specifically the distribution or zoning of the minerals in the ore which cause some of the grade control problems. Finally we Will discuss same of the steps that are taken to combat these problems. The flow sheet is illustrated as plate 1. The mined ore is allied to obtain 3 usable products: Copper concentrate, iron concentrate and zinc concentrate. Copper is found in the mineral chalcopyrite, CuFeS2. The Copper concentrate from the mill contains about 20% copper. These concentrates are smelter in reverberatory furnace and Pierce-Smith converter to blister copper containing 99.2% copper. Some metal is cast into 360 lb. pigs and shipped to the refinery. Some is made into shot copper and used locally to make copper sulfate. Copper sulfate is marketed from Copperhill principally in fungicides.

One can hardly discuss coal pneumoconiosis unless it is placed in the context of the total pneumoconiosis problem in the mining industry. However, it might be well if first we defined a few terms, since it has been my experience that the use of the word pneumoconiosis frequently causes con- fusion among those who are not familiar with the term. Pneumoconiosis comes from two Greek words meaning lung and dust. Hence, the word pneumoconiosis simply means dusty lung, or dust on the lung. There are many forms of the disease, some of which are disabling and some are not. Among the many dusts which cause pneumoconiosis might be included silica, asbestos, coal, talc, iron ore, and many other mineral dusts. Silicosis is a specific form of pneumoconiosis. It is caused by the inhalation of excessive amounts of silicon dioxide in the form of crystalline quartz. The disease is manifested by nodulation of the lungs which is apparent on an X-ray film. Continued exposure to silicon dioxide causes the nodules to grow and ultimately large areas of the lung become scar tissue which pre- vents the lung from performing its physiologic function. This is the first in a series of studies commissioned by the European Environment Agency that aim to raise awareness of the use of economic instruments and assess their effectiveness. The emphasis is on sharing good practice and increasing knowledge and understanding across European countries in this emerging policy area. A methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of economic instruments has been developed and this will examine whether the inclusion of economic instruments in complex policy packages can improve the overall performance, particularly as a prevention tool in terms of resource use and waste generation The focus for this initial study is the use of aggregate taxes in four EU countries which include the Czech Republic, Italy, Sweden and the UK so that a range of experiences (e.g. geographical, political etc.) can be included. The findings will be used to inform and influence future policy development in other EEA countries. The methodological approach is divided into two main sections: - Technical analysis, which covers quantitative and qualitative analysis. - Process design, i.e. who should be involved when, where and how. Process design is essential if the full learning benefits are to be gained from the technical analysis, which is the ultimate objective of these evaluations.

The SART process has been developed for Teck to treat bar­ren solution from the cyanidation/CIP process that has been developed for the Lobo-Marte project in Chile. The objective of the process is to recover cyanide in a form that is suitable for recycling to the leaching part of the process. The Marte and Lobo ore bodies require a dosage rate of about 2 kg/t NaCN, of which only 0.5 kg/t is truly consumed (as thiocyanate, cyanate and ferrocyanide species). The remaining -1.5 kg/t is present as cop­per cyanide (-1 kg/t) and free cyanide (-0.5 kg/t), and is poten­tially recoverable and recyclable. SART is an acronym that describes the unit operations in this cyanide recovery process; namely, .. Sulphidization .. Acidification .. Recycling of precipitate " Thickening of precipitate The basic chemistry has been applied previously, and has also been the subject of two patents (American Cyanamid Company, 1965, Potter et al., 1986). The process involves the conversion of all free and WAD cyanide in solution to hydrocyanic acid by acidification of the tailings solution to pH :s,4, and the conversion of all copper in solution to cuprous sulphide (synthetic chal­cocite) by the addition of a sulphide salt:

Until recently, the general expectation among mining compa­nies and financial analysts has been that the price of gold would remain on a generally upward slope. The recent drop in the price of gold has caused many people to re-think the issue. Of course, the price of gold is singularly difficult to predict, so it is difficult to tell which concept is correct. In the present financial situation, however, many junior gold companies are faced with the reality that money is hard to raise, and many senior gold companies find that they are facing a period of corporate losses even though they own solidly producing mines, As engineering consultants, Kappes, Cassiday has recently received several requests to review conventional milling projects to see if heap leaching is a more viable option. In regard to straight financial criteria such as return on investment and net present value, the question is usually fairly easy to answer. However, corporate decisions must often be based on less definable criteria. For instance, new stock issues tend to be more successful if they are larger, which tends to favor milling operations over heap leaches. The corporate issues are often subjective and difficult to generalize about, so I will con­centrate in this paper on a few financial concepts.
