(Member) The iron charged to the basic oxygen furnace at the steel plant of Highveld Steel and Vanadium Corporation has a relatively high sulphur content. Considerable emphasis is therefore placed on the reactivity of the lime. An investigation of the lime used at the steel plant showed that its reactivity had deteriorated considerably both during transport from the supplier (Northern Lime Company) and during storage and handling at the steel plant. The deterioration on the steel plant is the more severe, and is due to hydration and carbonation. Rapid deterioration is a characteristic of highly reactive lime when exposed to the atmosphere. Plant tests showed that the desulphurization efficiency decreases with a decrease in the reactivity of the lime. The addition of slag rich in manganous oxide to the furnace considerably improved the efficiency of desulphurization that can be achieved with limes of lower reactivity and with lime that has deteriorated. A decrease in particle size of lime of lower reactivity greatly increased the desulphurization efficiency. Less lime of higher reactivity is required for the same degree of desulphurization to be achieved. Lime of higher reactivity gives rise to slags with lower ferrous oxide contents and hence the steel yield is increased.

After the milling and flotation of the platinum bearing ore, the flotation concentrate is electrically smelted in 6-in-line electric arc furnaces and the resulting furnace matte treated in Peirce Smith converters to remove the iron. The iron-free (less than 1% Fe) converter matte is granulated and sent to the base metals and precious metals refineries for further processing. During the smelting and converting processes two distinct gas-strength gas streams are produced: ?The Peirce Smith converter off-gas contains 4%?9% SO2which is treated in a conventional sulphuric acid plant to produce 94% H2SO4. ?The electric furnace off-gas contains 0.9% SO2which was (until September 2002) vented through a 91- metre high stack to atmosphere. In October 2002 Impala Platinum commissioned a SULFACID® plant at its smelter in Rustenburg, which recovers the SO2from the electric furnace off-gasses into a weak sulphuric acid solution. The SULFACID® technology utilizes wet activated carbon to oxidize the SO2toSO3. The SO3reacts with the water on the catalyst and is washed off the catalyst bed as a sulphuric acid solution with up to 13 wt. H2SO4. The plant operates at 60ºC and at atmospheric pressure. The SULFACID® technology is widely used in the pigment industry. This is, however, the first application of the technology on electric furnace off-gas. An advanced real-time monitoring system called the tapblock diagnostic system (TDS) has been developed. The purpose of the TDS is to help furnace operators manage the safe operation and economical maintenance of furnace tapblocks. This system is an evolution of the current practice of using historical records and operator interpretation to assess the ?health? of a tapblock. The main parameters affecting tapblock health are heat removal capacity and refractory wear, and these are currently difficult to assess in situ except in a global way. By using monitored and operating data together with predictive numerical modelling and multivariate statistical methods, real-time tapblock performance is assessed relative to expected performance. A state indicator in the form of a green, yellow, and red light is used by furnace operators to monitor the tapblock performance and health status during operation. Access to historical operating data and the provision of diagnostic functions allow for probable health degradation events to be deeply investigated. A recent opportunity to evaluate the actual performance of a first generation TDS installed in the KIVCET furnace at Teck Cominco?s Trail Operations showed that a reasonable estimate of tapblock health was made. However, the evaluation also found that some areas of refractory wear were missed, and a new mechanism affecting refractory wear was discovered that was not previously known. This has reinforced the belief that there is a need to develop improved methods of monitoring so that data used to define the health of the tapblock is more comprehensive and accurate.

The following notes have been compiled to assist authors in the preparation of papers for presentation to the Institute and for publication in the Journal. All papers must meet the standards set by the Council of the Institute, and for this purpose all papers are referred to at least two referees appointed by Council. STANDARDS FOR ACCEPTANCE To merit consideration papers should conform to the high standards which have been established for publication over many years. Papers on research should contain matter that is new, interpretations that are novel or of new significance and conclusions that cast a fresh light on old ideas. Descriptive papers should not be a repetition of well-known practices or ideas but should incorporate developments which would be of real interest to technical men and of benefit to the mining and metallurgical Industry. In some cases a well prepared review paper can be of value, and will be considered for publication. All papers and particularly research papers, no matter how technical the subject, should be written with the average reader of the Journal in mind, to ensure wide interest. The amount of textbook material included in a contribution should be the minimum essential to the argument. The length of a paper is not the criterion of its worth and it should be as brief and concise as possible, consistent with the lucid presentation of the subject. Only in very exceptional circumstances should a paper exceed 15 pages of the Journal (15 000 words, if there are no tables or diagrams). Six to ten pages is more normal. NOTE: Papers in the Journal are printed in 10 point type, which is larger than the 8 point type used on this page. For special publication Council may decide on page sizes smaller than A4 used for this Journal. The text should be typewritten, double-spaced, on one side only on A4 size paper, leaving a left-hand margin of 4 cm, and should be submitted in duplicate to facilitate the work of the referees and editors. Orthodox sequence Title and author's name, with author's degrees, titles, position. Synopsis. Index, only if paper is long and involved. Introduction, including a brief statement of conclusion. Development of the main substance. Conclusions, in more detail. Acknowledgements. References. Title: This should be as brief as possible, yet give a good idea of the subject and character of the paper. Style: Writing should conform to certain prescribed standards. The Institute is guided in its requirements by: Collins, F. H., Authors & Printers' Dictionary-Oxford University Press. Hart, H. Rules for Compositors and Readers. Humphrey Milford (familiarly known as the Oxford Rules). Fowler, H. W. & F. G. The King's English-Oxford University Press. General: A few well selected diagrams and illustrations are often more pertinent that an amorphous mass of text. Over-statement and dogmatism are jarring and have no place in technical writing. Avoid the use of the first person, be objective and do not include irrelevant or extraneous matter. Avoid unnecessary use of capitals and hyphens, while punctuation should be used sparingly and be governed by the needs of sense and diction. Sentences should be short, uninvolved and unambiguous. Paragraphs should also be short and serve to separate basic ideas into compact groups. Quotation marks should be of the 'single' type for quotations and "double" for quoted matter within quotations. Interpretations in the text should be marked off by parentheses ( ), whereas brackets [ ] are employed to enclose explanatory matter in the text. Words to be printed in italics should be underlined singly. For small capitals they are to be underlined DOUBLY and for large capitals TREBLY. Abbreviations and symbols are laid down in British Standard 1991. Abbreviations are the same for the singular and plural, e.g. cm for centimetre and centimetres, kg for kilogram and kilograms. Percentages are written in the text as per cent; the symbol % is restricted to tables. A full stop after an abbreviation is only used if there is likely to be confusion of meaning. Metric System: The Systemé International d'Unites (S.I.) is to be used for expressing quantities. This is a coherent system of metric units derived from six basic units (metre, kilogramme, second, ampere, kelvin, and candela), from which are derived all other units, e.g. the unit of force is the newton (N) for kilogramme metre per second per second (kg m/s2). Always use the standard metric abbreviations. Commas must not be used for separating groups of digits. For ease of reading digits should be grouped in threes counting from the decimal point towards the left and the right. Illustrations: Drawings and diagrams are to be in black India ink and should be about 18 cm wide. When submitting graphical representations avoid a fine grid if possible. Curves should be in heavy line to stand out. Lettering too should be bold as a reduction in size is often involved in the printing process. (A single column is 8.5 cm wide.) Numbering of tables should be in Roman numerals: I, 11, etc. and figures in Arabic numerals: Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc. (Always use the abbreviation for figure.) Photographs should be black and white glossy prints. As a guide to the printer the author should indicate by means of notes in the typescript where tables and figures, etc. are to appear in the text. Paragraphs: A decimal system of numbering paragraphs may be used when the paper is long and complicated and there is a need for frequent reference to other parts of the paper. Proof correction: Galley proofs are sent to authors for the correction of printers' errors and not for the purpose of making alterations and additions which may be expensive. Should an author make alterations which are considered excessive, he may be required to pay for them. Standard symbols as laid down in British Standard 1219C should be used. SYNOPSIS It is most important that the synopsis should provide a clear outline of the contents of the paper, the results obtained and the author's conclusions. It should be written concisely and in normal rather than abbreviated English and should not exceed 250 words. While the emphasis is on brevity this should not be laboured to the extent of leaving out important matter or impairing intelligibility. Summaries simplify the task of abstractors and therefore should present a balanced and complete picture. It is preferable to use standard rather than proprietary terms. FOOTNOTES AND REFERENCES Footnotes should be used only when they are indispensable. In the typescript they should appear immediately below the line to which they refer and not at the foot of the page. References should be indicated by super-script, thus. . .1 . . .2. Do not use the word Bibliography. When authors cite publications of other societies or technical and trade journals, titles should be abbreviated in accordance with the standards adopted by this Journal. GENERAL The Council will consider the publication of technical notes taking up to three pages (maximum 3 000 words). Written contributions are invited to the discussion of all papers published in the Journal. The editors, however, are empowered by the Council to edit all contributions. Once a paper or a note has been submitted to the Institute, that document becomes the property of the Institute, which then holds the copyright when it is published. The Institute as a body is, however, not responsible for the statements made or opinions expressed in any of its publications. ABSTRACT The recently introduced concept of negative taxation complicates estimation of the distributable profit of certain South African gold mines, and an assisted mine could operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. A simple diagram is presented from which the approximate working profit or loss, taxation payable or tax credit received, and the distributable profit of an assisted mine can be estimated directly for any combination of the four main variable operational factors: tonnage milled, recovery grade, unit cost and capital expenditure. INTRODUCTION The effects on the working profits of South African Gold mines caused by changes in unit working costs, recovery grade, tonnage milled and capital expenditure are readily estimated. For normal tax- and lease-paying mines the distributable profit is related to the working profit and the latter is a commonly accepted comparative measure of the profitability of an operation. However, the recently introduced concept of State assistance in the form of negative taxation1, i.e. a tax credit, for mines with a life of less than eight years complicates such estimates. A requirement of State assistance is that an assisted mine must lower its normal pay limit by 16 to 20 per cent, and it will be possible for a mine to operate at a working loss and yet produce an overall profit for distribution amongst its shareholders. In the case of an assisted mine it is therefore necessary for management to judge the effects of changes in unit costs, grade, etc., in terms of distributable profit instead of working profit. This will require repeated calculation of tax to be paid or tax credits that will be received under the numerous possible combinations of the four main variable factors. However, with the aid of the diagram illustrated in Fig. 1, it is possible to assess at a glance the practical effect of these variables on the distributable profit of an operation not subject to tax on the normal formula, or small mine formula, with sufficient accuracy to decide whether a detailed analysis is required. USE OF THE DIAGRAM From the central point 'X' in Fig. 1, a range of tonnages milled per annum has been plotted along the north-bearing axis, a series of costs per ton milled in the northwestern quadrant, recovery grades in the northeastern quadrant, and capital expenditures in the southwestern quadrant. Starting from the tonnage milled per annum, a line is drawn east and west across the two northern quadrants up to the points where it reaches the desired cost- and grade-lines. From these points two north-south lines are drawn into the southern quadrants. A further line is drawn to the east from the point where the western north-south line crosses the desired capital expenditure. Designing and optimising flotation circuits are critical for mineral beneficiation plants, and therefore several procedures have been published. The modelling of flotation circuits with the objective of design and optimisation is problematic in that different approaches are used for the modelling of flotation units and regrinding units. Usually, regrinding models are based on particles characterised by their size, while flotation models are based on species characterised by fast and slow classes. The relationship between particle size and liberation can be used, but it requires laboratory studies that are time-consuming and costs are high. It is therefore not surprising that few studies on flotation circuit design and optimisation include flotation units and regrinding units simultaneously. In this paper, it is proposed to model the regrinding stage using species characterised by fine-slow, medium-fast, and coarse-slow flotation species. In deep, the regrinding model is derived from a population balance approach based on flotation species. The fraction of these species at the feed and product of the grinding unit is determined by flotation tests. Then, based on these data, the model parameters can be determined by a regression estimation procedure. A local ore was used to validate the model. Although stainless steels have been used to a limited extent in the South African mining industry, the metallurgical development of 3CRI2 has presented materials engineers with a viable alternative for certain materials-handling applications. The various types of wear involved in these operations are described, and an explanation is given of how 3CRI2 is able to offer advantages, particularly in wet sliding applications. Certain applications result in various types of abrasive wear, and the performance of 3CRI2 in these areas is described.

The South African coal-mining industry uses a uniform safety-factor formula for non-squat pillars, incorporating a coal-strength constant that was derived empirically by Salamon and Munro in the 1960s. The constant is 7,2 MPa. Since that time, collapses of pillars at relatively high safety factors have occurred in the Vaal Basin. Analysis of the post-1960s' collapses indicated that the strength constant for the Vaal Basin is 4,5 MPa. A crude method for the prediction of the minimum life span of pillars in the Vaal Basin is presented.

Recent research into the prediction of mining-induced seismic events by the monitoring of small microseismic events at Western Deep levels Gold Mine is described. Measurement and interpretation techniques and results are presented. It was found that the occurrence of the larger events near longwall faces on the Carbon leader reef is preceded for some hours by an increased rate of microseismic emission and spatial concentration of the microseismic events in the zone of eventual failure. The research is currently being expanded with the aim of producing a practical rockburst early-warning system.

An account is given of the development of a relatively simple model that describes the kinetics of the absorption of gold cyanide on activated carbon. The model is based on the treatment of the carbon solution interface as a homogeneous boundary across which gold is transported at a rate determined by the rate of mass transport to and from the interface. Rate equations derived from this model describe the results of various kinetic experiments under continuous or batch conditions in the laboratory and on operating pilot and full-scale plants.

The history of development of analytical techniques for the determination of elastic behaviour around tabular excavations, is examined briefly. The design of a completely digital system, which appears to afford considerable improvements in speed, accuracy and versatility compared with existing analogue methods, is described in detail. The practical application of this system is illustrated by means of an actual underground problem. The results are presented, not in the form of specific solutions to the mine's problems, but as indications of the versatility and scope of the new method.

The paper addresses pipe flows of aqueous medium-sand slurries at velocities lower than the deposition-limit velocity. Laboratory test results including measurements of particle concentration distributions are used in order to describe a flow with a (pseudo-) linear concentration gradient above a stationary bed. Particle dispersion within the flow is evaluated and a stratification-ratio equation is formulated, estimating a portion of contact load in the flow. The formula is incorporated in the proposed predictive model for the hydraulic gradient for a medium-sand flow above a stationary bed.

The practice of ilmenite smelting in electric arc furnaces has been researched and published over the last few decades. An issue that has not been addressed is the understanding of the properties of ilmenite smelting reductants, and linking these properties to the subsequent smelting behaviour in the furnace. The reduction mechanism of ilmenite smelting is not fully understood, but it is believed that the Boudouard reaction plays a role. "The objective of any mining company is to sustainably maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life-of-mine (LOM). The expected NPV over the LOM is calculated based on a mine plan, yet the actual value realized by the mining company depends greatly on the level of intertemporal execution against the mine plan. Consequently, a major key performance indicator (KPI) that is often overlooked in open pit mining, due to a greater focus on temporal KPIs, is the degree of spatial compliance to the mine plan. Such focus sometimes leads to short-term actions being detrimental to long-term plans. In this paper we describe the development and implementation of a spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach for an open pit mine. Application to a case study open pit iron ore mine in South Africa indicated a significant improvement in the spatial mine-to-plan compliance, from 69% to 94% over a three-year period from 2014 to 2016. These results indicate that implementation of the proposed spatial mine-to-plan compliance reconciliation approach can contribute positively to improving the level of spatial execution and assists in improving the alignment between short-term, medium-term, and LOM plans.IntroductionThe objective of any mining company is to maximize the net present value (NPV) throughout the life of mine (LOM). An account is given of the performance of a 37 MVA electric-arc .furnace in which bottom stirring with inert gas by an indirect-contact stirring-plug system was applied. The system, which was developed and patented by Thyssen-Stahl AG, and which is the first inert gas stirring system to be installed in South Africa, was commissioned in January 1992. Initial problems were experienced due to the blockage of stirring plugs by molten steel. The causes of these malfunctions are examined, and an account is given of how they were overcome. The system is described and evaluated. A comparison with direct-contact stirring systems shows why Iscor Vereeniging Works considered it to be more suitable for their Vaal Melt Shop. The results show that, through the successful application qf this technology, Iscor Vereeniging Works has achieved an annual cost saving of more than R2,5 million.

A simple argument shows that it is impossible for the flight of a rod in contact with a litter bar in a rotary mill to be initiated at that point on the upside of mill rotation when all the forces acting on the rod are in equilibrium. The argument was confirmed experimentally in a study showing that the lift of litter bars is a function of their height, that the rod velocity at the point of departure has a significant radial component, and that the subsequent flight of a rod is along a parabolic trajectory as predicted by elementary mechanics. A quantitative account of the observed effects, which is based on a dynamic theory of the sliding interaction between rods and litter bars, revealed interesting properties of the motions of rods down the surfaces of litter bars when the latter are in uniform circular motion during the rotation of a mill.
