Mining can adversely affect water quality and poses a significant risk to South Africa?s water resources. Proactive management of environmental impacts is required from the outset of mining activities in order to reduce this risk. Major strides have been made over the last 7 to 8 years, by both the Department of Water Affairs & Forestry (DWAF) and the mining industry, in developing strategies and management plans for the effective management of water within the industry. This has largely been achieved through the development of joint structures where problems have been discussed and addressed through cooperation. This process, which was started around 1991, has continued through to the present time. The mining sector management strategy has been developed at a number of different levels as follows: ?A detailed Management Plan, that sets out strategic objectives, broad strategies and functional and organizational arrangements. ?Operational Guidelines, that define and document specific operational procedures. ?Technical Guidelines, that define and document best practices for pollution prevention and impact minimization from mining operations. The Technical Guidelines consist of Best Practice Guidelines (BPGs) and Regulations.

Cost analysis of chrome ore reduction is one of the important issues facing ferrochrome producers in today?s competitive environment. Much of this depends on quality and various ratios in the actual ore. The latter can have a direct bearing on electricity consumption and optimum efficiency of the furnaces. While the industry has been successful in reducing costs by designing larger and more efficient furnaces, the role of the optimum blend of ore has perhaps been given less emphasis. This paper will discuss the general specification and metallurgical characteristics of various chrome ores for producing high carbon ferrochromium on industrial scale. By analysing the results obtained from smelting, including chromium recovery and energy consumption, the determining parameters in total cost of ferrochromium i.e. chrome ore; reductant and energy consumption can be optimized. Our study is based on actual experiences obtained from Faryab Ferroalloy Plant over a period of approximately three years.

On scheduled commissioning and effective operation of a solvent extraction circuit relies on getting the design of both the core contact equipment and the peripheral plant right. Experience has shown that poor performance of new plants is frequently a result of ?utility? systems that do not match the requirements of the circuit, rather than the mass transfer equipment itself. Both the operator/owner and designer need to understand the ?complete requirements? for the circuit to get the balance of the design right. This paper reviews generic issues, frequently overlooked or altered during cost-cutting exercises, which have a significant impact on plant performance.

The separation of nickel and cobalt from calcium, magnesium and manganese by solvent extraction using synergistic mixtures of carboxylic acids was studied. Addition of certain viable synergists to commercially available tertiary branched carboxylic acids, such as Versatic 10 (Shell) or Neodecanoic acid (Exxon), produced large synergistic shifts (?pH50) in the pH50values for nickel, and small antagonistic shifts (negative ?pH50values) in the extraction of calcium. Under the initial test conditions used (0.50 M each of Neodecanoic acid and the Mintek synergist, in xylene) a large separation (pH50Ca? pH50Ni= 3.09 pH units) between nickel and calcium in their extraction from 1.00 M sodium nitrate solutions was obtained, compared with only 1.11 pH units in the absence of the synergist. The selectivity series for the extraction of divalent base metals from 0.333 M sodium sulphate solutions by 0.50 M Neodecanoic acid and 0.25 M of the Mintek synergist in C12-C13aliphatic diluent was found to lie in the order (with pH50values in parentheses): Cu(3.42) > Ni (5.08) > Zn (5.58) > Co (5.73) > Mn (6.62) > Ca (7.48) >Mg (8.25). In batch counter current experiments, a simulated leach liquor containing (in gL-1): Ni 5, Mg 5, Mn 2, Co 0.5, Ca 0.5, Cu 0.1and Zn 0.1 was contacted with the mixed extractant in three stages at unit phase ratio and an equilibrium pH of 5.9. The recovery of nickel was 99.9 per cent and that of cobalt was 84.7 per cent, whilst the co-extractions of manganese, calcium and magnesium were 2.7,1.5 and 0.04 per cent, respectively. The recovery of cobalt can be enhanced by employing a slightly higher pH, although this will also increase the extraction of manganese, calcium and magnesium somewhat. Nearly quantitative stripping (99 per cent) of nickel from the loaded organic phase was achieved in a single contact at an organic-to-aqueous phase ratio of 4 using a simulated spent electrolyte containing 39 gL-1sulphuric acid and 33 gL-1nickel,thereby producing an ?advance electrolyte? containing 57 gL-1nickelat pH 3.5. Loading of acid into the organic phase was very slight, amounting to only 0.002 M H+in contact with the above-mentioned spent electrolyte. Anglo Platinum has initiated a project to investigate hydraulic hoisting technology for platinum mines. Hydraulic hoisting systems are categorized as pumping, fluidizing feeder or displacement feeder systems. Positive displacement piston diaphragm pumps are most suitable for pumping systems but they require that the ore be milled prior to pumping. Fluidizing feeders are unsuitable for platinum ore applications due to the large percentage of fines in the ore. The three-chamber pipe displacement feeder has been most widely used for hydraulic hoisting and is the most suitable technology for platinum mines. Eight hydraulic hoisting applications covering pumping and displacement feeder technologies are reviewed. The key factors to be assessed in selecting a hydraulic hoisting system for a platinum mine are discussed. A typical platinum mine configuration will comprise an ore preparation plant (to produce -15mm material through screening or crushing), motive water pump on surface, high pressure water pipeline from surface to underground, ore slurrification plant, three-chamber displacement feeder, and a high pressure slurry pipeline to surface. The water and slurry pipelines are housed in a purpose drilled borehole. A hydraulic hoisting system selection chart is presented. A 150mm diameter system with a 25 MPa pressure rating is required to hoist 60 000 t/m from a depth of 1 200 m. Generic capital and operating costs are presented. A major potential advantage of hydraulic hoisting is that the fines, which contain a high percentage of PGMs, are captured underground and transported directly to the concentrator. Hydraulic hoisting technology is ideally suited to providing supplementary hoisting capacity to existing shafts that have reached the skip hoisting capacity limit. The main advantage for new shafts is the potential to significantly simplify underground rock handling and transportation. All hydraulic hoisting system components are proven. The only risk area is the wear rates of the valves and piping. Current estimates are based on gold ore. The business cases investigated show that the financial viability of the installations are not sensitive to wear rate. Sequential grid mining has been employed as the primary mining strategy at the AngloGold West Wits Elandsrand Mine since the inception of stoping operations from the sub-vertical shaft system in 1988. Little has been published on sequential grid mining as a mining strategy since, and the purpose of this paper is to describe sequential grid mining, its history, its implementation at Elandsrand, and the outcome to date. The results obtained using sequential grid mining have been evaluated from seismic data, productivity statistics, and rock related accident statistics. Comparisons with neighbouring mines namely Western Deep Levels and Deelkraal, have been made to substantiate the improved conditions observed at Elandsrand, and to compare sequential grid mining directly with longwall mining in similar conditions and at similar depths. Sequential grid mMining is shown to be cost-effective, more flexible, and safer than long wall mining in similar conditions, at least on the Ventersdorp Contact Reef in the western part of the Carletonville Goldfield. More work is necessary to establish it as the favoured mining strategy at depths exceeding 3000 metres, and for reefs other than the Ventersdorp Contact Reef.

The earliest authenticated scientific report of the occurrence of platinum in rocks from the Bushveld Complex appears to be by William Bettel on 10th November 1906. Thereafter, prospecting of the chromite-rich rocks for platinum proved frustrating. I suggest that the resurgence of interest shown by Dr Hans Merensky in 1924 resulted from his realization that newly-panned platinum had a different grain size from that in the chromite layers and indicated a different source rock, which he located and it became known as the Merensky Reef.

The discrete Gaussian model is a very popular change-of-support model for estimating block grade distributions. It is designed for a stationary random function Z(x) that is regarded as the transform of a stationary random function Y(x) with Gaussian marginal. It is based on an assumption that is not fully true and thus constitutes an approximation to the exact solution. We examine the effect of this approximation on the modelling of the marginal distribution of block values of a lognormal random function. The initial discrete Gaussian model and a variant of that model are considered.

Paper written on project work carried out in partial fulfilment of B. Eng (Metallurgical Engineering) degree This work was done to characterize the leaching of a uranium containing pulp processed by a South African producer to identify parameters that could be adjusted to increase the extraction of uranium in the existing circuit. Batch leach tests were used to characterize the leach properties and especially the influence of the oxidant concentration on the leaching achieved. It was found that relatively high extraction could be obtained even at room temperature by using a high liquid-to-solids ratio and that increasing the oxidant concentration significantly improved the leaching of the uranium minerals.

Microwave energy has been recently used in minerals processing to speed up the leaching process or to improve the liberation of targeted minerals (Al-Harahshed and Kingman, (2003); Bradshaw et al., (2001)). Applied to the roasting of sulphide minerals, microwaves allow the ?tunning? of calcine types and products quality in addition to the energy savings as opposed to the conventional roasting (Mulaba, 2006). As more than 85% of world zinc is produced through the ?roast-leach-electrowin? route, an attempt was made to optimize cost, energy and product quality for metal extraction process route. The use of microwaves was the alternative process route selected for the optimisation. Pyrite concentrate (0.17% Zn, 0.09% Cu, 35.71% Fe, 43.76% S) and sphalerite concentrate containing 43.81% Zn, 0.37% Cu, 3.86% Fe and 44.39% S were microwave roasted in a multimode cavity of 2.45 GHz with varying power levels and for different durations. The produced calcines were characterized using AAS, XRF, XRD and Mossbauer spectroscopy while the determination of residual Sulphur was used as products quality control tool to ascertain the degree of roasting achieved on the feed. The leachability of the produced calcines in HCl, HNO3, H2SO4 and HNO3 + HCl has been studied in terms of the best leaching yield, process kinetics economics and environmental aspect. With 800 W power for 30 minutes, ZnO and Fe2O3 were formed corresponding to a 70% sulfur removed from sphalerite and 80% from pyrite concentrates respectively. While the roasting of the above concentrates appeared to be a first degree processes, it was noticed that the microwave assisted roasting of sphalerite and pyrite concentrates yielded lower sample surface temperature for a shorter time (i.e.less than 30 minutes) microwave exposition. Longer time (more than 30 minutes) microwave exposure showed a linear increase in temperature in function of power level used. While optimum roasting conditions were found at 800W, 30 minutes, a 10% increase of sulfur removal was noticed while pyrite concentrate was microwave roasted. Sulfuric acid was seen to give higher leaching yield than nitric acid. Zinc dissolution was hindered by the presence of franklinite.

ABSTRACT: Given the current widespread use of numerical models for rock mechanics and rock engineering, and the ‘Technology Road Map’ theme of the Congress, it is timely to consider the key issues in matching numerical models to rock engineering problems. The three main aspects are: a) identifying the mechanisms, variables and parameters that are relevant to a particular rock engineering project; b) establishing the content and mode of operation of a particular code; and c) deciding whether a particular code provides an adequate model for a particular project. We summarise the key issues, highlighting the concept of rock mass domains, validation and the ability to present the results of a modelling exercise. We include three compact numerical modelling case examples to illustrate the points. Finally, we also present a ‘roadmap’ to assist in the process of matching a numerical model to the rock reality. RESUME: Considérant l’utilisation généralisée des modèles numériques en mécanique des roches et en ingénierie au rocher ainsi que le thème du congrès ‘technology road map’, il est opportun d’aborder les problèmes essentiels liés au choix des modèles numériques dans les problèmes ingénierie au rocher. Les trois aspects principaux sont : a) l’identification des mécanismes, variables et paramètres appropriés au projet considéré, b) la définition du contenu et du mode de fonctionnement d’un code numérique donné, et c) la possibilité de décider si un code donné fourni un modèle approprié au projet considéré. Les points clés sont résumés en mettant en évidence les notions de “massif rocheux”, de validation et de capacité à présenter les résultats d’une approche numérique. Nous présentons trois brèves études de cas qui illustrent ces points. Enfin, nous proposons aussi un logigramme pour aider au choix d’un modèle numérique approprié pour représenter la réalité d’un problème au rocher. ZUSAMMENFASSUNG: Im Licht der augenblicklich weitverbreiteten Nutzung von numerischen Modellen in der Felsmechanik and im Felsingenieurbau und unter Beruecksichtigung der Themenstellung des Congresses “Technology Road Map”, erscheint es an der Zeit die Kernprobleme, die sich mit Fragen der Abstimmung der numerischen Modele mit Hinblick auf ihre Anwendbarkeit im Felsingenieurbau beschaeftigen, naeher zu befassen. Die drei wesentlichen Aspekte sind: a) Identifizierung der Mechanismen, Variablen und Parameter, die fuer ein bestimmtes Projekt im Felsingenieurbau von Bedeutung sind; b) die Festlegung des Inhalts und des Modus Operandi eines bestimmten Codes, und c) die Entscheidung darueber ob ein bestimmter Code ein hinreichendes Model fuer ein bestimmtes Projekt ergibt. Wir fassen die wichtigsten Punkte zusammen, heben dabei das Concept der Gesteinsmassen Domaenen (Rock mass domains) hervor, und erarbeiten ihre Beurteilung und die Moeglichkeit diese zu praesentieren in den Ergebnissen einer Model Uebung. Wir schliessen drei Beispiele von numerischen Modellen ein in denen diese Punkte erlauetert werden. Zuletzt schlagen wir eine “Roadmap” vor, um dem Prozess der Abstimmung des numerischen Modells mit der “Felsmechanischen Wirklichkeit” zu unterstuetzen.

I?ve been asked to appraise the global role of coal and mining, and the best place I can think of to begin is with the World watch Institute, which purports to monitor all things global. Last fall the institute?s magazine, entitled World Watch, in a cover story called for a worldwide campaign to outlaw the use of coal before this century?s end. To my mind the article began the campaign. However, the institute had to admit that no such ban will be possible unless there is special help and heavy intervention?that is, novel policies and punitive taxes. I?ll quote directly from the magazine to underscore the point: ?without them the market will continue to deceive us into thinking coal is cheap, abundant and irreplaceable?.

When it comes to sampling theory, a bad sampler is a bad sampler, no matter what, and a sampler is either bad or good. It also is of critical economic importance to tell and understand the difference, especially in a metallurgical plant. In this paper, the grand principles of Sampling Theory are first recalled, then the most popular types of sample cutters for plants are critically reviewed. It is concluded that the industry has a lot of progresses to make in that direction, although improvements usually pay for themselves very quickly.

A mining engineer from South Africa, whose research has taken him to some of the world?s deepest gold mines, is the winner of the St Andrews Prize. Daniel Limpitlaw, 27, picked up a cheque for $25,000 for his dissertation on reversing the damage done by early mining technology, which he claims is partly responsible for blighting the urban environment in many South African cities. Launched in October 1998 by the University of St Andrews and international energy company Conoco, the St Andrews Prize sought practical solutions to environmental problems. It attracted interest from 450 individuals and groups from countries as diverse as China, Pakistan, Canada, New Zealand, Germany, the UK and the United States.

The past decade has seen rapid expansion in the West African mineral exploration environment. This expansion has been largely driven by changes in ?Political climate ?Fiscal and legal regimes ?Exploration approaches ?West African geology. Major regional mapping and geochemical surveys by the UNDP, and the BRGM in the late 1970s and early 1980s laid the foundation for the rapid development of mineral exploration and resources during the past decade. An additional driving impetus was the discovery by native artisanal miners of many significant new gold occurrences at Libiri, Essakan, Bouda and Tirahori, during the great droughts of the late seventies and early eighties.

The production of sulphuric acid from sulphur generates heat. The majority of this heat is recovered as steam and is often used to generate electricity. Heat not recovered as steam is rejected to cooling water systems. The design of the turbine, condenser, and cooling water systems impacts the overall water, energy, and environmental footprint of the plant. This review considers a conceptual 2000 t/d sulphuric acid plant with several alternative cooling water systems. The review utilizes Hatch?s 4 Quadrant sustainable design tool to compare the alternatives on both an economic and a weighted sustainability scale.

Electric furnaces used for smelting and those used for scrap melting exhibit different performance profiles in terms of electrical characteristics. However, the underlying principles are the same for either case. The rationalization of these variables is a major concern for furnace operators and designers. This paper presents the results of a two year study of high speed real time data from a number of electric furnaces around the world, covering a very wide range of design philosophy and product manufacture, to provide a better mathematical insight into rationalizing the furnace operation.

Our purpose is to record and to explain the widely changing numbers of the huge total of black workers on the gold mines of South Africa over the century from 1896 to 1996. These men were recruited from up to twenty territories, and their contributions are examined. The major areas providing labour over this long period have been Lesotho, the former Transkei within South Africa and Mozambique. From 1989 to 1996, for instance, these three areas accounted for over sixty per cent of the total labour force (tlf). Our principal Figure 1 shows the tlf fluctuating through time to reach a peak of 480 000 in 1988. Irregular falls are also documented with the most serious in 1995 to 180 000. Based on this graph we consider the political, economic, sociological and historical reasons behind these changing employment opportunities. These have included external world-scale events such as war or depression, as well as internal changes of national economy and policy. We show the importance for numbers employed of the discovery of gold in the Orange Free State in 1946, the influence generally of the ?Winds of Change? and the firm maintenance by the State of law and order. Varying gold production costs and profitability against high tax rates, allied with increasing wages and a lack of development capital, have led in the last decade to employment falling by fifty per cent, despite an actually higher value of gold output. Finally, this analysis considers the role of the migrant labour system as it affects, and is affected by, conditions in the gold mining industry, with special reference to its less than humane consequences in the numerically dominant territories of Lesotho and Transkei.
