Atlas Dewatering was contracted to install and maintain a groundwater control system for the new Bessarion Subway Station and the Tail Track Structure on the Toronto Transit Commission’s new Sheppard Subway Line. Atlas met the challenges presented by the project by closely reviewing the contract documentation provided by the Program Geotechnical Consultant, Golder Associates and by working with the general contractors, Bondfield Construction Company and PCL Constructors Eastern, inc., throughout the duration of both projects. In addition to concerns about soil loss, excessive settlement and seepage, the consultant was concerned about spreading hydrocarbon-contaminated groundwater between the two aquifers present at the Bessarion Station site. By installing a system of multi-level vacuum eductor wells around the perimeter of the excavation, Atlas was not only able to provide a dry excavation for construction, but, due to a unique well design was also able to prevent cross-contamination of the aquifers.

Consistent increase has been the mark of North American potassium (K) consumption. In 23 of the last 25 years there was upward progress The pace of usage has quickened in the past three or four years This, together with a predicted accelerated future demand, has created unprecedented interest -and activity in the potash industry. Potassium enjoyed a ninefold increase in consumption from 1940 to the present time in North America (Figure 1). Since 1950, it increased from just over a million tons of potash (K20) annually to nearly three million tons in 1964. World-wide usage exclusive of mainland China is now about 10 million metric tons. Some predictions call for another doubling in consumption in the next 10 to 15 years, About 20 percent of the four million tons of K20 produced in North America is now exported overseas and this percentage is likely to increase in the years ahead. Ten years ago, exports represented only 3-1/2 percent of total K2O production from this continent.

Although there was a significant improvement in the world economy, recovery in the iron and steel industry followed its traditional pattern and lagged the general economic recovery in 1983. World crude steel production increased from 645 Mt (711 million st) in 1982 to 664 Mt (732 million st) in 1983, an increase of less than 3%. Domestic iron and steel production showed a modest increase over 1982. Weekly raw steel pro¬duction levels ranged between 1.5 and 1.75 Mt (1.6 and 1.9 million st) for the last 10 months of 1983, compared with less than 1.25 Mt (1.4 million st) for the last half of 1982. The peak was 2.5 Mt (2.7 million per st) per week in 1978-79. This how level of steel operations kept most pelletizing and sintering operations at curtailed production levels. Extended shut-downs of pellet plants were also common. Pressure by management to reduce operating costs has continued with an increasing emphasis on maintaining quality and efficient unit productivity. With the extended decline, there have been significant personnel reductions in both operating and headquarters staffs. Many companies are anticipating a long-term how growth period in the iron and steel sector. Pelletizing Domestic pellet production showed a slight increase last year to about 34 Mt (38 million st), less than 50% of total capacity. What is indicative of the inevitable is the announced intention to chose down facilities, such as US Steel Corp.'s Atlantic City ore operations pellet plant at Lander, WY, and the recent aborted move by US Steel to purchase National Steel with the apparent intent to chose the National pellet plant in Keewatin, MN. There is excess domestic pellet capacity that will not be needed. The question is what form attrition will take. South American pellets can be brought into the Chicago area at a cost competitive with Great Lakes plants. This raises the possibility that imported pellets can, in fact, displace domestic pellets at almost any US steel plant. The need to re duce total production costs at domestic pelletizing plants is crucial. Efforts to reduce fuel costs for pelletizing have focused on re placing natural gas or fuel oil with coal. More recently, petroleum coke has become available at an attractive cost, but systems must cope with its higher sulfur con tent, which limits its potential The direct firing of grate-kiln systems with pulverized coal hay been fully proven. The use of solic fuel in the straight-grate process however, is still being developer and no straight-grate system i running on solid fuel alone. The further development o coal-water slurry systems may provide a suitable fuel for both systems. It would appear, how ever, that the same ash quality restriction would hold for coal water systems as for direct-firin systems. So, the choice is based of the relative cost and convenience of a wet-grinding system with additives, compared with a dry-grind direct-fired unit. The high-temperature (two stage) heat recuperation system installed at US Steel's Minnta plant (Step III) has provided the fuel savings anticipated, any modification of additional in durating lines is planned. Other operators are hooking at similar heat recuperation improvement. Another area of potential cost savings has been in the reduction of bentonite requirements. A CCI's Tihden plant, major improvements have been made in this area. Progressive bentonit reductions were achieved over several years from the 8- to 9-kg (16- to 18-lb per st) range to the 5-k (12-1b) level by progressive moisture reductions and chose attention to operating practice. Many deep well waste disposal. operations have adopted the technology of the petroleum industry but fail to make full use of the knowledge and experience upon which this technology is based. Inexperience in subsurface exploration commonly leads industrial personnel to an over simplified understanding of the complex subsurface rock/fluid environment and overly optimistic "degree of exploration /adequacy of knowledge" ratios. Several fundamental differences between disposal and petroleum production are discussed. In particular, the evolution of understanding of the subsurface in relation to degree of exploration is demonstrated by summarized case histories of such other forms of subsurface fluid exploitation as oil pro¬duction and underground gas storage, tracing subsurface interpretations from the initial exploratory concept to that of fullest development. Evolutionary changes in interpretation and their significance as applied to deep well disposal are stressed.

The goal of the project reported in this paper was to make recommendations for changes in roof bolting procedures and bolter design that would reduce roof bolter accident rates. To that end the project identified the major hazards associated with each task a roof bolter operator per-forms, normalized task accident frequencies. by the time spent on each task, reviewed equipment design features and operating procedures related to the identified hazards and developed recommendations for equipment and procedural changes that would reduce, if not eliminate, the hazards. This paper discusses the challenges to complete the construction of two large underground Metro stations and connecting tunnels in the Tren Urbano system. The completion work includes the installation of specialized mechanical and electrical systems, extensive architectural finishing as well as coordination with systemwide power and controls installed by others. A unique feature of this project was the simultaneous design and construction of the structural/civil/architectural/mechanical/electrical works by KKZ separately from the power and control systems under the management of the Owner, its consultants and other contractors. Completion of this project comes after almost six years of continuous design and construction in a dense urban environment. The project was confronted by many challenges that could only be met with the combined efforts of the Joint Venture team in close cooperation with the Owner and its System wide Contractor. This paper will also address many of the major design and construction changes implemented to suit the Owner’s requirements.

New methods and techniques in the field of hydrogeology are being developed constantly. One of these advances has been brought about through the use of inexpensive microcomputers. The formulas used in this paper and developed by Theis, Jacob, Glover, Keck, and Dupuit are not new. The methods by which these formulas can be solved are now available to all who wish to get faster, less expensive, and more reliable answers. The report on cut and cover construction as assembled by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development covered 17 different countries based on a total of just under 400 individual replies of which about 30% of the replies were from the United States. In general, the review of replies to the questionnaire led to the impression that cut and cover construction is a very inadequate method which needed many improvements. This unfavorable judgment, however, resulted in the manner in which questions were asked rather than in the method itself, It can be concluded that the cut and cover construction method has proved itself as an excellent method and that it has reached a high degree of technological perfection, but inadequacies stilt exist, and for purposes of complete evaluation, comparisons with mining tunnelling methods should be carried out. The principal problem in cut and cover construction is the interaction during construction between the construction process and the existing use of the surface and subsurface environment. The greatest impediments to cut and cover construction have little to do with the physical works being constructed, but more with creating a site in which the work can be performed. Utility relocation, traffice maintenance, and protection of existing structures are major problems for the construction contractor, and too frequently receive insufficient attention in preconstruction planning and design. The use of more productive mining equipment, the tendency to longer development and the advent of new mining methods have introduced new challenges to the ventilation practitioner in Western Australia. These new and more productive mining methods have presented specific ventilation problems, that if not properly addressed, present additional hazards to miners. Factors influencing the increased hazards are larger diesel units, the use of series ventilation systems and an increasing incidences of long (single entry) development and production headings where miners could be trapped in a fire emergency. This paper discusses these new ventilation safety challenges, how they have been and are being addressed, and the legislation changes that take cognisance of technological developments.

State and federal regulations require that surface mine overburden be investigated in advance of mining for naturally occurring earth materials that are detrimental to animal and plant life or to uses of water. Proper identification of these toxic materials is necessary to permit development of environmentally sound reclamation programs. Intensified use of present laboratory methods to meet anticipated testing demands would be both costly and time consuming. This paper discusses the desirability of and general requirements for a geophysical system capable of locating toxic zones in the overburden of surface mineable lands of the Northern Great Plains Coal Province. The paper (1) identifies the types and character of naturally occurring overburden substances that must be investigated in advance of mining, (2) discusses the economic justification for development of a geophysical system to replace or to complement conventional laboratory test methods, and (3) discusses the potential applicability of downhole geophysical methods to overburden analysis.

A pilot plant was constructed and operated to investigate the column flotation of 20 x 200 mesh North Carolina phosphate ore, using high throughput, high solids operating conditions developed at the NCSU Minerals Research Laboratory. Flotation was performed at 45% solids in a 9.5 cm (3.75 in.) diameter by 2.26 m (7.4 ft.) tall column at throughputs of 19.1 t/hr/m2 (2.0 stph/ft2) and 31.7 t/hr/m2 (3.3 stph/ft2). Recoveries in excess of 98% of the phosphate value were obtained at the lower throughput -- while obtaining concentrate grades containing over 28% P205 (61.2% BPL) at that recovery. Recoveries of about 95% of the phosphate value were obtained at the higher throughput, while making a concentrate averaging 27.6% P209 (60.3% BPL). In addition, a better understanding of the variables governing the column flotation of coarse nonmetallic minerals was gained. Low air flow rates adversely affected concentrate grade at the lower throughput. At the higher throughput, phosphate recovery decreased at an elevated air flow rate. An unexpected result of the study was the effect that frother type had upon phosphate metallurgy. Use of Nottingham Econofroth 925 provided better flotation selectivity than American Cyanamid F-65 at the low throughput. This is significant since the high' throughput tests were conducted with F-65 exclusively. It is reasonable to expect further improvement in high throughput performance when the optimal frother type and dosage are determined.

This paper describes uses of sodium sulfide in the flotation of oxide and sulfide minerals of copper, lead, and zinc. The activation and depression effects of sodium sulfide are of particular importance because of their applications with oxidized lead and copper ores. In spite of its industrial importance; however, the nature of the heterogenious reactions between sulfide ions in solution and the surface of oxidized minerals has not been fully understood. Hence, proposed mechanisms of the sulfide action in flotation, methods of measuring and monitoring of sodium sulfide in flotation pulps, and variables influencing the sulfide addition are analyzed. A review of recent studies shows that sodium sulfide addition to flotation pulps can be monitored and hence the optimum dosage controlled using the platinum and/or sulfide specific ion electrodes. The use of these electrodes for improved reproducibility of bench-scale experimental data and plant implementation of laboratory results is described.

Geochemical studies were under- taken in the Breckenridge mining district to test the effectiveness of soil and rock-chip samples in high- lighting known mineralization in the district, and in locating sites of possible porphyry-type mineralization, if such mineralization is present in the area. Soil sampling can be done more quickly and more cheaply, but it does not provide a direct site- specific sample of mineralized rock. In well-developed soils, supergene effects may mask and/or displace primary hypogene effects; and even in places where the soils are poorly- developed, as in the Breckenridge district, the masking effects may be felt. Soil anomalies, if present, likely will be of lower amplitude and more diffuse (widespread) than corresponding rock-chip anomalies. On the other hand, detailed rock-chip surveys are more time-consuming and expensive, even though they yield direct geologic information in addition to the chemical data. The goals of the combined soil and rock-chip programs were (1) to com- pare the data from the two; and (2) test the effectiveness in identifying significant chemical anomalies with respect to the geology of the district, as it is presently understood.

Like so many installations of its type approaching middle age, the ore processing and shipping facilities in Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela, have taken a lot of twists and turns in their lifetime. The object of this paper is to lead you through these twists and turns and some of the reasoning for them. The need for additional sources of iron are in the United States became evident during the time of the second world war. An exploration team from U. S. Steel located further high quality direct shipping iron are in commercial quantities near Ciudad Bolivar, Venezuela in 1947. Basic decisions were made to develop these reserves for export via the Orinoco River through a new shipping port to be built at the confluence of the Orinoco and Caroni Rivers. The basic concept was for the ore to be loaded directly to ocean going vessels. This was something of a gamble since the basic economics depended upon successfully opening up the main channel of the Orinoco River to deepwater vessels, and the Bethlehem Steel mine in the same area was already working with shallow draft river boats and a transfer station on the coast. Always, the basic philosophy has tended to be to plan with expansion in mind. The original conveyor systems were 1.52 m (60 inches) wide with 200 idlers, whereas 1.07 m (42 inches) or 1.22 m (48 inches) wide conveyors could have carried any production foreseen at the time of installation. Stockpiles have been located and designed with room for expansion. Basic designs have had dotted line future expansion blocked in.

"Standing support is often used in conjunction with underground retreat mining. Knowledge of the load-displacement behavior of standing support and loading induced by the mine opening is critical to proper support selection. The NIOSH STOP database contains load-displacement laboratory test data for most commonly used standing supports. Hydraulic load cells currently used to measure in-situ loading of standing supports have exhibited leakage under load, producing irregularities within the dataset. An improved hydraulic load cell eliminates leakage and produces more consistent data.INTRODUCTIONA hydraulic load cell, more commonly known as a flat jack or JackPack, is a device installed to determine the loading characteristics of the roof-to-floor supports. These standing or roof-to-floor supports include, but are not limited to pumpable cribs, cans, wooden cribs (4-point, 9-point, etc.), metal props, wood timbers, concrete donut cribs, and other variations of these standing supports.Flat jack devices have been used previously to determine the loading of such roof to floor supports. The most commonly used load cell for standing supports is based on a design intended for pre-stressing standing supports, not load measurement. Preloading helps to keep the supports, such as timbers props and cribs, in place during the dynamic loading associated with blasting (Barczak and Tadolini, 2004).Flat Jacks are manufactured in various shapes and sizes depending on the application; common shapes are square and round that are 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) thick when collapsed, as shown in Figure 1. These load cells are produced in South Africa and can be formed into several different shapes depending on the application (Barczak, 2003). The sheet metal that makes up the bladder is comprised of 19-gauge or 1.11 mm (0.04 inch) thickness; the top and bottom pieces of sheet metal are resistance-seam welded around the perimeter. There are two different ports installed on one of the bladder skin corners of the flat jacks; these ports allow fluid to fill the unit, and the other port has a relief valve. The fill port is comprised of a check valve. The pressure relief valve is located in the second port; preset to 1,724 kPa (250 psi), the pressure relief valve keeps the load cell from bursting. Bursting of these load cells typically causes a small tear in the metal skin allowing the fluid to leak out without a large catastrophic failure.The effective inflation range of these load cells is between 25.4 mm (1.0 inch) to 254.0 mm (10.0 inches) thick. Different types of fluids can inflate these load cells but the most common and easily accessible fluid for testing applications is water. Water pressure from the mine supply line can inflate these load cells to the desired load. Depending on the pre-stressing requirements, a pneumatic powered pump, hydraulic pump, or hand pump may be required to inflate the load cells."

Injecting water under pressure to wet the coalbed in advance of mining reduces mining-generated respirable dust. Owing to economic and geological barriers, water infusion for longwall dust control in the United States is currently limited to the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed in Virginia. Water is pumped into the coalbed through underground boreholes drilled horizontally from the headgate toward the tailgate side of retreat longwall panels. This paper theorizes that the barriers to widespread utilization of water infusion for longwall dust control could be overcome by long-duration, low-pressure water infusion through vertical gob gas boreholes. Currently, 43% of the 72longwall mines in the United States employ vertical gob gas boreholes. Computer coalbed reservoir simulation suggests that one vertical surface borehole could infuse the same longwall panel area as four horizontal boreholes in the current water infusion system for longwall dust control in the Pocahontas No.3 Coalbed.

Watertightness is of central importance in hydraulic and underground structures but has always been associated with a risk, as demonstrated by the very high impact that water inflows have on the damage of linings and infrastructure (Howard, 1991; Sandrone and Labiouse, 2011). Concrete is vulnerable to groundwater and chemical contaminants in the soil. These can leach into the pores and cracks of the concrete and degrade its integrity, causing spalling and corroding the reinforcing steel. Moisture migrating into the building can also degrade structural elements over time and lead to mold and other hazards to occupants’ health. In this connection, the demands placed on the setup and detailed design of the seal depending on the negative influence by water on the one hand and on the other hand on the function of a construction in view to its watertightness classification. Thus, the reliable functioning of a seal is of particular significance in the case of traffic tunnels, which are not easily accessible for all subsequent repairs after the construction in seepage water and especially when located in a pressure water zone (risk–cost assessment). Requirements for the long-term efficiency and quality of underground structures have increased in recent decades. Today, the standard lifetime requirement for an underground infrastructure project is 100 to 120 years and, in some cases, even higher. This calls for high increased attention to the durability of the whole structure and of each individual element. Standards, which started as application guidelines given by the manufacturers, are available in the market since the 1980s and are constantly adapted to the current developments in various technical committees. Differentiations are made between: Manufactures application guidelines, case studies or published articles Test standards for the laboratory to guideline the testing procedures (air temperature, type of test equipment, dimensions, test speed, test duration, concentration, type of liquids, monitoring, tolerances, interpretation of results, documentation, etc.), developed by committees based on material and laboratory experts Application standards, which include test standards but also the related minimum performance requirements (values) for material, processing, and quality assurance (practical tolerances), developed by committees based on a wide range of experts (e.g., designers, construction companies, applicators, manufactures, owners, test institutes, quality engineers) and therefore also based on a wide field of experience, different views and up-dated case studies. The Alpine-Himalayan system, the only major active tectonic belt mainly exposed in a continental mass, is of increasing interest to exploration geologists as well as to theoreticians. Answers to the broader problems of plate tectonics are being sought in this intricate system where the geosynclinal concept was born and where the geotectonic cycle was first applied to metallogeny. The search is all the more intense because it involves scientists from more than a dozen countries with a stimulating variety in perspective. The international Geodynamics Project has allocated the Alpine-Himalayan system to two separate study groups with one directing its attention to the Alpine-Mediterranean region and the other giving consideration to the Himalayan region. This geographic division is accepted in this paper, with remarks being confined to the former and to the west of boundary zone between the European-Asian and the Southeast Asian plates as envisioned by Dewey and Bird (1970). The region is well-mapped in some parts and it includes some of the most intensely-studied geology, most classic mines, and newest orebody discoveries. Within the region, an Alpine-age copper-molybdenum metallogenic belt extends from Rumania to Pakistan. The belt can be considered in terms of plate tectonics, and there is the possibility of using plate tectonics concepts in exploration.

One need be neither an historian nor technologist to recognize that activi¬ties related to the conversion of coal to other usable energy forms have been active for nearly fifty years. The degree of such activity and its evolution to significant commercial proportions has, however, fluctuated widely with world circumstance. For the past decade there has existed both a consistent technology evolution effort in classic R & D proportions, and a mainstream commercial acti¬vity but in rather modest proportions when viewed from the vantage point of world energy needs. But the chain of events wherein it became increasingly obvious that we were in energy trouble irrespective of world politics, spurred alternative energy source activities in the fossil fuels areas. The oil embargo of 1973-1974 made the obvious even more so and provided additional emphasis for the need of such alternatives. Yet the preponderance of these added expenditures and activities (with one notable exception which is the subject of this discussion) has been focused on the intended identification of the best or ultimate process by means of analytical and modest empirical means, whereas our circumstance dictates a bold, higher-risk effort to prove the viability of coal conversion as an industry on a real-time, real-size, real-economics basis. With such proof on hand, industry demands in all related areas will provide the stimulus, motivation and environment for all processes. There is both need and room for many who will compete for a meaningful segment of this new industry which can grow at a rate never seen before in our growth history. The single program in the world today oriented specifically toward the goal of proof of industry viability is the Energy Research and Development Administration's CBF (clean boiler fuels) Program for which COALCON is proud to be the prime contractor.

DC Water’s Clean Rivers (DCCR) program involves the construction of approximately 29 km (18 mi) of CSO tunnels in Potomac Group soils in the Washington DC area. Soils include an upper predominantly over-consolidated fine grained plastic material facies (P/A) and lower predominantly coarsegrained facies (PTX). As earth pressure balance (EPB) tunnel boring machines (TBMs) are mainly used in such soils, the correct approach to soil conditioning can make a considerable difference in TBM performance. Soil conditioning laboratory tests are often completed during the planning phase prior to TBM excavation to develop a baseline for soil conditioning, reduce risks, minimize costs, and improve performance. However, only a few basic tests are standardized to date, and conditioning regimes are fine-tuned during the mining phase. The paper illustrates the effort carried out to identify the correct soil conditioning regime for both PA and PTX facies to improve TBM overall performance and reduce ground movement during the excavation of the Northeast Boundary Tunnel (NEBT) in Washington DC.
