The gold-silver deposits of the northern Primorye region are located in the eastern part of the East Sikhote-Alin volcanic belt, where the belt overlaps the Kema island-arc terrain of the Aptian-Albian age. There have been four deposits and numerous mineralization points found in the NE-trending Kema metallogenic belt that is about 1000 km long and 100 km wide. The known mineralization is of epithermal type, controlled by faults, and concentrated in quartz, quartz-fluorite-adularia, and, less commonly, sulfide-quartz vein systems hosted by the Upper Cretaceous-Lower Tertiary volcanic rocks. The vein systems extend for hundreds meters along strike, varying from tens centimeters to 50-60 meters in width. They are surrounded by wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration containing some gold-silver mineralization for which the commercial value was not studied during the early exploration. The ore bodies contain from 1 to 50-80 ppm of Au and from 1 to 1000 ppm of Ag. Gold is native, associated with quartz, and represented by particles from tens of microns to 1 mm in size. Silver occurs in native form as a constituent of argentite, pyrargyrite, stephanite, and other sulfosalts. The test work carried out for three vein systems 20 years ago showed that gold might be easily and almost completely recovered from the ore by cyanide treatment. The paper describes the geology and mineralogy of the deposits, Salut and Primorskoye, that are the most studied properties of the Kema belt. It also presents the data available on disseminated gold-silver mineralization in stockworks, altered explosive breccias, and wide zones of low-temperature hydrothermal alteration. This mineralization should be explored for possible exploitation as large open-pit, heap-leach deposits.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is adding a third fan to operate in parallel with, and supplement, its two existing main fans. An engineering analysis conducted in 1995 identified the need for improved system availability and efficiency. The WIPP, located near Carlsbad, New Mexico, is a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Carlsbad Area Office facility designed to permanently dispose of U.S. defense-generated transuranic waste in a deep bedded salt deposit. Engineers at the WIPP performed a feasibility analysis for either modifying, supplementing, or replacing its two main mine fans. Since the centrifugal fans were installed in 1988, multiple operational and performance concerns have been identified. A comprehensive engineering study was conducted (K. McDaniel, et al., 1997) to: identify and quantify operational concerns, evaluate possible alternatives, and recommend an optimum solution. The study indicated that adding a third single-duty centrifugal fan similar to the two existing fans, and equipping that fan with Inlet Van Controls (IVCs) was the best choice. This alternative provided the most desirable combination of operational readiness, and improving system performance. The fan installation project accommodates several operational and scheduling constraints. WIPP is scheduled to receive waste in May 1998. This milestone is proceeded by an operational readiness review. Fan installation could not be allowed to compromise the WIPP's ability to declare facility readiness and had to minimize operational disruptions during the system tie-in. All engineering for the project is completed and physical modifications started in July 1997. The project will be completed in early 1998.

"A self-tramming remotely controlled mobile Dry Scrubber (DS) was developed by J. H. Fletcher and Co. under a contract with the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health’s Office of Mine Safety and Health Research (NIOSH OMSHR) to reduce exposure of miners to airborne dust. NIOSH OMSHR laboratory testing showed that the DS averaged greater than 95% dust removal efficiency with the disposable filters and averaged 88% and 90%, respectively, for the optional washable filters in their pre-washed and post-washed test conditions. Although the washable filters could be reused, washing them generated personal and downstream respirable dust concentrations of 1.2 and 8.3 mg/m3, respectively, for a 10-minute washing period. The DS’s velocity pressure regulated variable frequency drive (VFD) fan maintained a relatively consistent airflow near the targeted 1.43 and 4.25 m3/s (3000 and 9000 ft3/min) airflow rates during most of the laboratory dust testing until reaching its maximum 60 Hz fan motor frequency or horsepower rating at 2610 Pa (10.5 in. w.g.) of filter differential pressure and 3.97 m3/s (8420 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow quantity. Laboratory sound level measurements of the DS also showed that the outlet side of the scrubber was noisier and the loaded filters increased sound levels as compared to clean filters at the same airflow quantities. With loaded filters the scrubber reached a 90 dB(A) sound level at 2.83 m3/s (6000 ft3/min) of scrubber airflow, indicating that miners should not be overexposed in relation to MSHA’s permissible exposure level (PEL) of 90 dB(A) at or below this airflow quantity (1). The DS’s washable filters were not used during field testing because of their lower respirable dust removal efficiency and the airborne dust generated from filter washing. Field testing the DS with the disposable filters at two underground coal mine sections showed that it can clean a portion of the section return air and provide about a 50% dust reduction at the face area downstream of the continuous miner (CM) operation. INTRODUCTION Coal mine worker overexposure to coal and quartz dust continues to be a problem at underground coal mining operations in the U.S. The U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) recently changed the standard for coal mine worker respirable dust exposure from 2.0 mg/m3 average during an eight-hour shift to 1.5 mg/m3 average over the actual working shift, effective as of August 1, 2016 (1). If more than 0.1 mg/m3 quartz mass is found in the coal mine worker dust sample, the applicable respirable dust standard is further reduced to the quotient of 10 divided by the percentage of the quartz in the sample (1). Over 90% of the mechanized mining units operating in U.S. underground coal mines are continuous mining machines (2). MSHA inspector dust samples from 2009 to 2012 showed that 3.7% of continuous miner operators exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3 dust standard, while 8.8% of these dust samples exceeded the new 1.5 mg/m3 dust standard and 9.7% of these samples exceeded the reduced quartz standard (3). Additionally, roof bolter dust samples at these mechanized mining units during this same period have exceeded the 2.0 mg/m3, 1.5 mg/m3, and reduced quartz levels at 1.1%, 3.7%, and 10.6%, respectively (3)."

Two types of airflow splitting methods for improving longwall dust control were investigated by NIOSH's Pittsburgh Research Laboratory. These methods included a translucent mesh barrier and a staged spray barrier system to confine the shearer-generated dust to the coal extraction side of the long wall face while maintaining a cleaner split of airflow on the opposing worker walkway side of the longwall face. The translucent mesh barrier was shown to provide notable dust control effectiveness up to 60 m downstream of the shearer in both the laboratory experiments and a long wall field evaluation, provided the mesh barrier remains relatively parallel to the airflow. The staged spray barrier system showed marginal dust control effectiveness in the laboratory and subsequently was not field tested.

Sutter Gold Venture excavated an exploration decline into a mineralized zone in the Sutter Creek gold mining district. Delays in obtaining the conditional-use permit resulted in 7 to 10 million gallons of water accumulation in the decline containing elevated dissolved arsenic. Sutter received a permit to land apply the water after reducing the arsenic concentration to 0.05 mg/L. Initially the water was treated by co- precipitation arsenic with ferric hydroxide. Operational difficulties of this treatment system resulted in Sutter pursuing alternative treatment methods. The activated alumina adsorpting was selected due to its flexibility and ease of operation. Operating and maintenance data and costs will be presented.

The discovery of the Prudhoe Bay field temporarily reduced interest in the development of coal conversion processes, but interest is being re¬newed by the current energy crisis. According to M.A. Wright, Chairman of the Board of Humble Oil and Refining Company(l), the reserve in the Prudhoe Bay bield has been confirmed to be about 10 billion barrels. At first glance this appears to be an extremely large reserve which will eliminate supply problems for the United States for some time. This feeling of security is lost when one realizes that by 1980 the world will consume the reserves of a Prudhoe Bay or a Libya, or Venezuela in less than a year, based on the recent predictions of U.S. and world reserves made by Eastman-Dillon, Union Securities Company(2). Recent forecasts of U.S. demand and source of supply made by Kenneth E. Hill of Eastman-Dillon are shown in Figure 1. This forecast shows a decline in domestic supplies (excluding Alaska) after 1973, with the total domestic supply leveling off in 1975 at about 13 million barrels per day. Since the predicted demand increases from about 14 million barrels per day in 1970 to about 20 million barrels per day in 1980, about 35% of domestic consumption must come from imports or non-conventional sources by 1980. More imminent is the shortage of low sulfur fuel oil which has been created by the new, tough air pollution regulations that are basically legis¬lating eastern coals out of the market. As an alternate to importing large quantities of low sulfur fuel oil or importing and desulfurizing regular fuel oil, one of two domestic solutions is possible: stack gas clean-up or solids fuel pretreatment. Stack gas clean-up may be the cheapest approach for old installations, but fuel pretreatment has real advantages for new installations. "During the mid to late 1960’s, the underground potash industry in Saskatchewan was born. For the next four decades the industry operated at a steady pace supporting a large part of the world demand; until 2008 when the potash market heightened. Operators were motivated to capitalize on this increased demand, new mines were proposed while existing mines were planning upgrades. Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan (PCS) was one of the major producers planning upgrades to their production facilities quickly, including modifying the existing headframe and shaft at the PCS Cory Site to accommodate a new 1500 tonne per hour hoisting plant. Upon completion of the project, the innovative operations group continuously reviewed methods to increase production and reduce operating costs, allowing PCS to continue being competitive on the world market. This paper will describe the design challenges encountered during the development of the infrastructure around an operating facility whilst minimizing down time, schedule, capital and construction costs. This paper will also explore the strategy to increase capacity of the newly commissioned hoisting plant. BACKGROUND Potash production is a major Saskatchewan industry, and has played a significant role in the economy for over 40 years. Production commenced in 1962 when water problems were overcome at the International Minerals and Chemical (IMC) mine near Esterhazy, Saskatchewan. A surge of development by other companies resulted in twelve companies opening ten mines by 1970. In 1975 Potash Corporation of Saskatchewan was created by the government of Saskatchewan and shortly thereafter purchased several mines in Saskatchewan, including the Cory Mine (Cory), near Saskatoon. Cory has been in operation since 1968 and is located 12 km (7.5 mi) west of Saskatoon in central Saskatchewan. The mine is located in the center of the world’s largest potash deposit, 1,000 m (3300 feet) below surface. PCS has embarked on sizable capital expansions of more than CDN $7 billion. The Cory CDN $1.6 billion expansion was expected to raise operational capability of the site to 2.7 million tonnes per year, an increase of 1.9 million tonnes per year (MTPY). To achieve 2.7 MTPY of finished product and considering the 22.6% average production recovery1, 12 MTPY of ore must be hoisted to surface for processing. To deliver this rate required upgrading of the hoisting plant to 1500 tonne per hour (TPH). To accomplish this ambitious challenge, creative thinking, careful planning and a cohesive team was needed to work together to ensure the schedule, budget and most importantly the work was completed safely"

Among the wide variety of modern surface chemistry analytical techniques, contact angle measurements still remain attractive for wetting characterization of solid surfaces. The captive-bubble and sessile-drop techniques are the most popular methods for the examination of flotation systems. Systematic measurements of advancing and receding contact angles for several three-phase systems using the captive-bubble and sessile-drop techniques show that the contact angle measurements depend on the technique used and may differ significantly for some heterogeneous and rough solid surfaces. Importantly, it was found that these discrepancies in contact angle measurements depend on the bubble (drop) size. Contact angles as measured with the static captive-bubble technique are compared with those measured with the dynamic captive-bubble technique, in which the capture of a bubble at the solid surface results after buoyant transport and attachment The dynamic captive-bubble technique allows for the formation of much smaller bubbles than is possible with the static placement technique in which a bubble is placed at the solid surface with a microsyringe. Although this dynamic technique cannot be recommended for the systematic wetting characterization of solid surfaces, its significant advantage is the ability to examine the contact angle/bubble size relationship over a wide range of bubble sizes, from several micrometers to several millimeters in diameter.

Results are presented from a series of tests designed to determine the beneficial effects of the microorganism Thiobacillus ferrooxidans upon the leaching of uranium from a pyritic uranium ore. Minus 1-inch (-25mm) 0.0711 percent uranium containing, pyritic ore from the Rio Algom Mine at Elliott Lake, Canada was leached with lixiviants of various Eh and pH as well as being subjected to a biologically-assisted ferric iron leach. In all cases, the biological leach gave superior extraction. At pH 1.6, the biological leach gave 100.6 percent extraction and the ferric iron leach 69.8 percent. This improvement in extraction is associated with a relatively rapid biological breakdown of the pyritic material, thus liberating uranium mineralization associated with these pyritic materials and regenerating the ferric sulphate lixiviant in situ.

INTRODUCTION Volcanic tuffs on and adjacent to the Nevada Test Site (NTS) are being considered by the Department of Energy (DOE) for the possible geo- logic disposal of high-level radioactive wastes. The Nevada Nuclear Waste Storage Investigations (NNWSI) project was established in 1977 to evaluate such disposal. Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), one of the participants in the NNWSI project, has as one of its responsibilities the development of a rock mechanics program for the Nevada site. SNL conducted three small-diameter heater experiments in welded and nonwelded tuffs in G-Tunnel on the NTS, to investigate the thermal (heat transfer) and hydrothermal (thermal- induced water migration) behavior as part of the rock mechanics program. These two aspects were investigated to increase knowledge about the behavior of tuff so that predictive capabilities are available for use by repository designers, waste-package designers, and performance analysts. Also, knowledge of the behavior of the tuff is invaluable for planning and designing future in situ experiments at Yucca Mountain, the candidate site for the repository. The evaluations of these three experiments is the subject of this paper. Designers, analysts, and experimenters are seeking a better understanding of the behavior of tuffs under the influence of thermal loads expected from radioactive-waste storage, because of two physical features peculiar to tuffs. First, tuffs are inherently porous because of the manner in which they are deposited (Smith, 1960). Tuffs utilized in G-Tunnel testing have porosities ranging from 15 to 46%, which cover the ranges of expected porosities in the target horizon at Yucca Mountain. It has been established that the G-Tunnel tuffs have similar bulk, thermal, and mechanical material properties to those at Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984), thus, G-Tunnel testing can be used to evaluate the effects of porosity on the thermal and mechanical behavior. The second feature is that tuffs above the water table contain pore water that influences the thermal properties of the rock; displacement of the water must be accounted for in repository designs and analyses. For example, G-Tunnel tuffs, located some 600 m above the static water level, have saturations in excess of 60%. Similar percentages are expected at the target horizon in Yucca Mountain (Zimmerman et al., 1984). The presence of and the removal of the pore water affects the thermal behavior of the tuffs, and these three experiments were designed first to determine the phenomenological behavior and then assess influences on predictive capabilities. The focus in this paper is to present the results and evaluations of the experiments as they apply to improving predictive capabilities. The thermal aspects are emphasized by comparing the measured temperatures (in and around heater emplacement holes) with calculations of predicted temperatures using numerical models, so that the effects of significant parameters can be evaluated and integrated into future predictive models. Observation of the hydrothermal aspects is needed to assess the effects of loss of pore water and subsequent migrations on the temperature fields during the heating, and also to define the expected environment in the vicinity of the outer metallic surface around the waste. The metallic boundary can be either the outer shell of the waste package system, which is the main engineered barrier for waste containment, or the borehole liner. A final decision has not been made as yet about the necessity for lining boreholes; thus, the emphasis is on predicting the characteristics of the environment around the outer metallic surface. As the total cost of labor has significantly increased over the past ten years, older underground mines have found it more difficult to compete- in a limited demand coal market. Many of the older mines were developed extensively into a reserve requiring a large number of workers to maintain and rehabilitate extensive track haulages and/or belt conveyor systems. Often, a large number of fans were required to maintain minimal airflows in areas where poor conditions and huge leakages prevail. This paper focuses upon problems which beset one such coal mine and projects undertaken to restore it to potential profitability.

In the mid-I 970s the rallying cry sent out by the aggregate trade associations to aggregate operators was to come to Washington and help design national legislation mandating reclamation of pits and quarries. This collective effort paid off in that aggregate operators were able to assist in the design of "livable" legislation; however, the coal mining industry took some very hard hits. A principal argument used by the aggregate industry was that relatively small parcels of land are impacted, the operations are located in or near urban areas to serve in the development of that immediate area, and are of many years duration; whereas, coal strip mines disturb many acres, are of short duration, and whose products may have world or nationwide utilization. Historically, developments in reclamation are tied closely to the regulatory systems that have been created to control environmental effects of mining. Since reclamation generally results in a cost incurred after the stone, sand and gravel has been mined and does not add to the inherent value of the mineral, there was little incentive in the past for mine operators to reclaim the land. In 1977, the Surface Mining Control and Reclamation Act (SMCRA) became the law for coal mine operators. The law states that, among other provisions, reclamation must "restore the land affected to a condition capable of supporting the uses which it was capable of supporting prior to any mining, or higher or better uses". It is of interest to note that years before the initiation of legislation leading to SMCRA twenty-eight states already had reclamation regulations that covered virtually all minerals. The scope of performance standards found in the state reclamation regulations included slope stabilization, grading, revegetation, neutralization of toxic materials, visual screening, waste disposal, control of drainage, and other sources of pollution and erosion. Environmental legislation and the consequent regulations came about because the public perceived that private industry did not properly value environmental quality and as a result the government became the policeman.

The purpose of this paper is to summarize the research of the past sixteen years on three distinct methods of probing into solid rock. The first method is to use radar of the appropriate frequency. The second method is to use sonar. The third method is of recent vintage and uses techniques of nonlinear sonar also known as parametric sonar. The first two concepts, that of radar and sonar, are common to most people. Very few have heard of nonlinear sonar. Each of the probing techniques were investigated in order to overcome deficiencies in the former technique. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. It should be emphasized that all of these techniques for probing (or seeing) into rock are used in mines, and generally speaking not from the surface. Only in very special cases, such as certain very dry parts of Egypt or Peru, or, for example, the surface of the moon, will these probing techniques work from the surface. The reason for the development of these probing techniques has been to alert miners to possible hazards ahead of mining. Such hazards may be (1) old (unknown) boreholes connected with high pressure water zones above, (2) fractures that might connect to the Gulf of Mexico above the mine, (3) water-filled fractures that threaten the safety of miners, or (4) the discovery of dry faults ahead that can disrupt the planning of future operations.

"The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is closed immediately with an initial support within a short distance from the excavation face, has been increasingly used in Japan, especially, as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling. For reasonable design of this method, the performance requirements for the initial support should be clearly stated. The analysis of construction data of 30 road tunnels and the three-dimensional numerical modeling based on real data suggest that the immediate ring closure stabilizes the tunnel structure and the ground around it because of the inner pressure effect of the initial support, especially, for low ground competence factor and small internal friction angle. Finally, the bending compressive strength and the cross-sectional geometry of the initial support have to be considered in the tunnel design while considering the earth pressure and ground properties. INTRODUCTION Conventional tunneling methods often deal with difficult ground conditions such as soft ground or squeezing ground conditions. The immediate ring closure method, in which the entire periphery of the excavation area is immediately supported within a short distance from the excavation face (Figure 1), has been increasingly used in Japan as one of the most effective countermeasures against difficult ground conditions in conventional tunneling (e.g. Takahashi et al., 2011; Nakaoka et al., 2013). The immediate ring closure method was empirically identified as effective for reducing ground surface subsidence and tunnel deformation. However, the working effects of the method have not been clarified sufficiently. To improve the design of this method, the working effects of this method and the performance requirements for the initial support need to be clarified. The relation between the effect of immediate ring closure and earth cover has been clarified (Mashimo et al., 2008; Awaji et al., 2013),"

Use of geostatistics to solve mining problems is gaining importance as the cost of developing new mines is increasing and there is a need to mine more marginal deposits. But, until recently, coal companies have shown little or no interest in geostatistics. However, the stringent quality controls on coal burning has led to a surge in interest in improved methods for estimating clean coal characteristics. Until now, most of the geostatistical applications have centered on the problems of estimating in-situ coal characteristics (Sabourin, 1975; Wood, 1976, 1979; Fang and Stark, 1976; Pauncz and Nixon, 1979; and Knudsen et al., 1980). Little work has been done in applying geostatistics to coal washability, except that by Armstrong (1980). Applying geostatistics to coal washability basically means the estimation of cleaned coal characteristics, with the aid of geostatistics. Cleaned coal estimation plays a very important role in overall emission control strategy, as can be seen by the general flow diagram of such a strategy shown in Figure 1. The scope of this paper is limited to one aspect of the overall emission control strategy shown in Figure 1; namely, the prediction of cleaned coal characteristics using geostatistics.

At least for the time being, these seems to be general but not universal agreement that Mississippi Valley type ore deposits formed entirely or in major proportion from heated connate brines (e.g. 1) Even with that agreement, major questions remain. I will present a coherent geochemical model and look at alternative views in the context of that model. The data equivocally define much about the deposits. The answer is still elusive.

Evaluating and selecting the appropriate excavation method is a key to the success of any tunnelling project. The benefits and risks of different methods should be well understood by the designer and communicated to the project owner to enable selection of a preferred method from a technical, social and environmental impact, cost and constructability perspective. For tunnels that have an internal diameter around 3 m, depending on the tunnel purpose and ground conditions, both microtunnelling with pipe jacking and tunnel boring machine excavation with a one- or two-pass lining may be feasible construction methods. Using the Ferry Road and Riverbend Combined Sewer Relief Project located in Winnipeg, MB as a case study, this paper will discuss the benefits and drawbacks of each method, including technical design, social, environmental, cost, schedule, and risk considerations.
