"The history of Duluth commences with Daniel de Greysolon du Lhut, one of the explorers of the Upper Mississippi who came to the head of the lakes in the summer of 1679. Radisson and Groseillier, and Claude Allouez, a Jesuit priest, are supposed to have visited the head of the lakes, -but there is no authentic record previous to that of du Lhut.In 1792, the fur traders established a fort at Fond du Lac, fifteen miles up the St. Louis River from Lake Superior, but within the limits of the present city •of Duluth. In the early 50's, there were a few scattering settlers at Oneota and around the George Stuntz trading post on Minnesota point. In 1855-6, the settlement on Minnesota point was called Duluth, commemorating the name du Lhut, and organized as a town in 1857. The first board of trustees and town council consisted of -William Nettleton, J. B. Culver; Robert E. Jefferson, Grin W. Rice and William Old: In 1870, the city of Duluth was incorporated, and five years later a portion of the same territory was incorporated as the village of Duluth, and the two municipal corporations were still in existence on March 1, 1887, when the city and the village of Duluth were incorporated as the present city.The first saw mill in Duluth was erected in 1856-57, on the present site of the ship canal. It cut logs from a virgin forest at the upper end of Minnesota point.The first railroad was built to the head of the lakes in 1870. The charter for this road had been granted in 1861 to the Lake Superior and Mississippi Railroad Company, afterward called the St. Paul and Duluth, and which is now a part of the Northern Pacific Railroad."

The probability of a particle passing through a maze is predictable and consistent. This principle may be utilized to effect a particle size separation of materials by presenting a physical maze to a stream of material that will allow the fine particles to pass, while deflecting the coarse particles. A maze is effective even though all apertures encountered are many times larger than the particles being separated. By designing a machine that allows the probability parameters to be controlled and varied without changing physical dimensions, probability sizing becomes a useful tool for the separation of granular materials.

The Metropolitan St. Louis Water District’s Project Clear is a 28-year program targeting wastewater capacity throughout St. Louis, MO. The extensive program includes the Jefferson Barracks Tunnel, running parallel to the Mississippi River at 2 m ID and 5,400 m long. A rebuilt Robbins Main Beam TBM began boring but hit challenging conditions about 2,400 m in, including water inflows. A larger 4.1 m Robbins Main Beam machine will complete the remaining 3,050 m in limestone, dolomite, and shale. The TBM will utilize a high-powered, high breakout torque cutterhead along with enhanced 360-degree probing & grouting capabilities to detect any karst formations.

This paper describes the 6, 000 tpd, three stage haulage system at the Ozark Lead Company's mine in southeastern Missouri. It details the methods and problems pertinent to the loading, hauling, sorting, crushing, storing and hoisting of waste rock and ores obtained from underground development headings and production areas. The Ozark Lead Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Kennecott Copper Corporation. Its mine is located nine miles south of Bunker in Reynolds County at the south end of the "New Lead Belt" mining district. Development started in May, 1964, by drilling a seven foot diameter (six foot cased), 1, 250 foot development-ventilation shaft. Drifting began in August, 1965, to obtain a bulk ore sample, to test ore continuity, and to drive two mine levels while the pre-grouted production shaft was being sunk. Over 7, 900 feet of 12 by 24 foot drifting was done from this small shaft. In March, 1966, a 20 foot diameter, three compartment, concrete lined production shaft was collared. It intersected existing development headings at a depth of 1, 195 feet in April, 1967, and was completed along with a concentrator and other facilities in June, 1968. Mine production began that month, with 5, 000 tpd reached in 1970.\

In a world of technology and electronic communication, it is easy to forget what engineers do best with a problem: sitting around a table, exchanging views and ideas with sketches and respecting everyone?s view. This was the approach adopted in the project to arrive at a solution for the cross passage opening sup-port for the Seattle University Link Extension. Schedule and space constraints usually impede concurrent cross passage excavation and tunnel boring machine (TBM) operation. And where the space is constrained, opening support solutions that maximize available cross sections are of great benefit. While there are a number of solutions that minimize space, some of these solutions can require expensive steelwork and extensive drilling and fixing. However, following a detailed round-the-table discussion of the options and constraints, it was identified that a shotcrete shell would not only limit obstruction of the space during installation, but also permit easy installation, particularly around services, and avoid costly steelwork and drilling and fixing.

The closing remarks of a paper which I presented at the annual AIME meeting at Dallas, Texas during February of 1963; contained a forecast of increased activity in trackless underground ore mining which finalized that presentation. At that time, HAD I been peering through my brightest rose colored glasses, I could not have foreseen the unprecedented rapidity of acceleration of underground ore mining methods which has since ensued. From Death Valley, California diagonally to St. Johns, New Foundland; from Australia to Africa to Sweden to France and Germany; from South America to Southern Mexico to Northern Saskatchewan and Northern Manitoba the expansion of trackless underground ore mining methods has probably progressed at a faster rate than any other revolutionary' change in the history of underground ore mining.

"What is the primary responsibility of geo-engineers in mining? Early in my career, I was asked this question by an experienced engineer. After explaining some various tasks, I was informed that the main responsibility was to monitor. Although this proved true for many cases, I came to understand that monitoring is merely one means to achieve the primary responsibility of a geo-engineer — ensure the safety of all personnel. The potential for groundwater to impact stability allows this responsibility to be shared with hydrogeologists as well. Inherently, we monitor to identify risks; we analyze designs and develop models to mitigate risks; and we are provided opportunities to explain to supervisors the geo-risks to personnel and mine plans that will result from particular courses of action. A couple years ago, I took an opportunity to share experiences from the first several years of my career as a geotechnical engineer with junior geoengineering staff within my company. The intent was to share situations that were a part of my development, so they could learn and understand their responsibility to the safety of all personnel. Similarly, the purpose of this article will be to share these thoughts with new geo-engineers in the industry in order to help prepare them for the challenges they will face.What is our purpose?A senior hydrogeologist shared an experience that occurred in their career. The experienced hydrogeologist had spent some time with the hydrogeology staff, most of them relatively new to the mining industry, to understand how they viewed, and carried out, what they perceived as their responsibility at an active mining operation. After a couple months of observing and mentoring, the senior hydrogeologist met with everyone and posed the question “What is our purpose?” I am sure that most junior geo-engineers would start explaining different tasks or projects that they must complete. The list would include monitor ground water levels, track slope movement, evaluate designs, build models, oversee drilling programs, etc. These individuals did as well their supervisor. After going around the room allowing each individual to answer, the experienced hydrogeologist provided them the real answer to the question: Safety. If you examine the root intent of nearly every responsibility geotechnical engineers and hydrogeologists have, it is to apply our professional skills to ensure the safety of our workforce. When the objective of safety from the geotechnical and hydrogeology disciplines is achieved, inherently accomplishing the mine plan should follow suit, or it should significantly minimize the impact by gravity or ground water."

This study was initiated to investigate the occurrence of cinnabar in the oxidation zones of some mercury sulfide deposits. Seven mines or mine districts were visited and samples were taken from both the oxidation and primary zones of these deposits in order to compare their mineralogies and assess Vie chemical changes that took place during oxidation. As a result of the study of these specimens, several limiting factors are suggested for the chemical environments and processes active in both the deposition and oxidation of mercury sulfide deposits. The Mt. Jackson mine, near Guerneville, California (location map, fig. 1), was studied in some detail and forms the basis of this paper. The mine has not heretofore been described in detail in the literature. The Mt. Jackson mine is considered typical of mercury sulfide deposits occurring at the faulted boundaries of serpentinite bodies and enclosing sediments. Such mines are common in the California and Oregon Coast Ranges? Specimens collected by the author from the New Idria and New Almaden districts, the Mt. Diablo, the Culver Bear, and the Buena Vista mines in California, and the Opalite district (Cordero and Bretz, mines) on the Oregon-Nevada border were studied for comparison with the Mt. Jackson samples. The mine description, maps and sketches were composed from field maps kindly provided by Francis Fredericks, consulting geologist to the Sonoma Quick-silver Mine Inc. during the author's visit in 1962. Additional information was obtained from the company maps and minor corrections and interpretations were added by the author.

Clinkers are the result of a seam of coal catching fire and burning the surrounding rocks. The fires caused the surrounding rocks to be baked at high temperatures, removing organic material and partially forming glass. These rocks become hard, orange, and brick like, forming clinker. The purpose of the study is to determine their potential to contain economic levels of critical minerals, including Rare Earth Elements. Some clinkers contain over 200 ppm total REE.

A variety of processing technologies exist for recovery from both primary and secondary sources of rhenium. Currently, there are no known primary rhenium deposits; thus, the method in which primary rhenium is produced is dependent on the commodity of which it is a byproduct, e.g., copper, molybdenum, uranium, etc. In addition, focus on the recovery of rhenium from secondary sources, such as alloy scraps and catalysts, is continually growing. This paper presents a review of both primary and secondary processing technologies for the recovery of rhenium.

The effect of anions such as sulfate, chloride and nitrate on the solubility of rare earth element (REE)-bearing phosphates and fluoro-carbonates was examined using relevant thermodynamic data. The study found that these anions have significant influences on the overall dissolution of REEs from various sources in the aqueous media.

The Lithium Corporation of America's Hallman-Beam spodumene-pegmatite open pit mine is located in the Kings Mountain area of North Carolina. Figure 1. Presently this area of North Carolina is the lithium center of the U.S., if not of the whole world. The Lithium Corporation mine was started in 1968 and now covers 61,000m2 (15 acres) with projected are reserves in excess of 20 years. Lithium occurs at the Hallman-Beam property in a mineral known as spodumene (LiAlSi2O6), a lithium aluminum silicate. The run-of-mine are averages 1.43 Li2O. Figure 2 of the general Mining Division flow sheet follows the concentration of the Li2O to 5.5% and also lists the various by-products that are sold commercially. The unique properties of lithium have led to many commercial applications, some of these including lubricating greases, ceramics, glasses, glazes, welding fluxes, aluminum reduction cells, dehumidifying and air-conditioning equipment, sanitizers, polymerization catalysts, batteries, and pharmaceuticals. Mineral exploration is a key factor for success in the mining industry. However, exploration best practices are often ignored in small-scale mining. This works presents the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix, a methodology that measures the level of compliance of exploration programs in small-scale mining with the industry best practices. The matrix has been applied to three projects in Brazil: an artisanal gold mine in the state of Pará, a small-scale manganese project in the state of Bahia, and a small-scale manganese project in the state of São Paulo. The application of the matrix resulted in indexes that represent the level of maturity of the exploration program in each project and indicate priority actions for reduction of the geological uncertainty. Therefore, the Tichauer-DeTomi Matrix has shown potential to be a useful tool for assessment of geological uncertainty in small-scale mining. As a risk indicator, it may contribute to promoting investment in small-scale mining and development for communities that depend on this activity around the world.

INTRODUCTION The Washington Metro is a 98 mile rapid transit system that will serve the District of Columbia, southern Maryland, and northern Virginia. The construction work herein described relates to Section B-1 of this system. The contract for this work was awarded by the Owner, The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority, to a joint venture doing business under the name of Ball-Shea-Norair. The partners in this venture were Gordon H. Ball, Inc., Danville, California; J. F. Shea Company, Inc., Walnut Creek, California; and Norair Engineering Corporation, Washington, D. C. The bid price for the project was $33,741,524 with a contract duration of 910 calendar days. Notice to proceed was issued January 5, 1970. The present modified price for the work is $36,866,000 with completion anticipated in July 1974. (About 1,638 days elapsed time.) The work to be done consisted essentially of construction of 3,490 linear feet of cut-and-cover track with side platform, and 600 ft cut-and-cover arch shaped subway stations. Stations are located in Judiciary Square and Eighth & G Street, N. W., areas. Decking of excavation in street areas, maintenance of traffic and utilities, vent and fan shafts, underpinning of court buildings in Judiciary Square and the Smithsonian National Portrait Building, and an electrical substation were included in the contract. Stations were constructed of cast-in-place concrete.

The Otjikoto Gold Mill was commissioned during November–December 2014 as Namibia’s first new gold producer in 30 years. Its operations consist of surface mining with a modern gravity/carbon-in-pulp mill for ore treatment and gold recovery. The initial mill design capacity was 2.5 Mt/a. Its capacity was expanded after nine months of operation to 3.1 Mt/a, and process performance has significantly surpassed design expectations. After startup, the Otjikoto Mill’s throughput and gold recovery ramped up quickly, with both parameters exceeding design after only two months of operation. The robust process performance continued into 2019, with key performance indicators (KPIs) eclipsing design values in almost every aspect of mill operation. The Otjikoto Mill’s gold recovery is exceptionally high, exceeding 98 percent every year following startup, especially considering the low-grade nature of the deposit.

Of the various critics of federal energy and minerals policy we are hearing these days--and they are legion--few make their points more vividly than our fellow SME member and eloquent spokesman for the mineral industry. Mr. Eugene Guccione. In a moment of comparative mellowness. Mr. Guccione recently characterized Washington's time-honored legislative and bureaucratic machinery as a case of "...scientific illiterates asking the incompetents to do the unnecessary." I hope the prevailing industry view of government is not quite that harsh, and yet one cannot deny that government intervention is indeed pressing in on the mineral industry with increasing force. What is happening today in Washington and in state capitols will have enormous impact--both short and long term--on the future of coal and mineral production in the United States. Symptoms of this trend are everywhere. In the first place, there is a sentiment, widely held and still spreading, that the government must become involved-- that no matter what the problem, the solution lies in more government intervention. Free enterprise versus statist, reflex reaction organizations. When it cones to regulation in the resource field, there is too often a tendency to start out by assuming guilt on the part of the mineral industry. This can lead to laws governing mineral recovery that are more punitive than constructive...laws drawn up with little research into the scientific or economic considerations involved.

Introduction and Historical Background The office and mining operations of Pacific Asbestos Corporation are located near Copperopolis, California in the foothills of the Sierras about fifty miles east of Stockton. This is historic country in the heart of the old Mother Lode gold district. Mark Twain's famous story of the jumping frog, written here, is still commemorated in an annual contest in Calaveras County,' and the camp at Poker Flats, described by Bret Harte, was only a few miles from the present mine.2 Joaquin Murrieta, the famous Mexican bandit started his three year reign of terror in this vicinity,3 and Black Bart, the P08 laureate of the stagecoach robbers, held up his first stage at Funk Hill, just three miles north of the mine. His last robbery was at almost the place, on the top of the hill overlooking the Stanislaus River ferry crossing. Although this was his favorite country, and he traveled extensively through it, he was not a credit to his acclaimed profession of Mining Engineer because there is no evidence that he ever recognized the asbestos, and he was finally caught as a consequence of the robbery at the ferry.4 One of the old stagecoach roads crossed the Stanislaus River at the mine site, and the ferry landing may still be seen from the main haul road into the pit. The road itself is partly buried under the rock dumps. In spite of its location and apparently prominent exposure, the first work on the asbestos deposit was not recorded until 1904.5 Development of the present operations was started in 1959 by Jefferson Lake Asbestos Corporation, a subsidiary of Jefferson Lake Sulphur Company. Management control of the company changed hands several times and it was later reorganized under the name of Pacific Asbestos Corporation. In December, 1968, a controlling interest was acquired by H. K. Porter Company, Inc. Figure (1) shows the mill and office buildings as seen from a site near the entry road. The offices are at the left with the mill warehouse in the foreground. The conveyor at left center carrys mine concentrates up the hill from the crusher. In the background are the dry rock storage building and mill tailings piles. Since the beginning of mining operations in 1962, seven and three-quarter million tons of ore and fifteen million tons of waste have been removed from the open pit which now measures about 1400 x 1800 feet at its widest points. The lowest operating level is at an elevation of 726 feet about 325 feet below the original surface. Figure (2) shows the open pit looking toward the west end. The main haul road can be seen along the side of the pit. A shovel is operating at the bottom of the pit while a front end loader on the level above provides ore for blending. In the background are rock dumps for waste stripping. The company markets an annual production of 30-35,000 tons of chrysotile fibre in groups 4 through 7, under the Mother Lode Brand

It is becoming evident that traditional methods of econometric analysis are inadequate in estimating-the long-run supply of minerals. Econometrics is limited to extracting estimates from observations of the theory predicts that the least cost deposits will be exploited first.1 The estimation of parameters from past data then must lead to biased projections of the future. Mining conditions in the future will be worse than in the past and it is the impact of the future conditions on cost that we need to know. In this paper we present a methodology for dealing with this problem. We estimate a "cumulative cost" function that yields the long-run marginal cost of mining as a function of cumulative output produced over time.2 This is relatively easy to do for coal mining in the United States where exploration for new deposits is not a major factor in supply. The first step of the procedure relates cost to the rate of output and to the geological conditions of the mine. The second step combines geological information on remaining deposits with the cost function to yield the cumulative cost function. A central theme of both these steps is the interaction of economics with geology. The best deposits are selected first and in each step of the estimation allowance must be made for this fact. The problem of depletion is part of the general problem of structural change. The change through depletion in the nature of the exploitable mineral stock is only one factor that calls for an analysis sensitive to the changing circumstances of the industry. "Heavy impact. High frequency hammering. Extreme abrasion. The result is a fit-for-purpose steel with tightly controlled performance properties, making it possible for customers to precalculate the expected life time of their components for highly automated and repetitive processes Tailoring steels for the processing route.The same levels of control and predictability must be carried through to the customer’s own manufacturing processes. By ensuring minimal variations in chemical composition, everything from heat treatment and welding to automated machining can be carried out with high consistency. With precisely controlled material properties based on an existing processing route and exact load case, customers are able to minimize their total tool production costs while ensuring optimal performance for their end products. Development of Hybrid SteelBuilding on this experience in the mining industry, Ovako has developed a new steel family, known as Hybrid Steel, designed to meet the demands of high-stress, elevatedtemperature applications where mechanical and fatigue strength are critical. Traditionally, steels for these applications are produced by expensive small-batch processes. Hybrid Steel, however, enables high volume production at a competitive cost.The world of steel has traditionally been divided into clearly separated categories of tool steel, stainless steel and lower alloy engineering steel. This paper justifies its selection, describes charcoal properties, the methods for using charcoal in the pelletizing and shows the results of the in-plant tests.
