"Introduction Numerous investigators have studied grinding. Each has contributed his bit to a literature that is difficult to correlate. Too many of the results have been transformed into curves with no many ""inflection points"" and ""counterflexures"" that they obscure the issue.Some of the investigators have neglected the very essence of the problem, namely, the power and the amount of material to which a known amount of work was applied. The purpose of this paper is to show the ease with which results can be interpreted when these quantities are duly recognized. Some grinding tests will be given for illustration.Grinding studies are of two kinds: (1) Study of the character of the ore and (2) study of the performance of the machines. Several ores may be crushed by a given machine, or several machines may be used on a given ore. The illustrations given in this report cover both objectives.Grindability Characteristics When the ores are being studied the information sought is grindability characteristics (grain-size distribution) and the grindability (work required to produce new surface) of a group of ores.When the study is of the machines, several machines are used for a given ore or given types of ores, and the grinding performances of the machines are compared by a grain-size study.Table 1 gives the grindability characteristics and grindability of six substances, one of which is coal. The substances are arranged from left to right in progressing order of tons per horsepower-hour. Curves and graphs are not needed for elucidation. The secret of the ease of interpretation is the order mentioned and the similarity of the sizing analyses. Power records must be complete in grinding studies.The grinding device was a ball, plunger, and mortar called the drop weight.' It may be used to advantage when the amount of material to be tested is too small for the orthodox machines.The upper part of table 1 shows the grindability characteristics by the cumulative-sizing analyses. Note how closely the percentage weights agree for a given sieve size. The lower part shows the grindability in terms defined elsewhere. The present paper should be read in conjunction with that paper."

This report is a compilation of results of preliminary concentration tests of seven manganese-ore samples. Six of the seven samples were submitted through the Mining Division, and 1 from Mexico was submitted by H. A. Doerner, formerly chief metallurgist, Region III. These investigations were made to assist development of mineral resources and particularly to aid economical exploitation of marginal or complex ores, from which strategic or critical minerals may be recovered.

This publication contains analyses and related source data for 234 natural gas samples from wells and pipelines in 21 States and 1 foreign country. All of the samples were obtained and analyzed during calendar year 1975 as a part of Bureau of Mines investigations of the occurrences of helium in natural gases of countries with free market economies. This survey has been conducted in the United States by the Bureau of Mines since 1917. In late 1965, the survey was expanded to include foreign gasfields. The analyses published herein were made by mass spectrometer and n special helium analysis apparatus, which are described in Bureau of Mines Bulletins 4862 and 576.3 The results of the investigation of the occurrences of helium are published annually to make the information available as soon as possible to the gas industry and the public in general. Seventeen previous publications have presented the results of 10,831 gas analyses prior to 1975. The first 3, Bulletins 486,4 576,5 and 617,6 contain analyses and related source data on 5,218 gas samples collected from 1917 through 1960. The other 14

The Bureau of Mines collected coal and coal waste aggregate material from two different mine sites to determine their strength characteristics for use in concrete. The concrete would be placed underground as support walls for ground control in adverse conditions or unique mining applications. A standard mix design was established for a "wet" mix using a water-to-cement (w/c) ratio of 1.0 to facilitate pumping into place. Later, material was collected from four more mine sites and used to make 2-by 2-by 2-ft test blocks with the same w/c ratio. A pull-out cone device and borehole shear tester were used to determine the in situ material strength of the test blocks. These techniques will provide a simple and quick way of determining support wall strength in an underground environment. Test results from the pullout cone de-vice showed a good correlation of 0.98 to test cylinder compressive strengths of the same mix. Results of the borehole shear tester were inconclusive.

The Takilma-Waldo copper district in Josephine County, Oreg., was studied by the Bureau of Mines from September 1950 to April 1.951 and from December 1953 to April 1954. Funds for the investigation were provided by the Bureau of Mines and the California-Oregon Power Co., Medford, Oreg., on a cooperative basis. The copper mines in the district are credited with a total production of ore worth $1,700,000. Since 1933 the mines have been unproductive and, except for minor exploration, largely inactive. The history of the district indicates that the copper deposits were mined principally during periods of high metal prices.

This report describes the dropping - mercury electrode , its use in analysis , and the procedure of the Health Division of the Bureau of Mines in determining lead , cadmium , and zinc . The dropping - mercury electrode or polarograph is an electrolytic device , one electrode of which consists of mercury issuing in small drops from a capillary tube . Such electrodes have been in existence for more than 50 years, but they were not used for analytical purposes until about 1922.6/ Developments since have been rapid , especially in Czechoslovakia , Germany , Italy, and Japan and more recently in the United States . A recent bibliography / contains references to, 825 articles issued from 1903 through 1940. In 1939 Kolthoff and Lingane presented the first comprehensive critical review, in English , of the device and its use in analysis . They have recently issued a book on the same subject. Similar information also is included in a recent book10/ by Kolthoff and Laitinen . Much of the information in this and the two following sections on this device and its use in analysis was obtained from these three publications . The use of the dropping - mercury electrode in analysis is based upon the fact that the kind and amount of electro - reducible and electro - oxidizable constituents in solution can be determined from the current -voltage relationships revealed by this electrode or electrolytic device .

The procedure suggested in this report is intended for the use of engineers, esters, accountants, etc., in estimating the cost of chemical-type operations. It is intended to over operating costs, not investment costs, as the latter have been covered numerous other publications. However, as capital investment costs are reflected to a high degree in operating costs, it is important to point out that accuracy of investment costs is highly essential. Therefore, all factors that might be included under plant -capital costs should be considered, such as requirements of shops, employees' housing, etc. The procedure is designed primarily for use in types of chemical oper¬ations, such as the production of synthetic liquid fuels, anhydrous ammonia, and others of like or similar nature. Yet, no attempt has been made to cover the entire chemical industry.

This piper is a continuation of a series of yearly review articles started in 1925 by Thomas Varley. The development of flotation has been rapid, and better understanding of the functions o' flotation reagents has resulted in many changes in the kinds and quantities o reagents used. It is the purpose of this report to present the information in such a manner as to be of value to the milling industry as well as to the manufacturer of flotation reagents. These data have been compiled from a. survey of approximately 250 flotation plants of all classes within the United States. Many of these plants made complete reports of their operations, out others were apparently unable to supply this information in sufficient detail to meet the requirements of this investigation. Although it is realized that the data obtained in this survey are not as full as they should be to render the greatest service possible to the milling industry, it is hoped that succeeding articles will include complete information regarding milling; conditions and recoveries. As in the past, every effort has been made to conceal individual plant operations. RESULTS OF INVESTIGATION Table 1 gives the tons of ore treated by gravity and flotation methods and the concentrates produced as reported by 208 plants. The totals of 77,043,535 tons of ore and 4, 596,640 tons of concentrates from this table compare with totals of 78,973,012 tons and 4,683,972 tons respectively (furnished by the Bureau of Mines, Division of Mineral Statistics), indicating that the milling survey is about 98 per cant complete.

The Federal Bureau of Mines refined chromium from an aqueous electrolytic process in molten sodium chloride-chromium chloride electrolytes. Oxygen and nitrogen contents were reduced by a factor of 10 to 40, but most other impurities were little changed. The product usually contained a little more iron than the feed. Since iron was entering the bath from the iron pot and the graphite liner at a nearly constant rate, contamination of the chromium deposits by it was more serious at low currents and deposition rates. A few runs in an iron cell with a nickel liner yielded chromium containing one half as much iron as the feed, but up to 1.5 pct. nickel. In all cases the anode feed lay in the bottom of the container, which itself was used as the anode connection. With a 12-in. cell, variations in applied voltage from 0.05 to 1.5, in current from less than 10 to over 100 a., and in initial cathode current densities from less than 100 to over 2,000 a./sq.ft. had little or no effect upon the analysis of the metal produced) except for iron content. Changes in bath analysis from 3 to 11 pct. chromium were also without effect. These changes did bring about large differences in the physical forms of the crystals obtained. The thick heavy crystals produced at low voltage and current contained voids which made them difficult to leach free of chlorides. Easiest to leach were the thin leaf-like crystals obtained at around 1 v.

The Bureau of Mines has investigated novel methods of stimulating petroleum production from reservoirs in the Appalachian Region. An important consideration in applying stimulative production methods is the control and removal of solid precipitates from the boreholes of production wells. Where paraffin-base crude oils are produced, as in the Appalachian Region, the accumulation of paraffin may be particularly troublesome. Paraffin deposition is a major production problem that has confronted the petroleum industry for many years. Although considerable effort has been expended by industry and government, a suitable solution has not been found because of the individuality and complex nature of the deposits. Remedial methods used to prevent or remove paraffin fall generally into four classes: (1) Chemical, (2) physical, (3) operative, and (4) combination. Each class has many subclasses that apply to particular problems in different oil- producing areas. Recently, chemical inhibitors and the sonic pump have assisted operators in preventing and removing paraffin deposits. Because these methods are relatively new, their degree of application has not been completely evaluated.

A research program to aid development of improved methods for increased production of petroleum from partly depleted reservoirs is a vital part of the Bureau of Mines effort to effect true conservation of that mineral resource. This report presents results of an investigation to identify the clay minerals within some Appalachian petroleum-reservoir sands, the effect of clay content on the fluid-flow behavior of those sands, and the use of brines in water-flooding operations. Permeability measurements using kerosine, calcium chloride brine, simulated oilfield brine, potassium chloride brine, sodium chloride brine, and distilled water were made on reservoir-rock cores. Clay fractions were separated from sand grains of disaggregated portions of each core sample, and the clay minerals were identified by the differential thermal analysis method. Relations of the permeability to various fluids were developed.

The Bureau of Mines conducted this research to determine the feasibility of using soil redox measurements, a relatively new method in mining geophysics, to locate or define a variety of conditions that are hazardous or otherwise of interest to the mining industry. The method was used in three widely separated areas in an attempt to de- fine subsurface concentrations of methane, the edges of coal-burn areas, and a hydrothermal vein set. Both a description of the method used and test cases are given in this report.

This paper describes the sinking and lining of a 14 foot 6 inch finished diameter shaft down to and into the salt of a typical dome of the Gulf States region. The conditions and nature of the strata encountered divide the work into three distinct sections - that in (1) alluvial surface deposits, sunk through by open caisson methods, (2) water bearing rock, directly above the salt, and in (3) salt. Deposits of iron ore in Judith Basin County, Mont., generally referred to as the Running Wolf deposits, were examined by an engineer of the Bureau of Mines in August 1942. During the Summer of 1943 the Federal Geological Survey made a reconnaissance survey of, the Running Wolf Iron district and also made a detailed study and a topographic and geological map of the eastern end of the district. Two deposits of iron ore at the eastern end of the district were trenched and drilled by the Bureau of Mines during the fall and winter of 1943-44, This report presents the factual data obtained from the trenching and drilling' operations. The iron deposits of thy Running Wolf district are accessible from Stanford, Mont., by 14 to 16 miles of county highway and 2 to 3 miles of rough mountain road or trails (see fig. 1). No shipments of ore have been made from of these deposits. The ore is a replacement of Madison limestone at the contact with syenite porphyry. The contact can be traced for about 6 miles in a general northwest direction. 'At least five. deposits occur along this contact.

The applicability of the "direct method" for determining the methane content of virgin coalbeds was tested. Preliminary results indicate that the direct method, when applied to exploration cores, can be successfully used to estimate coalbed gas content and also approximately predict the total gas emission from a prospective mine located in the coalbed at the exploration site.

The columbite-tantalite mineral series was studied by various instrumental techniques to establish the relationship of density to composition. The samples used were carefully selected to obtain a mineralogical purity of at least 98 percent. Impurities were determined by optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and optical and X-ray spectroscopy. Each sample was analyzed by fluorescent X-ray spectroscopy for iron, manganese, columbium (niobium), and tantalum. The existence of a unique relationship in this isomorphous series permits a simple correlation of the intensity of a spectral line with the concentration of the analytical element.

THE Bureau of Mines was established in July 1910 to conduct research and to establish standards for mining equipment and practices which would conserve human life, natural resources, and property in the mineral industries. Several lists of equipment approved by the Bureau as permissible for use in gassy coal mines have been issued since then. The lists covering all approved equipment except breathing apparatus and explosives have born consolidated into two publications: Bulletin 343. Permissible Equipment Approved to January 1, 1953, and Information Circular 8220, Permissible Mina Equipment Approved By The Bureau of Mines During 1953-62. In situ leach mining operations often encounter difficulty maintaining adequate leach solution flow into the are formation. Swelling and dis-persion of clay particles in the formation are often responsible for this permeability loss. Permeability and leaching tests were done in the laboratory on clayey ores to evaluate a clay-stabilizing polymer's effectiveness in preventing these problems. Test results indicate that treating the ores with the stabilizer could maintain permeabilities two to five times greater than the long-term permeabilities present in untreated ores. Both alkaline (pH 8.5) and acidic (pH 2.0) leaches were used in the permeability-leaching tests. Since in situ leaching throughput rate is directly related to permeability, these results also indicate a potentially beneficial effect on operating parameters such as capacity and injection pressure. To determine the reasons for the success of the clay stabilizers, an investigation was conducted to cieter-mine the effect of the stabilizer on clay swelling and dispersion. Clay-swelling tests indicated that the clay stabilizer reduced clay swelling. Zeta potential measurements made on fine clay particles treated with the stabilizer were compared to measurements made on untreated particles and indicated that the stabilizer was electropositive and, therefore, could reduce the degree of negative charge on the particles and their tendency to disperse or migrate.

The United States Bureau of Mines, in cooperation with the Natural Gas Department of the American Gas Association, has been studying actively for the past several years the flow of natural gas through high-pressure pipe lines. This report deals with that part of the study involving the design off pipe-line systems consisting of lines laid parallel to each other. The lines are referred to as the original line and the parallel line. The paralleling line may or may not extend the entire length of the original line; however, the parallel line is connected at its two ends to the original line. As a result of the large expansion of the natural-gas industry almost all markets within economic distance from the developed gas fields have at least one pipe line supplying them with natural gas. Small increases in the consumers' demand for natural gas can be met usually by increasing operating pressures, but any marked increase in demand necessitates paralleling sections of the existing systems. Lithium is the lightest of all metals, but as it deteriorates rapidly in air it has no structural applications. Alloys of lithium that will float upon water can be made with other light metals, but these ultralight alloys are not useful in aircraft production or elsewhere at present. Alone or alloyed with alkaline earth meals, lithium acts as reining agent on molten metals, and as a minor constituent with other metals it imparts characteristic properties to the allay. Lithium compounds have somewhat wider application in commerce than either the metal or the alloys. They are used in the glass, ceramic, chemical, and air-conditioning industries and less extensively in the optical, pharmaceutical, electrical, and textile industries. The United States is the leading producer anti consumer of lithium ores and compounds and apparently has the largest known ore reserves. The value of lithium ores and primary chemical byproducts produced is relatively small, yet the lithium chemical industry yields products worth hundreds of thousands of dollars each year, owing partly to the high degree of purity demanded by the trade for most finished products and to the low combining weight of lithium. Fortunately, the low-grade ores can now be concentrated economically, and this fact, together with our extensive reserves, assures adequate supplies to meet any reasonable increase in demand. Lithium is listed as essential by both the American and British war agencies, and its military importance may be greatly enhanced.
