Syncrude Canada Ltd. is currently mining over 120 million tons per year of overburden and oil sands to produce 40 million barrels per year of synthetic crude oil. Production increases are planned. This paper reviews the technical and economic assessments of feeder breaker applications in both ore and waste mining which led to an extensive testing and development program and finally to the procurement of full scale production equipment.

"The flotation behaviors of diaspore and three kinds of silicate minerals - kaolinite, illite and pyrophyllite - using an organosilicon cationic surfactant as collector were investigated as functions of reagent concentration and pulp pH. The results show that the organosilicon cationic collector QAS122 is a suitable collector for the flotation of aluminosilicate minerals but has weak collecting ability with regard to diaspore, enabling the flotation separation of diaspore from silicate minerals using QAS122 as collector. The flotation of a bauxite ore was then studied in detail. Finally, a reverse flotation separation process was used to process a low-grade bauxite ore. It was concluded that use of the organosilicon cationic collector is effective. A concentrate with aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, of 9.67 was obtained from natural bauxite ore with A/S of 6.07 at pH of around 11. The Al2O3 recovery rate was 81.72 percent. IntroductionChina has abundant bauxite ore resources, but more than 98 percent of the bauxite ores are the diasporic type, with the characteristics of complex mineral composition, low aluminum oxide (Al2O3) to silicon dioxide (SiO2) mass ratio, or A/S, and difficulty of processing. The gangue minerals in bauxite ores are mainly kaolinite, pyrophyllite and illite, containing titanium and iron impurities (Zong et al., 2008). It is known that high-grade bauxite ore, with A/S greater than 8, can be processed directly by the Bayer process (Papanastassiou et al., 2002; Ma et al., 1996). However, Chinese diasporic ores have been processed mainly by the sintering process, which is environmentally damaging and energy intensive. Increasing the A/S of the diasporic ores using a flotation method is needed (Xia et al., 2010).Froth flotation is one of the most widely used processes to concentrate valuable minerals in beneficiation ores. It is particularly useful for separating finely ground ores from their associated gangue minerals. For diasporic bauxite ores, flotation is applied to obtain high-quality material for the Bayer process by increasing the A/S. Direct flotation has been shown to be an efficient method for the desilicating of diasporic bauxite ore (Wang et al., 2004; Xu et al., 2004), but reverse flotation has more advantages for this purpose, including less collector consumption, less foaming product and less effect on metallurgy (Liu et al., 2007; Hu et al., 2003; Hu, 2003; Luo et al., 2001)."

"SJVN Limited successfully commissioned its Rampur HEP (412 MW) in 2014. The project has been planned to operate in tandem by directly utilizing the Tail Water of SJVN’s prestigious Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station 1500 MW located upstream. The initial filling of voluminous water conductor system of RHEP with 10.50 m diameter, 15 Kilometer long Head Race Tunnel, involved more than 1.5 million m3 of water. The filling operation of such a large diameter tunnel constructed in young folded Himalayas which always offer less ideal sites for tunnelling and their subsequent operations under pressurized conditions is worth sharing with tunnelling fraternity. The paper covers meticulous planning, execution, precautions taken, and performance monitoring during filling process keeping in view the fragile geology, low rock cover zones, shear zones in close vicinity of thickly inhabited areas, squeezing zones, hot water zones encountered during excavation.1.0 RAMPUR HYDRO POWER STATION IN BRIEFRampur Hydroelectric Project (412 MW), is located in Himachal Pradesh (India). This project is a downstream development of Nathpa Jhakri Hydro Power Station (1500 MW) constructed on river Satluj and commissioned during 2003. Both the projects today are now successfully working in tandem. The upstream NJHPS has been constructed on the left bank of the river while the downstream Rampur HPS is located on right bank of the river (Figure-1).The major length of HRT of Rampur project lies on right bank of river before it crosses under the river in its initial reach (Figure-2). The main features of the project are as below:• 10.50 m diameter 15 km long HRT ending in a 155.75 m deep, 38.00 m diameter surge shaft.• 3 steel lined pressure shafts, 5.4 m dia, 211-220m long.• Surface valve house 69 m long x 10.50 m wide x 23 m high housing 3 No. butterfly valves• 3 No. surface penstocks 5.4m dia 368-382m long, bifurcating into six penstocks, each of 3.80 mdia. to feed six generating units of surface power house 158 m long x 24.50 m wide x 48 m high, with Francis turbines each of 68.67 MW capacity."

Scope of the Courier 300 System The fact that reliable on-stream analysis is a prerequisite for effective flotation control is hardly disputed today. Nevertheless, up to now no system has been available that includes all the equipment necessary for successful analysis. However essential an on-stream analyser is in itself, reliable and accurate assaying can only be assured after techniques for sampling, handling the slurries and computing the X-ray data have been developed for the purpose. The Outokumpu Company's Courier 300 System is a complete package that can be installed and handed over with the key. It includes the equipment needed for sampling and handling the slurries. It has been developed from the start to meet industrial demands. Obviously an on-line system must comply with far stricter standards than one designed for a laboratory. Assays are computed by an Outokumpu 316 digital data processor, which is an integral part of the system and controls its entire performance. The computer software is programmed as a standard package, including a highly advanced new model for assay computation. Analysis output is available for a process computer, report typewriter:, and recorders. The package also includes calibration for slurry assays at our pilot installation before delivery. A complete Courier System can analyse up to 4Z slurries and six elements in each slurry. Thanks to its modular design, it can be dimensioned initially to the customer's requirements and is easy to expand later at low cost. Being a mining company itself, Outokumpu has been able to utilize its own long experience in non-ferrous metallurgy - an important factor contributing to the success of the Courier system. "The city of Denver, CO has experienced extreme growth in the past decade, with the population of the city topping more than 700,000 people in 2018. The current storm water drainage system was put in place in the early 1900s and has not been able to keep up with the growth of the city.When it rains north and east of the city, the runoff goes toward the South Platte River. With the dense population and sometimes severe thunderstorms in the summer, the city has experienced significant flooding that not only endangers lives of residents, but some of the storms have caused millions of dollars of property damage.The Platte to Park Hill Project is a $298-million nearterm, four-phase solution to the flooding that includes the Globeville landing outfall; an open drainage project in the Cole neighborhood in north Denver; an area for temporary water detention and another temporary water detention in Park Hill.The largest and most complex phase of the project is the Globeville landing outfall — a $70-million box culvert project that includes a pair of 157-m (515-ft) long, 243-cm (96-in.) diameter storm water tunnels that pass beneath a busy rail yard with 17 tracks for the Union Pacific Railroad (UPRR) and two Regional Transportation District (RTD) commuter rail tracks. The tunnels, which were installed parallel to a pair of existing 243-cm (96-in.) tunnels, were designed by Brierley & Associates as a client of Merrick & Company for the City & County of Denver, and Bradshaw Construction constructed the one-pass tunnels.From the start, it was evident that the tunneling portion of the project would be the most challenging because of the rail yards.“It’s a little bit more complicated because the railroads have such tight restrictions for settlement,” said Rebecca Brock, Brierley’s project manager. “We had a lot of meetings with Union Pacific and RTD to figure out what are prescribed versus tolerable settlements.”“The portion extending beyond the UPRR under the RTD rails was challenging, as RTD is new to tunnel installations under its tracks,” said Lester Bradshaw, president of Bradshaw Construction. “The RTD tracks employed a unique foundation of continuous concrete with integral raised concrete ties on rubber bushings. Minimizing settlement to these tracks was a critical requirement.”"

INTRODUCTION As a set of management practices, "Knowledge Management" (KM) has disappointed many of its early advocates. The core notion behind KM can be summed up in the oft- quoted adage, "If we only knew what we know." KM describes a set of tools, practices, and approaches for using data, information, and expertise-knowledge-resident in an organization to improve the performance of that organization. The idea was incubated, hatched, and grew among some the largest and most successful companies in the world. Some of these companies created "Chief Knowledge Officers." Many more collectively invested billions in a huge range of KM efforts, all designed to use their organizations' information and expertise to innovate, improve margins, sell, or accomplish any of a myriad of sound business goals. Some KM efforts were successful, and many were not.* Today, it is indisputably the case that KM as a named set of practices has fallen out of favor. Why, then, should KM be discussed at a conference on "Things that Actually Work" for plant operators? Because, in many instances, KM has actually worked. The practices that represent KM done right offer significant opportunities for plant operators to achieve real gains, especially in times of resource constraints and in the face of ever-increasing technical and commercial goals. The KM fad is all but over. The KM benefits continue to accrue to those who have applied the lessons learned from that fad, and implemented sound * Fair disclosure: I am not unbiased with respect to the potential impact of KM. A reliable and stable ventilation system is essential to the safe operation of underground mines. The stability of a mine ventilation system becomes extremely critical while responding to a fire incident since an unstable ventilation system will pose a risk of airflow reversal. The reversed airflow could bring the fire contaminants such as toxic gases and smoke unexpectedly to working areas. In the past few years, there has been a growing interest in the study of ventilation network stability using the concept of resistance sensitivity, which is described as an indicator of how the airflow in an airway is reacting to a resistance change of other airways. Several methods of calculating the resistance sensitivity in a mine ventilation network have been carried out by researchers and scholars around the world. However, the proposed methods heavily rely on a vast amount of mine ventilation simulations, which are very time consuming and computer-power intensive, especially for a large-scale mine ventilation network. In this paper, a derivative method calculating the resistance sensitivities with a single mine ventilation simulation has been developed and implemented into a mine fire simulation software, MFIRE. The results from the derivative method were verified against the results from a traditional method. The derivative method has been proven to be reliable and accurate.

Diesel particulate matter (DPM) has been classified as a carcinogen to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer. As a result of its potential carcinogenic nature, DPM exposure is regulated by the Mine Safety and Health Administration. Currently, diesel emissions in the workplace are monitored by collecting the aerosol onto filters, which are then sent to a laboratory for thermal-optical analysis using the NIOSH method 5040. This process can take days or even weeks, and workers can potentially be exposed to excessive levels of DPM before the problem is identified. Moreover, the delay involved in getting the loaded filter to the lab inevitably means the loss of some of the more volatile organic carbon. To remedy this delay, researchers from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health are seeking to develop a field-portable, real-time method for measuring elemental and organic carbons in DPM aerosols. In the current study, the use of mid-infrared spectrometry was investigated. It is believed that mid-infrared spectroscopy is more suitable for use in a real-time field-portable device than thermo-optical analysis methods. This article presents a method for measuring organic carbon (OC) and elemental carbon (EC) in DPM for a broad range of OC/EC ratios. The method has been successfully applied to laboratory-generated and mine samples.

"In Part I, Gibbs’ phase rule was applied to mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams for the Cu-As-S-H2O system. The diagrams were generated using the stoichiometry of enargite as a basis. In this study, the calculations were expanded to cover the stoichiometries of three other Cu-As-S minerals – tennantite, sinnerite and lautite – and compared with enargite. Stability regions within the resulting EH-pH diagrams were found to change with stoichiometry such that a particular mineral would predominate if its stoichiometry was used in the calculation. Solution speciation was also found to vary, with thioarsenate being the best example. This stoichiometric effect helps to explain results reported in the literature and would be difficult to realize if it were not for mass-balanced calculations. IntroductionA comprehensive thermodynamic review has been conducted on the aqueous copper-arsenic-sulfur (Cu- As-S) system (Gow et al., 2014, 2015a, 2016b; Gow, Huang and Young, 2016c). Data on the free energies of more than 100 species were collected from various authors, and thermodynamic databases collated to produce mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams using the thermodynamic equilibrium calculation software STABCAL (Huang, 2014). The full database is listed and discussed in Gow et al. (2015a). Diagrams were generated for enargite and confirmed with Raman spectroscopy using bulk mineral electrodes in order to identify reactions spectroelectrochemically. Theoretical calculations agreed well with the experimental results under alkaline conditions (Gow et al., 2015a), acid conditions (Gow et al., 2014) and alkaline sulfide leaching conditions (Gow et al., 2015b).In the present study, additional mass-balanced EH-pH diagrams were generated by changing the Cu-As-S stoichiometry from enargite (Cu3AsS4) to tennantite (Cu12As4S13), sinnerite (Cu6As4S9) and lautite (CuAsS). Regions for the thermodynamically stable species were shown to change with the four different mineral compositions. Potential leach conditions, both for co-dissolution and selective dissolution techniques, were examined for differences in predominant species according to changing copper-to-arsenic ratios, sulfur compositions and sulfur oxidation states."

Excavation of underground openings results in the redistribution of the in situ stress into the rock adjacent to the opening. Stress redistribution depends on opening geometry, pillar geometry, material properties, possible confinement, and constitutive models describing the behavior of adjacent rock. This paper presents typical pillar stress distributions for elastic and yielding pillars as a function of opening geometry, material properties, and material constitutive models and highlights the differences between them. Stress distributions are compared with empirical strength profiles that have been developed for coal pillars as well as actual pillar geometries documented for stone pillars.

Disposal of mine tailings in "waters of the United States" is presently prohibited even though case studies indicate that the practice may be environmentally viable. To simulate disposal in the natural environment, nine containers of tailings and sediment were instrumented and placed on the ocean floor near Juneau, AK as were ninety-six biosample containers. Pore water concentrations of five metals were determined, and biota populations were characterized for both materials. After 500 days of exposure there were no statistical macro scale differences between tailings and sediment biota populations or Cu, Pb, and Zn pore water concentrations. Tailings released slightly more Fe than sediment, but sediment released significantly more Mn than tailings. Disposal of mine tailings in marine waters may be environmentally safe.

The Atlanta Plane Train project at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport employed the progressive design-build approach. This provided opportunities for collaboration between the design-builder, design engineer, and owner and the implementation of innovative design and construction approaches. The innovations have reduced risks, allowed for adjustments during design to accommodate new challenges, and provided open-book cost and schedule evaluations. The progressive design-build approach has also allowed for pricing of work to occur in phases—capturing the design/construction challenges as the project evolves and when they are more clearly defined. While this has allowed for pricing to be performed with better project understanding and therefore less contingency, the associated time frame for approvals has required careful consideration to avoid impacts to the schedule. This paper discusses the benefits and challenges of the progressive design-build approach.

British Petroleum (BP, 2005), indicates that world reserves for oil to be 1198 billion barrels, for natural gas the equivalent of 1156 billion barrels of oil and for coal the equivalent of 3219 billion barrels of oil. If we take into consideration the mean aver-age annual increase in demand of the last three years for oil, 2.6%, for natural gas, 3.9%, and for coal, 6.6%, then their respective reserves? lifespan are calculated to be 27, 34 and 38 years. Without taking into account their annual increase in demand, lifespan increases to 38, 67 and 161 years respectively. Since zero increase or perpetual increase in energy demands on finite resources is unrealistic the selection of the most suitable energy commodity for power generation rests upon the law of supply and demand of each commodity. This defines its price hence its selection for the production of cheap electricity. When the ratio of supply to demand is less than one, peak production is achieved. Any further increase in demand results in price increase to quench its demand. The Association for Oil and Gas Peak (ASPO) has calculated that when oil demand exceeds 84 million barrels/day, Peak Oil Production will be attained thus prices will start to increase in order to even demand with supply. Correspondingly, Gas Peak Production is expected to take place when demand exceeds 9.1 or 10.2 billion cubic meters/day. Peak Oil production has been calculated to take place in the current year, 2006, while Gas Peak production is estimated to take place between 2020 and 2025 provided that gas will not cover the energy deficit created from the lack of oil otherwise Gas Peak production could arrive as early as 2010. The use of coal for power generation is considered a better alternative than oil and gas if new combustion technologies with an energy efficiency of 43%, Germany, and 47%, Denmark, are adopted. These not only extend the lifespan of coal reserves but reduce also CO2 emissions by 25% and 31%, respectively. In the very near future CO2 sequestration and fixation in deep geological strata will eliminate its emissions thus rendering the use of coal the cheapest feedstock for power generation.

Pyrrhotite (FeS1+x ,0<x<0.15) is an iron sulfide which is considered to be a pest in carbon-in-pulp/ leach (CIP/L) gold processing [l].The perceived influence of pyrrhotite on gold processing by CIP/L is a competing consumption of 02 and CN­as the pyrrhotite dissolves by oxidation [1,2]. The few studies of the oxidation chemistry, kinetics and mechanism of the oxidation ofpyrrhotite are reviewed in detail elsewhere [3].There is broad agreement that the surface of pyrrhotite is very rapidly oxidized to form a thin (e.g. 10 nm) ferric hydroxy-oxide layer which overlays an iron-deficient sulfide lattice covering the original pyrrhotite. Michiquillay is a major copper deposit situated about 70 km (44 miles) northeast of Cajamarca in northern Peru (Fig. 1). It occurs largely in quartz monzonite in a shatter zone produced by the intersection of northwest- and northeast-trending fault systems. The geology is described by Hollister and Sirvas (1974). The ore deposit was drilled in 1963-1964 by Asarco, with results indicating a resource of 575 Mt (634 million st) averaging 0.72% Cu-0.03% Mo. A decision to bring the project to production has been deferred because world capacity to produce copper has been more than adequate to serve world requirements since 1964. The chain of events leading to the discovery of Michiquillay was set in motion by a decision by the management responsible for the Chilete mine to undertake an investigation of the surrounding area for a possible supplementary source of mill feed to bolster its decreasing lead-zinc reserves. Chilete, located 100 km (62 miles) inland from Pacasmayo, is the most northerly, important mining project in Peru, and little was known of the mineral potential north and east of that point. Relatively unimpressive reports of Colonial silver mining had attracted little investigation, and little was known of the regional geology. One study by Benavides (1956) had been made of the Cretaceous in the region of Cajamarca.

The TESCAN Integrated Mineral Analyzer (TIMA), an automated mineralogy system, enables fast and quantitative mineral analyses of rocks, ores, concentrates, tailings, leach residues or smelter products. It combines BSE and EDX analysis for identification and measurement of mineral concentrations, particle size distribution, and liberation/locking parameters. In addition, it can provide bright particle searches for PGM, gold-silver ores, and/or REE. With the newly developed Automated Loading System (AutoLoader), the TIMA has become the world?s first automated mineral analyzer which permits robust, continuous and unattended sample loading. With the AutoLoader (robotics) system, the TIMA has emerged as a powerful plant support instrument. It increases the sample throughput, minimizes manual labor and enables 24/7 operations. As such, it can be used in daily, continuous mineralogy for mine geology/ore control, concentrators, leach operations, and smelter support. It will also increase the capabilities of technical service centers for mining companies, commercial laboratories, large drilling programs or pilot test campaigns. In combination with a highly automated sample preparation lab (sizing, potting and polishing), TIMA technology can establish high-throughput and fast-turnaround automated mineralogy lab modules for mine-site production support.

Old mine workings are found throughout the Western United Sates on lands administered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management, U.S. Forest Service and private lands. Some of these mine workings date back to the late 1800s. There may be as many as 100,000 sites on lands administered by the National Park Service, U.S. Forest Service and Bureau of Land Management. The U.S. Department of the Interior has worked with the U.S. Geological Survey, the U.S. Forest Service, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, and western state governments to identify and prioritize these sites on Bureau of Land Management, National Park Service and U.S. Forest Service administered lands. This presentation will discuss the accomplishments we have made to date to clean up inactive and abandoned mine sites, focusing primarily on lands administered by the Bureau of Land Management.

Basic laboratory tests initiated the. Rock Mechanics program. The stress-strain curve, modulus of elasticity, Poisson&apos;s ratio, the uniaxial rock strengths, Mohr&apos;s envelope, the stress at failure, and creep were investigated. A series of underground problems were then approached using this information; and various field measuring devices, most of which were developed by the Bureau of Mines. Initially, stress concentrations near mine openings were evaluated using the stress relief technique. This required an accurate determination of the pre-mining stress field. Later, stress concentrations associated with the cave line .sere studied. After about thirty stress reliefs over an appropriate time interval the effects of one type of mining could be compared against another. The microseismic technique was used to investigate a possible application of warning devices near the cave line. A study of mane reorientation was made Problems related to the shape and size of pillars and barriers were studied. Partial extraction mining systems were evaluated. The effectiveness of roof bolting patterns were examined. Control of roof stresses was attempted. A new system of mining in heavy ground has been developed using the information secured in the Rock Mechanics program without this system, mining in more than one instance would Nave been next to impossible. Indeed; from this one discovery alone, the Rock Mechanics program has paid off in improved safety as well as in dollars.

The Minera Yanacocha operation presents various operating challenges, due to the complex structure of several heaps interconnected with ponds and gold recovery plants. A comprehensive process model has been developed in order to better understand the effects of certain operating parameters on issues such as water usage and inventory. An integral component of the water/mass balance of the process is a model of each heap that describes the flow and chemical behavior based on the individual characteristics of the heap. A computational fluid dynamic (CFD) software framework is used to model the individual heaps. The structure, calibration and validation of the model are described. Several examples demonstrating application of the process heap model are presented for the La Quinua heap. The effects of loss of solution flow to the heap (i.e., pump failure), increased cyanide levels in applied solutions and higher copper head grades on the process operation and balance are investigated with model simulations and compared to the baseline operating conditions. An example of estimating gold production and inventory based on projected heap loading plans is provided.
