"In Antioquia region of Colombia – South America most of extractive activity is developed as artisanal and small-scale level, exploiting different types of minerals resources but predominantly gold. This is not only an ancestral livelihood of hundreds of families in this region, but also their unique way of subsistence. However, that situation has not had a positive effect in the sustainable development of this territory because of several unsustainability factors mainly related to mercury use for gold extraction, the incorrect management of tailings and the informal way in which miners perform their activity. In 2010 Antioquia was the place with the highest contamination by mercury in the world with serious effects in ecosystems and health of habitants of this region (Veiga 2010) This paper presents a Socio-Technical Model focused on strengthening capabilities and social capital of artisanal and small-scale miners and its surrounding communities in Antioquia region. This is based on processes of evaluation, design and implementation of appropriate technologies to obtain “clean minerals” without using mercury and with a right management of tailings. In gold extraction it is about gravitational methods of concentration, which take advantage of high density of this element. These methods not only are cleaner but more profitable for miners. Notwithstanding its technical origins, the current model proposes a holistic framework that manages the elimination of mercury in mining not only as a technology transfer matter. Thus, more than formalization the strengthening process seeks to promote a business vision in miners and to develop productive chains in surrounding communities, this means to improve the skills of artisanal and small-scale miners to organize in a corporative way and to help surrounding communities to provide support and supply services to mining and even to other companies. Besides, the articulation with local institutions drives to reinforce their functions of control and accompaniment. In shorthand, this effort aims to empower local institutions, miners and surrounding communities in such a way they are able to face together their own development challenges in a sustainable way."

A mathematical model is presented which allows the free or hindered settling velocity to he calculated for any size or- shape particle in any fluid, and at any percent solids up to the maximum. The validity of the model is supported by comparing calculated velocities (or viscosities) with measured values for 1073 data points contained in 80 sets of data encompassing a range of Reynolds’ numbers, from 0.002 to 770.000. The average error was 0.69%, with an average standard deviation of 6.65%. The derivation of the model is too lengthy to include in this paper, which will specifically present the application of the model to the free settling of minerals and spheres, prediction of the friction factor in wind tunnel tests, the viscosity of suspensions of spheres, the hindered settling of mono-sized spheres and closely sized minerals, and the settling of large spheres in suspensions of small spheres.

There is no known, practical substitute for lead in the automobiles, communications systems, medical equipment and computers that Americans use every day. However, there are many who say lead should be stopped at its source -- banned. As America's largest lead producer, The Doe Run Company has ralized that it must do more than mine and reclaim lead efficiently and safely. It must also earn the public's consent to operate if it is to continue to be a viable business. LEAD - THE BRILLIANT PERFORMER: REFURBISHING AN IMAGE It's been an embarrassingly long time since I was a college student. However, I remember there was no course at the University of Missouri's School of Mines and Metallurgy that had anything to do with the public relations aspects of mining or, put another way, the politicization of mining. I haven’t perused the course catalog for Penn State’s College of Earth and Minerals Sciences. But I strongly suspect I wouldn’t find such a course there today, either. A statement by the chairman of one of the country’s largest chemical companies leads to the point I want to make. He described his business this way. He said, “We’re a public affairs company that just happens to produce and market chemicals.” Like chemicals, minerals and mining are politicized today. To the extent that we don’t understand that reality, we don’t understand that reality – and act on it – we’re less likely to survive in this business. Some of you may well be saying to yourselves, “This guy Zelms is an alarmist.” That’s fair enough. Because it is absolutely true that there’s n o known, practical substitute for lead today. And it’s also absolutely true that, knowingly or not, Americans use lead everyday. It’s in our automobile batteries. It’s an integral part of communications systems. High tech (and low tech) medical equipment contains lead. And lead is an essential component of computer and TV screens. But even with all these uses, lead has a negative image today. An image so negative that its very existence is threatened. If you doubt that, consider these two statements made in 1989. Statement one. “It is probably reasonable to argue that exposure is the single most important and critical environmental health problem in the U.S., and possibly also the world…” Statement number two. “Many of the uses of lead should be terminated. We need to go back to the ultimate source: that is, taking lead out of the ground and putting it into the product stream and we need to turn it off at the ultimate source. Not the approximate lead in gasoline, or lead in air, or lead in food. Go right back to the source and start cranking it down." (End quote.) Those are what I call strong statements. And they weren’t made by some celebrity spokesperson for the environment like Meryl Streep. Both these statements were made by Dr. Ellen Silbergeld, whose long list of professional and academic credentials includes: o Adjunct professor and research scientist at the University of Maryland Medical School and Johns Hopkins: o Chief toxic scientist and director of the Toxic Chemicals Program of the Environmental Defense fund; o and President of the Society for Occupational and Environmental Health. If Dr. Silbergeld were the only person making these kinds of statements, it would be one thing. But she’s not a voice in the wilderness, by any means. Also for those of you who say, well since there’s no known substitute for lead, how on earth could it be banned. I refer you to a number of bills before Congress that would permit the EPA to ban any product if it is determined that its

Through the use of good preventive maintenance procedures in which the work of both production and maintenance personnel is well-coordinated, production downtime can be drastically minimized, and costly repairs and interruptions in planned maintenance and production schedules can be eliminated. There had been some conflict in the past between production and maintenance people over the proper method of achieving maximum machine performance. The usual practice was to operate production equipment at maximum capacity for the longest possible time until breakdown occurred, and then make hurried repairs to get back into production. In most cases, these repairs involved unscheduled work and were thus performed inefficiently. Both production and maintenance have the same objective: to produce a quality product at maximum efficiency and at minimum cost. Preventive maintenance is a common tool available for both production and maintenance personnel to achieve this objective. Actually, one of the main objectives of preventive maintenance is to find any abnormal machine condition that may cause machine failure before a breakdown occurs. This makes it possible to plan and schedule maintenance work with the least amount of interruption and plan production volume with a higher rate of accuracy. Maintenance people prefer to perform this work on a scheduled basis and get away from the "crash" situation that accompanies breakdowns. They thereby increase the utilization of available manpower and machine time, prolong equipment life, and improve maintenance costs.

A sophisticated process of extracting ultrafine sulfide mineral particles of under 1µm size suspended in clay slurry has been developed through studies of electrochemical properties of particle surface. Experimental procedure and data of the process applied to some clay ores containing sphalerite and pyrite, and molybdenite and other sulfide minerals are reported. Discussions concentrated on the function of process reagents, particularly on various modifying reagents, and on the effect of dispersed or flocculated state of ultrafine particles in slurry which affect significantly the performance of the process.

Since 1965 when the first mole was used on Bureau work, the Bureau of Reclamation has completed 17 tunnels of over 5,000 feet in length. The longest was 12.8 miles. Total length of the 17 tunnels was 376,207 feet, or over 71 miles. The finished diameter varied from 7 feet 0 inch to 18 feet 0 inch with 82 percent (58 miles) being less than 12 feet 0 inch in diameter when lined. All of these tunnels except one are gravity flow, water conveyance tunnels with relatively flat gradient. One is a low-head pressure tunnel. All were constructed by contracts resulting from fixed-price bids. Starting in 1964 the Bureau of Reclamation initiated the practice of giving several options in the specifications on methods of tunnel excavation. Since that time, construction work has been completed on 17 tunnels. Of this number, 11 were mole excavated and 6 were excavated by conventional drill and blast methods. In general, there has been 2 feet of mole excavation for every 1 foot of drill and blast. Cost comparisons are based on only 13 tunnels because the Bureau has 4 recently completed tunnels that have pending claims; therefore, final cost data are not available. Some definite trends show from the data available; however, the number of completed tunnels in some categories is so small the results cannot really be considered a trend. As more data become available, the indications will become more reliable. The information is presented to indicate general trends and comparisons and cannot be meaningfully used for a one-on-one comparison because of individual tunnel differences not considered.

The Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is a geologic repository for disposal of transuranic waste and is operated by the US Department of Energy. The repository is located at a depth of 655 min the Permian age salt beds of the Salado Formation. The exhaust air from the facility is independently monitored by the Environmental Evaluation Group to verify compliance with regulatory release limits for radioactive materials. A May 1995 video inspection of the exhaust shaft identified fluid migration into the uppermost 25 m of the shaft. Since then, water has been observed flowing in from cracks in the shaft lining between 16and 25 m below surface level at an estimated rate of between 5 and15 m3/d. This water inflow has not only negatively impacted the equipment in the shaft, associated duct-work and monitoring equipment located at the top of the shaft, but also challenged efforts to verify compliance at the WIPP. This paper provides an analysis of these effects.

The key to concentrator automation is practical means for obtaining continuous assay data from concentrator streams. The technique most successfully used is x-ray fluorescence analysis. The practical reality of on-stream x-ray analysis has been achieved through effort over the past twenty years, marked by an occasional breakthrough, but more typically a step-by-step development to which many individuals and organizations have contributed. The net result of this progress is the present capability to install on-stream x-ray analyzer systems on a turn-key basis. It is now possible to provide all components of an x-ray analysis system as a completely engineered unit which can be put into immediate use, minimizing needs for specialized application know- ledge to benefit from continuous assaying in process control. The economic factors which influence the choice of system and limitations of the x-ray fluorescence technique for slurry analysis are reviewed.

In order to investigate the explosibility of sulphide mineral dusts, sulphide ore samples were collected from five underground metalliferous mines in Australia. The mineralogical and chemical composition of the dust samples was analysed by X-Ray Powder Diffraction and Atomic Absorption techniques. Simulated post detonation fumes were produced and used in dust explosibility tests to examine the influence of the fumes on sulphide dust ex- plosions. These tests were conducted in a 20 Litre Siwek Explosion Chamber with measurement and control system that is regarded as a standard testing system worldwide for dust explosion studies. The dust mineralogical composition and dust explosibility tests indicated that the content of sulphur can not accurately predict the explosibity of the sulphide dust. The percentage content of pyrite in the sulphide dust can be a relatively reliable diagnostic criterion in evaluating the risk of sulphide dust explosions in the mining of a massive sulphide orebody. The hybrid explosion tests demonstrated that the post detonation fumes from ANFO not only decrease the lower explosion limit of the sulphide dusts, but also increase the severity of the dust explosions. The explosion pressure reaches its peak value when the fumes content in the explosion chamber is about 20 per cent by volume

The Lucerne Valley limestone mining district is in the San Bernardino Mountains, one of the major ranges in the Transverse Range Province of southern California. Several large limestone mining operations are present along the north range front in Lucerne Valley, and the area is one of the premier limestone mining districts in the country. Resources are contained in Paleozoic carbonate rocks that are part of a thick late Precambrian and Paleozoic sequence that uncomformably overlies crystalline basement. The district has been affected by multiple episodes of metamorphism and deformation, as well as by a complex sequence of late Cenozoic structural events. Detailed studies, however, have demonstrated that these rocks can be divided into formations correlatable with late Precambrian to Permian strata of the Cordilleran miogeocline. The district is the leading producer of white, high-purity calcium-carbonate products in western North America. Pluess-Staufer (California) Inc. mines and processes high-purity white limestone from extensive deposits, and is one of the largest producers of high-quality limestone fillers and extenders in the western United States. Major factors influencing the genesis of economic carbonate deposits in the district include depositional environment, post-depositional processes such as diagenesis, dolomitization and/or silicification, regional and/or contact metamorphism and associated intrusive activity, faulting, folding, uplift and erosion, and preservation from erosion. Regional geologic studies, detailed geologic mapping, intimate knowledge of stratigraphy, and recognition of complex structural relationships have proven to be invaluable tools in the discovery of high quality calcium carbonate deposits in the district.

Zirconium and hafnium are the twin elements of the periodic table because they are always found together. They resemble each other so closely that hafnium was not discovered until 135 years after the discovery of zirconium. Zirconium was discovered by Klaproth in 1789 and isolated 35 years later by Berzelius. Because hafnium's chemical properties are so close to those of zirconium, it was not discovered until 1923 when Coster and von Hevesy detected it using X-ray spectrographic analysis. These elements occur most commonly in nature as the mineral zircon (ZrSiO,) and less commonly as baddeleyite (ZrO,). They also are found as a variety of other silicates. Zircon was identified as a component in alluvial and beach sands in 1895, but it was not produced in any quantity until 20 years later. During World War I, it was produced as a coproduct of beach sand mining for titanium minerals just south of Jacksonville Beach, FL, and was patented as a refractory. It was not until the 1930s, when Zircon Rutile, Ltd., began mining at Byron Bay on the east coast of Australia, that zircon was first used as foundry sand. Later in the 1940s, NL Industries and Humphreys Gold Corp. began production of zircon sands from fossil beaches in northeast Florida. Baddeleyite first became available as a commercial product in 1916, but never in the quantity of zircon. Zircon holds a unique position as an industrial mineral because it is used for both its physical and chemical properties and as an ore of zirconium and hafnium metals. Australia is the major zircon producer followed by the Republic of South Africa and the United States. Zircon is also produced in India, Sierra Leone, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, the former USSR, China, Thailand, and Brazil. The location of world zircon mines, baddeleyite mines, and undeveloped zircon ores are shown in [Fig. 1]. World production of zirconium mineral concentrates is shown in [Table 1].

Horizontal stresses are caused by global platetectonic forces. During 1995 alone they were largely responsible for the closing of two longwall mines in the United States. This paper presents six case histories from Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Kentucky and Alabama. In each case, a mine encountered roof falls or difficult ground conditions at the headgate caused by horizontal-stress concentrations. The problems are detailed, and the control measures adopted are described. In most cases, nearby longwall panels without stress concentrations were trouble free. The paper also discusses detailed measurements that were made at two adjacent Pennsylvania longwalls. One headgate was oriented to avoid a horizontal-stress concentration, and the other was not. Eliminating the stress concentration dramatically reduced roof support loads and roof deformation. The paper concludes that proper panel orientation and sequence is the key to maintaining headgate ground control. The optimum orientation is not parallel to the maximum horizontal stress, as previously thought, but rather it is 20o in the stress shadow of the gob. An automated method of microscopy for determining the pyrite size distribution on two base coals that were crushed to 28 mesh x 0 has been developed. Polished epoxy-bound coal pellets were prepared and examined by a Zeiss IBAS image analyzer utilizing a program developed from provided software. Pyrite size distribution determination is considered a necessary first step in pyrite characterization that could lead to successful predictions, by microscopy, of a coal's theoretical pyritic sulfur removal. Our research efforts to date have indicated that the IBP-S can be a reliable instrument for determining pyrite size distribution in crushed coal. A program was also developed to convert pyrite size data to a weight basis for comparisons to the results from chemical analyses. The problems encountered in our research and their solutions will be presented in the discussion.

INTRODUCTION The demand for tunnelling can be related to urban population size and density; often, tunnelling occurs when a certain city size and density threshold is reached, and increases thereafter as a function of those population characteristics. Subways for rail mass transit are the most notable example, of course, but tunnels for water supply and perhaps for sewerage can also be related to size and density. As cities grow large they sometimes outgrow their local water supply and have to import water from distant places via tunnels; witness New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco. And it has been suggested that Chicago use deep tunnels for storm water storage because tertiary treatment to meet water quality standards will require treating storm water runoff.(1) Other uses of underground space also increase with urban density, e.g., underground parking, concourses and shopping centers such as Rockefeller Center in New York City and the Place Ville-Marie in Montreal. These examples can be viewed as illustrative of the central point of urban land economics. As the number of people locating in a place increase, they bid up land values and make the more intensive use of land economic, with land defined to embrace the space both above and below the surface. Hence, we are led to think about the city, and of urban land use, in three dimensions. Now, if we accept the relation of underground space use to urban size and density, recent demographic trends seem anything but hopeful for future tunnelling demand: urban density is declining, population growth is slowing down generally, and there

INTRODUCTION The most serious occupational radiation episode in U.S. history was the exposure of uranium miners to radon daughters in the 1945-1968 time period. Although the maximum permissible dose at that time was 12 WLM (working level months) per year, average exposures were several times that figure, and ten times higher exposures were not uncommon. Starting in the early 1960s, mounting epidemiological evidence appeared for an excess incidence of lung cancer among these miners; up to 1974, there was an excess of 134 cases (159 observed vs 25 expected) among the 4000 in the group under study (NAS-1980). When this excess became apparent, the Federal Government took jurisdiction, greatly tightened enforcement, and in 1969 lowered the maximum permissible exposure to 4 WLM per year. These standards were met largely by a great improvement in ventilation. As a result of these measures, average miner exposures were reduced 5-fold from 1965 to 1968 and by another factor of 3 by 1970. In 1978, the 4 WLM/year maximum permissible exposure was exceeded by only 37 of 7500 underground miners, for only 16 wars it exceeded by more than 25%, and for only 8 was it exceeded by 502 (AIF-1980). The average exposures to the various groups are listed in Table 1. We see that the average exposure for all miners was 1.03 WLM, and for those who worked essentially full time underground it was 1.45 WLM. For purpose of later discussion, it will be convenient to choose a single value for average exposures. In view of the fact that employment situations and job categories are bound to vary over a lifetime of work, we take this to be 1.3 WLM/year. The purpose of this paper is not to dwell on history, but rather to address the question of whether or not this present situation is satisfactory. This question was considered recently by a study group under the auspices of National Institue of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH-1980) and it answered the question in the negative, concluding that the maximum permissible exposure should be substantially reduced. However, their arguments were incomplete and were lacking in perspective. The principal thrust of this paper is to provide some of the material overlooked. RISK TO URANIUM MINERS FROM RADON EXPOSURE In order to quantify the risk to uranium miners under present working conditions, it is first necessary to estimate the risk of lung cancer per WLM of exposure. The most straightforward way of doing this is to use the data on the group of uranium miners under study. These are listed in Table 2 for 8 exposure ranges and for the total group (NAS-1980). If all data are given equal weight, the risk is seen to be 3.5 x 10-6 per year per WLM. Much can be said in favor of using this value for the risk as dose independent; it is within one standard deviation (SD) of the observations in 5 of the 8 dose categories (as expected from the definition of SD), and within 2 SD for all 8, and for the three cases differing from the mean by more than one SD, two are above and one is below. However, the uranium miner exposures in the present situation will be far below those covered in Table 2, so it is worth considering the possibility that the risk differs from this at low doses. From the last column of Table 2 we see that the experience from all exposures below 600 WLM indicates a risk higher than the mean for the entire group by more than two standard deviations (the value 600 WLM in this comparison was deliberately chosen to maximize this deviation; for exposures below 360 WLM and 840 WLM, the excess is only 1.0 and 1.6 standard deviations respectively). In view of this tendency for the risk to be higher at lower dose, we will take the risk to be 5.0 x 10-6 per year per WLM in what we will refer to as model A. Spokane Research Center personnel have been investigating the use of seismic tomography to monitor the behavior of a rock mass, detect hazardous ground conditions, and assess the mechanical integrity of a rock mass affected by mining. Seismic tomography can be a valuable tool for determining relative stress in deep (> 1220 m) underground pillars. If high-stress areas are detected, they can be destressed prior to development or avoided. High-stress areas can be monitored with successive seismic surveys to determine if stress decreases to a level where development can be initiated safely. There are several benefits to using seismic tomography to identify high stress in deep underground pillars. The technique is reliable, cost-effective, efficient, and non-invasive. Also, investigators can monitor large rock masses, as well as monitor pillars during the mining cycle. By identifying areas of high stress, engineers will be able to assure that miners are working in a safer environment.

It had been more than a decade since this many booths were occupied at an SME Annual Meeting, but at the 2010 meeting in Phoenix, AZ 630 booths were sold to 470 vendors from the entire spectrum of the mining and minerals industry. Exhibitors such as Metso, FLSmidth, West-Tech, ABB, NIOSH, Eriez and Resource West took their usual prominent places on the exhibit floor and were joined by newcomers such as tunnel boring machine manufacturer Herrenknecht AG, Frontier Kemper, the International Society of Explosive Engineers and more than 100 other first-time exhibitors. On the floor, one could find everything from a new pair of boots to a new career in the recruitment pavilion where some of the biggest companies in mining (Barrick Gold, Freeport-McMoRan, Newmont Mining, etc..) set up shop. The following is a look at some of the companies and products that were on display at the 2010 meeting. The term olivine was first used in 1790 by J. Werner, and the corresponding mineral was so named because of its olive-green color (Hunter, 1941). Olivine is the principal component of the rock known as dunite. While by classic definition dunite is composed of 90% or more olivine, commercial use of these terms has resulted in more specific definitions. Commercially, the term olivine is used to designate a material that consists of 85% or more forsterite and contains 45 to 50% MgO, 39 to 42% SiO2, 5 to 8% Fe2O3, and has an ignition loss (LOI) of 1 to 2%. The term dunite designates a rock that contains 36 to 45% MgO, 36 to 39% SiO2, and has an ignition loss of as much as 10% (Teague, 1983). GEOLOGY Olivine is found in basic igneous and basic metamorphic rocks whose age varies from pre-Ordovician to Tertiary. Economic deposits are of magmatic origin and are restricted to the dunite variety of the peridotite group of ultrabasic igneous rocks. Olivine also occurs in basic igneous rocks such as gabbro, basalt, and diabase and more rarely as an accessory mineral in granite and metamorphosed crystalline limestones. Mineralogy The term olivine refers to a group of orthosilicate minerals in isomorphous series with magnesium-rich forsterite (Mg2Si04) as one end member and iron-rich fayalite (Fe,SiO,) as the other. In most olivines the ratio of magnesium to iron varies from 16: 1 to 2: 1. Commercial olivine deposits contain a mixture of forsterite and fayalite with the fayalite content restricted to less than 15% (Reed, 1959; Teague, 1983). Accessory constituents may include primary minerals such as ilmenite, magnetite, diopside, chromite, and garnet and secondary minerals such as chlorite, serpentine, talc, and vermiculite as alteration products. Chemical and Physical Properties The chemical composition of olivine can be expressed as either (Mg, Fe), SiO, or 2(Mg, Fe)O.SiO,. Table 1 presents chemical analyses for some commercial olivines. The physical properties of olivine are shown in Table 2. Distribution of Major Deposits Commercial olivine and dunite deposits are found in Norway, Japan, Spain, India, Italy, the United States, Sweden, Austria, Pakistan, and Mexico. Noncommercial deposits have been reported in New Zealand, Zimbabwe, South Africa, New Caledonia, Greece, Brazil, and Canada (Teague, 1983). The present markets for olivine are characterized by low unit value, high volume, and high sensitivity to freight costs, so few deposits are commercially viable. Literature from the USSR indicates that considerable research on olivine refractories is being done. (Afansa'ev, 1988), lending credibility to the conjecture that commercial deposits are being mined there. In eastern Canada synthetic olivine is being produced by calcining chrysotile asbestos mine tailings. In the United States numerous lenses of olivine extend in a belt from northeast Georgia northeastward across western North Carolina. Total reserves in North Carolina and Georgia are estimated at between 125 and 200 Mt. The largest US deposit is Twin Sisters Mountain, located in Whatcom and Skagit Counties in the state of Washington. This deposit, which has an outcrop area of 93 km2 and a relief of about 1 525 m. is estimated to contain 1 800 Mt of fresh, unaltered olivine (Teague, 1983). In addition, the US Bureau of Mines reports reserves of 50 Mt on Cypress Island in the state of Washington, and the literature reports eight complexes in southeastern Alaska, some containing cores of olivine as large as 1.6 km in diameter (Taylor, Jr., 1967). The world's largest deposit of olivine occurs in the Aaheim area of Norway, where reserves are estimated at a 2 000 Mt. Several other Norwegian deposits contain as much as 5 Mt each. In Japan the production of ultrabasic rocks is currently about 6 Mtpy, but the bulk of this output is serpentinite. Olivineldunite accounts for only 17% of this production. The major olivine deposit in Japan is located at Horoman Hill on the northern island of Hokkaido. Reserves at this deposit are estimated at 100 Mt (Anon., 1990). Spain is one of the largest producers of dunite. Reserves in the La Coruna District in northwestern Spain are estimated at 100 Mt. India, also a major dunite producer, has a large deposit at Salem in Tamil Nadu. In Italy olivine/dunite is mined from a deposit near Turin. In Sweden the largest deposit is at Arutats and is reported to be comparable in size to the Twin Sisters deposit in the United States. At present the only production in Sweden is from a deposit 30 km south of the town of Gallivare. Reserves at this deposit are reported to be between 1 and 2 Mt. Other significant deposits are: 1) in Austria at St. Stefan near Leoben, 2) in the Swat District of the North West Frontier Province in Pakistan, and 3) in Mexico at Cuidad Victoria in Tamaulipas (Anon., 1990).

Twin-bore tunnels with a single track in each tunnel are currently the most common subway tunnel configuration. However, a large diameter single-bore tunnel with two tracks separated by a center wall could replace twin-bore tunnels and introduce potential benefits but require necessary modifications to the subway system. In particular, a nominal 40-foot-diameter single-bore tunnel can be considered in lieu of nominal 20-foot-diameter twin-bore tunnels. This paper discusses the benefits and modifications introduced by replacing twin-bore tunnels with a single-bore tunnel, with respect to various elements of the subway related to the tunnel, stations, track, and tunnel systems.
