The behavior of As bioleaching using Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans (A. thiooxidans) in mine tailings containing highly concentrated As contents (i.e., As=33877 mg/kg) was systematically evaluated according to the changes in temperature (25?40°C, pulp density=0.5%, pH=1.8), pulp density (0.5?4%, temp=30°C, pH=1.8), and initial pH(1.8?2.2, temp=30°C, pulp density=0.5%). The changes in temperature and pulp density affected the As leaching behavior more than the change in initial pH did. Based on the pH and oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) results, the As leaching was attributed to solution acidification. In particular, As leaching was accelerated with increasing sulfate production in the reacting solution. After bioleaching, surface of tailings examined that many pores which dissolved As were formed by a chemical reaction due to bacteria. The As bioleaching efficiency by A. thiooxidans was enhanced by the oxidation of both the added elemental sulfur and the sulfur compounds in the mine tailings. The As bioleaching efficiency was maximized at 50.5% under conditions of an initial pH of 2.2, reaction temperature of 30°C, and pulp density of 0.5%.

The conversion of maf coal to pyridine solubles and gas was investigated in a microautoclave batch reactor for two Kentucky washed coal samples (Ky. #9 and Ky. #11). Solvent hydrogen donor strength was controlled by the tetralin content of a mixed 1-methyl naphthalene-tetralin solvent. Primary liquefaction conversions greater than 90% in 10 minutes of reaction time at 427°C were achieved in liquefaction solvents with moderate hydrogen-donor strength (circa 40% tetralin). A modified irreversible first order rate expression, containing a parameter (a) to account for the intrinsic reactives of the maf coal, described the experimental kinetic data rather well. The integrated form of this rate expression is -k1e x = a (a- ß)e (eq. 1) Parameter ß in equation (I) is the pyridine solubility of the starting maf feed coal, x is the primary liquefaction fractional number of conversion, k1 is the specific reaction velocity constant and ? is reaction time. Primary liquefaction rate was found to be quite temperature sensitive and independent of coal when a liquefaction solvent containing 40% or more tetralin was employed. Primary liquefaction rate appears to depend on liquefaction solvent hydrogen donor strength for solvents containing = 40 wt.% tetralin. The intrinsic reactives in the maf feed coal or a appear to depend mainly on the inertinite group maceral content of the coal for the two coals studied in liquefaction solvents containing 3 40wt.% tetralin. In contrast, a appears to decrease in liquefaction solvents of low donor strength., i.e; solvents with less than 40wt.% tetralin.

Sublevel caving operation relies on the estimation of ore grade at drawpoints, as the mine management uses grade to decide whether the material at a certain ring should be loaded or abandoned. Grade is estimated in various ways, including visual estimation, density-based calculation, and sampling and assay methods. The grade estimation at the world’s two largest underground iron ore mines owned by LKAB in northern Sweden is based on the density difference between ore and waste. The calculations assume a constant swell factor, a theoretical fill of 100%, and a linear relationship between bucket weight and material grade. This study evaluated these assumptions in detail based on the loading data for 12,237 buckets and concluded that the method has some shortcomings which render the assumptions invalid. Further research is required to deal with these shortcomings to improve estimation of the material grade.

The disaster at the Upper Big Branch (UBB) mine 2010 has demonstrated the destructive violence of a coal dust explosion by killing 29 miners in the worst mining accident the United States has experienced in almost 40 years. This explosion brought to light that the United States mining industry must strengthen explosion prevention and explosion hazard detection practices. Recent legislation such as the Mine Improvement and New Emergency Response Act of 2006 (MINER Act) pushed the strengthening of explosion and disaster response and miner protection in addition to stricter regulations on the sealing of abandoned areas and on conveyor belt flame resistance. The focus of this new act was on how to respond to a disaster or explosion, yet not much improvement was made with respect to prevention explosion disasters. Researchers at the Colorado School of Mines have recently concluded extensive research into methane and coal dust explosion prevention practices and regulations as it may be applicable to underground mines in the United States. This research aims to forward more studies into the use and adoption of standards and procedures that have been utilized in countries with strong explosion prevention histories.

This paper presents a strength formula for the design of coal pillars. The formula is derived from results of laboratory experiments, studying the effects of primary factors influencing the strength of the coal specimens/pillars. Five primary factors, significantly affecting the strength characteristics of the coal specimens/pillars were identified and extensive laboratory investigations were carried out. The five primary factors were namely 1) coefficient of friction between loading platens and coal specimens, 2) elastic properties of the loading platens, 3) coal specimen geometry, 4) coal specimen size, and 5) rate of loading. Four to nine levels of variation for each primary factor on the strength of coal were studied. An empirical formula, implementing the variation of the primary factors affecting the strength of coal specimens/pillars, has been developed. A comparative analysis of the results provided by this and some well known formulae is also presented.

"The Functional Performance Equation calculated from a plant grinding survey defines two distinct ball mill circuit efficiencies and how they relate to total production rate through the target grind size. The survey data are also used to calculate a complete ball mill size distribution model, represented by the energy specific grinding rates, not just through the target grind size, but through all the size classes. Cyclone separation performance is represented by individual size recoveries to underflow. When these two unit operation performances are entered into the circuit modelling program (Streamline™), along with the circuit feed rate and size distribution, all the circuit survey size distributions and mass flows are perfectly regenerated by the program. The many issues associated with the historical Epstein (breakage-selection) models are eliminated. Once the circuit program is populated, pump and cyclone performance changes can be evaluated using a step-by-step procedure in order to maximize Classification System Efficiency. Mill water use and media sizing opportunities are also diagnosed in order to maximize Mill Grinding Efficiency at the size of interest. An example is provided. This circuit analysis and modelling system, and related training, is provided through a web-based application. INTRODUCTION Since its development (McIvor, 1988), the Functional Performance Equation for ball milling has facilitated new understanding of industrial circuit cause and effect relationships, leading to significant strides in operational performance. Success stories of this refreshing approach to plant circuit performance improvement are now too numerous to list. Finch and McIvor (circa 1986) also discovered that the Functional Performance “Mill Grinding Rate” at the size of interest was the same cumulative grinding rate that is calculated from mill feed and discharge size distributions using a first-order rate equation. By calculating these cumulative grinding rates for all screen sizes, a complete ball mill model is generated (as used by Finch and Ramirez, 1981). Others in industry, Hinde and Kalala (2009), for example, have noted the same. Lacking the complexity needed to maintain their interest, most researchers have ignored this model, broadly opting instead for Epstein’s (1948) characterization of grinding as a chemical reaction, combining “selection rate” and “breakage size distribution” functions. The much simpler ball mill model presented here has previously been incorporated into a proprietary circuit modeling program (McIvor, 2005) and used for plant improvement work (for example, see McIvor and Finch, 2007, and McIvor, 2014). Now, by combining this extremely business-friendly ball mill model with optimization criteria from Functional Performance Analysis, a circuit modeling system (including the needed supplementary steps to assure successful plant implementation of circuit design changes) is at the disposal of every plant metallurgist, grinding equipment/material provider, and circuit designer."

Evaluation of through-deck blasthole sample reliability at the Lone Tree gold mine revealed a non-systematic bias in the sampling system. Ore is primarily hosted within the Powerline fault zone. Clay gouge, present in the fault zone and typically enriched in gold content, forms agglomerates during blasthole drilling leading to a segregation error during sampling. Replicated samples split from blasthole cuttings piles show through-deck samples to be either significantly enriched or depleted by 1.5 standard deviations or more from the mean gold content of their respective cuttings pile quality of through-deck samples correlates strongly with quantity of clay present.

Meridian Gold Company's Royal Mt. King mine (RMK), a subsidiary of FMC Gold Company, is located approximately 40 miles east of Stockton, California on the western edge of the historic mother lode belt. Gold ore at RMK is associated with a series of northwest trending fault zones hosted in either meta-volcanic or meta-sedimentary rock types commonly referred to as greenstone sulfide and carbonaceous phyllite. Mineralogy studies show gold in both ore types to occur primarily as electrum in the form of 1 -20 um inclusions in pyrite with varying amounts of free milling gold. In carbonaceous ores, gold was not found to be closely associated with carbon. At the start of the current mining operation, three major ore resources were identified. North Pit and Gold Knoll pits were the major greenstone reserves while Skyrocket Pit contained over 60% of the total reserves as carbonaceous ore. Since North Pit and Gold Knoll were to be the first areas mined, the mill began operation in February 1989 with a flowsheet designed for greenstone ores with a carbonaceous expansion anticipated after depletion of the greenstone reserves.

Mr. William. J. Montgomery in his book "Theory and Practice on Mine Ventilation stated "Ventilation is vitally important to underground mining for three reasons: First, it sweeps all workings with a plentiful supply of air and drives to the outside the smoke, gases, and contaminated air which would be injurious to the miners; second, it dilutes and renders harmless the explosive gases emitted from the strata, thus eliminating the dangerous conditions caused by the accumulation of these gases; third, it keeps the mine air as nearly as possible of the same composition as the outside air, thus giving to the miner the healthiest possible condition in which to work...." Specific methods to achieve the above basic reasons for mine ventilation were established in the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969. Sections 303(y)(1); (y)(2), and Section 317(f)(4) of the Act, which can be broadly described as entrapment features, are controversial and debatable in the minds of many mining engineers in their intent and method for affecting, 303(y)(1) in certain cases prohibits the use of belt haulage entries as an intake for face ventilation, This is to say that air traveling in a belt entry will be placed into the returns and not used for face ventilation, 303(y)(2) limits the velocity of the air on trolley haulage entries. The regulations, as published in the Federal Register, have set this limit at 250 feet per minute unless a higher velocity is approved by the District Manager.

Separation of minerals by shape has received little attention, since minerals normally do not break into different shapes during crushing and grinding. However, comminution of consumer wastes generates opportunities for novel separations based on particle shape. For instance, ductile plastics are broken into longer curved shapes, whereas brittle plastics yield angular particles. Using spouting beds for particle separation in water requires controlling the spout's instability. The preferred geometry for such redesigned spouting beds is reported. Plastic cylinders, discs and spheres were separated as a function of rising water velocity and amount of particles in the system. By using 5 mm particles, differences in settling behavior could be video recorded.

A number of forces are at work that are now having an influence on coal handling systems. Changes are occurring and will be occurring at an increasing rate during the next few years. 1. Environmental concerns will dictate that dust pollution and spontaneous combustion and its resulting problems be rigidly controlled. 2. Slurry pipelines will be a reality despite the opposition of the railroads because they are economical and make good business sense. Artifical roadblocks can only survive for a limited time. 3. Coal is now and will remain the most economic fuel, particularly for power generation. This is true in most of the developed nations not just the United States. Increase in demand requires a close inspection of transportation systems. 4. A projected major increase in the export of U.S. coals may never occur without major port developments not the least of which will be the ability to accommodate large ships without demurrage time now affecting such shipments at U.S. Ports.

This paper describes the ventilation planning that was per- formed at the Barrick Gold Corporation, El lndio Mine. The El lndio Mine is located at an elevation of approximately 4,000 m in the Andes mountains east of the coastal city of La Serena, Chile. The ventilation planning program consisted of a detailed ventilation survey of the mine and the establishment of a correlated com- puter model. A series of network simulations were conducted to determine the optimum position, size, and configuration of new ventilation raises and main fan exhaust system. Modifications to existing mine infrastructure including; driving of drifts, slashing of airways, and positioning of ventilation controls were examined. Detailed costing information was developed to optimize the location of the new main exhaust raises and fan system. The final ventilation system is expected to increase the mine airflow from the existing 157 m=/s to over 315 mls. This increase was necessary to accommodate an expansion in mine production, diesel equipment utilization, and deeper mine development. Furthermore, the increased airflow was required because of the de-rating of diesel equipment and large air volumes necessary to dilute diesel exhaust at high elevation.

Several research groups have spent considerable time investigating coarse ore leaching. Coarse ore leaching includes both heap and dump leaching. The term "heap leaching" will be used in this paper to mean any type of coarse ore leaching. The results of their work are generally in agreement: the progress of leaching can be described by the shrinking core model and its associated mathematics. The shrinking core model is schematically represented in Figure 1. The particle is contacted by the leach solution on its outside surface and the solution migrates inward by filling the pores on the particle. As the solution filling the pores comes in contact with grains of ore mineral the reagent chemically reacts with the ore mineral to solubilize the contained metal. The solubilized metal diffuses outward to the particle surface and is washed away by the leach solution flowing past the particle. The leaching reagent in the particle interior is replenished by the diffusion of reagent from the surface of the particle to the interior of the particle. If the chemical reaction between the leaching reagent and the ore mineral is relatively fast compared to the diffusion rate of the reagent in the solution in the pores of the particle then leaching proceeds from the outside of the particle inward resulting in a "shrinking core" of unreacted ore surrounded by a "leached shell". The rate controlling step in the reaction can initially be a chemical reaction between the reagent and the ore mineral grain, however, once the reaction has proceeded a short period of time diffusion of the leaching reagent through the leached shell will be the slow step and hence the rate controlling step in the production of metal from an ore particle.

An infrared external reflection spectroscopy (ERS) technique has been developed to study the structure of the adsorbed layer of ethyl xanthate formed on copper and natural chalcocite (Cu2S) electrodes. The infrared technique provides information concerning the identity and the orientation of the adsorbed species at monolayer and submonolayer coverages. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies have also been conducted to monitor changes at the surface. The results show that the first oxidation peak on the voltammograms for copper and the first and second oxidation peaks on the voltammograms for chalcocite electrodes are not characteristic of a chemisorbed xanthate species, which is contrary to what has been reported by other investigators previously. As evidenced by the XPS spectra, there was an increase in sulfur relative to copper on the copper and chalcocite surfaces over the potential region where these oxidation processes occur. The spectroscopic results (ERS, XPS) indicate that the second and third (on copper) and the third and fourth (on chalcocite) oxidation processes recorded on the voltammograms are due to cuprous ethyl xanthate adsorption. The orientation of the adsorbed molecules of xanthate was observed to change with increasing surface coverage. Therefore, it has been concluded that xanthate can modify the copper and chalcocite surface in two different ways. At lower potentials, xanthate is a source of sulfur for the formation of a sulfur-rich surface. At higher potentials, an adsorption layer of cuprous ethyl xanthate is formed. Contact angle measurements show that both of these processes of xanthate surface modification lead to an increase in the hydrophobicity of the substrates.

The presence of ultra-fine particles affects the separation performance of wet gravity separation equipment. Several studies have been undertaken to establish the maximum level of these particulates that can be tolerated by spiral separators and it has been found that unless the ultra-fine material is effectively processed, relatively low proportions in the ROM material combined with high feed rates can result in degradation in plant performance and/or excessive water consumption. The maximum level of particulate material in the process water has been determined by examination of separation performance of spiral separators under varying slime loading. This work has been conducted utilizing various feed sources and a robust ‘rule-of-thumb’ has been derived.

OPEN STOPING An open stope is an underground cavity from which the initial ore has been mined. Caving of the opening is prevented (at least temporarily) by support from the unmined ore or waste left in the stope, in the form of pillars, and the stope walls (also called ribs or abutments). In addition to this primary support system of open stoping, some secondary support may also be required using rockbolts, reinforcing rods, split pipes, or shotcrete to stabilize the rock surface immediately adjacent to the opening. The secondary reinforcement procedure does not preclude the method classified as open stoping. There are many forms of open-stope mining used to extract the initial material from a mine. Having once established that the mineral and waste rock are competent enough to use an open-stoping method, and assuming that the reserve is not classified as gassy, the Form which the method will take is primarily determined by the dip and thickness of the reserve. How these two factors affect the selection of the open-stope mining is discussed in a later chapter. At this point it will suffice to say that the classification of the open-stopes mining system which follows is based on whether dry' broken materials flows by gravity or whether it must be moved by nongravity methods where energy must be supplied to move the material. Room-and Pillar-Mining Room-and-pillar mining is an open-stoping method where mining progresses in a nearly horizontal or low angle direction by opening multiple stopes or rooms, leaving solid material to act as pillars to support the vertical load. Since the direction of excavation (angle of dip) is below that which would cause the dry material to flow by gravity to a drawpoint or gathering point, the material must be loaded in the room where it was extracted and transported to a point where it will flow, either by gravity or mechanical means, to a central gathering point to be taken out of the mine. This is an important aspect of room-and-pillar mining which differentiates the system from other open-stope mining methods which rely heavily upon gravity to transport ore from where it was broken to a lower elevation, usually through a drawpoint. There are many variations of the method which go by a number of names in local districts: breast stoping, breast-and-bench stoping, board-and-pillar, stall-and-pillar, and panel-and-pillar are all basically open-stope room-and-pillar mining. In some instances detailed stope planning is almost nonexistent; i.e., the operator simply follows the visual pay values, leaves pillars only where necessary, and tries to locate them in the zones of lower value. This method of mining is as old as the beginning of underground mining itself, dating back thousands of years. Early in the history of mining in this country, the term "gophering" was used to describe this method (Peek 1941). The term is appropriate, for it brings to mind the exact results of this type of system-a random and irregular room-and-pillar mine. In other instances where the mineral values are consistent both in physical dimensions and quality, the mine layout can be planned to the last detail, resulting in a uniform room-and-pillar mine. Coal, trona, gilsonite, potash, oil shale, salt, limestone, and sandstone mines can usually follow such a system. Today, most metal mines using a room-and-pillar operation try to mine as regular a pattern as possible but deviation in height, width, thickness, dip, and grade of the ore results in comparable deviation in the mine plan. Variations of the Room-and-pillar System It is necessary to briefly describe some of the many variations of the room-and-pillar system of mining, enabling the reader to fully explore the concepts and become familiar with the terminology used before going on to the details of mine design. Full-Face Slicing: If in the process of opening the rooms the total vertical extent of the mineral values of the particular seam or strata are extracted from the advance of one vertical face, the term used to describe this is full-face slicing. This face is also known as the "breast." There is no mineral of economic value intentionally left either in the floor or the roof (back) to be mined later. To be able to extract the full-face height in one pass, the mining equipment must obviously be designed to reach as high as the back. In an Appalachian coal mine, this may be all of 660.4 mm (26 in.); for a future oil shale property it might be 15.24 m (50 ft). Normally, however, in a majority of mines where the mining face gets over 6.09 to 6.7 m (20 to 22 ft), the tendency is to divide the face into more than one pass. Over this height, it becomes difficult to properly see and remove loose rock from the back with a hand "mining bar." Where the process of taking down loose rock has become mechanized, higher full-face mining can be safely practiced. Most eastern and midwestern coal seams and western uranium, trona, and potash seams in the United States are easily reached in a single face; many limestone, lead, and zinc mines must resort, at least in part, to "multiple-slicing" to remove all the minerals of value. Multiple Slicing (also known as multiple-pass mining): In many cases it is not practical to carry the full vertical height of the mining horizon as a full face. The face is divided into parts known as the breast, bench, and/or brow. Since the introduction of froth flotation, the Florida Phosphate Industry has faced the challenge of coarse particle -850 +425µm (-20 +35 Tyler mesh) beneficiation. Several techniques have been used to upgrade this difficult size range. This paper discusses one approach that has met with success; namely, improved fractional recoveries through enhanced areation and improved material transport characteristics via larger than standard flotation cell mechanisms.
