Data from triaxial compression tests per- formed at confining pressures between 0 and 100 MPa are used to evaluate parameters in a contitutive model that is based on microcracking. The tensorial formulation is reduced to equations that are specific to the simple Loading imposed in triaxial compression tests. Procedures for evaluating the model parameters are described, dependence of parameter values on confining pressure is discussed, and prediction of failure is assessed.

A computer model for long-term production scheduling is presented. By combination of different operations research algorithms it has been possible to design a system which is able to solve difficult long-term planning problems. The practical application of the model by a west-german hard coal mine is shown. It is proven that the EDP-model provides substantial support to the planning engineer by solving complex optimization problems.

The Indiana Limestone Company has developed an insulated, thin and comparatively light-weight pane 1 suitable for use as a spandrel panel in a curtain wall. The panel is about four inches thick and is composed of limestone backed with insulation. The inner surface of the insulation is protected with asbestos-cement board or a metal pan, depending on the type of insulation, building-code requirements and appearance (if the surface is left exposed). The limestone is cut to the size of the spandrel openings and the insulation and backup is applied in the mill ready to be shipped and in- stalled in the wall grid, A mortarless and waterproof joint with the metal frame components is achieved through the use of neoprene, thiokol, and caulking, The limestone is "dirt-proofed" (waterproofed) in the mill to slow down discoloration. The panel weighs more than some presently used materials. However, ILCO's architects and engineers have found that curtain wall systems capable of withstanding imposed wind loads are made up of sections large enough to carry this extra load of stone with little or no modification to the size of the metal frame. Limestone, a traditionally sound material, can be used in this new way without losing any of its natural qualities of dimensional stability, resistance to fire, and permanence.

The use of radioactive gages in beneficiation plants is relatively new However, enough applications have been made so that it is now possible to positively state that these gages have definitely progressed from a laboratory device to a very rugged and reliable on stream process measuring instrument. Gamma Ray Gages of the type presently being used in the beneficiation industry consist of three basic components: (1) A source of radiation (2) A radiation detector (3) An electronic amplifier The source is usually a radioisotope such as cesium-137, or cobalt-60. This source, adequately protected and ruggedly mounted, is most commonly placed on one side of a pipe or vessel. The radiation detector is then mounted on the opposite side, Since the absorption of gamma radiation as it passes through various materials is a function of the density of the material, the change in radiation measured by the detector is proportional to the change in specific gravity of the product in the pipe or vessel. One popular type of detector in use today is a cell which converts radioactive energy directly into electrical energy1. This electrical energy, when amplified, presents a usable output for metering and control devices. There are, of course, many other components which are part of a working gamma gage installation, such as zero compensators, lead shielding, mounting brackets, equivalent absorbers, etc.

General. Copper, the first metal used by man, today is the third in consumption after iron and aluminum. Compared to these it is relatively rare, with less than 0.01% of the earth's crust copper, 8% aluminum, and 5% iron. Nevertheless. our modern civilization is heavily dependent upon copper because of its high conductivity and resistance to corrosion, ease of working, durability, wide range of properties by virtue of its readiness to form alloys with other metals, and its attractive colors and texture that make it so desirable for many crafts and arts. These attributes explain why copper is chosen for a long list of uses, including electrical wiring, switchgear, and bus bars; piping, roofing, and siding; and manufactures of brass, bronze, and other alloys. The fact that copper ore is mined in nearly all parts of the world is significant. Its importance is shown in Table I, which gives figures on world production from 1968 to 1977. In the Free World, North and South America and Africa are preeminent. The table also shows the generally upward trend of production in this period; accurate figures for 1978 and 1979 from the same source are not yet available (1980), but it is certain that major environmental, economical, and political factors continued to disturb the industry in those years and into 1980.

Background In the mining industry, conversion of fine particles into a slurry is often part of the normal processing of the ore. Therefore, from a system's point of view, slurry transporta¬tion would be considered as a natural alternative, all the way from the working face to the final processing. In underground mines, there is sometimes a considerable inflow of ground water that has to be pumped out. When the mine dewatering installations are integrated with a hydraulic hoisting system, the cost of power needed to pump out the ground water can be excluded from the cost of hoisting, compared with other modes of transporting the solids to the surface. The chief advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the hoisting capacity can be increased at comparatively low total cost without necessitating the sinking of new shafts. Alterna¬tive examples include deepening of the existing mechanical hoisting system, truck, or conveyor belts transport in ramps to the present level. These often become very expensive. The economic effectiveness of hydraulic hoisting and hydraulic design considerations have been discussed by Kostuik (1965) and Sellgren (1985, 1986) for both small shallow mines and large deep underground mines. Objective and scope The objective of this study was to demonstrate the feasi¬biliy of hydraulic hoisting in hypothetical examples of mine deepening. Underground grinding to a maximum particle size of about 700 um (about 25 mesh) is considered. The pumping of ground ore products with positive displacement plunger or membrane type of pumps at working pressures of up to 15 MPa (2200 psi) is a thoroughly tested technique (Venton, 1986). Hydraulic hoisting system A hydraulic hoisting system is described schematically in Fig. l . The ore is mined, handled, and crushed conventionally. It is then ground wet underground. The slurry is then tempo¬rarily stored in an agitated tank and pumped to an agitated receiving tank on the surface. The ore is then further processed in the concentrator. The capacity of a pipeline is very high. For example, an annual production of 500 Kt (550,000 st) of ore can be handled in a 100-mm-diam (4-in.-diam) pipeline. Systems layout - economic effectiveness Schematic mine layouts are presented that represent situ¬ations where hydraulic hoisting often is the most economical alternative. A situation where the ore is trucked to the level of the existing hoisting system is shown in Fig. 2 (following page). With hydraulic hoisting, only a shaft for ventilation, pipe¬line, and personnel are needed. Coal is expected to play a major role in energy supply in the next 20 years. Oil is a convenient and still reasonably abundant fuel. However, its major sources of supply are regions where there is nervousness about political stability. Uranium is a more efficient fuel - but there is a continuing community apprehension regarding its use. What coal may lack in efficiency, it makes up in long term availability and competitive overall cost. Moreover, diversity of source ensures stable long-term supply. In this way, a major role for coal in the world energy scene is assured. Cyclical considerations aside, demand for coal will increase significantly and it will meet a substantial share of new energy demand, replacing oil and gas in major industrial and electric utility markets. By around the year 2000, coal's share of world energy could reach 30% and rival oil as the largest single source of energy.

INTRODUCTION This presentation is concerned with the administrative and technical capability of the Atomic Energy Control Board (AECB) to assure compliance with the individual exposure limit for radon daughters (currently 4 WLM per year). It is not concerned with the epidemiological bases for setting the exposure limit. Moreover, the intent is to show how sophisticated methodologies and advanced technologies, applied to radon daughter concentration measurements in uranium mines, convey the spirit of compliance by providing better estimates than do the historical methods. These better estimates mean that more accurate and more precise estimates of each worker's exposure are determined using these more modern methods and devices. The estimates so derived should provide more convincing evidence to an individual worker that his assigned exposure is a valid indicator of his true exposure. In addition, a perspective on the exposure estimate in relation to the exposure limit is given as further evidence that an exposure limit is not the dividing line between "safe" and "unsafe" exposures. A brief description is given of the compliance aspects of the Atomic Energy Control Regulations and of the limitations of purely statistical non-compliance procedures. Most of the emphasis of the paper will be placed on the uncertainties associated with conventional radon daughter exposure determination and the means being employed (and anticipated) to reduce these uncertainties. NON-COMPLIANCE Under current Atomic Energy Control Regulations (1978), the annual individual exposure limit for radon daughters is given without reference to the possible methods of sampling and calculation of radon daughter exposure and without any reference to possible uncertainties or their magnitudes. This is common in such statutes, the details of sampling, calculation, error analysis, and so on, being left for licence conditions or provided as a specific guideline to the licensee on the matter of compliance with the Regulation. Since the exposure limit is contained in the Regulations, compliance with it is absolute, as with any other law. In Canada, a state of non-compliance with the radon daughter exposure limit exists when an exposure (attributed to an employee) is reported by the licensee to exceed the limit. No uncertainty in the measurements or in the overall determination of exposure is reported nor is any requested. Removal of the worker and the loss of his services are the immediate and direct penalty suffered by the licensee for failure to maintain the exposure at, or below, the limit. A worker may be re-instated to employment for the balance of the reporting period only if the licensee can assure the AECB that further significant exposure to the worker will not ensue. In other jurisdictions, such as the United States, non-compliance is defined on a statistical basis. For example, NIOSH, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health presents procedures for calculating the 95% Lower Confidence Limit (LCL) in order to "compare the results of occupational environmental sampling to an occupational health standard and make a decision with a known chance of making an incorrect decision that a state of non-compliance exists" (Leidel and Busch, 1975). (In the nomenclature of this presentation, exposure limit would be used in place of "standard", in the NIOSH sense). Furthermore, it is emphasized in the NIOSH document that such numerical comparisons "are necessary only if the sample mean is greater than the standard". The NIOSH document points out, quite correctly, that the "statistical procedures presented below will not detect and do not allow for analysis of highly inaccurate results, i.e., systematic (non-random) errors or mistakes ... If a systematic error is known to exist in an instrument or analytical procedure then correct the sample mean of the data before analyzing for non-compliance". It is certainly not the purpose of this paper to criticize the sophisticated statistical approach to non-compliance as given in the NIOSH document or in similar approaches used in other jurisdictions. Rather, the purpose is to approach, with some introspection, the question of the determination of exposure by the employer for his employee and especially the employee's understanding of, and confidence in, the accuracy of the exposure determination and its relation to the exposure limit. Sodium sulfate is an important industrial chemical. As recently as ten years ago it was produced and consumed in the United States in quantities exceeding 1 Mtpy. Since then, both its production and use have declined; however, approximately half the production still comes from natural sources. [Fig. 1] illustrates the history of production of natural sodium sulfate in the United States. Production of natural sodium sulfate from various types of deposits is the main source of this chemical in Canada and Mexico, and probably in Argentina, Chile, Iran, Spain, and the Russian Republics. MINERALOGY AND PHYSICAL PROPERTIES Sodium sulfate is widespread in occurrence and is a common constituent of many mineral waters, as well as seawater. Atmospheric precipitation contains sulfate; it is one of the major dissolved constituents of rain and snow (Davis and Dewiest, 1966). Many of the saline lakes throughout the world contain varying amounts of sodium sulfate. Because sodium is usually the dominant cation, some workers make an anionic distinction, referring to lakes containing predominantly sulfate as bitter lakes and those containing predominantly carbonate as alkali or soda lakes (Bateman, 1950). Sodium sulfate in its natural form is found in two principal minerals, mirabilite and thenardite. Mirabilite, the hydrous form, is commonly called Glauber's salt. It was discovered by the German chemist, J.R. Glauber (1603-1668), who derived its name from the Latin, sal mirabile, meaning wonderful salt. Thenardite, the anhydrous variety, was named for the French chemist, Louis Jacques Thenard (1777-1857) of the University of Paris (Mitchell, 1979). The largest quantities occur in the form of mirabilite. Sodium sulfate is found in varying degrees of purity, from theoretically pure efflorescent crystals of mirabilite to combinations and admixtures of other salts and impurities. It is a common constituent of some brines; from this source much is extracted commercially. Sodium sulfate also is found in compounds, such as the minerals glauberite, the double salt of anhydrous sodium and calcium sulfate, bloedite, the hydrous double-salt of sodium sulfate and magnesium sulfate, and burkeite, the anhydrous double-salt of sodium carbonate and sodium sulfate. Over 40 minerals contain sodium sulfate in varying proportions; many are of special interest because of their frequent occurrence. Table 1 lists some sodium-sulfate bearing minerals. The reader is referred to other publications (Cole, 1926, Dana, 1932, Grabau, 1920, and Dietrich, 1969) for descriptions of these minerals. Only mirabilite and thenardite will be described herein. Mirabilite Na$04.10H20, contains 55.9% water of crystallization. It is noted for its efflorescence or spontaneous loss of water. On dehydration it changes to the anhydrous form, Na2S0,. Mirabilite is an opaque to colorless, water-soluble mineral that tastes first cool, then slightly bitter. It has a specific gravity of 1.48. It frequently forms as efflorescent, needlelike monoclinic crystals, but generally is found in the massive form. Thenardite, the anhydrous mineral, Na2S04, contains 43.68% Na20 and 56.32% SO3. It ranges from colorless to white and may be tinted shades of gray or brown. It is a water soluble mineral with a slightly salty taste. Its specific gravity (2.67) and hardness (2.5 to 3) exceed those of mirabilite. It commonly occurs in the massive form without visible crystals. Its crystals are frequently tabular pyramids of the orthorhombic system. Sodium sulfate also occurs as a heptahydrate, containing seven molecules of water, but this is unstable and has not been found in the natural environment. The solubility of sodium sulfate has an important effect on the crystallization of the salt in nature, as well as in its production. Its solubility in water generally increases as a nonlinear function of temperature. Below 1.2°C, ice and mirabilite form. As the temperature is increased above O°C, increasing amounts of sodium sulfate become soluble. At 32.4°C, a transition point on the solubility curve is reached, as the decahydrate melts in its own water of crystallization and the anhydrous form crystallizes. With in- creasing temperatures, solubility decreases somewhat. The presence of other dissolved salts changes the transition temperature and solubility characteristics of sodium sulfate.

At the beginning of the previous chapter, variation in the types of room-and-pillar stopes were briefly identified so that the reader could begin to understand the extensive application of this mining system. These same variations will be reviewed and elaborated upon in this chapter while discussing the methods by which the material is extracted. FULL-FACE SLICING BY DRILLING AND BLASTING When the entire mineralized thickness is taken in one pass of mining, it is known as full-face slicing. There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the back. Theoretically, there is no limit as to how high the face could be in a single pass. But there are practical limitations to equipment size, pillar stability, and control of local loose slabs on the face, roof, and pillars that dictate current practices. The range of face height of the 15 typical room- and-pillar mines covered in Table 8 (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) from the Dravo report, 1974 was 1.7 m (5.5 ft) to 9.8 m (32.1 ft), the average being 5.2 m (17.1 ft). In the Gaspe copper mine, Murduchville, Que., the drill jumbos were constructed with an extendable tower for full-face mining up to 15.2 m (49.9 ft) if necessary. However, a more common practice at that mine is to take the ore in multiple slices (Hall, 1959). In many metal mines the normal practice when starting stoping is to drive a single development drift into the ore zone a distance that will allow at least four or five rooms to be opened on each side of the initial drift. Since this opening will probably serve as the main haulage drift, it should be kept as straight and as level as possible. As to the other criteria for the stope developments, it might be well at this point for the mine planner to review the remarks presented earlier (Sec. 1, Subsec. 7) on drifts, entries, and crosscuts for production. After the initial drift is driven, it should be slabbed to the full room width if it is not that wide already. Next, the future pillars should be marked on the ribs and the rooms driven between them. If the ore extends beyond the length of the initial drift and is to be mined in the normal sequence of mining, care should be taken in a random room-and-pillar system to see that the extension of the initial roadway remains straight. If pillar "spotting" is left to the shift foreman or to the miners, they probably will not realize the importance of maintaining a uniform pillar line next to the roadway, and of keeping the line straight. Invariably, a pillar will end up in the middle of the future drift extension resulting in a "dogleg" in a possible main haul- age road. While this error is not catastrophic, too much weaving in and out of pillars will certainly slow down future production haulage and needlessly increase costs. Face or Breast Drilling and Blasting Practices To drill and blast the initial advances into the rock, usually some form of cut pattern must be used. In room-and-pillar mining, when a pattern is drilled in a face and that face is the only exposed surface to which all of the rock must be broken, the pattern is known as a "face round" or "swing." The face to which the rock must be broken is referred to as a "free face." Thus the most common way to advance a room into virgin rock with only one free face is by drilling swings. If, after breaking around a pillar, taking down back, or taking up bottom, there is a second (or third) face exposed, a group of holes drilled nearly parallel to a free face and breaking to it is known as a "slab round" or "slabbing." In some mining districts it is also known as "slashing." Obviously, because two faces exposed offer less resistance to fragmentation than a single face, slabbing requires less drilling and fewer explosives than required to break the same tonnage with the same degree of fragmentation with swings. In my experience, nothing helps me better to get off to a good start in preparing a paper or a talk than a copious consultation with a comprehensive dictionary. I also feel defining the perimeters of a particular subject is helpful to the listener and reader. Sometimes thus precisely defining even the most common of words is helpful. Our general topic this morning as all of you know is "Transportation of Industrial Minerals." The definition of transportation given by the dictionary which I think is appropriate here is: "Systems and modes of conveyance of persons or goods from place to place." Our preceding panelists have outlined for you the state of the art inso¬far as systems and modes of conveyance from place to place are concerned today via rail, water and motor. My assignment is somewhat different as indicated by my topic, "The Traffic Manager in an Industrial Minerals Operation."

Today the longwall is getting increasing attention in the United States as an excellent way to mine coal. This is not to say it is the best way in every mine because conditions, capital costs, and markets may well dictate another method. However, operators with working longwalls are often showing preference by phasing out room-and-pillar sections and replacing them with longwall. In the United States there are about 90 longwalls in operating coal mines and the number is increasing. In Europe, 95% of underground coal mining is by longwall compared with only 5% in the United States. In the Western States about 25% of the underground coal mines use longwall mining. There is logic behind the increase in longwalling. Compared to room-and-pillar mining, straight single-pass longwall has important advantages that show up in underground coal mining in any part of the country.

The Federal Bureau of Mines has developed a chlorine-oxygen leaching technique for the recovery of metal values from lead-zinc sulfide concentrates. Lead, zinc, copper, cadmium, and silver extractions are in the 95- to 99.9-percent range. During leaching, the zinc, copper, cadmium, and silver are solubilized as metal chlorides, and lead is converted to insoluble lead sulfate. The iron contained in the concentrate is converted to insoluble iron oxide, and a majority of the sulfide is converted to elemental sulfur Minor metals such as copper, cadmium, and silver are recovered by precipitation with zinc dust. Zinc is then recovered from the purified zinc chloride solution by evaporation to dryness; the lead is recovered from the leach residue by brine leaching and crystallization to produce lead chloride. Recovery of zinc and lead metals by fused-salt electrolysis of the chlorides is being studied separately.

In the United States there are approximately 155 established operating plants located in 37 states, extending from coast to coast. Silica, in varying degrees of chemical purity, enjoys a very diversified market. Silica is the basic ingredient of glass, bothcontainer and flat glass, and is used for grinding and polishing of flat glass up to the final polishing stages where rouge is generally used. Silica is used for foundry molds and cores, sandblasting, stone cutting, refractories, placing sand in furances, glass coatings and linings, laboratory glassware, construction, oil well fracturing for increased oil flow, filtering purposes, silicate of soda, silicon carbide, and others.

The objective of any business is to maximize the value derived from the commodity produced. There is a point where additional expenditure does not return a value sufficient to justify the additional expense. The treatment of high acid consuming copper ores is a perfect example of this principle in which the relationship of acid consumed to the percentage of Copper extracted is vital to the economic value of the final product. This paper describes a method of evaluating column leach test data to determine the economic optimum conditions for leaching high acid consuming copper ores. The effect of acid consumption on the net economic value of the Copper extracted is very significant in the case of high acid consuming ores. The focus of this paper is the relationship of acid concentration in the raffinate, and acid cure dosage to the economic value of a leach cycle.

Gypsum (CaSO4-2H2O) is an abundant and naturally occurring mineral. Under elevated temperatures (250 to 300°F) gypsum loses its crystalline water and is converted to hemihydrate (CaSO4 -0.5H2O). The hemihydrate form is also called plaster that is widely used in wall- board, joint compound, and many other industrial applications. At temperatures higher than 450°F (up to 1,200°F), gypsum loses all crystalline water and is converted to anhydrite form (CaSO4). The loss of crystalline water at elevated temperatures is an endothermic reaction. This property makes gypsum an attractive filler and fire retardant in certain thermosetting plastics. The applications of gypsum in plastics, food, pharmaceutical, and paper coatings will be reviewed in this paper. The future of synthetic gypsum, a by product of various industrial processes, will also be discussed.

It has never been easy to finance within mining sector. Leasing may be an alternative source of finance for mining investments. Leasing is acquiring the right of usage for an asset for a definite period of time without having the ownership of it. In this study, a model for analyzing the lease financing opportunities for mining investments under risk and suitable for establishing a satisfactory leasing policy for both lessee and lessor is developed. Using the model, it is possible to obtain an expected equilibrium lease amount acceptable by both lessor and lessee and also the expected range of the equilibrium lease amount as a decision tool. First the existing leasing policies are mentioned, then the developed model is described. A case study is presented to illustrate the use of the model in establishing a leasing policy. In conclusion, the usefulness of the model is discussed.

For over thirty years the Population Balance Model, PBM, has been the mainstream modeling method for comminution unit operations and comminution circuits. For commercial comminution circuits the method is based on erroneous physics and dubious numerical mathematical methods leading to non unique solutions that have little extrapolative value and faulty control strategies. In short the PBM is wrong. Given is a detailed analysis showing a number of non trivial flaws in the linear PBM. Moreover, a simpler model is presented that leads to a solution of the comminution circuit predicting the size distribution output over a variety of conditions. Because the linear PBM is firmly entrenched, an award is offered, $10,000, to any researcher that can use the linear PBM and its present numerical methods to predict the typical straight line, self similar, output of wet mills over a variety of grinding times.

This paper summarizes the analyses of ventilation layouts for mines that experience both spontaneous combustion. The major focus is placed on the longwall coal mine layouts used in several countries. Each of the different layouts is modeled in the form of a ventilation network. The gob of a longwall panel is the most critical location for the occurrence of spontaneous combustion. Airflow leakage paths inside the gob are simulated by using a simplified grid-like network. Computer simulations with this model indicates that the W-system of ventilation is most effective in minimizing air leakage into the gob. Homer, the U-system of ventilation, with pressure balancing behind the face support line, is also found promising for longwall panels. The magnitude of air leakage into the gob is observed to change with the advance or retreat of bee, thus requiring appropriate balancing of pressure to maintain the leakage at a minimum.
