The 20 foot diameter cast-in-place tunnel lining for Phase 3 of the Mill Creek Tunnel (MCT-3) has been completed. This paper will summarize aspects of liner design and address the construction approach in placing the liner in areas of tunnel that experienced crown overbreak. Tunnel lining production rates, installation procedures and form buoyancies experienced during concrete placement will also be presented.

The National Mining Hall of Fame will hold its 13thAnnual Induction Banquet during MINExpo International 2000 in Las Vegas, NV. The gala black-tie (optional) event will honor eight legendary leaders of the mining industry. The event will take place at the Las Vegas Hilton Hotel on Sunday, Oct. 8. The induction ceremonies will salute mining greats elected by the board of governors from a list of nominees submitted by mining industry partners and the public. The members of the Class of 2000 will join 151 other inductees enshrined in the Mining Hall of Fame in Leadville, CO. The evening will begin at 6 pm with a cash bar reception followed by the banquet and program at 7 pm. Keynoting the banquet program will be Harrison (Jack) Schmitt. He was the geologist/astronaut of the Apollo 17 mission to the moon in 1972 (see related story on page 26). And he is the only scientist to “kick rocks on the moon.” Schmitt is also a member of the Mining Hall’s board of governors. Schmitt was also the keynote speaker at the First Annual Induction Banquet in Denver, CO in 1988.

Of the 345 km long Taiwan High Speed Rail Project, connecting the cities of Taipeiand Kaohsiung, the 23 km alignment on Contract C230 required the construction of5755 m of shallow mined tunnels ranging from 137 m to 1285 m in length. All nine of these tunnels were mined using NATM methodology. On September 6, 2002, a collapse occurred in Tunnel T08 that affected approximately 50 m of tunnel. There was little warning. However, the crew was evacuated approximately 45 minutes prior to failure and thus, no injuries or loss of equipment. This paper will discuss the mining methods, jet grouting ground support, and the instrumentation selected for the rehabilitation and monitoring of the tunnel.

St. Peter sandstone is very different from the minerals and rocks that have been studied extensively in mining. On the one hand, it is brittle as characterized by an unusually high friction angle and steeply curved failure envelopes. On the other hand, it is friable, possessing extremely low, and in most cases zero cohesion. The scarcity of the ground control techniques for this particular mining environment has created many difficulties for the mine operators. In order to resolve these problems, the geotechnical properties of the St. Peter sandstones were investigated through a comprehensive research program, which included uniaxial test, triaxial test, porosity test, thin section, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscope (SEM). The specimens used for the uniaxial and triaxial tests were specially prepared because of the highly friable nature of the St. Peter sandstone. Thin section, XRD and SEM were utilized to examine the effect of the microstructure of the St. Peter sandstones on its strength characteristics.

The study aims to leach copper from a low-grade flotation middling by optimizing the leaching process using response surface methodology. The effect of key parameters, i.e., sulfuric acid concentration, nitric acid concentration and leaching time, on the leaching efficiency was investigated and a quadratic model was suggested by the methodology to correlate the variables to the efficiency. The results indicate that the model is in good agreement with the experimental data at a correlation coefficient (R2) of 0.97 and the most influential parameter on efficiency was identified as sulfuric acid concentration. The optimum conditions for copper leaching from the middling were identified as sulfuric acid concentration at 103.74 g/L, nitric acid concentration at 12.50 g/L and leaching time of 30.98 min; under such a condition, an average leaching efficiency of 93.16% was achieved from the middling.

Cathodoluminescence microscopy (CLM) is uniquely applicable to the study of carbonatite-related fluorspar ore deposits. The mineralogy of the carbonatites, sodic and potassic fenites, marbles, quartzites, and fluorite ores are readily determined and characterized. Calcite, dolomite, apatite, fluorite were deposited dominantly under high temperature conditions and they exhibit strong cathodoluminescence (CL). Three types of carbonatites have been recognized at the Okorusu, Namibia carbonatite complex and fluorspar mines by field mapping and laboratory CLM. The main carbonatite intrusion is fine grained and consists mainly of calcite. A later phase of pegmatitic carbonatite consists of calcite, magnetite, Fe-rich pyroxene, apatite, and pyrochlore. Pyroxene carbonatites were recognized mainly through their study by CLM.

New developments in the pipe conveyor and belt are advanced to address the growth in the capacity, length and complexity of pipe conveyor systems. Improved belt construction can offer better stability during horizontal curves and resistance to twist. Low rolling resistance rubber compound can significantly lower the power consumption and belt tension, producing capital and operation cost savings. Dynamic analysis, when used to analyze the conveyor?s starting and stopping behavior, can improve the design and reliability of long overland pipe conveyor systems. For these three aspects, technical backgrounds and field installations as examples are discussed in this paper.

The 32nd annual American Hall of Fame Awards Banquet and Fundraiser, sponsored by the Mining Foundation of the Southwest (MFSW), will be held at the JW Marriott Tucson Starr Pass Resort & Spa on Saturday, Dec. 6, 2014. Each year, one living Hall of Fame inductee, up to three Medal of Merit recipients, honorees from mining?s past, and recipients of an Industry Partnership Award and a Special Citation are recognized for their respective contributions to the mining industry. Armine Frederick Ban?eld Jr., past chairman and founder of Mintec, Inc. located in Tucson, AZ, will be honored as the 2014 Hall of Fame Inductee at the awards banquet. Banfield founded Mintec from his Tucson apartment in 1970 and expanded it to a global operation. Under his guidance, Mintec won the 2013 President?s E-Award for Exports ? the highest recognition any United States company may receive for making a significant contribution to the expansion of U.S. exports. Medals of Merit will be awarded to Corale L. and James A. Brierley, founder and principal of Brierley Consultancy LLC; David Nicholas of Call and Nicholas Inc. and Scott M. Shields of Joy Global. The Brierleys are being recognized for their true scientific partnership with parallel achievements in academia and in business development. Nicholas is being recognized as the co-founder of Call & Nicholas and for his noted expertise in mining geotechnical engineering. Shields is being recognized for his innovative work with GPS integration and for playing a key role in laying the foundation for autonomous mines of the future. As representatives of mining heritage, the Hall of Fame will induct Patrick E. Dickie, general manager of Bagdad Copper Co., for his foresight in converting the mine from block caving to open pit. The possibility of using 2,2,4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol dissolved in tetrachloromethane as extractant for boron recovery is discussed. The parameters optimized for this purpose are contact time, boron concentration in the aqueous phase, extractant concentration, equilibrium pH and phase ratio. NaOH is used as stripping agent for boron recovery from the loaded organic phase. Boron extraction is found to be a slow process (equilibrium time 20 minutes) compared to boron stripping, which is reasonably fast (equilibrium time 5 min). Maximum boron extraction is possible at a broad pH range from 1.0 to 6.0. Using 1.0M extractant concentration, a 1:1 phase ratio (organic: aqueous) and two stages, ~99% boron extraction is achieved. More than 97% boron stripping is possible using 0.5M NaOH at a 1:1 (organic: aqueous) phase ratio in two stages. Overall, a 95.6% boron recovery was achieved. Loss of solvent into the aqueous phase and co-extraction of Ca, Na and K into the organic phase at higher equilibrium pH are two major concerns in his process.

Many of the world?s largest existing mines are considering substantial step changes in production volumes, compensating for declining ore grades while trying to address increases in world demand for resources. The natural configuration of coal deposits allows for many mine development openings along the strike to access the ore body and thus increase volume. Similarly, with iron ore the nature of the deposits means that additional capacity can easily be added by opening up new mesas and providing extensions to infrastructure. On the other hand most of the non-ferrous metaliferous deposits form vertically and additional extraction volume comes from increasing depth. Underground mining from the base of the strata allows for large extraction rates, but block or panel caving operations develop at rates dictated by the geophysics of the overlying strata and the need for massive tunnelling developments to establish sufficient extraction points for high volumes. For really big mine production capacity, open cast mining still allows the easiest development of more massive mining techniques. But there remains the question of whether there are limits to how large an open cut mine can become in terms of throughput?

Electrowinning is a process by which metals, such as copper or nickel, are recovered from aqueous electrolyte solutions resulting from the extraction of the metal ion from an acidic or basic leach solution. The electrolyte or “pregnant” solution is customarily forwarded to an electrowinning "tankhouse." In the tankhouse, the metal ions are deposited on cathode plates by electrodeposition and then recovered from the cathode plates. Other processes may be employed with other metals, such as nickel, zinc, among others, to produce an electrolyte from which their respective metals are obtained. During the electrowinning (electrodeposition) stage, elemental metal is plated out at the electrowinning cathode and oxygen evolves at an insoluble anode. The evolution of oxygen gas forms bubbles which entrain strong acid electrolyte, carrying it into the air above the electrowinning tank in the form of a fine mist or spray when the bubbles break. An acidic mist is generated above the electrolyte. This mist or spray then spreads throughout the electrowinning tankhouse. The acidic mist is corrosive and a health hazard and can cause extreme discomfort to the skin, eyes, and respiratory systems of tankhouse workers, especially during hot weather conditions. Polyfluoroalkyl based products (PFAS) have been widely applied as anti-misting agents in the electrowinning of metals in an acidic electrolyte. Functionalized PFAS compounds, however, have come under increased scrutiny by the EPA due to their impact on human health and the environment. There remains need for improved acid mist suppression agents for electrolysis and electrodeposition, particularly for products free of fluoroalkyl components.

In recent years, tellurium has been extensively used in the manufacture of semiconductor materials. For this type of application, high-purity tellurium is required. Selenium, lead and silicon are usually the main impurities in tellurium. During the electrolytic refining of copper, tellurium gold and silver are collected in the anode slimes. A pyrometallurgical treatment is used to recover gold and silver from the decopperized anode slimes whereas tellurium is oxidized and skimmed off from the refining furnace as a Na2CO3-based slag. In the slag, tellurium is present as sodium tellurite (Na2TeO3), which is further water-leached from the slag. The first step in the conventional process for tellurium recovery consists of the precipitation of the tellurium contained in the leaching solution as tellurium dioxide (TeO2). The solid TeO2 is then dissolved under acidic conditions for its further reduction with sulfur dioxide gas (SO2). In this paper, an alternative route for tellurium production is presented in which a sodium tellurate [Na2TeO4] intermediate is obtained by oxidation of the sodium tellurite in an alkaline solution following the water leaching step. Sodium tellurate is then dissolved in acid media and high-purity tellurium is obtained by reduction with SO2 gas. Experimental tests under laboratory conditions indicate that the novel process yields higher precipitation selectivity for tellurium than the conventional process. A comparison of its efficiency concerning impurities co-precipitation with respect to the conventional process is discussed.

The propensity of coal spontaneous combustion can be evaluated using various laboratory testing methods such as R70 adiabatic tests, thermal gravimetric analyzer (TGA) and critical self-heating temperature (CSHT) methods. Each of the methods has its unique characteristics and index for classifying the propensity of self-ignition of coals. Accountable relationships among the propensity indices of different methods should be established. Using the newly established R and TGA testing setups in our ventilation laboratory, samples from US coal mines have been collected and tested. 70 The TGA is a relatively new quantitative method. A test can be conducted in a relatively short time. The temperature and weight of the sample can be measured with high precision and then used to determine the activation energy of the coal which is a good indicator for potential of self-heating. Under a specific experimental design, the TGA technique could perform the proximate analysis for determining coal quality parameters (e.g., moisture, volatile matter, fixed carbon and ash content). These parameters can be used in an empirical equation for assessing the potential of coal self-ignition. The trend of activation energies determined using TGA techniques and adiabatic tests are reasonably consistent with each other. As a case study, a comparative analysis of these two methods for determining activation energy was made on coal samples collected from Indiana. The kinetics of the spontaneous combustion mechanism has been explained. If the functional groups of a coal are easier to be activated with a small amount of activation energy at a relatively low temperature, the coal will has a higher potential of self-heating. With the kinetic and coal quality parameters determined by the TGA setup, it has been found that the coal with low potential of self-ignition has low self-heating rate, high activation energy and high minimum self-heating temperature.

Despite the abundance of solid mineral deposits, Nigeria only earns about 0.5-1% of its current Gross Domestic Product (GDP) from the solid minerals sector. This is as a result of the dominance of the oil and gas industry, which has negatively affected the competitiveness of other sectors of Nigeria’s economy. The dominance of this industry has resulted in unemployment, poverty, hunger, domestic price inflation, corruption, unstable government, and higher exchange rates. These impacts are typical for economies suffering from the effects of "Dutch Disease" and the "Resource Curse". Community-based small-scale mining offers hope as an economic activity that can create wealth, employment, reduce hunger and poverty, and provide basic amenities for rural communities with solid minerals endowment. This study presents preliminary results of ongoing research into the prospects of using community-based small-scale mining in a developing country like Nigeria to move towards rural sustainable development.

Adaptations and redesign of the existing already very successful and proven road milling machine concept and technical innovations such as an optimized, specifically for mining application developed cutting drum, cutting housing design and cutting tools, high manoeuvrability achieved via a tight turning radius, a three disk clutch system and a cutting drum drive that allows for the acceptance of higher loads, a complete reinforcement of the chassis to withstand higher vibrations and torque, the installation of increased engine power via a modern drive unit, a specifically for mining/construction applications developed operator’s platform and finally a redesigned air intake system and the adaptation of the levelling system resulted in far more cost effective and advantageous capabilities of Wirtgen Surface Miner in soft to medium hard mining and construction applications. As the achieved results show for the first time in modern surface mining history mechanized cutting is capable to compete successfully against traditional drill, blast/ripping and other conventional mining methods.

Despite near-record commodity prices, the mining industry continues to search for ways to maintain profits in these times of steadily increasing energy prices and steadily decreasing grades. The pressure is still on today’s miners to continuously improve their operations because they know that one day prices too will drop. Some, however, have seized the opportunity to employ systematic methods to reduce costs and increase the efficiency of their workforce and equipment. As a result, closer attention is being paid to scheduling and the value that could be added by defining the extraction sequence that maximizes the net present value [NPV] of a project. This paper will discuss the challenges faced by Newmont Mining Corporation [Newmont] at its operations and the application of sophisticated software tools and methods in its search of solutions to this problem.

Washington?s King County is constructing a new regional wastewater treatment facility, called Brightwater, in response to growth in the greater Seattle region. Planning conducted in the late 1950s identified the need for two regional treatment facilities. Constructed in the 1960s, these plants have served the region well. However, an eventual need for a third facility was also recognized. The Brightwater project implements the final phases of the long-term plan. The project includes a new treatment plant and an extensive conveyance system. When completed in 2010, the Brightwater facilities will treat sanitary sewer flows from growing populations living in northern King County and southern Snohomish County. The new system will fulfill commitments to provide wastewater services to local jurisdictions and sewer service providers in the King County Service Area. It will also provide more flexibility in the operation of the King County regional wastewater system. The Brightwater wastewater treatment plant will provide secondary treatment capacity using membrane bioractor technology in 2010 for 36 million gallons per day (mgd), with anticipated expansion in 2040 to 54 mgd, using membrane bioreactor technology. These capacities are for average wet-weather flows. The plant will also accommodate peak hourly flows of 130 mgd by 2010 and 170 mgd by 2040. This paper describes operating gains resulting from standardizing operating and maintenance practices to improve the performance of the pebble crushing circuit at he Empire Concentrator. Past efforts have led to improved operating time but no additional throughput gains. New Operating standards and checklists were developed and introduced. The content and frequency of the review process indicators was then changed to take advantage of the new practices resulting in an increased feed rate and availability through the pebble crushing circuit.

In underground coal mining, particularly room-and-pillar methods, the coal pillars play a significant role in roof stability. If the pillar dimensions are increased, the pillar bearing capacity also increases, but more coal remains in the pillar and therefore the recovery of mining operation decreases. Therefore, determining the optimum pillar dimension based on technical, economical and performance parameters is important. In this paper, the coal pillar is designed by using the concept of ground reaction curve (GRC). For this purpose, the GRC for coal pillars is drawn and then the elastic and plastic zone of coal pillar behavior is determined. Based on elastic and plastic zone, different equations are presented to draw a pillar reaction curve and the process of coal pillar design based on GRC is explained. As a case study, this new technique is applied to study the coal pillar state in Tabas coal mine of Iran. The results show that the presented new approach is successfully used in the design of the optimum coal pillar dimensions, and also determines the elastic and plastic behavior limit, which is important especially for the logical design of yield pillars.

The Wachovia Headquarters and Arts and Cultural Campus project in Charlotte, NC includes a 1.5 million square foot, 48-story office tower, two museums, an Afro-American cultural center and a 1,200 seat theater for the performing arts. Public access to the Cultural Campus is through two pedestrian tunnels constructed under city streets connecting to parking garages. The 5.7 m wide by 4.7 m high mined tunnels were procured through a design-build contract. The tunnels were designed as initial/final shotcrete linings with a sprayed water barrier sandwiched between layers of shotcrete. In addition, the mix design was supplemented with a cementitious admixture to develop internal water resistant properties in the shotcrete.
