Introduction Inorganic depressants are chemicals added to the froth flotation process to maintain or produce hydrophylic surfaces on one or more minerals so they will remain in the pulp rather than attach to the air bubbles. Whether a depressant will be effective in depressing a given mineral depends on how it is used and the environment in which it is used. Some depressants must be added and conditioned into the pulp before the collector is added. Other depressants can be added in the presence of previously added collectors and effectively depress the desired minerals. Often the concentration of depressant relative to the collector concentration is critical to making an economic separation. It should be noted that some depressants will only work when specific collectors have been used. Some reagents such as sulfuric acid and hydrogen peroxide essentially act as depressants by altering the previously added collectors so that they are no longer effective. Some depressants such as sodium ferrocyanide are only effective in a very limited pH range and an essentially collector free environment. Major Depressants CaO Milk of Lime is by far the most used depressant both in tonnage and dollar value. Although it is most commonly listed as a pH modifier, it is also an important depressant for pyrite in copper and copper molybdenite flotation plants. Although a simple pH adjustment will often depress pyrite, there are times when grinding with fresh milk of lime is required to obtain optimum depression. Lime is also a molybdenite and gold depressant. NaSH Sodium hydrosulfide is by far the most commonly used reagent to depress copper and iron sulfide minerals in by-product molybdenite flotation plants. NaSH also depresses gold, silver sulfides and silver chloride. ZnSO4 Zinc sulfate is commonly used to depress sphalerite in lead-zinc and copper-lead- zinc flotation plants. It has also been used to effectively depress talc in by-product molybdenite circuits at a pH of 6.5.

The effective staffing of personnel in a new concentrator facility is a key factor in the success of the operation. By selectively recruiting quality individuals, a company is in a strong position to build a positive work ethic which will become an integral part of it's culture. And culture, which is a set of standards that all employees work to uphold, is that intangible as- set that often determines whether or not a company will survive during difficult economic times. Recruiting and placement of personnel in a concentrator facility requires an emphasis on planning. Management must carefully analyze the following elements when designing a hiring plan: 1. Number of positions 2. Hiring schedule (timetable) 3. Critical positions 4. Lead-time for trainee posit ions 5. Characteristics of the ideal workforce This presentation will focus on a proven system that is efficient (and yet simple) for achieving a new concentrator facility's manpower requirements. IDENTIFYING THE STAFFING NEEDS As previously stated, the key to staffing is planning. Management will find that a basic manpower chart will provide the hiring schedule to meet deadlines. In fact, this system begins with a manpower chart (Figure 1). The chart basically works in reverse of the hiring requirements: the last scheduled hire is the first job on the list. This approach ensures that the company will not find itself compressed against the facility start-up date. A cardinal rule in recruiting a workforce is to allow sufficient time to orient and train employees to the procedures and culture of the system. Problems in selection of personnel begin when the hiring program is short-circuited for timing reasons. The quality of employee selected invariably suffers accordingly. The second section is the key to the success of the manpower program. This is the latest date by which a formal recruiting effort must begin in order for the hire date to be met. Leadtimes are usually as follows: 1. 90 days for company transfer positions 2. 60 days for experienced new hire positions 3. 30 days for trainee positions

CalMat Co. is one of the largest producers of construction aggregates in the United States. The CalMat Reliance plant is located in Irwindale, California, and is situated on an alluvial fan formed by the San Gabriel River. The fan deposits are of Quaternary age and were derived from granitic and metamorphic bedrock exposed in the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. The sediments are poorly sorted and range in size from large boulders to clay size particles. The coarse material is hard and durable and consists of quartz diorite, granodiorite, granitic gneiss, schist and minor amounts of volcanic rock. The matrix is comprised of silty sand with varying amounts of clay. Thin silt and clay lenses occur sporadically throughout the deposit. The clay content of the matrix and the degree of weathering of the coarse material increases with depth. Based on seismic data, the alluvial fan varies from 200 to 400 feet thick and overlies crystalline bedrock. The Reliance plant was constructed in 1971 and 1972. It has a nominal capacity of 1200 to 1400 tons per hour, and typically produces more than three million tons of aggregate products per year. Alluvial fan sediments are mined from a gravel pit situated adjacent to the plant. The material is fed through a mobile, 48- by 60-inch, in-pit jaw crusher, then transported by conveyor to the main plant to be processed. The plant is modern and highly efficient. It has a typical wet and dry circuit and is capable of producing a wide range of aggregate products. To extend the life of the plant, a 9,000 foot conveyor system is being constructed to connect it to a granite quarry operated by Azusa Rock Inc. The quarry is located north of Irwindale, and is 50 percent owned by CalMat Co. The conveyor will be used to export crushed rock from the quarry to Reliance. The existing plant will be modified to process the crushed rock.

Once considered the dowdy country cousins of the glamorous metallics, industrial minerals are shedding their old image. They are neither common nor easy and their time has come in an age of increasing specialization. Consider that of the 45 or so industrial minerals and rocks listed in [Table 1], almost three-quarters have ten or fewer significant suppliers (i.e., those individual countries contributing 2% or more of total world production); in more than half the cases, 85% of world production is accounted for by only five countries or fewer. Curiously, even materials that appear to be virtually ubiquitous like crushed rock and common salt have significant production vacuums. For example, there is a severe lack of sound aggregates along the US Gulf Coast and common salt production on a large scale is virtually absent in central Africa. These examples all underline the obvious, but acute truism that "The single most important fact about mineral resources is that they are not distributed equally over the world" (Flawn, 1966). Just as significant today is that human resources are not distributed equally over the world, and so arise some interesting commercial incongruities. In certain regions raw materials are plentiful but consumers are not, and without a market a mineral deposit is merely a geological curiosity. Elsewhere, there may be a market but no local raw material supply. For example, despite a huge market there is no or virtually no commercial production of chromite, diamonds, and manganese in the United States and Canada, nor phosphate rock, diamonds, rutile, and zirconium minerals in western Europe. In contrast, Australia with its small domestic market is the world's largest supplier of bauxite, diamonds, ilmenite, natural and synthetic rutile, and zircon; the same is true for South Africa which is a leading producer of chromite, manganese, diamonds, andalusite, ilmenite, rutile, and zircon (Table 2). In the commercial world, Nature's uneven distribution is counterbalanced by deep sea international trade.

J. Dasher Regarding the March 1991 ME technical paper by De Souza and Moore: For more than a decade since my February 1981 article on how to use modern metric, which SME-AIME had decided to do, I have monthly pointed out metric errors to the editors. In part, I do this because there has been no action to allow editors to fix figures and tables or to allow them to require authors to do so. The latest resulting atrocity provokes this discussion of vibrating drill handle units being stated in decibels. Reply by T. Moore We have read the discussion of our paper by Mr. Dasher. Our reaction is one of surprise and incredulity. It would seem that Mr. Dasher takes exception to the use of the decibel scale to present vibration acceleration data, and the use of hertz as the unit for frequency. The basis for his objection to the decibel appears to be that it has no dimensions (which somehow invalidates its use), that it is "non-metric" and, finally, that it is parochial (of limited or narrow scope). His objection to the use of the term hertz is not stated, but we will assume that it stands condemned as "non-metric" and parochial. Obviously we disagree with Mr. Dasher's views and will now outline our reasons. Although the decibel scale originates from transmission line theory and telephone engineering, it is also at present widely used, not only in the fields of electronic engineering and acoustics, but also in the area of vibration. The original definition of the decibel (dB) was based on power ratios: dB = 10 log 10(W/W0) where Wo is a reference power. However, as the power measured across a given impedance is related to the square of the force acting upon this impedance, Z, a more commonly used definition is: [2 dB = 10 logF /Z) = 20 log F/F 10\ F0 2 /Z(0)] where F and F0 are the r.m.s. values of the forces. Now, if the measurements are related to one and the same impedance, the decibel notation in the form of 20log10(X/Xo) may be used as a convenient relative magnitude scale for a variety of quantities. Thus, X may, for instance, be an r.m.s. displacement, velocity or acceleration. It is only required that XD always be a reference quantity of the same type as X. That is, when X represents an acceleration, then X0 represents a reference acceleration. This is the formulation used in our paper. This was not an arbitrary choice on our behalf but reflects standard practice as specified in the International Standard ISO 5349-1986(E) Mechanical Vibration - Guidelines for the Measurement and the Assessment of Human Despite the metric prefix, the decibel is a parochial expression of (l) the logarithmic ratio of the loudness of a sound to what is normally audible or (2) the logarithmic ratio of two power signals in radio or electronics. A decibel is not a unit, much less an SI, unit and has nothing whatsoever to do with the acceleration of drill handles. Stating that m/s2 (acceleration) is decibels is without reason. Whoever reviewed this material should not have allowed publication of figures of dB and H.[ ] Exposure to Hand-Transmitted Vibration. This was clearly stated in the "measurement protocol" section of our paper. This quantity is then referred to as the acceleration level and is expressed in dB. We may have inadvertently caused some confusion when we simply used the term acceleration to refer to acceleration level on our diagrams. At the time, we felt the use of dB or m/s2 would make the context clear to the reader. For any confusion this decision may have engendered, we apologize. Since the decibel expresses the ratio of two like quantities, it certainly has no dimensions. It is, however, common practice to treat "decibel" as a unit as, for example, in the sentence, "The acceleration level measured at the operator's hand was 160 dB." The expression of measured quantities in dimensionless form is not inherently unacceptable. In fact, in many areas of engineering it is standard practice (consider the use of Reynolds Number, Nusselt Number, etc.). The fact that the decibel is a dimensionless quantity makes the question of whether it is a SI unit nonsensical. However, it is valid to insist that the dimensional quantities used to obtain the decibel values be expressed in SI units. A careful reading of our paper will make it clear that the measured acceleration was, in fact, expressed in units of m/s2 as was the reference acceleration (l x 10-6 m/S2). These are the accepted derived SI units for acceleration. See, for example, the standard ASTM E380-89a Standard Practice for Use of the International System of Units (SI) (The Modernized Metric System). Concerning Mr. Dasher's implication that hertz (Hz) is an unacceptable unit of measure for frequency, we would again refer him to the standard ASTM E380-89a. Here, he will find (section 2.4.2) that hertz is an accepted "special name" for the derived SI units-1. This is in keeping with numerous other international standards including ISO 5349-1986(E) to which we referred in our paper. In conclusion, we agree with Mr. Dasher on the desirability of expressing measurements in modern SI units. But we would remind him that the standards that define the use of these units, and the accepted means of presenting measured data, are in a continual state of refinement. It is, therefore, incumbent upon him to keep abreast of these changes if he wishes to constructively critique the work of others.[ ]

Introduction Modern longwall mining, introduced to the US coal industry in the mid-1960s, is the latest coal mining technique. Today, longwall mining produces more than 15% of all underground coal production. The growth of longwall mining in the US is slow. However, nearly two decades of longwall mining have demonstrated that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages. Longwall Advantages Production and Economics - A typical longwall production ranges mostly from 0.9 to 1.8 kt (1000 to 2000 st) of clean coal per shift. This is about three to six times the production of comparable continuous mining units. Furthermore, there are much less rejects in longwall mining, typically 15% to 25%. It must be noted, however, that a new longwall with an inexperienced crew may produce less, depending on mining conditions. But as experience gains, production increases rapidly. Due to its high production, the cost per ton of coal mined over the mine's lifetime is cheaper with longwall mining than with continuous mining. A study on a conceptual mine of 25 year life using actual operational data (Dangerfield, 1981) concluded that the cost per ton of coal mined is 32% cheaper by longwall than by continuous mining. Another benefit from its high production potential is that it enables the production to be concentrated in a few longwall faces versus many units of continuous mining required to achieve a similar production. As a result, mine organization and management simplify considerably. Safety and Savings - Most US longwalls use shield supports that cover the roof with solid canopy and isolate a gob completely from the face area. Thus, if the supports are properly selected and operated, the potential for roof fall accident is almost zero. Furthermore, it is not unusual that a well-run longwall face is much more orderly and cleaner that most well-run machine shops. The ventilation system for longwall mining is the most ideal type. It is simple and unique. No auxiliary fans are required. The fresh air sweeps through the whole face. Its volume and velocity can be adjusted as demanded. Recovery - In spite of multiple entries layout for US longwall panels, the longwall method recovers up to 40% more coal than the continuous mining method (Dangerfield, 1981). The typical recovery for longwall mining is 70% to 85% versus 45% to 80% for continuous mining. Versatility - Longwall mining has been employed successfully in seam heights ranging from 0.8 to 3.7 m (2.7 to 12 ft); in seam inclinations from horizontal to 35°; in overburden depths from 46 to 914 m (150 to 3000 ft); in single or multiple seam mining; and in uniform or irregular seam characteristics. For seam height less than 1.2 m (4 ft), the plow is used instead of a shearer. However, in spite of recent developments, the plow still is unsuitable for hard coal seams. Slow Acceptance How come longwall mining, with so many advantages, has not spread more rapidly? Undoubtedly, the major reason is the large capital investment required. Under normal market conditions, the capital required for a longwall panel ranges from $7 to $11 million. Another factor is the uncertainty of its applicability to any specific coal seam of interest where longwall has not been used or operated successfully. Although longwall mining elsewhere has proven its applicability to wide-ranging seam conditions, there have been several failures in the past two decades. Analyses of those cases show that most failures can be attributed to inexperience, both operational and technical, including equipment selection. Therefore, personnel training on the longwall mining technique is absolutely necessary before its initial operation. Some earlier statements about adverse surface subsidence associated with longwall mining were misleading. Research has proven that surface subsidence under longwall mining is controllable and predictable. And, if longwall mining was mandatory since the onset of coal mining in the US, there would be no surface subsidence problems over abandoned mined land today. Classifiers that are used to separate granular materials into a coarse and a fine stream, are considered. Fundamental Equations are presented which apply to all, such Classifiers and all feed size distributions. The practical, real Classifier is compared quantitatively with the perfect. Classifier. A Formula is introduced for the Real Classifier Selectivity, that defines what portion of each particle size is sent to the coarse outlet duct. This selectivity function is characterized by three Parameters, one of which (b) is a numerical measure of the sharpness of classification. A new dimensionless variable (J) appears in Equations and Graphs for recirculating load, product size distribution and specific surface in the classified product. This variable combines the effects of sharpness of separation, Classifier setting and fineness of a Rosin-Rammler Type feed to the Classifier. Classifier efficiency is defined, based on Specific Surface.

A discussion of the practicalities of carrying out a material balance using simple nodal sensitivity analysis is given. The calculation of the errors involved is reviewed and the concept of co-variance examined through computer simulation. The use of co-variances in such calculations is shown to be practically insignificant. The method proves to be rapid and relatively accurate provided the circuit topology is correct.

Induced seismicity is deeply related to various engineering projects entailing anthropogenic in-situ stress change in deep underground. Hence, there is a persistent demand for estimating and mitigating the risk. Significant efforts have been made in simulating induced seismicity with a variety of numerical simulation techniques; however, there are still discrepancies between characteristics of induced seismicity numerically simulated and observed in the field. One of such discrepancies is the simulation of triggered seismicity defined as seismic events caused by an infinitesimal amount of anthropogenic stress change, which is frequently observed in geological structures. The present study aims to develop a methodology to simulate triggered seismicity whilst reproducing a complex stress state in a fault zone. For the purpose, a discrete fracture network within a fault damage zone is first generated. Then, an equivalent continuum model, in which each zone has a different anisotropic compliance tensor, is constructed by employing the crack tensor theory. A fault core is simulated at the center of the model with interface elements. Using the equivalent continuum model, an initial stress condition is simulated with the boundary traction method, which results in a very complex stress state with stress anomalies due to the stiffness anisotropy and heterogeneity. Subsequently, the effective normal stress on the fault plane is decreased in a stepwise manner to induce slip. The result demonstrated that many seismic events are induced on the fault plane with a slight decrease in the confining stress, thus being regarded as triggered seismic event. Further analysis on this seismic activity shows that the magnitude of triggered seismic events is inconsistent with the amount of shear stress drop, implying that a relatively small triggered seismic event could produce a large stress drop, generating locally intense ground motions and thus inducing severe damage to the nearby rock mass.

During the cyanide leaching of gold ores containing copper minerals, aurocyanide (Au(CN)f) is produced and typically recovered using activated carbon. However, free cyanide, as well as cyanide associated with cuprous cyanide complexes, are generally not recovered from the barren liquor. This results in a significant economic penalty in high cyanide consumption due to the dissolution of copper. 1\vo different configurations of a novel method for the treatment of barren liquor streams for cop­per recovery and cyanide recycle are described. Recovery of copper and cyanide is affected using solvent extraction (XI 7950). Loaded organic is stripped with a high copper, high caus­tic solution which is electrowon to produce copper metal. Depleted electrolyte is treated with sulfuric acid to recover cyanide which is returned to the leaching circuit. Results of benchscale and mini-pilot plant experiments are presented.

This paper investigates variations of lignite quality attributes with geostatistical methods. The study focuses on lignite from the Southern Field in the Greek province of West Macedonia. The targeted quality variable is the ash water-free content (AWF). A geostatistical model is constructed based on data from 480 drillholes (approximate drill hole spacing of 250m). For each drillhole, the vertical average of the AWF is calculated. The coarse-grained AWF is then modeled as the superposition of a trend surface and fluctuations. The spatial dependence of the fluctuations is modeled by means of the experimental variogram. Kriging estimators are used to determine the AWF values on a rectangular grid, and the uncertainty of the estimates is calculated. Implications of the analysis for the variability of the produced lignite are discussed, and recommendations for additional drilling are proposed.

A ventilation system is described using dual aircourses: one zone occupied by working personnel, the other at the active working face. The two zones are separated by a partition or Shroud. The occupied zone to the rear of the face zone is ventilated adequately but with considerably less air because little gas, dust, or fumes are present. The face excavating zone is sealed and maintained at slightly more negative pressure preventing dust and gas generating from within to escape. Explosive mixtures within the face zone is rendered non-explosive by the introduction of inert gas therein. Each zone is vented separately to the outside of the mine. Because less total quantity of air is required for human breathing, etc, the total ventilation system can be drastically reduced in tan capacity, development entries, and air shafts, -- a great savings in costs.

The silicates represent the largest and most common group of minerals on earth. Yet in spite of the chemical similarities, numerous mineral processing plants worldwide are operating successfully to yield varied commercial products for numerous uses. The silicates that are commercially produced in the United States by flotation include quartz, feldspar, mica, spodumene, talc, kaolin, and wollastonite. The operation of several plants and the conditions affecting mineral separation by flotation are described. Because the process is usually dictated by the desired market, specifications for the most common products are provided. Potash is a basic fertilizer component, along with phosphate and nitrogen. Potash is typically produced from underground evaporite beds or recovered from natural brine solutions. Flotation of potash is unique in that it is processed in a saturated salt solution. The potash flotation process is outlined and several commercial operations are described.

BHP Diamonds is developing Canada's first diamond mine, Ekati, located in the Northwest Territories (NWT). The mine is a joint venture between manager and operator BHP (51%), Dia Met Minerals (29%), Charles Fipke (10%) and Stuart Blusson (10%). BHP Diamonds is part of BHP Minerals: Production at Ekati began Oct. 14,1998. The mine is situated on a 3,450-km2 (853,000-acre) claim block located in the Lac de Gras region of the NWT (Fig. 1). It is about 300 km (185 miles) northeast of Yellowknife and 100 km (60 miles) south of the Arctic Circle. The seasonal winter ice road to Echo Bay's Lupin Mine passes along the eastern margin of the project area. This allows road access each year from mid-January to mid-April. For the remainder of the year, the project is accessible only by air.

"In urban areas, it is often required to construct additional railway tunnels beneath existing railway tunnels. In this case, dynamic interaction between tunnels at the intersection becomes an important issue, as it amplifies structural behavior causing damage to structures and inconvenience to passengers. In this study, vibration superposition effect at the intersection between existing and newly constructed tunnels is investigated by the numerical method. Dynamic interaction mechanism is firstly examined using simple sine wave load, and then a typical analysis for actual multi-leveled tunnel intersection is performed. The results show that the dynamic amplification due to dynamic interaction of tunnels is 149% at the crown of lower tunnel. This indicates that the vibration superposition effect must be considered when the planning and design of a new tunnel beneath the existing tunnel. 1. INTRODUCTION In these days, there are increasing cases that trains cross without transfer stations in metropolitan areas. Consequently, either tunnel is necessarily to be neighboring or crossing, thus tunnel sections closely located are created as shown in Figure 1. If a new tunnel is constructed beneath the existing tunnel, the vibration due to trains passing through each tunnel can mutually affect. The behavior of coupled vibrations may occur and exceed the allowable structural limit, and cause inconvenience to passengers. Theoretically, when vibration waves are propagated from a source to different locations, amplification or decrease of the vibrations can occur by the principle of wave superposition and interference. Multi-leveled tunnel intersection is one of the cases mentioned above. In the actual tunnel, it is difficult to investigate the vibration superposition effect due to a complex ground conditions and structural geometries. In addition, train vibration itself is multi-source vibration, which cannot be theatrically analyzed. Thus, at the tunnel intersection, train vibration from two tunnels make the problem more complicated."

Mooranbah North is a new greenfield project in Australia's Bowen Basin that is projected to produce 4 mtpa of hard coking coal from a single longwall. Located in Central Queensland in Australia's northeast, this is one of Australia's main coal producing regions. From the outset, Mooranbah North's approach to equipment selection has differed markedly from that usually taken in the mining industry, and the conveyor industry in particular. Until recently, no performance requirements have been placed on conveyor equipment suppliers. This arose from a practice of purchasing components in an ad-hoc manner from a variety of sources, and the mine then configuring the system. More recently, single source supply has been adopted as a means of obtaining some performance guarantee, usually expressed in terms of system availability. Unfortunately, the term "availability" has a multitude of definitions, particularly in the underground coal sector. A conveyor availability of 98% is a common goal but this rarely means the conveyor must operate 165 hours/week, 52 weeks/year. There are mines that have one maintenance shift for each production shift and claim availability of 100%. What is meant is that no down time is logged to the conveyor during the hours that it is wanted. This "generous" definition of availability would not be tolerated in many industries and nor should it. Unfortunately, a true definition of availability, such as is applied to steam turbines in the power generation industry, is not particularly helpful. Five day/ week operations would immediately face a 28% penalty against 7 day rosters, and there would be no sensible manner in which weekend maintenance could be incorporated into the availability formula. The approach adopted by Mooranbah North was to specify a period of "Failure Free Operation," which would be followed by a maintenance period. This

Gold in many ores occurs in sulphides, which, if the gold is finely disseminated, renders the ore refractory and therefore not amenable to the simple process of milling and cyanidation. Traditional methods of treatment of these refractory ores is to produce a sulphidic flotation concentrate which is roasted to form a porous calcine from which the gold is recovered by cyanidation. The roasting process imposes a constraint of a minimum sulphur grade of the concentrate on the flotation plant, which may lead to a lower gold recovery being achieved in the flotation section. Thermal decomposition of the concentrate by roasting means that the sulphur contained therein has to be treated and disposed of in an environmentally acceptable manner; and, if arsenopyrite is present in the concentrate the environ- mental aspects will be worsened. It has long been recognized that finer milling of gold-bearing materials improves the liberation of gold, especially when the gold particles are very fine. After extensive laboratory and pilot plant investigations (Liddell, Patents), a suitable mill has been developed for the mining industry by Metprotech, which is capable of producing very fine grinds (down to 90 percent passing one m if necessary). In the course of the investigations it has been found that a large number of gold-bearing materials are amenable to fine milling. A specific advantage that fine milling of sulphidic materials has over oxidative processes such as roasting and bacterial leaching is that the sulphides are not decomposed and there is therefore not a sulphur disposal problem. INTRODUCTION A trend which is obvious in the United Kingdom and is thought to be evident in other parts of the Western world is the disproportionate rise in the cost of tunnel mining labour compared with other tunnel cost increases. This disproportionate increase in labour costs has been accompanied by, and may be the result of, a shortage of skilled working labour. To combat this problem there has been a steady increase in the use of machines for excavation and for the erection of tunnel linings to keep the amount of skilled labour working below ground to a minimum. The typical tunnelling cycle, where the ground needs continuous support can be excavation, temporary support, temporary lining, grouting and permanent lining. It is obviously an advantage to combine as many of these operations as possible and carry out as much as possible by machine. Machines have been developed which will, either alone or used in combination with a shield, excavate and, when necessary, temporarily support the excavation. If a segmental lining is used, it can be so designed that it will form the permanent lining and reduce the cycle time and skilled labour requirement to a minimum. In cases in which the ground can be cut accurately to a smooth profile and will stand without support for a sufficient time, the lining can be expanded against the ground and the necessity of grouting eliminated. In cases in which ground will not stand without support, the usual method is to use a bolted lining and to grout behind it preferably as the shield is shoved forward. The Meikle Mine uses long-hole open stoping and cut-and-fill methods with backfill as the primary ground support technique. The mine operates at 2,858 tonnes per day (3,150 tpd) and has sustained operation in excess of 3,175 tonnes per day (3,500 tpd). Consistent backfill production is critical in achieving these mining rates. The heart of the system is a 7.65 cubic meter (10-cyd) horizontal shaft ribbon mixer located 328 m (1,075 ft) underground. System control is through several PLC's, allowing for a high degree of automation and process flexibility. Aggregate feed is routed 257 m (842 A) through vertical drop pipes in the ventilation shaft, a rockbox, transfer raises, and then into either of two raisebored storage silos. The aggregate is crushed mine waste, nominally 70% 3.8 cm x 1.0 cm (1-1/2"x 3/8") and 30% -1.0 cm (- 3/8"). The binder is routed through a vertical borehole, surge bins, and transfer raises. The binder is a mixture of Type II cement and fly ash. Two primary manufactured fill designs are produced: a high strength mix for stopes which will be undercut; and a low strength mix for stopes with only rib exposure. The high strength target is 5.5 Mpa (800psi) unconfined compressive strength in test cylinders. The low strength target is 2.8 Mpa (400 psi). The systim has allowed consistent achievement of these targets, while experience has allowed reduced costs and increased efficiencies. Fill placement is through 6.1 cubic meter (8 cyd) LHD's dumping into stopes. Specific sills and cut-and-fill drifts are jammed to the back. System enhancements have included colloidal mixers for cemented waste slurry placement and transfer raises for sending manufactured fill to the lower levels of the mine.

Common carbon dioxide capturing reagents, such as amines and sodium hydroxide, are expensive, toxic, and energy intensive to regenerate. We have added frothers to a sodium carbonate solution in order to increase the surface area available for CO2 transport within the packed bed of a counter current scrubbing column. Addition of frothers has improved the performance of sodium carbonate scrubbing solutions to be on par with sodium hydroxide scrubbing solutions. This novel enhancement of a relatively inexpensive CO2 capture-regeneration cycle shows potential to allow plants to turn a profit by sequestering a waste product. These results are discussed in detail in the following manuscript. INTRODUCTION The combustion of fossil fuels converts chemical energy to thermal energy. CO2 is produced as a byproduct of the reaction. 80% of the world’s electricity is produced by using this thermal energy to power a generator, accounting for 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions. In an effort to stabilize the rising atmospheric CO2 levels, researchers are investigating the application of carbon capture and storage (CCS) systems in power plants. [1] Efforts to capture CO2 at some power plants have been successful, but the cost of installing and operating the required equipment is high. As such, very few power plants have CCS systems. If CO2 can be captured and processed into a product that can be sold at a profit, installing CCS systems in power plants will be a very attractive business decision. In order for the sale of captured CO2 to become a profitable venture, the cost of capturing the CO2 from a flue gas must be reduced. BACKGROUND The most common method for separating CO2 from a flue gas is by passing it through a counter-current packed bed scrubbing column. The flue gas enters the bottom of a column while a solution of a chemical with properties advantageous to the absorption of CO2 is pumped to the top. The fluids interact in a packed bed, where the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid. CO2 is an acid gas, so it is common for the scrubbing solution to be alkaline in nature in order to neutralize the carbonic acid that is formed when it is dissolves into water. The exhaust exits the top of the column free of carbon dioxide, which exits the column in the scrubbing solution, reacting or complexing with the absorbent. Figure 1 is a schematic drawing of a CO2 scrubbing column. It shows the molar flowrates and compositions of the gas and liquid at the bottom [1], the top [2], and an arbitrary height in the column [Z]. [2,15] L is the molar flowrate of liquid at any point in in the column. G is the molar flowrate of gas at any point in the column. Since the CO2 is transported from the gas to the liquid, L and G are variable with respect to height. To simplify calculations, the CO2 free molar flowrates Ls and Gs are often used. X is the fraction moles of aqueous CO2 per mole of CO2 free liquid. Y is the fraction moles of gaseous CO2 per mole of CO2 free gas. Figure 2 is a composition diagram of the scrubbing column depicted in figure 1.
