"An average of 1.2 fatalities occur per year in underground coal mines in the United States when a miner is struck or pinned by a remote-controlled continuous mining machine. Proximity detection technology provides a means to prevent these types of accidents by disabling all machine motion when a miner is in close proximity. Researchers at the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) have developed the intelligent Proximity Detection (iPD) system, which continuously tracks the position of miners near the machine and disables only those machine motions that could cause a pinning accident. This system, previously demonstrated using non-permissible proximity detection hardware, has now been shown to be effective when implemented using an MSHA-approved system as a platform. Performance tests have shown accuracy, repeatability, and stop zone identification to be comparable to or better than the system demonstrated with non-permissible hardware. INTRODUCTION Underground coal mining room-and-pillar operations typically use Continuous Mining Machines (CMMs), such as the one shown in Figure 1. When CMMs first became available, they were operated from an on-board operator’s compartment that protected operators from roof falls and other hazards but severely restricted visibility and subjected them to machine vibration and high levels of dust and noise. To solve these problems, remote controls were developed to operate CMMs. Now CMM operators are free to position themselves for best visibility of each mining task and are no longer subjected to the rough motion of the CMM during mining operations or the dust and noise generated by the machine. However, this technological advance removed operators from the protection afforded by the operator’s compartment and exposed them to the hazard of being struck or pinned by the CMM or other large moving machines."

Thunder Basin Coal Company has two mines located in the southern portion of the Powder River Basin. 60-90 km southeast of Gillette, Wyoming. The mines are principally located on federal coal leases acquired in the late-1960's. Development plans for the Black Thunder Mine focused on dragline stripping, but environmental considerations during the mid-1970's made truck-shovel stripping the method of choice when the mine opened in 1976. In 1981, the Coal Creek Mine opened as the first dragline mine in the Gillette area of the Powder River Basin. The regional terrain is flat-lying with occasional clinker-capped hills. The mines are located on the Wasatch and Fort Union Formation contact. The coals are Paleocene in age and the deposits are structurally simple, dipping gently to the west. The seams are thick and are classified as sub-bituminous-C. The Black Thunder Mine, with its 21 m thick seam, is strategically located in the center of the highest heat value mining area of the southern Powder River Basin.

"Design of effective mine water treatment plants depends on the ability to reliably predict treatment outcomes, but systems with multiple chemical and physical treatment processes and recycle loops can be difficult to model. GoldPHREEQC is a modeling framework that integrates mass and flow routing capabilities of GoldSim software and water quality calculations provided by PHREEQC, and is well-suited to modeling parameters of interest in the mining industry, especially metals and sulfate. Physical processes such as membrane separation and greensand filtration are modeled by defining mass rejections for each parameter and flow routing based on vendor projections and bench- or pilot-scale equipment testing. GoldPHREEQC models chemical precipitation processes such as HDS metals removal and gypsum precipitation by (1) performing surface-aging and solubility calculations in PHREEQC and (2) using the GoldSim framework to direct supernatant and precipitate to subsequent process steps. Users can apply this modeling framework to predict effluent water quality, chemical requirements, sludge production, and required equipment capacity to support design, troubleshooting, and cost estimating. The area of Canada with which we are here concerned consists of Yukon Territory and Northern British Columbia. Generally it lies west of the coastal mountain range and access to the sea can be gained at only selected points which are relatively few. It is served by the Alaska Highway as well as a provincial and territorial system of roads permitting transport of mining products to Whitehorse in Yukon Territory. This town it the northern terminus of the White Pass and Yukon Route, which system provides a rail service between Whitehorse and Skagway, Alaska a distance of 110 miles, and thence to Vancouver, British Columbia, by the coastal Motor Vessel C. J. Rogers, a distance of an additional 890 miles. At present the service between Vancouver, B.C. and Whitehorse, Y. T. is on a fourteen day basis. The coastal vessel, capable of carrying 3,200 tons of cargo, was specially designed and built in 1955 for handling containerized cargo and general cargo northbound, and containerized and palletized asbestos fibre, and palletized lead and zinc concentrates southbound.

"The East Side Access Project (ESA) involves the construction of geometrically complex underground structures including a large number of caverns and bifurcations. Initially conceived as dual lined structures with either traditional concrete or shotcrete final linings (SFL), construction economy, advances in concrete placement technology and scheduling among others led to a wide use of what is referred to as freeform or pneumatically applied concrete (PAC) for the construction of tunnel final linings. PAC is a method of applying concrete without using formwork, where a wet mix concrete is pneumatically installed to encase reinforcement to full lining thickness. PAC has been widely adopted at ESA well beyond initial expectations. The paper addresses the design and construction aspects of the PAC method and contrasts it to traditional SFL lining placement. The experience made provides guidance for future PAC and SFL applications. THE EAST SIDE ACCESS PROJECT AND USE OF FREEFORM CONCRETE The Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) currently transports commuters from Long Island into Manhattan, terminating at the already congested Penn Station on the west side of Manhattan. Once completed, the ESA Project will provide LIRR commuters direct access to the east side of Manhattan underneath Grand Central Terminal. The ESA Project will help alleviate the congestion at Penn Station, which currently accommodates New Jersey Transit, Amtrak, and LIRR lines; reduce travel time for LIRR passengers traveling to the east side of Manhattan and facilitate connections to the New York City Transit (NYCT) Subway System and Metro North Rail Road. The construction includes mining and lining of new tunnels and facilities under Manhattan and Queens. The tunnels run from Queen’s Sunny Side Yard through the existing 63rd St. Tunnel, underneath Manhattan’s Park Avenue until termination at 37th Street. Differing types of tunneling methods and final lining systems are being used depending on the ground conditions, geometry and size of the excavation, site constraints and functional requirements. Mining of the Queens segment of the ESA Project involved soft ground tunneling by pressurized face tunnel boring machines, cut and cover construction, and conventional tunneling. The Manhattan segment of the ESA Project involves mining in hard rock by tunnel boring machines, drill and blast, and road header."

During April 1967 a Frasch sulfur mine was placed in operation near Fort Stockton, Pecos County, in West Texas. This was the first Frasch mine to recover native sulfur from a deposit not associated with the caprock of a salt dome. Since 1967 two additional mines have been opened in west Texas, another one near the first at Fort Stockton and a third one near Orla in Culberson County (Figure 2). Recoverable reserves at the Culberson County mine are estimated to be 57,000,000 long tons of native sulfur (Zimmerman and Thomas, 1969). Total recoverable reserves at the three mines probably exceed 60,000,000 long tons, Studies of the geochemical cycle of native sulfur mineralization in test Texas indicate an origin similar to the deposits on salt domes although the geologic framework is different. A comparison of the geologic setting of the west Texas deposits with the deposits in the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics as reported in the literature, reveals many similarities. Today, aggregate producers in the Denver Metropolitan area, herein defined as Denver and surrounding communities in Adams, Arapahoe, Boulder, Douglas and Jefferson Counties, are scrambling to secure their future reserves. The Denver market is somewhat unique among the larger metropolitan markets in that the source of needed aggregate for the future is very much undecided. 2. Present Aggregate Resources Presently, the annual consumption of aggregate resources in the Denver Metropolitan area amounts to approximately 16 million tons of sand, gravel and crushed stone of which the later accounts for about 20%. Based on population growth projections for the front range, by the year 2000 the annual rate of consumption for aggregate in the Denver Metro area could be in the 25+ million ton range.

Three dimensional photoelastic techniques have been developed which provide information on the state of stress at any point in a model investigated. This investigation utilizes these techniques to determine the stress distributions in the pillars and the roof of a room and pillar mine model. Castolite plastic was used for the construction of the model in which a stress pattern was developed by the stress freezing process. Analysis of the stress pattern was accomplished by use of data obtained by observing points in slices from the model with a polariscope and solving data obtained by' the shear-difference method. Slices through the centerline, edge of pillar and centerline of span were investigated. Results of this work provide information on the overall stress distribution on points of stress concentration in compression, shear and tension, show relative magnitude of stress throughout the model and indicate directions of the most important stress values. A generalized roof bolt pattern is developed for room and pillar mines based on the stress distribution. A digital computer was used in the reduction of data and proved to be extremely useful for investigation of this type.

Not quite a year ago, during a speech to a group of mining professionals in Washington, DC, the subject centered around the long-range importance of conducting research projects and how much that research needs to specifically apply to health and safety matters in our industry. The point was made about the critical need to work together with government, private industry, labor organizations and academia speaking with a unified voice as we all march into the future together. The fundamental benefits of competitive research were mentioned --to improve our quality of life, to develop our energy resources, to achieve a safe and healthy environment and to ensure long-term economic growth. Very importantly, emphasis was given to the natural link that makes my agency, the Mine Safety and Health Administration, and the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health --NIOSH --the beneficiaries of each other's findings. Unquestionably, there are lines of separation. The main responsibility of the agency I represent, MSHA, is enforcement of the nation's mine safety and health laws. But we also have an additional responsibility and that is to coordinate and give priority to research in a never-ending hunt for answers.

The term bauxite was first used by O.P.A.P. Dufrenoy in 1845 for an ore which was discovered by Pierre Berthier in 1821 near the village of Les Beaux de Provence near Arles in southern France. His data suggested that this mineral was an alumina hydrate with two molecules of water. However, it was subsequently shown by thermal analysis that the mineral was a fortuitous mixture of the mono-hydrate and the tri-hydrate. Diaspore had been previously discovered in 1801 and gibbsite in 1822. The term was however retained as a rock name. The name of the village was changed to Les Baux around 1885; Sainte Claire Deville suggested that the mineral name should reflect this, and it was changed to bauxite (Bracewell, 1962, Rkgnier, 1988). Mining of bauxite began around 1860 in the Auriol region in the Bouches du Rhine area in the south of France. This ore was transported toMarseilles by carts and was processed in the Salindres plant, which at that time was the only plant producing alumina using the Deville process and aluminum by the chemical process. During that period white bauxite (low iron content) was particularly sought after for the production of aluminum sulfate, refractory bricks, and quick setting cement. Export of bauxite from France began in 1880 and was initially delivered to Chemische Fabrik, Goldschmischen near Breslau, and to Guilini's Ludwigshafen plant in Germany in 1885. These companies produced alum and aluminum sulfate (RCg- nier, 1988). The next bauxite mining operation was in Antrim County in Northern Ireland in 1873. This was first used for the manufacture of alumina refractory bricks and quick setting cement (Bracewell, 1962). It is important to emphasize that initially almost all of the bauxite which was produced came from France and was mainly used for non-metallurgical purposes. At that time even the production of alumina was mainly for use as a mordant in textile dying. However, with the development of the Hall-Héroult process, the alumina which was available was increasingly used for smelting to aluminum. In spite of this the demand for non-metallurgical bauxite continued to increase and a set of applications were developed. These include refractories, abrasives (including the recently developed proppants), high alumina cements, aluminum chemicals, activated bauxite, and alumina. It became increasingly evident that the high alumina-low alkali raw materials have special advantages. The question however was one of cost benefit. Chin (1989) has pointed out that the non-metallurgical operations have been traditionally grafted on a bauxite/alumina/aluminum industry tree. In less than two years, Stratmin has discovered, explored, developed, financed and put into production by open pit, a large graphite mine. The deposit, hinted by airborne electromagnetic survey, was discovered in September 1987 through various ground geophysical surveys, diamond drilling and trenching. The open pit started production in February 1989, feeding a nearby leased mill at Notre-Dame-du-Laus (Quebec), having a processing capacity of 400 tons per day. A new 1,000 tonne per day mill was built at the mine site, in Lac-des-lies (Quebec) and began production in April 1990. The Lac-des-lies graphite operation is currently one of the largest of its kind in the world. Mine and mill facilities are operated by Stratmin Graphite, jointly owned by Stratmin Inc. (75%) and Imetal-France (25%), a wholly owned subsidiary of Imetal (France). From initial exports limited to Japan and United States, Stratmin Graphite is now exporting in fourteen different countries, attesting to the very high quality of its products, with grades ranging from 92% to 97% carbon. Among the numerous graphite deposits discovered in Canada, Stratmin Graphite Inc. has emerged as the leader and virtually the sole crystalline graphite producer in North America, operating on a continuous basis.

In most resource recovery plants the incoming solid waste material is first shredded and then air classified into a light and a heavy fraction. The light fraction which contains mostly paper, cardboard, etc., can be used either as a fuel for power generation or in the production of new paper products. The heavy fraction which remains consists mostly of glass, ceramics, wood, ferrous metals and non-ferrous metals. The ferrous metals may be removed from the heavy fraction by conventional magnetic separators. After primary shredding, most of the glass and ceramic is fine in size and may be screened away leaving a residue of wood, cardboard, and non-ferrous metals. This residual heavy fraction is the input material for the separator described in the present paper. A new metal separator was recently reported by t. Schlömann1. The author described the theoretical relationships and presented results of tests on samples of the residual fraction of municipal solid waste. This paper describes the operation of the metal separator and develops the basic separation relationships controlling the process.

Specific software tools for Statistical Multivariate Analysis combined with real time process data were applied to Concentrator Plant at Compañía Minera Doña Inés de Collahuasi SCM in Chile, basically to two Mill Lines, each one with one SAG mill (32’x15’8MW)and one Ball mill (22’x36’9.7MW). The main objective was to empower the operator actions using process patterns references instead of process variable set-points. Pattern clustering and the analysis of pattern deviations regarding normal or desired pattern, allows for improvements in process control and the further implementation of soft sensors for those variables not included in the initial model.

The paper contains a subsidence measurement taken over a room and pillar panel of a mine located in northern West Virginia. A total of 72 monuments were used to determine a three dimensional view of mine subsidence. In addition, the results of measurements were used to compute ground strains with the use of a numerical model.

"INTRODUCTION Santiago de Chile is a 7 million inhabitant city which has a 103 Km long subway network operated since 1975 by Metro S.A. This network is used on a daily basis by 2.3 million people. In 2012 Metro S.A. started the biggest enlargement of the network in its history, through the design and construction of the new Line 3 (21.7 Km) and Line 6 (16.5 Km). The detailed engineering contract for civil underground works of Line 6 (L6) was awarded to the Consortium integrated by ZAÑARTU Ingenieros Consultores and GEOCONTROL S.A., in which Geocontrol was in charge of the design of 11 stations and 14.5 Km of tunnel. L6 crosses L3 in Ñuble and Ñuñoa Station, L2 at Franklin Station and ends, intersecting L1, at Los Leones Station as shown in Figure 1. LOS LEONES STATION DESIGN Location and Characteristics Los Leones Station is placed at the North end of the L6, next to the same named station of the L1 and it has four construction units, as is shown in Figure 2: I. Access Shaft (49 m x 47 m). II. Access Gallery (34 m long). III. Station Tunnel (120 m long). IV. Connection Gallery with L1 (104 m long). A singular feature of Los Leones is that the western section of the station tunnel, built from the access gallery, is located below an underground parking lot which is located in Providencia Avenue, as shown in Figure 3. It is important to highlight that the distance between the vault of Los Leones Station Tunnel and the foundations of the underground parking lot is only 6 m."

The Hardy Cross iterative method is the most popular technique for solving a ventilation network problem with natural air splitting. This method traditionally solves each mesh equation by an approximation during each iteration. Thus, it is interesting from both a theoretical and a computational viewpoint to be able to solve for an exact solution to the mesh equation. Presented in this paper is an algorithm for computing the exact solution to the mesh equation with a variable fan pressure. The algorithm uses signum functions for air quantities to generate an alternative mesh equation in the form of a quadratic equation that has two solutions defined by the well-known quadratic formula. The condition that the derivatives of the alternative and the original equations must be the same provides a basis for the correct choice between the solutions.

"The mining industry has recognized the advantages of high density backfill or ‘paste’, which is typically pumped with a hydraulically driven piston pump. Due to the discontinuous flow of this type of pump, pressure pulsations can occur in the discharge line. Pressure pulsations are an undesired phenomenon in pumping installations for a number of reasons that include: damage to the pumping system; piping and supports; disturbing noise levels; and even safety risks for operators and maintenance personnel.This paper describes an advanced system on the GEHO® piston pumps, which will prevent virtually no pressure pulsations from occurring, rather than merely reducing the already existing pulsations.INTRODUCTIONThe first GEHO® hydraulically driven piston pump was developed in the mid-1970s. It was an industrial design pump designed to operate in the high-standard industrial environment with regards to operating hours per day, duties, maintenance and lifetime of the pump and spare parts. This type of pump has a proven track record and has been further developed for the type of applications that we are describing today. The special feature of this pump type is its ability to pump extremely viscous slurry with solids content of up to 90% by weight, at high pressures. Typically, in the mining industry, this pump is used for tailings transportation, with a focus on mine backfill and is often referred to as a paste pump.In the 1980’s the hydraulically driven piston pump made its entry into the application of mine backfill, thanks to the high discharge pressure capabilities enabling the mines to pump higher density (i.e. higher solids concentration) slurries and pastes over longer distances.Part of the ongoing development was (and still is) the increase in discharge pressure and flow capacity to comply with the ever growing demands for high power piston pumps. In line with the technological developments and increase in performance duties, the popularity of this pump type increased significantly and many other industrial applications have discovered the benefits of this pump type.Together with the increase in pump discharge pressures and flow capacities the effect of an undesired phenomenon also increased: the phenomenon of pressure pulsations. Before we explore this subject in more detail it is important to first understand the design and the characteristics of a hydraulically driven piston pump."

Fuel is a major .cost for power generating utilities. Virginia Power is completing one of the nation's largest coal reconversion programs. As a result, 10 million tons of coal will now be used at six generating stations. Four of these stations are located on naviagable waterways. They consume over half of Virginia Power's coal. Historically, railroads have exclusively served these plants. In an effort to substantially reduce fuel cost, Virginia Power has reexamined transportation logistics and is proceeding with barge delivery. A phased approach was used by Virginia Power for the transportation program. Plant requirements were first identified. Coal sourcing issues were then examined. The concept of intermodal transportation was investigated. The bottom line cost savings was used as the criteria for continuing the project. The results thus far have been gratifying. Virginia Power has begun to implement barge transportation.

Belt conveyors have proven themselves for many years as a dependable and low cost method of handling bulk materials at high flow rates. The success of a belt conveyor system greatly depends on the initial loading of the material on the belt. If the material is loaded on the belt at the center, at approximately the same speed and with minimum impact, then most of all belt conveyor problems disappear. Proper belt loading is primarily determined by the engineering and design of the conveyor transfer point. This paper will establish and discuss some general design criteria required for proper loading and transfer of materials from one conveyor to another. Specific attention is given to loading points, chutes, skirt board length and general design of transfer structures.
