The gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed includes a complex multiphase fluid-particle system; different complex exchanges significantly affect the stability of the fluidised bed. To elucidate the characteristics of fluidisation in a gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed, this study used experimental performance tests to obtain the static density characteristics, and the attachment and flow characteristic of the dense medium. The results indicate that the bulk density of the dense medium increases first and then decreases with the increase of particle size. The airflow rate difference is used to quantify the wall attachment characteristics of dense medium and the average pressure gradient in the axial direction of the bed is approximately 20 Pa/mm under the fluidisation results. At the same settlement location, with the decrease of fluidisation number, the settlement velocity of large and small particles becomes slower, the boundaries of settlement displacement and location probability are gradually disrupted, and the falling velocity of particles with a radius of 20 mm is faster than that of materials with a radius of 15 mm. This work also established a theoretical basis for regulating the stability and separation characteristics of gas-solid dense-phase fluidised bed. A novel agglomeration process has been developed, utilising a concentrated water in oil emulsion as a binder. The binder is typically 95 wt% water, the remainder being an organic phase containing kerosene and the emulsifier— sorbitan mono oleate (SMO) in equal mass portions. The binder can selectively agglomerate hydrophobic particles in less than 7 seconds. The agglomeration has proven to be highly effective in recovering any particle of virtually any size, provided the particle is hydrophobic. The approach has previously been applied to coal, magnetite and silica. In the paper, sodium isobutyl xanthate (SIBX) and its much longer chain version, potassium tetradecyl xanthate (C14X), were used separately as collectors to selectively agglomerate chalcopyrite from the ore. Xanthates attach to metal sulphides, thus hydrophobising sulphide mineral particles. Chalcopyrite is a sulphide mineral; however, it hydrolyses quickly in the presence of water. Ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) was used to remove the oxide layer formed at the surface of the mineral particles after wet grinding, leaving behind a freshly generated metal sulphide surface. After the EDTA treatment, the ore particles were quickly conditioned at an optimised pH as well as collector concentration and agglomerated. The agglomeration achieved a copper recovery of 75% within 7 seconds, consistent with the recovery achieved by flotation over much longer time scales. Pyrometallurgical smelters utilise tap-holes, through which liquid metal, matte and/or slag are tapped at regular intervals. However, tap-hole failures can have a devastating impact on smelters, which includes loss of equipment, human life and business interruptions. Contributing factors to tap-hole failures include poor and/or incorrect refractory material selection, including tap-hole clays. The functions of tap-hole clays in smelters include their ability to be extruded and drilled with ease at the end and beginning of a tap, and their ability to resist chemical wear due to molten metal and slag during tapping. Mintek is currently developing methods of evaluating properties of tap-hole clays with a specific focus on workability, and wear mechanisms of clays due to ferrochrome alloy and slag. Of particular interest to this study was the characterisation of various tap-hole clays. This paper evaluates the chemical and phase chemical properties of three different tap-hole clays. The bulk chemical composition of the tap-hole clays was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy, proximate analyses and combustion methods. The bulk phase compositions and specific phase chemical compositions were studied using quantitative X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyses techniques. Various morphological parameters that affect the flotation recovery of sphalerite were modelled and optimized using the response surface method (RSM). The effects of roughness value, shape factor, and collector concentration were investigated using the central composite full design method. The results were evaluated by analysis of variance. The optimum roughening time was found to be 25minutes, the optimum roughness value was 2.9071 μm, and the optimum collector concentrationwas 0.001 M. Using these values, a flotation recovery of 98.01% was obtained. Similarly, in shapefactor studies, the optimum grinding time was 15 seconds, the optimum roundness value 0.7421, and the optimum collector concentration 0.0009 M, which resulted in a flotation recovery of 94.30%. The average error between the optimization results and the experimental results was estimated to be less than 6%, and the R2 values were greater than 90%. The study shows that RSM can be effectively applied in finding the economic optimum condition for obtaining maximum flotation recovery with minimum reagent consumption.

"SAMPLING: THE IMPACT ON COSTS AND DECISION MAKING1. INTRODUCTIONFor years those in the minerals industry have been taking samples to assist them in making decisions; whether they be about investing billions of rand in a new mining operation, or simply whether a truck load of mineralised material should go to the mill or the waste dump, - we need a sample to help us make our decisions. This paper emphasises the importance and significance of sampling as a process, some of the associated technical problems and some of the advantages, especially in the light of traditional approaches that has usually left mine sampling to the least educated and lowest paid individuals on the mine. Perhaps the most important aspect that requires attention is the variability, usually measured in terms of precision, that tends to infect the sampling procedures. Francis Pitard 12 has stated: ""There is no such thing as reliable feasibility studies, unbiased ore grade control, accurate environmental assessments or effective process control, if you cannot identify and minimize the seven (ten) major sources of sampling variability. "" It is these ten sources of sampling variability and the way they arise that are briefly investigated. Variability is measured in terms of variances and rather than being self-compensating, there is good evidence to indicate that they are in fact additive at every step in the sampling and analytical process."

Conventional PGM matte smelting requires the presence of a certain quantity of base metal sulphides in order to collect the platinum group metals in a molten sulphidic matte phase in the furnace. Furthermore, the quantity of chromium oxide in the feed materials is controlled in order to avoid the build-up of high-melting chromite spinels in the furnace. Mintek has developed a process for smelting difficult PGM-containing feed materials that contain low amounts of sulphur and/or high amounts of chromium oxide. A DC arc furnace is used to provide the appropriate conditions to generate an iron alloy that collects PGMs very effectively, leaving extremely low residual quantities of PGMs in the slag. Various feed materials have been treated successfully in furnace campaigns running at power levels up to 1.5 MW. The longest of these campaigns was run continuously for more than four months, treating more than two thousand tons of materials such as low-grade concentrates, revert tailings, and converter slag. The campaigns demonstrated the robustness and versatility of the process, and proved that it is possible to sustainably produce a PGM-containing alloy and discardable slags containing an average of less than 1.4 g/t of PGMs over the entire campaign. In most auriferous hydrothermal deposits, gold is preferentially associated with pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals, with higher economic gold values noted for the latter and arsenian pyrite minerals. In this paper, surface (Cryo-XPS) and solution (EDTA extraction) analysis were used to characterise pyrite and arsenopyrite minerals under different aqueous conditions involving electrokinetic study and collector interactions to better understand ways of improving the separation of pyrite and arsenopyrite. The evidence showed higher surface oxidation at solution pulp pH values in the range of 4-11 for arsenopyrite relative to pyrite. The observed highest ratio of pyrite to arsenopyrite selectivity was 1.7 at collector concentration of 50 g/t and decreased with an increase in collector concentration. Because of its superior properties, stainless steel has been widely used for many applications. Nonmetallic inclusions can influence the quality of stainless steel products. A set of samples was used to track the response of inclusion composition during processing of a heat of titanium-bearing 18% chromium steel, from deoxidation after decarburization, to the solidified slab. The oxide inclusions responded as expected to additions of deoxidizers and calcium treatment, changing from silica to alumina and spinels, and then to calcium aluminates. The samples confirmed that titanium nitride can nucleate on liquid calcium aluminate during steel solidification.

In most exploration or mining grade data-sets, the presence of outliers or extreme values represents a significant challenge to mineral resource estimators. The most common practice is to cap the extreme values at a predefined level. A new capping approach is presented that uses QA/QC coarse duplicate data correlation to predict the real data coefficient of variation (i.e., error-free CV). The cap grade is determined such that the capped data has a CV equal to the predicted CV. The robustness of the approach with regard to original core assay length decisions, departure from lognormality, and capping before or after compositing is assessed using simulated data-sets. Real case studies of gold and nickel deposits are used to compare the proposed approach to the methods most widely used in industry. The new approach is simple and objective. It provides a cap grade that is determined automatically, based on predicted CV, and takes into account the quality of the assay procedure as determined by coarse duplicates correlation.

The results of coal sink and float tests are plotted as washability curves. Analysis of these curves indicates the most effective method by which the coal can be cleaned. Sink and float experiments are samplingdependent, destructive, and use toxic chemicals. The present research introduces an alternative method based on a 3D imaging system called RhoVol, in which the density of individual particles is determined from mass and volume measurements. A quantitative error analysis was conducted on coal sample density measurements obtained by RhoVol, and the main factors influencing the errors identified and investigated. The results show that the drawback of this technique is related to its not being able to detect hidden concavities in the particle, resulting in an overestimation of particle volume. Furthermore, it is difficult to capture the impact of porosity and cracks on the volume of coal particles obtained from 3D silhouette images. This mismatch between the RhoVol data and sink and float test results has led to attempts to apply neural network (NN) and linear regression techniques to produce a fully reliable model for correction and estimation of coal density. The NN approach offers superior predictive capability over linear regression, and the estimated density distribution is in line with the sink and float analysis. The root mean square error in estimation of density using the NN model was less than 0.05 g/cm³.

The Renard kimberlite cluster is located in the Monts Otish region of Quebec, Canada. A Canadian National Instrument (NI) 43-101 compliant resource statement for the Renard kimberlites 2, 3, 4 and 9 and the Lynx kimberlite dyke was first issued in 2008 followed by a Preliminary Economic Assessment and the development of a conceptual mine plan. Following a successful drill program in 2009 that greatly expanded the amount of kimberlite in Renard 2, a revised resource statement was issued in December 2009 comprising 23 million carats of Indicated Mineral Resources and 13 million carats of Inferred Mineral Resources, a threefold increase on the previous estimate. The project is currently the focus of a second Preliminary Economic Assessment and it is expected that a full feasibility and permitting program will commence in 2010 leading to the creation of Quebec's first diamond mine by 2013.

A potential new rare earth extraction process has been suggested (Lazo, et al., 2017) (Lazo, et al., 2018) based on converting the rare earth elements to solid phase rare earth oxalates in an oxalic acid leach. Oxalic acid consumption is a significant issue in the process, therefore to improve the viability of this proposed new extraction method, a process to recover oxalate from the leach solution and recycle oxalic acid is required. A review of the literature and confirmation through thermodynamic analysis of the potential options identified precipitation of calcium or ferrous oxalate as the best potential options. The use of metallic iron to both provide ferrous ions as a precipitant and reduce ferric ions in solution would provide the most economical option, however slow kinetics and unreacted iron created significant issues with this process. The direct use of ferrous ions, while faster and more efficient, produced a precipitate with relatively poor solid/liquid handling characteristics and would require an intermediate stage utilising calcium in regenerating the oxalate. Utilising calcium chloride and oxide created very similar precipitates with better physical properties than the ferrous oxalate and that a reasonable proportion of the oxalate could be recovered before neutralisation of the solution induced precipitation of other phases such as iron oxy-hydroxides and calcium phosphate. The produced calcium oxalate was easily converted to oxalic acid and gypsum via immersion in sulphuric acid. It was also found that there is a significant loss of oxalic acid due to factors other than rare earth oxalate precipitation during leaching. This leads to a maximum oxalate recovery in the range of 50 %.

Pillar strength is affected by pillar shape, but this has largely been ignored in past research studies. Bord-and-pillar layouts are typically designed using empirical strength equations developed for square pillars. Owing to the poor quality of pillar cutting, many hard-rock pillars have an irregular shape and it is not clear how this affects pillar strength. Furthermore, the strength of rectangular pillars in comparison with square pillars is also difficult to quantify. The ‘perimeter rule’ is widely adopted for rectangular pillars, but its applicability for pillars with irregular shapes has never been tested. We used numerical modelling in this study to investigate the effect of pillar shape on strength. An analytical limit equilibrium model of a square and a strip pillar also provided useful insights. For slender pillars, the strength of a long rib pillar is essentially similar to that of a square pillar. In contrast, for rib pillars with a large width to height ratio, there is a substantial increase in strength. The study found that the perimeter rule should not be used for irregularly shaped pillars. Displacement discontinuity modelling, using a limit equilibrium approach, is proposed as an alternative to determine the strength of these pillars.

Recently, coal fly ash has become a potential candidate as a secondary resource of rare earth elements (REE). In this investigation, we studied the recovery of REE from fly ash from a commercial power plant. The specific aim was to assess the technical feasibility of recovering REE from the coal fly ash using conventional preconcentration methods, including gravity separation, magnetic separation, and froth flotation. The experimental results revealed that flotation achieved major gains in REE recovery and upgrading. However, during gravity and wet magnetic separation tests, the bulk of REE reported to the tailings. The results showed significant variations in the performance of the various beneficiation methods investigated. This study has confirmed that existing physical separation methods could be used to recover REE from coal fly ash prior to hydrometallurgical and pyrometallurgical processing, although some challenges persist.

This paper provides a review on coloured gold, platinum, andpalladium intermetallic compounds, and discusses the models thatwere developed to obtain these materials. These compounds have acrystal structure of high symmetry, such as the CaF2or CsClstructures, ensuring distinct electron band structures. Variousexamples of coloured gold, platinum, and palladium intermetalliccompounds are provided. More in-depth discussion is provided on thepurple gold (AuAl2) and yellow platinum-aluminium (PtAl2)compounds with CaF2structure, as well as the purplish-pinkpalladium-indium (PdIn) compound with CsCl structure. Precious metal intermetallic compounds are used in jewellery andprovide a new dimension to design. Some of these compounds havealso found use as barrier coatings on turbine blades for jet engines,and more recently, research has been conducted into their potentialuse as catalysts, electro-catalysts, sensors, capacitors, and fordecorative coatings.

"SynopsisCalcined basic nickel carbonate (BNC) concentrate was smelted in a pilotscale DC arc furnace to produce a nickel metal. The furnace was continuously operated for 12 days (24 hour/day), during which twelve different smelting conditions were investigated, with the major variables being reductant type and feed rate, flux composition and addition, and BNC feed rate.The 200 kW DC arc furnace was operated at power levels between 110 and 165 kW and at a total feed rate of 78 to 96 kg/h, resulting in an average slag and metal tapping temperature of about 1650°C. A total of 7.2 t of BNC were smelted, producing about 5.44 t of nickel metal and 2.94 t of slag. Nickel recoveries of 96.4% and higher were achieved, and the slag nickel content was as low as 0.1%. The major impurities in the metal were iron (mostly from oxygen lancing) and carbon. The calculated feed carry-over was less than 0.85% and the graphite electrode consumption was between 2.8–3.3 kg/MWh.IntroductionOne of the most distinctive advantages of DC open-arc smelting is the ability to process fine raw materials without any major issues with regard to the operability of the furnace, metal recovery, and metal quality. This has been demonstrated in Mintek’s DC arc pilot plant facilities over a period of about three decades (Curr et al., 1983). The materials that have been processed include laterite (Kotze, 2002), chromite fines (Curr et al., 1983), manganese fines (Lagendijk et al., 2010), PGM concentrates (Shaw et al., 2013), electric arc furnace (EAF) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a) and stainless steel (SS) dust (Denton et al., 2005; Abdellatif, 2002a; Goff and Denton, 2004), and petroleum fly ash (Abdellatif, 2002b). The top particle size of such materials can vary from a few millimetres (e.g. laterite) to micrometres (EAF and SS dust). Dusting, whether due to physical carryover of feed or to the arc side reactions, has been proven to be a non-issue. As such, the applications of DC open-arc furnaces have the potential to be extended to other raw materials such as particulate nickel oxide, which has a particle size much less than 100 µm.Nickel oxide is typically produced from laterite ore by sulphuric acid leaching, purification, and precipitation as basic nickel carbonate (BNC) (Rhamdhani, Jak, and Hayes, 2008) or as mixed hydroxide precipitate (MHP) (Mackenzie, Virnig, and Feather, 2006), and finally calcining at moderate temperatures (800–1200°C). The NiO product is very fine, with an average particle size in the range of 10–20 µm and a NiO content of more than 99%."

This paper summarizes a behavioural safety project undertaken in seven quarries in the UK in order to investigate its applicability as a means of raising the standards of health and safety in the UK quarrying industry. A behavioural safety methodology was developed and trialed at two quarry sites in the UK. During the study the number of unsafe acts and minor accidents had decreased and at one of the quarries there was a 95% reduction in the number of working days lost. It was then introduced at a further five sites of varying sizes and within this focused specifically on lone workers as well as behaviours that affected quality and environmental issues. Positive improvements were noted in most of these operations. The project also looked at the effectiveness of health and safety performance indicators. Here, the common lead and trailing indicators for both safety and health that are commonly used by industry were identified. In consultation with the UK quarrying industry these were then used to identify specific performance measurement criteria that can be used by the quarrying sector to measure performance. Following on from this, a quarry specific health and safety management system specification was developed for large and small quarries.

"SynopsisThe physical properties of oxidative sintered pellets produced from typical South African UG2 ore are compared with the physical properties of pellets produced with conventional South African metallurgical-grade chromite ore (from the Lower Group 6 or the Middle Group 1 and 2 seams). A statistical evaluation of the cured (sintered) compressive strengths proved that pellets prepared from UG2 ore are likely to have the same, or better, compressive strength than pellets prepared from metallurgical-grade chromite ore. The cured abrasion strength of the UG2 pellets was also superior to that of the metallurgical-grade pellets. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) backscatter, secondary electron, and elemental X-ray mapping were used to determine the reasons for the general superior strength of the UG2 pellets. The case study UG2 ore also required 13 kWh/t less energy for milling to attain the required particle size distribution prior to pelletization, which can lead to substantial cost savings. Results presented in this paper can be utilized by ferrochromium (FeCr) producers to better quantify the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of UG2 ore for FeCr production.IntroductionChromite, a mineral of the spinel group, is the only commercially viable source of virgin chromium units. Geologically, commercial chromite deposits in the world are found in three forms, i.e. alluvial-, podiform-, and stratiform-type deposits (Murthy et al., 2011; Cramer et al., 2004). Alluvial deposits were formed by weathering of chromite-bearing rock with the subsequent release of chromite and gravity concentration by flowing water. However, these deposits are relatively small and of comparatively minor commercial interest. Podiform-type chromite deposits usually occur as irregularly shaped pods or lenses, and their distribution within a mineralized zone is usually relatively erratic and unpredictable, making the exploration of these deposits difficult and costly (Cramer et al., 2004). Stratiform-type chromite deposits occur as parallel seams in large, layered igneous rock complexes with more regular layering and lateral continuity (Cramer et al., 2004). The largest example of a stratiformtype chromite deposit is the Bushveld Complex (BC) in South Africa, which holds an estimated three-quarters of the world’s viable chromite ore resources (Cramer et al., 2004).Several chromite seams exist in the BC. The seams of economic interest are the Lower Group 6 (LG6), the Middle Group 1 and 2 (MG1 and 2), and the Upper Group 2 (UG2) seams (Cramer et al., 2004). The LG and MG seams are specifically exploited for their chromium content, while the UG2 seam is mined primarily as a source of platinum group minerals (PGMs) (Xiao and Laplante 2004). Extraction of the PGMs from the UG2 ore usually involves the liberation of the sulphide by milling and subsequent recovery of the PGM concentrate through flotation (Xiao and Laplante, 2004). Chromite in the PGM concentrate is undesirable; therefore, PGM recovery circuits are specifically designed to ensure maximum rejection of the chromite to the tailings stream. However, the chromite in the PGM tailings can potentially serve as feedstock for ferrochrome (FeCr) production, after beneficiation to increase the chromium content."

DEM simulations were used in this research to study the screening process of a novel variable amplitude equal thickness vibration screen (VAETVS). The response regularity of mass distribution and granular moving velocity at the different screen panels to feed rate was investigated and the predictive model for the unit area processing load was proposed. The influence of aperture size, the size variance, and the opening ratio on the mass passing-distribution and overall screening performance, respectively, were revealed. The results showed that the response model of the unit area load Ф to the feed rate Q can be concluded as Ф∝0.324×Q. The moving velocity of particles also showed a positive relevance to the feed rate, besides which the passing rate of fine-grained material at the feed end was negatively related to the aperture size, while the case was reversed in the feed end. The increase of aperture variance AV enhanced the passing ability of small particles at the feed end,and reduced the misplaced ratio of the large particles at the discharge end. A better screening efficiency can be obtained when the average aperture size of the entire sieve is 7.5 mm, with the aperture variance of 1 mm between the adjacent panels. When the combination of the opening ratio is 35-35-40, a better screening effect can be achieved. Keywords: Equal thickness screening, DEM, particulate velocity, mass distribution regulation
