This paper discusses the effect of grinding media composition, mineral type and slurry environment on the wear rate of various grinding media (balls). Sufficient wear data have been obtained and correlated with the modes of wear determined from examination of the ball surfaces using scanning electron microscopy. Five modes of wear have been identified to be operative under certain slurry conditions for the various ball compositions studied.

Attrition milling, once employed exclusively for the dispersion of pigments, has in recent years found a host of new applications in the area of mineral processing and mineral-pigment production. Broadly categorized, attrition milling is divided into two classes, as defined by the machinery's function, vibratory milling and rotational milling. Each mill type has been defined as a variation on ball milling and the terms, "vibratory ball mill" and stirred ball mill" appear in the literature. The primary design differences between attrition and ball mills are: (1) a stationary canister (or shell) (2) smaller grinding media (3) grinder energy is motor limited rather than gravity limited (4) strong media/feed size dependance.

In a systematic study, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) evaluated seat designs in low- and mid-seam shuttle cars during production operations at two underground coal mines in southern West Virginia. The purpose was to support, with additional data, earlier findings that NIOSH ergonomic seat designs (featuring viscoelastic foam padding and lower-back support) may help reduce health risks to operators of coal mine shuttle cars. Eight shuttle car operators evaluated seven seat designs (one already in use in each vehicle and five NIOSH designs) relative to perceived and measured whole-body vibration (WBV) exposure (including vehicle jarring/jolting) and discomfort. Operators’ perceptions using a visual analog scale (VAS) and questionnaire ratings were compared with International Standards Organization (ISO) 2631-1:1985 fatigue-decreased proficiency (FDP) limits and measured WBV levels on low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Objective and subjective data results indicated that NIOSH seat designs (with added adjustability, lower-back support and improved seat padding) performed better to reduce vehicle jarring/jolting levels and that shuttle car operators favored them over existing seat designs. The NIOSH low- and mid-seam shuttle car seats showed 45 to 77 percent better performance in FDP and 9 to 60 percent better performance overall in operators’ ratings. Considering the VAS results for low- and mid-seam shuttle cars under no-load conditions, operators rated the level of jarring/jolting 18 to 89 percent lower with the NIOSH seats. Reductions in measured vehicle jarring/jolting were 19 to 46 percent for the three-directional vector sum accelerations relative to the existing seats on the low- and mid-seam shuttle cars. Questionnaire responses indicated that operators for both shuttle car models rated NIOSH seat designs as more comfortable overall. Vehicle operators most frequently suggested adding armrests to improve the seats on the mid-seam shuttle car. A suggested improvement for the low-seam shuttle car was to make the seat a better fit for the operator compartment, which would enhance clearance between the operator and vehicle controls and allow for better seat adjustment and operator visibility.

The leaching behavior of copper powders recovered from waste printed circuit boards (WPCBs) was investigated using electrogenerated chlorine and aeration in a sulfuric acid solution with added NaCl and CuSO4. Various parameters were studied to understand the mechanism of the copper leaching. When the current density increased from 0 to 0.1 A/cm2, the temperature from 30 to 60° C, agitation speed from 100 to 400 rpm, and the size ranged from below 75 to 150 µm, the leaching ratios of copper powders increased. The leaching kinetics were analyzed using a shrinking core model: 1-(1-X)1/3 = kt, and the leaching process was chemically controlled with an activation energy of 14.7 kJ/mol due to Cl- ion catalysis. The ratios of [Cu+]/[Cu2+] at various temperatures (30, 40, 50, 60 and 70° C) showed a periodic variation with the increasing of the leaching time. The redox potentials of the leaching solution and copper leaching ratios in different conditions were measured. The result indicates that dissolved oxygen achieved the dissolution of coppers and electrogenerated chlorine can promote the dissolution of copper powders and improve the reaction rate of kinetics in the presence of oxygen.

The recent expansion of our cities into hilly areas, particularly on the Pacific Coast, has resulted in damage or destruction of many homes due to geological problems such as landslides, soil creep, erosion, subsidence, or groundwater seepage. In southern California, landslides are the principal cause of damage and attention is focused on them. Landslides have occurred due to the reactivation of old slide masses, or have been caused by grading and increased water, infiltration resulting from development.. Reactivation of a portion of the ancient Portuguese Bend landslide in Palos Verdes, Los Angeles County, affected approximately 150 homes. A common type of new failure' occurs when grading has undercut bedding or other essentially planar surfaces so that they dip unsupported out of slope. Other slides have occurred due to the inherent weakness of the material involved. Preventive measures undertaken to eliminate damage in the southern California area have. included areal geologic mapping programs-in-advance of development, enacting or strengthening grading codes, and requiring extensive studies by consulting geologists and soils engineers both during the design stage and during construction. In the design stage, proposed cuts are frequently flattened, lowered or reorientated. Frequently, due to the high cost of land, they are supported by compacted fill buttresses. As a result of these measures, the geologic environment has a major effect on the feasibility, design, and development of, a very substantial percentage of tracts or individual homes.

"The present study was carried out to develop an economically feasible and environmentally friendly technique to extract metals such as Al, Fe, Cu, Zn and Ni from electronic scrap by employing Penicillium chrysogenum strain KBS3. Studies were carried out in various leaching modes, including one-step leaching with combined growth and leaching phases (Mode 1), two-step leaching with alternative growth and leaching phases (Mode 2), spent medium leaching with separated growth and leaching phases (Mode 3), leaching with fresh growth medium without fungal culture (Mode 4), leaching with deionized water (Mode 5) and leaching with commercial organic acids (Mode 6). The main lixiviants produced in leaching Mode 1 were citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids in concentrations of 12, 2.5, 1.8 and 152 mM, whereas in leaching Mode 2, the concentrations were 15, 0.5, 1.0 and 1,162 mM, respectively. In leaching Mode 3, 63 mM citric acid, 23 mM tartaric acid and 29 mM oxalic acid was observed. At 5% pulp density, both leaching Modes 1 and 2 showed similar metal extraction yields from the electronic scrap at 35º C. Approximately 96% Al, 98% Zn, 48% Cu, 25% Fe, 66% Pb and 73% Ni were extracted in leaching Mode 1 in 14 days. In leaching Mode 3, 85% Al, 81% Zn, 97% Cu, 22% Fe, 50% Pb and 63% Ni were extracted in 14 days. The extraction yield of Cu was much lower in leaching Modes 1 and 2 (48- 50%) than in leaching Mode 3 (97%), as well as in leaching Mode 6 (98%) with organic acids, including citric, tartaric, oxalic and gluconic acids.IntroductionTechnical innovations in electrical and electronic equipment with new functionalities and designs stimulate consumer purchasing and lead a rapid increase in the production of waste materials. Terazono et al. (2006) have reviewed the data on electronic waste generation in different parts of the world. Studies by Bertram et al. (2002) have also affirmed that waste electrical and electronic components are the fastest growing waste category, which emphasizes the need for efficient recycling strategies. The recycling of electronic waste is an important subject, not only from the perspective of waste treatment, but also from the perspective of the recovery of valuable materials. However, the recycling of electronic scrap is still limited, due to the heterogeneity of the materials present in the products (Veit et al., 2005).Bioleaching-based processes offer a number of advantages over conventional pyro or hydrometallurgical methods (Lee et al. 2007; Lee and Pandey, 2012). These advantages include simple, inexpensive (in some cases) and ecofriendly approaches and the generation of less active leach residue relative to other metallurgical processes. Although biohydrometallurgical processes have been successfully applied to the leaching of metals from ores (Olson et al., 2003; Rawlings, 2002), data pertaining to the application of these processes for the extraction of electronic scrap are still scarce. Recently, a few studies have been undertaken for the extraction of metals from electronic scrap/ printed circuit boards (Brandl et al., 2001; Faramarzi et al., 2004; Ilyas et al., 2007; Ilyas et al., 2010). These studies were conducted with mesophilic chemolithotrophic bacteria (Acidithiobacillus ferooxidans and Acidithiobacillus thiooxidans), cyanogenic bacteria (Chromobacterium violaceum) or moderate thermophilic bacteria (Sulfobacillus thermosulfidooxidans). However, compared to bacterial leaching, fungal leaching has several advantages, including (i) the ability to grow at a higher pH, thus making it more suitable for the bioleaching of alkaline solid waste; (ii) a generally faster leaching process with a shorter lag phase and (iii) the chelation of excreted metabolites (e.g., organic acids) with metal ions, thus reducing toxicity to the biomass (Burgstaller and Schinner, 1993; Aung and Ting, 2005)."

The growth of computer and ground control technology in recent years, combined with an urgent demand for low-cost fossil fuels and mineral resources, has set the stage for full-scale utilization of computers in mine planning. Steeply rising production costs and the need to preserve the environment are placing great demands on engineers to improve their mining efficiencies, which can best be accomplished by applying the full capabilities of the computer. Pressure to develop and perfect programs with an immediate potential for improving mine de- sign, reducing mining costs and extending the viable coal reserves of the country has already come to bear in the form of exploding energy requirements, environ- mental considerations and the visible limitations of other energy sources. The computer program discussed in this paper, RAMPLAN (Rock Mechanics Applied to Nine Planning), was constructed as part of a continuing effort at Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University under the sponsorship of the Office of Coal Research to develop a suite of programs to benefit the mining engineer in improving mine design and evaluation techniques. This program averages out structural data values obtained from randomly placed or gridded point sources across a mining property and uses these values in structural design equations. The basic purpose of the program is to provide accurate estimates of mineable tonnages, based on a realistic assessment of structural conditions existing in the deposit, for use in subsequent evaluation programs. Program output, however, also provides sound engineering data for the mine planner to use in planning and laying out new properties. Mining dimensions produced by the program provide a good starting point for initial layouts; and as more refined procedures are developed for increasing and improving the quality and quantity of information from boreholes, this information may be used with increasing confidence. The rock mechanics principles utilized in the program are generally well-established with full details provided to the user. To produce meaningful results extensive input data, obtained from exploration borehole core data, outcrop sampling points, or mine samples, are required. To assist the engineer, details of the types of tests that should be conducted have been listed. By including all of the ground control equations in the program the otherwise long and tedious calculations can be performed easily and quickly, and the work can provide the basis for a more detailed ground control study. The program is written in Fortran IV Level G to run on an IBM 3701155 ASP and requires 156K storage.

Shortly after World War II, considerable impetus was given to use of truck haulage in open pit mines by the manufacture of large off-highway trucks. Mine management was quick to utilize this more flexible approach to open pit operation and in the ensuing years much time and energy has been spent to improve the basic concept. Dramatic progress has been made in drilling, blasting, loading and hauling with much emphasis placed on equipment improvement. In general, haul roads in open pit mines and quarries have received rather perfunctory treatment in studies of surface mining operations. Their importance to the successful pit operation requires more than a brief sentence saying, "Good haul roads must be maintained." Haulage costs account for approximately one-third of total mining costs including general costs and about 90 percent of the total loading-haulage cycle time is consumed in travel, hence, good haul road planning, construction and maintenance are mandatory for a viable operation.

The evaluation of industrial minerals deposits for investment decision making follows the same basic principles that apply to metallic deposits. For example, the quantity and quality of the mineral occurrence is assessed, engineering/economic feasibility studies are performed for various production scenarios, project evaluation criteria are calculated for each alternative, and finally, an investment decision is made. A more specific evaluation-related example of commonality between metallic and nonmetallic deposit assessment relates to the various parameters which impact project feasibility studies. There exists a suite of pertinent factors which must be considered, studied, and analyzed when evaluating any mining property. Table 1 is an outline of some, but certainly not all, of the various factors which should be considered when preparing feasibility studies on mining properties. Most analysts agree that all the factors listed in Table 1 should be assessed to some degree in at least one of the feasibility studies prepared during the property's evaluation period.

This paper deals primarily with roof bolting in Kentucky coal mines from January 1, 1949, through December 31, 1954, a six year period. The Consolidation Coal Co? (Ky.), a division of the Pittsburgh Consolidation Coal Co., began systemmatic roof bolting in November 1948 in Mine #204, Elkhorn #3 Seam, at Jenkins, Kentucky, After the efficiency of roof bolting had been proven by the Consolidation Coal Co., this procedure was adopted by other companies throughout the state. In December 1954, approximately 46.4 percent of Kentucky's total production of coal from underground mines was obtained from roof-bolted areas. Statistics in this report will show the progress made in roof bolting during the six years, in addition to the roof bolting being done as of December 31, 1955. Significant progress has been made in the coal mines of Kentucky in reducing the roof-fall fatality, rates, during the past several years by adopting systemmatic roof bolting. The ground work by the Consolidation Coal Co, (Ky.) in cooperation with the Federal Bureau of Mines was based upon the previous experience of the St. Joseph Lead. Cc, in its Southeastern Missouri Mines and The Tennessee Coal and Iron Division of the United States Steel Corporation. Over the past several years, state governments have been vigorously refurbishing old health department agencies and smoke control laws in anticipation of pending federal developments. Many states now possess a mature air pollution control administrative organization and a fairly sophisticated set of regulations on air pollution, This developing network of state control legislation and regulation is the machinery which will be called upon to implement federal standards, In order to prevent the wasted effort and resources which inevitably result from hasty action, industry should be in con- tact with local and state control agencies and be familiar with lines of communication to agency representatives. Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and regulations, both current and pending, is required. Moreover, federal law and future federal air pollution control plans, should be well known. Industrial air pollution control should be geared to a long range plan which utilizes existing technology while at the same the recognizing that today's technology will be improved upon with time, Regulation, too, can be expected to become more stringent. The implications of air pollution control in the Appalachian region of the United States will be felt most strongly by the coal industry of this area. Either directly or indirectly most regulations in these states have a significant bearing on coal mining, processing, utilization or waste disposal. The extent of coal-related activity in the Appalachian States of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee can be observed from the data provided in Table I. This data indicates that 86 percent of active bituminous coal mines and 69 percent of bituminous coal production were accounted for by these states. The purpose of this paper is to provide information on current and proposed legislation and regulations on air pollution in the Appalachian states, The information should prove valuable not only to the coal industry but also to industry in general as a means of evaluating both pollution control action that has been taken to date and the course of future control measures. Reference information in the forms of addresses of appropriate agencies and citations to specific state laws and regulations is provided. All information is current as of February, 1969.

INTRODUCTION Underground siting of nuclear power stations is drawing increasing attention in various parts of the world. Scandinavian countries took the early lead in this field because of their experience in the design and construction of underground hydroelectric stations and industrial plants, and because they have near-surface rock formations which are ideally suited for hosting large underground caverns. The world's first underground nuclear facilities were built in Norway (Halden) and Sweden (Agesta) and were commissioned in 1959 and 1963 respectively. Figure 1 summarizes the main features of these and two other small-scale European facilities. (1-4) American utilities and regulators are also for a variety of reasons assessing the benefits and penalties of underground siting. A recent study by Sandia Laboratories (contracted by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) focussed on identifying potential safety benefits of underground siting. (5) Although the study concluded that underground plants would have improved containment for some accidents, as well as better external protection, NRC, in assessing the overall benefits and penalties, decided not to impose mandatory underground siting for nuclear stations. Carbothermic reduction kinetics of ilmenite concentrates catalyzed by sodium chloride and the microwaveabsorbing characteristics of the resulting reductive products were investigated; the reduction degree of the reaction was deduced to be . Results show that the activation energy is 112.03 kJ/ mol when NaCl is used as catalyst, lowering to 23.11 kJ/mol for the final stage activation energy using sodium silicate as a catalyst. There is a sharp change in the reduction rate constant at temperature ranges of 1,223 K - 1,273 K and 1,373 K - 1,423 K. Microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products were measured by the method of microwave cavity perturbation. It was found that microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products obtained at temperatures of 850° C, 1,100° C and 1,150° C show sharp changes. Through X-ray diffraction (XRD) characterization, it was found that the formation of Fe occurs at a temperature of 900° C during the reduction process of ilmenite concentrate. The decrease of FeTiO3 content results in the decrease of microwave-absorbing characteristics, while the increase of Fe content gives rise to the increase of microwaveabsorbing characteristics. The decreasing trend is larger than the increasing trend, which is the main reason for the sharp changes in the microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products at the temperature range of 850° C to 900° C. When the decreasing trend is smaller than the increasing trend, it becomes the main reason for the sharp changes in microwave-absorbing characteristics of reductive products at the temperature range of 1,100° C to 1,150° C. Kinetics results show that sodium chloride can catalyze the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite, and microwave-absorbing characteristic investigations indicate that microwave heating can be used in the carbothermic reduction of ilmenite.

Good afternoon. I have entitled my talk "Investment for Progress," implying thereby a spark of friendly competition by private enterprise with such government-inspired foreign aid and investment programs as the Alliance for Progress. While the subject of foreign investment is hardly a new one, the perpetual flux of the political and economic surface of this earth we inhabit makes it forever timely and forever interesting. Especially do tremendous opportunities for international investment constantly present themselves to the mineral industry, and just as often must the industry approach these opportunities with a great deal of investigation and caution. This is not to say that the mineral industry--no less than any other industry--should be unenthusiastic about the foreign scene, but like everyone who proposes to put his money where his hope is, it should consider all the factors and weigh the possible disappointments as well as the rewards.

Thus, it is time to recall the value of geostatistical methods which were formerly developed as a money-saving and productivity-increasing tool. The situation has worsened, but the techniques of geostatistics have dramatically changed. Up to millions of dollars can be saved during exploration with simple use of variograms; then, during reserves estimation with kriging methods; and finally, with the parameterization of reserves, when evaluating a project and optimizing its global mining parameters.

Over the last six years I have been involved with the calculation of ore reserves and mine planning using various computer systems and soft- ware packages. This experience has given me a unique perspective from which to view the needs of the engineers and geologists whose job it is to produce geologic and mineable ore reserves. The purpose of this paper is to share that perspective with those who are in this field or are thinking of purchasing computer software to aid in these calculations. My first experience with computers in mining was the creation of a mini-computer based coal reserve and mine planning package written as part of my Easter's thesis. This package took about ten weeks to write, four weeks to document, and two weeks to install at the mine for which it was written. It did what it was designed to do, which was to emulate the hand procedure which had been used prior to its installation. The package was specific to its application which involved several small seams of coal being mined simultaneously and would have required major modification for it to be applied to a mine where, say, one thick seam was mined in two benches.

The natural hydrophobic response flotation method for beneficiation of printed circuit board comminution fines (PCB CF) still requires many studies to further basic understanding of the process and the flotation traits that the PCB CF presents. Varying particle size distribution (PSD) and water recovery under the scheme show that higher mass pull, obtained at the finer PSD, gave lower water recovery but higher value loss. The reverse also holds: the least mass pull at the coarsest PSD used, -106 + 75 µm, gave the highest water recovery per unit mass pull with the highest reverse recovery. This is unlike what obtains in primary resources processing, where higher water recovery is often with increased fines entrainment. The reverse recovery loss here is, therefore, more due to entrapment with the heavy mass pull characteristic of the method than to the entrainment of value with water. Other peculiarities of the system observed are discussed, with the goal of improving the performance of the process, and broadening the general knowledge of flotation systems.

Present methods of boring large hole mine openings are briefly reviewed. Factors that influence the design and choice of down-the-hole equipment for rotary drilling large holes are discussed. With formation drillability taken as a starting point, graphs and charts are given as an aid in the selection of bit load, circulation system, flow rate, drill stem, cutter design and rotary speed.

Cognitive representations and misconceptions of flow through circuits is an area which has received little attention from science educators, cognitive psychologists, or accident investigators. Misconceptions are also called Aristotelian thinking. They involve a person using primitive unscientific ways of reasoning to make decisions about events (Piaget, 1929; Nussbaum & Novick, 1982; McCloskey, 1983). The use of such primitive concepts leads to errors in reasoning about scientific and technical problems. The existence of misconceptions is well documented among children, adolescents, and adults involved in learning science concepts (Piaget, 1929; Cole & Raven, 1969; Clement, 1982; Mistrell, 1982; McDermott, 1984; Richardson, 1987). Concepts of flow through circuits are important because miners' conceptual errors about these aspects may be, in part, responsible for two fatal mine disasters. On at least two separate occasions, methane gas explosions occurred in underground mines when separate ventilation systems were connected (Elam, Fuller, Carter, Cavanaugh, Fesak & Painter, 1983; Fesak & Cavanaugh, 1984). A review of these disasters indicates that conceptual errors made by miners may have resulted in the accidents (Cole, Wala, Haley, & Vaught, 1987). In this study, co-author Andrzej Wala, stated that his research had "identified conceptual errors that may have caused the miners in these disasters to make fatal mistakes" (Cole et al. 1987), p. 167. Further exploration of these conceptual errors by Wala has led to the hypothesis that misconceptions of basic aspects of flow distribution changes in mine ventilation circuits, are at least, in part, responsible for some mine disasters caused by errors in ventilation systems (Wala & Cole, 1987). Why should these conceptual errors occur? Ausubel (1963) suggested that students come to a new area of study with their own conceptions or preconceptions about how a process operates. Furthermore, these preconceptions may be in conflict with the empirical data from the discipline. In such cases, learning becomes a process in which new concepts must displace or be re-molded from stable concepts that the student has constructed over many years (Clement, 1982). Given the existing research with misconceptions and the work of Wala and Cole (1987), it was hypothesized that experienced miners; either working miners, students of mining engineering, or professional mining engineers, harbored misconceptions about the formal or conceptual aspects of mine ventilation circuits. The misconceptions hypothesized to exist involved flow distribution changes in complex mine ventilation circuits; specifically, how does flow distribution change when a ventilation circuit pathway is altered? Given this information, the following research questions were proposed. Research Questions 1. Do experienced miners and mining engineers harbor misconceptions about mine ventilation systems? An ore zoning technique developed by Climax geologists during the past forty years has been used to contour drill-hole assay values on cross-sections for fourteen porphyry molybdenum deposits in western North America, including the Climax and Henderson orebodies. Detailed geological studies of these large, complex deposits are essential in determining ore controls, which are the factors most critical to the zoning of MoS2 assays and to conceptualizing geologic models. The technique provides a detailed representation of the size, shape, grade distribution, and geologic continuity of the individual deposits. It demands a disciplined approach and adheres to rigorous rules while maintaining flexibility for adaptation to widely varying geologic conditions. By defining the limits that guide and control manual, computer-assisted conventional, and geostatistical reserve estimates, it exerts a strong geologic influence on the estimation process. A combination of ore zoning and geostatistical analysis of molybdenum deposits produces a significantly more accurate, precise, and defendable geologic reserve estimate than other methods.
