Phosphorus may be incorporated into sedimentary rocks in at least four different ways: (1) by the accumulation of detrital mineral fragments, (2) by the accumulation of phosphatic organic debris, (3) by diagenesis and (4) perhaps by the primary precipitation of calcium phosphate. Based-on the petrographic examination of Cretaceous and Tertiary sediments from the northern and central parts of the Atlantic Coastal Plain, Diagenesis is the most important of these mechanisms. Both syndiagenesis and epidiagenesis are required to explain the origin of all the diagenetic phosphate mineral species which occur in the northern and central parts of the coastal plain. Syndiagenesis produced much of the coastal plain's apatite. It was operative below the sediment-water interface while the substrate was being compacted. Compaction forced pore waters, which were enriched in phosphate by the decomposition of organic matter, upward through calcareous sediments. The PO43- radicle replaced the CO23- and calcareous nodules, pellets and shell fragments were converted to apatite. Epidiagenetic reactions occurred in the subaerial environment where downward percolating meteoric waters carried phosphate in solution to cites where cation activity was sufficiently high to form new minerals. Vivianite may form where ferrous iron is available and wavellite and variscite may form in the presence of aluminum rich minerals. Textural evidence suggests that many of the reactions were repeated. The present day appearance of apatite, vivianite, wavellite and variscite in the coastal plain may represent several generations of diagenesis.

Before the first shovelful of dirt is removed from a developing mining property, a wide range of data must be collected, organized and analyzed. Among the key steps in this process are: • Visualization of the deposit from drill hole data and geologic interpretation, using all available information, including surface geology, geochemistry and geophysics. • Drawing of vertical and horizontal sections. • Construction of a 3D solid model of the deposit. • Contouring of deposit outlines and geological structure until the model represents best estimate of reality. • Estimation of grade and quality distribution. • Calculation of reserves. • Examination of possible mining methods. • Determination of economic feasibility. Many techniques are available to aid in this process of mine project feasibility analysis, from quick pencil calculations to sophisticated computer methods. However, time races faster in the complex modem business world than it did 50 years ago. Tried and true pencil methods take too much time. Opportunity may pass a mine developer by while a property is still in the first stages of analysis. In the days of hand techniques, initial analysis of the economic feasibility of a mining project usually stopped with reserve calculations and broad mine planning. Further planning was not done or was done only for the short term. Manual techniques require too much time and manpower to evaluate a longterm mining program. Mining-industry recognition of computer utility has increased. Most companies now use computers in technical applications and could not conceive of working without them. Building initial computer models of a deposit may take nearly as long as hand techniques. But the payback comes when changes are needed and a variety of mine plans are quickly tested.

"When designing segmental lining at a cross passage, modern solutions try to bear the loads transferred around the opening within the rings by using shear elements in the ring joints. Commonly used shear systems providing coupling are cam & pocket, shear keys, bicones and steel dowels. These solutions have advantages and disadvantages, but most importantly they have limits in their capacity to stabilize the lining at cross passages. With the help of 3D-FE-analyses for an opening of one segmental ring these different solutions are compared taking various ground conditions into account. As a result the capacity of the individual system is determined. Notice is made regarding the applicability of the system as well as the consequences for the design and the verification. INTRODUCTION The design of the lining at a cross passage is among the most difficult tasks when designing TBM-tunnels. At one time the bedding of the lining disappears due to the excavation behind the lining, at another the ring-structure is interrupted when parts of the lining are removed for the opening. The trick is to transfer the loads around the opening into other segments and to areas of the lining which are still supported by the ground. In the rings immediately at the cross passage this creates a distribution of forces within the segments that strongly deviates from that of the regular lining. The design needs to consider the boundary conditions of the respectively chosen solution for stiffening of the opening and its peculiarities in the modeling as well as in the verifications. In the past segments of steel or an internal strutting of steel (DAUB 2013) placed around the later openings were commonly used, see Figure 1. The application of a strutting from the outside to the rings is restricted to such circumstances when for example a connection from a shaft to the tunnel can be made in suitable ground conditions (Ring and Glomp 2012). Though steel segments provide a robust solution, they are expensive due to their laborious manufacture, the high proportion of construction steel required and the time consuming installation in the tunnel (Häfliger 2013). A strutting of steel requires extensive design and verification. The resulting structure usually weighs several tons and must be erected as well as demounted within the confined space of the tunnel, requiring suitable transport and assembly equipment. The cross section remains restricted, thus causing a bottleneck for TBM operations and hindering the works and installations for the cross passage works."

The mining industry's image is molded by what the general public knows, or thinks they know about mining. As we prepared for the production of Caterpillar's educational film, Common Ground, we first had to find out exactly what the public perceptions about mining were. Before we could educate people about mining, we had to find out what they already thought. As we broke down those perceptions, we were able to narrow our focus to relevant, realistic approaches for the film. We found out what people didn't know about mining. And most importantly, we singled out the facts they should know... facts that could create more favorable attitudes. This research was instrumental in our final direction for the Common Ground project.

Longwall mining is the most productive method of under- ground coal mining in the United States (US.), and record levels of production have been reached in recent years. These ever-improving production levels have the potential to generate significantly higher quantities of respirable dust. Consequently, the longwall industry continues to struggle with controlling dust liberation and maintaining compliance with the federally-mandated respirable dust standard. In response, longwall operators have in- creased the application of primary dust controls, airflow and water flow, in an effort to improve respirable dust control and reduce worker exposure. Pittsburgh Research Center (PRC) personnel conducted dust surveys at 13 longwalls operating throughout the U.S. and collected information to: identify current operating practices on these longwalls, identify the types of dust controls in use, document the levels at which these controls are being applied, and measure the respirable dust levels present. This data was analyzed to quantify the dust levels generated by the major sources on the longwall section and to evaluate the relative effectiveness of the control technologies in use.

Large-scale equipment can reduce both capital and operating costs for concentrators. Large semiautogemus (SAG) mills can be effectively utilized in big mills but they must be kept fully loaded to tab advantage of their great potential. With varying hardness ores, controlling throughput is difficult and careful design must take this into consideration. A variable speed drive on large primary semiautogemus mills can overcome this problem to a considerable degree. This paper provides a base case using standard accepted technology of two wound rotor single speed 4476 kW (6000 hp) motors to drive the primary SAG mills of a hypothetical 36,364 t/d (40,000 stpd) typical porphyry copper mill. One other fixed speed drive will be described and jive variable speed drive configurations will be reviewed. Capital costs for the entire grinding circuit, from crusher product to flotation feed, were developed for the base case and each of the alternatives. A technical evaluation comparing the advantages and disadvantages of each drive is presented.

Continuous thickeners can be sized either from previous experience, continuous pilot-scale test results, or from batch settling tests. Although it is a relatively simple process to size full-scale thickeners when previous experience or pilot-scale operating data are available, batch testing is often the only realistic method for sizing thickeners due to time restrictions, budget limitations and availability of sample material. Many authors have, therefore, suggested means of running batch tests and analyzing the resulting data. Fundamental thickening theory had its beginning with the work o£ Coe and Clevenger(1). In order to determine the size of the thickener settling area, they proposed that a series of batch settling tests be run at various initial concentrations. The solids handling capacity at each concentration can then be determined and the lowest capacity (maximum area requirements) used to size the thickener. Kynch(2) developed a mathematical analysis in which the relationship between solids concentration and settling rate can be obtained from a single batch settling curve. Talmage and Fitch(3), Yoshioka(4)(5) and Dick(6), have enlarged upon these works to give a basis for methods of sizing thickeners.

One of the most difficult tasks associated with placer mining is the sampling of the deposit. More placer projects have failed due to inaccurate assessment of the reserves than to any other reason. Within the realm of placers, those containing valuable minerals with a high unit value are more difficult to sample than those with larger bulk, lower unit value minerals. Some items to consider when sampling a placer deposit are as follows: A. A relatively large sample is needed for accurate valuation of the ground being tested. Placers are composed of many sizes of gravel which makes a representative sample difficult to obtain. B. When sampling placers for high unit value minerals such as gold, any error in mineral content of the sample will be magnified in the calculation of reserves. C. Values are usually erratically distributed within the gravel mass. Therefore, some placers with a more uniform value distribution may be adequately assessed with a minimum number of samples whereas a deposit with a highly erratic distribution of values may not be adequately sampled regardless of how many samples are taken. D. The investigation of a placer deposit should be made by, or be under the direction of, a person experienced in the art of placer sampling. F) During a sampling program, items that must be observed and noted in addition to the sample size and valuable mineral content should include boulder size and number, clay content, bedrock conditions, water, frozen ground, false bedrock, and any other physical characteristics that would affect mining of the deposit.

Introduction Evidence from blast furnace operations has indicated that using pellets with a higher ISO low temperature reducibility, a lower SiO2 content, and better resistance to low temperature degradation results in considerable coke savings and improved furnace operation. Although these benefits could not be directly related to reducibility differences alone, we believed there was sufficient evidence of the advantages in improved pellet reducibility to warrant laboratory investigation of ways and means to effect such improvements. It is well known that pellet reducibility can be significantly altered by changes in the basicity and the amount of non-iron oxide constituents. Past work (Friel and Erickson, 1980, 1982; Saeki et al., 1977; Thanning, 1974) has shown that with increased MgO contents, and at optimum CaO/S1O2 ratios, significant improvement in low temperature reducibility can be attained. The improved properties of such fluxed pellets have reportedly led to increased blast furnace efficiency and productivity (Saeki et al., 1977; Ilmoni, 1975). Less well known, however, is exactly what factors control reducibility in acid pellets. Because of this gap in knowledge, studies were undertaken of the factors affecting reducibility in acid pellets and to estimate their relative significances in modifying reduction behavior. This paper describes that part of our work done to determine the effect of bentonite on reduction behavior. Our approach was to first examine the effect of bentonite's presence on as pure an iron oxide as possible (i.e., a magnetite "superconcentrate" containing about 0.2% SiO2) so as to eliminate any gangue-binder interaction. The next step was to look at bentonite effects on concentrates with only limited amounts of gangue (containing about 1% SiO2), but of two different types, simple and complex silicates. Last, we

The choice of a method may depend upon the manner in which the information is to be used, for example, in development of new processes, plant and process design, plant control, problem solving, etc.

Sustainable development is a principle for the way we should act in the present. It ensures also options for the future to achieve a balance between social, economic and ecology development. The efficiency of raw material utilisation is being enhanced through technological developments, starting from extraction through all the following stages of the value creation chain. The use of domestically produced resources helps to assure the technological know-how. Additional indicators being collected and published by individual companies are questionable in countries with a tightly regulated legal framework such as in Germany, but make sense in developing and threshold countries. Sustainability in terms of efficient use of raw materials will manifest itself at the next stages of the value creation chain. Examples for efficiency improvement can be found in the steel, the power generation and agriculture industries. The approval procedures for German mining operations entail an internationally extremely strict assessment of the potential impact on the environment. All the mining activities include remediation and recultivation where the practise in Germany has become model character by international levels.

"Civil design has changed in many ways using BIM (Building Information Modelling) technology in its most recent form. Such a technological breakthrough has not been successful so far in traditional oriented Engineering Geology, except in the Mining and oil exploration markets with budgets on much different scales. The fact is that paper, pencil and hand drawn sketches are still state of the art and a perfectly acceptable way of producing subjective geological interpretations.Using the technology available, we have developed a set of procedures and techniques to combine the latest surveying and remote sensing technology, GIS based tools to manage large data sets and BIM modelling techniques in a 3D geological environment.To demonstrate the concept, the forthcoming Karavanke tunnel project (Slovenia) has been chosen for testing techniques. The project, with its rich documentation from previous phases and new data available, represented a good basis for testing the possibility of digitizing geological data while communicating with Leapfrog Geo 3D modelling algorithms. This type of procedure would then allow engineers at the construction site to use the 3D model for prognosis and evaluation, while upgrading it daily with new information.INTRODUCTIONThe Karavanke tunnel crosses the mountain range on the border between Slovenia and Austria. As the geology is very complex due to its imbricate fan structure, a series of geological – geotechnical and hydrogeological investigations have been performed since the 1970s, resulting in extensive project documentation. The construction of the 7864 m long single-tube two-lane tunnel took place in the late 1980s. Currently, the tunnel represents a critical point on Pan-European Transport Corridor X (Salzburg, Austria – Thessaloniki, Greece), with insufficient safety measures. The need for improved traffic flow and enhanced road safety led the Slovenian government in 2013 to a decision to continue with activities regarding the construction of the second tunnel tube 70 m east of the existing tunnel.The extensive project documentation from previous investigation phases and construction of a new tunnel tube presented a good base for a pilot project, in order to test the emerging new technologies for data acquisition, processing and analysis in a 3D environment. Several products are available on the market for data acquisition and 3D geological modelling, but only a few can be applied in the civil design, as well. Developing a standard format and procedure for implementing the 3D geological model using new remote sensing techniques, 3D geological modelling tools, such as Leapfrog Geo and BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling techniques would move the Engineering Geology, Geotechnics and Tunneling to a more advanced level. 3D modelling tools would therefore not only be used as a visualization tool, but would also contribute to in a more efficient communication and workflow between the professionals involved in the project."

The Henderson molybdenum mine, near Empire, CO, has operated since 1976 using a panel caving process and a rail haulage transportation system. After two decades of service, the rail haulage system required a substantial capital expenditure to improve operations. The timing for this worked well because Henderson was able to combine this capital need into a mine plan that addressed process bottlenecks and current mining practices as a new production level was designed and developed. This process was a logical step, following an equipment upgrade program, and became known as the Henderson 2000 project. One of the key components of Henderson 2000 is a new ore transportation system. Throughout Henderson's life, the bottleneck has been the rail haulage system. Henderson staff evaluated several transportation alternatives and decided on a truck haulage configuration feeding an underground crusher and conveyor system. This configuration will eliminate the haulage bottleneck and will allow the mine to increase capacity. The installation of this system will be completed by the year 2000. The second key component of Henderson 2000 is the development of a new 7175 production level to extract the lower reserves of the ore body. Henderson staff benchmarked other caving operations and compared their mining practices to Henderson's basic mining guidelines. It became apparent that Henderson's practices could become more efficient, particularly in the areas of drawpoint spacing and column heights. These concepts were incorporated into the layouts

Introduction The performance of seals in boreholes, shafts and tunnels is an important concern in mine safety, in the control of effluents from operating and abandoned mines and in the underground containment of hazardous wastes (Einarson and Abel, 1990; Mining Waste Study, 1988). Despite the clear need for effective seals, few documented test results are available concerning the performance of in situ seals. Some evidence indicates that horizontal or near-horizontal holes are especially difficult to seal properly (Kelsall et al., 1982). This research involved the installation, extensive hydraulic testing, removal and post-test examination of a 10-cm-long x 10-cm-diam cement grout seal in a near-horizontal borehole in limestone. The work was performed in an underground mine on Marble Peak in the Santa Catalina Mountains, AZ. A test hole was diamond cored in the recrystallized limestone of the Escabrosa formation. The hole is 33.24 m long, 10 cm in diam, and dips at 10.4°. The hole extends between two drifts and thus is accessible from both ends. Seal installation Surveys to assist in selecting the interval to seal consisted of core logging, video logging and constant-head injection tests using a straddle-packer unit. The location selected, 3 m from the lower end of the hole, had low hydraulic conductivity (3 x 10-10 to 3 x 10-9 cm/sec) and was free of significant fractures. The grout used, an expansive Class A cement, was provided by Dowell-Schlumberger, Tulsa, OK. A grout mass about 1.5 m in length was installed, with a dump bailer, above a temporary mechanical plug. Groundwater in the hole, if any, was minimal during placement. After 13 days of curing, the grout mass was partially drilled out from both ends, leaving a seal 10 cm long. Water distribution in rock mass The distribution of water and fluid pressure in the rock mass near the seal appears to be complex. The generally dry condition of the borehole and rock mass suggests that the rock mass near the seal was unsaturated prior to the injection tests of this research. The injection tests presumably created an expanding saturated zone around the seal. However, anomalously high fluid pressures, consistently recorded by one of two piezometers installed near the seal, suggest connection to a source of significant natural hydraulic head. Comparable head variations for closely spaced piezometers have been reported by others (Sowers, 1976). [ ] Seal testing The seal was tested for 3.5 years, using steady constant-head, tracer travel-time, dye-injection, head-buildup and transient constant-head tests. These tests are fully described in Greer and Daemen, 1991. In the head-buildup test, transient flow occurs through the seal (and rock mass) to a closed, water-filled interval of the borehole adjacent to the seal. The test consists of monitoring the rise in head in the closed interval until steady conditions are approached. The test may be analyzed in terms of a one dimensional analytical model to obtain the effective hydraulic conductivity (Ks) and specific storage (Sss) of the seal. Analysis in terms of an axisymmetric three-dimensional numerical model may yield properties of both the seal and rock mass.

The Kidston gold discoveries were originally made about 1907, and by 1934, 1.76 Mg (62,000 oz) of gold had been produced from placer and lode mining of higher grade, most¬ly oxidized gold ore. As mining in the lode ore penetrated deeper, costs increased and the world gold price stagnated. The lode or underground production averaged close to 6.9 g/t (0.2 oz per ton) Au for the 201 kt mined. No mining or development took place from 1934 until 1965. Kidston's high grade ores were exhausted by 1934. From 1965 to 1976, exploration had developed 3 Mt of about 3 g/t (0.88 oz per ton) Au. Placer Pacific acquired rights to the property in 1976 and began a geologic and engineering study of the district. It was clear that the deposit had the potential for becom¬ing a large-tonnage, low-grade producer. However, explora¬tion had to discover the tonnage and grade and engineering needed to solve the obstacles of production costs. Bulk material handling problems were addressed by Placer's wide experience in open pit mining, and the increase in work index accompanying deeper ores was handled by Placer's metallurgists. The matter of power for the operation was solved by engineering studies. These showed that power could be generated and brought in economically. The price of gold also increased after 1976, and this helped in the economic analysis. The Kidston discovery since 1976 is really a combination of good exploration geology and careful engineering plan¬ning that overcame the obstacles presented by ore characteris¬tics and the location of the deposit. Introduction One important class of manganiferrous ores is manganiferrous-silver ores. They occur in the oxidized portions of the silver deposits of the western United States. Silver is often associated with manganese oxides, which in some ore deposits are dispersed through calcite, causing the black color of the host rock, known as black calcite. Black calcites can occur in carbonate rocks (0.3 to 50 kg Ag/t) and in volcanic rocks (less than 30 g Ag/t). Silver mineralization associated with manganese oxides and black calcites can occur in veins (Hewett, 1968) or as disseminations (Graybeal, 1981). In the US, silver-bearing manganese veins are located in a broad arc that extends from southern Colorado to southwest New Mexico, southern Arizona, and southeast Califor¬nia (Hewett, 1964). Areas of disseminated silver-manganese mineralization include the Creede and Silver Cliff districts of Colorado and the Tombstone and Hardshell districts of Arizona (Graybeal, 1981). These deposits are also characterized by significant amounts of silver halides - cerargyrite (AgCl), bromargyrite (AgBr), and iodargyrite (AgI). Black calcites are also common in these deposits. Oxidized silver ores containing the higher oxides of manganese are generally refractory to hydrometallurgical methods of treatment. In the past when these ores could not be smelted, they were treated generally by cyanidation at very low efficiency. The US Bureau of Mines (USBM) studied the problem of treating silver-manganese ores in the early 1920s (Clevenger and Caron, 1925). It was found that the refractory silver in the original ore was insoluble in all the common solvents for metallic silver and its salts. The conclusion was that to obtain the highest recovery of silver, all the manganese had to be dissolved or the higher oxides of manganese reduced to manganous oxide. More recent results from treating refractory silver¬manganese ores were given by USBM (Scheiner et al., 1973). The silver ores from Candeleria District, NV, and Round Mountain District, CO, were investigated. Electrooxidation experiments recovered only 34% silver with minor amounts of manganese dissolved. Sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation revealed that silver extracted was proportional to the amount of SO2 used. A similar approach, using sulfurous acid pretreatment followed by cyanidation, was also proposed by Rhoades et al. (1984). Hazen Research Inc. performed extensive testing on silver and manganese dissolutions from Ag-Mn ores obtained from the Candeleria and Round Mountain ore deposits. The methods examined were direct cyanidation, pretreatment with sulfurous acid followed by cyanidation, malonitrile leach, and leaching with ammonium hydroxide-sodium thiosulfate under slight oxygen pressure. The results were not satisfactory. The importance of the vast reserves of Ag-Mn ores and the lack of an efficient method to recover these metals warranted a search for new technologies. One novel method for extraction of these metals is treatment of Ag-Mn ores with acidified thiourea solutions. Preliminary results of the leaching of silver and manganese from Ag-Mn ores were very encouraging (Pesic, 1984a) ; thus, it was decided to examine the new lixiviant in more detail. Experimental Ore from the Round Mountain District was studied. It was crushed, ground, and dry sieved into monosized fractions in the range of 16 to +400 mesh. The ore composition was about 90 g Ag/t and 3% Mn, depending slightly on size. The leaching experiments were performed in apparatus described elsewhere (Pesic, 1982 and 1984b). All experiments were performed at constant temperature conditions. The leaching residues were analyzed for silver and manganese. Introduction The separation of minerals from complex sulfide ores by flotation requires careful control of the surface chemical behaviors of the minerals constituting the ores. When the minerals in the ore are finely disseminated, extremely fine grinding is needed to liberate the minerals. Fine grinding is not only an energy-intensive operation, but also influences the flotation behaviors of liberated minerals. Steel balls are commonly used for grinding. Galvanic interactions occur not only between sulfide minerals and grinding media but also among the different sulfide minerals themselves. The electrochemical characteristics of chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite when they are independently coupled with steel grinding media and the relevance of these characteristics to the flotation behavior of these minerals have been exten¬sively studied (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992: Li and Iwasaki, 1992). These studies dealt with reactions in two electrode combinations, simulating mineral-grinding medium and mineral-mineral interactions. In practice, however, it is more common to involve more than one sulfide mineral. In a study of a pyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system, Pozzo et al. (1989) provided evidence that a mineral having an intermediate potential could behave differently, depending on the condi¬tion of galvanic contact. This investigation was undertaken to study a chalcopyrite-pyrrhotite-mild steel system to gain better in¬sight into the mechanism of multiple galvanic interactions. A three-electrode system was chosen to simulate a typical copper sulfide ore. The sulfide minerals were represented by chalcopyrite and pyrrhotite. The grinding medium was rep¬resented by mild steel. The nature of galvanic interactions involving these minerals and grinding medium in an oxygen atmosphere was investigated in a three-electrode combina¬tion, and an attempt was made to relate the laboratory flotation results of pyrrhotite-chalcopyrite ores. Possible implications to the differential flotation of complex sulfide ores are discussed. Key words: Electrochemistry, Flotation, Sulfide ores Experimental The pyrrhotite (57.74% Fe, 0.09% Cu, 4.84% Ni and 36.54% S) sample was obtained from Falconbridge Ltd.'s Strathcona mine, Ontario, Canada, and the chalcopyrite (26.00% Cu, 28.57% Fe, 0.05% Ni and 31.52% S) sample came from Transvaal, South Africa. Mild steel (AISI 1020, 0.2% C) was chosen to represent grinding media. A conventional three-electrode cell was used in the elec¬trochemical measurements. The working, counter and refer¬ence electrodes were, respectively, sulfide minerals or mild steel, graphite rod and saturated calomel electrode (SCE, 0.245 V vs. standard hydrogen electrode). The exposed areas of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium electrodes were approximately the same (0.17 to 0.19 cm2). The preparation methods of working electrodes, the reagents used, the experi¬mental procedures and the instrumentation were the same as those described previously (Cheng and Iwasaki, 1992). Rest potentials of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and mild steel were measured individually in 0.05-M sodium sulfate solu¬tions. Combination potentials and galvanic currents of the sulfide minerals and grinding medium were measured in short-circuited two- and three-electrode systems. All poten¬tials in this study are quoted in volts with respect to the standard hydrogen electrode (SHE). The concern for air pollution goes back centuries as will be seen from this quotation : "Strife and coal, it seems, have a hand-in-hand historical relationship. It was thought by some . . . in the Middle Ages that burning coal filled the air with dangerous poisons. So great was the concern that in 1306 King Edward I of England passed the first and unquestionably the harshest air pollution legislation edict that history will record. His proclamation declared the use of coal an act punishable by death." As related to coal mining, the air pollution problem is primarily that of its customer when using the fuel. Thus the major impact relates to markets for coal rather than the actual mining operation itself. In the vicinity of the coal mine the problem is principally related to fugitive dust from roads, transfer facilities, loading facilities, crushers, etc., and particulate matter (dust or fly ash) from thermal dryers and air cleaning tables.

INTRODUCTION Mineral commodities are normally separated into three generic classes-metals, nonmetals, and energy minerals including oil and gas as well as the solid fuels. Metals, the focus of this chapter, encompass a large number of different substances. The U.S. Bureau of Mines, for in- stance, has commodity specialists following trends in over 40 metal products of importance to the country's economy and well being. Ranging from aluminum to zirconium, the metals display an incredible degree of diversity. Some such as lead are heavy, others such as magnesium are light. Some such as copper are good conductors of electricity. Others such as silicon are semiconductors. Mercury is found in liquid form, while some metals melt only when heated to extremely high temperatures. Iron and steel, aluminum, and copper are consumed in particularly large tonnages in a multitude of end uses, while many minor metals are needed in only small amounts in a few highly specialized applications. The use of some metals can be traced back into history for millennia, indeed back to the bronze and iron ages, while the commercial consumption of aluminum and other newer metals is less than a hundred years old. Some metals are extracted from large open pits, others are dug out of deep underground mines, and still others are processed from the sea. Mining and processing can be relatively uncomplicated and inexpensive, though in most instances highly sophisticated technology is necessary and the costs are high. Some metals are produced mainly as byproducts of other metals. Some are recovered in large quantities from the scrap of obsolete equipment and demolished buildings. Some are mined in only a few locations and traded worldwide, others are produced in many different countries. Some are sold by numerous firms at fluctuating prices determined on competitive commodity exchanges, others are produced by only a handful of firms and sold at stable producer-prices. This diversity makes the metals interesting, indeed fascinating, to study. Yet, it also poses problems, for each metal in its own way is unique. There is no general model or economic analysis applicable to all metals. Rather each must be considered individually, so that the analysis or model takes explicit account of its particular features. This means that a single chapter cannot begin to cover comprehensively the economics of all metals, and no attempt to do so is made here. Instead, we will concentrate on illustrating the usefulness of relatively simple economic principles, particularly those associated with supply and demand analysis, in understanding the behavior of metal markets. The next section begins by exploring the nature of metal demand. It is followed by an investigation of metal supply- from individual product production, from by- product and coproduct production, and from secondary production. The final section then illustrates the usefulness of the concepts introduced in earlier sections by using them to analyze

With the opening of the Tilden mine near Ishpeming, MI, a new era in iron ore beneficiation was begun. A description of a U. S. Bureau of Mines investigation is summarized to illustrate the selective flocculation-deslime-flotation process developed by the Bureau and used at the Tilden concentrator, which is also briefly described. The operating parameters for the selective flocculation-cationic flotation of an oxidized taconite from the Mesabi range are discussed. A water reclamation system using lime and a cationic flocculant was applied to reclaim the effluents from a 900-pound-per-hour flotation pilot plant. About 80 percent of water requirements were recovered, and the calcium content of the reclaimed water was found to be more important than clarity in influencing the selective flocculation and flotation processes. Although reclaimed waters with about 10 ppm calcium registered turbidities of approximately 5,000 ppm SiO2 equivalents, the concentrates produced using these waters contained 64 percent Fe and =5.0 percent SiO2 and had accompanying iron recoveries of 75 percent. Lower grade concentrates resulted from using reclaimed water with higher calcium contents and lower turbidities.
