Interest in the western oil shales of the US began in about 1908, with the first retort in Colorado constructed in 1917. The most successful early developments were near Elko, NV, where the Catlin Shale Products Co. produced more than 1.9 dam3 (12 000 bbl) of shale oil during 1920-1924 and at Rulison, CO, where a US government operation produced about 570 in 3 (3 600 bbl) of shale oil during 1926-1929. Plentiful low-cost crude oil was developed about this time and shale oil was of little or no interest until after World War II. From 1944 to about 1972, several companies, and the US government, operated shale oil mines and recovery plants in Colorado. While technical successes were achieved and an estimated 40-56 clam' (250 000-350 000 bbl) of shale oil were produced, economics were not favorable and commercial production was not achieved. In recent years domestic production of crude oil supplies has not kept pace with US consumption. The growing shortfall has been met with imports. The cost of imported oil has continued to escalate and increased US dependence on petroleum imports are national concerns, because of the negative impact on US balance of payments and an increasing dependence on other nations for US energy needs. In 1978, petroleum imports equaled about 44% of demand, up from 23% in 1970, but down from 48% in 1977 because of availability of Alaskan North Slope crude oil. Reduced domestic consumption and other factors have reduced current imports to about 40-45% of de¬wand-but at ever increasing cost. The growing shortage of crude petroleum and its increasing cost have resulted in renewed worldwide interest in oil shales. In the past, the main obstacle to oil shale development (progress toward commercial production) has been economics-shale oil cost too much to develop and thus could not compete with conventional petroleum crudes. Even with today's inflated energy prices, some experts say the production of synthetic crude oil from oil shale is, at best, marginally economic. Conventional methods of drill hole site selection are reviewed briefly. Two approaches using geostatistics are then discussed, both of which have been shown to yield improved results. Finally, a branch and bound algorithm is described which will select the best locations for drilling from a user specified number of possible drill sites. Two options are discussed. First, the user can specify a maximum drilling investment or a maximum number of drill holes and the program will select the locations yielding the minimum estimation variance. This amounts to getting the most for a given investment. Alternatively, a maximum tolerable estimation variance can be specified and the program will select the number and location of the drill holes to obtain the desired information at a minimum cost. Another benefit of the approach is the quantification of the tradeoffs between investment and information obtained.

"Located in the northeast corner of Zacatecas State, Mexico, the Peñasquito operation is comprised of the Peñasco and Chile Colorado (Brecha Azul) deposits. Openpit mining (prestripping) began in 2010 and full production commenced during 2011. The openpit mines feed both a sulfide concentrator (mill) and a heap leach pad. The project is owned by Goldcorp Inc. Peñasquito is a poly metallic deposit with Au, Ag, Zn and Pb being recovered as payable metals.As a consequence of lower grade ores expected with advancing mine life, Peñasquito is facing a declining metal production profile. To maximize returns and asset value, plant modifications, including the addition of a carbon prefloat circuit and a pyrite leach circuit to improve recovery, are currently being undertaken. This carbon prefloat circuit will enable the recovery of precious and base metals from carbonaceous sediments. This material is currently being stockpiled. With the associated increase in complexity in the process circuit, the requirement of the ore control system to accurately predict ore feed characteristics is critical to maximizing metal recovery at the Peñasquito operation. The addition of the carbon prefloat circuit was also a key driver in allowing the Chile Colorado openpit to be developed.These conditions alongside Goldcorp’s drive to increase profitability and maximize net asset value has created challenges. These challenges are numerous and multifaceted. However, the ability to accurately route materials from the ore control system is critical to site success, and some of these challenges have been overcome by the adoption and implementation of a new ore control (OC) technology. Examples of these technological innovations in the ore control program are discussed in this article and include improvements in geomodeling, material routing and reconciliation. Successful implementation of these elements has led to significant improvements in selectivity, performance and data management, while reducing the variance between planning and execution, thus helping to drive overall improvement across the operation."

Several universities and colleges in Australia, Canada and the United States, recognized the need to establish or reorganize geoscience programs at the vocational and two-year technical levels. To accomplish this, a cooperative study with industry in one state or province from each country was initiated. These include Tasmania in Australia, British Columbia in Canada and Alaska in the United States. The objective of this work was to develop a diversified geoscience educational model at the two-year technical, vocational and continuing education level that provides the source from which any nation can draw the proper educational tools to create a new geoscience program, modernize an existing program or strengthen a weak program. More than 100 mineral industry organizations provided information regarding their specific training needs for support personnel. The data gathered have been used to identify training areas for semi-skilled, skilled and technical personnel in geochemical mineral exploration. These included geological, geochemical, environmental and computer skills. With the areas of major educational need defined for geochemical exploration, an educational field skills model was developed for the three levels of training. The international need for a study of this type was recognized as early as 1980, following numerous contacts from domestic and foreign geoscience educators regarding the structure and success of training within the University of Alaska Fairbanks Mining Extension program, located in Fairbanks. Contacts, correspondence and visits included educators from Australia, Brazil, Canada, Mozambique and the conterminous United States. The need was magnified between 1985 and 1989 at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, when an attempt failed at initiating and developing a two-year geoscience vocational-technology program leading to an Associate of Science degree.

To exploit an underground mine effectively and safely, it is important to have a good understanding of the geotechnical behavior around underground excavations made in the mine. The aim of this study was to investigate the geotechnical behavior around a tunnel excavated in a metal mine in China at the three-dimensional level. Using the information available on lithology, geological structures, in-situ stress measurements, physical and mechanical properties of intact rock, discontinuities and interfaces between different rocks, a three-dimensional numerical model was built by using the 3DEC software to simulate a tunnel excavation under a high in-situ stress condition. Effect of the discontinuity network, possible intact rock and discontinuity parameter variability, representation of rock masses as discontinuum or continuum material and rock support system on the deformation, stress, failure zone and stability around the tunnel was investigated. A very good agreement was obtained between the collected field deformation monitoring results and the results of the conducted numerical stress analyses.

Some large-scale mining companies in Ghana have adopted proactive management strategies in dealing with small-scale (galamsey) miners who have encroached on their concessions. This has been mainly achieved by ceding portions of the concessions held by the companies to the Minerals Commission of Ghana for licensing to the small-scale miners. This development has created an amicable relationship between the mining companies concerned and the galamsey miners in their host community. Since the regularization of the activities of small-scale mining in 1989, two types of small-scale miners have emerged — legal and illegal.

The objective of this research was to conduct field-scale experiments at an operating surface coal mine in order to determine the impact of the bucket fill factor on dragline production rate and energy consumption. Data collected from a dragline monitoring system were recorded in a specifically designed software tool and the relationship among these parameters was established. an algorithm for the determination of the ?best? fill factor was developed and integrated in the software. It was determined for the analyzed dragline in the mine that energy consumption in the digging phase can be reduced by 36% and production rate can be increased by 1.4% for a bucket fill factor of about 80%, a fill distance of 19.8 m (65 ft) (i.e., 3.1 bucket lengths) and a bucket fill time of 15 sec. the method developed and applied in this study may help dragline operators to determine the fill factor that will increase production rates and reduce energy consumption in specific surface coal mines. Over the past decade the number of contractors working in underground coal mines has nearly doubled; however, the effect this has had on the industry?s injury rates has been the subject of much speculation. The confusion exists because the U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) database does not assign contractor hours to the individual mining operations where they worked. To better understand the safety record of the contractor segment of the industry, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) undertook a comprehensive analysis of the data contained in the MSHA database. The first part of the study compared overall contractor and operator trends from 1983 to 2009 related to employment, hours worked, injury rate, and days lost. One unexpected finding was that the larger contractors tended to have higher injury rates than the smaller ones. The second part of the study directly addressed the role of contractors on the safety record of 10 large underground coal mines. A detailed analysis provided both injuries and estimated contractor hours worked at these mines for the period 1992?2007. Comparison between the estimated contractor injury rates and the reported operator injury rates at these mines indicated that the contractor injury rates were significantly higher at most of the operations studied. However, the industry-wide data indicates that contractor and operator injury rates have converged since 2005 and are now equivalent.

This paper provides estimates of large-scale temperature gradients that can be used to support modeling of natural convection and cold-trap processes in thermally perturbed drifts. Temperature influences estimates of the quantity and chemistry of water contacting engineered components (e.g., drip shields and waste packages) in a potential high-level waste repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada. Temperature gradients drive natural convection and cold-trap processes, which could affect the distribution, quantity, and chemistry of liquid-phase water contacting drip shields (waste packages).The confluence of high temperatures, liquid-phase water, and high chloride may lead to corrosion of drip shields and waste packages. An overview of the evolution of environmental conditions in thermally perturbed drifts is presented to provide a context for the estimates of temperature gradients. A mountain-scale conduction-only model is used to estimate temperature gradients and temperature differences for a drift located at the center of a potential repository. Thermohydrologic models and heat transfer algorithms are used to evaluate the reasonableness of the conduction-only results. Estimates of temperature using an in-drift heat transfer algorithm account for the possibility of drift degradation and formation of a rubble pile on the drip shield. Temperature differences between the center and ends of the drift are estimated to rapidly increase to 80 °C soon after repository closure. That temperature difference decreases over time to 15 °C after 10,000 years. Local temperature gradients are generally estimated to be less than 0.2°C/m, though the gradients can be much larger near changes in lithology and near the end of the drift. The estimates of temperature gradients do not account for intermediate- and small-scale variations, such as those influenced by differences in heat loads between waste packages, intra-layer variations in thermal properties of the surrounding fractured rock, or localized drift degradation.

Arsenic is among the list of major contaminants in mining aqueous waste streams. Though the elemental form is toxic, the aqueous oxyanions are more so. The most common forms of arsenic released during mining processes are arsenate and arsenite. The common treatment technologies to date can be summed up in these major categories: oxidation, coagulation, absorption, and media filtration. These methods can often involve many expensive processing steps that may also be limited by variables, such as total dissolved solids, other cations and anions, and the oxidation state of the arsenic. An innovative technology, falling in the absorption category, was developed that can successfully reduce such aqueous forms to a level below the EPA recommendations. This new technology offers a unique and viable solution which is transparent to the above mentioned limitations.

Coal production in the United States increased in2004 by 36 Mt (39.7 million st) to end the year at 1 Gt(1.11 billion st), according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). This was a 3.7-percent in-crease from 2003’s 971.6 Mt (1.07 billion st) (Table 1).(All percentage change calculations are done at the short-tons level.) Although U.S. coal consumption rose in 2004, not all coal-consuming sectors had increased consumption for the year. Coal consumption increased in the electric power sectors by 1 percent and declined slightly in the other industrial sector, while coking coal consumption dropped by 2.4 percent. U.S. coal exports rose for the second consecutive year, while coal imports again increased to record levels. Coal stocks declined during the year, as electric generators used their stockpiles to helpmeet increased demands and missed shipments. Coal producers used their stockpiles to supplement their production levels.

The effects of microwave treatment on the floatabilities and magnetic susceptibilities of some sulfide minerals, namely, pyrite, chalcopyrite, galena and sphalerite, were studied. Pure mineral samples were prepared in -425+212-µm, -212+106-µm and -106+38-µm size fractions. Microflotation and magnetic separation tests were carried out on the samples after microwave treatment at 600, 950 and 1,300 Watts for 5, 20, 60, 90, 120 and 240 seconds. The maximum temperature values of the samples were measured during the microwave treatment, and possible altera-tions on the mineral surfaces were determined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The effects of microwave treatment are discussed based on the result of microflotation and magnetic separation tests. The results revealed that pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were heated very quickly and that their surface temperatures reached ~700° to 900°C, while the temperature of sphalerite reached only ~130°C. The floatability of pyrite, chalcopyrite and galena were decreased when microwave energy and the duration of treatment were increased, owing to oxidation of the mineral surfaces caused by relatively high temperature. As expected, there was no change in the floatability of sphalerite. The magnetic properties of pyrite and chalcopyrite were improved by the increase in microwave energy and the duration of treatment to such an extent that 90% of the feed separated as magnetic product. But no change was observed in the magnetic properties of galena and sphalerite.

Pulsating high-gradient magnetic separation (PHGMS) of fine hematite from tailings was studied using a pilot PHGMS separator to investigate the possibility of its application in industry. The results of this investigation indicate that PHGMS is effective for recovering fine hematite from the tailings and greatly improved the separation performance compared with the conventional high-gradient magnetic separation at the same conditions. By applying the pilot separator with a 1-mm rod matrix to a tailings containing 28.76% Fe, a concentrate assaying 54.35% Fe with 35.89% recovery was achieved. It was found that the separation performance of the pilot separator closely correlates with the main pulsating parameters, i.e., pulsating stroke and frequency. It was also found that a change in the wire diameter of the rod matrix from 2 to 1 mm causes a weak drop in concentrate grade but results in a considerable rise in recovery. This finding proves that the improved performance achieved by the pilot separator is attributed to the pulsating of slurry and to the use of a 1-mm rod matrix. When the first commercial SLon-2500 PHGMS separator with a 1-mm rod matrix was applied to recover fine hematite from the tailings, the results duplicated those achieved with the pilot PHGMS separator.

Introduction In recent years - even months - the number of articles on computers has increased rapidly. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or magazine without seeing a computer-related article. The article usually explains how the computer will change our lives. Many of us have some concern about the nature and type of change. For most of us, though, the problem is lack of information and understanding about how computers work. In other words, how do we make cost-effective decisions about computers? This three-part series will explain, simply, what a microcomputer is, how it works, and how to decide if you need one. This first article will define terms and briefly discuss areas where computerization might be economic. The second article will discuss geology and mining applications. The third article will discuss plant, administrative, and geotechnical areas as well as the future of software development in the minerals industry. Terms and Concepts All computers have input and output devices and a central processing unit (CPU). Information - instructions and data - is communicated to the computer by means of input devices. These instructions to the computer are converted into language that the computer understands. This causes the instructions to be carried out in the CPU. The result of these operations is translated back into language that we understand. This information is then sent to output devices such as printers and video display tubes. Traditionally, peripherals were devices separate from the main-frame (the CPU and memory) and were used to input, output, and store information or instructions. Today, peripherals perform the same functions though they may be housed in the same cabinet as the CPU and memory. Historically, peripherals included all input and output devices not part of the mainframe. Input devices include keyboards, magnetic tape, and card readers. Tapes and disks are input as well as output devices. Output devices are printers, CRTs (Cathode Ray Tubes), and any mass storage device capable of storing data when directed to do so by the computer or the program. In fact, any mass storage device that can give the computer data when requested is an input device. Mass storage devices include floppy disks (thin, round sheets of plastic covered by metal particles), and hard disks. The latter are thicker and more densely coated with metal particles. This allows much more information to be stored. Another type of mass storage is magnetic tape. Its type and size varies widely. Processing and Storage Any computer understanding must include how instructions and data are processed and stored. Information is stored as a positive or a negative field known as a "bit." There are eight bits in a byte. The bits can be represented as either a one or a zero. Thus the code for a byte representing the numeral one is 00110001. The byte representing the letter A is 01000001. These codes are from the American Standard Code for Information Interchange (ASCII). ASCII defines the standard set of characters including alpha, numeric, and special characters. The computer's memory has allocated locations where instructions as well as incoming information can be stored. All information and instructions are stored as binary numbers bit by bit - zeros and ones. The amount of data that can be stored is referred to as either thousands or millions of bits or bytes. The letter "K" is used to designate one thousand units. The letter "M" is used to mean one millon units (one meg). The New Croton Aqueduct (NCA) was the first major water supply tunnel for New York City. The 50-km (31-mi) long tunnel has 33 open shafts 6 m (20 ft) to 121 m (397 ft) deep. The tunnel and shafts are lined with brick and mortar, with cast iron lining and pressure covers in six pressurized shafts. Details of the 1895 construction are provided and compared to modern construction techniques. The paper provides rehabilitation techniques for the shafts and pressure covers, including grouting, epoxy lining, temporary bulkhead design and installation and placement of tremie concrete 98 m (320ft) below the water level in a 122 m (400ft)deep shaft using a Remote Operated Vehicle (ROV) to monitor the placement.

Todays End of Life vehicles are shredded and their metal components recovered and recycled by standard methods. The remaining non-metallic fraction is shredder residue, and contains vast amounts of high value engineering plastics. None are today recovered. Discussed are the developmental approaches used in the first process to recover these valuable plastics. Examined are initial laboratory studies, pilot plant design and construction, product development, results, and flowchart explanations.

In this study, NIOSH researchers conducted a machine learning analysis to examine whether a model could be constructed to assess the probability of dynamic failure occurrence based on geochemical and petrographic data. Random forest, cluster analysis and dimension reduction were all applied. The objective of dimensionality reduction was to explore patterns and groupings in the data and search for relations between compositional parameters. Cluster analyses were performed to determine if an algorithm could find clusters with given class memberships and to what extent misclassifications of dynamic failure status occurred. A random forest analysis performed on data from the Pennsylvania Coal Sample Databank cross-referenced with accident data from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) determined that 7 parameters of the 18 examined exerted the most influence on results. Cluster analysis on data after dimensionality reduction resulted in a hierarchal clustering algorithm finding four clusters, with one relatively distinct dynamic failure cluster, and three clusters consisting mostly of control group members but with a small number of dynamic failure members.

For an industry that provides more than half of the nation’s energy needs, the U.S. coal industry still attracts negative publicity. However, the nation’s energy appetite continues to increase. And political leaders and the public are beginning to understand that alternative fuels will not be enough to keep up with that appetite. Does that mean the nation will now embrace the coal industry? No, according to speakers at the Rocky Mountain Coal Mining Institute (RMCMI) meeting. The industry still needs to sell the public on coal’s advantages over other fuels. And the industry must continue to develop technology that will allow coal to meet and exceed strict clean air and clean water regulations.

HIGH SPEED RAILWAY NETWORK Spain is a very adequate country to develop the high speed railway network thank to its geographical feature which has a 600km long radius, from Madrid- the capital that covers mostly the whole country. Therefore, the railway is a major competitor of the airline. In Spain, the new access to the north and northwest is nowadays the most important railway project which will allow a significant saving of time in the near future to the central plateau and the northern territories. Time savings as well as strict environmental considerations have been the main objective of various studies during the last decade leading to Guadarrama and Pajares tunnels as ones of the optimum solutions. Cordoba-Malaga high speed railway, the extension of the present Madrid—Sevilleline, through the Abdalajis range and the rail project to cross oriental Pyrenees between Spain and France are another two samples of large tunnels currently underway. In these four projects, the ground already encountered and to be soon encountered is highly variable, from very hard granite and gneiss in Guadarrama and Pertus to very poor argillite in Abdalajis, shale in Pajares and schist in Pertus. A number of faults are also expected. Hence, double shield hard rock TBM has been chosen. Figure 1 shows a general scheme in four projects. These four projects represent a total of 2 × 68 km of which 87 km are under DRAGADOS contracts. PROJECTS UNDERTAKEN BY DRAGADOS Guadarrama Tunnels This project is the longest twin tunnel with 28.377km, in Spain and considered one of the longest in Europe. The operating speed will be 300 km/h. This tunnel will link Madrid and the north territories through Guadarrama range. (Figure 2). The south portal is placed at el. 997.8m above the sea level. The tunnel starts with an inclination of 3‰, increasing until 15‰. After 6,620m length, the tunnel passes under the Morcuera ridge with an overburden of 960m. After 13,400m length, the elevation is 1,024m which is the highest point, and then the tunnel declines with a slope of 9.5‰, 2‰ and 19‰ until the north portal in Segovia province.
