Most Newfoundland. mineral deposits can be clearly classified as within rocks formed either as accreting plate margins (ophiolitic pyrite-chalcopyrite massive sulfides such as Betts Cove, Whalesback, York Harbour, chromite at Lewis Hills, and asbestos at Baie Verte), at consuming plate margins (Kuroko-type polymetallic massive sulfides such as Buchans and Pilleys Island, porphyry-type Mo-Cu at Rencontre, fluorite at St. Lawrence), or within plates (zinc deposits at Daniels Harbour, sedimentary iron ores at Wabana, manganese in Conception Bay.) As these metallogenic patterns can be convincingly extrapolated southward into the Appalachians and northward to the Caledonides, they provide an important means of eliminating and selecting areas for particular exploration targets. Sonic criteria are described for the recognition of these environments of differing economic potential.

In 1973, the United States production of marketable phosphate rock set a record in excess of 42 million tons. This production rate is expected to continue to increase, due to the growing international requirement for fertilizer, at a rate exceeding 5% per year well into 1977. This trend contrasts sharply with the reduced phosphate rock production levels of the 1966 - 1971 period. The natural consequence of this growing phosphate rock market is an evaluation of the variety of means whereby plant capacity can be most effectively increased. One approach toward increased plant production capacity is through large capacity flotation cells provided they can be successfully applied to the recovery of the relatively coarse product which is characteristic of the phosphate rock feed. This paper will summarize the results of a nine month evaluation test program, conducted at the Haynesworth Mine at Bradley, Florida in which the flotation circuit "specific capacity" (tons feed/ft.2 floor space) and "specific input power" (Hp/ton feed) were determined, and the feasibility of achieving economically acceptable concentrate grade and recovery levels was demonstrated, using large, high capacity, flotation cells.

Little did I know, in 1977, that when the A. P. Green Refractories Raw Material Manager showed me 5-6 burlap bags with samples of calcined high alumina bauxite in their testing lab that this was the start of China moving to be the number one user and producer of calcined refractory bauxite. According to Ted Dickson in his August 2008 Industrial Minerals article China produced about 4 million tons of calcined bauxite in 2007 using 2 million tons themselves. They imposed an export limitation of 970,000 tons in 2007 and 940,000 tons in 2008. A 10% growth will take up the difference between exports and production in 4 years. Two of these years are gone. It will take only 4 more years to eliminate the export quota in home use. Then they will be importing unless they increase production. Guyana was exporting over a half million tons in 1975 and sold less than 70,000 tons in 2002. Basai Metals Group bought Guyana?s deposits and is rose to 250,000 tons in 2007 and expects to produce 280,000 tons in 2008. PRICES According to the USGS Prices dropped from $172/per ton for Guyana calcines in 1980 just after the start of Chinese production to $122 in 1985. Guyana prices averaged around $120/ton from 1985 to 2005. China?s price dropped as low as $45/ton in 1995 undercutting Guyana and making it virtually impossible for anyone to get into the market. The price suddenly escalated to $550/ton FOB China in the summer of 2008 when China actually cut its exports in half. The price dropped in the fall as orders dropped. This is a four to five fold price increase. Is this a shortage of bauxite or a monopoly? Australia dropped out of the market in 2008 and Surinam, controlled by Alcoa, is not participating right now. Will these two come back in to make up the difference? Will the price hold up so they can make a profit? [ ] The low prices have undoubtedly affected the prices of the 60 and 79% alumina bauxite which can hold down the quantity of 80% plus calcined refractory needed in the world market. China is starting to upgrade lower quality bauxite up to 90% alumina. With high prices kaolin alteration to high alumina comes into play. The calcined bauxite is also used for proponents, Brown fused alumina, and abrasive grades which compete with Refractories. These and the tightness of supplies needed for metallurgical will hold prices up. TONNAGE China is the number one supplier and consumer of high alumina calcined bauxite in the world. Basai Metals Group Guyana (BMGG) is owned and controlled by Basai Minerals Group of China. This appears to be the second largest supplier. Australia has dropped production and Brazil is just starting to expand. It appears China is going to replace some of exports caused by the Export License 940,000 ton maximum in 2008 by raising Guyana?s (BMGG) production of calcined refractory grade bauxite. Companies exceeded restriction in 2007. Fines have been imposed for 2008. In August 2008 they appear on line to meet the 2008 quota. After August prices have dropped off as orders dropped due to the recession. Guyana was the largest producer in 1975 with 769,000 tons which decreased to less than 79,000 tons in 2002. The U. S. is a small part of the world production. I have used the United States charts to represent world imports because I have little data on what other countries import and pay FOB for their bauxite. China started exporting calcined 80% plus refractory bauxite to the United States in 1979 with 24,000 tons. By 1985 they were the number one importer with 169,000 tons. Guyana who had been number one in shipments to the United States gradually decreased to 36,000 tons in 2006. Guyana has been purchased by China BMGG and will increase there production to over 200,000 tons in 2009. Australia shut down production in 2008 and Surinam has elected to not send any Calcined bauxite to the United States. Carbon in the form of coke is used as a reactant in various chemical and metallurgical processes, The high cost of by-product coke along with its periodic lack of availability and high investment necessary for additional by-product recovery facilities indicate the need for a low-cost production unit based on a new procedure for coke manufacture, Traveling-grate coking-stokers were developed by Shawinigan Chemicals Ltd. to produce coke required for carbide manufacture, They were adapted to kilns so that the hot volatile gases could be used for lime burning, Their operation has been described in various patent disclosures (1, 2, 3), and their application to rotary lime burning kilns has been described by Andersen (4). Details of the process and plants have also been published by Kurt Baum (5,6).

Dwindling near-surface mineral reserves emphasize the need for the development of exploration techniques capable of greater depth penetration; geochemical techniques tradition- ally have been restricted to the search for deposits having at least a sub-outcrop expression. Rock geochemical techniques developed in Cyprus in 1967-1968 recognized anomalous conditions in volcanic rocks up to one mile from an ore de- posit. Research by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick has shown that some massive sulphide deposits in New Brunswick have well-defined halos of major, minor, and trace elements in the host rocks extending up to 1,200 metres (4,000 feet) laterally along the same stratigraphic horizon, and up to 450 metres (1,500 feet) vertically in hanging wall rocks which apparently post-date mineralization; well-defined halos have also been found in foot- wall rocks. Some of these halos are readily identified as individual elements or as element pairs; others are so subtle as to be recognizable only through computer-calculated multivariate analysis. Research continues to extend the dimension of rock geochemical halos for regional exploration and for identification of more restrictive anomalous conditions which may closely define the location and extent of buried sulphide deposits.

Procedures for the determination of the operating point that results when a fan is connected to a mine and placed in operation have been a source of confusion for decades. A variety of techniques has been proposed, often to the detriment of the practicing ventilation engineer trying to apply the techniques to the multitudinous mine/fan matching problems encountered in the engineering of mine ventilation systems. This paper proposes some different assumptions and definitions that simplify the solution of problems in determining the operating point. As a result, a set of procedures is provided for determining the operating point of a mine/fan system when the outlet areas of the mine and fan are known. To establish a major simplification in the development of procedures for the determination of the operating point for a mine/fan combination, the authors suggest that the mine pressures be redefined and then used in such a manner that the conservation of energy is ensured. This provides the basis for the recommendation that the fan operating point be determined using the fan total pressure and the system total pressure characteristics. This procedure can be applied to fans in the blower, booster, and exhaust positions equally well and to both single-fan and multiple-fan networks. Another advantage is that the method is applicable to fans with or without an evase.

The original patent for the gyratory crusher was granted to Philetus W. Gates in 1881. This first crusher was used by the Buffalo Cement Co. At the time these early gyratory crushers were developed all mining and quarrying, either underground or open pit, was done by hand; tonnages generally were small and product specifications simple and liberal. Likewise plants were small and demands for small product sizes practically nonexistent. In addition to substantial amounts of hand labor, the available material handling equipment was small, simple, and not suited to handling large run of mine ore. Mine can, cable ways, or belt conveyon transporting crushed material to the mill had limited capacity per hour. At the turn of the century the largest Gates crusher, the No. 9, had a receiving opening of 21 x 48 in. with a three-arm spider and a 21 x 80-in. opening with a two-arm spider. The steam shovel began to change the entire picture of open pit quarrying. As a result of the use of steam shovels around 1910 crushers with 48-in. receiving openings were built; thus it can be seen that the basic gyratory crusher was developed prior to World War I. The improvement of the internal combustion engine and the use of pneumatic tires created a new set of operating conditions. Early mines were small, using shrinkage stoping and small mine can. The capacity of material handling was small, limiting the size of the largest piece and the feed rate. Improved material handling resulted in more and more large open pit mines with large shovels and a tremendous increase in the size of off road or mine haul trucks or rail can. Primary gyratory crushers also increased with receiving openings as large as 60 in. and connected hp of 1,000.

This study presents the methodology and proposals for the restoration of an abandoned quarry in the Greek island of Milos. The local data (soil, vegetation etc.) of the island were collected, analysed and compiled into thematic maps using Geographical Information Systems. The restoration plan was based on the G.I.S. database and suggested the revegetation of the disturbed lands with herbaceous (grasses and legumes) or woody (shrubs and trees) plants. Plants should be indigenous or from other areas with the same vegetation type. Herbaceous plants establish and grow easily protecting the soil from surface erosion. The revegetation success depends on the seed quality, planting season and methods as well as local environmental conditions. Our proposals aim to restore the abandoned quarry with methods that follow the natural succession of vegetation, have minimal environmental impact, low cost and the expected result will be similar to the surrounding undisturbed land.

A photochromic material is one which undergoes a change of color when exposed to light and reverts to its original color when the light is removed. Review articles carrying extensive bibliographies have been written by Brown and Shaw (1) and by Schwab and Bertelson (2). Organics. Schwab and Bertelson divide the reactions in different organic photochromic materials into some half-dozen categories; Windsor (3) reduces these to the following three main classes of general interest, based on how they work. 1. Stereoisomers. Absorption of light breaks one of the chemical bonds in a. ring molecule, thus allowing the molecule to unwind and form a different geometrical arrangement. The reverse process is a reforming of the bond. Examples of this class are the spiropyrans and the anils. 2. Dyes. A triphenyl methane dye, for example, is oxidized by energetic light; the absorption characteristics of the positive ion so formed are different from those of the original electrically neutral benzene rings. 3. Triplet States. In the class of polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, ground-state molecules are excited first to a singlet state by irradiation, and then go, via the lowest triplet state, to an excited triplet state. Visible light is absorbed in the triplet-triplet transition.

There is little doubt that the stability of both highwalls and spoil piles is essential to efficient strip mining. Accurate determination of the appropriate geotechnical parameters will pay dividends during mining, but only if the mine operation closely follows the engineering plans which have incorporated These factors. Productivity is invariably higher in mines where failure of highwalls and spoil piles does not occur. This is the result of the reduced rehandle and better working conditions found in stable mines. Control of the waste piles and highwalls also leads to better coal recover since failures can result in the burial of uncovered coal, which is then lost to mining. Safety is an important consideration. The importance of providing a safe working place for employees and of protecting costly mining equipment is hard to overemphasize. For miners, working in areas where instability exists, the degree of hazard involved in their occupation is increased particularly where night operations are involved. It is true, too, that there have been many cases where loading equipment has been buried and severely damaged by failures.

A new minitest of in situ uranium leaching processes at reservoir conditions is proposed. The test which consists of a single observation/ production well and two observation wells is designed to permit the evaluation of both restoration and leaching parameters. It is shown that by using a straight forward history matching procedure, sometimes called a type curve analysis, both the rate of leaching and the ultimate uranium recovery can be evaluated based on the results of the test. Type curves are presented for the case in which the reaction rate is kinetically controlled and there are no other minerals competing for oxidant. Other situations can be approached using the same techniques as those presented here.

The history of gold and silver analyses shows an interesting duality. On one hand, classical chemical and instrumental methods have evolved to meet changing needs, but on the other hand, the age-old and somewhat empirical fire assay has remained a popular tool. Inasmuch as gold and silver generally have been present in ores at low concentra¬tions, methods have been challenged by a need for sensitivity and selectivity coupled with reasonable assay time. A progressive increase in the importance of low grade materials as ore sources has led to the need for improved methods. Assays of these materials are required for process control and accounting in operating plants as well as for guiding research and development activities. The analytical response to these needs is evidenced by numerous reviews published through 1977-¬e.g., cf Kolthoff and Elving (1966), Beamish and Van Loon (1966, 1972, and 1977), Young (1971) , Mallett (1970), and Sen Gupta (1973). In this paper we present a brief sketch of the history and status of various gold and silver methods. A more detailed summary of atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS) is Given, as this method has gained in popularity more than other assay methods. AAS methods currently in use are summarized and discussed briefly. This paper is not meant to be a detailed review, as are the above mentioned publications. Rather, we borrow from those works and more recent papers to report trends in gold and silver analyses (particularly in AAS). Also, we discuss some selected poten¬tial problems, and problems that have been experienced by this laboratory.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) is a common and well-known health hazard in the mining environment. The current approved method for monitoring both the organic and elemental carbon (OC, EC) portions of DPM is a laboratory method with a turnaround time of approximately one week. In order to evaluate exposure levels and take corrective action before overexposures occur, a portable real-time device capable of quantifying both OC and EC is needed. To that end, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) designed and tested a device based on narrow bandpass optical filters that is capable of targeting infrared absorbance bands associated with DPM. Five optical bandpass filters were chosen based on previous work quantifying DPM using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry. The resulting device, referred to as a filtometer, is optimized to exclusively determine DPM and could serve as a cost-effective, field-portable alternative to laboratory-grade FT-IR analysis and instrumentation. The performance of the filtometer was investigated by calibrating FT-IR data from DPM (dependent variable) to the filtometer spectra (predictor variables) using a partial leastsquares (PLS) and ordinary least squares (OLS) approach. A risk analysis on mine fires for all U.S. underground coal mines from 2000–2012 was completed to identify locations that have a high risk for fire incidents. The data for this analysis was extracted from the Mine Safety and Health Administration’s (MSHA) mine fire accident reports database. After identifying fire incidents from this database, a risk matrix was developed for underground locations that showed a significant propensity for fire incidents. This matrix associates the hazards and risks with the severity and frequency of their consequences at each location. These significant mine areas will be the concentration of future studies in fire behavior, suppression techniques, and simulation methodologies. INTRODUCTION Fires in underground mines pose significant hazards to personnel because of inherent restrictions to movement and limitations to egress routes. Despite improvements, mine fires remain serious hazards in underground coal mine. In order to better mitigate the risks from fire hazards in the modern underground mining environment, a better understanding of where fire events occur must be gained. The following paper presents an investigation on the number of fatal and non-fatal incidents in underground coal mines fires from 2000 to 2012. Three phases of risk assessment (i.e., risk identification, estimation, and evaluation) were applied to the recorded fire events from the MSHA incident database that occurred during this time period. Using this process, a fire hazard was first defined. This definition was then used to identify any incidents that had occurred as a result of the defined hazards. The seriousness of the injuries and damages were finally quantified for each incident though an estimate of severity and frequency and then aggregated according to underground location (ISO, 1999; Van Duijne, 2008). Using this approach, locations prone to incidents resulting from fire hazards were first identified. The risk for the occurrence a fire incident in general was then estimated for each of the identified locations. The results of this assessment will be used to improve fire simulation techniques for the identified, high risk underground locations. RISK IDENTIFICATION A risk for this assessment was defined as any single occurrence of a fire initiated by the ignition of gas, dust, or electricity. Each recorded occurrence of such an event in the MSHA incident database was counted as a single fire incident. Both non-fatal incidents that were reportable but did not result in a fatality and fatal incidents that fell into the aforementioned criteria were counted. Incidents in the MSHA database that were already classified as “generic” were not considered. The remaining incidents were then totaled and aggregated according to the underground location in which they occurred. In previous studies, a number of locations, which are listed in Table 1, were highlighted as high fire hazard areas (McDonald et al, 1980; Pomroy et al, 1995; De Rosa, 2004). These locations were used to group the fire incidents extracted from the MSHA incident database. The compiled numbers of non-fatal and fatal underground coal fire incidents from 2000 to 2012 are displayed in Table 1.

In Switzerland at present, the longest railway tunnels in the world, the Gotthard(57 km) and the Loetschberg base tunnel (34km) are under construction. For thischallenge six high-tech HERRENKNECHT Hard Rock Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM)are applied, which have to excavate approx. 80 km at the Gotthard and 20 km at the Loetschberg Tunnels. The machines being used are of a single Gripper-TBM type, which are equipped with the latest rock support techniques, in order to optimize the quality of the working conditions for the personnel which have direct impact on the quality of the tunnels. The different requirements of the projects based on different speci?cations within the tender documents led to completely different TBM concepts which will be reviewed in detail in this paper.

New York State’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has undertaken the largest transportation project in New York City. The East Side Access Project (ESA) will introduce MTA’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) service to the East Side of Manhattan, to a new terminal located beneath the existing, landmark Grand Central Terminal(GCT). Construction of the Manhattan Segment of the project will affect overlying operating facilities of two other MTA entities, Metro-North Railroad (MNR) and New York City Transit (NYCT) and major Midtown Manhattan buildings. The paper describes the evolution of the GCT concept at Manhattan from a shallow alternative proposed by a Major Investment Study (MIS), that would require extensive underpinning of multi-story buildings and have considerable impact on MNR and NYCT operations, to a deep alternative with lesser risk and potential for disruption.

Gravity separators such as spirals are commonly used in multistage cleaning and scavenging circuits to improve the quality and recovery of concentrates produced in the industrial minerals industry. Unfortunately, field surveys suggest that many industrial operations are poorly configured in terms of equipment layout. This shortcoming can often be attributed to a failure by engineers to make use of fundamental process engineering tools for circuit design. One of the most important of these is linear circuit analysis. This powerful tool makes it possible to mathematically compare the relative efficiency of circuit configurations in advance of experimental testing. This article provides a basic review of the linear circuit analysis concept and discusses some of the key insights it provides for the layout of multistage circuits. An industrial case study is provided to show the tremendous impact that this process engineering tool can have on the design of multistage spiral circuits in a heavy mineral wet plant.

A new flotation collector, benzyl arsonic acid, was used for the flotation of ilmenite. ESCA, Auger spectroscopy, and chemical analysis were used to investigate the correlation between the variation in surface constituents and the flotation recovery of ilmenite. Experiments indicated that, as the ratio of surface Ti ions/surface Fe ions increases, flotation recovery increases. pH regulation with an inorganic acid was found to be effective in changing the ratio of surface ions, and, hence, the flotation recovery.

Increased emphasis on industrial pollution control has intensified investigation of waste treatment technology for methods of reducing the amount of pollutants discharged by industry. The mining and mineral processing industry can point to a record of considerable accomplishment in the field of wastewater treatment and reclamation because these operations are so frequently an integral part of the entire operation of an ore dressing facility. This is amply demonstrated by metal producers in the arid regions of the Southwest where water shortages require maximum use of available water. For example, the copper industry in Arizona during 1960 employed an estimated 184 billion gallons of water of which 87% was reused water. (1) Only 0.0003% was discharged to streams and the remainder was consumed by evaporation (8%) and seepage (5%). The most severe pollution problem facing the mining and ore processing industry today is that resulting from acid mine drainage. This problem is largely associated with the mining of coal although it occurs to a lesser degree with the mining of other materials. The degradation of streams by acid mine drainage in the vicinity' of the Appalachian coal fields has been widely publicized and a major effort is underway to determine the best means of correcting this situation. Other forms of pollution from mining operations are less well-known, but it is anticipated that improved or advanced waste treatment techniques will be required for segments of the industry to comply with new pollution control regulations. The current emphasis on redefining hazardous levels for heavy metals and various chemicals with regard to the total environment will in all likelihood lead to tighter discharge controls in some cases. Highwall mining is a mining method to extract coal from a final boundary in open cut mining, trench mining or contour mining. This boundary may have been reached because of economic constraints (economic strip limit) or geographic constraints (spoil heaps, rivers etc.). Coal is mined from visible, horizontal, or near horizontal coal seams by making rectangular, parallel, unsupported drives with an unmanned cutterhead and coal transport system. This is controlled from a mining unit, or launch frame, positioned outside the drive, in front of the highwall. Removal of overburden is not required or is limited to small quantities only. Highwall Mining originated in the 1940 in the Appalachian Coal Field. This paper describes the history of the various machines that have been designed for highwall mining. During the 1990 and later, there has been more emphasis on the safety in highwall mining. Many pillar strength formulae have been derived to determine the required width of pillars in highwall mining and, with that, the economic feasibility of highwall mining. The various pillar strength criteria will be discussed in this paper showing the countries where they are applied. In order to make highwall mining equipment safer and more productive, there have been quite some technological improvements applied to the machines. These technologies make highwall mining ready for the future as a serious mining method, also outside its traditional Appalachian mining area.
