Lebowa Platinum Mines has been in operation since the late 1960s and is a relatively small producer compared to Anglo Platinum?s other operations. The mine has never had substantial capital investment to expand its production scale even though its resource base is estimated in excess of 100 years at current mining rates. It is forecast that the mine will become unprofitable after 2008 due to the workings of the ageing infrastructure, the Merensky Reef operations being further from the shafts, decrease in productivity and increase in operating costs. In order to reverse the forecast decline in operational inefficiencies and profitability the replacement of the Merensky Reef operations at Vertical and UM2 shafts with the development of a 120 Ktpm Brakfontein Merensky Reef Mines is in progress. This paper covers the operational readiness framework developed from the control budget estimate and outlines an integrated business process adopted to ensure that the requirements of the investment proposal are met. The operational readiness framework, which addresses the transition process, will ensure that at operational start-up, all appropriate operating systems, procedures, information and legal requirements are in place, whereas the business integration process will aim to develop and sustain an organization with the appropriate infrastructure and workforce equipped with the necessary skills to meet Brakfontein?s requirement, and where possible embark on an optimized accelerated production initiative to ensure that the objectives of the investment proposal are sustained. It is common practice in the mineral processing industry to use hydrocyclones for particle classification. However, classification in the UG2 platinum circuits using the hydrocyclone poses major challenges due to the differences in density between silica and chromite, the two major components of this ore. Silica,-the PGM carrying component, has an average density of 2.7 and the barren chromite component has an average density of 4.5. When conventional and flat bottom cyclone are used there is a misplacement of particles due to differences in density leading to inefficiencies in the classification by size. As a result of the density effect, coarse silica reports to the overflow, resulting in loss of recovery, and fine chromite reports to the underflow, resulting in loss of milling capacity and unnecessary production of fine chromite. A classifier based on a different concept was required in the classification of UG2platinum ore. The three-product cyclone, which is a hydrocyclone with two concentric vortex finders to produce three distinct products, has been tested in the UG2 ore application and indications are that misplacement of particles due to differences in the component densities can be minimized through the use of this unit. Industrial and pilot plant trials were conducted and indications are that the three-product cyclone can be installed to selectively produce a middlings stream that can be screened using Pansep screens to provide a screen oversize, which is predominantly coarse silica that can be preferentially reground to recover the PGM values contained in the coarse silica.

The Pooncarie Project is located in the Murray Basin region of Australia. This region is a potential new mineral sands province. Due to the geological environment and the lithology of the deposit, these deposits have some technical challenges that need to be addressed prior to their successful development. Within the Pooncarie Project the Ginkgo deposit will be developed first. The technical challenges it presents include its geographical isolation, the requirement to remove substantial quantities of overburden as well as the processing issues raised by the highly weathered nature of the ilmenite family of minerals. Ore characterization bench scale testwork and bulk sample pilot plant programmes have been carried out and the data obtained used to design flowsheets for both the wet plant and mineral separation plant circuits with the flexibility to enable these plants to handle the variable heavy mineral assemblage. In addition to the solving of the processing challenges, technical issues such as removal of overburden for the minimum unit cost, the use of hyper saline water in the dredge pond and the provision of infrastructure, have had to be addressed. None the less, the orebodies making up the Pooncarie Project have many positive features including low slimes content, good rutile and zircon grades and the ability to recover most of the ilmenite family of minerals into acceptable TiO2pigment feedstocks. The development of the project is set to proceed with the establishment of mining operations on the Ginkgo orebody feeding a mineral separation plant at Broken Hill. The initial shipment of products is expected to occur in early 2005.

South Africa is reliant on coal for the generation of almost all the electricity used in the country, and several large industrial concerns such as Sasol are also coal based. Research relating to the mining, beneficiation and utilization of coal is important in order to ensure the optimal exploitation and use of coal within the country. The Fuel Research Institute (FRI) of South Africa was established in 1930 to investigate all aspects of coal beneficiation and utilization in South Africa. The FRI went on to conduct world-class research and in 1957 a pilot coal preparation plant was constructed in Pretoria to enable large-scale practical experimentation. The pilot plant played a pivotal role in the establishment of South Africa?s low ash coal export project. Political and economic factors contributed to the eventual closure of the FRI and South Africa experienced a period of about 10 years between 1990 and 1999 during which very little public coal preparation research was done. This changed for the better towards the end of 1999 when Coaltech 2020, a collaborative research program was established. Participants included the CSIR, universities, the government and the major coal producers. Coal preparation research conducted under Coaltech thus far include dewatering and drying of fine coal, size classification of ultra-fine coal and dense-medium fine coal beneficiation. Currently, the Coaltech focus is on the beneficiation of low-grade coal reserves and is investigating existing as well as new techniques that can be utilized to provide cost-effective beneficiation of low-grade raw coals and reject coals.

Jigging is a process of particle stratification in which the particle rearrangement results from an alternate expansion and compaction of a bed of particles by a pulsating fluid flow. The rearrangement results in layers of particles that are arranged by increasing density from top to bottom of the bed. The particles, in addition to the vertically expanded and compacted bed motion, move continuously, horizontally across the supporting screen and helped and influenced by the feed material that is introduced at one end. Following the particle stratification, the particle bed is physically ?cut? at a desired horizontal particle density plane to separate the desired product from the less dense gangue material. The issue of correct pulse characteristics (shape, amplitude and frequency) for the optimal metallurgical stratification of air pulsating jigs has been the subject of much discussion over the years. The accuracy of the dissymmetric stratification depends on the control parameters and the mechanical condition of specific equipment used. This paper will touch on some of the control and mechanical parameters affecting the separation efficiency.

"In atomic emission and atomic absorption spectrophotometry, the sample is heated to a high temperature and thereby decomposed into atoms and ions that absorb or emit visible or ultraviolet electromagnetic radiation at energies characteristic of the elements involved. The flame test is a very simple form of this technique. The yellowing of a flame by the addition of salt, for example, occurs because the sodium in salt emits strongly in the yellow portion of the visible spectrum. These methods are especially useful for low concentrations of metallic elements in both qualitative and quantitative analysis.Interference on Iep-OES has not always been considered a serious problem, especially in the beginning, when compared with Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy. This was due to the euphoria created by the new technique. It meant that criticism was subdued. The Iep was vastly superior to the Atomic Absorption technique, that the interferences suffered by the Atomic Absorption technique dwarfed the little interferences suffered by the rep-OES technique. This is how rep-OES has had a reputation as an interference free technique."

Chalcopyrite represents the most important copper resource and is currently mainly exploited using pyrometallurgy. Bioleaching is an environmental-friendly and economic alternative to conventional mineral processing technologies. The technical feasibility of stirred tank reactor bioleaching of copper ore concentrates using acidophilic iron-/sulfur-oxidising bacteria is proven, however, often incomplete due to inefficient chalcopyrite dissolution. A decoupling of bacterial growth from bioleaching activity in one bioreactor by adjusting appropriate temperatures for both process steps allows for almost complete chalcopyrite dissolution. Separation of copper and recovery of other metals from the PLS was possible by implementation of different biological and chemical techniques. The Ferredox process has been proposed to treat limonitic laterite ores for cobalt and nickel recovery by means of anaerobic reductive dissolution with autotrophic, acidophilic bacteria. As a modification, aerobic reductive dissolution of laterites with acidophilic bacteria has shown economic and environmental advantages over anaerobic reductive dissolution. The reductive bioleaching technology has the potential to increase metal recovery in existing mines, and transform unexploited ores and limonite stockpiles into valuable resources. Large volumes of quantitative geochemical data, presenting a formidable interpretation task to geologists, are generated in the course of exploration drilling for new ore deposits. The incorporation of geological expertise into computer programs developed for the interpretation of this data would improve the speed and accuracy with which it is interpreted. A detailed analysis of the geochemical log interpretation problem, together with a survey of relevant research in Artificial Intelligence and petroleum well- logging techniques, confirms, that artificial intelligence, particularly as developed in the fields of expert systems and pattern recognition, provides techniques for implementing such data interpretation programs. In addition, it provides data analysis techniques significantly more powerful than those currently applied to geochemical data, and very appropriate to the hypothesise and test' character of mineral exploration problem-solving. The conversion of raw borehole log data to meaningful higher level geochemical entities, in terms of which geological reasoning may take place, is a critical step in applying these techniques to log data analysis. A method of achieving this conversion as an exercise in signal-to-symbol transformation is presented.1

The objective of this study was to develop, install, and test a small underground mobile refrigeration plant (MRP) to deal with some of the real problems associated with mine cooling in an operating mine. The requirement for cooling the underground environment is discussed with particular emphasis on the need for this method of cooling, with the concomitant benefits. The research investigated current methods of cooling and reasons for previous failures in MRP. Both static and dynamic simulations were conducted to increase the confidence level under operating conditions. Implementation and testing, resulted in ?lessons learnt? requiring modifications, which are documented. Actual results have been recorded. These results have proved that significant cooling via MRP is feasible. Main benefits include positional efficiency, cost per kilowatt of cooling and cooling opportunities for remote hot areas of a mine. Finally, a proven technology is now available for large-scale implementation in the mining industry. Now the ventilation engineer has another system of cooling, which can be utilized in the quest to create an occupational environment, which meets the physical and mental health requirements of the worker.

One of the important facets of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy is its service to its members. One way of achieving this objective is by pursuing an active branch structure. In this Spotlight, Richard Beck, Holder of the Regional Development Portfolio, gives the aims of the Institute's branches, with a short note on each branch prepared by the regional chairman. Aims of the Branches: The primary aims of the Branches of The South African Institute of Mining and Metallurgy are those of the Institute itself: to further the interest of its members, to uphold the status of the mining and metallurgical profession, and to promote the image of mining and metallurgy. Beyond these 'high' objectives, the branches have a special function in providing a more intimate relationship between the Institute and its members. The branches enable members who live outside the Johannesburg area to participate in the affairs of the Institute to an extent that would not otherwise be possible and that they themselves can define. This is achieved through the holding of social events, colloquia, and visits.

Threshold blasting involves the use of small amounts of high explosive to break and fragment hard rock without having to evacuate mining personnel. The method is easily assimilated and effective in rockbreaking, but requires rigid control on drilling, charging and timing. Current underground trials are aimed at fine-tuning the amount of explosive energy and blast hole geometry to allow the firing of multiple sets of shot holes in a continuous manner. Through correct procedures, the after-blast fumes, dust and fly rock can be contained so as to provide a safe working environment. Threshold blasting hugely reduces the volumes of explosives used in mining and brings to maturity the potential of the process begun by Alfred Nobel when he introduced nitroglycerine, and later dynamite, to mining. Its key contribution is its enabling of continuous mining operations with well understood and relatively low cost technologies. The use of batch blasting, employing large burdens holds the greatest potential for delivering high flow rates of ore at minimal cost. There is good potential for rapid evolution of the concept.

Published South African fatality and injury statistics for mine accidents are investigated. Where possible, the South African statistics are compared with those of other countries. Commonly held attitudes to the South African accident experience are also examined. Analysis reveals that the published accident rates present a more favourable picture than the rates actually experienced by underground workers. In addition, fatality rates in South African underground gold and coal mines do not differ significantly and have remained stable over the past decade, although the injury rates have decreased rapidly. No evidence was found that this is due to improved safety, and a comparison with international fatality and injury data suggests that it is not. The underground fatality rate for South African coal mining is, on average, eight times that of the UK, four times that of all EEC coal mines taken together, and over double that of the USA. Despite the unreliability of the injury rates, much has been made in South Africa of their rapid decline, an emphasis that appears to be misplaced.

ABSTRACT. A retrospective analysis of some geomechanical classifications for rock masses is presented. It is shown that estimates of rock mass strength according to geomechanical classifications developed, e.g., for construction of tunnels and for ore mines can differ very much. Development of specifically oriented classifications for rock masses with certain geomechanical properties is required. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG. Es wurde eine retrospektive Analyse einiger geomechanoschen Klassifikationen von Gesteinsmassiven durchgefuhrt. Es idt aufgezeigt worden, dass die Bes-timmung der Festigkeit des Massivs nach geomechanischen Klassifikationen, die z.B. fur den Bau von Tunnelen und fur Erzbergwerke entwickelt wurden, sich um etliche Male unterscheiden kann. Es ist eine Entwicklung von spezialisierten Klassifikationen fur Gesteinsmassive mit bestimmten geomechanischen Eigenschaften erforderlich. RESUME. Il a ete fait l’analyse retrospective de certaines classifications geomecaniques des massifs de roche. Il a ete montre que les estimations de solidite du massif suivant les classifications geomecaniques etudiees, par exemple, pour la construction des tunnels et pour les puits de minerai peuvent differer en quelques fois. Il est donc necessaire d’etudier les classifications specialisees pour les massifs aux proprietes geomecaniques particulieres.

For a number of years the steel tube and pipe industry has worked on resolving problems of product quality. These have largely been resolved and new products have been developed to take advantage of new developments. To fully coordinate market acceptance guidance on use of galvanized piping was also required. This was largely achieved locally in 2004 with the publication by the SABS of ARP 060 - Guidance on the use and application of hot dip galvanized steel piping for the transportation of potable water in South Africa. Use of this document is not easy however and a need to have a simple computer model to assist the specifier was identified. Working with a major tube and pipe manufacturer this is now being developed and this paper will provide the background to the model?s development and its intended use. There is still a need for a partner Code of Practice on the performance of galvanized piping in buried conditions and the need for this will be highlighted together with current available information.

The Grootegeluk coal-processing plant treats 3 kt of raw coal per hour to produce a middlings fuel coal and a coking coal fraction with ash contents of 35 and 10 per cent respectively. The plus 0,5 mm fraction is treated by heavy-medium processes, the final top size of the coal being 15 mm. About 400 t of minus 0,5 mm coal per hour is subjected to froth flotation. The routes originally considered for the processing of this fine coal were froth flotation, shaking tables, heavy-medium cyclones, and water only cyclones in combination with froth flotation. The results from tests on the fines arising from a small-trial open-cast mine are discussed. When the froth flotation route was decided upon, further tests were conducted on the selection of the equipment most suited to the particular requirements of this coal and the rest of the plant. Tests using different types of flotation cells and dewatering equipment are discussed. During the commissioning, several operational problems were encountered, and the work done to find the best solutions is discussed.

Deep gold exploration such as is used for Witwatersrand gold deposits is both expensive and time-consuming. This paper provides quantitative guidelines as to the economic optimum number of boreholes and deflections within each borehole for a certain reef characterized by its variability pattern and depth below surface in order to maximize the level of confidence for a fixed drilling budget or to minimize the total drilling cost for a given level of confidence. Portions of the Basal, Vaal, and Elsburg Reefs that show a wide range of variability (sample logarithmic variances of 0,63, 1,05, and 2,06 respectively) are examined at depths below surface ranging from 1000 m to 4000 m over a simulated mining property covering 7000 ha (7000 m by 10000 m). It is concluded that four intersections per borehole are optimum in al the cases considered, which cover the majority of current Witwatersrand exploration, with the exception of the highly variable Elsburg Reef at depths of 1000 m and 2000 m, where boreholes with one and two intersections respectively should be preferred.

A simple method for the application of excess shear stress (ESS) analysis to the mining of planar reefs is examined. The potential for seismicity associated with mining is expressed as the calculated increase in ESS on a regular grid of points 50 m above the reef, and is compared with observed seismicity around a deep-level, relatively geologicaly-undisturbed gold mine. Thirty regions were studied, involving over 2000 seismic events with magnitudes greater than 1,5 on the Richter scale and associated with almost 2 million square metres of stoping. The total seismicity, measured either as the number of seismic events or as the total radiated energy, corelated more closely with changes in ESS than with ERR. The incidence of rockbursts also favoured the ESS model. Corelation coeficients of around 0,8 for seismicity and ESS indicated that the assumptions inherent in the method used are collectively reasonable. The total seismicity in each region was found not to be strongly controlled by the presence of dykes and faults, although numerous individual seismic events were located close to such features.

The washability characteristics of fine South African coals were measured and were found to be well characterized by an M-curve having the equation Z = aQb exp(cQ) x dQ, where Z is the ash content per 100 units of total feed and 0 is the mass yield. Parameters a, b, c, and d were determined for 23 different samples of coal from important coal seams in the main South African coalfields in the size range 0,0025 to 1 mm. The relationship between ash content and relative density was determined and correlated by means of two linear relationships. This characteristic behaviour was explained in terms of the liberation of macerals and the different association between the mineral mater and the two major macerals vitrinite and inertinite. The results obtained in this study can be used to calculate the expected performance of an ideal separation process, and can also be used as input for the simulation of real beneficiation plants. An example is worked through in detail to illustrate the method of calculation.

Raise-boring experiences in the gold mines of the Anglo American Corporation Group by J. W. Wilson M.Sc., M.I.M.M., F.S.A.I.M.M., M.A.I.M.E. and P. C. Graham M.Sc. (Eng.) Gold mining is being carried out at ever-increasing depths in South Africa. For reasons of safety and human comfort, it is becoming imperative for raises to be developed by means other than conventional drilling and blasting. Raise-boring is an attractive alternative method. Initial raise-boring experiences in South African gold mines showed disappointingly high costs due to the abrasivity and difficulty of drilling Witwatersrand quartzites. Consequently, a research and development project was instigated with the objective of making raise-boring an economically viable technique in hard abrasive rock. A Robbins 61R raise-borer was made available to the Research and Development team and a number of raises have been drilled. During these trials two advances in cutter design were tested. This paper presents the results obtained, including drilling costs, and provides details of the equipment used.

Applying non-explosive expansion material (NEEM) is one of the safest methods for rock fracturing, especially in a hard rock quarry. An experimental study was conducted to determine the pressure exerted by NEEM in a hole, which is necessary for analysing rock fracturing, particularly in a numerical modelling. Stress distribution was developed in a thick-wall cylinder in order to measure the tangential strain on the external boundary. In the experiments, nine pipes of different materials and varying diameters were selected and then loaded internally with a general type of NEEM. Through electrical strain gauges, the tangential strains were recorded on the external boundary of the pipes. The results obtained from these tests and existing data from previous researchers were utilized for the statistical analysis. A new experimentally-derived formula is proposed for determining the pressure exerted by NEEM by multiple parameter regression with a high correlation coefficient. The proposed model has a nonlinear form with three independent parameters i.e. the hole diameter, the time, and the modulus of elasticity of the material.
