Lack of visibility from large, open-pit haulage truck cabs has become a serious safety problem. Anaconda conducted a research program to develop a low cost system to alert haulage truck operators to small vehicles present in blind areas. Several systems were developed and tested. As open-pit haulage truck size has increased, so has the size of the blind areas. Mine utility vehicles, pickup trucks, and cars are concealed within these blind areas and become safety hazards. Figure 1 shows the typical blind areas of a 136 t (150-ton) haulage truck. The areas of greatest concern are at the rear center and front right corner of the truck. In these "no visibility" areas many small vehicles have been crushed by large haulage trucks at various mine sites. In most instances, the occupants escaped the vehicle before it was destroyed. But injuries and death have occurred. In most cases, the accidents were attributed to negligence or carelessness by the small vehicle driver. The limited visibility problem still exists, though, and a solution is needed. Initial Solution The usual plane mirror on the driver's side and the convex mirror on the right front of the haulage truck allow only limited rear visibility. The typical, right side convex mirror is generally small and difficult to locate at a glance. This convex mirror also presents an image that distorts distance perception. These mirrors are of¬ten broken and immediate replacement not demanded or made. The US Bureau of Mines, in a contract with M.B. Associates, San Ramon, CA, developed an improved visibility system. It consisted of a larger, left view mirror and unique, blind area viewer. The large 230 x 690 mm (9 x 27 in.) left mirror has a small convex spot mirror near the bottom. The entire unit can be quickly replaced if broken. The large size provides a full view of driver orientation features such as the rear tire and the top of the load bed. The right 300 x 410 mm (12 x 16 in.) mirror has a convex surface and is quite rugged. The 510 mm (20 in.) spherical radius presents the operator with some distance distortion, but objects in its view are easily seen. The "blind area viewer" consists of a modified fresnel lens that allows the driver to "look around the corner." Installation of three of these lenses on the front of each haulage truck is rec¬ommended for adequate blind area coverage. This system significantly increases an operator's field of view and allows viewing of objects within about 3 m (9.8 ft of the truck. Many open-pit mines are nor mounting on smaller vehicles a long whip with a flag and lamp or both. This increases vehicle visibility to haulage truck operators. The whip is permanently attached to the mine vehicle. It can also be magnetically attached to transient vehicles. The whip system. though, is inadequate for visibility in the critical rear and right front blind areas. Alternate Solutions All of these visibility aids as¬sume an attentive driver. In addi¬tion, areas such as the rear blinc, area are not covered. Based on the inadequacy of existing visibility systems, Anaconda made a com mitment to further the truck de¬tection technology. The best ap¬proach was considered to be ar active system. It would notify the haulage truck operator that an en¬croaching vehicle is present. Sev¬eral systems were considered, in¬cluding ultrasonics and elec¬tromagnetics. For the ultrasonic system, com mercial and in-house design were looked at. Designing an( building transducers with the spe cific beam shape to match the haulage truck blind spots re¬quired a major technological breakthrough. False alarms ap¬peared difficult to prevent en¬tirely. They were caused by pass¬ing, trailing, or leading vehicles a., well as nonthreatening objects. There are more than 15,000 abandoned mine features in New Mexico. A considerable number of these mines have not been cataloged or assessed for prioritized reclamation efforts. These mine wastes can be examined as a resource of critical minerals. Many of legacy mine waste deposits have undiscovered commodities and critical minerals, due to low recovery processes during past production. In this project, Black Hawk mine wastes in Grant County, New Mexico are examined by thorough mineralogical and geochemical characterization. This project seeks to characterize and estimate the critical minerals in mine wastes of Black Hawk mine, and determine the acid generating potential of mine waste. Identifying and producing critical minerals in New Mexico may directly benefit the U.S economy and national security.

Underground instrumentation and observations at longwall panels have demonstrated that the growth of main roof causes an extremely high roof weighting on the shields. It can sometimes result in catastrophic effects on the support when the roof weighting intensity far exceeds the support capacity. In this paper, a comprehensive study was conducted on characteristics of main roof breakage and its effects on shields at different locations, based on the monitored shield data, theoretical analysis, and finite element analysis. With the help of theoretical analysis and numerical modeling, stress distribution and redistribution in the main roof were analyzed in detail to define main roof failure modes and understand the maximum roof weighting intensity imposed on the shields. From this study, it was found that the effects of main roof breakage on shields are chiefly related to the shield initial setting condition and the final failure mode of the main roof.

Following the recession of 2001, restrained consumer spending, declines in domestic manufacturing and industrial output, and increased unemployment led to a lack-luster year in the domestic economy. In 2002, the U.S. real gross domestic product (GPD) grew only 2.4%. Significant production declines in the U.S. metals industry were registered by copper, lead and zinc producers. Steel producers, despite a slight improvement in shipments, continued to face strong foreign competition, higher energy costs and lower prices for their products. Homebuilding and other domestic construction sectors— major consumers of nonmetallic mineral products such as cement, brick, glass and stone — remained strong enough to help raise the output of industrial mineral materials slightly above 2001 levels. A strong U.S. dollar relative to other national currencies continued to weaken the competitive stance of U.S. metal and non-metal mineral materials companies alike against foreign producers in markets at home and abroad.

The title of my paper, "A Company's Response to Federal Coal Leasing," brings to mind a picture of a dog chasing its tail. This is what the coal industry, has been doing since the Federal coal leasing moratorium went into effect in 1971. We've gone around in many circles, but we are only very slowly, if at all, getting closer to catching our tails, i.e., efficient, economical, and rational Federal coal leasing. My companies, The North American Coal Corporation and its four Subsidiaries, The Falkirk and Western Plains Mining Companies and The Coteau and Missouri Valley Properties Companies, together hold in excess of 4.5 billion tons of lignite reserves in North Dakota. Some of our North Dakota properties are substantially interspersed with Federal coal, with the government holding title to the minerals in every other section. This checkerboard pattern of Federal ownership has made it difficult to develop and market some of our reserves, and, as a result, it has become imperative that we be familiar with and active in the Federal Coal Leasing Program.

Concentrate flowrates have been measured for the flotation of -100 mesh Lower Kittaning coal in a computer controlled 0.076 m x 3.5 m pilot flotation column. The variables studied were recovery zone height), air flow rate, and solid feed concentration. The size distribution of concentrate and tailings samples were determined. The results obtained show that the concentrate flow rate was independent of collection zone height, but dependent on the gas flow rate, solid loading and particle size. New correlations for column carrying capacity and yield are provided as a function of these fundamental operational parameters.

Propelled by the invention of the transistor at Bell Laboratories, germanium's unique properties have advanced our electronic world by many years. Germanium has found major uses in infrared optics, fiber optics and a revised vigor as a catalyst for PET plastic production. Other advanced applications are in various stages of development. The solid state electronics industry has been the driving force behind the accelerating demand for gallium since the late sixties. Past developments of substrates for light emitting diodes, lasers and magnetic bubble memories are paling in view of the current excitement over the use of semi-insulating gallium arsenide for high performance integrated circuits. This application requires gallium metal and gallium compounds of extraordinary purity.

Five-element style deposits are unusual hydrothermal systems that are typically characterized by a nickel-cobalt-arsenic- silver-bismuth metal assemblage. This mineralization is often represented by abundant native silver, arsenic, or bismuth, and followed by nickel, cobalt, and iron arsenides (skutterudite, safflorite, nickeline, rammelsbergite, and lollingite). The Black Hawk district in Grant County, New Mexico is one of the few examples of this mineralization style in the United States. Despite the differences in formation temperature, depth of emplacement, and host rocks between five-element style deposits worldwide, there are commonalities in mineralogy, ore texture, and composition. A detailed exploration of the native metal and arsenide phases will be performed to compare ore forming fluids between systems and the effects on styles of mineralization and paragenesis, as well as to aid in broader classification of the deposit style. Mineralogy and mineral relationships of the Black Hawk District and other five-element deposits worldwide will be characterized by reflected light petrography, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and electron microprobe analysis. Mineralogical phase diagrams will be generated to better understand the driving processes and evolution of the systems through native metal and arsenide precipitation.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the roles of cement and concrete in construction in general and, more specifically, as construction materials of the Southeast. For purpose of this discussion, the Southeast will include the geographic area composed. of the following 13 states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and West Virginia. In one sense, cement by itself is not a construction material. It is a finely ground manufactured mineral product, usually gray in color. Cement is mixed with water and sand, gravel, crushed stone, or other aggregate to form concrete, the rock-like substance that is the most widely used construction material in the world. Because cement is seldom used by itself for construction but is usually a component of concrete, there is no such thing. as a "cement" sidewalk, a "cement" highway, or "cement" building. Neither is "portland" a brand name. It is a generic term used to describe any cement that hardens in the presence of water and is made to standard specifications .. For all practical construction purposes, therefore, all cement is "portland." The name "port-land" was selected by the English inventor of the product in 1824 because concrete made with his product resembled natural building stone quarried on Portland, an English island. Although portland cement is not the final material which finds its way into completed construction, as the principal component of the most widely used construction material in the world, the location and process of its manufacture warrant some discussion

Though Germany has a very old mining history, her experience in uranium mining only started in the late sixties. Today in the Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) there are only 5 small mines in the exploration stage, namely Menzenschwand and Müllenbach in the Black Forest and Mähring, Popenreuth and GroBschloppen in northern Bavaria. In all these exploration mines much development is required to define shape and size of ore bodies. Mining engineers, government authorities and environmentalists alike are very much concerned about environmental safeguards and protection of mine workers against radon and its daughter products. Miners are affected by internal and external radioactive exposure. In general the external [f3]- and [µ] -exposures can be considered as small in comparison to the internal exposure and are therefore not discussed in this paper. The internal exposure is caused by the inhalation of radon and its daughter products and is relevant to the lung as the critical organ. The nobelgas radon is inert and does not from compounds with other elements easily. Contrary to the physical half-life of 3,8 days the biological half-life of radon is only 10 to 20 minutes. During the rentention time in the body only approximately 1 % of the long-lived decay products are retained in the system (SCHOGER, 1976). In this connection is it important that the radon resorption as well as the radon secretion varies individually and depends to a large extent on the age of the person (SCHOGER, 1960). RENOUX et al. (1978) have determined that the greatest part of the a(-activity in the air is attached to aerosoles with a diameter of 0,4/14. The radiation exposure of the lung by radon is negligible if compared with the exposure by short-lived decay products. For this reason one has introduced the concept of the potential [o](-energy (P) of the short-lived radon decay products, which means the total [ct]-energy, which is produced when an atom decays in the decay-series down to the long-lived lead-210. [ ] The unity of the potential [o]-energy concentration in the SI-system is 1 j/m3 air. In radiation protection however a specific unit is used namely the working level (WL): [ ] The WL-unit, though internationally recognised has not been introduced officially in Germany. Because of the large amount of tunneling still to be done in the FRG, the various mines departments responsible for safety and health in mining ask searching questions such as: - What are the laws governing radon emanation in tunneling? - Can workers be adeguately protected against radiation hazards? - How should one drive through high grade uranium ore? - What happens if the ventilation system breaks down?

Dragados USA is constructing the LA Effluent Outfall Tunnel, a 7-mile, 18 ft internal diameter effluent discharge tunnel, utilizing a 21.6 ft (6.585 m) Herrenknecht Mixshield TBM. This paper highlights the means and methods used for TBM launch from a 55 ft diameter shaft excavated in wet with diaphragm wall support of excavation. This included SEM excavation of jet grout blocks for starter and tail tunnels, temporary concrete structures and steel installations, TBM sealing system, umbilical management for TBM hydraulic, electric and bentonite circuits as well as complex segment delivery logistics. The many launching challenges were overcome thanks to the innovative approaches from the project team.

Coal is the nation's most abundant fossil energy resource and serves as the primary fuel for the U.S. electric-power industry. However, its continued and expanded use is often challenged by the nature and amount of its associated impurities, such as mineral matter, sulfur, and trace elements. The moderate- to high-sulfur content of many U.S. coals is of particular concern today as potentially more stringent regulations requiring further reductions in sulfur dioxide emissions are being considered. The most prevalent method currently employed to control SO2 emissions from coal-burning facilities is post-combustion flue-gas desulfurization. However, physical coal cleaning (a.k.a. beneficiation, preparation) methods can also be effective in removing sulfur and ash impurities from coal prior to combustion. In a typical physical cleaning operation, raw coal is crushed to about 50-mm (2-inch) topsize, and then screened into coarse, intermediate, and fine size fractions. Crushing liberates some of the ash-forming minerals, including the portion of inorganic sulfur (pyritic) not chemically bound to the coal matrix. The percentage of impurities liberated generally increases as the coal particle size is reduced. Coarse- and intermediate-sized coal particles are typically subjected to specific gravity-based cleaning methods, while fine-sized (less than 0.5-mm) coal particles are beneficiated using froth flotation, a technique based on surface property differences. Greater cleaning potential exists at finer sizes because of increased liberation of impurities, but this potential is not fully realized because of inefficiencies associated with fine particle separation using state-of-the-art coal cleaning technologies.

Fine coal cleaning by froth flotation has become common practice in the U.S. with more than 80,000 tons treated in this way per day. In spite of this large tonnage, developments in the automatic control of coal flotation circuits have lagged significantly behind those for mineral systems. One reason such developments have been limited is that instruments have not been available for the on-line measurement of carbon or ash and another critical variables in coal slurries. A second reason is that the influence of the operating variables on coal flotation has not been completely understood. During the last few years some of the required instrumentation has been developed and an improved knowledge of the flotation process itself has occurred through mathematical modeling; as a result certain control strategies for coal flotation are beginning to emerge. This paper attempts to evaluate several control strategies using a detailed flotation dynamic simulator, DYNAFLOAT. After constructing a process matrix for the system of interest, promising alternatives for linking manipulated and controlled variables have been analyzed. In order to develop combined grade and recovery control strategies, the authors found it necessary to construct a grade/recovery map with the aid of the simulator to drive the system to known final, feasible grade/recovery operating conditions. Finally, an advanced strategy which uses an on-line model to identify disturbances and take control actions is proposed.

Some of the members will probably ask themselves what close relationship exists between hydro-metallurgy and a wet scrubber, but we are sure that as soon as deeper thought is given to the matter it will be realised how vital scrubbing, operations are in metallurgical plants. In ordinary metallurgical installations or pyro-metallurgical processes ore concentrates are first of all shifted from place to place and dust is created. In other cases the ores or concentrates are crushed or dried or roasted, and in each one of these operations dust and fumes, are created. All suspended particles and fumes originating from the abovementioned conditions not only, in many instances, provide health hazards which disrupt production and endanger the personnel in the plant, but also are the source of economic losses through extra maintenance and wear to moving machinery due to abrasion and corrosion. Further losses are incurred by the waste of fine, very often valuable, components. The Party who once said that in several metallurgical plants the bulk of the profits was discharged into the atmosphere by the stack wasn't stretching the truth. There is a place in Africa where a gold producing concern used to lose over 5 oz. of fine gold per day out of a total production of 3000 oz. per month. In another instance, copper concentrate going as high as 80% Cu was discharged into the atmosphere at the rate of 4 tons per day. Realising the value of removing and collecting solids and fumes created in metallurgical plants, a thorough study was made of the available plant and equipment offered on the market. Some units were found very efficient, but very expensive; some others also very efficient but with temperature and maintenance limitations. Some others were also efficient but prohibitive from the point of running costs.

Introduction The federal government's declining role in funding research has created a critical dollar gap for university departments of mining engineering. Industry, too, is affected by the drought. Research is lagging. Hardpressed universities are going to the private sector for funding. Mining companies should not shower universities with philanthropy, but a research partnership should be contracted on a pay-as-you-go basis. A model exists at The University of Alabama (albeit not in mining) that could be adopted by the mining industry. An equal partnership arrangement between a university and an industry for conducting research is proposed. The concept is not that a corporation sponsors and a university performs the research. Nor does it call for educational contributions or giveaways from industry. Rather, the corporation and the educational institution enter into a cooperative research endeavor, a full and equal partnership. Both parties contribute and both share the benefits. A key to the relationship is that it has a single objective: it must generate profits or reduce costs for the company. Working Model Recent literature is replete with examples of proposals for joint research endeavors, involving both contracts and grants, between industry and universities (Bronwell, 1971; Bugliarello, 1978; Branscomb, 1981; Sanford and Holland, 1982). They are all good proposals and offer something to both parties. They are, however, not widely supported. Few have received a favorable nod from the US mining industry. Though it may be logical, for example, to remake the American Mining Congress (or some new consortium) in the mold of umbrella-type industry organizations to fund cooperative research with mining institutions, such proposals have never flown. What model, then, will work? First, look for a model that has worked in industry in general. Second, seek to apply it to mining specifically. There is a model project that satisfies the first of those criteria. It is a project complicated by a third party, in addition to a corporation and a university. In January 1983, the "Factory of the Future Project" was initiated between The University of Alabama (UA) and General Motors Corp. (GM). The United Auto Workers (UAW) is a third party to the agreement. The factory was GM's Rochester Products Division manufacturing plant in Tuscaloosa, AL, also home of UA's main campus (Fig. 1). Saving a Plant The agreement came about at the initiative of GM and the UAW. Faced with having to close the plant because of excessive production costs, company and union officials proposed to the university that an applied research facility be established at the plant. The university would operate the laboratory, dedicated to $470,000 a year cost reductions for the company. The school would lease the 5.1 km2 (55,000 sq ft) space for $470,000 a year for three years. Any savings effected by the university's research effort would be credited toward to the rent. GM said the small factory, which made replacement carburetors

I am Alfred E. Michon, Vice President- International for Burlington Northern Inc. I work for BN's holding company and my responsibilities include co-ordinating the activities of our eight subsidiary companies as they relate to international commerce--an increasingly important aspect of the overall business of our company. Until last April, I was President of the Fort Worth and Denver and Colorado and Southern railroads, subsidiaries of BN. Prior to that, I headed the marketing and pricing area of BN's coal transportation business. Based on my experience in the energy industry, both domestic and international, I would like to discuss the world-wide trend towards the reliance on low-sulfur coal in lieu of natural gas and oil for the generation of electricity. Since pontification on the energy scene world- wide is best left to consultants with scenario-spitting computers, let me in- stead emphasize this trend through two examples. First I will describe the regulatory and economic factors which have encouraged the replacement of natural gas by low sulfur coal as a boiler fuel in the US. BN's investments in track and equipment were instrumental in this conversion. Secondly, I will show how this same combination of factors has created a large demand for steam coal in the Far East. Again, our company's strategy is to facilitate conversion to coal overseas through timely and sufficient investments.

INTRODUCTION It is a generally recognized obligation of owners and operators of underground mines in the United States to protect the health of miners against the potential carcinogenic effect of airborne alphaemitting radionuclides, in particular the shortlived radioactive daughter-products of 222Rn. In meeting this obligation, a number of strategies are available, and it is largely up to the operator to decide what combination of methods he will use. Because the officially accepted theory of the mechanism by which radon and its short-lived progeny cause cancer of the respiratory system, the objective in controlling this health hazard is to limit as far as possible the inhalation of the three daughter products, 218Po, 214Pb, and 214Bi. (214Po, the fourth nuclide in the chain, is so short-lived that its alpha-decay occurs almost instantaneously after the beta-decay of its parent, 214Bi.) The reasoning in this theory leads to the conclusion that the alphadecay of radon itself causes essentially negligible physiological damage, and that the amount of daughter product activity attributable to decay of radon within the respiratory system is also very small. As every ventilation engineer in this business knows, however, focusing remedial actions exclusively on the daughter products themselves is choosing the hard way, and will probably never lead to effective control of this health hazard in underground mining activities. The reason for this troublesome fact can be seen in Figure 1. Let us say that we have air containing 222Rn and its short-lived daughters in near-equilibrium, a not-uncommon condition in the air of a poorly ventilated underground mine, and that we wish to purify it by removing only the toxic daughter products. If we have been very thorough in our purification efforts, we might expect to achieve a 99% reduction of the Working Level (WL) measurement. Figure 2 allows us to examine closely the early regrowth of WL's in this freshly cleaned air. Within the first five minutes, for instance, the WL's are back to 10% of their full equilibrium value, and ten minutes later the level has more than doubled and is on its way to an almost complete defeat of the clean-up effort by the end of the next hour. It is quite clear from this simple illustration that no matter how effective an air-cleaning system may be if it is directed only at the selective removal of the toxic trio, 218Po, 214Pb and 214Bi, its beneficial effect will be quite temporary. A truly effective attack on the problem must always include methods aimed at the control of the unruly parent, radon. Then, even if its progeny have an inalienable "right to life", their brief lives will not be spent in the miners' lungs. Longwall mining appears very attractive from an engineering standpoint because of its simplicity. The use of one long, continuous face can simplify power distribution, ventilation, and supervision, and minimizes or prevents lost time associated with the tramming of equipment in room-and-pillar systems. Since the longwall system is more amenable to automation, it is inherently safer than room and pillar. Remote control of all face equipment from gate roads will obviate the exposure of men in the face area. Considering what has been said, it seems a paradox that more longwall installations are not found in the United States. However, with favorable mining conditions in relatively level seams of adequate height under shallow cover, it has been possible to develop highly productive, mechanized, room-and-pillar systems. Thus there has been no real incentive to employ longwall in the United States. In Europe, mining companies usually have very little choice between the two systems. Pitching seams of low height located at great depth dictate the use of longwall methods. With depletion of its readily accessible reserves, mining conditions will be similar to those now prevailing in Europe, and an increase in the use of longwall in the United States can be anticipated.
