Hanford Reservation, in the State of Washington, with its deep basalt formations, is one of the three sites recommended by the Department of Energy for detailed investigations in order to select the first nuclear waste repository in the United States. Information obtained from several deep bore-holes drilled at Hanford indicates that the underground facility can be developed in one of the major basalt flows belonging to the Grande Ronde Formation in the Columbia Plateau, at depths greater than 3200 ft. One of the main concerns in the underground repository design is the achievement of acceptable environmental conditions during the development and the operation of the repository. For this, ventilation and air-conditioning are of prime importance and should be fully addressed. Besides the factors that determine the airflow requirements to meet the personnel and equipment operation needs, there are two major concerns that impact on the ventilation system design: the temperature of the in situ virgin basalt rock and the influx of groundwater. These two factors are related by the fact that the groundwater has the same temperature as the rock itself and they both constitute main sources of heat underground. Current information indicates that the temperature of the virgin rock at a depth of around 990 m (3250 ft) is 52°C (12S°F). However, there are some indications that the rock temperature at the selected horizon might be higher. This paper addresses the impact of the virgin rock temperature on the ventilation system and air-cooling requirements. Graphs with heat loads and cooling required for different rock temperatures have been prepared for a given model and network, using computer techniques for simulating the climatic parameters.

"For his pioneering contributions to the understanding of the geology of porphyry copper systems" Recipient Of The 1997 D. C. Jackling Award SPENCER R. TITLEY Introduction The subject of this lecture, a late century perspective on porphyry copper geology, is one of current interest and importance as the search for these ores remains intense. It is presented in the belief that an appreciation of our present understanding of the subject requires it to be viewed historically, thus providing a basis for evaluating appropriate directions for continued study. At the outset, it is important to note that the technology of mining and extractive metallurgy has developed ore from these low grade orebodies, starting with D. C. Jackling, and has continued to create them as copper grade and price have diminished. But the continued search for them is a geological problem that responds to growing expectations of people and societies; exploration based upon ever increasing knowledge of the habits of the ores has been very successful. This is the story of evolution of geological thought and practice in porphyry ore search across an interval of time beginning with the bulk mining of "low grade" copper ores at Bingham and ending with late Century concepts. "How did we get here?" The lecture concerns the ideas of many different people. The ideas and events discussed reflect a bias on North American thought, where the great low grade orebodies were first recognized as such and where many of the basic geological ideas were developed. A very great number of geologists have contributed to this understanding. In no sense is it meant to minimize the contributions to the story that have evolved in the study and mining of ores of the Andes, whose development and expansion has been nearly synchronous with that in North America - nor to minimized comparable contributions made in the late century from studies of the newer discoveries of deposits in other regions, especially the southwestern Pacific regions. In expansion of this topic, I have found that many important concepts are marked by appropriate publication but some are not, or I have not been able to discover documentation. Many notions appear to have become conventional knowledge without publication, mostly being geological viewpoints developed synchronously from similar observation. Thus, apologies are extended in advance to those whose work I have might have missed and to those unknown to me whose unpublished ideas may have seeped into the pool of common knowledge without appropriate recognition. The analysis here addresses events of two time segments, an older one extending from the developments at Bingham in the early 1900s through the Second World War, ending about 1950: the second period extends from that time to the present. This separation is seen in Figure 1, which traces numbers of publications through the period as extracted from some 700 publications, again with a North American bias, from an annotated bibliography of porphyry copper geology in preparation. During the early period, exploration was "immature" in North America, that is, geologists looked for new districts and sites of the deposits. Outcrops were sought that carried the signatures of former mineralization and regional controls related to structural geology were closely studied. In the later period, North American exploration had "matured" into a study of districts, rather than a search for them. As the studies of these ores intensified during the younger period concommitant with increasing demands for the metal, they did so with a broadened understanding of some habits of occurrence, of hydrothermal alteration, mineral zoning, petrology, and geochemical and geophysical signatures. Introduction Backfilling of mine voids is used to prevent or control the effects of subsidence on surface structures. The pumped-slurry, blind backfilling process has been successful for stabilizing ground over abandoned and inaccessible underground coal mines. This article describes the systematic evaluation of potential monitoring systems that would improve backfill monitoring technology. It also details field proof-of-concept tests that were conducted on two systems and the difficulties encountered in implementing them. Ground subsidence over abandoned mines can have devastating effects on overlying urban areas decades after the closing of room-and-pillar mines. The result may be cracked foundations, ruptured gas and water lines, broken sewers, distortion or cracking in superstructures, and sinks and potholes in the ground surface. About 32,000 km2 (8 million acres) of land in the US has been undermined for coal. According to the US General Accounting Office, 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) have undergone subsidence and another 8,100 km2 (2 million acres) are expected to subside by the year 2000. Actual figures on land affected or threatened by subsidence are probably much higher, since these estimates were based on late 1960s studies. For more than two decades, the US Bureau of Mines has been engaged in stabilizing ground in urban areas having high risk potential for subsidence costing millions of dollars. Thousands of acres have been stabilized, protecting property worth hundreds of millions of dollars. In earlier years, backfilling was by in-mine stowing in accessible mines or by gravity-feed sluicing methods in inaccessible mines. Pumped-slurry methods have been used extensively in the past 10 years. More slurry can be injected for fill from fewer injection holes over extensive areas in abandoned mines. Since this method requires fewer boreholes, there is less disruption of surface facilities. An investigation was conducted to determine the feasibility of using advanced, remote sensing or monitoring technology for application in monitoring fill placement. Specifically, the objective was to develop conceptual systems for blind backfill monitoring that require fewer boreholes and give better definition than is now possible. Blind Backfilling Methods Blind backfilling operations are conducted from the surface and do not require personnel and equipment underground. These methods are applicable to abandoned, inaccessible workings. Two categories of blind back-filling are point support, practiced by civil engineers to protect individual structures or surface facilities, and areal backfilling methods, used to protect large areas against subsidence. Point Support Methods Point support methods are usually gravity-feed systems. In general, point support methods use small volumes of expensive fill material and require a large number of boreholes within a constructed site. Because of the processed material used for back-filling and the close spacing of the injection boreholes, control and monitoring often may be accomplished by borehole cameras. Areal Backfilling Areal backfilling is conducted mainly by the pumped-slurry injection process (Fig. 1). In eastern and interior coalfields, material used is often mine refuse or flyash, both being undesirable on the surface and costly to dispose of in an environmentally acceptable manner. Gold Fields Mining Corporation started processing ore from it's Chimney Creek operation in northern Nevada in November, 1987. Since that time production has averaged about 200,000 ounces per year from the milling and dump leaching circuits combined. The events that led up to commissioning of the plant started in January of 1985 when the Gold Fields exploration team drilled their first hole in an area now known as Discovery Hill. The major orebody was located later in the year in what is currently the major focus of activity, the North Pit. Subsequent drilling since plant startup has found another 14 million tons of ore two miles south of the original orebody. This South Pit orebody is currently being stripped and metallurgical testing is underway. Engineering Engineering on the Chimney Creek plant started in earnest in May, 1986. Davy McKee Corporation from San Ramon, California, did both the engineering and the construction management. Before engineering began the entire senior staff of the Plant Department was hired and assigned to the project. Senior staff included the Plant Superintendent, Plant General Foreman, Maintenance General Foreman and Chief Metallurgist. Gold Fields does not employ an internal central engineering staff to design their plants. We feel that the people who design the plant should be the ones who will be required to run it once it has been commissioned. This philosophy affords a continuous accountability from start of design through commissioning and operations. All four of the senior staff spent the most critical phase of the engineering stage at Davy McKee, so the plant is truly a reflection of all four disciplines. In bringing on the Maintenance General Foreman from the start, there was a focus placed on ease of maintaining the plant. Another philosophy that was adopted from the start was that the plant be easy to work in and maintain for both operators and maintenance personnel. Numerous design criteria were given to Davy McKee to ensure this. For example, we required that every piece of equipment could be reached easily with a crane or fork lift. All conveyors were required to have walkways on both sides for ease of maintenance and a minimum of 30 inches of clearance under them for ease of cleanup. Visibility for operators was considered very important and the control rooms and general plant layout were designed with this in mind. A list of about 100 general rules were given to Davy McKee during the early layout meetings and these were held as the general design criteria throughout engineering and construction. While engineering was progressing in San Ramon, California, dump leach test work was being done at the site. Three 6 foot diameter fiberglass columns were constructed and filled to a 20 foot height with low grade ore. Leaching characteristics were determined and the dump leach design was based on information collected from these columns. Construction The major contractors on the project were The Industrial Company for the bulk of the piping and structural, EMKO on the electrical/ instrumentation and Hunewill for most of the earth work and leach pad construction. All plant operating and maintenance personnel were employed eight weeks before startup for intensive training. Instructors were Gold Fields personnel, including foremen, and Davy McKee engineers. On occasion, selected suppliers representatives were brought in to discuss major pieces of equipment. Project completion was targeted for January, 1988 at a projected cost of 78.9 million dollars. Actual startup was about 1 1/2 months ahead of schedule and slightly under budget. Full design capacity was achieved the first full month of operation. Crushing Run of mine ore is delivered to the crusher and dumped into a 90 ton hopper which is topped with a 30" X 30" opening stationary grizzly. In April, the US Synthetic Fuels Corp. broke a three-year silence and made its first financial award by approving a $820,750 loan for the First Colony peat-to-methanol project in North Carolina (ME, May, page 403). Peat Methanol Associates (PMA), a partnership between Koppers Co., ETCO Methanol Inc., Transco, Peat Methanol Co., and l. B. Sunderland, broke ground at First Colony last year and plans to begin production in Dec. 1985. Although the award is only a small part of Synthetic Fuels Corp.'s $15-billion budget, it does signal the corporation's intention to move aggressively ahead. It also is a positive indication that First Colony will be completed and operated successfully. This article describes the methods and equipment that will be used to harvest peat at First Colony, as well as how the peat will be converted to methanol. Introduction Peat deposits found along North Carolina's coastal plain contain high-quality fuel-grade peat with an average heating value of more than 23.3 MJ/kg (10,000 Btu/lb) (dry), with a low sulfur and ash content. The deposits differ from other US peats in that they contain large, sound Atlantic White Cedar and Cypress logs, stumps, and roots that may extend throughout the full depth of the deposit. A second difference is that these deposits are much more highly decomposed and, in the raw state, have the appearance and feel of a heavy, reddish-brown grease. These factors make it impractical to use standard production equipment so a new line was developed. Also, because of these conditions, techniques were modified to facilitate production. First Colony Farms, located near Creswell, NC, developed and evaluated a milled peat program. Equipment for this production method was designed and built, production rates were established from field operations, drying rates were established, weather data were analyzed, and total operating and capital costs were estimated. The method depends on the sun and wind for drying peat to the desired moisture content, in this case around 40%. Therefore, field preparation is actually the construction of a large solar collector to dry the peat so it can be harvested and stockpiled. It is essential that this collector be properly profiled initially and maintained during production to prevent precipitation from ponding. Initial Field Preparation Initial field preparation includes cleaning existing canals and constructing ditches and water control structures for proper drainage of rainwater run-off, building adequate roads for site access, removing surface vegetation, and profiling and sloping the fields. At First Colony, the 60.7-km2 (15,000-acre) harvesting area was divided into 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) blocks about 1.6 km (1 mile) long and 805 m (0.5 mile) wide. This was accomplished by cleaning main outfall canals with adjacent roads built from canal spoil at 1.6-km (1-mile) intervals. Existing intermediate canals that feed into main outfall canals at 805-m (0.5-mile) intervals also are cleaned. Headland roads are constructed from canal spoil along each side of each intermediate canal. This 129.5-hm2 (320-acre) block is then divided into 32 harvest strips by small V-ditches constructed at 50-m (165-ft) intervals. At the end of the field with the lowest elevation, corrugated steel pipe culverts are installed under the headland road in each V-ditch to control rainwater runoff into intermediate canals. Runoff water from the fields is diverted to a holding pond to prevent any increase in peak water runoff rates and to allow for more uniform drainage rate than experienced to date. After the drainage system is installed, harvest strips are ready for grinding and sloping operations. Surface vegetation, made up of small, waxy-leafed shrubs such as Gallberry, Bayberry, Magnolia, and scattered pond pine, can be effectively ground and incorporated into the upper surface of the peat layer. Here, it will rapidly decompose and have little effect on overall peat quality, thus eliminating the standard practice of pushing the vegetation and upper wood layer into long windrows with bulldozers and hauling this debris from the fields. Incorporating vegetation into the upper surface is known as the initial 102-mm (4-in.) surface vegetation grind and is accomplished by using a modified Bros Rota Mixer. Following this operation, and by using the same unit, a sec¬ond grind with a depth of 200-255 mm (8-10 in.) is made. This reduces the debris to a finer consistency, mixes it with the upper peat layer, and grinds any wood found in the upper 200-255 mm (8-10 in.). A number of infrastructure projects are on progress all around Greece at the moment. The common propose of these a project is the promotion of quality in: Design, construction and maintenance stages. They also comply with environmental management, which is, a method of organizing and implementing environmental protection measures. The paper includes by special reference on two important modern transport infrastructure projects for the development of Greece and its communication with Europe and the Balkans. Their landscape types and natural vegetation, local climate, geological conditions, altitudes, aspects and soil types vary As a result, upland landscapes in particular, are endangered. Due to the complex of nature of this environment, the development and the landscape design of the projects is a high challenging task. Wherever the nature of the projects requires intervention to the environment, they intend to follow the direct restoration of landscape and method for ecological balance. The implementation of landscape design of infrastructure projects, aims at restoring the landscape affected by construction works, incorporating transport works into the landscape, emphasizing on areas of particular interest (e.g. archaeological sites), while at the same time observing the principles of an efficient operation and safe use of the alignment. Landscape design provides, among others for the protection of slopes against surface erosion and the reinforcement of their stability, the improvement of road functionality, the aesthetic improvement of the landscape, adaptation of the road landscape to the greater environment, visual guidance of the user, screening of lights of the vehicles moving in the opposite direction, the protection against wind etc. The landscape design strategy and landscape applications are specified by special landscape guidelines and specifications that can be considered as part of the sustainable development of a alignment creating a high a esthetic scenery, ensuring the security of transportation and the environmental protection.

Dartbrook Coal is currently developing a modern, high production (3.5 Mtpy) single longwall retreat coal mine in the Upper Hunter Valley of NSW, Australia. The location is a green field site, with no surface or underground mining operations ever having taken place in the initial target seams. The coal seams of the working section, floor and immediate roof average a total 20 m in thickness and contain a mixed carbon dioxide 1 methane seam gas ranging from 6.5 to 11.0 m3/t. The target seams have undergone detailed characterisation to assess hazards and quantify the controls required to minimise associated risks during mining. Risks identified during initial phases of exploration and 14 months of development include: • High gas emission during development. • Probable high longwall gas emission rate. • Medium to high propensity to spontaneous combustion • Possible carbon dioxide outbursts on geological structures • The main controls currently in place include, • Mine geometry and ventilation circuits • Exploratory drilling ahead of development • Intensive in seam pre drainage • Goaf drainage plants • Comprehensive monitoring systems • Underground environmental management plan. • Pre mining predictions of gas emission provided an indication of gas emission rates which have proven to be an under estimate. Current mine issues are; • Both surface fans are at full capacity (250 m3/s 1.4 kPa) • Both gas drainage pumps are at full capacity (2.3 m3/s) • Alternatives to extensive in seam pre drainage being investigated (surface to in seam hydro fracture) Review of mine design underway This paper describes the seam characterisation, assessment of mining hazards and summary of the management plan developed to address the risks identified. During the next 15 years, US coal production is expected to double, with the increased production evenly divided between the East and the West. Along with greater production, coal export markets should increase dramatically from East, West, and Gulf Coast ports. The annual overseas export capacity of US coal-loading terminals is expected to rise from 147.1 Mt (162.1 million st) in 1981 to a minimum of 278.1 Mt (306.6 million st) in 1985, according to the US Maritime Administration. Increased coal production and use will lead to more development of import and export terminals, a vital link in the coal transportation chain. With continually escalating capital costs and the competitive markets that the terminals will serve, a well designed and efficient terminal is necessary. This article begins a two-part series that presents concepts presently used in coal export terminal design. Part I looks at site selection factors and equipment needs, while Part II will examine environmental considerations in building a terminal as well as typical capital and operating costs. The world is nearing the end of the oil era. In a few years oil will not be available to sustain the growth rate and increasing standard of living we have known in our lifetime. The big question is what energy era are we moving into? With the decline of readily available oil reserves and rapidly increasing prices, many countries are trying to switch to alternate energy forms. While intensive efforts to find new oil reserves continue, alternate energy sources such as natural gas, coal, synthetic fuels, nuclear, hydroelectric, solar, and wind power are being developed. Recent indications are that coal is expected to bridge the energy gap over the next 25-30 years until the technology and economics of the alternate energy forms reach satisfactory levels. Use of coal for energy is receiving strong attention due to its long-term availability (200-300 years minimum), relative ease of development, and its low cost per unit of power produced. By the year 2000, it is expected that 25% of world energy supply will be met by direct coal combustion and possibly another 5-10% by synthetic fuel from coal. Coal's expanding share in the world energy market, along with an increase in coking coal requirements, will result in a large increase in the world's seaborne coal trade. Recent statistics and projections for the future are shown in Table 1. This phenomenal development rate includes increases in both coking and thermal coal requirements. Because of the rapid increase of seaborne coal trade during the last 10 years and the even greater projected increase of trade to 2000, various sectors of the coal industry are faced with enormous technical challenges and huge investments in equipment, land, transportation systems, and port facilities. Very large bulk terminals are under development throughout the world. Latest surveys indicate that there are about 30 new coal export and import terminals under consideration and at least 30 existing terminals have expansion programs planned or underway. With the high cost of borrowed capital and rapid inflation rates there is great emphasis on new planning and design techniques to minimize capital and operating costs of coal transportation systems. Terminals A total coal supply system can be considered to consist of one or more mines; a train, barge, truck, or other haulage system; an export terminal; a fleet of bulk carriers; a receiving terminal; and possibly, local inland distribution networks that include barges and railways. Terminals, though only a small link in the total transportation system, play a key role in overall system efficiency. At ports or inland distribution centers, terminals act as transportation links bringing trains, ships, barges, or trucks together for cargo transfer and temporary storage. A well-designed terminal can provide maximum independence between two modes of transportation and optimum freedom for intermodal interference. A terminal acts as a buffer between the two transportation modes by providing sufficient storage capacity so a ship need not wait for its cargo on, for example, a train-by-train basis, but can load immediately from the ready stock. Similarly, a train need not wait for a ship to unload its contents but can dump immediately into storage. A terminal also can be used to properly mix various types of coal to satisfy a buyer's requirements. Consider the relative value of various production and transport segments for a typical steam coal

Inco Limited operates 11 underground mines in the Sudbury District. The mines are located on the rim of the Sudbury Basin, an oval with the axis in the range of 27 and 60 km. The ore dips to at least 3000 m below surface. The ores are mined primarily for nickel and copper. Total ore production from underground is in excess of 55,000 tons per day. Over 40 surface fans have been installed since the late 1960's. All of the fans are adjustable pitch, axial flow units. A major factor influencing ventilation design in the last 30 years has been the introduction of diesel equipment underground. Volumes per fan have ranged from 60 to 330 (cubic metres per second), with motors from 100 to 2500 hp. Fans of the axial flow type have been in common use for main fan installations at Canadian mines for many years. The standard arrangement has been to mount these fans horizontally, i.e. with the fan shaft and the long axis of the housing horizontal. This is a natural arrangement for an underground fan, but for a surface installation, a vertically mounted fan has definite advantages. The surface area taken up by a typical vertical fan installation is generally about one quarter of that with a horizontal fan of the same capacity. (1) This is not a problem with isolated fans and flat surface outcrop sites, but where the installation is to be near existing buildings, or where there are poor surface soil conditions, space and cost considerations greatly favour vertical fans. MAIN FANS INSTALLED There are 43 main surface fans in operation at 11 mines. Twenty-seven of these fans are supply units, and 75% of them are vertical installation. The remaining 16 units are main surface exhaust fans, with predominantly horizontal installation. Within the last five years, some 20 main booster fans have been installed underground at several mines. Axial flow fans, with adjustable pitch blades, are used for both surface and underground installations. Exhaust fans are equipped with stainless steel or cast aluminum blades. Main underground fans are arranged horizontally and the majority of them have a floating shaft between the fan shaft and the motor. (2) The size of the fans in service varies from 1.8 m to 5 m in diameter, with the majority ranging from 1.8 to 2.5 m. The pressure produced by these fans varies from 0.25 kPa to 2.0 kPa. At Inco Limited, two main fans in parallel are preferred, rather than a single fan, so that if one fan fails, the remaining fan can still supply up to 70% of normal air quantities, while the damaged fan is repaired. This requires closure doors on each of the fans so the fan can be isolated in case of failure. It is more expensive than a single fan, but results in less production interruptions. The fan installations are well away from sharp inlet and outlet bends. FAN DESIGN INTEGRITY Both the mine operator and the fan manufacturer must understand that the main fan is critical to the mine operation, and that everything technically possible must be done in design and manufacture to ensure the highest degree of reliability. Some of the design parameters and criteria, based on Inco experience, are outlined and discussed below. RESONANT FREQUENCIES AND HOUSING MODEL ANALYSIS Any fan assembly will have many different resonant frequencies. It is a challenge to the designer to arrive at a design in which forcing frequencies do not coincide with any of these resonant frequencies to produce unacceptable vibration levels in operation. Finite element analysis is a useful tool that can be used to identify the most critical of these, so that housing and blade stiffness can be adjusted to change any resonances that might be close to forcing frequencies. Shaft critical speeds should be at least 25% above the fan operating speed, and there should be sufficient separation between other resonant and forcing frequencies to avoid excitation that might result in high vibration levels. QUALITY ASSURANCE Radiographic Blade Examination Mine fan blades are normally cast in small lots. To ensure that the castings are sound, a full radiographic examination is recommended in the highly stressed lower 1/3 of the blade.

INTRODUCTION Every day mine management and mining personnel face the threat of a possible mine disaster or fire. Their ability to deal with such a situation safely and effectively depends on the level of emergency preparation developed and maintained. After conducting numerous informal evaluations or audits at different mine sites throughout West Virginia (as well as other states), the authors concluded that many mining operations are not prepared to handle a fire situation. The results of the audits indicate that while most mines are in compliance with federal and state legal regulations regarding levels of emergency equipment, water systems and training sessions, these levels - particularly in the area of fire training - are probably not sufficient to enable the mine employees to effectively combat a fire in its early stage. This paper will present the authors' recommendations for designing and maintaining an efficient mine emergency preparedness Program and an overview of the curriculum of the mine fire training Program currently being conducted. MINE EMERGENCY FXEPAREDNESS PROGRAM The Mine Emergency Preparedness Pro- gram (MEPP) is a management tool developed by the Mining Extension Service at West Virginia University and was designed to assist company personnel in effectively managing a mine emergency operation. The program goes beyond the traditional and required training of mine rescue teams by offering a complete emergency operations package. Included in MEPP are suggested approaches for training and organizing all personnel, ideas for developing plans of action concerning transportation, security and communications. The MEPP program may also be used as to assess present readiness levels. While the MEPP program is designed to address all types of emergency operations, the authors are convinced that emergencies involving mine fires are the ones of greatest concern and so are concentrating their efforts in that direction. Incidents where fires are involved seem to be increasing in frequency and are extremely costly to control if allowed to go beyond the incipient stages. With a proper emergency preparedness program in place and properly trained and equipped fire brigades, the authors feel that it is possible

Introduction The Carlin Trend is North America's premier gold producing district. It is located in northeastern Nevada's Elko and Eureka Counties along a northwest trending belt about 65 km (40 miles) long and 8 km (5 miles) wide (Thorstad, 1989; Jones, 1989). This trend is the worldwide reference site for epithermal, sedimentary rock-hosted microscopic gold deposits. At least 19 deposits have been discovered to date, varying in size from 933 kg to 1.08 kt (30,000 to 35 million contained oz) of gold (Fig. 1). Newmont Gold Co. and its parent, Newmont Mining Corp., jointly constitute the largest mineral right holders in the district. They own or control more than 1000 km' (386 sq miles) in and around the Carlin Trend and own all or part of I6out of the 19 mines and prospects identified to date. Since the initiation of Newmont's exploration activities in the Carlin Trend in 1961, 2.24 kt (72 million oz) of cumulative gold resources have been identified. Cumulative production from all mines since the start-up of Newmont's Carlin mine in 1965 to the end of 1989 was about 202 t (6.5 million oz) (Jones, 1989). The incentive of sustained high gold prices and innovation in processing technology resulted in a significant acceleration of gold output over the last few years. Newmont Gold alone produced more than 43.5 t (1.4 million oz) in 1989. That is equal to 22% of the cumulative 1965 to 1988 output, and an almost 200% increase over its 1986 output. The same incentives produced even more spectacular exploration results. In each of the last five years, net additions to reserves and resources outpaced current production by substantial margins. These facts demonstrate the spectacular past prospectiveness of the Carlin Trend and the success of focused, multi-disciplinary exploration methods that made it possible to more than offset the recent accelerated depletion of gold resources. However, is this situation sustainable? How long can the mining companies along the Carlin Trend keep on finding resources faster than they deplete them? These are some of the questions that motivated this study. The authors have not quantified the future potential for gold exploration in the Carlin Trend nor established a deposit discovery path. But strong indications were discovered that the [ ] Carlin Trend remains a relatively immature exploration district and that the potential for significant new discoveries is high. Methodology and data The approach chosen to address the above questions was simple. The authors compiled deposit size data, measured in contained ounces of gold resources, for all known deposits along the Carlin Trend (Table 1). The resource information was obtained by adding cumulative historical production (adjusted for mining losses and metallurgical recovery) to 1989 year-end published resource inventories. In a mature exploration area, where most deposits have been discovered, this distribution would be expected to approximate lognormality and would plot along a straight line on a lognormal probability scale. This result was found in previous work by Allais (1957) and recently confirmed by Cox and Singer (USGS, 1986) in regard to various types of mineral deposits in several regions of the world. It was also found to hold true for oil and gas pool size distributions (Arps and Roberts, 1958; Kaufman, 1962; McCrossan, 1969). [ ] The data used were compiled by Newmont Exploration geologists. The purpose of the study is to make inferences about the underlying geologic processes in the district and the maturity of the exploration effort. Therefore, deposits were not classified according to ownership but according to geologic occurrence as known from current information. Newmont's Post and Barrick's Goldstrike and Betze deposits, for example, are shown as a single occurrence to reflect the actual geologic setting. The cumulative frequency distribution of deposit sizes was plotted on lognormal probability paper (Fig. 2). The abscissa shows the cumulative fraction of deposits at or below a certain deposit size and the ordinate shows the deposit size in thousands of ounces of contained gold resources.

Cyprus Sierrita Corp. has developed a training program that has led to several significant improvements in safety performance and productivity. Truck productivity has increased 6% as measured by truck cycle times. Increased skill levels and awareness on the part of the mine's operators are due to the new training effort. Costs associated with productivity training have been about $185,300. This includes program development and execution costs, as well as lost productivity during the training itself. These costs are offset by $1.9 million in savings attributable to the increased skill levels of technicians due to the training effort. Cyprus Sierrita is a subsidiary of Cyprus Amax of Englewood, CO. The company operates a copper and molybdenum mining and processing facility south of Tucson, AZ, near the town of Green Valley. The Cyprus Sierrita operation produces about 109 kt/a (240 million lbs/ year) of copper, 11.3 kt/a (25 million lbs/year) of molybdenum, 31.1 t/a (1 million oz/year) of silver and 1.8 t/a (4,000 lbs/year) of rhenium. The opera¬tion employs 770 people at the site. About 200 of these employees work in the mine operations. Mining at Sierrita uses standard open-pit techniques. Crews of 43 people rotate on 12-hour shifts. Hourly technicians are nonunion and do not use rigid job classifications to define pay. Rather, the system is designed to pay employees for what they are able to do. Administering this effort requires that training opportunities are provided to those people who desire them. Successful training opportunities al¬low people to gain skills. The more skills an employee can demonstrate, the higher his or her "tech level." Igneous rock exposures occupy only a minor portion of surface area (<18 mi2) in Arkansas, and are divided into two major groups: nepheline syenite (7 mi2) and syenite complexes (8 mi2), with various dikes and sills representing the remaining surface exposures. The syenite complexes have been the sites of major vanadium and minor titanium production during the past 50 years. Nepheline syenite exposures were important in the early production of locally used building stone; however, aggregate and roofing granules have now become the principal market for the production of nepheline syenite in Arkansas. Nepheline syenite intruded into a sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks in Arkansas and is exposed in two areas: in Saline County near the town of Bauxite, and in Pulaski County at Granite Mountain, just southeast of Little Rock. Although the central Arkansas region had been investigated thoroughly for bauxite by the early 1950s, the nepheline syenite resources of the region have yet to be evaluated systematically by the state. Arkansas nepheline syenite was evaluated for its ceramic uses in 1952. Some recent industry interest has revolved around its potential use as a sand-blast abrasive. The largest exposed areas of nepheline syenite, located at Granite Mountain, currently are being mined by the Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Company (3M) and McGeorge Contracting (Granite Mountain Quarry). 3M has been in operation since 1947 and mainly produces roofing granules. A fine powder produced by 3M during crushing that is marketed under the name Donnafill? recently has seen use as filler in self-compacting confined construction and as an additive (frit) in common brick. Since the early 1960s, Granite Mountain Quarries has produced a variety of aggregates, ranging from riprap to industrial sand, and recently constructed a computerized hot-mix-asphalt production facility. Approximately 4.5 million tons and 1.2 million tons of syenite were produced from Granite Mountain and 3M, respectively, during 1979. No production values are available after this date; however, combined production from both quarries is estimated to be at least 6 million tons annually.

The Sobek humidity cell has been in use with minor modification for more than 30 years to determine bulk primary-mineral reaction rates. As a result, it has become a key tool for predicting the bulk rate of sulphide oxidation, the Carbonate Mole Ratio (CMR) of neutralization-potential (NP) consumption to sulphide oxidation, and the rates of metal leaching. Most humidity cells are operated for less than a year, with the resulting rates extrapolated into the future for years or decades. The validity of these extrapolations was tested by examining longer trends from cells that have operated for three to seven years, as found in the International Kinetic Database (IKD). Additionally, large batches of cells for two minesites in the IKD (45 and 46 cells each) were examined to determine if regular, predictable trends were obtained across ranges of geochemistry at a minesite. The long-term cells show that the rates of sulphide oxidation and acid generation, based on sulphate production, have a 50% chance of stabilizing within one year, with the remainder fluctuating significantly throughout their test periods. Despite the fluctuations, the CMR, which is critical for defining site-specific or rock-unit-specific ABA criteria, remains relatively steady in many cases between 1.0 and 2.0 as expected from principles of aqueous geochemistry. However, if the sulphate-production rate falls below 10-30 mg/kg/wk, the CMR value can increase significantly. At and below these low rates, physical factors like flow rates of surface waters and groundwaters will determine the rate of NP consumption, rather than geochemical factors. Also, if weekly rinse pH falls to acidic values, the CMR will decrease below 1 .O, reflecting the exhaustion of fast- neutralizing minerals. The two batches of multiple cells also confirm these trends across arange of geochemistry. The long-term cells show that copper leaching often stabilizes within a narrow range as long as rinse pH remains relatively constant. Also, there is no strong dependence of leaching on the sulphate rate. However, the rate of copper production often increases sharply if rinse pH falls to acidic values. This suggests the measured copper-production rate in some cases is not a true primary rate, but a lower secondary rate after secondary- mineral precipitation within Sobek cells. As with the long-term cells, the batches of multiple cells show that copper production often increases gradually with decreasing rinse pH, with no clear dependence on sulphate production. However, high rates can also occur at near-neutral pH, so secondary-mineral precipitation of copper is not necessarily common.

"Recycling valuable metals from waste streams has become increasingly important to the mining and smelting industry in China due to resource depletion and environmental concerns. Predicated on multiple large scale metal recovery operations designed by BQE Water at active mines in the Jiangxi Province of China, this paper presents a case study demonstrating recovery of zinc and copper from the waste stream at a major gold smelter in the Shandong Province of China. One of the issues facing the smelter is the lack of a cost-effective and robust process to recover zinc from the acidic process waste stream. As such, significant amounts of zinc-containing wastewater are neutralized with lime, resulting in not only the loss of zinc metal but also the generation of large volumes of sludge. In the case study, a sulphide precipitation process is chosen to selectively recover zinc and copper from the wastewater, in the form of commercial grade metal concentrates that can be sold as regular concentrates at the going market price. In the current project phase, over 2,500 tonnes of zinc metal and 40 tonnes of copper metal can be recovered on an annual basis. This not only generates revenue to offset waste treatment costs, but also eliminates significant amounts of sludge that would otherwise require storing and further disposal if the metals are not recovered.Introduction / Background With resource depletion becoming a global concern and environmental regulations becoming increasingly strict, companies in the mining and smelting industry are actively seeking technologies to maximize resource recovery and provide concurrent minimization of waste residue production from operational activities. Mining and smelting companies have typically used lime neutralization as the primary method to reduce metal concentrations from mine waters prior to reuse or discharge to the environment. However, this process creates large volumes of metal laden sludge with long-term liabilities in the form of ongoing storage and management (Zinck et al 1997). Recovering metals of value from mine water not only reduces sludge volumes and the costs of associated liabilities, it produces a commercial grade metal concentrate that can be sold to generate revenues to offset treatment costs. ChemSulphide® is a sulphide precipitation process developed by BQE Water that has been successfully applied at mine sites in the Jiangxi Province of China to remove and recover copper from acid mine drainage. The success of these copper recovery water treatment plants demonstrates both the economic and environmental benefits of recovering residual metals from mine water and provides reference for the copper and zinc recovery project at a gold smelter in the Shandong Province that is the subject of this case study."

All uranium mills are required to perform sampling and analysis for radioactive particulates in their gaseous effluent streams and in the environment. Pacific Northwest Laboratory was requested by the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to provide technical assistance to them for their Uranium Mill Health Physics Appraisal Program. In conducting appraisals, air sampling methods used at NRC-licensed mills were reviewed and several deficiencies noted. This paper includes only environmental and effluent particulate sampling although much of the information is applicable to both in-plant and environmental samples. First, the components of a proper sampling program are discussed: program objectives, program design, sampler design, analyses, quality assurance, and data handling. Then the specific deficiencies, or the "pitfalls" from the first 8 mill appraisals are discussed. The first consideration in establishing an air sampling program is defining the objectives of the program. What is air sampling suppose to accomplish? Many of the deficiencies we have observed have resulted because the desired objectives were not clearly established in the minds of the radiation safety staff. PROGRAM OBJECTIVES An environmental air sampling program ought to fulfill the following seven objectives. The first is to: 1) [demonstrate regulatory compliance]. Although a goal of most programs, regulatory compliance, is not well understood. One has not only to comply with the conditions of the source materials licensee, but one must also demonstrate compliance with 10CFR20 and 40CFR190. For example, 10CFR20.106 states: "A licensee shall not possess, use, or transfer licensed material so as to release to an unrestricted area radioactive material in concentrations which exceed the limits specified in Appendix B, Table II of this part .... For purposes of this section, concentrations may be averaged over a period not greater than one year." Even if a mill&apos;s license does not require sampling at the site boundary of maximum concentration, a sample may be necessary to demonstrate compliance with 10CFR20. Most mill personnel are painfully familiar with 40CFRl90.10, which states: "Operations.... shall be conducted in such a manner as to provide reasonable assurance that: (a) The annual dose equivalent does not exceed 25 millirems to the whole body.... of any member of the public as the result of exposures to planned discharges of radioactive materials, radon and its daughters excepted... from uranium fuel cycle operations..." This means a licensee&apos;s sampling program must give "reasonable assurance" that the member of the general public receiving in the most exposure gets no more than 25 millirems per year. The sampling program necessary to provide that assurance may or may not be a license requirement. However, merely meeting the license requirements and the explicit regulatory requirements does not necessariarly ensure an adequate effluent and environmental air sampling program. The second objective of the environmental air sampling program, is to 2) [identify the source(s) of contaminants]. This will include not only the routine program, but special sampling for verification of sources and nonsources. Only after sampling can a mill operator be assured that roof vents, laboratory hoods, and other localized ventilation systems are not making a significant contribution to environmental releases. An environmental sampling program should also allow the mill operator to fulfill the third objective, to 3) [estimate exposures]. Even before 40CFR190, a sampling program should have provided the mill operator with the information necessary to determine the dose to the "fence post" person, or at least to determine if doses were well below the 10CFR20 limits previously allowed. The program should 4) [detect and measure unplanned releases]. If there is a fire, a scrubber failure, or if a drum of yellowcake breaks open, measured releases will almost always be lower than conservative estimates. Whether or not a system to provide sampling during accidents is needed is almost always a cost-benefit decision. In general, uranium operations do not sample just in case an accident may occur. Yet they may decide on continuous air sampling in lieu of intermittant sampling partially because of the potential for accidents. Another objective of air sampling is 5) [to provide information on the effectiveness of control systems]. This is always a concern with new or modified equipment and may dictate sampling frequency in other situations as well. For instance, if a small leak in a bag filter cannot be detected by other means, then more frequent stack sampling may be indicated. A routine effluent and environmental monitoring program should also fulfill the sixth objective,

The results of a study and effective use of flotation for processing of ores with complex mineral composition containing fine-disseminated minerals with high specific density are presented in the paper. The object of research was complex baddeleyite-containing ore from Kovdor deposit (The Kola peninsula, Russia). Baddeleyite is a valuable, rare mineral, natural Zirconium dioxide with 5.8 - 6.0g / cm density, grade content 0.15 - 0.17 and dissemination less than 0.2 mm. The authors carried out a thorough investigation of baddeleyite- containing products selected in different sites of gravity flowsheet. It was determined that due to similar specific weight some sulphide minerals (pyrite, pyrrhotite) come into concentrate together with baddeleyite and, also, minerals of pyrochlores group (hatchettolite). The results obtained revealed the possibility of use the flotation for retreating rough baddeleyite concentrate. he given gravity concentrate has a number of specific features, e. g. high density of its minerals which, in its turn, provides for high speed of sedimentation of solid phase in pulp, and for the presence of large amount of sulphide minerals (up to 10%) having good flotability. With these features being taken into account a technology for flotation of baddeleyite-containing products after their preliminary gravity concentration has been developed (up to 5 - 10% Zirconium dioxide). The technology has three flotation stages. At the first one the reverse flotation of baddeleyite is carried out during which "light" minerals (forsterite. apatite and carbonites) come into froth product and at the second one flotation of sulphide minerals and at the third one direct flotation of baddeleyite is performed from the underflow product. The following reagents were used for flotation: of phosphate type (sodium tripolyphosphate, mono and diethers of alkylphosphpric acid) and sodium xanthate as collector for sulphides. The given set reagents provides for high effectiveness of flotation due to selective of collectors and presence of froth layer with high carrying ability. New flotation technology of recovering of baddeleyite from complex ore was developed and applied at the Kovdor Mining Plant, using AKER flotation machines.

INTRODUCTION Shabanie mine, situated some 180 km east of Bula¬wayo, has been a producer of chrysotile asbestos for more than 50 years. The ore bodies occur in serpentinized dunite, which overlies talc-carbonate schist. A zone of relatively competent rock of varying thickness occurs between the schist and the ore bodies, which are gen¬erally less competent. The hanging wall of the ore bodies is economic, and the hanging-wall serpentine carries a variable subeconomic amount of fiber. It is important to note that, in general, the ore body competence is less than that of the foot and hanging-wall formations. Historical After surface operations ceased, cut-and-fill stoping was used to win ore from underground; this was success¬ful until the increasingly stoped-out area caused insta¬bility in the stope pillars and back. Consequently, dur¬ing the early 1950s, a gradual change to cave-mining methods was made, the ore being won by hand lashing in drawpoints, situated in the basement of the stope blocks, and passed through orepasses under gravity to the haulage level some 13 m below. About this time, interest was focused on the sub¬level caving method in use in Swedish iron ore mines: it was felt that it might be applied economically to the Shabanie ore bodies. Accordingly, in 1958, an experi¬mental stope block was laid out in which sublevel inter¬vals and extraction tunnel spacing were 9 m. The tun¬nels (ring drilling drives) were oriented on strike-in contrast to the Swedish system, in which crosscuts that retreat from hanging to footwall are used. The advantages of the method were quickly appre¬ciated by the operating personnel and, despite the in¬evitable teething troubles pertaining to the introduction of any new mining method, it was not long before sub¬level caving was providing a high proportion of the mill feed. The disadvantages also became apparent at an early stage, however, and, from that time to the present, continuing modifications have been made to mining lay¬outs in an effort to improve ore recovery. GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF METHOD The mine is served by a vertical hoisting shaft, in which two skips, a man cage and a service cage, provide adequate capacity for production requirements. The rock hoist is a Ward Leonard control hoist, in which two electric motors drive a common gearbox. The man winder is driven by an a-c motor. Several auxiliary shafts provide secondary egress and intake and return ventilation. Main haulage levels are above (Fig. I a and b). Blasthole fan patterns are drilled by drifters of 100 mm bore, drilling 41-mm holes; when a sufficient strike length has been drilled, a slot is cut in the upper¬most sublevel and the rings are broken into the slot. Initially, a limited tonnage is drawn, since it is essential to ensure that the hanging wall caves behind the retreat¬ing stope face. Once this has been established, maxi¬mum tonnage can be drawn, as described later in this chapter, under the heading "Draw Control." The broken rock is loaded by 0.14 and 0.20-m3 load¬ers into cocopans (rocker-dumping type of tipping truck), which are hand trammed to orepasses, discharg¬ing on the haulage where 11-t electric trolley locomo¬tives haul 3.95-m3 Granby cars to the main shaft bins. As is evident from Fig. 1, the layout is simple, the block is brought rapidly into production, there is a high degree of selectivity and flexibility, and the result is a low-cost high-productivity mining method. DEVELOPMENT Main haulages are developed at 3.2 x 3.2 m, and once the service winze connections have been completed the development of the sublevels is undertaken. The footwall drives are cut first, to obtain access to the block. These ends are of the standard section, 2.4 x 2.8 m, and from them crosscuts at intervals of 70 m are driven through the ore body to the hanging wall. These crosscuts are used to supplement the geo¬logical information previously obtained from diamond core drilling, and they provide additional and more de¬tailed data on fiber percentages and lengths, structural features, and other relevant criteria which are used to build up the geological assessment of the area and to classify it in terms of the geomechanics rock classification (Laubscher and Taylor, 1977). The crosscuts also allow the necessary orepasses to be sited conveniently so that tramming distances from the loading points are not excessive. Development Drilling Once the skeleton development has been completed, the extraction headings are developed at 2.4 x 2.4 m as shown in Fig. 1. Standard development practice is to use crews of a machine operator and his helper, equipped with air-leg mounted jackhammers, to drill rounds of 1.8 m with integral tungsten carbide tipped drill steel. The round drilled is a normal drag round, as shown in Fig. 2, but considerable attention is paid to the drilling of the perimeter holes to use effectively the

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND A program in France to develop personal [a] dosimeters has been initiated 1974. The patent on which is based the present device was obtained in 1972 * . From 1972 to 1974, the possibilities of applying certain ionograph track detectors to the spectrodosimetry of radon daughters was explored. The first prototype were produced in 1974. It took four years (from 1974 to 1978) to produce an autonomous dosimeter whose components has a sufficient life span, especially for the turbine motor unit. Qualification in the laboratory was obtained in 1977. In 1978 it was obtained in the mine for technology (autonomy of 12 hours and a life span of more than one year) and in 1980 for monitoring. 300 dosimeters have been tested in underground mines all together. Indispensable peripheral equipment were also developed from 1976 to 1980 : calibration devices, equipment to prepare and develop the films, read out systems. The concept of an "Integrated System of Individual Dosimetry" (ISID) based on a personal [a] dosimeter measuring exposure to radon daughters, thoron daughters, ore dust and external irradiation doses was proposed at the end of 1980. Since January 1st 1981, ISID is used on a routine basis in some french mines, situated in remote area, and appears to be very competitive with the ambiant dosimetry. The latest version of the dosimeter is produced in mass series since June 1981 and should equip all french mines in 1982. DESCRIPTION OF THE INSTRUMENTATION DEVELOPMENT OF THE DOSIMETER MEASURING HEAD The measuring head is based on the use of ionographic film to detect a tracks. In fact, the measuring head is a spectrodosimeter which measures separately over the period of exposure: - the potential [a] energy inhaled due to the decay of Po 218, Po 214, and Po 212 ; - the number of Rn 222 atoms inhaled ; - the inhaled total [a] activity of the five long-lived emitters present in the ore dust. The contribution to the total inhalable potential [a] energy of these various radionuclidesin a typical underground mine is studied in Appendix I. The measuring head described in detail in Appendix II, is able to satisfy all the implications made in the ICRP recommendations. Appendix III deals with the use of this measuring head in the cases where the equilibrium factor is lower than 0.1. This situation occur in open-pit mines where account must be taken of the Rn 222 contribution, which is no longer negligible in relation to that of its daughters. CURRENT DOSIMETER PERFORMANCES Table I shows the characteristics of the latest dosimeter. Appendix IV should be consulted concerning qualification of the dosimeter in the laboratory and in mines, technological development which finally produced the [a] dosimeter and its peripheral equipment, and technical presentation of the ISID (Integrated System of Individual Dosimetry) based on the concept of a multirisk personal dosimeter. Data on the installation and operating costs of such a dosimeter, which would seem to be competitive, are also given in this Appendix. ADVANTAGES OF PERSONAL DOSIMETRY AS COMPARED TO AREA MONITORING The results of the first eight months of experiments carried out under real conditions in an underground mine site are given in detail in reference 8. Area monitoring : The monthly exposure per worker to inhaled Rn 222 was determined from the knowledge of time spent in various areas of the mine and for the different mining operations, as well as from numerous and systematic sampling of the Rn 222 concentration in all work places. Personal dosimetry : The exposure to potential energy from radon daughters was measured by an [a] dosimeter developed by the CEA and worn by each of the 160 miners during eight months. In this way 160 x 8 pairs of monthly individual exposure values have been obtained which can be statistically studied. This test was decisive for us because it proved that the [a] dosimeter was technically sound (very few defects over one year for 160 dosimeters) and especially that personal monitoring devices were superior to area monitoring devices. The following conclusions can be drawn 1. The exposure distribution obtained by personal dosimetry is log-normal. This is true for the results on the whole as well as for groups of results relating to certain explanatory variables. See fig. la, 1b, 1c. 2. The exposure distribution obtained by area monitoring does not correspond to any type of distribution. If the results of personal monitoring are taken as a reference, area monitoring tends to underestimate the high exposures and overestimate the low exposures.See fig. 2. 3. [a]-energy exposures are underestimated when calculated from radon exposures and the equilibrium factor found in the considered mines. This is due to episodes or to zones of high radon concentrations not registered

Introduction For the past several years the Bureau of Mines has undertaken research to develop alternative mine material haulage systems that will improve mine productivity, reduce haulage costs, increase mineral availability, and conserve energy. One basic concept being pursued is a means for crushing primary blasted rock to a size that can be reliably and economically moved on conveyors. During 1980, mine requirements for this equipment and the capability of existing technology to satisfy these requirements were assessed. The study continued into 1981 on the basis that satisfactory equipment for this purpose needed to be developed. The objective of the 1981 program was to perform an engineering design of such a system. A mine survey and equipment development study was conducted in cooperation with the open-pit mining industry by GATX through its subsidiaries, Fuller Co. (a crusher manufacturer) and GARD Inc. (GATX&apos;s research and development center), under contract to the USBM. Results of a mine survey in the copper, iron, and molybdenum industries indicated that a universal crusher system could be developed even though details might vary from mine to mine. The crushing characteristics, including tonnages desired, were similar in all surveyed mines. Most mines had similar views about the desirability and frequency of crusher movement. The perceived need for in-nit crushing varied between copper and iron mining. The copper mines felt a greater sense of urgency for introduction of such a system, probably because typically greater vertical haulage is found in copper mines than in the iron mines. All mine personnel surveyed were interested in portable crushers and almost universally preferred gyratory-type primary crushers. They preferred large crushers, citing inherent reliability and durability, and the machine&apos;s relative freedom from clogging. Large size minimizes the number of crushers and conveyors needed. Analysis of desired crusher system characteristics (Table 1) fixed the crusher size at 1.5 x 2.3 m (60 x 89 in.). The 1.5-m (60-in.) feed-opening dimension could accept the largest material normally fed to the crusher, and the 2.3-m (894n.) head diameter could fulfill the 3.63 kt/h (4,000 stph) capacity requirement. Selected System Description The comments and analyses discussed in the contract report led to the design and refinement of a movable crusher system. This system represents the consensus of more than 100 mine workers and almost 50 construction and engineering company personnel. It is supported by more than 50 years of experience in crusher manufacturing. Although many alternatives are available for any given system, and selections are likely to be dictated by varying site conditions, the selected system is believed to be appropriate for most projected requirements. Final design would be dictated by mine operators during evaluation for approved projects. Detail design of the feed and discharge systems were not included in the study because they are mine specific. The basic system (Fig. 1) consists of a 1.5 x 2.3-m (60 x 89-in.) gyratory crusher on a structural steel frame. The frame is used as an operating platform for the crusher and as a carriage to move the crusher. The control tower includes a crusher lubrication room, a hydraulic equipment room, a switch gear room, a room for the motor control center, and a control room for operating the crusher and maintaining the equipment. The auxiliary system consists of a hydraulic rock hammer and pedestal crane with 74-t (80-st) and 14-t (15-st) hooks. Figure 1 also shows stairs, railings, and a work platform. Feed and discharge arrangements are shown on Fig. 2. The system shown is for mildclimate applications. Additional enclosure and heating would be needed for extremely cold weather conditions. Crusher A 1.5 x 2.3-m (60 x 89-in.) gyra¬tory crusher was selected for this application. This size can handle the typical throughput of 3-3.63 kt/h (3,500-4,000 stph) desired by the mines and the 1.3-m (50-in.) material to be crushed without difficulty. The crusher is the heaviest
