Mechanization and automation of logistic equipment has become one of the main key factors in raising productivity and competitiveness especially for complex and larger mining or tunneling projects. The Lake Mead Intake Tunnel #3 shaft mucking installation is a good example to demonstrate the potential that is found in an overall optimized logistic. It starts with the planning and results in using customized installations which fulfill the specifically defined requirements for the project. Rowa developed a solution and supplied a shaft mucking system using a discontinuous double drum hoisting concept with shaft buckets, loading, and unloading devices. With this fully automated system a continuous muck flow of 437t/h can be achieved.

An innovative patented process has been developed to convert high volume wastes--fly ash from coal-fired power plants, municipal solid waste (MSW) ash from incineration, solids from waste water treatment and paper mill sludge into a high value and environmentally benign product in the form of a lightweight aggregate. Lightweight Aggregate is widely used in the building construction industry in the United States, Europe and some Asian countries. This paper will present the development of the process, the process itself and details on the first commercial scale plant. The commercial plant is owned and operated by Wisconsin Electric Power (WEPCO).

This paper covers several points of interest to mine engineers and planners involved in evaluating or conducting geostatistical coal reserve estimates. In particular, the ability to optimize borehole drilling locations and minimize drilling costs is addressed. Also discussed is the concept of confidence intervals for estimated coal characteristics obtained through geostatistical estimates and their importance in decision-making for mine planners. Finally, a discussion is presented on how geostatistics enables identification of invalid data points and actually forces strict attention to data editing and proper geologic interpretation.

In order to maximize the benefits obtained from flocculating agents when used as settling aids in high rate and conventional thickeners, it is often necessary to dilute the thickener feed prior to flocculant addition. In some cases, no flocculation at all is possible unless dilution water is used. The most common method of diluting thickener feed has been to recirculate some of the thickener overflow by means of a centrifugal pumping system. This represents a significant capital and operating cost. Supaflo Technologies of Australia has developed and patented an internal recirculation method known as Auto Dilution (or "Autodil") which is based on the principle that an hydraulic head differential exists between the inside and outside of the feedwell because of the higher S. G. of the pulp inside the feedwell, By installing non-return ports in the feedwell wall at the appropriate level, supernatant solution flows into the feedwell at a calculated rate and dilutes the feed without any need for external recirculation of overflow.

There are close to two million tons of Industrial Minerals processed and sold in North America wherein the processor/marketer has no affiliation with the source mine. The largest quantity, about 800,000 tons, is barium sulfate, which is sourced in lump ore form mainly from China and India. The Alumina Trihydrate Industry sources several hundred thousand tons from various alumina refineries. Substantial quantities of bauxite, zircon, magnesite, and fluorspar arrive in North American ports each month. There are also rapidly growing quantities of offshore talcs and calcium carbonate ores being processed in U.S. plants. These feedstocks are usually quite pure, have unique properties, and enjoy bulk rail or waterborne freight economies that allow successful competition with locally sourced raw materials. With increasing restrictions on mining activities, and the increasing need for sophisticated functional minerals, the importation of minerals will continue to grow.

A 2 1/2 inch diameter probe containing a high resolution gamma ray spectrometer was developed for downhole ore grade assays to depths of 6,000 feet. Tests have been conducted on the characteristics of this tool for in-situ determinations of uranium by means of natural gamma ray counting, and of copper, silver, gold, iron and coal quality by means of neutron-induced gamma rays. Application of the technique for improved carbon-oxygen logging in oil fields is promising. The probe contains a cryogenically cooled high purity germanium detector and a 4,000 channel spectrum analyzer. Gamma ray spectra are digitally transmitted up the cable to the truck-mounted data processing system. We found that uranium can be assayed directly in different types of formations independently of the degree of geochemical disequilibrium by counting the relatively weak 1.001 MeV gamma ray of protactinium-234m. Neutron activation work shows that in-situ determinations of copper, silver, iron and coal quality are technically feasible. In carbon-oxygen oil well logging the technique allows an accurate determination of carbon, oxygen, hydrogen, chlorine, silicon, calcium and iron, and shows promise of providing an improved oil/water differentiator.

The training program developed at Sierrita over the last twelve months has led to several significant improvements in both safety performance and productivity. Our most easily quantified results have been in truck productivity, where we have also experienced a 6% decrease in truck cycle times. We feel this is due to increased skill levels and awareness on the part of our operators due to our new training effort. The cycle time improvement has resulted in an increase in Truck productivity of 6%. Costs associated with productivity training have been $160,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1,400,000 in savings directly attributable to the increased skill levels of our technicians due to our training effort. As such, this represents a solid, high return investment at Sierrita.

Approximately forty years ago, the military services began a realistic investigation of the problems involved with the replacement of high pressure gaseous systems with liquid oxygen systems. The program was temporarily discontinued because of numerous State-of-the-Art problems. Ten years later, interest in the liquid oxygen breathing concept was revived. Initial testing of this concept was completed in 1946. The ensuing years have seen the general acceptance of many cryogenic breathing systems for airborne applications. The inherent features of weight savings (approximately 70%) and space savings (approximately 80%) make it very desirable for high performance military aircraft. A typical aircraft system consists of a storage container with appropriate integrated control valving (the liquid oxygen converter), a heat exchanger, breathing regulator, and oxygen mask. Normally the liquid converter is located in the aircraft wheel well for easy access by ground crew personnel and the breathing regulator is mounted in the cockpit where the pilot can connect his oxygen mask. An aircraft system such as this will provide the pilot with eight hours of breathing oxygen after a 24 hour standby period. Early in 1960, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration sought a means of providing a cooling system for their personnel involved in fueling the rockets used in the space program. The Cerro Vanguardia mine is an AngloGold Limited operation in southern Argentina that includes multiple open pits and a hybrid Merrill-Crowe and CIL circuit to recover gold and silver from oxide ore. Operations were commissioned at the site in 1998, which included a plant in the metallurgical circuit to recover cyanide from mill tailings. The cyanide recovery plant was initially configured to process tailings slurry and achieved greater than 90% cyanide recovery from tailings containing about 600 to 800 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). The cyanide recovery circuit was operated in this manner for approximately eight months, during which time the consumption of sulphuric acid and sodium hydroxide was relatively high, leading to high rates of scale formation in the acidification tank and stripping towers. In July 1999, several piping changes were made in the cyanide recovery system to permit its operation with clear solution, which reduced the sulphuric acid consumption and eliminated scale formation in process equipment. The cyanide recovery system currently operates with a two-stage counter-current decantation (CCD) circuit which provides clear solution for processing in the cyanide recovery plant. The cyanide recovery efficiency now averages about 90% to 92% from solution containing about 350 mg/L WAD cyanide (as CN). Recovered sodium cyanide now accounts for about two-thirds of the total cyanide added to the leaching circuit. This paper presents a description of the cyanide recovery plant and details regarding its current operating efficiency.

"INTRODUCTION A positive workplace environmental, health, and safety (EHS) culture affords organizations and corporations many benefits, including increased trust and employee morale, sustainable EHS performance improvements, and reliable productivity and profit margin growth. Unfortunately, many leaders and EHS professionals struggle daily to achieve and maintain positive workplace cultures and consistent business results. While lack of management support, corporate or employee buy-in, resources, and time are common factors that conflict with an EHS culture and safe work behaviors and processes, there are many other actions that threaten the positive attributes of an organization’s culture. Often these culture killers are not recognized, or worse yet, ignored because they are considered taboo. For example, voicing observations or questioning long-held management practices or process that were initially designed to promote EHS values, but no longer do so. Unfortunately, this could be viewed as challenging authority, not being a team player or even not valuing EHS. And for those that speak up, the potential for negative consequences can be real impediments to positive change. Having an open mind, constantly striving to identify culture killers, and putting forth the effort to eliminate them are the first steps to begin reaping the benefits of having a sound workplace culture. This paper helps readers to: • Recognize culture killers that negatively impact fostering and maintaining sustainable EHS cultures in the workplace. • Understand how to prevent, avoid, and respond to culture killers, before they wreak havoc in your organization. • Assess EHS culture strength, and implement plans to continuously improve it. The desire to draw boundaries around concepts, put things into boxes, and nail down requirements for something that is virtually impossible to solidify for any length of time is quite fascinating! These desires can pose challenges when trying to define what the perfect EHS culture should look like. The very act of trying to define our culture tends to create silos, and these silos, in turn, can become “culture killers”. The following is one of the most common culture killers. UNBALANCED ORGANIZATIONS TRIGGER CULTURE KILLERS Unbalanced organizations occur when an organization’s constantly shifting focus forces other important needs to take a back seat--until the focus changes again. This balancing act can be detrimental and lead to catastrophic results including low morale, lack of trust, employee dissatisfaction, high turnover, increased incidents, poor profit margins, loss of market share, and ultimately into organization-wide failure."

"INTRODUCTION The recent drop in iron ore prices has claimed an unwitting casualty in vanadium. Vanadium is dominantly produced as a co-product of steel production. The recent shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs steel-vanadium operations in South Africa has cut-off 10% of the world’s vanadium output. Earlier in February, 2015, Australia’s Atlantic Ltd. suspended operations at its Windimurra iron-vanadium complex after a fire caused severe damage at the plant. Since then, challenging market conditions has resulted in the permanent closure of this operation. This decoupling of vanadium production from integrated iron ore producers presents an opportunity for vanadium exploration companies to target single-product deposits. This trend is manifested in the increasing number of pure-play vanadium ventures around the world.The mine production of vanadium is dominated by three countries namely, China, South Africa and Russia, which collectively produce 98% of the world’s vanadium. While the use of vanadium as an alloy in the steel industry remains by far the largest application for this metal, growth in demand is expected to come from the renewable energy industry in the form of batteries for energy storage. This paper summarizes the current state of vanadium exploration, briefly describes the vanadium market and lists sources of future demand for the metal. TREND IN VANADIUM EXPLORATION The most active participants in the current vanadium exploration are pure-play vanadium ventures in Brazil, South Africa and Australia. These ventures are targeting deposits with higher vanadium grade than those typically mined in titaniferous magnetite operated by integrated steel-vanadium producers. The 10% shortfall in vanadium production resulting from the shutdown at EVRAZ’s Mapochs is expected to be partially compensated by Largo Resources’ Maracás Menchen vanadium operation located in the State of Bahia in Brazil, which commenced operation in August 2014 and is expected to reach design capacity of 11,400 tonnes of vanadium pentaoxide (V2O5) by the end of 2015. The estimated production1 for 2015 is 6,500 tonnes of V2O5 at a target production cost of $3.60/lb. This is the first vanadium operation to be placed in production in the Western Hemisphere in over 35 years."

As mines continue to deepen and become more expansive, active monitoring of larger volumes of rock mass will become more critical to calibrate numerical simulations and to ensure the safety of underground workers. Monitoring larger volumes of rock mass requires low-cost sensors that are simple in construction and installation. In this study, a novel hybrid optical fiber cable (HOFC) designed for use in distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) via grouted boreholes was deployed to monitor a bulk mining operation in an underground metal mine. The HOFC was successfully used to monitor approximately 2.7 × 10 m3 of rock mass above excavations surrounding a pillar removal area in which six large pillars were removed simultaneously. A total of six measurement boreholes (maximum depth of 22 m) were used to measure strain along the optical fiber during the pillar removal operation using the HOFC, allowing for 70 individual strain measurement points, which were constructed for under one U.S. dollar each. Monitoring of the excavation area took place over a 44-day period after pillar removal. Extensional strains were noted in the areas closest to the removed pillars, while areas of compression were noted directly above the remaining pillar in the area. The results of the case study demonstrate that a low-cost optical fiber strain sensing network can be rapidly installed in a large excavation area and can provide highly sensitive strain measurements in a manner that would be cost prohibitive using other methods.

In 1966 Central Ohio Coal Company and Bucyrus-Erie signed a contract authorizing Bucyrus-Erie Company to design and build a 220 cubic yard dragline. This dragline would be used for stripping overburden from their coal reserves located near Cumberland, Ohio. The size of the machine was arrived at after a thorough application study of their annual coal output requirement, depth of overburden and type of terrain. The design and construction of this machine which has been designated by BECO as model number 4250-W is the title of this paper. Size wise based on machine weight the 4250-W represents an increase factor of three over our largest current dragline. Probably the easiest way of presenting a machine of this size is to build it from the bottom up.

This paper deals with the search for the best practical means of storing sulphide bearing tailings, where there is no residual excess of carbonate material. It is the common experience that the sulphide content decomposes, with the aid of bacterial action, and the resulting sulphuric acid escapes, along with any heavy metal solutes, through embankments that are usually porous to some degree. The problem is typified in the tailings of the uranium operations of Elliot Lake, Ontario, where mining started some 20 years ago. The approach to tailings disposal paralleled the practice for other hydrometallurgical plants treating gold and base metal ores. Impoundment areas were designed to retain solids, and a clear and neutral overflow was considered satisfactory practice. Now experience has shown that these areas, some idle for over a dozen years, release acids, in seepage and overflows, to an unacceptable degree. To protect natural water courses neutralizing plants are operated wherever required. Lime slurry is fed continuously into the tailings outflows in a quantity sufficient to raise the pH to 8.5 and precipitate heavy metals that may be in solution. The objection to this procedure is that the plants will require servicing indefinitely, unless a better remedy is found.

Let me open my remarks this morning by stating how we as legislators and as natives of the western coal-producing states feel about our role in becoming one of the major producers of coal-related energy and chemical products is similar to the groom at his shotgun wedding. We are apprehensive, to say the least, as to the ultimate outcome. We do not have complete freedom of choice. It will certainly change our quality of life. We are concerned about the increase in population, but are realistic enough to recognize that we are forced to go through with the marriage. Other alternatives could be worse than the bride. Also, we were aware that this could occur, but we did not plan on it being this sudden. Or, put another way, we have two groups advising us that our choices are cattle or coal, food or fuel, pollution and people or pure air, wheat or gas, clean water or prosperity, noise or solitude.

The physical relief is a variable of utmost significance in the course of the analysis, evaluation, design and management of the visual environment. In this sense, there are cases where it would be desirable to isolate the relief from the other elements making up the visual environment and to investigate its visual value separately. Such cases include the technical works that cause major and permanent alterations to the relief, as well as the works, of which the spatial arrangement depends on the morphology of the ground. Slopes, distances, hypsometric difference values, viewsheds are elements of the relief that affect the visual value of a landscape, but also the ability of a particular landscape to accept and absorb new activities. This paper describes an evaluation and prediction model of the visual value of the landforms. A questionnaire survey takes place in order to investigate the public preference, using a sample of 221 persons in the broader area of Athens. The means used to demonstrate the various forms of reliefs are 32 perspective digital relief images. Following this and in order to investigate the elements of the relief that affect its visual value, 20 quantitative indices were developed and examined so as to select the best ones. Linear prediction models of the visual value were investigated from the previous elements, through a regression process. The applications of the proposed model in physical environment planning are many, such as the prediction of visual impact by arranging works that alter the relief of a region, as it happens in mining, metallurgical and waste disposal sites.

DOUG HALBE: I've decided that we're going to change tactics here and we're going to be nice to people from now on. [Co-chair makes gesture of intense disbelief; laughter] I've also decided who's not going to be a co-chair next year. [laughter] We thought we'd get a couple of experts for our next presentation: some people with a lot of experience. We've asked them to tell us some of the things that all of you operators out there might be able to apply immediately to your plant. Our next two speakers have a tremendous amount of experience, and I think you'll find what they're going to say is highly pertinent to most plants. I looked through their paper and found some things that I could have used in the plants I operated in the past. Our first speaker is Terry McNulty. A lot of you know Terry. He was with Anaconda for a number of years as director of research. He then was president of Hazen Research. I'm going to continue with our new custom of saying nice things. Terry is the guy that I call when I don't know something, and he's always got the answer. SPEAKER: Who do you work for, Doug? [laughter] DOUG HALBE: Remember that we're being nice to people here, Joe. I know that's a stretch. [laughter] TERRY McNULTY: Thank you, Doug. I'm a little bit mystified by this sudden switch of tactics just before I get to the podium. Doug's been a good friend for a lot of years so I guess I do have to be nice. I won't say anything deprecatory about him, but I would have to comment that the observations made by earlier speakers have been far too generous. [laughter] During nine years of consulting as a mineral processor and extractive metallurgist, I have often conducted audits of the performance of client's plants. Usually these audits have been ordered by the plant management in hopes of identifying opportunities for improving processing efficiency or reducing costs. In an age where customer service and quality drive today's industry and business, no service or product is exempt from these demands. Industry and business are streamlining everything from people to equipment and today have a heavier reliance on the performance and quality of their assets and equipment, (one of the keys to staying competitive). In the mining process industry, the centrifugal slurry pump is a key piece of equipment that keeps product moving and aids in generating revenue for its owner. The continued improvement and customer success lies in a team effort between the mining industry and the pump manufacturers. We, the pump manufacturers, need to keep improving our designs to further extend the life of our pump with fewer failures and promote to our customers proper maintenance of the pumps to continually keep unexpected failures to a minimum. Strict equipment maintenance, as thoroughly demonstrated by the military, is key to the long life and success of any piece of equipment. In the often harsh duty of the centrifugal slurry pump, maintenance is something that requires "attention to detail". No area of the pump is exempt from attentive maintenance. Here, discussions will focus on the areas of the mechanical drive end, wet end, seals, and extended pump shut down and start up. There has not been a slurry pump designed to maintain or repair itself. So in effect, each pump warrants able bodied maintenance persons to maintain them who continually observe all the rules of safety. Prior to any maintenance discussion or action, the issue of safety should always be addressed. Here, as with everywhere, the same rules apply. Work at a safe pace, note all safety precautions, use associated safety equipment and personal protective attire, observe all tagout and lockout procedures, and most importantly, be aware.

The Montana Tunnels diatreme is a low-grade polymetallic ore body containing economically mineable quantities of gold, silver, lead, and zinc. Widely varying gold grades combined with the general erratic nature of the mineralization create a complex sampling, assaying, and ore control problem. In order to maximize productivity and profitability, a variety of procedures have been used. These include differing sample size, frequency and method. In addition, assay techniques have been adjusted and refined to fit specific requirements, the result of which is an accurate, functional sampling and ore control system.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is in the early stages of developing a national mining waste program. Our goal is to develop a mining waste program that will be state implemented, multimedia in nature, flexible, utilize and enhance existing state programs, and protect the environment. The Agency appreciates the cooperation the mining industry is providing through its participation in the Policy Dialogue committee on Mining and by providing the Agency with technical data. The following is a discussion of what led to the development of a national mining waste program, the agenda initiative to evaluate Toxic Substances Control Act authority in phosphate manufacturing, and the important steps being taken through the Policy Dialogue process to frame and discuss issues. EXTRACTION AND BENEFICIATION OF ORES The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act of 1976 (RCRA) and subsequent amendments created a framework for the regulation of hazardous wastes under Subtitle C and nonhazardous waste under Subtitle D. In 1978, initial regulations were proposed for hazardous waste management units under RCRA. These identified a universe of special wastes that were large volume, low hazard and less amenable to Subtitle C control techniques. EPA noted that waste materials from the "extraction, beneficiation and processing of ores and minerals m fit these criteria. In October 1980, Section 3001 of RCRA was amended. This Bevill amendment excluded solid waste from the extraction, beneficiation and processing of ores and minerals from regulatory control under RCRA's hazardous waste Subtitle C. This was done pending a report to Congress and a regulatory determination regarding the Subtitle C status of these wastes. Thus in November 1980, EPA published an interim final amendment to the RCRA Subtitle C regulations to reflect the Bevill amendment. RCRA requires EPA to perform studies and make reports to Congress regarding the management methods and potential hazards of managing waste. RCRA also calls for a regulatory determination regarding whether Subtitle C (hazardous) or D (non- hazardous) controls are warranted for these wastes. In December 1985, EPA submitted a report to congress entitled, “Wastes from the Extraction and Beneficiation of Metallic Ores, Phosphate Rock, Asbestos, Overburden from Uranium Mining and Oil Shale." In that report, EPA found that some mining wastes exhibit hazardous characteristics, that the range of risk from mining waste is broad, and that waste management practices have caused environmental damage. In July 1986, EPA published a regulatory determination based on information gathered in the 1985 report to Congress and comments from interested parties.
