Construction aggregate is the most important nonmetallic-mineral commodity in quantity and value that is produced in Wisconsin. Crushed stone is produced from the Precambrian crystalline rocks and the Ordovician and Silurian carbonates, and sand and gravel is extracted from Quaternary glacial deposits. Dimension stone is quarried from both the Precambrian crystalline rocks and Paleozoic carbonate rocks. Other nonmetallic minerals include industrial sand, lime, roofing granules, terrazzo aggregate, and peat.

Profit, product quality, speed of operations, reliability, operator confidence, safety and environmental improvements have all been enhanced as a result of the recently completed maintenance, renovation and construction program at Crown Central Petroleum Corporation?s (Crown?s) coke calcining unit at its Pasadena, Texas refinery. (Figure 1) BACKGROUND The calcining unit was built in 1969 - 1970 and has been operated continuously. Approximately 400 to 500 TPD of high quality metallurgical grade coke is manufactured, stored, and shipped to consumers. About 1/2 of the feed stock to the calciner is manufactured in Crown's coking unit and the remainder is received, via barges, from various sources. The green coke is off loaded from the barges with a conventional grab crane that discharges into a small travelling hopper over a conveyor belt that feeds a radial stacker, which forms a stockpile on the ground. The green coke, from the coking unit at the refinery, is moved to the calcining unit with front end loaders. Reclaiming from the stockpiles is also done with front end loaders. The coke is primarily handled by covered conveyor belts. The finished product is stored in steel silos and can be shipped via railroad cars, but the majority of it is shipped out in ocean going bulk carriers. Maintenance work in the calcining unit is performed by Crown's refinery maintenance department on an as needed, on call basis.

Research and development of tunneling technology is rapidly taking its rightful place as an important ingredient in the Nation's research and development strategy. The state of technology in tunneling is very important to the Federal Government. Through its support, both direct and indirect, of a wide range of public works, our government, using the taxpayer's money, is the biggest buyer of tunnels. So that this money is spent wisely and efficiently, it is important that potential developments in tunneling technology that promise lower cost tunnels be pursued, if the cost of reaching the goals is commensurate with the prospective benefits. For too many years, the Federal Government's activities in the tunneling technology field were fragmented. Recently, specific coordination efforts have been initiated. It may surprise some to realize that the total Federal expenditure on excavation technology research and development, which is largely devoted to underground excavation, is growing by leaps and bounds. In fiscal year 1971 alone, approximately $19 million were expended by Federal agencies. This current fiscal year (FY 1972) that amount will increase to $24 million. It would appear that next year we will exceed the 1972 expenditure by 52 percent to bring the total FY 1973 expenditure up to $36 million. Compressed air is a relatively inefficient yet very convenient vehicle for transmitting mechanical energy. It is inefficient when compared to, say, hydraulic or electric energy systems since compressor and pneumatic machine efficiencies are quite low (in the range 20-65%) and reticulation losses can be quite high unless adequate pipe diameters are used to minimize friction drops. It is convenient in that capital and maintenance costs of pipes and machines are exceptionally low, the equipment is flexible and lightweight, the technological level is simple, the form of the energy supply is intrinsic- ally safe, and as an additional minor but psychologically important benefit, it provides a ready source of cooling and air supply for emergency use in deep hot mines. It is for these reasons that compressed air is a premier source of energy for many forms of underground equipment, in particular hand or rig-mounted rockdrills, some forms of rock- handling equipment, and a host of minor applications including agitators, small-lift pumps and temporary f am installations. In a typical S. African deep-level gold or platinum mine, compressed air generation accounts for 15% of the total mine electrical energy bill - more than is used for hoisting. In these mines it is not uncommon for over 100 km of underground compressed air piping to be installed, primarily to supply handheld rockdrills.

The question "what constituents should be determined?" is one that defies a simple answer, because earth scientist being what you are, the rock and mineral analyst will eventually be called upon to determine about three quarters of the elements in the periodic table. The concentrations of these analyses will range from as low as 1 ppb to 100% of the material being analyzed. The most important thing to remember about a quantitative analytical result is that it can only be an estimate of the concentration of the analyte present. A measure of the reliability of that estimate is given by statistically derived statements of the precision and accuracy of the measurement. When evaluating your data an understanding of precision and accuracy are of paramount importance. Precision is the measure of agreement between replicate values while the accuracy of a determination is the concordance between it and the true value. There is no quarantee, however, that a precise answer is an accurate one. The numerical difference between the two values is the error. When evaluating your data, the repeats analyzed with your samples will identify the precision and control standards of U.S.G.S. or Canadian Certified Materials quality will identify the accuracy. The main problem is this data is routinely withheld from the report, or was it ever included in the analysis of your samples?

Modelling of industrial sulphide flotation based on data collected in several flotation plants is discussed. A mechanistic approach is used in which it is recognised that flotation is a two stage process with concentration occurring both in the pulp and in the froth. The important features of the model, which is a kinetic model, are – 1. for each particle species there is a range of flotation rates which corresponds to the range of particle sizes, 2. the flotation rates of the liberated gangue particles which have no hydrophobic properties are dependent on the flotation rate of water and are controlled by variables such as the air and frother addition rates, and the pulp level, 3. as an approximation the valuable sulphide particles may be regarded as being present in two groups with high and low flotation rate constants, 4. increase in the addition rate of collector tends to increase the proportion of sulphide particles which are in the high flotation rate constant group. The actual flotation rate of each group of particles is a combination of an "inherent" flotation rate and a flotation rate which is dependent on the flotation rate of water, at particular air and frother addition rates and pulp levels there is a physical limit to the rate at which particles can be transported into the concentrate and this is recognised in the

Lime, the versatile chemical is, generally speaking, a calcined or burned form of limestone commonly known as quicklime, calcium oxide or, when water is added, calcium hydroxide or slaked lime. Almost 40 different lime products are available, a fact which has contributed to the rather loose use of the term lime as well as to confusion and misunderstanding. The term is frequently, albeit erroneously, used to denote almost any kind of calcareous material or finely ground form of limestone or dolomite. Lime is made from high calcium or high magnesium limestone, generally having a minimum of 97% combined carbonate content. Normally, high calcium lime has less than 5% MgO. When the lime is produced from a high magnesium limestone, the product is referred to as dolomitic lime. Calcination/Hydration Calcination, or the production of lime, has its origins in the earliest days of alchemy, with the general reaction class having been identified in an Arabic text printed in 1000 AD. It was much later, however, in the mid-1700s to the mid-1800s before this basic reaction became understood from scientific perspective. The pro- duction of lime has been so basic and simple that its underlying scientific principles have over the years received only intermittent investigation. Rather, much of the thought and inquiry has been directed toward the development of kilns. Thus, it has only been in the last 25 to 30 years that lime has received any concentrated scientific investigation relative to the thermodynamics and kinetics of the calcination and hydration reactions. Particular emphasis has been focused upon energy consumption and fuel efficiency. Calcination refers to a broad class of reactions, of which the limeflimestone reaction is just one, wherein a substance is heated to less than its melting point, resulting is a weight gain or weight loss. In the calcination of limestone to produce lime, the basic chemical reaction is as follows: [ ] While there is nearly universal agreement bout the equilibrium conditions related to the limestone/lime reaction above, there have been numerous and varied calcination models developed for the reaction. Recent investigations have resulted in the development of the model shown in [Fig. 1]. From this model it can be seen that calcination is a function of both temperature and CO, pressure. It does not, however, provide any indication of the rate at which the reaction takes place. Calcination is strongly time variant with different limestones. In a very broad sense this relates to the fact that the calcination reaction starts on the exterior surface of the limestone and then proceeds toward the center. As the calcination reaction takes place, the CO2 released at the interface must make its way through the lime to the exterior surface. Since calcination is limited by gas diffusion to the surface of the partially calcined limestone, the natural impurities in the stone, differences in crystallinity, grain boundary chemistry, density variations, and imperfections in the atomic lattice all play a significant role in calcination rate. Therefore, the suitability of a given limestone as a source material for lime production can be determined only after completion of adequate burn tests designed to evaluate the various limiting factors. When a coal-fired kiln system is considered, the entire process of calcination is made even more complex by the introduction of additional chemical constituents into the calcination environment. The reader is referred to the references for a more detailed description of the complete calcination reaction and the differences inherent between differing kiln systems. In the foregoing discussion it was noted that CO2 is released during the reaction. This release results in a 44% weight loss during the complete calcination of a high calcium limestone, or a 48% weight loss for a highly dolomitic limestone. The trade term for this weight percent loss is loss on ignition, or LOI. This weight loss is frequently used as a measure of the completeness of calcination. Because the calcination reaction is chemically reversible, quicklime or burned lime is frequently referred to a being highly reactive, or unstable. The more stable form of lime, hydrated lime, is commonly preferred and generally specified by the user. Hydrated lime is obtained by adding water to quicklime to produce a dry, fine powder. Quicklime's affinity for moisture is then satisfied, although it still retains a strong affinity for CO2.

A model is presented to minimize the winning costs per shift within the different sections of a potassium mine by liner programming and to simulate the other areas to get all costs in order to comp re different production strategies. he model is based on a a given total layout of the underground mining which is considered to be fix during the planning period. Room-and-pillar mining is assumed to be used. Potassium extraction is done by drilling and blasting. Transportation of the raw material to sectional crushers is done by scoop-trams where it is crushed to coarse-grains which allow further transportation by conveyor belts to the hoisting shaft or to a bunker. When production is stopped, the continuously working factory is supplied by means of this bunker. Starting from a desired composition of the raw material the model has to keep the given total. demand of raw material per shift, to minimize the winning costs, to keep the capacity constraints of the equipment and to determine the planned output of production of the sections per shift. Costs of the areas which follow the extractions are added to extraction costs in order to allow a comparision of costs of several alternatives of production. Optimization in extraction and assignment of scoop-trams to sections is done by linear programming. The other areas of the mine are treated by simulation. The model output is a schedule of the calculated costs broken down into costs of processes, equipment, and kinds of costs. This proceeding enables to compare different ways of production.

The technology applied to shaft sinking has lagged far behind other construction activities. While surface oriented construction and mining have made great strides with new processes and equipment, the majority of shafts sunk currently still follow a drill, blast and muck-out cycle developed in the 16th century. Today, in 1979, the shaft sinking industry is in the midst of its own private industrial revolution. Millions of dollars are being spent annually by industry and government alike to spring the art of shaft sinking into the 20th century. The objective of this paper is to review a few of the newest mechanized schemes for shaft sinking. This is not a theoretical review, however, but a practical one, and deals only with hardware and projects which are currently on jobsites. Figure 1 shows the equipment. On the left is the 241SB 184, a 24 foot diameter blind shaft borer. This machine is currently at about 200 feet, constructing a coal mine shaft in Alabama. It is built and utilized in a manner similar to a tunnel borer. In the upper center is the 1211SR, a 12 foot diameter blind shaft reamer. This machine follows a 6 foot pre-drilled blind pilot hole, and is at work in Chicago. On the upper right is the 121BR, a powerful new blind drill. Just below it is the conical drill head for the 121BR which can utilize either carbide or standard disc cutters. At the center bottom is an expandable back reaming head which can be used to enlarge a drilled shaft up to a maximum of 16 feet diameter, or can be used to produce a shaft having several diameter changes. This equipment is also in use in Chicago.

Peabody's Camoy mining system is a truly continuous conceptual method of underground mining of coal. The system solves the three factors which limit coal from being mined continuously. Camoy's principal features are improved productivity and increased recovery. A conservative retreat production rate of 2 1/2 times normal continuous miner room-and-pillar mining rates are projected for a 6-7' seam. Overall mine productivity will be 2 times normal, with a potential for considerably higher rates. Major incremental production increases can be achieved by partial implementation of the system. Total mine recoveries of 75% are expected. The system includes both advance and retreat mining. The retreat half of the approach encompasses many of the features of short wall mining. A central panel is prepared for retreat mining by driving entries using room-and-pillar mining to the left and right of it. The room-and-pillar mining encompasses the advance features of Camoy. In the retreat phase, the roof of the face is supported by self advancing chocks or shields. All mining is done under the chocks by a continuous miner. As the miner advances the chocks continuously move forward behind it. Thus, as in a typical short wall system, continuous roof support is attained. Ventilation is unidirectional, another characteristic of short-wall type systems. Fresh air is brought in and passed over the working personnel. It moves to the face where the continuous miner is operating, picks up the generated dust and released methane, and is exhausted away from all personnel. Exposure to respirable dust and ignition hazards due to methane build-ups are almost totally eliminated. Thus, the second limiting factor is overcome and continuous ventilation is attained. Coal mined with the continuous miner is passed to a surge car and then to a Serpentix conveyor. The Serpentix, a Peabody invention, is a flexible conveyor capable of going around corners.

Discussion of concept Breakage of rock by machine is one of the major methods of excavation. With the development of modern engineering techniques, the advantages of using this method have become even greater. Improving efficiency and reducing the cost of rock breakage is the main goal of mechanizing the rock-breaking operation. For a given stratum, the efficiency of a machine excavation depends, to a large extent, on the design and method of application of the tools used. In a planetary cutter head, the subcutter heads move like planets around the main drive shaft. The general structure of the cutter head is shown in Fig. 1. As shown in this illustration, the main drive shaft (1-1) is connected to the tie bar (1) and, thereby, to a gear (5) that meshes with a fixed-gear ring (2). The subcutter head (4) is rigidly connected to the gear (5) by the subcutter-head axis (2-2). When the main drive shaft (1-1) rotates, the subcutter head (4) rotates around the axis (2-2), under the action of the tie bar and with the help of sleeve pipe (3). At the same time, axis (2-2) also rotates around the main shaft (1-1). As shown in Fig 1, [a] is the angle between the main shaft and the subcutter-head axis. This angle determines the shape of the drilling face. If [a] equals zero, the drilling face will be a flat surface (Fig.1 (a) ), and if [a] is greater than zero, the drilling face will be a spherical surface (Fig. I (b)). For a planetary cutter head, the most important design parameter is the transmission ratio (i), which is defined as [i = (0210)1(1)] Where [(a] is the angular speed of rotation of the subcutter heads around their individual axes, and [o] is the angular speed of rotation of the subcutter-head axes around the main shaft. In Eq. (1), i is positive if the direction of rotation of a subcutter head around its axes is the same as the direction of rotation of the subcutter-head axes around the main shaft (see Fig. 1(b)). Conversely, i is negative when the two directions are opposite (see Fig. 1(a)). When i is positive, the cutters on the subcutter heads form epicycloid paths on the drilling face, as shown in Fig. 2(a). The purpose of this section is to demonstrate the development of a method that we believe can be used for simulating and predicting mine water inflow. It will also show how important it is for personnel who model mine water inflow to have considerable experience with this subject, and with the conversion of hydrogeologic frameworks to conceptual models. Several of the models described previously are said to be three dimensional. However, closer examination reveals that there is considerable limitation in the variation possible in the third dimension. A true three-dimensional analysis would require a very large program. Therefore, it seems more reasonable to develop a procedure by which information from a two-dimensional model can be used for analysis of a three-dimensional problem. For a vertical mine shaft this is relatively easy because most two-dimensional models have an option for axisymmetric flow. If it can be assumed that axisymmetry exists about the centerline of the shaft it can be modeled easily as has been illustrated previously. For a horizontal drift or tunnel the analysis is not nearly as straightforward. However, the flow can be divided into two parts as indicated in Fig. 59. Part 1 considers the flow into the side of the drift while part 2 considers the flow into the end of the drift. To calculate the flow rate into the entire drift from the unsteady flow into a unit length the instantaneous flow per unit length may be integrated over the total length of the shaft. This procedure is shown in Fig. 60. The radial flow through any incremental length of the shaft is q. The total flow rate, Q, into the drift at any particular time is given by: The discharge q is a function of the time during which a particular segment has been draining that is dependent on the location x. In other words, a location at x = 0 has been draining during the entire time of expansion while a segment at x = L has only started to drain. Therefore, the time of draining at any point, x, is given by: [ ] where t' is the time over which the mine has been expanded. The mechanism of oxidation of sulfur in pyrite is a function of the rate and driving force for oxidation. New evidence is presented in this article to show that at moderate potentials, a sulfur-rich hydrophobic layer is formed. Under ordinary conditions, the sulfur layer is covered with a layer of iron oxides, hydroxides, sulfate or oxy-sulfide ions. Under these conditions, pyrite is hydrophilic. In the presence of iron-chelating agents or iron sequestering ions, iron layer might not form. Under these conditions, sulfur-layer is exposed and pyritic might become hydrophobic. Stronger oxidizing conditions decompose the sulfur-layer, thereby making the surface hydrophilic.

Surface mining, from ore extraction to processing, requires many types of equipment to obtain the final product. Mine equipment often includes shovels, drills and haul trucks. Ore processing equipment, including plants, mills and concentrators, are also part of surface mining operations. Surface mining operations emphasize production. Production is where the bills are paid and fortunes are made. However, there must be support to keep the equipment operational. To most production people, equipment maintenance is a necessary evil. Maintenance is not glamorous work. It is often neglected when praise is being passed around. It is easy to recognize higher production, greater capacities, faster cycle times or more loads hauled. But who cares if an engine is replaced in 12 hours instead of 48? The answer is, everyone should - from the hourly miner to the mine manager. Surface mining equipment needs constant maintenance work. It must be lubricated, components replaced, electrical problems repaired and other problems addressed. Repair work for any surface equipment takes time away from production. It costs money. Maintenance costs cannot be avoided. However, they can be minimized. Minewide communication should include operations cooperating with maintenance. Traditionally, operations resist surrendering equipment to maintenance if it can continue to produce. The rationale is, every load that can be hauled today is money in the bank. If the unit is taken down, the money is lost. This thinking is prevalent in many surface mining areas, including the mill. "Not on my shift," the operator thinks. "Let the next crew worry about it. The problem with this thinking is in probability and statistics. The longer equipment goes without maintenance work, the higher the probability of equipment failure. When the failure does occur, it is certain to cause the equipment to remain down longer than if the maintenance department had been allowed to take it down. Many mining operations have closed early in their lives because of poor maintenance practices. This has become the industry standard because substandard levels of performance are acceptable. Management believes it gets five to six hours of work from maintenance people during an eight-hour shift. Actually, the industry average is less than two hours of work per shift. Real productivity levels of less than one hour are not unusual. There are few exceptions. However, a daily work schedule (DWS) will increase productivity at many properties by 50% to 100%. A 200% improvement is not unusual. The DWS will work. Maintenance people are among the most intelligent and motivated people on the property. They deserve the chance to be productive. [ ] In preparing a DWS, management needs to understand two productivity principles - the productivity spread and the real maintenance workday.

Linear programming on desktop computers is commonly used to optimize coal blending proportions. The objective function is usually the cost of the blend. The constraints consist of materials and heat balances as expressed as linear functions of the blend. This is illustrated in Example 1. Inclusion of a sulfur compliance constraint is more complex because the maximum permitted sulfur percentage is not a pre-specified constant. Rather, it is a function of the calorific power of the blend itself. The current limit of 1.2 pounds of sulfur dioxide per million Btu may be expressed as: Sulfur Max % = 0.6 • H/10,000 with H in Btu/lb.

Quartz-limestone feed mixtures were ground in a laboratory-size, choke-fed, high- pressure roll mill. As compared to individually ground minerals, the harder component (quartz) in the product mixture is coarser, and the softer component (limestone) is finer. An energy split index is introduced for quantifying the disproportionate split of the mill energy between the feed constituents. This index is incorporated into a grinding kinetic model for simulation of the product size distributions of the mineral components as a function of energy input to the mill. The self-similar character of the size distributions is analyzed and an energy-size reduction relationship for the roll mill is highlighted.

INTRODUCTION Square-set timbering of stopes developed from stull support methods because veins too wide for stulling were being mined. In general, the void caused by the stoping of the ore is filled with a system of interlocking timbers. Timber framework supports the wall rock, the mining operations, and provides access. A timbered stoping method can be used in all widths of veins at any dip. The timbering can be normal and parallel to the planes of the walls or at angles to these planes. Irregularly shaped ore bodies can be worked by timbered methods. Pinching or swelling of the vein will not adversely affect the method. Timbered stoping is especially advanta¬geous where weak ground is encountered in the vein or the wall rock. The ground is unsupported only until timber sets are stood. These stopes can be filled with sand or waste when desirable. The customary method of developing a square-set timbered stope with haulage drifts above and below and timbered raises on each endline is shown in Fig. 1. The drifts are timbered the full stoping length. The raises have two compartments with the manway and timber slide in one compartment and the chute in the other. The drifts and the raises cannot be widely spaced as handling timbers is an important consideration. Stoping can begin immediately above the drift timber and continue in both directions and upward from the raise. Breasting down each blast round for only one timber set laterally is the common practice. The blasted ore falls to a lower floor where it is slushed or trammed to the chute. Drilling can proceed on the upper floor while broken ore is being removed from the stope. As shown in Fig. 2, square-set timbering may be used in cut-and-fill stopes to support the back and walls until fill is added. There are various ways of developing an ore block for timbered stoping. Fig. 3 depicts the situation for the main haulage in the vein with an intermediate drift separated from it by a sill pillar. The ore is slushed into the chute connecting the two drifts. The situation in Fig. 4 is identical to that in Fig. 3 except that no sill pillar is used. In Fig. 5, the haulage drift development is done in the footwall with crosscuts driven to intersect the ore body. The intermediate drift development is above the crosscuts with a minimal sill pillar. The main bottleneck in timbered stoping is in the timbering process. Drilling in the stope is generally held up while timbering is done. Two or three men are re¬quired to do the timbering and an additional one or two men are needed to transport and raise or lower the tim¬ber. Good organization is essential to timbering. Skill must be exercised in standing the timber to support the ground and still maintain good production. COSTS AND PRODUCTIVITIES Development and stoping costs are presented in Tables 1 through 7 for the situations in Figs. 3 and 5,

The dilemma of a numerical analyst not only concerns the problem of modelling the non-linear behaviour of intact rock, but also the non- linearity contributed by structural discontinuities. In this light, it is the intention of this paper to examine some aspects of the non-homogenity and structural discontinuities of rock and incorporate this behaviour into boundary element numerical solution. Non-homogeneous material is considered piecewise, thus homogeneous and is modelled by using sub-regions. The Mohr- Coulomb failure criterion is employed to model the non-linear behaviour of the major discontinuities. A computer program is developed based on the procedure for combining the direct boundary element method and the displacement discontinuity method. A linear element type is employed in the formulation of numerical solution. The computer program is used to study the stress distribution in a gold mine.

The electrokinetic and flotation behavior of the green alga Chlorella vulgaris was studied in the absence and presence of Pb(II), Al(III) and flotation collectors. It was found that the presence of Al(III) is necessary for good flotation of the organism, whether or not Pb(II) is present, when dodecylammonium chloride or sodium dodecylsulfate is used as collector. Best flotation using dodecylamine is at about pH 8, and best flotation when using sodium dodecylsulfate is at about pH 4. It appears because of the small size of the organisms that the Al(III) is necessary for flocculation to enhance bubble-cell contact and C. vulgaris removal from water. When N-dodecyl-2-aminopropionic acid is used as collector, good flotation occurs at about pH 4 without the addition of Al(III).
