This research involves the investigation of phase transformations in the platinum-chromium coated system. Single-layer 0.1 µm platinum coatings were deposited via electron beam deposition on 99.98 percent pure chromium substrates. Specimens were subjected to systematic heat treatment in a vacuum furnace at 900°C for up to 20 hours. Phase formation and the changes in surface morphology were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).Both CrPt and Cr3Pt phases are formed during heat treatment for different times at 900°C. Significant changes in the morphology of this coated system were detected after heat treatment at 900°C for 20 hours.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of Bachelor of Engineering-Mining Venetia Mine, an open-pit diamond mining operation in the Limpopo Province of South Africa, currently has a mixed haul truck fleet consisting of Caterpillar 785B and C; 789C; modified 793D and 793D. Even in an ideal situation these trucks have different cycle times, which causes queuing at the loading area and their different speeds cause bunching on the ramps, leading to higher overall cycle times and lower productivity. This problem was identified but the root causes of the problem were not investigated and quantified. A time and motion study on the haul trucks was thus undertaken to measure actual cycle times and compare them to ideal cycle times as well as to observe any reasons for deviations. Ideal cycle times are partly evaluated on the basis of simulation and partly from production optimization expert input. Several areas that affect production were identified and these include: haul road conditions, the control room, dispatching programme and dispatching data management, as well as truck-shovel matching. The investigation was important in establishing control parameters for haul fleet operation since time spent queuing is production time lost, which defers waste tonnes to later in the life of mine, thus decreasing the tempo at which kimberlite is exposed.

The occurrence of fracturing due to high stress levels is a major factor in hangingwall stability in deep level gold mine stopes. However, rock falls cannot be the result of these fractures alone. Rock falls can result only from the occurrence of unstable rock blocks defined by the interaction of the stress induced fractures and naturally occurring geological planes of weakness. These planes include bedding planes and joint set planes. However, there is a general lack of information on the characteristics of these planes (orientations, spacings and lengths)?it does not appear that any such systematic and quantified information, if collected, has been published. To remedy this situation to some extent, joint mapping exercises have been carried out in several geological environments in two gold mines. The data collected on joint geometry included orientation, spacing and length, and this information is included in the paper. In addition, the paper describes the use of the data collected to evaluate the potential for rock falls and the probability of failure of stope support

The re-use of waste water from coal preparation plant tailings is always desirable, but is generally problematic in terms of solid-liquid separation. Dewatering and disposal of coal slurry at a high percentage of moisture poses a major technological and environmental challenge to mining and mineral processing industries world-wide. Characterization and flocculation of these coal tailings reveals that the separation of fine coal tailings depends on factors such as size distribution, slurry viscosity, zeta potential, pulp density, circuit design, plant operating parameters, and the behaviour of solid particles in an aqueous medium. The present study was carried out on -600 mm coal tailings collected from a coking coal preparation plant of Jharia Coalfield, India, using anionic flocculent. Characterization studies revealed that the zeta potential was highest (-44 mV) at a pH of 9.0, the size range of the particles was 1.1?700 m, and the average ash content was 62.57%. Flocculation studies were performed at different solid concentrations, pH values, and polymer dosages. The results indicated an efficient settling rate of 178.15 mm/min at 8% solid (w/w) at a flocculent dosage of 32.50 g/t solid. The turbidity of the clear liquid obtained was 7.42 NTU.

The 1,000 MW Hydro Power Station Masjed-e-Soleiman (formerly called Godar-e-Landar) in Iran is under construction since 1992. The rock engineering aspects of the major underground structure, i.e. the powerhouse cavern shall be reported on in detail. The geotechnical investigations are described and results given. The results of several geotechnical analyses are presented. The designed and executed rock support is given. A description of the monitoring systems and typical measurement results obtained during and after excavation are presented. The lessons learnt during construction of the Stage-I powerhouse cavern were applied on the extension of the powerhouse cavern, which is to house an additional 1000 MW. Details regarding the unexpected behaviour of the Mudstones are given. Die 1000 MW Wasserkraftanlage Masjed-e-Soleiman (vormals Godar-e-Landar genannt) befindet sich seit 1992 in Bau. Dieser Artikel berichtet im Detail über die felsbaulichen Aspekte der Untertagebauwerke, insb. der Maschinenkaverne. Die geotechnischen Untersuchungen werden beschrieben und deren Ergebnisse wie die Ergebnisse verschiedener Berechnungen werden präsentiert. Die geplante und die ausgeführte Felssicherung wird angegeben. Die eingebauten Überwachungseinrichtungen werden beschrieben und typische Ergebnisse während des Aushubs und danach werden dargestellt. Die Erfahrungen beim Aushub der Kaverne der Stufe I wurden beim Entwurf der Kaverne der Erweiterungsstufe II, die weitere 1000 MW beherbergen wird, berücksichtigt. Details zum unerwarteten Verhalten des Schluff-/Tonsteins werden angegeben. La centrale hydroélectrique de Masjed-e-Soleiman (dénommée anciennement Godar-e-Landar), d’une puissance de 1.000 MW, est en construction depuis 1992. Un rapport détaillé sera présenté sur les aspects relatifs à la construction en enrochements de l’aménagement souterrain principal, à savoir la caverne abritant la salle des machines. Une description des investigations géotechniques réalisées y est fournie ainsi que les résultats correspondants. En outre sont présentés les résultats de plusieurs analyses géotechniques. L’ancrage dans la roche tel que projeté et réalisé est présenté. Une description des systèmes de contrôle ainsi que les résultats de mesures typiques obtenus au cours des travaux d’excavation sont donnés. Les leçons tirées lors de la construction de la Phase 1 de la caverne de la salle des machines furent appliquées à l’extension de la caverne de la salle des machines, qui doit abriter une unité supplémentaire d’une puissance de 1.000 MW. This paper characterizes the copper cycle, that is, the flows of copper entering and leaving the African economy over a one-year period (1994). The major flows over the entire life-cycle of copper are examined; these include production (mining, milling and refining), fabrication of semi-products and manufacturing of finished products, use, and the waste management system. The results reveal that substantial amounts of copper (of order705 Gg/yr) are mined in Africa; of that amount, about 70 per cent is exported following processing, 18 per cent is utilized by African fabricators, and 12 per cent is discarded. The flows of copper products from African fabricators and product imports from other continents exceed product discards by large amounts. This difference, about 0.25 kg Cu/capita/yr on average, is added to in-use stock, largely as wire, plumbing tube, and in electronics. Some 65 per cent of the copper in discard flows is contained in electrical and electronic products, where it is relatively easy to collect and process for reuse. About a third of the copper discard flows known is recycled. The actual percentage is almost certainly higher because of informal (and unrecorded) recycling. Much of the remaining discarded copper is diluted into the municipal waste stream, where recovery and recycling are probably not economically justified. "SynopsisThe purpose of this paper is to introduce an innovative approach to risk management in surface mining operations, namely, positive risk. Traditionally, risk management focused on mitigating losses (negative). Positive risk, on the contrary, reverses the approach and focuses on exploiting a project’s inherent benefits (positive).The inability to accurately determine project objectives during the project planning phase and the failure to achieve those objectives during the execution phase is a major problem for any project management in the mining environment.The advance of computer aided design models for mine planning enables mining engineers to examine various options within a very short time. Employing positive risk management combined with drivers-based risk management when evaluating these options provides an ideal opportunity to investigate areas for improving the mining project’s profits. Furthermore, harnessing positive risk returns during the planning phase contributes immensely to the successful achievement of project objectives.Mining has inherent business risks, which can appear overwhelming when considering the risks associated with a mining project schedule, cost, and safety or resources, etc. The question is – how to manage risks in a surface mining environment, and what process methodologies, work methods, processes, and standards should be used when considering the surface mining risks. Applying the principles of positive risk management to manage surface mining risks is not only relevant, but definitely beneficial to mining projects and to the mining industry as a whole.It would be beneficial for risk managers and risk professionals to understand the roles of positive risk ‘drivers’, also known as ‘propitious attractors’. Identifying, analysing, estimating, and understanding the propitious attractors, their behaviour and their influence on project risk events helps considerably during the planning and execution phases. The theoretical and practical knowledge of both sides of the risk – the downside risk (negative risk) and upside risk (positive risk) – can add substantial value to any organization when downside risk is adequately mitigated and upside risk is beneficially exploited."

"An investigation into pillar cutting was carried out at a platinum mine on the western limb of the Bushveld Complex. The focus was on crush pillar design and implementation in order to ultimately improve the compliance percentage for pillar cutting. The major findings from the investigation suggest that the pillar cutting problem lies with the implementation of the design rather than the design itself. Observations of the practical issues underground that prevent good pillar cutting were made. After these issues had been identified, recommendations to rectify these problems and a few other issues identified during the investigation were provided. The recommendations are aimed at improving the pillar cutting compliance and reducing the likelihood of pillar bursts or pillar runs, which will ultimately create a safer mining environment. In recent times, there has been criticism of the minerals industry over the lack of quantifiable boundaries between inferred, indicated, and Measured resources. A recent initiative through the United Nations aims to try to converge the mineral resource classification systems. Since the oil and gas industry uses a probabilistic approach to defining reserve boundaries, it is appropriate to introduce a similar statistical methodology for minerals. The Venmyn Variance Tower has been developed based upon traditional statistics to utilize historical and ongoing information in order to quantify variance of geological and chemical parameters and the boundaries and logic for quantitative mineral resource classification. It is proposed that a less than 50% variance from the mean of all sample parameters is required to achieve the classification threshold to define an inferred Resource whereas between 20-10% is needed for an indicated Resource and less than 10% variance from the mean is needed to declare a Measured Resource. These limits are similar to those used by the oil and gas industry, and it is suggested that these thresholds be adopted as an industry standard to ensure consistent quantitative reporting. While this process is intended to use statistics of an orebody to provide quantifiable and defendable boundaries, it cannot be carried out unless the geology of the mineral deposit is understood and the borehole samples can be categorized into appropriate populations for which the statistics are valid. This means that competent geologists are always required to work with and understand the implications of the Variance Tower results. This paper is intended to form the basis of a series of publications that establish a process to take mineral projects along a quantifiable and logical development path. Hence, no specific field example of the practical application of this process is given here.

Equipment selection in mining engineering is one of the most important decisions that affects the mine design, production planning and economic parameters in open pit and underground mining. Mine planning engineers generally use their intuition and experiences in decision making. Mostly, linguistic variables (the weather is raining, soil is wet, etc.) come into question and decision-makers may not know how these variables are computed. Since the advent of the fuzzy set theory, these uncertainties are easily interpreted in the decision-making process. The development of computer technology and programming of colloquial language with expert systems have considerably reduced decision-makers? burden. This paper reviews the development of a computer programme software called EQS (EQuipment Selection) that automates equipment selection in mining engineering using fuzzy set theory. The EQS with an introduction of the concepts and theories of multiple attribute decision-making, the fuzzy set theory, and EQS applications to mining industry problems with case studies are presented

The use of valuable minerals is a necessity to maintain a modern society. Not only the iron, aluminium, coal and oil that are used in large quantities, but also the uranium, copper, vanadium, tungsten, antimony and many others play an essential role in the bigger picture of our modern civilisation. Minerals occur in a form and in places determined by a long history starting at the dawn of creation. Over billions of years the elements have combined in wondrous combinations and structures. They have been broken up by massive explosions, movements in the earth's crust and erosion by wind and water. They have been restructured and recreated in even more configurations by the application of heat and pressure, leached by and exposed to new chemical compounds. The result is that most valuable minerals are found in impure form and mixed up with other, less useful waste material. 2. Mineral Beneficiation The processes used for the purification and enhancement of an ore, to satisfy the needs of downstream applications, are collectively referred to as mineral beneficiation. Mineral Beneficiation starts in the mine where only that portion of the ore, that can be economically processed, is selectively extracted. It may also include ore blending, to ensure a more consistent feed to the following stage of valuable mineral recovery. The next stage in mineral beneficiation is the liberation of the valuable minerals from the gangue. This is achieved by blasting, crushing, milling and grinding down to an adequately fine grain size to facilitate good separation. Separation can be achieved by a variety of different techniques. ?Screening coarse from fine particles is an easy method if the valuable mineral is dominant in a certain screen fraction. ?Magnetic separators can differentiate minerals on the basis of their difference in magnetic susceptibility. ? Electrostatic separators differentiate on the basis of electrical conductivity. ? The differences in density are exploited in spirals and jigs. ? Particular surface properties provide a separation technique in flotation. ?The selective sorption properties of a collector medium are another option.

A study carried out in the iron basin of Lorraine (North-East of France) highlighted the existence of under-oxygenated and noxious gas emissions (carbon dioxide, radon…) in vast built-up areas related to former mine workings. Site investigations showed that the gas flow was mainly due to natural thermal air circulation between old mines and external atmosphere. The main hazards associated with this flow of gas and its potential accumulation in confined volumes in buildings are asphyxiation and intoxication. A further study is in progress in order to better understand the origin of the gas generation within the old iron mine workings. Following the first hypothesis, the carbon dioxide emission is mainly due to the specific hydro-geo-chemical process associating the pyrite oxidation with the acid dissolution of carbonates. Outotec?s direct leaching process is an atmospheric leaching process for sulphidic zinc concentrates. The direct leaching process, based on special leaching reactors developed by Outokumpu, is the most economical way to produce electrolytic zinc. The production scale applications of the process realized so far are in use at Boliden?s Kokkola and Odda zinc plants. A new full-scale application of Outotec?s direct leaching process will be started in 2008 in China. The process is integrated to the existing production plant, replacing part of the old production facilities by modern technology. Besides high zinc extraction the plant expansion and modernization offers also indium recovery, iron precipitation and solution purification processes. The process equipment includes tailor-made reactors designed on the basis of the work and experience of Outotec research center. The evolution of thermodynamic models of molten salts and slags, starting with Temkin in 1948, has culminated in today?s sublattice models. These modern models have permitted the development of large thermodynamic databases of model parameters, which can be used to calculate and predict accurately the properties of multicomponent solutions. The model parameters are mainly obtained by the critical evaluation and optimization of available thermodynamic and phase equilibrium data for binary and ternary subsystems. The models are then used to estimate the properties of multi component slags and salts from these assessed binary and ternary parameters. When used in conjunction with thermodynamic databases for solids and solid solutions (salts, oxides, sulphides, metals, etc.), other liquid solutions (such as liquid metals),and gases, these databases permit the calculation of complex multiphase equilibria in multicomponent systems, with applications in a wide variety of industries. These calculations can be performed with general commercial software for Gibbs energy minimization, which can also be incorporated into process simulation software packages. Tarkwa Gold Mine is owned by Gold Fields Ghana, IAMGOLD and the Government of the Republic of Ghana in a 71%, 19% and 10% ratio. The mine is operated by Gold Fields Ghana. This large, low-grade, open pit, gold mining operation is located in Tarkwa, in the Western Region of Ghana, approximately 320 kilometres by road, west of Accra, the capital of Ghana, West Africa. In the Financial year ended June 2007, the operation mined a total of 108 million tons of which 22 million tons was ore. The mined ore is processed through three gyratory crushers supplying two heap leach pads (north and south) and a carbon-in-leach (CIL) plant. Before the 6 Sigma project commenced, the current fragmentation was resulting in sub-optimal feed size to these crushers. It was decided to use 6 Sigma methodology to improve the fragmentation. A defect was defined as a fragmentation analysis indicating less than 95% passing 750 mm. The objective was to improve fragmentation in order to achieve a constant throughput to the north heap leach crusher of 1500 t/h, a 5% increase in pit loading efficiency and a 50% decrease in rock breaker hours, equipment damage costs and in-pit sheeting costs respectively. However, this was not to be achieved at the expense of grade control as Tarkwa is exploiting a low grade, high volume deposit and therefore ore dilution must be kept to a minimum. This paper is intended to take the reader through the various 6 Sigma phases of the project (define?measure?analyse ?improve?control), which have resulted in a 10% reduction in loading times, of which half has been attributed to improved fragmentation, as well as a substantial increase in blasted stocks. The focus has been on both drilling and blasting parameters as both processes had to be taken into account. These parameters are technical but personnel factors were also identified and dealt with as they arose. In order to measure the impact of any change in the process parameters on the fragmentation size distribution, cameras have been acquired. One has been installed looking into the bowl of the north crusher and the other one was dedicated to field observation, of individual blasts. Both are used for ongoing fragmentation analysis. At Tarkwa, mining efficiency is strongly dependent on good fragmentation as well as the presence of unblasted ?toes? on the pit floors. Crusher throughput depends on an acceptable ore fragment size. Compliance with plan for actual hole depths was temporarily monitored by manual hole dipping, but this is now being replaced with a fully automated drill data management system developed by Sandvik and Modular Mining. The Six Sigma methodologies, using control charts based on data collected in the field, allowed the mine to improve methods for the control of blasted material. It also enforced the implementation of a quality control programme encompassing the entire drill and blast process.

The distinction between real estate ownership and that of interests in the property is fundamental to the appraisal of mineral properties. This distinction affects the nature and understanding of security of tenure and, consequently, the perception of what constitutes fair value. Legal matters are a particular concern because of their influence on security of tenure, ownership definition and use restrictions. The dynamics of the market and the complex interrelationships between the factors of production define value at a specific point in time for the bundle of rights, interests and assets that constitute a mineral property. Because each mineral property is unique, physically immobile and of a wasting nature, its usefulness to its owner and society must be optimized. The US Appraisal Institute (2001) classified the forces that affect land use as the cultural, political and economic attitudes of society. These forces culminate in laws that often dictate the purposes for doing appraisals. Once the legal definition of the asset is understood, valuers can decide on the valuation process that will support the final valuation approach.

The effect of the amount of cold reduction and annealing temperature on the evolution of the texture of AISI 441 steel is reported. The steel was cold rolled by 62%, 78%, and 82%, followed by isothermal annealing of each sample at 900°C, 950°C, and 1025°C for 3 minutes. The crystallographic texture was determined by Phillips X?Pert PROMPD texture diffractrometer. Microstructures were characterized using optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy (SEM).The results show that sample that received 78% cold reduction and annealing at 1025°C presented the highest Rm-value and lowest ?R-value, which would enhance its deep-drawing capability. In addition, this sample showed the highest intensity of shifted ?-fibre, notably {554}<225> and {334}<483>. It can therefore be concluded that the ?-fibre, which favours deep drawing, is optimal after 78% cold reduction and annealing at 1025°C.

South Africa?s Mining Industry operates in an uncertain world. The industry is buffeted by problems regarding retrenchments, unemployment, low productivity, rising costs, volatile exchange rates, commodity prices and government regulations. With these uncertainties facing the decision makers, what does applied technology offer the industry?s management? Modelling languages with risk analysis have been available for decades, but in the past their use has been very expensive, requiring large mainframe computers and lots of computer time. Today, PCs and laptops have incredible power, which makes interactive risk analysis affordable and viable for all enterprises, whether small or large. ?What is risk analysis? ?What is Monte Carlo simulation? ?What kinds of computer models need to be created to use risk analysis and Monte Carlo simulation effectively? This paper addresses these questions and illustrates, with a practical example in the mining industry, how risk analysis techniques can be used to support decisions in the climate of uncertainty.

Sishen Iron Ore Mine previously used only A-grade material (>60% Fe in situ value) from the pit for beneficiating in the DMS plant to a final product grade of 66% Fe in lump and 65% Fe fine ore. The B-grade (between 50% and 60% Fe) and C-grade material (between 35% and 50% Fe) were stockpiled separately, owing to the inability of the existing DMS plant to beneficiate material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3. The ability to beneficiate the B-grade material at densities higher than 3600 kg/m3 was evaluated, and air-pulsed jigs were found to be techno-economically feasible and value maximizing. The beneficiation of B-grade material would add to the existing DMS production of 28 Mt/a, with no additional mining cost and only limited costs for the handling of waste and B-material. The objective of the Sishen Expansion Project (SEP), i.e. the jig plant, was to produce 10 Mt/a of saleable product with six modules to the set physical and chemical specifications by 2009. During the start of construction, it was decided to add another two jig modules to the plant to increase production to 13 Mt/a. During commissioning and ramp-up the shortcomings and advantages of the jigs were fully experienced and understood, resulting in many changes to optimize jigging performance..

When an underground excavation is created near to an instrumented measuring location, deformation at the location increases. The characteristics of this deformation increase, as well as the duration of the influence caused by the adjacent excavation, is dependent on parameters such as opening geometry and measuring location. In this study, neural networks were applied to investigate the deformation increase and the influence of each parameter on the deformation change derived from extensometer measurements at the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) site in New Mexico, USA.
