This paper describes the vibration transmissibility characteristics of mining vehicle seats under dynamic conditions in an opencast iron ore mine. Magnitude and frequency contents of vibration signals on the seat floor as well as on top of the seats were measured to record the change during transmission. The conventional rigid seats were found to resonate at about 4 Hz, which coincides with the resonance of the human spine. The pneumatic suspension seats also proved to be more efficient in attenuating the overall vibration energy transmitted from the vehicle chassis to the human body.

"In oil fields that have been depleted with conventional surface oil wells but still contain significant reserves, an extraction alternative that has been constructed recently consists of a drilling gallery below the oil-bearing formation at the bottom of a 1,200-ft deep shaft where upward sloping wells are being drilled to allow oil collection by gravity. The gallery is 92-ft diameter with a flat ceiling supported by rock bolts and shotcrete structurally connected to the shaft liner, which doubles as a large tension support element. A special excavation sequence was implemented for the gallery to maximize arching in the stress above the large diameter gallery. The gallery was located in competent sandstone, constructed with sequential excavation methods, and designed with a 3D finite element model. Special consideration was given to optimizing the gallery location to take advantage of the geology for construction and support while giving good positioning to the well drilling equipment. BACKGROUND Brierley Associates was contracted to provide both design and construction management services for an approximately 1,165-ft deep, 18-ft excavated diameter vertical shaft that opens to a 92-ft diameter flat roof gallery. The geotechnical data for the site was based on information available from literature and from data obtained during core drilling and from in-situ testing in a 1250-ft deep borehole. Wire line coring was conducted using a HQ, 10-ft long core barrel with a mud-rotary drilling method through sedimentary bedrock. The geometry of the shaft and the bottom gallery is shown in Figure 1(a). GEOLOGIC SETTING AND STRUCTURAL GEOLOGY The stratigraphy at the site includes a series of interbedded marine limestone, shale, claystone, siltstone, sandstone, and chert units. Limestone and shale are the predominant lithologies in the upper approximately 675 ft, while the lower portion contains five distinct sandstone units and more abundant shale, claystone, siltstone, and coal than the upper zone. A cherty sandstone at a depth of 1,130 below ground surface (bgs) was encountered. At a depth of about 1,000 ft to 1,116 ft bgs, a non-marine sandstone unit was encountered. This sandstone is the hydrocarbon bearing layer. Joints and fractures observed in the limestone had dips ranging from 0 to 90 deg. from horizontal with joint and fracture surfaces that ranged from planar to irregular and smooth to rough. Several, near vertical shear planes with slickensides were observed with surfaces that were generally smooth and planar. RQD values for the limestone ranged from 0 to 100 percent but in general were good to excellent."

United States Antimony Corporation, at its Yankee Fork property in central Idaho, is currently using a combination of flotation, gravity-amalgamation, and concentrate cyanide leaching, silver sulfide precipitation, and activated charcoal loading to recover both silver and gold. Tine processes of flotation, milling, gravity concentration, amalgamation, concentrate leaching, sulfide precipitation and gold recovery via charcoal are discussed. The flow sheet illustrates the use of cyanidation as an alternative to shipment to a smelter.

Large is the applicable adjective here. The largest hydraulic shovel in the world, the largest copper mine in the world, the largest copper producing company in the world. The O&K RH 300 hydraulic excavator has been put into service to move overburden and mine ore at the Chuquicamata open pit mine of the Chilean state copper mining company, Corporation Nacional de Corbre de Chile (Codelco). A large shovel: Equipped with a 26-m3 (34-yd') rock shovel, the RH 300 is able to fill a 170-t (187-st) truck in three passes with cycle times of 30 seconds. A large mine: At present, the Chuquicamata pit is 4 km (2.5 miles) long, 2 km (1.2 miles) wide, and 520 m (1700 ft) deep from rim to bottom bench. The current 450 kt/d (496,000 stpd) of material mined will increase to 600 kt/d (661,000 stpd) when the expanded production rate is reached in 1989. (Chuqui Expansion details, p. 20). A large mining company: Codelco's total output from its two open pit and three underground copper mines is more than 1.1 Mt/a (1.2 million stpy) of copper. This makes Codelco by far the largest copper producer in the world. It accounts for about 15% of the Western World's copper requirements. Chuquicamata is located in the hot and arid Atacama desert of northern Chile. The mine is located 240 km (150 miles) northeast of the port city of Antofagasta. Mine elevation is 2700 m (8850 ft). Chuquicamata's known reserves of oxide and sulfide ores amount to more than 450 Mt (496 million st) of contained copper. There are also reserves of more then 1.4 Mt (1.5 million st) of contained molybdenum. Originally, Chuquicamata was a rail pit. The shovels loaded rail cars hauled by locis on tracks along the benches. During the 1970s, the rail transport was replaced by truck haulage. Crushing and conveying rock waste in the pit is the latest step in the continuing evolution of more productive and economical methods of materials movement. In 1990, the in-pit crushing plant will be in operation. The waste will be mainly transported out of the pit on belt conveyors rather than trucks. The system will incorporate a 9.6-kt/h (10,600-stph) semi-portable crushing station, a 14-km (8.7-mile) conveyor using 1.8 m (6 ft) wide heavy duty belts, and a tripper-spreader to stack the waste dumps. Since Chuqui went into production in 1915, more than 2.5 Gt (2.8 billion st) of material has been excavated. This includes nearly 1.7 Gt (1.9 billion st) of ore from which some 16.4 Mt (18 million st) of copper has been recovered. The Chuquicamata porphyry type ore body is an altered and fractured intrusive granodiorite or quartz-monzonite porphyry that carries the mineralization. The action of ground water on primary sulfide minerals in geo¬logic time has created oxide ores and a zone of secondary enrich¬ment. The oxides occur above the sulfide zone and are also mixed with the upper parts of the latter. At Chuquicamata, the current grade of 1.5% copper is expected to decline to about 1% by 1995. To protect mine personnel and moving equipment at underground roof fall areas, mine operators typically install steel sets, which are covered with wooden blocks and backfilled with an expanding-type cement material. In large roof falls, the cost of void backfilling becomes prohibitively high, causing some mines to leave the voids open. However, the durability of wood over time and the capability of the steel set and wood lagging to resist falling rock are unknown. This has caused concern for the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and ground control engineers. During the last few years, Keystone Mining Services, LLC developed various impact-resistant steel set designs that were approved by MSHA and installed in various underground fall rehabilitations. This paper presents an impact-resistant steel set design methodology, including (1) steel set design per AISC national standard, (2) design, development and laboratory testing of a waterproof coated impact-resistant lagging panel and (3) impactresistant steel set design based on the law of conservation of energy. Two underground cases will be included detailing the application of the system.

Silicon Valley Clean Water signed a progressive-design-build (PDB) contract with Barnard Bessac Joint Venture (BBJV) to design and construct the Gravity Pipeline tunnel in Redwood City, CA. Owner and Design-Builder teamed with designer Arup to provide a final product: 3.3 miles of 182 in. O.D. precast concrete segmentally lined tunnel with 10 ft. and 11 ft. I.D. Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer Mortar (FRPM) carrier pipe, complete with two FRPM Drop Structures. BBJV and Arup collaborated with SVCW to evaluate alternative design concepts, negotiate an agreeable price and reduce contingencies through a transparent estimating process, and deliver the project ahead of schedule.

In July of 1974 a study team comprised of the authors was formed by the Department of the Interior. It was supported in part by funding from the National Science Foundation. The purpose of this study group was to visit coal mines and research and manufacturing facilities in England and Germany, to review the status of mining in these countries, and to identify mining technology which might have application to U. S. mining conditions. The duration of the visit was 18 days. The first week of the trip was spent in England. Time does not permit a complete recitation of the team's impressions but a few of the more interesting technologic developments will be discussed. During Hurricane Harvey over 60% of the 39 WWTPs, including the low-lying 25 MGD Sims North WWTP, and one third of the 382 lift stations owned and operated by the City of Houston were flooded resulting in extensive facility damage, loss of service and uncontrolled release of untreated wastewater into bayous and creeks. In response, the City has embarked on an effort to improve system resiliency by consolidating at-risk facilities with a network of deep sewer tunnels. These tunnels will provide secondary benefits to the collection system of augmenting the capacity of the existing 6,000 miles of sewer mains and lowering the collection system profile in poor performing areas. Investigations on the cost to mitigate the flood damages by raising the liquid stream processes at the Sims North WWTP is estimated at nearly $450 million. Instead of spending $450 million to raise the plant, the funds will be directed to providing a more robust and resilient wastewater system for the Sims basin area of Houston. The backbone of this new system is a 4.5-mile-long, 110 inch diameter deep gravity sewer tunnel that will convert a system heavily reliant on distributed lift stations to a majority gravity system with a deep consolidated lift station at the Sims South WWTP. This will also allow the City to address the flood prone infrastructure at Sims North and consolidate its operations into a single permitted outfall for this collection system. This approach is the outcome of a team effort focused on maximizing system resiliency and sustainability for the next 100 years. By thinking outside the box, the City of Houston will not only mitigate the flooding risk at Sims North WWTP, but also solve regulatory and operational challenges throughout the sewershed and deliver a winwin on multiple levels.

A critical path approach is presented for the problem of mine ventilation net- works where regulators and fans are employed to control the airflow distribution which is preassigned. The problem is a classic one which arises in mine ventilation planning. By identifying the analogy between the network for controlled flow and that for CPPI, the applications of the well known CPM technique to the ventilation network problem become straight- forward. The mathematical formulation of the problem is presented and the solutions are illustrated with examples. The effect of booster fans on the total air power consumed in a ventilation network are also discussed.

This work was completed in a 440 KW pilot-scale combustor in preparation for a 50,000 Kg/hr industrial steam boiler limestone injection test program. The main objectives of the work were to: (1) identify the variables which affect sulfur capture, (2) determine the maximum sulfur removal, and (3) determine the effect of limestone addition on furnace operability and heat transfer. The variables which were identified as being important in sulfur capture were: Ca/S molar ratio, flue gas temperature at the limestone injection location, and limestone particle residence time. The maximum sulfur dioxide removal was 72%. The addition of limestone increased the particle deposition rate in the combustor; however, all deposits were easily removed by an air lance.

Central to Newmont Gold's Mine planning system is the ability to interactively perform cut and fill operations on topographic contours and to accurately evaluate grades and tonnages within contour outlines using polygon set manipulation routines. This paper develops the applied geometry concepts that underlie these routines. Included are representation of volumes with contours, point in polygon test, block proportion in polygon calculation, polygon area and centroid calculation, and intersection, union, and complement between polygon sets.

Electric locomotives powered by extensive electrical cabling systems were prevalent in the mining industry in the early days of the 20th Century [1]. Since the movement of tethered electrical mining locomotives was limited, the advent of diesel-powered mobile mining equipment provided more flexibility. This led the mining industry to be dominated by diesel-powered locomotives for most of the 20th Century and the entire 21st Century, to date. However, diesel power has certain drawbacks. Diesel-powered vehicles produce tailpipe emissions such as diesel particulate matter, carbon dioxide, sulfur dioxide, and nitrogen oxide. Mine workers exposed to these emissions were, and continue to be, subject to health issues such as respiratory problems, increased risk of lung cancer, and cardiovascular disease. [2][3]. Extensive ventilation systems are required to dilute the diesel exhaust and dissipate the heat generated by these vehicles. Moreover, as mines are getting deeper due to depleting resources, ventilation costs in diesel-powered mines are becoming increasingly high. These factors, coupled with the trend towards greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction in mine operations, has allowed zero-emission electric locomotive systems to gain traction. As lithium-ion battery technology is becoming more advanced, battery-powered electric vehicles can now perform duty cycles comparable to those of diesel-powered vehicles. Although battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) are comparable to diesel-powered vehicles in terms of mobility, they have certain limitations. For instance, the amount of onboard energy is limited by the battery energy density and specific energy. The MT42 diesel haul truck from Epiroc, for example, has a fuel tank capacity of 580L, which is equivalent to around 1450 kWh of net electrical energy [4]. The electrified version of the MT42, on the other hand, has an onboard battery with 375 kWh of usable energy weighing around 4.9 metric tonnes [5]. Moreover, storing and refueling of diesel-powered vehicles is simple and quick, whereas battery energy storage and charging systems require extensive infrastructure development. Charging time is mostly limited by battery chemistry and design. Due to these limitations, the benefits of battery-powered mining vehicles are more likely to be realized with proper planning and optimization of the BEV fleet. This includes optimizing mining layouts for BEV use, charging infrastructure design, and management of onboard energy storage systems.

The transformation of raw iron ore into high quality steel can take place via several processes. A general consistent theme involves the upgrading of the iron ores via methods such as flotation and magnetic separation, the preparation of an agglomerate such as via pelletization or sintering, the smelting of the agglomerate into a high grade iron product, and the further refining of iron into specific steel alloys. Each of these steps admit potential for optimizations and alternatives, and the process overall is critical to meeting the world’s continuing iron demands.

Reconnaissance mineral exploration based on the distribution of ore metals in stream sediments has become a generally accepted method of mineral reconnaissance. This approach seems to work almost equally well in all climates and in all kinds of terrain, provided of course that the ore deposits being sought are exposed at or near the surface and are actively undergoing erosion. Nobody with any experience in the field would question the validity of the concept on which stream sediment reconnaissance is based. Considerable dispute does arise, however, when the subject of density of sample sites per unit area, or sample spacing, comes up for discussion. What is the optimum balance between completeness of coverage and cost? The tacit assumption is frequently made that a greater sample density necessarily leads to more complete coverage and hence a lower probability of missing an important discovery, without regard for the size of the stream sample or the topology of the drainage pattern. The purpose of this paper is to attempt to bring the problem of site selection in stream sediment sampling into better focus, and to present a formula that may help in planning reconnaissance programs.

Much of what is reported was published elsewhere over a year ago (i.e., in their reference: Chi, G., Fuerstenau, M.C., Brandt, R.C. and Ghosh, A., 1996, "Improved comminution efficiency through controlled blasting during mining," International Journal of Min¬eral Processing, Vol. 47, p. 93). There is nothing unusual or significant about a 10% or more difference in grindability between two materials of apparently similar origin and other attributes (such as chemical assays, hardness and specific gravity). Consider also that: • the materials came from different locations in the pit; • only two sets of four blastholes were considered per blast: • spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered; • only two pairs of data were collected; • the impact of sampling error and bias, • both of which could be significant in this case; and • normal experimental error in parameter measurement and calculation. It is clearly inappropriate to draw any conclusions with regard to cause-and-effect relationships without first presenting a thorough error analysis. A substantial number of randomly selected test and control areas might provide meaningful statistical evidence of the claimed effect of the variables being studied. Even that appears doubtful, however, because Figures 3 and 4 show about as much variation in crushing energy for the two "regular" conditions vs. regular and altered conditions. On a separate, but also important issue, broad experience with autogenous/semiautogenous milling has shown that smaller or weaker feed material results in reduced tonnage. ? Reply Thank you for the opportunity to respond to the comments of Messrs. Mclvor ant Fink. The points raised are addressed in the order of presentation. As the commenters noted, there are parallels between this article and a previous manuscript. The reason for these complementary articles is that the audiences for the two publications are different, although there is obviously some overlap. We believe that the different audiences each profit from the technical aspects of the two manuscripts. We are not in agreement that a grindability difference of 10% is insignificant. The laboratory work is corroborated by data obtained at plant scale, which confirms that an increase in throughput of the same magnitude (between 5% and 10%) is achieved when the blasting pattern is modified, i.e., reduced from 9 to 8 m (29.5 to 26.2 ft). This increase in throughput translates into substantial power savings for ore grinding. No differences in appearance in the rock were noted between the two adjacent areas. Rock in both areas belonged to the same rock mass/block, which was quite homogeneous and without geological features in between that could create drastic differences in comminution characteristics. Given the resources, we would have sampled from all of the holes. Additional data would certainly have been desirable, as would have been additional funding to expand the study. Their comment, "spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was also altered," is not clear. Figure 1 does not show the initiation sequence. Without the initiation sequence, we do not understand how the commenters concluded that spatial orientation with respect to the face and other blastholes was altered. The commenters may be trying to make the point that the four-hole configurations with respect to the original bench face are not exactly the same. In fragmenting the

In the course of time, an increasing number of investigations on jet cutting all kinds of material, such as rocks1, 2, 3, metals4, 5, and wood6 have been reported to serve various applications. This paper deals with one particular application of jets, viz deep-well drilling for hydrocarbon exploration and production. A number of papers have been published on this subject 7, 8, 9, some of which refer to jets purposely containing abrasives, termed 'jetted particle drilling'7. Since such abrasives complicate fluid handling considerably and do not appear to be absolutely necessary for making hole we have restricted ourselves to conventional drilling fluids. A large part of our investigation has been performed with the aid of three laboratory-type drilling machines, which permit tests on both micro-bits (12 in) and full-scale bits (62 - 9 5/8 in). In view of the application of jets in deep wells, care has been taken to simulate hydrostatic pressures as they exist in the field on the hole bottom. These have been found to have a major effect on the bit-penetration rate for various drilling fluids. Following experiments with single nozzles, laboratory bits have been designed, improved further and developed for field use. Field runs on 9 5/8 in bits, using conventional equipment and pumps, served to verify the feasibility of the jet drilling concept. Further efforts are evidently needed to evaluate the jet drilling method. It is encouraging that one of these10, a field test programme, is supported by a number of oil companies jointly. Such a combined effort is of paramount importance to evaluate and develop this new method of drilling to its full potential in a reasonable period of time. This paper aims to contribute to that ultimate goal.

In tunnel condition assessment, the trend is towards comprehensive 3D measurement combined with high quality image texture to document and quantify damages to the tunnel surface and to create a cohesive data base of the structural conditions throughout its lifespan. The faster such measurements can be made on site, the less it impacts traffic conditions of the highly sophisticated subway systems. The Dibit high-speed 3D scanning system which is based on Photogrammetry and LiDAR technology enables data acquisition in tunnels at a speed of up to 60 mph. Given the high rate of speed the system can operate, tunnel shutdowns can be drastically reduced, and tunnel safety increased. The photorealistic texturing of the 3D-model allows the identification and analysis of smallest material damage (e.g., cracks ≥0.3 mm wide). The publication illustrates technical details and 3D results of the innovative system from measurements that were performed in the subway tunnels of the Bay Area Rapid Transit System in San Francisco, CA (total length 66.23 km).

"Location: The Menominee district has been described geologically in several units, because the known iron-bearing formations of the larger region are not a really connected. From the commercial and mining standpoint, however, the district em¬braces, all that territory extending from a point about five miles east of Vulcan to a point a few miles west of Iron River, an east-west distance of about fifty miles, and from a line about two miles south of Vulcan to one ten miles north of Crystal Falls, a north-south distance of about thirty-five miles. This area is largely in the State of Michigan, but includes more than two hundred square miles in Florence County, Wisconsin. The chief towns of the district are Vulcan, Iron Mountain, Iron River, and Crystal Falls, in Michigan, and . Florence in Wisconsin. The Wisconsin portion of the district has not produced a large portion of the output of the area.History: The earliest reports of iron ore in the Menominee district were made by J. W. Foster and S. W. Hill, who conducted a geological exploration from Lake Superior to Green Bay in the fall of 1848. It is a remarkable fact that in spite of their plain statements regarding their discoveries, these state¬ments were apparently forgotten for a period of nearly twenty years. Foster states that ""about two miles southeast of the lower falls (of the Twin Falls on the Menominee River) near Sec. 30, T. 40 N., R. 30 W. there is a large bed of specular iron ore associated with the talcose and argillaceous slates. It makes its appearance on the north side of the Lake and can be traced a mile and a half in length and in places is exposed one hundred feet in width."""
