Introduction The incentives for developing a distributed form of the comminution model include: • for describing the heterogeneous comminution behavior of multiphase mineral systems (i.e. realistic ore bodies, such as complex sulfide ores consisting of chalcopyrite, galena, sphalerite, pyrite and siliceous minerals) and •for generating, for various locked and free particles, in situ, microscopic, breakage behavior such as the mode of fracture (intergranular vs. transgranular), the relative rates of breakage and the breakage distribution. However, the computational difficulty and the effort made in estimating a large number of parameters (Andrews and Mika, 1975; Wiegel, 1976; Herbst et al., 1985, 1988) do not justify the utility of this approach. Also, obtaining the results experimentally is very tedious and time consuming if using this approach. Although recent work in this area (Choi, Adel and Yoon, 1987; Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990) showed good results for liberated particles, the quality of the estimation and prediction was poor for locked particles. Attributing this to the complex breakage behavior of locked particles, it was concluded that additional constraints, and possibly modification in the breakage distribution functional form for locked particles, were necessary. However, further mathematical analysis revealed that the method previously used was in error. The purpose of this technical note is to present the correct solution methodology used in solving the general model equations of a multicomponent mineral system containing multiple classes of locked particles. Previous work and connection The general form of the comprehensive, distributed-component comminution model has been described as (Herbst et al., 1985) [d (m (0) -[ I - B ] S_ m(t) = A m(t) (1)] where [A] is the fundamental matrix/state companion matrix, commonly referred to, in the comminution literature, as the "mill matrix." Note that for a distributed-component comminution model, this is a full, general, real matrix, unlike a lower triangular matrix for a simple grinding model or a lumped-binary grinding model with one locked-particle class (Herbst et al., 1985, 1988). Also note that all of the underlined letters refer to matrices. Herbst et al. addressed the difficulty in arriving at a closed form of the analytical solution of Eq. (1) via similarity transformation [IT J inv (T)]]. This difficulty occurs for several reasons: •[A], as a general real matrix, may have complex eigenvalues and complex eigenvectors. •More importantly, there is no guarantee that a set of eigenvectors of [A] will turn out to be independent. An attempt was made to solve this problem by implementing a decomposition method. With this technique, the mill matrix was decomposed into a sum of lower and upper triangular matrices [(i.e., A = L + U)]. Then the solution was obtained using similarity transformation (Mehta, Adel and Yoon, 1989, 1990). This work is concerned with the extraction of refractory metals using an electro-reduction process, in which a molten oxide melt, instead of halide, is used as the electrolyte. The process may provide an alternative method of producing refractory metals from their ores through use of a reverse-polarity direct current (DC) plasma arc heating process. In such a process, the plasma torch itself acts as an anode, and resulting liquid or solid product metals work as a cathode, whereas the molten oxide melt plays the role of an electron transfer layer. The focus of this study is: the electro-reduction of scheelite; vanadium pentoxide; and chromite. For the vanadium pentoxide, the proposed melt is mainly composed of CaO-V2O5/Li2O-B2O3-V2O5or FeO-CaO-SiO2-V2O5-Li2O with the addition of other alkali and alkaline metal oxides. In the case of scheelite ore, the SiO2-CaO-Li2O-WO3system is used as melt and metal aluminum or nickel could be used as a collecting media. As for the reduction of chromite ore, SiO2-CaO-Cr2O3-Li2O system with trace amount of CaF2is used as the melt. As a demonstration, chromium was successfully produced at a laboratory scale through the plasma driven electro-reduction process. One of the studied slags had a composition of 13.8% CaO; 4.9%CaF2; 36.4% Cr2O3; 6.9% Li2O; and 38.0% SiO2. Two observations are significant in this laboratory scale study. The first one was that the amount of Cr2O3and FeO, which were predominantly electronic conductors in the oxide melt, greatly affected the conducting mechanism of the melt. With high concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the melt, the current efficiency was fairly low. In this case, chromium was found to be barely reduced because of electronic conducting mechanism. For example, with initial slag of 60% Cr2O3, no chromium was found reduced. With low concentration of Cr2O3and FeO in the studied melt, typically no more than 30% Cr2O3, it was observed that chromium was readily reduced due to the dominant ionic conducting mechanism. The second observation was that the addition of SiO2tothe melt helped to make the oxide melt more ionic, which was apparently desirable to the molten oxide electrolysis. However, high content of silica had a negative effect on the fluidity of the melt. This was resolved by adding trace amounts of CaF2to the melt. Therefore, by judicious selection of oxide melt, refractory metal oxides might be dissolved into it and yet the melt itself retains the required ionicity. A reverse-polarity DC plasma driven molten oxide electrolysis may prove to be a viable alternative route for the extractive metallurgy of refractory metals.

INTRODUCTION Boom-type miners mechanize the cutting and loading of a solid face of rock having a compressive strength as high as 124 MPa (18,000 psi). These machines differ from continuous miners in that they can cut much harder rock for any given cutter-motor power. In addi¬tion, a boom miner is more flexible, selectively cutting any cross-sectional configuration from circular to square arched faces, 1.57-rad (90°) turns, and mixed faces. The basic operational concept of these machines, utilizing a rotary cutterhead mounted on a slewing boom, gained importance in Europe during the 1960s, where, due to their specialized use in roadway development in coal mines, they were called roadheaders. Along with continuous miners, boom miners share the ability to fully mechanize the cutting and loading of rock, while eliminating the need for explosives and the shattering and overbreaking of roof and rib rock that is normal with conventional mining methods. The machines are crawler-mounted and most have a gathering-arm load¬ing system that, moves the cut rock onto an internal chain conveyor, subsequently discharging the rock into a transport device such as a shuttle car or a bridge conveyor. Light- to medium-weight boom miners are cutting softer rocks and minerals successfully, including coal, shale, rock salt, potash, phosphate, weak sandstones (e.g., those associated with uranium ore), and other softer ores such as iron. Heavy third-generation ma¬chines have extended rock cutting to much harder ores such as borate, oil shale, and almost all rock associated with coal seams, except for the harder sandstones and limestones. The mention herein of specific manufacturers, brand names, or models is made by way of example only and does not constitute endorsement by the author or The Pennsylvania State University. All costs cited herein are in 1977 US dollars. TYPES OF BOOM MINERS All boom miners utilize drag bits fixed on a rotary cutterhead that is powered by an electric motor mounted in the slewing and elevating cutter boom. The cutter¬head is either a ripping or a milling type, and the machines have evolved through three generations (Boldt, 1977). As shown in Fig. 1, only one boom miner cur¬rently produced can use both ripping and milling cutter¬heads on one machine. Table 1 lists boom-miner models built in large num¬bers and/or successfully used or marketed in North America. Table I excludes machines of which only a few have been produced and none sold in North America, such as those manufactured by Demag, Eick¬hoff, Paurat, and Thyssen-Rheinstahl. The only Ameri¬can boom miners are the F-16 and Super ROC¬MINER"', manufactured by AEC, Inc., State College, PA. Machine Generations Three generations of boom miners can be distin¬guished according to their times of introduction, their rock-cutting abilities, and their weight classifications. Fig. 2 illustrates typical best-practice production rates possible from boom miners for selected cutter-motor power sizes (other power figures can be interpolated). "The I-70 Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel (EJMT) Fixed Fire Suppression System (FFSS) will help protect the traveling public as well as the entire tunnel itself, which is a critical asset of the Colorado highway system. This project is part of an effort to avoid any closure or long-term damage to these tunnels after a fire event. Historically, the EJMT complex has experienced two to three fires a year. While CDOT has firefighting capability at the EJMT complex, the fixed fire suppression system will provide first responders the critical time needed to safely approach the scene and take action, and is a necessary tool in combating tunnel fires, keeping the public safe, protecting the tunnel structure, and minimizing disruptions to traffic. This paper provides a case history of the first-of-a-kind design and construction of the EJMT FFSS. Major project elements include; water-only deluge fire suppression system, fiber optic linear heat detection system, updated fire alarm system and new drainage system. PROJECT BACKGROUND The I-70 EJMT FFSS was awarded to the Design Build Team lead by Barnard Construction, supported by Rondinelli Life Safety, BCER Engineering, ILF Consulting, Western States Fire Protection and Systems Group. The team conducted successful live fire tests at the Boulder Regional Fire Training Facility in November 2014, with the final design of the FFSS and other supporting infrastructure completed in the spring of 2015. Construction began in early summer of 2015 and the project was completed in December 2015. While CDOT currently has firefighting capability at the EJMT complex, this project features an intelligent linear heat detection system that can accurately identify a fire within feet of its location and subsequently activate the corresponding water-only FFSS deluge zone, bringing water in from an existing supply system on the west side of Loveland Pass. The detection system also activates cameras so the EJMT onsite control room personnel can view and better assess a fire event. The uniqueness of this design is that the majority of the installation occurred above the traffic lanes in the tunnel, which resulted in minimal impacts to motorists below. The fire suppression system will help protect the traveling public as well as the tunnel structure, a critical asset to the highway system. This project is intended to reduce damage and avoid long-term closures of the tunnel due to fires. A long-term closure could cost Colorado billions of dollars and negatively impact tourism along the I-70 mountain corridor."

"A cationic surfactant, tetradecyl tributyl phosphonium chloride (TTPC), was first used as a collector. Flotation characteristics of muscovite using TTPC have been investigated through flotation tests. And dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (DTAC) was tested for comparison. Their adsorption mechanisms on muscovite surface were clarified using zeta potential measurement, DFT calculation and molecular dynamics (MD). The flotation results indicate that the recovery of muscovite decreases when the pH increases in the presence of surfactants. When a maximum of recovery was reached, the dosage of TTPC was 2×10-5mol/L which was half of that of DTAC. Zeta potential measurements confirm that the TTPC displays a stronger collecting power than DTAC and is a superior collector for the muscovite flotation. DFT calculation and MD simulations show that TTPC interacts with the muscovite mainly through electrostatic attraction and hydrogen-bonding. The conclusions drawn from purely theoretical computations matched remarkably well with the experimental results. Keywords: Quaternary phosphonium salts; Flotation collectors; Flotation INTRODUCTION Muscovite mica is widespread in igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks. It has the general composition KAl2(AlSi3O10)(OH)2. Muscovite mica exhibits perfect cleavage along the (001) plane, which exposes interlayer potassium ions[1-3]. In aqueous suspensions, the potassium ions readily enter into solution, leading to the development of a net negative charge on the (001) plane[4-6]. The surface of the muscovite mica is negatively charged at all pH > 1[7]. Due to the negative charge surface over the whole pH range of 2–12, the muscovite mica would not be expected to respond to anionic collectors in the absence of an activator. Conversely, the mineral is readily recovered using cationic collectors. However, until now, various amines and their derivatives (with N atoms as the center) are still the only available cationic collectors which still had their shortcomings such as weak selectivity, low flotation speed. Since few types of cationic collectors could be used, in some sense, the limitations of collectors are increasing significantly and the cationic flotation is facing more and more challenges. Quaternary phosphonium salts, as novel cationic surfactants, are widely used in antimicrobial, catalysis and surface modification field due to their biological activities, hydrogen bonding capability, stability and superior group electrical property[8-10]. There are a number of processes where quaternary phosphonium salt surfactants have shown better properties than quaternary ammonium salts and amines. Although the adsorption of quaternary phosphonium salt surfactants at the bacterium–liquid interface has been studied thoroughly, the case of adsorption in mineral surface has not been investigated thus far."

"NIOSH has observed that many control rooms and operator compartments in the US mining industry do not have filtration systems capable of maintaining low dust concentrations in these areas. In this study at a mineral processing plant, to reduce respirable dust concentrations in a control room which had no cleaning system for intake air, a filtration/pressurization system originally designed for enclosed cabs was modified and installed. Eighty-seven percent of submicron particles were reduced by the system at static conditions, meaning that greater than eighty-seven percent of respirable dust particles should be reduced. The particle size distribution for respirable dust particles are greater than for submicron particles, and filtration systems usually are more efficient in capturing the larger particles. A positive pressure near 0.02 inches of water gauge was produced which is an important component for an effective system and minimizes particles (e.g. dust) from entering into the room. The intake airflow was around 118 cfm, which is greater than the airflow suggested by ASHRAE for acceptable indoor air quality. INTRODUCTION Chronic overexposure to respirable silica dust (particle diameter < 10 microns) leads to a progressive lung disease known as silicosis. Workers who develop silicosis have an increased incidence of lung cancer and pulmonary disorders. In June 1997, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (1) found sufficient evidence to declare that inhaled crystalline silica in the form of quartz and cristobalite is carcinogenic. Mining is one of the leading industries for occupational exposure to silica dust (2-7). Control rooms located in dusty areas in some mines are of particular concern (8). Many mineral processing operations utilize operator’s compartments and/or control rooms to house workers who are performing particular job functions. Most industrial processing mills have rooms where a worker looks out over the facility and has direct control over the product flow throughout the entire building. In addition, primary crusher operators are often located in a compartment from which they are able to view the primary crushing function. Their job is to control when trucks dump into the primary jaw crusher and the rate of feed of the ore from the hopper into the crusher. Many of these control rooms and operator booths do not have filtration systems capable of cleaning air entering the control room or booth, which can result in elevated concentrations of dust in the room or booth. To reduce the dust concentrations in these rooms, it would make sense to clean the entering air with filtration/pressurization units similar to those proven to provide a clean environment in enclosed cabs."

The Golden Jubilee Mine in South Africa is the first mine in the Western World to introduce resin-in­pulp technology for the recovery of gold from a cyanide-leached slurry. Located in the Eastern Transvaal region of the country, the plant processes approximately 375 metric tons• of ore per day, of which over 90 per cent is mined in an open pit adjacent to the metaflurgical plant, while the remaining 5 to 10 per cent is trucl<ed in from two small high-grade deposits, located about 10 kilometers from the plant. The gold grade in the open pit is about 1 git, while the values m the two high-grade deposits range between 5 and 15 git. At the current treatment rate, the proven reserves m the three locations will last about another 10 years. Early testwork indicated that the ore was not well suited to conventional filtration processing or to heap leaching because of its high cfay content, and that carbon-m-pulp (CIP) would probably prove to be the most viable metallurgical route. Tcstwork to establish the feasibility of CIP for this application was carried out at Mintek in 1985. This worl<, which was based on batch-leaching and carbon-loading tests, indicated that CIP was technically feasible, but that both the rate of gold loading and the gold-loading capacity of the carbon were inferior to those obtained with Witwatersrand ores. The poor adsorption characteristics of the carbon were attributed to the abnormally high concentration of natural organic compounds (humates and fulvates) in the ore. Batch tests were therefore also carried out with strong-base resins, since resins are known (1] to be far less susceptible to organic fouling than is activated carbon. The results were very promising, and pointed to fast kinetics and a high loading capacity. (Fig. 1 ). Notwithstanding these findings, it was decided to recover gold with activated carbon at Golden Jubilee Mine because the CIP process was, by then, well established in South Africa and elsewhere in the world, whereas resin-in-pulp (RIP) was unproven technology. The r>lant was commissioned in September 1986 and, for 18 months, operated in a carbon-in-leach (CIL) configuration, i.e. with a total of . six leach tanks, the last four of which contained activated carbon. As could have been predicted from the laboratory results, the performance of the CIL plant was generally poor, low gold loadings on the carbon (less than 1500 git) and high losses of soluble gold (0.2 to 0.3 p.p.m.) bemg characteristic of the operation. In order to improve the thermal environment in deep coal mines, two principles can be applied: firstly, the reduction of heat flow into the air stream, and secondly, cooling of the air current. First of all one should try to minimize the heat-flow rate into the air stream underground by the mining method itself. German coal mines prefer the caving system of advance longwall mining simultaneously on several levels with ascensional ventilation. The effects of descensional ventilation and different face ventilation layouts on the thermal environment are discussed, besides the effects of pneumatic and hydraulic stowing. Application of all mentioned possibilities together instead of today&apos;s common mining method would reduce the Basis Effective Temperature considerably. In the future, hydraulic haulage of the raw coal underground substituting belt conveying may be a mean to improve the thermal environment further on. If the working depth of a coal mine exceeds about 1 000 m, cooling of the air stream under-ground will be necessary in addition to the above- mentioned measures. Generally, in German coal mines different types of indirect-contact air coolers located nearby the face are used. Besides such so-called cooling coils, large-capacity spray coolers are used because they work more efficiently if a great cooling duty is demanded. Common designs of both air cooler types and their possible utilizations are demonstrated. Deep coal mines in the Federal Republic of Germany need up to 30 MW of total cooling capacity. Mostly, the needed chilled water is cooled by large-capacity refrigeration plants placed on surface, underground or in combination of the above locations nearby the shaft. Due to the increasing underground cooling demand, the distribution of the chilled water and the control of the air coolers become more important. The conception of a control system is discussed, which is based on the control of the single air coolers. All air coolers of a mine are controlled so as to optimize the supply water-flow rate with regard to the demanded cooling duty of the coolers. On the next upper level of the control system the whole chilled water network and finally the refrigeration plant is regulated. Present research work deals with the use of ice for cooling mines. There are some unsolved problems in this new cooling concept. Some aspects of making, transporting and storing ice are described. The use of ice may probably reduce the cooling costs of German collieries, which are at present approximately 4 DM per ton of saleable coal.

There is a credible, cogent, and responsible argument that mining can be part of a sustainable future in countries with freely elected governments, transparent and enforceable laws, a closure plan with an adequate bond, and a small handful of other measures. This perspective, built largely upon the understanding of mining as a temporary use of the land, is coupled with a growing understanding of economic diversification as a tool to level out the ‘bust’ side of the boom and bust cycle. There are verifiable signs of progress that the sector has, at least in some venues, begun to embrace this view of ‘sustainability’ both in philosophy and practice. While laudable, there remains a conundrum not yet fully explored. It is conceivable that companies can fulfill all legal requirements, practice corporate responsibility in its broadest and most liberal interpretation, and yet leave behind, after the gates are closed and the lights turned off, a situation which is not only unsustainable, but far worse off than before mining started. Having observed this outcome, repeatedly, some critics have concluded that all mining should be stopped. Others recommend that it be vastly curtailed until regulatory regimes are re-vamped, communities fully empowered, and companies brought to heel. Yet others, including many within the industry, are looking to hold back this dark prospect with peer pressure, branding and competition for good will. In this paper, I propose to focus on this discontinuity, that gap wherein the chain of logic breaks and reasonable policies, reason-able choices, reasonable actions, may fail to deliver expected results. I suggest that any meaningful definition of post-closure sustainability must include the concept of human welfare, and increasingly, human security, over and above meeting the requirements of law, beyond retaining shareholder value and reputation, beyond discussions of subsequent land use and diversified employment. I suggest that self-determination, that ability of a people to hold for themselves the vision of their own future, and to have a sense of their power to implement it, may be both the most difficult and the single most important determinant of long-term sustainability in a community. The particulars will vary; a Canadian junior or an Australian multinational, a highly regulated state in the American west or a ‘failing state’ in Africa’s west, gold or sand and gravel. But the recommendation is the same: this must be a collective endeavor, a shared responsibility involving some combination of government, companies, communities, local and international NGOs (non-governmental organizations), each contributing in the ways most able.

A.B. Rushton The work and resulting publications of the Committee on Underground Coal Mine Safety and The President&apos;s Commission on Coal were appropriate at the time of publication. The statistics cited in the publications appeared to be valid, and the actions proposed by the committee had merit. Although the actions proposed to achieve further improvements in safety may have been worthy of repeating, to associate statistics (Table 1) that are seven to eight years old with company names is bad. Statistics are readily available from the Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) and are usually within three months of being up to date. A review of the most recent Coal Controlling Co. Report will reveal significant changes in the rankings. The more recent statistics should have been cited, or at least compared with those used in the article. Westmoreland Coal Co. is listed as having a 21.1 disabling injury rate for the period (1/78-12/80). The disabling injury rate for the Company for the year ending 1985 was 7.4 for the underground mines and 6.25 for the total facilities. Through March 1986, the dis- abling rate for the underground mines was 2.86. The management and employees of Westmoreland Coal Co. are committed to safety. The improvements achieved over the past five years attest to that commitment. We are justifiably proud of the achievement and dislike being misrepresented as in the April 1986 article Reply by E.M. Spokes I regret that the lapse of time since the original work gives a picture of safety practice that is no longer true today. That Westmoreland has reduced its disabling injury rate by 65% to 7.4 in 1985 is most commendable, and I congratulate you for this accomplishment. It is typical of the progress sought by the National Academy of Science and National Research Council when they funded the original study and published "Toward Safer Underground Coal Mines" in 1982. If a significant number of companies do as well as Westmoreland, the report will have served its purpose. Since the paper was primarily a condensation of the original report, it would not have been appropriate to seek access to later statistics. The purpose in seeking its publication at the time of presentation was to reach those who might have missed the original report. The fact that publication was delayed has not voided that purpose and may have reminded some who were aware of the original that its recommendations still apply to improvement of underground coal mine safety

INTRODUCTION A current need of the phosphate industry is the development of process technology for treatment of high carbonate content ore. About 75 to 80 percent of the world phosphate reserves (1) are associated with carbonate gangue, which is not amenable to treatment by the existing techniques. Numerous laboratory and pilot plant studies have been devoted to carbonate-phosphate separation. Different techniques were involved (washing, sieving, attrition, flotation, calcination, and leaching). For technical and economical considerations, flotation appears to be an efficient process for this problem. Separation of carbonates (calcite and dolomite) from igneous phosphate is applied in industrial plants in Brazil, Finland, and South Africa. But, for sedimentary phosphate, no industrial realization exists at this time, with the possible exception of some plants in China. The main problems with sedimentary phosphates are: • high substitution by CO3-2 and F- for P04 -3 in the apatite lattice. • larger surface area of the phosphate particles because their surface is porous and irregular. • tendency of sedimentary minerals to produce more slimes in conditioning than the crystalline minerals, hence, larger dosages of collectors are required for sedimentary minerals. Investigations reported in the literature indicate that most processes developed for sedimentary carbonate-phosphate separation involved inverse flotation of carbonates using fatty acids as collectors (2), (3) associated with phosphoric acid (4), monosodium phosphate (5), F- (6), or SiF6 -2 (7) as phosphate depressants. Later investigations, conducted by A. Henchiri and G. Baudet (8), (9), (10), (11), (12), (13) in the BRGM technology department, of phosphoric esters revealed that these reagents are selective collectors for carbonate-phosphate separation. The above investigators developed a process which used phosphoric esters to collect carbonate minerals and sulfuric acid or sodium fluorosilicate as depressants for phosphate. Extensive comparative tests for different processes on the same phosphate sample show that the process developed at BRGM is one of the most promising methods proposed for sedimentary phosphate-carbonate separation. It should be pointed out, however, that phosphoric esters make abundant froths. The handling of these excessive froths will be a problem in an industrial-scale plant. This paper outlines test work performed in order to optimize and to improve the efficiency of the flotation process on a sedimentary phosphate ore selected from the Sra Ouertane orebody. The Sra Ouertane flotation process, illustrated on Figure 1, first removes carbonate minerals by inverse flotation and then recovers phosphate as a froth product, leaving quartz as a cell product.

Erratic distribution of values in free gold ore bodies presents severe problems in sorting material in large scale open pit mining. However, an intense program of modern blasting techniques and less than modern gold panning results in good sorting at Houston International&apos;s Manhattan mine. Blasting technique is important. If the sample location cannot be relocated because of blasted material movement, information acquired while drilling is useless. So short benches are critical to minimize dilution. Though not very accurate, panning allows for rapid analysis. The more accurate fire assay does not provide the needed speed. Panning can be fairly accurate and errors made are mostly on the low side. Samples of mixed and broken stockpile material are used as checks on pit procedure and to develop stockpile content in¬formation. Added tonnages discovered offset the higher labor costs of this careful sorting technique. The mine is located in central Nevada&apos;s Toquima Range in the small mining town of Manhattan, 322 km north of Las Vegas. The mine has four epithermal stockwork ore bodies that are mined in two pits. The mine problem was that conventional ore control was not separating ore from waste. Assays of 6-m blast-holes were used on 5-m centers. The blastholes were relocated by stadia survey after blasting. Holes assaying above the cutoff grade were flagged and mined as ore. This system is practical and useful in high concentration ore bodies or in evenly disseminated mineralization. But it was not practical at Manhattan because of large gold particles and small ore pocket sizes. Ore pockets were often missed when drilling a grid area for blasting. Also, large gold nuggets made assay results unreliable. The probability of a nugget being contained in an assay charge is small. So most results were low, compared to actual grades mined based on stockpile samples. When a nugget found its way into a fire assay charge, the result would be far higher than the actual grade of material represented. In addition, disturbance by blasting created problems in relocating ore. Because of these problems, the grade control program was intensified in September 1979. It successfully separated ore and waste in blocked out ore areas and located more ore in "waste" areas. Known reserves mined to date have increased up to 50% on some benches. The methods used are modern blasting techniques, detailed assaying, and traditional panning of samples collected from active mining faces. These methods allow mining flexibility, to match the variable mineral occurrence in ore bodies. The united effort of the geology and engineering departments has been important to the program&apos;s success.

This review summarizes three sets of ongoing studies which we are performing in collaboration with a number of researchers associated with the Dept. of Interior - Generic Mineral Technology Center for the Study of Respirable Dusts, concerning surfactant-particle interactions studied using this surrogate surfactant. These topics are: (A) the suppression of mineral particle cytotoxic potential by DPL adsorption and the persistence of this effect under conditions of enzymatic digestion; (B) surfactant suppression of organic particle cytotoxicity by DPL adsorption and the effect on subsequent expression of genotoxic potential; (C) potential effects of surfactant on heterogeneous structured complex respirable particles. The references list some of our reports which can provide additional information on these studies. Further, those reports provide references to the literature of the field and to the works of others on these topics. Deep lung airspaces, the pulmonary alveoli and respiratory bronchioles, are coated with a hypophase which is rich in surfactant biomolecules secreted by the alveolar type II epithelial cells. The surfactant is known to be critical to maintaining stable low surface tensions on the inner surfaces of the alveoli by forming a surfactant layer on the airliquid interface of the alveolar hypophase. Upon deposition in the acinar regions of the lung a respired particle&apos;s initial contact will be with this surfactant coating over pulmonary tissue. A primary component of this surfactant is the phospholipid diacyl glycerophosphorylcholine, commonly called lecithin. A surface layer of dipalmitoly lecithin on saline will act much as full pulmonary surfactant in decreasing surface tension and producing a hysteresis in surface tension behavior with surface area. We have used dipalmitoyl glycerophosphorylcholine, or dipalmitoyl lecithin (DPL), a major component of that surfactant, dispersed in physiologic saline as a surrogate for studying interactions of both mineral and organic respirable particles with pulmonary surfactant and consequent effects on particle toxic behavior. A. DUST CYTOTOXICITY AND LECITHIN SURFACTANT ADSORPTION Respirable quartz and kaolin clay particles are found to be comparably cytotoxic in a number of in vitro bioassays including lavaged rat pulmonary macrophage release of cytosolic and lysosomal enzymes, and red blood cell hemolysis as a measure of dust membranolytic potential. These direct and prompt cytotoxic activities do not account for the distinctly greater potential for quartz to induce pulmonary disease. When respirable quartz and kaolin are incubated with a dispersion of DPL in saline at 37C it is found that the prompt cytotoxicity of both dusts is fully suppressed as measured in vitro by pulmonary macrophage release of lactate dehydrogenase, beta-N-

Progress, future challenges, and the continual search for more efficient and rapid methods of excavating underground openings and shafts were main themes at the 1983 Rapid Excavation and Tunneling Conference (RETC) held June 12-16 in Chicago, IL. The event, jointly sponsored by the Society of Mining Engineers, the American Society of Civil Engineers, the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, and the Engineering Institute of Canada, offered a diverse program for both civil and mining engineering disciplines. Although all papers given at the three-day conference were noteworthy contributions, and each is included in the conference proceedings currently available from SME, there were a few sessions that had particular mining-related interest. Research, Acceptance Needed for Water-Jet Technology Water-jet-assisted rock excavation is seen by some as a technology moving from the prototype phase to a fully developed, accepted system within the next decade. For an industry that is traditionally fairly slow in accepting significant changes, this development appears especially noteworthy. However, speakers at the water-jet technology session generally agreed that many large US manufacturers are not viewing water-jet-assisted equipment as viable replacements for all-mechanical systems. This, they fear, may mean some US manufacturers will lose a significant share of certain equipment markets to foreign competitors who are moving aggressively ahead in this area. Despite the advantages of increased cutting rates, reduced power requirements, less dust, prolonged bit life, and reduced sparking in many cutting situations, water-jet technology applied to mining is apparently having some acceptance problems in the US. R. J. Evans, professor of industrial engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, noted that there are several perceptual barriers to water-jet coal cutting; such as uncertainties concerning the fu¬ture demand for coal and the reliability of equipment, apprehensions that jet-assisted equipment will make the mine operator dependent on specific types of hard-to-obtain equipment, and fears about accessibility of the equipment for repairs. Evans also said numerous parameters need defining before taking advantage of water-jet-assisted cutting systems in under-ground coal mining in the US. For the cutting head, information must be obtained on optimum bit geometry and spacing, and maximum and minimum torque requirements. For a complete US water-jet cutting system, Evans added, research is needed to establish optimum jet pressures, jet powers, number of jets per bit, and location of jets relative to the bit. INTRODUCTION The past few years has seen an increased interest in the determination of statistically valid properties of a rock mass. The increased use of computer modelling for the study of rock excavation behaviour has created a need for upper and lower statistical bounds for the properties of a rock mass being modelled. Obviously, to determine the statistical properties of a large volume of rock, many samples must be tested - an expensive proposition when using conventional testing facilities and procedures. As a result of high costs per sample, sufficient tests for statistically valid results are rarely done. In an effort to reduce both sample preparation and test facility costs, an instrument called the Bemek Advanced Rock Tester (BRT) was developed in Sweden. With a total weight of approx. 35 kg, the BRT is portable and sells at a small fraction of the cost of a conventional testing machine. It is comprised of a small 65 KN loading frame with attachments for a variety of tests (see Table 1) , a hand operated hydraulic pump, an electronic balancing unit and a programmable microprocessor. The microprocessor is capable of storing data, performing arithmetic operation on, and printing signals from, a transducer and two strain gauges. A detailed description of the apparatus is given by G. Swan et al. (1). The proposed test strategy involves first a 3-point flexure test on a notched core specimen, followed by a 4-point flexure test on the separated specimen halves. Finally, point load and Brazilian tests can be carried out on the quarter parts of the original specimen. Thus specimen preparation is kept to a minimum. These and other perceived advantages have prompted the purchase of this machine and an evaluation of its suitability to provide data on mechanical properties of intact rock for numerical modelling and rock mechanics design at Noranda&apos;s underground mines. Details of its performance evaluation and experiences with the unit are discussed in the following sections. [ ] INITIAL OPERATING EXPERIENCE During the commissioning stage the BRT had, or developed, a series of problems, some of which seriously affected its operation. Below are some examples. Poor documentation was the most serious problem encountered. Confusing instructions for the 4-point bend test installation and its microprocessor programing, as well as poor and ambiguous information on the calculation of gauge factors, are some of the difficulties which had to be overcome. Meehan~cal problems occurred, including failure of the hydraulic pump, as well as electronic difficulties with the microprocessor. Other problems with the printer, requiring its replaceqent, were fortunately covered under warranty.

BACKGROUND Diesel exhaust is an animal carcinogen, although evidence of the carcinogenicity in humans is "limited". (World Health Org. , 1989) Of the eight cohort studies in the 19808, five found an increased risk for lung cancer among workers who may have been exposed to diesel exhaust (RR from 1.3-1.5, SMR from 101-132). (Howe, et al., 1983) Only two studies accounted for smoking indirectly. Of the ten case-control studies in the 1980&apos;s, eight reported increased risk of lung cancer among those populations purportedly exposed to diesel exhaust. (Benhamou, et al. , 1988) All but one of these adjusted for smoking and other occupational exposures. The odds ratios ranged from 1.2 to 2.1. In two of these studies, miners experienced a two to three fold risk. (Benhamou, et al., 1988) Bladder cancer has also been linked to diesel exhaust in cohort and case-control studies. Excesses of approximately 50% were observed among truck drivers in studies by NCI. (Hoar, et al., 1985) In the National Bladder Cancer Study, risks for truck drivers rose with duration of employment. A study by NIOSH in Ohio also found an excess of bladder cancer among truck drivers, particularly among those with 20 or more years of employment. (Steenland, et al, 1987) Despite the large number of studies in which the relation between diesel exhaust exposure and lung cancer has been examined, exposure to diesel exhaust has been quantitatively estimated only in the studies of railroad workers and truck drivers. (Woskie, et al., 1988) The excess lung cancer risk experienced by workers in these two occupational groups was modest, ranging from 40 to 90% for those with long-term employment. However, diesel exhaust exposure among railroad workers and truck drivers is lower than that seen among miners. Several markers of diesel exhaust have been utilized in these studies. Diesel exhaust is a complex mixture of particulates, vapors and gases. One group of these gases, the nitrogen oxides, react with polynuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, forming mutagenic and possible carcinogenic nitrated derivatives. (World Health Organization, 1989) For this reason, and because it is easy to measure and analyze, NO, was frequently used as a marker of diesel exhaust exposure. As part of the Garshick (Garshick, et al., 1988) study of railroad workers, Woskie measured NO, exposures of 477 railroad workers. In the past mining engineers have tended to rely heavily on the advice of fan manufacturers in relation to fan equipment issues. A more adequate approach was advocated in a paper [ Wallis, 1965 ] submitted to the Eighth Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress held at Surfers Paradise, Australia during 1965. At that time Mount Isa Mine were in the process of installing 3 large 6096mm (20ft) diameter vertical axial flow surface fans of an advanced type [ Mathews et al, 1967 ]. The preliminary feasibility studies prior to preparing the detailed job specification for this project were extremely thorough with the result that it was possible to include detailed information and instructions in the document, ensuring the procurement of equipment that was satisfactory in all respects. Full advantage was taken of expert services provided by external organizations during the large coordinated multi-disciplinary exercise. My continuing activity and development in relation to the technology of axial flow fans is now at a stage where all known design and performance data are accessible through CAD programs [ Wallis and Kipp, 1987 ]. The extensive calculations that were necessary in 1983 can now be carried out in a mere fraction of the time, and with complete confidence. Model testing in order to validate the fan and duct design proposals is, in my view, no longer essential. The first of the computer programs enables a mine ventilation engineer to study a large number of alternative axial fan arrangements for comparison with the centrifugal alternative. By entering the volume flow rate, fan pressure and air density, he can then with ease, and rapidly, investigate the effect of various blading arrangements, downstream evasee area ratios, and hub ratios, on fan diameter and speed, with their related attainable fan efficiencies. This procedure had its origin back in the 60s when I was advising mining companies on new fan equipment. At that time such an investigation was quite lengthy and lacked the precision and completeness that is now available within the present programs. To obtain the major benefit from these outputs, it is most important not to be disconcerted by the three very important nondimensional parameters, namely, the tip flow coefficient (LAMt), the fan pressure coefficient (Kt or Kit), and the swirl coefficient (Es and/or Ep) as these are important when assessing the various design proposals. When seeking an understanding of the role and importance of each of these variables, ample help is provided in the user manual; the design recommendations are summarized in the help screens which are readily accessible within the design programs.

California was a major talc-producing State until the late 1980s when production from the deposits in the Death Valley area ceased because of a number of factors which included pressure to discontinue mining in and around Death Valley National Monument, and health concerns affecting markets for tremolitic talc. The states of Montana and Texas now account for slightly more than half of U.S. talc production. Deposits in an area encompassing southern Death Valley and extending east into the Kingston Range were formed by contact metamorphism of carbonate beds in the Precambrian Crystal Spring Formation next to Precambrian diabase sills. These deposits contain ore ranging from high-purity, fine-grained talc to platy, tremolitic talc with high brightness. Deposits of tremolitic talc and talc schist in the Silver Lake District in San Bernardino County resulted from metamorphism of Precambrian carbonate beds intruded by granitic plutons. Northeast in Esmeralda County, Nevada hydrothermal alteration related to Late Jurassic plutons caused talc replacement of Precambrian to Early Cambrian dolomite. A hydrothermal origin is also indicated for talc deposits in the lnyo Range just north of the Death Valley District where bodies of unusually pure talc occur in Paleozoic lime- stone near Jurassic granitic plutons. Talc is now mined from a deposit in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range southeast of Sacramento where quartz-mica schist of the Permian Calaveras Formation has been hydrothermally altered to talc. Replacement of magnesite of the Precambrian Allamoore Formation produced talc deposits mined in the Allamoore District of west Texas. This dark-gray talc of low iron content with carbon- aceous material and dolomite is ideally suited for use in ceramics where it makes a white product when fired. Small bodies of platy light-pink to white talc suitable for use as an extender in paint are also mined in this district. In the Llano District of central Texas talc has replaced impure carbonate rocks and serpentinite. All Montana talc production is from deposits in the southwestern part of the State that formed by Precambrian hydrothermal alteration of dolomitic marble. This alteration produced material with high purity that ranges from very fine-grained, massive talc to coarser grained, foliated talc. Markets include pitch control in paper, paint, cosmetics, ceramics, rubber and plastics. In southwestern and northeastern Oregon, talc has replaced serpentinite in the vicinity of Mesozoic plutons. Soapstone for carving is mined from a southwestern Oregon deposit. Deposits of similar origin occur in central and northwestern Washington.

INTRODUCTION The continuous mining machines which were introduced in the 1950&apos;s now account for more than half the production of coal from underground mines. Unfortunately, these continuous miners which were designed for increased productivity have also increased the concentration of respirable dust in mines. Inhalation of this respirable dust by miners causes the Coal Worker&apos;s Pneumoconiosis (CWP). Concern for CWP increased in the United States following a 1963-65 survey that showed definite x-ray evidence of CWP in 9.8 percent of working miners and in 18.2 percent of nonworking miners in the Appalachian bituminous coal region (Breslin and Niewiadomski, 1982). One of the major objectives of the Federal Coal Mine Health and Safety Act of 1969 was the prevention of CUP. This law initially limited the daily average exposure of coal miners to 3 mg/m3 of respirable dust. However, following the results of a probabilistic model developed by Jacobsen, et. al. in 1971, the limit was reduced to a mass concentration of 2 mg/m3 unless quartz content exceeds 5 percent, a rare occurrence in mines. Based on x-ray categorization prior to death it is believed that the mass concentration in the respirable fraction is a parameter of primary interest for hygenic evaluation of dust exposure. Elorgan, Burgess and Jacobson (1973) suggested that the quantity of inhaled dust, although influential is not the only aspect of exposure which is significant in producing CWP. Miners working in higher rank coal (anthracite) mines are more susceptible to CWP (Morgan, Burgess and Jacobson, 1973). This also confirms the findings of the British (Bennett, Dick and Kaplan, 1979 and Hurley, et. al., 1979) and Germany (Reisner and Rubock, 1977). Based on the cy to toxicological evidence Reisner and Rubock (1979) suggested that when coal properties are similar, increasing quartz and mineral content increases toxicity. David, Ottery and Le ?oux (1975) examined that as the severity of the CWP increased the retention of the coal dust content in the pulmonary region remained the same, while that of quartz content increased significantly . Leiteritz, Baur and Bruckman (1971) studied the various components of coal dust and showed that coal particles comprised a smaller fraction of the mass of fine dust than did particles , of quartz and minerals. It is ironic that quartz and mineral matter both comprise smaller fractions of the higher rank coal dust (Dodgson, et. al., 1971 and Dwiggins, 1981). "The construction of mechanized tunnels in soft ground has evolved significantly over the last 20 years, especially in the control of the face pressure and the closure of the soil-lining void to reduce the induced settlements. On the other hand, several mechanisms of the TBM excavation cycle are still not taken into account for routine design calculations, such as the increment of water pressures in front of the tunnel face, the flow of excavation fluids around the shield, the dynamic equilibrium between the grout pressures and the excavation convergence, among others. This paper discusses specifically the issue of face pressures and how several mechanisms, which are routinely not considered, can be easily verified and incorporated into the state-of-practice of design. INTRODUCTION The stability of underground excavations is traditionally assessed through analytical solutions based on the lower bound theorem of plasticity (Atkinson and Potts 1977; Mühlhaus 1985) or the limit equilibrium method (Anagnostou and Kovári 1994; Messerli et al. 2010). These methodologies depend on the tunnel geometry, certain ground parameters and the support pressure. When conventional construction methods are used, the internal support pressure is an abstract representation of the combined effects of partial excavation, ground reinforcement, and the different support elements. The use of closed-face tunnel boring machines (TBM) changed this perspective, as the magnitude of pressures acting on the excavation boundary could be controlled in a more direct way. In front of the TBM the ground is excavated as the cutterhead rotates and the cutting tools scrape the ground from the tunnel face while additives are injected to condition the material. Water, polymers, bentonite, and foam can be used as additives under different conditions (Thewes et al. 2012). The loosened ground with additives, herein referred to as the mixture, flows through the openings at the cutterhead and into the excavation chamber. This mixture is kept pressurized to support the face."
