The Metals Mining Sector of the Acid Drainage Technology Initiative (ADTI-MMS) addresses technical drainage-quality issues related to metal mining and related metallurgical operations, for future and active mines, as well as, for historical mines and mining districts. One of the first projects of ADTI-MMS is to develop a handbook describing the best sampling, monitoring, predicting, mitigating, and modeling of drainage from metal mines, pit lakes and related metallurgical facilities based upon current scientific and engineering practices. One of the important aspects of planning a new mine in today’s regulatory environment is the philosophy of designing a new or existing mine or expansion of operations for ultimate closure. The holistic philosophy taken in the ADTI-MMS handbook maintains that sampling and monitoring programs should be designed to take into account all aspects of the mine-life cycle. Data required for the closure of the operation are obtained throughout the mine-life cycle, from exploration through post-closure.

Thermodynamic data has been obtained for oleate chemisorption at fluorite (CaF2) and calcite (CaCO3) surfaces using adsorption isotherms determined previously at room and elevated temperatures by in-situ Fourier transform infrared/internal reflection spectroscopy (FT-IR/IRS). Linear regression analysis was used to statistically derive free energy data as a function of temperature assuming oleate chemisorption followed Langmuir-type adsorption. Enthalpy and entropy changes were subsequently ascertained from the Clausius-Clapeyron equation and fundamental thermodynamic relationships. Essentially, no difference in the free energy of chemisorption at the two mineral surfaces was found; however, the differences in enthalpy and entropy values were significant. By comparison, the results showed that oleate chemisorption at fluorite surfaces was more extensive and more entropically driven due to more water being displaced. Results correlate well with values determined in the literature for other mineral collector systems. These findings help explain the greater hydrophobic character of fluorite than calcite in both the absence and presence of oleate.

Over the past decade, a substantial effort has been made to improve the air quality inside enclosed cabs of both underground and surface mobile mining equipment to reduce respirable dust exposures to the equipment operators. As part of this effort, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, (NIOSH) completed a comprehensive laboratory study which determined the significant factors for cab filtration and pressurization systems. From this information, a major underground mining equipment manufacturer designed a filtration and pressurization system which was incorporated into the enclosed cabs of its equipment. A long-term evaluation was performed on the effectiveness of this filtration and pressurization system to improve the air quality in the enclosed cabs of two different pieces of equipment, being a face drill and a roof-bolter machine, at an underground limestone mine. This long-term evaluation demonstrated a significant reduction in dust levels comparing outside to inside cab respirable dust concentrations. During this evaluation, a modification to remove one of the filters on the roof-bolter machine simplified the design without sacrificing the system?s efficiency. Testing using particle count instruments performed during non-production time periods on both pieces of equipment indicated Protection Factors greater than 100 when comparing respirable-sized dust particles inside the enclosed cab relative to outside.

Discussion by E. Arioglu Y. Luo and S.S. Peng are to be congratulated for their outstanding paper providing new results from surface subsidence monitoring over longwall panels under different conditions. This writer found the authors' paper very interesting. In reference to this paper, the following contributions are offered: • In the paper, the maximum possible subsidence [(ASmax)] induced by chain pillar convergence has been related to a parameter (h/1- p) by linear regression. (Notations are expressed in this discussion's Fig. 1 (b).) It is a well-known fact that in a goaf the roof lowers onto broken material that gradually compacts. Then the physical behavior of goat may closely follow the compaction characteristics of broken materials. In light of this assumption, a mathematical means (Fig. 1(a)) of defining the expected compaction (i.e. surface subsidence) represents an exponential expression between [ASmax/m vs. h/1-p]. This is based on Luo and Peng's field observations from the Appalachian, Illinois and Alabama coal fields. (The coefficient of regression "r" under consideration was computed to be 0.883). • According to Wardell's (1969) findings for board and pillar mining, the maximum possible subsidence can be expressed in terms of maximum pillar loading (depth, ratio of extraction) and the height-to-width ratio of the pillars left. Using Luo and Peng's 1991 results, this writer discovered a regression equation between the above-mentioned factors. As displayed in Fig. 1(b), the functional expression approximates as closely as possible the observed subsidence data. It may be noted here that Wardell's approach (1969) can be successfully utilized for longwall panels having chain pillars. If the particles produced and transported in your plant are as chunky as rough crushed coal or as fine as cement, there are probably several conveying and elevating systems suitable for your operation. The problem is deciding which is most suitable in terms of space, energy cost, allowable product degradation, productivity, and angle of movement. Each conveying and elevating method should be fit to the products it can handle successfully, to desirable economics, and to suitability for the overall operating scheme. Matching along these lines will result in selection guides that should be useful for many years, although design evolution is expected for the materials handling equipment involved. There are several common bulk material handling devices for moving solids: belt conveyors, screw conveyors, bucket elevators, chain conveyors, and en-masse conveyors/ elevators. En-masse conveyor/elevator equipment is commonly compared and contrasted with the other devices. These comparisons often involve en-masse versus all others. En-masse has developed into a versatile technique because the machines can move materials horizontally, vertically, or in closed circuit. Such machines unload, elevate, store, reclaim, and distribute materials-all without ancillary equipment except for chutes and gates. Bulk material can be carried, as with a belt conveyor or bucket elevator; pushed, as with a flight or screw conveyor; bumped, as with a vibrating conveyor; blown, as with a pneumatic conveyor; fluidized, as with a dense phase pneumatic conveyor; or by applying internal forces to it to induce "en-masse" flow. Conveying en-masse is analogous to the flow of a fluid in an open channel, and elevating en-masse is analogous to the flow of fluid in a pipe. In the case of a fluid, flow is caused by a differential in pressure. With en-masse movement, flow results from resistance to shear induced by the movement of chain and flights.

Field density studies carried out at the Phelps Dodge Chino Mine have found that truck-induced compaction is limited to the upper 2.4 meters (8 feet) of an individual lift. Hydraulic properties of material compacted to field densities were determined in a laboratory setting and saturated flow models were then run, simulating the effect of compacted zones within a stockpile. Modeling shows that compaction can effectively prevent solution flow through large portions of the stockpile, implying that great care must be taken to ensure that ripping is carried out to a full depth of at least 2.4 meters (8 feet) across the entire stockpile to achieve uniform solution flow. Uniform solution flow will result in maximum leach recovery.

An overwhelming amount of data can be collected around the blasting process. This information can include blasting product, pattern design, blast results, and routing. It is only when these data sources are combined in a concise and accurate form that they are of real use in determining the safety and economic implications of each parameter. Two key technological aspects of blasting are drill fleet management (DFM) and size fraction analysis (SFA). As these technologies are integrated as near-real-time measurement and QA/QC tools, the resolution and realization of blasting parameters is significantly increased. The Freeport-McMoRan Morenci Mine has integrated these technologies along with other existing database structures to create a responsive and sustainable tool for reconciliation, forecasting and parameter matching. This ability allows Morenci to customize blast patterns to meet the criteria most critical to each shot, whether the impact is influenced by routing and recovery, equipment maintenance or safety concerns. DRILL FLEET MANAGEMENT The current DFM was stabilized in its current form in mid 2009 after database and hardware maintenance met stability requirements. Currently the system is running on 12 production drills. The system receives pattern layout and is capable of semi-autonomous drilling over the entire district. The fleet is capable of drilling in highly altered intrusive units and hard granites through the range of sedimentary and volcanic units that comprise the Morenci District. The system brings a level of accuracy not achievable with earlier paint-marked patterns. Depth control is also increased along with more consistent wear and maintenance patterns due to semi-autonomous drilling.

"Since the United Nations conference on "environment and development" in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, the term "sustainable development" or short "sustainability" is used more and more in social-political discussions. Agenda 21 calls on the countries on national level as well as governmental and non-governmental organisations on international level to develop a concept of sustainability indicators to measure the progress towards sustainability. This paper deals with the development of an evaluation system for sustainability in the minerals extraction. By their application, aspects of sustainable development in the raw minerals industry are to be systematically conceived and assessed. This project has been carried out on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour."

Mining is big business in Ontario. The province is Canada?s leading mining region. It consistently ranks among the top 10 jurisdictions worldwide for exploration spending, reaching about C$1 billion in 2011. More than 26 percent of all exploration and appraisal dollars spent in Canada are invested in Ontario. Minerals produced include nickel, copper, platinum group elements (PGE), cobalt, zinc, diamonds, gold and silver. It was reported that there are more than 600 mining exploration projects in the province. And, recent discoveries of chromite in northern Ontario?s Ring of Fire will add to the province?s mineral production in the coming years.

Preliminary engineering for the Waller Creek Tunnel was completed in 2001, but the project was held in abeyance until the summer of 2007. This paper describes several features of the revised design, which required significant changes from the original concept. Most notable is the expected replacement of a tunnel boring machine (TBM) by conventional tunneling. The considerable influence of geological conditions on the tunnel vertical alignment is discussed, in particular the impact of the zones of Eagle Ford Shale with swelling potential. Other features which are described include the wide span tunnels and large diameter shaft requirements.

The Round Mountain gold mine, located 90 km (55 miles) north of Tonopah, NV began large-scale production in 1977. During 2008 Round Mountain Gold Corp. (RMGC) relocated the primary crusher facility approximately 300 m (1,000 ft) to make room for the next phase of openpit mining activities. This facility was installed in 1988 and used a log-crib retaining wall and dump pocket. RMGC selected Hilfiker Retaining Walls and Collins Engineers, Inc. to provide design and materials for a new 17-m- (56-ft-) high mechanically-stabilized embankment (MSE) wall to support the haul trucks at the new location. The construction contractor was EarthTech West Ltd. of Norwood, CO. An MSE wall with a cast-in-place concrete face was chosen as a durable, yet less expensive alternative to the reinforced concrete dump pocket that was originally designed for the project. The arrangement of the MSE wall is of an unusual configuration to meet a variety of operational and maintenance requirements. This paper outlines the selection process, design and construction of the MSE wall.

Vertically stirred media mills are a highly effective low-footprint solution for the ultrafine grinding of industrial minerals. This work investigates the effect of media density on flow patterns within the mill. Direct irradiation of a media particle leads to decay through positron emission, consequently forming two anti-parallel gamma rays, which allow for the real time tracking of particle position. Grinding media of the same size, but with a range of specific gravities are followed using this method, and the effect on the flow within the mill is revealed. The technique is seen to be an effective method to highlight the velocity profiles within the mill, as well as the zones where grinding is less efficient ? areas of relatively low velocity and high residence time. The changing media is seen to effect the overall flow patterns within the mill, having consequential effects on the efficiency of the grind.

This paper discusses the geotechnical instrumentation program on the Central Artery/Tunnel Project, in Boston, Massachusetts. Particular attention is given to a state of the art Graphic Information System (GIS) application which has been developed for rapid analyses and reporting of data. This application will see extensive use during the ongoing complex downtown tunnel construction. The excavations in soft ground require cuts of up to 120 feet deep and 250 feet wide. Deformation and groundwater monitoring instruments have been installed to monitor the stability of the excavation support systems and the abutting buildings. The use of this application is illustrated with an example from an ongoing contract.

In the Florida phosphate industry, fatty acid collectors are used to separate phosphate ore from silica during the rougher flotation stage. However, the presence of multivalent ions (in particular Ca++) in the processing water has been reported to result in the activation of silica with respect to oleate adsorption, rendering it floatable. Hence, adequate separation may not be achieved during the rougher flotation stage. In this study, the direct measurement of surface inter-action forces via atomic force microscopy was used to delineate possible mechanisms for calcium activation under phosphate flotation conditions at oleate/calcium concentrations both above and below the calcium dioleate precipitation limit.

The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system is an internationally recognized classification system that can be used for preliminary ground control design. The RMR system assigns quantifiable values to predefined classified parameters of a rock mass. Assigning a single value rather than a range to each parameter is a source of uncertainty, however, assigning a single value can be useful for further studies related to RMR ratings. Fuzzy systems are being used in an increasing number of application areas where linguistic rules are used to describe the system. In past decades, fuzzy systems have been successfully used in geotechnical and mining engineering problems to cope with uncertain data as well as with vagueness. In such scenarios, linguistic rules and rating-based classification of rock masses have always been questionable. The objective of this study is to apply fuzzy set theory to the RMR classification system. The fuzzy system proposed in this study is specified for weak and very weak rock masses (RMR<50) based on data collected from Nevada gold mines where 68% of RMR data is in the ?poor? and ?very poor? classes. In this approach, a Mamdani fuzzy algorithm has been constructed to evaluate basic RMR89 rating for the ?wet condition.? Comparison between basic RMR89 and fuzzy RMR shows the fuzzy RMR system is valid to predict RMR from the discrete rating of each input parameter.

An important problem in mine operations is the classification of material as waste, low-grade stockpile, and ore. This classification must often be made with blasthole data that are widely spaced and that have sampling errors. Geo-statistical simulation techniques combined with basic economic principles allows a procedure for classification that maximizes expected profit. Geostatistical simulation methods (Gaussian, indicator, or annealing-based) allow the integration of hard and soft data in the creation of alternative, equally-probable, realizations of the mineral grade(s). At each location, for each realization, we calculate the "profit" if the block were to be classified as ore or waste The optimal classification is the one that maximizes expected profit (a Maximum Profit Se-lection (MPS) procedure). We discuss the theoretical justification of the method and implementation details. The use of blasthole data from different types of mineral deposits, that is, different levels of continuity, is considered. We also show the efficacy of the procedure with different levels of sampling error. The increased revenue due to the MPS procedure and improved sampling is shown. We show the geostatistical simulation procedure and the uncertainty in block grades that result from incomplete and imperfect sampling. The optimal classification is presented. Optimal block classifications are transferred to realizable dig-limits by hand-drawing polygonal boundaries. We compare the results of the proposed method to classification based on kriging. Limitations and areas of future work are identified.

It is therefore difficult to find a common line between the text of the various mining laws, but it can be observed that nearly all the States distinguish the mining resources in two categories: the materials whose importance is considered strategic belong to the first category; in the second category the materials whose importance (above all economic) is mainly local are comprised. The paper, analysing in detail the planning procedures in some important Countries, investigates the possible perspectives of arranging some guide-lines for a correct approach to the sustainable exploitation planning/programming of mineral resources (with particular reference to "quarry" materials, such as aggregates), considering both the environment protection and the production needs."

The authors have accumulated published data on residual soil and rock tunnels in the United States and have compared it to transit tunneling experience in Atlanta, Georgia, and tunnels in other soil and rock conditions. Two 6.1 meter (20 foot) diameter shield driven, compressed air tunnels were constructed for the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) connecting the Five Points Station (central hub) with the Peachtree Center Station (first station on the north line). Because of the historic multi-story structures above the tunnels and the variety of subsurface conditions, a comprehensive ground monitoring and observation program was conducted. Conclusions are drawn regarding residual soil and rock ground response due to tunneling. Comparisons are made to ground response due to tunneling in other soil and rock conditions.

The reverse cationic flotation is the most widely utilized flotation method for concentrating iron ore. In such a process quartz is often floated with ether amines (R?O(CH2)3?NH2) partially neutralized with acetic acid. However, it is well known that the cationic flotation of hematite does not work well if a certain amount of slime is present in ore slurry. To improve flotation performance, starch is often added to the flotation feed to selectively flocculate and depress the iron minerals and sodium silicate is used to disperse the silica gangue. The present study was conducted to improve the flotation efficiency of iron ore flotation by use of a new type of depressant for clay and iron minerals, i.e., GP clay binder. It is postulated that the GP clay binder minimizes slime adsorption on quartz and hematite particles by agglomerating clay particles to reduce their surface area. It is further theorized that the clay binder helps depress hematite flotation due to its unique chelating ability to iron ion. The results from this study clearly show that the GP clay binder is an effective depressant in iron ore flotation. When it was used as a substitute for corn starch, it increased concentrate grade from 60.78% to 67.67% and increased iron recovery from 71.96% to 72.90%. The combined use of GP clay binder with corn starch produced even better flotation performance, increasing concentrate grade to 67.08% and iron recovery to 78.15% simultaneously. Potassium fertilizers (potash) are mined in a handful of countries in the Northern Hemisphere. Potash is either expensive or unavailable to the farmers of the Southern Hemisphere. Alkaline alteration of K-feldspar rock (ultrapotassic syenite) in autoclave in the presence of Ca2+ generates a mixture of K-bearing calcium-aluminum-silicate-hydrate (C-A-S-H) minerals that potentially can be used as an alternative local fertilizer. This work investigates the effect of processing temperature (200 °C, 220 °C, and 230 °C) and time (from 0.5 to 3.0 h) on pH, mineralogy, and elemental availability of the C-A-S-H mineral mixture. Increasing temperature results in an increased conversion of K-feldspar and increased content of both the mineral tobermorite (Ca5Si6O16(OH)2·4H2O) and amorphous phase in the resulting C-A-S-H mixture; increasing time results in an increased conversion of α-dicalcium silicate hydrate into tobermorite. The amount of K leached from the mixture is relatively constant across all processing conditions. Hydrothermal alteration in autoclave of K-feldspar-bearing rocks such as ultrapotassic syenite permits the synthesis of a potential potassium fertilizer which alkalinity and mineralogy can be tailored according to soil requirements.
