Longwall face ventilation is an important component of the overall coal mine ventilation system. Increased production rates due to higher-capacity mining equipment tend to also increase methane emission rates from the coal face, which must be diluted by the face ventilation. Increases in panel length, with some mines exceeding 6,100 m (20,000 ft), and panel width provide additional challenges to face ventilation designs. To assess the effectiveness of current face ventilation practices at a study site, a face monitoring study with continuous monitoring of methane concentrations and automated recording of longwall shearer activity was combined with a tracer gas test on a longwall face. The study was conducted at a U.S. longwall mine operating in a thick, bituminous coal seam and using a U-type, bleederless ventilation system. Multiple gob gas ventholes were located near the longwall face. These boreholes had some unusual design concepts, including a system of manifolds to modify borehole vacuum and flow and completion depths close to the horizon of the mined coalbed that enabled direct communication with the mine atmosphere. The mine operator also had the capacity to inject nitrogen into the longwall gob, which occurred during the monitoring study. The results show that emission rates on the longwall face showed a very limited increase in methane concentrations from headgate to tailgate despite the occurrence of methane delays during monitoring. Average face air velocities were 3.03 m/s (596 fpm) at shield 57 and 2.20 m/s (433 fpm) at shield 165. The time required for the sulfur hexafluoride (SF6 ) peak to occur at each monitoring location has been interpreted as being representative of the movement of the tracer slug. The rate of movement of the slug was much slower in reaching the first monitoring location at shield 57 compared with the other face locations. This lower rate of movement, compared with the main face ventilation, is thought to be the product of a flow path within and behind the shields that is moving in the general direction of the headgate to the tailgate. Barometric pressure variations were pronounced over the course of the study and varied on a diurnal basis.

"A high altitude review of the state of the mining industry provided by a study of multifactor productivity shows a continuation of lower output year on year for the capital and labor inputs applied. The story is sadly similar for both U.S. mining and the Australian mining sector. In fact, according to PwC analysts, the world’s mining equipment productivity has declined 20 percent during the past seven years (Lumley, 2014). Although the reasons for the continuing decline in mining productivity are varied, the need for improvement is clear.The world’s mining industry fleet of more than 400 large draglines moves billions of tons of overburden and ore (phosphate, limestone, etc.) annually. This discussion will review a few of the tools available for improved productivity in dragline operations.Benchmarking equipment performance exposes the possibilitiesIn the September 2013 Mining Engineering cover story Graham Lumley and R. Adsero suggested that analyzing best practice equipment performance from an industrywide database for specific equipment performance improvement goals would be beneficial (Adsero, 2013). Benchmarking equipment performance by normalizing differences and then comparing specific measures of performance will provide a road map to improvement for those following the leaders. For those already performing at best practice levels, a benchmark confirms and bolsters what has already been achieved. As described in the SME February 2014 paper by this author, best practice is the average of the top 10 percent in annual output. Filling performance gaps identified by a comparison to best practice by investigating the details of the why and taking action to change, makes all the difference. This is true for all major mining equipment. Given the large gap between average performance and best practice performance most mining operations can benefit. Best practice performance provides a view of what is possible to the 90 percent majority of mining operations that are performing below the top 10 percent.For dragline mining operations, identifying specific characteristics and practices of leading dragline performance will provide a reference for comparison."

This paper presents the details of the Bad Bergzabern tunnel project. This tunnel is the main part of the B427 federal road bypass, intended to improve the regional traffic infrastructure and to reduce the traffic load in the historic city centre of the health resort Bad Bergzabern. Located in the south-western part of Germany, the project area is situated at the eastern margin of the so-called Palatinate Forest, a low mountain region of mainly triassic sediments with a complex and variable geological history. The German federal government, represented by the office of mobility of Rhineland- Palatinate, awarded the contract to BeMo Tunnelling, a specialized Tunnelling company with a long history of innovation and success in NATM tunnelling. The contract includes the construction of two separate tubes with a length of approximately 1,44 km (0.9 mi)—the road (main) tunnel with a cross section of 101 m2 (1,090 sq ft) and a parallel rescue tunnel with a cross section of ca. 23 m2 (250 sq ft.) Both are connected by six cross passages. Tunnels and cross passages are excavated according to the principles of the New Austrian Tunnelling Method (NATM). Due to BeMo Tunnelling’s technical expertise and capabilities, the project team was able to engineer a speed-up concept that saves money and time for the construction team and client. This paper presents the innovative approach BeMo Tunnelling made to optimize the execution of the tunnelling works and the challenges the project team is facing with regard to a complicated geological situation, countermeasures against an increasing effect of climate change and volatile prices for construction materials.

If the past is the key to the future, we will have ?tough? times maintaining Industrial Mineral reserves we have and proving new reserves around our plants and in new locations. The tough times will come from resources being more difficult to find, more hoops to go thru to make them Proven or Probable reserves. As always, Industrial Minerals require competitive quality, location, and costs. Since in most cases the market has suppliers, you will have to take away customers from their present supplier. This may take years or not happen even with lower cost higher quality raw materials. To determine the finished cost for a new deposit you need to design, determine capital costs, and operating costs for a new plant . Stripping, mining, hauling, processing, and transportation costs are part of the equation. After satisfying that your costs are in line you will need to do production tests to make sure the process works on the ore. You may want to complete permitting before purchasing the property. If you are new in the business you will have to prove you can deliver the right quality, the right quantity, on time consistently year after year at lower cost to take away a customer. Without being in the market this will be hard. The cut off grades to enter a market may be much lower than sale indicates because a competitor often lowers the price to keep you out of the market. We have many more items to check before the new deposits can be put on reserves. Our old reserves will require drilling to check for new products and prove that they do not contain items that would make them unusable for our product line or cause permitting problems. Archeological checks, wetlands, more water discharge testing, county zoning, and endangered species are among many items that have been added to mine permits. There will be more. A 4-6 page mining permit becomes 30-300 pages and consists of 5-15 permits, any of which might be a fatal stumbling block. It is not guaranteed that we can mine what we have on reserves. We may fight and lose. Oil-Dri?s loss in Reno and LaPort?s in England are examples where permitting failed. The NOx, sulfur, and carbon problems are just starting. Dioxin is in the background requiring monitoring on food products to Europe. What other anions, cations, endangered species, and land types are going to be problems in the future are guesses now. What new products are we going to have to test for and cause out of balance reserves? If there are none we probably won?t be here. We are competing for land use with ?Endangered Species?, wetlands, farming, forestry, cities, roads, and hunting. We?ve mined the best quality, low overburden, easiest to mine and process raw materials. The price of land and taxes are increasing. Old royalties are 2-3 times the present acre value instead of 8-10 times the property value when leased. Land taxes are up. It was and is best that we get the land in Fee Simple Title. This isn?t always possible. However, plants are closing and people have overlooked, made mistakes in drilling or interpretation of deposits. These may be opportunities. China is eating up high quality ?Industrial Minerals ?which have caused prices to rise. We may need to change our cutoffs? in terms of smaller pit sizes and higher overburden ratios. This is money in the bank. Overburden ratios and other items increasing cutoff costs need to be rethought. Suddenly doubling cutoff ratios for overburden and decreasing pit sizes are good alternatives to looking elsewhere where we might not be able to mine for a number of reasons. The higher prices make them competitive, especially when a competitor goes out of business. However, our low overburden ratios and short hauls around our plants are not safe from new roads, condemnation by county or city governments (N. J.), zoning changes (Reno, FL., CA, and environmental regulation changes (Buffers GA, MS). New roads ?Interstates? can take reserves, increase hauling distances and reduce tons per load. Let?s combine the Refractories, fullers earth, and bentonite industries and use the last 40 years as a guide to the future looking for problems and opportunities. Some or most of the following will apply to other minerals. WHERE DO WE LOOK? First, on our own properties, those next to our properties and on properties near our competitor?s plants. Where the profit margin has increased, the distance from the plant and thickness of overburden we can use is increased. The thickness of clay is decreased. For new locations we pick the ideal location and look at deposits and closed or open operations in ever increasing distances away from that location. We need to be aware of: 1. Increased transportation costs a. Access to Roads -Backhauls b. Haul with doubles and triples c. Railroads - Loading on sidings - Ability to get switches - Cars/backhauls versus rates 2. Cost of building a new plant 3. Cost of infrastructure 4. Cost of repair or new equipment when purchasing an operating or shutdown plant. 5. Local, state, and federal mine and environmental permitting. When exploring around an established operation expect that property acquisition, drilling, mining, stripping, and hauling costs will be greater due to them having second, third, or even fourth the pick of the deposits. I found this in New Jersey looking for refractories and around Quincy, Florida looking for attapulgite. You may be able to get some better properties because the operating company has angered some land owners, their drillers missed the clay, or the property wasn?t available when they were actively exploring for reserves. Wide variation in the nature of the coal seams and the surrounding rock mass of the Indian coalfields and very little information about the associated stress fields were observed to be the major hurdles in the straight forward application of a continuous miner (CM) based mechanised depillaring approach. Due to various techno-economic reasons, a considerably large number of coal seams have been developed and are standing on pillars in India. The development of pillars is done as per Indian coal mines regulation, which results in pillars of relatively large size. In fact, the large size of the pillars provides stiff natural support to control caving of the massive overlying strata. However, the size of these pillars is not conducive for the single pass pillar stripping technique and, therefore, there is a need for pillar splitting before pillar extraction/retreating. Splitting of the pillar may reduce the competency/stiffness of the pillar, which creates a chance of overriding during final extraction below a massive roof stratum. This paper first discusses the existing coal mining scenario in India followed by a brief presentation of geo-technical details of pillar extraction at the three sites where a CM has been introduced for depillaring/pillar retreating in the country to date. Based on past rock mechanics experiences with conventional depillaring faces, stability issues of the pillars, fenders, and stumps in and around the depillaring face are discussed. This may prove to be an important factor in the success of future CM faces. It is recognized that the application of the modern strata movement monitoring techniques may improve operation safety by providing valuable qualitative and quantitative information that can be used to improve the design of modern concepts like roof bolt based breaker line support during pillaring.

Separation of refractory rock phosphate (P2O5 = 11.5%) from the Dalir area, Iran, containing quartz, calcite and other impurities, by calcination and flotation processes has been successfully used to upgrade the phosphate values. Petrographic studies of this ore showed that collophanite was the major phosphate mineral and the main gangue minerals were calcite, dolomite and quartz. The results of characterization studies showed that the liberation degree of apatite occurred below the average grain size of 140 µm. Preliminary flotation tests were used to process the phosphate samples. Results of preliminary flotation tests showed that they don?t contain any desirable efficiency (grade or recovery) of P2O5. Calcination was the best process for preconcentration of this ore. In the desliming stage, about 14.4% of total P2O5 was removed. Encouraging concentrate grades were obtained after flotation with anionic and cationic flotation, successively. The reagent schemes that have been used in this study consisted of COCO-amine acetate and fatty acid as silicate and apatite collectors, respectively, as well as fuel oil and anionic poly acryl amid as promoter collectors. The optimum pH values for direct and reverse flotations of phosphate were 11 and 6, respectively. Experiments conducted using d80=140 µm deslimed fractions has yielded an acceptable grade of more than 30% P2O5 with a recovery of more than 62%. Finally, a laboratory flowsheet for the processing of Dalir refractory phosphate ore has been proposed.

"This paper first discusses the basic attributes of sustainable mining and the responsibilities of various steak holders including mining companies, governments, and engineers. It is followed by a brief overview of the current practice on regulations, inspections, waste management and mine closure planning in Canadian mining industry. A case study is then presented as an example of sustainable mining where mine planning, mineral recovery, environment protection, reclamation and community development were integral parts of the overall strategy. A comparison of the mine site before and after mining is made to demonstrate the ""best practice"" in modern mining.Sustainability in Mineral Resource Development Extraction of mineral resources and other natural resources on the Earth has been and will continue to be an essential activity necessary to support human’s life. We live on the planet and depend on the available resources to survive. The extracted materials form the base to support modern life. However, we must be aware of the fact that mineral resources are limited on the Earth and may not last forever. Every time we extract one ton of materials, there is one ton less. They are not able to regenerate or regrow. One can ask a simple question: How long will they last? Or, is there anything left for our great grandchildren and many generations to come? The answer is not simple. Some minerals have become scarce or about to deplete. Some minerals may last longer. The reserve of a type of minerals depends on what we have discovered and the minable amount depends on accessibility and technology we have. Even if there are minerals in the deep ground, we may be limited by our technological capability. At the same time, we also need to understand the action of mineral extraction from the ground and the consequences of that action. Mineral extraction is a very hard work. We must break the ground to extract the ore, either through surface mining or underground mining. This action means disturbance of the land where we live. The disturbance is much more visible in surface mining than underground mining. The disturbed land, if not properly reclaimed after mining, is not going to be reusable. The very purpose of extracting minerals from the ground is to support our life but the action has a negative impact on our life. How can we reduce and limit disturbance of land from the action of minerals extraction? How can we make the disturbed land reusable? These issues must be properly addressed and a balance achieved."

"Ground support is a critical element in maintaining the stability of mining drives in deep and high stress mines. In challenging ground conditions, it is necessary to continuously explore ground support strategies that can control the resulting large deformations. It is an objective of mining operations to optimize the ground support by selecting appropriate systems at the time of installation of each reinforcement element. A successful ground support strategy will result in the use of a system that ensures both the structural and operational integrity of the excavations and mitigates the need for rehabilitation.Preliminary ground support design is often based on empirical observations and methods. Once a design is implemented, field trials, observations and in situ pull tests are used to fine tune or improve the design. Although not often employed during this process, numerical modelling can provide helpful insights into the impact of different ground support strategies. In this respect, it is possible to explore the use of multiple options before selecting the most promising ground support system for implementation in field trials. The challenges associated with the numerical modelling of rock support for mines have been described by Lorig and Varona (2013) and Potvin (2017). The employed numerical models should capture all potential failure modes of reinforcement throughout the mining sequence of the excavation. In particular, it is important to emulate the observed in situ ground support performance, as well as the influence of the installation sequence of the support. However, the time and expertise required for this type of modelling of ground support is often not available at mine sites. Even when the expertise is available, it requires a major time commitment and commitment of resources to set up, run and calibrate the sophisticated models capable of explicitly capturing the behavior of ground support.Rock reinforcement is an integral part of all ground support systems used in underground mines. Long, flexible tendons can reinforce the rock mass deeper into the walls and create a thicker reinforced shell around the underground excavation. This article focuses on the optimization of the cable-bolting strategy in squeezing conditions at the LaRonde Mine in Quebec, Canada by integrating the 3D distinct element method (DEM) in the design process. A calibrated numerical model is used to investigate a series of cable bolt configurations and provide recommendations for the ground support design."

Contract Incentives have long been employed in the underground hardrock industry as a tool to influence employee performance, enhance productivity, and control labor costs. While traditionally structured to establish a direct correlation between performance and compensation, many contract programs have evolved into elaborate systems that promote strategies often viewed as independent of productivity. This paper presents the findings of research into these contract incentives and was conducted with the cooperation of 33 mines utilizing a spectrum of employee compensation and incentive programs. Emphasis of this analysis focuses on the types of production contracts observed and their role with respect to employee earnings.

As environmental laws and regulations become more complex and the economic cost of non-compliance becomes greater, periodic assessment of environmental compliance, identification of potential liability and implementation of any necessary remedial action should be a standard part of the operational methods of any successful business. The title of this paper "Environmental Audits, A Shield, A Sword or A Trojan Horse?" is intended to draw attention to the fact that environmental audits can be used positively to shield a business operations from actual or potential environmental liability; can be used proactively as a 'sword" in both a marketing context ("do business with us because we conduct our business safely and professionally?) and as a mechanism for developing positive relationships with environmental regulators; and, used negatively, as a "Trojan horse", by developing information which those same environmental regulators (or the public) use in an enforcement context against your business or that of your clients. This paper will discuss the concept of environmental audits in general; the pros and cons of conducting the same; and the role of the attorney, as part of the "audit" team, to insure, to the greatest extent possible, that the audit process is productive from both a managerial and legal perspective.

"The Coeur d’Alene mining district in northern Idaho was first discovered more than 130 years ago and has been the most prolific silver producer in the United States. The Lucky Friday Mine of Hecla Mining Co. (Fig. 1) is the oldest (76 years) and deepest mine in the district, producing approximately 725 t/day (800 stpd) from narrow, vertical lead-zinc-silver veins. Cut-and-fill stoping is currently employed at depths to about 2.3 km (7,500 ft) below ground surface, making it one of the three deepest mines in the western hemisphere. The #4 Shaft, a winze collared at approximately 1.8 km (5,900 ft) below surface and extending to a depth of nearly 2.9 km (9,600 ft), was recently completed to exploit the high-grade 30 Vein, whose resource has been identified to at least 3 km (9,700 ft) in depth.As with other deep mines worldwide, a number of challenging engineering issues occur, including: high in situ rock stress, squeezing ground, seismicity, high in situ rock temperature that requires refrigeration, diesel equipment that generates diesel particulate matter (DPM) requiring high ventilation airflow rates and long travel times for worker transport to mining areas.This article describes the methods that Hecla Mining Co. has employed during the past 50 years to combat these issues, with emphasis on the current efforts to implement continuous, mechanical mining with automated or teleremote operation and to introduce electric and battery-powered equipment to minimize refrigeration and ventilation requirements for the removal of DPMs.Geology and in situ stressThe host rock mass is an extremely thick sedimentary sequence (the Belt Series) that has been tilted vertically by mountain building. The rock mass in the current section of the mine consists of weak, heavily foliated argillites and stronger, bedded silty-argillites termed siltite. The vertical veins (80° to 85° dip) are parallel to the foliation with an approximate width of around 3 m (10 ft). There are two regional, vertical faults that parallel the vein; one forming the hangingwall of the orebody and one approximately 90 m (300 ft) in the footwall. Additionally, there are several thin, rough northdipping faults that occur in the footwall of the vein which terminate on the major vertical faults.Both the argillite and vein package rock have moderate strength, with uniaxial compressive strength averaging about 100 MPa (14,700 psi with a range from about 70 to 125 MPa), and are moderately abrasive, with CERCHAR abrasivity index of 2 to 3. The major in situ stress is horizontal and oriented in a northwest direction with magnitude about 1.5 times the vertical stress. Consequently, the Lucky Friday stress magnitude at depth is analogous to significantly deeper South African gold operations."

Rock dust is applied in underground coal mines to prevent the propagation of coal dust explosions. It is applied either dry or wet. Both methods have advantages and disadvantages, but the formation of caked rock dust particles is cited as a significant concern for wet applications. We conducted a study to evaluate the effect of modifying the rock dust particle surfaces to repel water and each other by the addition of oleic acid and sodium oleate. At a sodium oleate dosage of 1 kg/t, a contact angle of 112o was measured, indicating strong surface hydrophobicity and thus the ability to repel water. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies indicated a chemisorption mechanism, which is necessary for long-term stability of the surface modification. The dispersibility of the modified rock dust samples was elevated by the application of both oleic acid and sodium oleate, thereby indicating a significant reduction or elimination of the detrimental effect of caking. Tests in an explosion chamber showed an 82.8 percent reduction in the dust explosion potential relative to untreated rock test applied by the wet technique.

Through advanced technology and innovative thinking, the mining industry has become one of the world’s leading industries in environmental protection. But it only takes one Summitville, Omai or, most recently, the Aurul gold tailings retreatment operation in Romania to provide ammunition to the industry’s critics in their attempts to sway public opinion against mining. So for the mining industry to continue operating with the public’s support, it must continue to improve its tailings waste-disposal processes and the dams that hold this waste. In January, about 120 specialists in the mine waste management field gathered together to discuss the available technologies and materials for controlling mine waste and mill tailings disposal. “Tailings and Mine Waste’00” was held at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, CO. This meeting, begun in 1978, is a continuing symposium. It provides a forum for environmental professionals to discuss the state-of-the-art in mill tailings and mine-waste disposal methods.

"In coal and mineral processing, several numeric parameters are used to quantify the separation performance of unit operations. For density-based separations, the partition curve is used as the starting point for many stages of diagnostic analyses. The curve is often quantified by its midpoint slope sharpness, and this single value is subsequently used for technical evaluation, benchmarking, and comparison. While this analytical approach does depict misplacement by relative density class, it inherently prioritizes middling separation and does not consider process economics or the micro-price value of individual classes. An alternative parameter, the organic efficiency, does indirectly consider process economics, but it does not reveal information on the root cause of lost revenue or misplacement. In this paper, a new analytical approach, the partition moment of inertia, is introduced. This parameter reconciles the technical misplacement data derived from the partition curve with the economic data derived from micro-pricing. The result is a new analytical procedure that promises better use of performance data. IntroductionPartition curves are commonly used in the characterization, evaluation and simulation of various physical separators. In mineral processing, partition curve analysis is routinely applied to hydrocyclones, screens, density separators and other beneficiation technologies that are based on intensive physical properties. Graphically, the partition curve depicts the recovery of particles as a function of the physical property on which the separation is based, such as particle density, size or magnetic susceptibility. Given the probabilistic nature of many real separators, the partition curve often exhibits a characteristic S shape (Fig. 1), similar to a cumulative normal distribution. Other geometric features of the curve are also depicted in Fig. 1, including the high and low closeout, or bypass, values; the midpoint slope; and the separation cut point, defined as the property value with 50 percent recovery.Partition curve analysis was originally proposed to evaluate coal washability (Tromp, 1937). Given the limited computational resources at the time, the analytical methods relied heavily on graphical construction and interpretation of the curve. Owing to the simplicity of calculation and interpretation, many of these graphical approaches are still widely used for performance analysis today. The most common calculations are based on the slope of the partition curve at the midpoint. Increased slopes correspond to enhanced separation performance, as a perfect separation exhibits a stepwise transition from 0 to 1 at the desired cut point, that is, an infinitely large slope. One common formulation of this slope, the Ecart Probable, Ep, is derived by evaluating the slope between the 25 and 75 percent recovery points:"

Decreasing copper content in slag is critical for improving copper recovery, where apparent viscosity is the main factor affecting the separation of matte/copper from the slag. The viscous behavior of copper converter slag was investigated during reduction process in this paper, and its non-Newtonian viscous behavior and shear thickening characteristics were clarified. The effects of silicate structure and solid particles in the melt on the slag apparent viscosity were investigated. As slag cleaning proceeded in an electric furnace, the magnetite gradually transformed into ferrous oxide, increasing the FeO/SiO2 ratio. With this ratio increased from 1.2 to 2.0, the slag structure was simplified, and its apparent viscosity decreased from 0.26 to 0.12 Pa·s at 1523 K. The iron phase was excessively reduced to metallic state; the slag contained metallic copper-iron alloy particles, increasing apparent viscosity. The apparent viscosity and phase structure of the slag corresponding to the iron phase reduction process were analyzed in detail; the results obtained in the present study are of great significance to the reasonable control of the converter copper slag cleaning process.

The coal and gas outburst accident on May 20, 2007 at Sihe Coal Mine is unique in that there was no or very little soft coal in the coal seam and that the coal strength was very high. The outburst also showed that there was a very high gas content of 20-30 m3/t in the coal seam nearby the outburst site. Based on the field test and observations, together with laboratory experiments, detailed analysis was conducted on the controlling factors of coal and gas outburst potential at Sihe Coal Mine. Stress data available from Sihe Coal Mine, northern China, and other parts of the world, were also taken into account to facilitate the analysis. The results shows that the stress level was not abnormal compared to other coal fields in China prone to outbursts, and that gas contained in the coal seam was the main factor that triggered the outburst. All these factors were essentially controlled by the tectonic evolution features in Qinshui Coal Basin, to the Southeast of which Sihe coal field is located. Based on the analysis, assessment of coal seam outburst potential was carried out by measurements of coal seam gas contents, observation, and detection of soft coal layers in the coal seam. The results show that outbursts are limited to only a small part of the whole coal seam and that the eastern part of coal field is not prone to outbursts.

However, automation changes the tasks performed by people and may introduce new tasks. For the system to function optimally, these tasks must be designed taking human abilities and limitations into account. Humansystems integration refers to systems engineering processes that ensure that human-related issues are adequately considered during system planning, design, development, and evaluation. During procurement of automated systems, a human-systems integration program plan should be prepared that describes the human-systems integration activities that will be performed to address each of the six core domains of human-systems integration: staffing, personnel, training, human factors engineering, safety, and health.

"In response to the severe drought on the Colorado River basin and in order to preserve existing water capacity to the Las Vegas Valley, the Southern Nevada Water Authority contracted a new deep-water intake (Intake No. 3) located in Lake Mead. The current project (Contract No. 070F-01-C1) includes 5 km (3 miles) of tunnel with very difficult geological conditions and a 200- m (650-ft) deep shaft and marine works. This paper will present the current status of the design-build contract being constructed by Vegas Tunnel Constructors and the challenges and problems faced and the innovative solutions developed to handle the difficult conditions encountered during tunneling with up to 15 bars of pressure.ProjectbackgroundThe Las Vegas Valley receives the majority of its water from Lake Mead, which is located approximately 30 km (20 miles) east of the Las Vegas, NV metropolitan area. Due to the severe drought that has hit the southwest region of the United States, the water level in Lake Mead has receded from its high water level of 372 m (1,221 ft) above mean sea level (amsl) to a low of 330 m (1,076 ft) amsl in June 2015. Should the lake level continue to fall, at elevation 320 m (1,050 ft) amsl, the current water intakes will not be able to draw enough water to meet the needs of the local area. The risk of losing water capacity has prompted the construction of a new deeper intake. Not only is the new Intake No. 3 situated at a lower elevation in the lake at 262 m (860 ft) amsl, the new Intake No. 3 is also located to draw better quality (Fig. 1).Project challengesThe project has had several difficult challenges to overcome:• The work consisted of a 1.2 kt (1,300 st) structure constructed on a barge and lowered 100 m (330 ft) into Lake Mead anchored with 9,200 m3 (12,200 cu yd) of tremie concrete.• The drill-and-blast starter tunnel was impacted by three inflow events, resulting in a one-year project delay.• One of the main challenges was selecting the tunnel boring machine (TBM) and excavating the tunnel with expected hydraulic head pressure of as much as 17 bar (16 bar was the highest pressure recorded during the drive), crossing faulted areas, low rock cover and the risk of tunnel instability due to direct connection with the lake.• Extensive pre-excavation grouting with a constant head pressure ranging from 12 bar to 15 bar.• Structural repair of the cutterhead in difficult hydrogeological conditions [water inflow of approx. 800 m3/hr (4,000 gpm)].• Complete repair of the cascade sealing system for the main bearing and two replacements of the pinion bearings.• The TBM approach to the intake structure."

Alluvial deposits of major rivers often provide relatively uniform tunneling conditions. However, these conditions pose specific challenges due to the tunneling behavior of the granular soils as flowing ground, if unsupported. This paper describes the design considerations and construction experiences gained during the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) drives for the Annacis Island WWTP New Outfall System in the Vancouver, B.C. metropolitan area. Meeting the design criteria for connecting two (2) deep on-land shafts with an in-river riser manifold required advancing a 5-meter-diameter slurry TBM through the Fraser Rivers sands and at a tunnel invert elevation with a baseline hydrostatic head of 3.4 bar.
