The Bureau of Mines is conducting research into the pneumatic recovery of coarse mica and has used this method to produce mica concentrates that contain more than 90 percent mica. This research is being carried out pursuant to the Bureau's objective to develop technology that will help maintain an adequate supply of minerals and metals to meet national economic and strategic needs. Researchers used a Bureau-designed system of crushers, screens, and zig-zag air classifiers to concentrate coarse liberated mica particles from mica-bearing materials. This pneumatic system was used to concentrate four mica ores from Arizona, North Carolina, and South Dakota and three waste tailings from Alabama, Georgia, and South Dakota. Using these samples, it was demonstrated that plus 65-mesh size mica can be effectively recovered by the pneumatic method. Not only were the concentrates high in mica content; it was also demonstrated that this method can be used to recover up to 78 percent of the mica that was originally contained in the samples. Because it is a dry concentration method, the pneumatic beneficiation technique may be advantageous in areas where water resources are limited.

Fourteen straight-run asphalts were prepared in the laboratory from bitumens obtained from three sources: (1) native bitumen from Rozel Point, Utah, (2). bitumen extracted from Athabaska bituminous sandstone at Canada, and (3) bitumen extracted from Edna bituminous sandstone outcropping in San Luis Obispo County, to seven asphalts with penetrations ranging from 19 to 287 at 77 F. were prepared from each of the bitumens. The yields of the prepared asphalts ranged from 74.5 percent for a 27-penetration asphalt from the Athabaska bitumen to 99.5 percent for a 271-penetration asphalt from the Rozel Point bitumen.

A prediction for oil recovery from a pilot waterflood in the Kane oil- field, located in Elk, Forest, and McKean Counties, Pa., was made and compared to actual field performance. Water-injection and production histories, well logs, other field data, and results from laboratory tests of core material were used in this analysis. Performance of the pilot waterflood, initiated in January 1963, was predicted using a modified Craig, Geffen, and Morse calculation technique. Maximum recovery from this low permeable, preferentially oil-wet formation was predicted to be about 22,500 barrels of oil after 300,000 barrels of water had been injected into the pilot waterflood area. After additional field data were collected it became necessary to reevaluate the pilot waterflood area. The gas saturation prior to the waterflood was estimated to have been 20 percent, based on an assumption regarding the required volume of water injected to initiate oil production. In view of the actual field performance, a gas saturation of 13 percent is indicated. When this gas saturation and the method originally proposed by Craig and others are used) the predicted results are more representative. In December 1965, field performance was further analyzed using a hyperbolic-decline curve as presented by Arps. Based upon this evaluation method, the pilot water flood in the Kane sand should produce 37,000 to 42,000 barrels of oil with the injection of 300,000 barrels of water into the pattern. By continuing this secondary-recovery project to a reasonable economic limit, ultimate oil recovery may be as much as 50,000 to 55,000 barrels, or 129 to 142 barrels per acre-foot from 36.5 acres.

"We report that two different micropolystyrene round beads linked to either luminol or lucigenin have been developed. The 1-µ.m-diameter beads arc useful reagents that allow one to perform chemiluminescent (light producing) phagoeytic reactions without opsonization. It is known that luminol reacts with peroxidases (e.g., myeloperoxidase) while lucigenin reacts mainly with superoxide anion. Luminol and lucigenin beads produce cellular chemiluminescence (CL) with neutrophils, macrophages, monocytes, and differentiated human promyelocytic leukemic cells (HL60). When myeloperoxidase (MPO) is present luminol beads evoke higher CL from neutrophils, but when little or no MPO is present, lucigenin beads produce higher amounts of light. Lucigenin beads appear to be active inside these cells where unbound lucigenin does not enter freely.INTRODUCTIONA variety of cells, e.g., neutrophils (Ns) and macrophages (Ms), can engulf foreign particles (1). This engulfing or phagocytic activity is used by the body to kill bacteria and to eliminate foreign particles such as respirable dusts, e.g., coal, silica, or cotton. The neutrophil engulfs or phagocytizes bacteria which are coated with plasma antibodies and/or complement proteins (Fig. 1). The coating or opsonization allows the neutrophil to recognize foreign substances. Usually the absence of opsonization prevents the cell's recognition of a foreign particle and the particle is not phagocytized. Macrophages, particularly the alveolar Oung) cells, do not require opsonization for phagocytosis. Ms should not be selective toward individual dusts because they serve a major role in eliminating a variety of these.Particle size can also be a factor. Usually a particle with a diameter of 0.5-5 µ.m is considered in the respirable range. Larger particles are trapped before they reach the alveoli Oung spaces where oxygen exchange with blood occurs), ·and smaller particles do not generally settle, and are not engulfed by macrophages (2). Tabato and Ikada (3) found that maximal phagocytosis of microspheres takes place when their diameter is in the range of 1.0 to 2.0 µ.m. In addition, they found that beads with hydrophobic surfaces were more readily phagocytized than hydrophilic surfaces."

"We have reported previously that crushing or grinding crystalline silica results in the generation of silica-based radicals on the particulate surface and that these radicals can generate hydroxyl radicals in aqueous solution. Data in the present study indicate that freshly ground silica is more cytotoxic and is a more potent activator of alveolar macrophages than comparably sized aged silica. That is, compared to aged silica, fresh silica is 4.2-fold more potent in decreasing the membrane integrity of macro· phages; is 50% more potent in activating hydrogen peroxide secretion by macro· phages; and is 4.frfold more potent in stimulating cellular chemiluminescence. Prosil 28, an organosilane material, is an effective coating agent for fresh silica. It decreases the cytotoxicity of fresh silica by as much as 78% and decreases the ability of fresh silica to induce chemiluminescence from alveolar macrophages by 58%. The data suggest that surface radicals associated with freshly cleaved dust may be an important factor in the induction of pulmonary disease. Furthermore, treating dust with coating agents may substantially decrease toxicity. INTRODUCTIONThe U.S. Department of Labor estimates that over 1.25 million American workers may be exposed to crystalline silica and that nearly 60,000 may be at risk of developing some degree of occupational lung disease (Parkes, 1982; Peters, 1986). Occupations of concern include miners, stone quarry workers, sand and gravel workers, sandblasters, foundry workers, and glass workers. Acute silicosis is characterized by inflammation, alveolar lipoproteinosis, and the rapid development of respiratory disability (Banks, 1986). In contrast, chronic silicosis develops 20-40 yr after initial exposure and is characterized by the appearance of concentric hyalinized nodular lesions and the progressive development of dyspnea (Parkes, 1982; Ziskind et al., 1976)."

The purpose of this investigation was to develop a practical feeder apparatus to introduce comparatively large pieces of coal and similar material into a pipeline under pressure in connection with the vertical hydraulic transportation of solids , termed " hydraulic hoisting . " This method of hoisting the precrushed run - of - mine product of an underground mine has been given unusually wide attention abroad and could be of considerable significance to the U.S. mining industry in its search for operating improvements and cost reduction . A lock-hopper assembly was developed after a series of sinking velocity tests were made by dropping anthracite in a column of water . The system functioned reliably as an automatically operated feeder apparatus .

"A study has been made of the surface properties of coals of differing ranks, in their natural state and as modified by the addition of collectors. The evaluation of their surface properties has been done by captive bubble contact angles, water and methylene iodide sessile drop contact angles, zeta potential, point-of-zero charge (PZC) shift, and flotation. .changes in the hydrophobicity of coal is a function of both the rank of the coal and the collecting reagent.INTRODUCTIONThe chemical and physical properties of a raw coal will determine its response to a given beneficiation process. .For such processes as flotation, filtration, flocculation, dispersion, handling, dust supression and agglomeration, however, it is also necessary to consider the surface properties of the coal and mineral matter constitutents of the raw coal. In the case of a specific particle to be floated, it is also necessary to consider the properties of the coal as modified by the addition of some reagent designed to modify (usually increase) the hydrophobicity of the coal surface. General properties of the coal have been well summarized by Van Krevelen (1) and Elliott (2), while the data for the surface properties of coal are much more scattered in the literature (see, e.g.: Parekh and Aplan (3), Gutierrez-Rodrigues et al. (4), Aplan (5), Arnold and Aplan (6), Hogg and Chander (7) and Rosenbaum and Fuerstenau (8)). While a knowledge of the inherent surface properties of a sample are important, of much greater practical significance are the properties of the particle in the presence of a reagent, such as a collector, designed to enhance the hydrophobicity of the particle. This study will focus on the surface properties of coals of various ranks in the presence of a variety of collectors."

A gravimetric method for the determination of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, methane, and oxygen in blast furnace top gas is described. Nitrogen may be determined directly by volume measurement or by difference. The method is direct, permits continuous as sampling, and provides an averaged analysis over a selected range of sampling intervals from 1/2 to 24 hr or more. Neither expensive equipment nor specialized personnel are required. The method is suitable for routine analysis, and the results compare favorably with those obtained by established methods.

This report summarizes the cost of U.S, mining and milling industry compliance with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) interim water quality guidelines for waste discharges. Applicable excerpts from Public Law 92-500 are stated and interpreted in conjunction with the guidelines being used for implementation of the law. Over 200 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers applications for discharge permits were used to develop the quality and quantity data base needed to estimate the cost to comply with EPA guidelines, Cost of three basic treatment methods were considered: Aeration, addition of lime, and sedimentation. From the process design, cost-capacity graphs were developed to consider maximum flow rate, maxi lime addition, and average flow rates. The graphical method used in this evaluation should provide a reasonable guide to the effect of waste treatment and, therefore, Public Law 92-500 and corresponding EPA guidelines on the mineral processing industry. The cost of complying with the EPA guidelines will have the effect of prompting the mining industry to minimize the production of waste water and of undertaking some additional treatment, Two case studies are presented to illustrate efforts that might be fruitful for minimizing waste water production and for treatment of combinations of acid mine drainage, mill wastes, and metallurgical process wastes when treatment is deemed necessary.

"Summary: In this report the differential regulation of NF-KB and nitric oxide (NO) was investigated in the mouse macrophage cell line RAW 264.7 following exposure to a mineral dust (silica) and /or an endotoxin (Lipopolysaccharide, LPS). The results indicated that silica and LPS can significantly induce the activation of NF-KB as well as elicit enhanced production of NO in RAW 264.7 cells as part of an early inflammatory response mechanism. A 24-hour time-course study showed that NO release from these cells continued to increase following the initial stimulus by LPS or silica. In contrast, activation of NF-KB was maximal at 6 hours and then showed a steady decline to 24 hours. The production of NO was suppressed by protease inhibitor and antioxidant, both of which block the activation of NF-KB. Surprisingly, the use of an NO synthase inhibitor resulted in an enhancement of NF-JCB activation. These findings suggest that NO produced in macrophage cells in response to an inflammatory stimulus like silica or LPS my be linked to a negative feedback role on the activation of NF-KB. It is now accepted that nitric oxide (NO) plays a pivotal role in the inflammation response process when macrophage cells are activated by a pro-inflammatory stimulus (l). Production of NO is dependent on the activity of the enzyme nitric oxide synthase (NOS). Up until now, at least three distinct genes have been described which encode different isoforms of NOS. NOS has been cloned from a variety of different mammalian cells, including constitutive neuron NOS, constitutive endothelium NOS and inducible NOS (2). Macrophages appear to be the principal cellular source for the inducible form of NOS (iNOS) activated in response to an inflammatory producing event. The mechanisms subserving the regulation of the iNOS gene and NO production have been under intense investigation in recent years (3-5). The vapor pressures of tungsten (VI ) chloride ( WC1 ) and hafnium ( IV ) iodide ( HFI ) were measured by a metal diaphragm technique . Vapor pressure values were obtained to permit calculation of the thermodynamic properties of the vaporization processes of the compounds . The vapor pressure data of WC16 are represented by the following equations for the liquid , B - solid , and a- solid over the temperature intervals indicated : - log P = 8.194 3,253 /T Liquid , 281.5 ° to 325 ° C : B - solid 230.0 ° to 281.5 ° C : log P a - solid 185.0 ° to 230.0 ° C : log Pam *** = 8.794 - 3,588 / T = 9.615 - 3,996 /T where T is the absolute temperature in degrees Kelvin . The heats of vaporization and sublimation are 14.9 , 16.4 , and 18.3 kcal / g mole , respectively . The entropy of vaporization at the normal boiling point , 330 ° C , was 24.3 eu . The fusion temperature , 281.5 ° C , and transition temperatures , 230.0 ° and 185 ° C , were found by thermal analysis .

It parallels a previous report of the Bureau of Mines on slate roofing.Available Forms of Zinc RoofingZinc is available for roofing in three forms: 1. As sheet zinc which may be used advantageously on roofs with as flat a pitch as 1 in 4; laid with standing seam construction for small roofs and with batten construction for large roofs. 2. As corrugate sheets, in widths up to 40 inches and in lengths up to 8 and feet, available for siding and roofing in industrial buildings (with certain re¬strict ions) and or farm buildings (without restrictions). 3. In the form of shingles.Advantages of Zinc Roofing1. Zinc is a permeant roofing material; that is, when suited to the conditions, and properly applied to a roof designed with the right purlin spacing it will outlast the building and still have a salvage value equal to a least half the original material cost. It is applicable to a wide range of conditions, from the most expensive to the cheapest type of construction, and is not greatly above the cheaper materials in first cost. A permanent roof of simple outline need not cost over $15 to $25 per square (100 square feet), depending upon the method of construction required a corrugated sheet roof for industrial purposes or for farm use need not cost over $15 per square for ordinary conditions. 3. Corrugated zinc sheets have the distinct advantage of being available for re-use and re-construction if handled with ordinary care. 4. Zinc oxidizes to a certain point, building up a strong protective coating which in time effectually checks further oxidation; thus it does not oxidize to the point of destruction as steel does, 5. Three of the test methods frequently used for the determination of moisture in the analysis sample of coal were employed in analyzing a series of coals ranging in rank from anthracite to lignite . For most coals , the variation between the three methods are within the tolerances allowed between duplicate determinations by the same method . The processing variables studied included atmosphere , flow rate of atmosphere , inert atmospheres , oven temperatures , heating time , exposure of the dried coal to laboratory air , and surface area of the test sample . Unless close control is kept on these variables , erratic results will be obtained .

A corporation engaged in milling- and the reduction of ores deposited the tailings therefrom upon a portion of its own land lying in a gulch through which water flows at times in great volumes and with great force' and notwithstanding all reasonable efforts by dams and otherwise to retain its tailings, the tailings eventually were forced upon the lands of an adjoining owner; these tailings were valuable and their retreatment, intended by the mill owner, profitable; and the fact that the tailings were so washed down upon the lands of the adjoining owner and permitted to accumulate and remain for some considerable time is not sufficient to show an abandonment on the part of the owner of the tailings, where it is clear that the owner had no intention of so doing, but on the contrary, always intended to conserve and retreat the tailings.

Since man first mined underground, there has been need for adequate illumination; this need has never been fully supplied. At first, suitable lamps were not available. Gradually they have been developed, but along with that development the need for better and better lamps has continued owing to the following conditions and factors: 1. Increasing hazards from gas and dust ignitions. 2. The speeding of operations with mechanized mining, which necessitates greater visibility. 3. A demand that cleaner coal be loaded, which requires higher levels of illumination. 4. The cost of compensation for injuries that has created a demand for better illumination and safer lamps. Use of better lamps has been retarded by: 1. Prejudice and resistance to change on the part of the workers in some districts. 2. The cost and upkeep of the lamps. 3. The present types of lamps, while a great improvement over the old lamps, do not entirely fulfill the requirements for a safe and efficient light for underground workers.

"Dust control in high-production longwalls requires attention to operating practices and ventilation schemes. Several studies have shown that the shearer is the major source of dust on a longwall face. Support movement has not been regarded as a major source of dust in US longwalls. Yet, under certain conditions, 31% of the shearer operator's dust exposure can be due to support movement.Several methods have been developed for the control of shield-generated dust. But the need for better methods is apparent. In this paper, the amount of airborne, respirable dust generated per shield move is estimated from specially designed experiments on longwall faces. Ten experiments were conducted on five longwall faces in four mines. Each experiment involved one face visit and lasted three to six hours. The contribution of shield movement to the airborne, respirable dust concentration immediately downwind of the shield move varied between 0.12 and 1.75 mg/m3 in the five longwall faces. The mass of airborne, respirable dust gener-ated by shield movement was found to vary between 39 and 386 mg per shield move. The results from this study reveal that control of dust from longwall shields requires a combi-nation of approaches involving alternative operating prac-tices, reducing shield dust generation rate, increasing face air flow and decreasing personnel exposure.IntroductionIn 1992, longwall mining accounted for about 36% of US underground coal production, a 240% increase from a decade ago. The absolute longwall tonnages were 46 and 133 Mt (51 and 146 million st), respectively. Compared with room-and¬pillar mining systems, the longwall mining system is charac¬terized by higher recovery, enhanced safety and higher pro¬ductivity.However, personnel dust exposure on a longwall face is higher than in other types of mining. According to Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA) data, fewer longwalls were in continuous compliance with the applicable dust standard in 1992 than in 1989.Controlling shearer-generated dust and reduction of per-sonnel exposure to airborne dust have commanded attention in the design of longwall faces, operational practices and ventilation schemes. Studies in the United States and abroad have revealed that support-generated dust can be a major obstacle to compliance under certain conditions (Becker et al., 1989; Bradley et al., 1983; Jankowski and Organiscak, 1983; Jankowski et al., 1990; Organiscak et al., 1985)."

The purpose of this Bureau of Mines investigation was primarily to isolate and examine the effect of liquid content upon the apparent porosity and bulk density of compacts pressed from high-purity, fused aluminum oxide, and, secondarily, to study the actual mechanism by which the liquid content affects the bulk density. No attempt was made to approach the theoretical maximum density of the oxide by introducing additives, particle packings, or similar variables; instead this study is an intercomparison of the bulk densities obtained as functions of the water contents of the compacting mixtures. Water content was varied from 7 percent to 25 percent, on a total-weight basis. The data gathered indicated a well-defined optimum water content for obtaining minimum apparent porosity and maximum bulk density, under the conditions of the experiment. During the course of this study, a number of additional variables in the forming process were discovered and are introduced in this report, although a thorough evaluation was found to be beyond the scope of this present investigation.

A study of the combustion emission products of rigid ventilation ducting was completed by the U.S. Bureau of Mines. The ducting was composed of fiberglass-reinforced polyester resin. Four properties of the ducting were evaluated: (1) propensity to ignite, (2) smoke characteristics, (3) gas emissions, and (4) heat release. Particle sizes, obscuration, optical densities, and production constants for gas and smoke were also calculated. These results provide comprehensive data about the emission products, detectability, and relative hazards of fiberglass-reinforced plastic ducting and other mine combustibles under realistic fire conditions.
