To simplify programming, image analyzers commonly measure either linear intercepts or the areas of particles and grains to determine liberation based on polished section mounts. However, the concentration of minerals by flotation is based on reagents that interact with the exposed surfaces of the minerals. Thus, it is often perceived that image analyzers should measure the perimeter of the mineral of interest in the ore particles. A comparative liberation study of thirteen samples collected from a flotation plant processing a complex base metal sulfide ore showed that the liberation of the ore minerals determined by area measurements is very similar to the liberation determined by the exposed perimeters. The liberation determined by exposed perimeters is more appropriate only for those cases where the mineral texture is so complex that it is retained in the small particles generated in conventional grinding operations. Nowadays there is a greater need for detailed reservoir modelling in the oil industry. It is generally recognized that nearly all reservoirs are heterogeneous and idealization of rock characteristics in flow calculations is unrealistic regarding actual physical and textural conditions encountered in geologic formations. The heterogeneity of oil reservoirs considerably influences the distribution of fluids, as well as their displacement. It would be advantageous if a reservoir petroleum engineer was able to construct a precise mathematical model of the detailed reservoir rock variability characterizing the degree of reservoir heterogeneity in an unambiguous way. This paper presents a geomathematical model describing the spatial behaviour and distribution of the principal reservoir properties. The model is based on the Theory of Regionalised Variables and the Kriging technique. The model is performed by a set of computing programs and is tested on an Abu Dhabi oil reservoir in United Arab Emirates.

Considerable amounts of Fe3+ ions are released into solution when coal is exposed to 1-3 M acid solutions. These ions superficially oxidize the coal surface, and are reduced to Fe2+ ions. When provisions are made to generate the Fe3+ ions in solution, e.g., by inserting an anode whose potential is above the reversible potential for the Fe3+/Fe2+ couple, considerable amounts of mineral matter are liberated from the coal matrix. With many eastern U.S. bituminous coals, this mineral liberation is achieved selectively without significant breakage of the coal. It is believed that this process is induced by the osmotic pressure set-up in the crevices between the mineral matter and coal that are exposed to the solution. A theoretical model predicting the osmotic pressure is presented in this work, along with some results obtained with different coal samples.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The repository is located at a depth of 655 m in the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation, 40 km east of Carlsbad, NM. A key component in the design of the WIPP repository is the installation of concrete structures as panel seals in the intake and exhaust drifts after a panel has been filled with waste containers. The DOE has proposed several panel closure design modifications to the EPA. EPA approval of the changes is required since the details of the designs are specified in EPA’s final rule as a condition for WIPP certification. The Environmental Evaluation Group, in its role of providing technical oversight on the WIPP project, has evaluated the proposed modifications. An analysis of this evaluation is discussed.

"INTRODUCTION Conventional mine planning is performed on a single resource model at a selective mining unit (SMU) scale deemed appropriate for the deposit and mining method. Estimation methods such as kriging and inverse distance, commonly used to construct a single model, are susceptible to histogram smoothing (Rossi & Deutsch, 2014). This can be mitigated by limiting the number of composites per estimate, therefore correctly reproducing the distribution of estimates (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012). Search limiting techniques remedy histogram smoothing at the cost of introducing a problematic conditional bias (Isaaks, 1999) and introduces even greater spatial smoothing. Localization is an alternative, offering histogram reproduction through post processing of more robust probabilistic modeling techniques. A single localized model at the SMU scale is desirable. The correct histogram can be reproduced and a single model allows for the use of conventional mine planning and resource evaluation techniques. Despite the advertized benefits of localization, the necessary reliance on a larger panel scale as a middle step in the localization process yields unsightly “edge-effect” artifacts (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012). Two approaches to artifact reduction are presented here. The first is a straight forward optimization approach designed to minimize an objective function that penalizes artifacts including panel edge discontinuities to generate a model free of panel edge-effects. The second approach redefines a panel in a less conventional fashion as a randomly chosen set of SMUs throughout the domain. This method produces a model void of any regular panel shape resulting in an artifact free model. Artifact reduction minimizes the obvious “edge-effect” issues of localization but local precision issues described by Boisvert & Deutsch (2012) persist. Localization is not a replacement for quantified uncertainty for comprehensive risk analysis and resource evaluation. LOCALIZATION Initially developed with Uniform Conditioning in mind, localization collapses a distribution of local uncertainty at a panel scale to an SMU scale model for mine planning (Abzalov, 2006). This process has been extended to Indicator Kriging (Hardke, 2011), Sequential Gaussian Simulation (Boisvert & Deutsch, 2012) and MultiGaussian Kriging (Daniels and Deutsch, 2014). The localization process is performed in a similar fashion regardless of which technique is chosen to create the prior model of uncertainty. Methodology There are three scales of importance considered in the localization process. The point scale, otherwise known as the data scale, is the smallest and is the scale at which experimental data is collected. The SMU or block scale is the familiar scale at which mine planning and resource evaluation takes place. Lastly, the panel scale is larger and contains a number of SMUs. Each of the three scales is illustrated in Figure 1."

"Shotcrete and mesh are often installed to control ground deformation, falls and ejection between bolts. The combination of mesh and shotcrete forms a panel or plate that is typically bent by ground extruding between restraining rockbolts. The ground pressure applied (that is, the resistance of these panels to bending) over large ground deformations is important for maintaining ground support safety. This paper describes a new test device that measures this resistance and its evolution over large deformations. Mixes of shotcrete, mesh and other components that can maintain significant support pressure are desired, a characteristic described as the “toughness” of support. Results show toughness depends largely on how shotcrete is integrated with other components. Shotcrete strength is less important. INTRODUCTION Ground control safety often depends on supporting, or at least containing, the ground between the rockbolts. Shotcrete and mesh, in various combinations and with other components, are often called upon to do this (Figure 1). Applications are especially common in mines with squeezing ground or seismic loading. The support pressure maintained during ground deformation is key to the performance of these systems, and to protecting miner safety. However, the toughness of a design is difficult to estimate. Researchers at the Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (OMSHR) responded to this deficiency or “gap” by designing a full scale test device, described in this paper, and beginning a testing program. Some initial results from this program are reported to demonstrate test capabilities.BACKGROUND - TOUGHNESS Mining in ground that fails from the combination of in situ and mining induced stress is commonplace. Ground support elements are installed to reinforce such ground and preserve mine safety. Typically, the strength of support is considered key, and is used to prevent or halt yielding. However, ground movements driven by creep of weak ground or seismic loading may be impossible to halt altogether. In these cases, it is essential that support is able to yield with the ground in a safe manner while maintaining confining pressure that mobilizes the strength of rock in the immediate perimeter of the opening. In addition, it’s usually desirable to contain ground between rockbolts to protect miners from loose rock that might fall or be ejected. Shotcrete and screen are often employed, sometimes together and in combination with other support elements, to accomplish this function. A key characteristic of such a system is its ability to maintain support pressure through large ground deformations, a characteristic often called “toughness” – especially in support systems incorporating shotcrete. Toughness can be quantified as the work done during deformation (e.g. force x displacement)."

The pumping of abrasive and sometimes corrosive slurries is normally carried out at modest heads (say 100 ft) with specially designed centrifugal pumps. When heads become higher than this, two or more pumps are used in series but ultimately the system requires staffed pumps with consequent increase of costs. The only other type of pump suitable for high heads is the Ram pump but this is notoriously subject to wear. The paper describes a novel application of the so-called "lock hopper" principle to continuous pumping of slurries. The pump itself is never in contact with the abrasive slurry nor is it subject to head or capacity limitation. It works by displacing slurry with the clear fluid component of the slurry (in most cases water) through cylindrical vessels fitted with plug valves to control the discharge and filling operations. Two such vessels are used and the scheme is completed with a liquid clarifier which allows the pipe flow to be maintained continuously. The paper describes experience on the prototype unit used to discharge tailings from a coal washery in Scotland. A tentative evaluation is also made of the economics of this pump against conventional equipment.

The close-multiple coal seam is an important component of China’s coal resources and plays a key role in total coal reserves. However, the overburden movement in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams is usually extensive, which is seriously affected by overmining. It is therefore essential to study the mechanism of roof breakage, the relationship between the shield and the surrounding rock, and the mechanism of overburden movement to ensure the safe operation and the efficient exploitation of close-multiple coal seams. This work first proposes a technical route for intelligent ground control. Second, the principle of cooperative control between the shield and overburden roof is revealed, and the shield support capacity calculation method is summarized. Third, the quantitative criterion for disturbance degree of key stratum (KSDD) is proposed based on the key strata theory. Finally, several intelligent evaluation and analysis systems have been developed in terms of overburden breakage and shield support capacity, multi-information analysis of ground control, and disturbance degree of overburden. The research results may provide an essential reference for the development of intelligent ground control in the mining process of close-multiple coal seams

Is the Brazilian gold rush over? Judging from the situation in Brazil over the past few decades, the answer is almost certainly yes. The picture of swarms of Brazilian prospectors or "Garimpeiros" crowding or, more correctly, overcrowding the gold regions of the Amazon jungle using the time-aged empirical approach to gold exploration has finally run its course. There are two fallacies that have lead to a reduction in the discovery of new gold fields in Brazil. The first fallacy is that "Brazil's geology is largely unknown." The extreme depth of weathering and the general lack of understanding of the shield deposits are at the origin of this misconception. The second fallacy is that "Brazilian prospectors (`garimpeiros') are very naive, have very little technical knowledge and can only produce gold at very low recovery rates." This is more of a result of wishful thinking for the purpose of justifying limiting exploration programs than it is a real consideration. In this paper, the author takes a methodical heuristic approach to gold exploration in Brazil and offers this as an alternative to the empirical approach of the garimpeiros.

This paper presents several case studies in which a mechanics-based boundary-element program is used to back-calculate the surface subsidence associated with various panels at several northern Appalachian coal mines. The program used in this case study is called LAMODEL, which incorporates a frictionless, laminated overburden into a general-purpose displacement-discontinuity code primarily designed for calculating the stresses and displacements in coal mines or other thin-seam or vein-type deposits. In this paper, the program is used to calculate both the underground convergence and the resulting surface subsidence at five longwall panels and a room-and-pillar section. The fitted subsidence from the model is compared with the field measurements and analyzed. The results from this work show that the LAMODEL program is not as accurate as available empirical subsidence-predictive methods; the expected correlation between the geology and the optimum input parameters is not evident. However, for a mechanics-based program, LAMODEL does provide moderately accurate subsidence calculations, and it is one of a few programs that can even attempt to practically calculate both underground stress and convergence and the resulting surface subsidence.

Mineral exploration is a sequential information gathering process. Primary exploration programs filter favorable areas through a series of geological, geochemical, and geophysical tests resulting in the discovery of mineral occurrences. The most favorable of these discoveries provides economic justification for a delineation drilling program. The purpose of delineation drilling is to provide information for estimating relevant physical characteristics of the mineral occurrence. These estimates are used to evaluate the exploration project and, eventually, the economics of mine development. Delineation drilling normally completes the exploration process. If the assessed economic characteristics of the delineated occurrence provide justification for mine development and production, an economic mineral deposit is the end result of the exploration process. Subsequently, a development drilling program is initiated to obtain the necessary data for detailed mine planning. The delineation drilling stage is in itself a sequential investment process. As delineation information accumulates, the reliability of geological estimates is improved and, thus, the uncertainty associated with the assessment of profitability criteria is reduced. Delineation drilling should continue as long as the marginal benefits, which result from improving the reliability of profitability criteria, exceed the marginal costs associated with the additional drilling.

"A lot of incorrect, dangerous and misleading statements about the effect of CO2 on the human body can still be found in the internet, the media and in books. It is a fact that already low concentrations can lead to critical reactions, higher concentrations cause a narcosis. The real effect is not a lack of oxygen but an inner suffocation. The breathing reflex is decreased and the transport of oxygen in the blood is reduced due to a low pH value of the blood. Furthermore a reduced oxygen content in the air can also lead to the failure of diesel engines. MOTIVE Different gases can appear in active mines as well in abandoned mines, adits and caves. The most dangerous gases are CO, NO/NO2, H2S, SO2, CH4 and CO2. Although the general danger arising from these gases is mostly known some aspects are underestimated. Furthermore misleading or wrong statements exist about the detection and the effect of gases on the human body. This is especially true for CO2. In the last years a couple of accidents happened with a great number of injured persons and unfortunately also some fatalities. As a result wrong information and comments about the effect of CO2 have been published in the media. A huge unexpected CO2 outburst in a potash mine showed again some additional problems and limits for rescue troops. ORIGIN OF CO2 AND MISLEADING STATEMENTS ABOUT THE EFFECT ON THE HUMAN BODYCarbon dioxide can appear as free gas in the earth crust. It is especially known in significant concentrations in some potash deposits, in hard coal mines and some caves. Furthermore it can be formed due to complete oxidation of carbon. It can appear in technical processes. It is also used for or in technical processes, as fire extinguishing agent, as cooling agent, it is contained (added) in sparkling water or other soft drinks and it is formed by fermentation processes. Up to today a lot of wrong information about the effect of CO2 on the human body is published or is still in the mind of many people and unfortunately even in the mind of members or leaders of rescue troops. On August 16th 2008 a faulty CO2 extinguishing installation in the city of Mönchengladbach/Germany caused the injury of 107 people and the evacuation of further 150 people /1/. People on the streets became unconsciousness and felt down. Fortunately all could be rescued due to the immediate rescue operation of local fire fighters. Furthermore the CO2 concentration on the ground was diminished by help of a helicopter. What could have happen with the engine will be discussed later. After 6 days a second similar accident took place /2/. In the news members of the rescue teams explained that CO2 leads to suffocation due to a lack of oxygen. This is wrong! Also cave explorers often say that a burning candle can detect a low oxygen and/or high Carbon dioxide content in the air. This is also wrong and deadly dangerous! Similar statements we find nowadays in the internet /3, 4 and many other/. In a forum “science and mathematics > chemistry” several people say that winegrowers go with a candle into the vine-cellar to detect CO2 /5/. Again: this can be deadly! Another dangerous statement is that CO2 in higher concentrations leads to headaches so people should leave such areas. A last example found in the literature is that at 3 % the breathing volume is doubled and at a concentration of 20 % one can felt some warmth on the skin. Both is not wrong but can lead to false conclusions. /6/"

In a dispersion of particles in liquid a net charge will develop at the particle-liquid interface. This surface charge is usually due to the adsorption of charged material from solution. The existence of this surface charge gives rise to the formation of the electric double layer of counter-ions which surrond the charged particle. The particle surface charge and the electrostatic repulsion which exists between similarly charged particles is the primary stabilization mechanism for lyophobic colloids (1). The separation of charge which occurs at the particle-liquid interface gives rise to several dynamic phenomena associated with colloidal systems or with solid-liquid interfaces in general. These phenomena are known as electrokinetic phenomena and the four classic electrokinetic phenomena are; electrophoresis, electroosmosis, streaming potential, and sedimentation or Dorn potential. The actual driving force for electrokinetic phenomena is not the surface charge per se, but the charge at the interface between the liquid which is hydrodynamically bound to the particle surface and the bulk fluid. This interface is known as the slipping plane or the plane of shear and the potential at this interface is the zeta potential (2). The factors linking the electrokinetic phenomena is that they involve a relative motion between the liquid and the charged particle or solid surface and the driving force is the zeta potential of the solid. In addition to the four classic electrokinetic phenomena there are two additional electrokinetic effects in disperse systems; the electro-acoustic effects. When an alternating electric field is applied to a cooloidal dispersion the particles will move in the field due to their net zeta potential. If there is a density difference between the particles and the fluid this motion will result in the development of an acoustic wave. The effect was discovered at Matec and has been termed the Electrokinetic Sonic Amplitude or ESA (3). ESA is the pressure amplitude generated by the colloid per unit applied electric field strength and has SI units of pascals per volt per meter. When an alternating pressure field (acoustic wave) is applied to a colloidal dispersion the inverse of the ESA effects occurs. A density difference between the disperse phase and the continuous phase leads to a relative motion between the particles and the surrounding liquid. This means that there will be a periodic displacement between the charged particle and the oppositely charged counter-ions in the electric double year. This displacement results in the development of an alternating dipole moment at the frequency of the applied field. This effect is termed the Ultrasonic Vibration Potential or UVP and was first predicted for electrolyte solutions by Debye in 1933 (4). UVP is measured in units of volts per unit velocity amplitude of the applied acoustic field or volts per meter per second. In 1938, Rutgers (5) and Hermans (6) pointed out that the effect would also be present in colloidal dispersions. A detailed theory for UVP effects in colloids, also called CVP, was first presented by Enderby in 1951 (7). Extensive studies of the UVP in electrolytes have been carried out by Yeager et al (8). Recently, O'Brien (9) has developed a general theoretical treatment of electro- acoustic effects in colloids and has derived a reciprocal relation linking ESA and CVP effects. The most commonly studied electrokinetic phenomena is electrophoresis. Electrophoresis is the movement of charges particles in an applied electric field. The velocity of the particle divided by the applied electric field strength is the electrophoretic mobility of the particle. The zeta potential can be calculated from this mobility (2). The magnitude of both the ESA and CVP effects are directly proportional to the electrophoretic mobility of the particles. The mobility determined by the two electro-acoustic effects is the dynamic or AC mobility of the particles.

INTRODUCTION The development of nuclear industry in Taiwan requires an increasing supply of uranium. Uranium recovery from phosphate ores, becomes an important item of the R & D programs. Many countries have already started such a program. USA has set up an industrial-scale production plant; South Africa, Israel, Morocco and other countries have also engaged in the development of extraction technology of uranium from phosphate ores and started setting up the production plant. In Taiwan, a feasibility study of establishing the production plant was started in 1977. A pilot plant was completed, tested, and operated in 1979. The main source material. - phosphate ores is obtained from China Phosphate Company. The annual yield of the pilot plant has been planned to be one ton of ammonium diuranate (ADU). The Health Physics Division of Institute of Nuclear Energy Research (INER), Atomic Energy Council of Republic of China (ROC AEC), is responsible for the radiation safety control of the plant. The purpose of the radiation safety control is to collect radiation safety information of the plant of this type, to evaluate possible radiation hazards to the personnel, and to analyze the radiation safety of the immediate environment adjacent to the plant. Furthermore, the information and experience obtained are used as the basis for applying radiation safety control to the production plant. The main emphases of the radiation safety control are therefore the arrangement of radiation safety control areas and the collection and evaluation of the health physics data. This report includes the past one and half years' experiences of the radiation safety control of the pilot plant, the planning of the production plant with an annual yield of 10 ton ADU, and considerations given in improving the radiation safety control of the production plant. PILOT PLANT AND ITS OPERATION PROCESS The pilot plant occupies an area of 350 m2 and is a two-story rectangular building. Exits are provided by a front and a rear door. An additional small door at the central right side of the building is connected to the maintenance area located outside the main building. The interior of the building is divided into interconnected offices, laboratories and process area (Figs. 1 and 2). A stairway to the process area of the second floor is located in the central part of the first floor. The second floor offices are accessible by the additional front and rear stairways. The main process area of the first floor is furnished with plastic floor, and the second floor with poriferous iron-grid floor. The building is not furnished with centralized air-conditioning system. Individual air conditioners are, however, available to some laboratories. Because the back door of the building is frequently open, the product storage room is provided with a blower to maintain good ventilation. Natural uranium contents of phosphoric acid solution vary in the range from 0.07 to 0.11 kg/m3. The process consists mainly of the uranium concentration cycle and the purification cycle. A flow diagram of the process is shown in Fig. 3. CONSIDERATIONS GIVEN FOR RADIATION SAFETY CONTROL AND THE ESTABLISHMENT OF RADIATION CONTROLLED AREAS The radiation safety control of the pilot plant is carried out on the basis of the considerations listed below:1,2 1) Since the wet process is adopted, and the flow of the radioactive material is confined to closed pipes and containers, air contamination is therefore not too much of concern. 2) The concentrations of radioactive material of the whole process are mostly less than 10 ppm. An exception is the final ADU product after precipitation and centrifugal separation, which contains up to 50% natural uranium. INTRODUCTION FMC's Paradise Peak mine, located 13 Ian (8 miles) south of Gabbs, Nevada, became opera¬tional in April of 1986 (Figure 1). It was designed and built by Davy McKee, who was instrumental in equipment design and selection. It is the 7th largest gold deposit in the United States with defined reserves of 10.9 mt (12 million st) containing 34 million gms (1.1 million tr oz) of recoverable gold and 933 million gms (30 million tr oz) of recoverable silver. The mine extracts ore by the open-pit method, taking advantage of a 1.5:1 stripping ratio. The mill operates at a 3600 mt/day (4000 st/d) capacity. Crushing is done in three stages to achieve an ore size of minus 0.635 cm (0.25 inches). Grinding further reduces the ore to 85% minus 100 mesh. The ground ore is treated with cyanide in agitated leach tanks and then washed in the counter-current decantation (OCD) thickeners. Zinc is added to the clarified, deaerated pregnant solution to precipitate the precious metals. The precipitate is acid digested to eliminate excess zinc, filtered and retorted to drive off contained mercury. The retorted precipitate is then fluxed, melted and poured through cascade molds. Dore bars are cleaned for shipment and the slag is sent to an in-house slag treatment system. ELECTROSTATIC SEPARATION The dry electrostatic slag treatment system at Paradise Peak is the first installation of its kind. Electrostatic separation has been widely used in mineral processing since the early 1950's. A brief discussion of the theory behind the process is helpful to those not familiar to electrostatic separation. Charging and sepa¬rating slags, dry minerals or other materials by ion bombardment is the most common form of electrostatic separation. Millions of tonnes of minerals are processed each year by this method. In an ion bombardment separation, granular material is fed onto a grounded metal cylinder (or roll) and charged by a corona-producing electrode placed above the roll's surface (Figure 2). While both conductors and non¬conductors become charged, only the conductor is able to lose its charge. The charged non¬conductor, as it rests on the roll's surface, "sees" an oppositely charged image of itself in the metal surface. It is attracted to the image charge, becomes electrostatically pinned to, and moves with the roll's surface. The conductive particle also sees an image and is attracted to it. But upon touching the roll's surface, it discharges rapidly to the grounded surface and is thrown free from the roll's surface with a projectile motion. In the case of precious metal slags, the con¬ductive particles would be metallic prills of dore metal; and the nonconductive particles would be the slag, free of metal. Middling grains, generally, are in the form of a metallic prill encased in or incompletely liberated from slag. LABORATORY TESTING A number of precious metal slag samples have been tested in the laboratory. It has been found that the composition of slags vary widely from one refinery operation to another. Typical laboratory procedure is to crush and size the slag followed by two-stage lab-scale electro¬static separation. The conductor fractions from the first and second pass are then combined as a prill concentrate; middlings fraction and clean slag tailings from the second pass are held separate. Selected results from laboratory testing are shown in Table 1. It is important to note in Table 1 that the assays represent overall silver and gold, not metallic values. From experience, the laboratory results are typically lower in grade and recovery than the industrial installations. This is largely due to the hydroscopic nature of precious metal slags coupled with the high local humidity in Carpco's Jacksonville, Florida, location. Verification of computer generated reserve models is essential since the computer does not automatically check the validity of methods and assumptions selected by the user and their results. For the computer to do model verification would require an expert system which would perform tests on the model and determine if the model is valid. Since such an expert system is not available, it is up to users to verify the models they develop.

The Mineral Hill Mine, owned and operated by TVX Gold Inc., is located in the Beartooth Mountains, 5 miles north of Gardiner Montana, U.S.A., which is the north entrance of Yellowstone National Park. Mining is carried out underground using ramp attack cut and fill as well as room and pillar mining. The mine currently employs approximately 145 people and is producing 550 tons per day at a grade of around .21 oz/ton.

At the 1971 Annual Meeting we presented a paper on the results s obtained by wet magnetic separation on very fine, slightly magnetic material . Considerable interest was shown in a corollary subject, namely; on the type of magnetic con¬struction of the Magnetic Engineering Associates (MEA) high-intensity magnetic separator (HIMS). it is the purpose of this paper to describe the principles of this separator and to give answers to many of the questions directed at us both in session and privately since the March 1971 meeting of the AIME. It is well-known that passage of a direct electric current through a wire shaped in the form of a loop results in a magnetic field being created in the volume enclosed within the loop. The magnetic field is proportional to the amperes of electric current passing through the wire. If the wire is in the form of a solenoid consisting of 11 turns, the magnetic field is n times larger. Hence the expression ampere-turns commonly associated with magnetic separators. If a particle, free to rotate and of higher magnetic susceptibility than the medium, is placed in a magnetic field, it will orient itself within that field, and it will move within the field in such a way as to go into a more intense part of the field. The traction on the particle is proportional to its inherent magnetic property which depends on its magnetic susceptibility and its volume, to the mag¬nitude of the field at the spot where the particle is situated, and to the magnitude of the field gradient at that spot. Of the three factors that control traction on a particle in a magnetic field, the magnet designer can effectively control two, the magnetic field and the field gradient. In a wet magnetic separator such as the HIMS magnetic separator, there is another force exerting traction on the particle, and that is the force of the fluid (liquid) on the particle. It is, therefore, essential to examine the relationship of the fluid to the magnetic field. First, assume the water in which magnetic and non-magnetic particles are suspended to be stagnant. In the absence of magnetic field, the only forces acting on the particles are those due to gravitation on the particles and on the fluid displaced. This is the subject, so important in gravity concentration, discussed in elementary texts of mineral engineering'.
