The content of the book covers: (1) The theory of the Eötvös torsion balance; derivation of the working formulas; description of the instrument; method of observation; relation of the magnitudes observed to the lines of force and the level surfaces of gravity; corrections or normal effects, near and distance terrane; subterranean effects; effects due to certain mathematical bodies. (2) Notes on the practical employment of the Eötvös torsion balance; initial testing of the instrument and of accessories; hints on planning the survey; work at the station site; office computation and plotting of results; the interpretation of the results: (3) A description of the instrument and instructions for its manipulation. This book was the best discussion in English on the theory and use of the Eötvös torsion balance and is surpassed only by a later paper by the same authors that covers much of the same ground. The book is suitable for a textbook for beginners, and advanced students will find it of use. It should be available as a reference book in all geological libraries and in all torsion balance department offices.

The Pennsylvania anthracite region is composed of four fields, namely, the Northern, Eastern Middle, Western Middle, and Southern. It is in the eastern part of Pennsylvania and is shown on figure 1. The anthracite industry is confronted with a crucial problem of inundation by water impounded in underground pools in many mines and by infiltration of water from streams and pools on the surface (3). The deposits of anthracite in the United States are limited virtually to Pennsylvania, and the difficulties of this industry have been commonly considered as a State problem rather than a national one (1, 4, 6, 7). Anthracite was discovered in Pennsylvania in 1762, and the first mining company was formed in 1793. It was not until 1812 that anthracite began to receive recognition in the Philadelphia market as a domestic fuel, and by 1838 the annual production was nearly 1 million net tons. Since anthracite mining began, mine water has become progressively more difficult and costly to handle because of the extraction of anthracite both underground and along the outcrops of the beds, until at the present time mine drainage is a major anthracite-mining problem. Mine water is handled at the anthracite mines as follows: (a) by pumping, (b) by drainage tunnels, (c) by combination of pumping and drainage tunnels, and (d) by water hoists (hoisting water by means of large buckets) (4, 5,6, 7). This paper covers removal of the water from mines by means of pumping plants. Pumping is indispensable in the production of anthracite (5). The cost of pumping mine water has increased progressively since anthracite mining began. Some collieries have been forced to discontinue mining because of the high cost of pumping.

In response to increasing national energy requirements. highlighted by the continuing growth in demand for coal for the generation of electric power the output of bituminous coal and lignite in 1965 passed the 500-million-ton mark for the first time since 1956, thus emphasizing the steady up-ward trend from the recent low of 403 million tons in 1961. There were corresponding upward trends in consumption, exports mechanization, and productivity. Production.-The output of bituminous coal and lignite in the United States in 1965-512 million tons-was 5 percent greater than the 487 million tons produced in 1964. The gain was attributed largely to expanded consumption by the electric utilities, greater use at coke ovens, and an increase in exports.

Laboratory tests were conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines to determine respirable dust reduction effectiveness of and interaction between face airflow and water sprays for a continuous miner. Increases in exhausting face ventilation from 3,000 to 9,000 cfm, in waterflow from 15 to 35 gpm, and in water nozzle operating pressure from 80 to 200 psi were evaluated. Results indicated that airflow had the greatest individual impact on reducing dust levels, with concentrations at return and operator sampling locations reduced by as much as 57% and 99%, respectively. Regression modeling was utilized to predict dust concentrations over the range of values tested for the control parameters. Interactions between the control parameters were significant and often defined an optimum level where further increases in that parameter failed to produce additional dust reductions. Increasing airflow to 8,400 cfm, waterflow to 25 gpm, and water pressure to 140 psi typically reduced dust concentrations at operator and return locations. Application of a control parameter above these levels can provide additional dust reductions if used in conjunction with appropriate levels of the other two control parameters. Otherwise, higher operator dust levels may result and can be attributed to increased rollback and/or airflow turbulence.

Brief history of photography Silver- based photographic materials are made for many applications that require different photochemical and physical response characteristics and a wide variety of formats and sizes. All of these products are laminates consisting of a surface-treated support and bonded gelatin layers. Two basic types predominate - films and papers. Films have transparent or translucent plastic supports (mostly cellulose tri-acetate and polyester), while papers have mostly a paper core coated with polyethylene resin layers on both sides (RC type). The front layer contains white titanium dioxide to provide high reflectivity and the back layer a matting agent. However, a few so-called fiber base papers are still supplied. These have a high quality paper base coated with a baryta layer ; i.e. a gelatin layer containing white barium sulfate. The manufacture of photographic film and paper supports requires special procedures and equipment, because of the severe requirements for chemical purity, optical integrity and uniformity (see Table 1 on page 10 for a list of the principal makers of film and paper supports).

This volume is the third of a four-volume final report on research carried out under a contract from the U.S. Bureau of Mines on the development of a computer simulation model for surface mine reclamation planning. The other volumes are titled as follows: Volume I: Ore Reserve Estimation, Volume II: Dragline Model, and Volume IV: User's Manual for OPMHS/2. The Mine Coordinate Generator System serves as an interface between the Geology and Reserves System (Volume I, final report) and OPMHS/2 (Volume IV, final report) to provide local mine grid information which is used as input to the decision making process and dynamic simulation routines of OPMHS/2. After the Geology and Reserves System has been successfully run for a property, a data base containing values for each grid cell covering the property is created at the end of execution, if chosen as an option by the user. The Mine Coordinate Generator reads this information and creates a special direct access data set from the sequential data input. When information defining the mine grid is read, the values present in the property grid are for the interpolation of values for each mine block.

Sixty-one fatal accidents were reported in the mines of Alabama during 1930. This number is a decrease of 15 per cent as compared with 1929; however, production was 13 per cent and the man-hours worked were 16 per cent less than in the previous year. There were 21,731 men employed inside and 3,386 outside. Table 1 gives the comparative rates per million tons and per million man-hours for the United States and for Alabama for 1929 and 1930. These rates are based on figures published by the State and by the United States Bureau of Mines, with preliminary figures for 1930. (These sources of data are used throughout this paper.)

The performance of a novel prototype kerf-cutting impact mining machine was evaluated under a cooperative agreement between the U.S. Bureau of Mines and RAMEX Systems, Bellevue, WA, while operating under conditions typical of normal tunnel entry development. Selected operating parameters were monitored concurrently to determine baseline operating conditions and to study relationships between operating parameters. Using the data obtained, the specific energy requirements of the impact mining machine were calculated and compared to specific energy requirements of tunnel boring machines cutting in rock having similar hardness. Tests results indicate that the kerf-cutting impact mining machine can provide a mechanical means for mining very hard rock that cannot be effectively mined using commercially available mechanical excavators.

The material published in this report is part of a special study of some of the chemical and physical properties of Alabama coals. The complete study included friability and grindability determinations, high and low temperature assay distillation tests, and ash fusion-temperature determinations. Proximate and ultimate analyses and. calorific values of the coal samples also were obtained. This paper is concerned only with grindabilities, although proximate analyses have been included to give a better picture of the problem as a whole. The growing interest in grindabilities of coals is a result of the increase in use of pulverized fuel in REscent years. The tenative ball-mill grindability method D409-35T4/was used in making all the determinations. The method of sampling and the technic of the testing procedure is described in Considerable detail in this report because the procedure was established quite recently. The ball-Mill grindability index is a measure of the ease with which coal may be ground, which may be an important factor in estimating pulverizing costs. Up to the present time few data on the grindability of Alabama coals have been published. The data in this paper show that the Warrior and Cahaba fields exhibit a wide range of grindability in their coals. The mines tested are well distributed throughout the productive areas of these fields, and it is possible to make rough estimates of the grindabilities of coals not listed in this report from the data given for mines situated in the same vicinity. The steel industry consumes most of it, but as the Mineral is the chief source of fluorine, it is becoming increasingly valuable to the chemical industry in the production of fluorine compounds The development of nontoxic organic fluorides for use as refrigerants in mechanical refrigeration and air-conditioning units illustrates the increasing use of fluorspar in the chemical industry. Most domestic flurospar comes from deposits in the Illinois-Kentucky district, which centers around Rosiclare, Ill. About a dozen companies operate in the district, which comprises parts of Pope and Hardin Counties in southern Illinois and Crittenden, Livingston, and Caldwell Counties in western Kentucky. According to the latest available statistics, this district supplied 1/5,960 short tons of fluorspar in 1937, compared with the total domestic production of 181,230 tons. Imports totaled 37,063 tons.

"The Riley tungsten property of the Northern Nevada Mining Co. was examined by the Bureau of Mines in August 1943, and from February 22 to August 22, 1945, the property was explored by the Bureau.Riley mine, which comprises 60 acres, is in sec. 9, T. 38 N., R. 42 E., Mount Diablo base and meridian, in the Potosi Mining District, on the east slope of the Osgood Range in eastern Humboldt County, Nevada. J. S. Riley is president of Northern Nevada Mining Co., the general offices of which are at 29 East First Street, Reno, Nev.Winnemucca, Nev., 42 miles southwest of the mine and on the main line of the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads and U. S. Highway 40, is the nearest supply center. The post office for the Potosi district is 15 miles south at Red House, Nev., a station on the Southern Pacific and Western Pacific Railroads. A good dirt road, which leaves U. S Highway 40 about 15 miles east of Winnemucca, extends northeast to the property.Tungsten occurs as scheelite in a characteristic Nevada contact-metamorphic tactite deposit between limestone and granodiorite Fifteen diamond-drill holes were completed for a total length of 2,630 feet.In its program of exploration of mineral deposits, the Bureau of Mines has as its primary objective the more effective utilization of our mineral resources, to the end that they make the greatest possible contribution to national security and economy. It is the policy of the Bureau to publish the facts developed by each exploratory project as soon as practicable after its conclusion. The Mining Branch, Lowell B. Moon, chief, conducts preliminary examinations, performs the actual exploratory work, and prepares the final report. The Metallurgical Branch, R. G. Hazards in connection with the use of compressed-air jets for ventilating gassy mines are given little consideration by most mine officials largely because compressed air is considered the safest means of transmitting power for operating various types of mining machinery, and the inherent dangers in its use for this purpose are virtually negligible . The installation of compressed-air lines in coal mines leads to the utilization of compressed air for ventilating working places , with the result that , although the primary ventilation systems may be adequate to meet existing needs , proper conduction of normal ventilation has been neglected , so the working faces receive only a small amount ofthe total air circulated through the mine . Reliance in part on compressed air or other auxiliary means for ventilation is always attended by danger that gas will accumulate , due to intermittent operation , and the tendency is to operate auxiliary schemes only. during the working shift ( or possibly only part of the shift ) and to dispense with them during off- shifts or at times during the working shift when gas may accumulate because of lack of ventilation . When the men come on shift the auxiliary ventilating device often may be started without a preliminary examination of the working place , or .. the examination may be made sometime before the oncoming shift arrives , the gas being allowed to accumulate in the meantime. This may result in uncontrolled movement of a body of gas if proper precautions are not taken . Several mine explosions have been caused by the movement of a known body of gas by compressed air into the haulageway, where it was ignited by an arc from a passing locomotive . This danger is more pronounced where supervision is lax .

This report, the fourth in an annual series, outlines recent trends and developments in the minerals industry. Discussed are new methods, equipment, techniques, and systems used to more effectively extract and process mineral products. Environmental considerations, health and safety standards, price controls, inflation, material shortages, and more dependence on foreign imports were problems faced by the minerals industry. Although productivity increased for most mineral commodities, the annual rate of increase has slowed in recent years, indicating a maturing technological situation. Growing concern for energy resulted in increased interest and research in alternative fuel sources. The primary concerns of metallurgists were pollution control and improved efficiency and performance of metallurgical processes, especially for reduction of energy consumption.

In research conducted by the U.S. Bureau of Mines, platinum-group metal (PGM) flotation concentrate from the Stillwater Complex, MT, was subjected to biooxidation using Thiobacillus ferrooxidans in an effort to break down the sulfide minerals and liberate the associated PGM's for subsequent chemical leaching. Bacterial preleaching oxidized up to 94 pct of the sulfide present, destroyed the PGM-bearing pentlandite [(Ni,Fe)9S8] mineralization, and dissolved most of the nickel in the concentrate. Cyanidation at 80° C proved to be the most attractive chemical leachant, removing 34 pct of the platinum, 76 pct of the palladium, 94 pct of the rhodium, and 97 pct of the gold from the biooxidized concentrate. Research also indicated that increased sulfide oxidation during the preleach phase led to improved PGM recovery in the subsequent chemical leaching phase.

This paper, describing the concentrator practice of the United Verde Copper Co., is one of a series being prepared by the Bureau of HISTORY The United Verde concentrator was constructed in accordance with recommendations based on certain novel reasons which were quite different from those usually justifying the expenditure of such an amount. Concentrator operations started in March, 1927, although the metallurgical staff had considered for several years the eventual addition of a concentrator department.

In 1980, the Bureau of Mines investigated the northern Darby Mountains on the Seward Peninsula, AK, for radioactive mineral deposits. Uranium is concentrated in silicified shear zones in biotite quartz monzonite of the Darby pluton. The shear zones are best exposed in steep, narrow, avalanche gullies; they are characterized by radiometric anomalies and by uranium and thorium geochemical anomalies. Radiometric and geochemical anomalies are also found over altered biotite quartz monzonite where there are no visible shear zones. The radiometric and uranium anomalies are often spatially, but apparently not genetically, associated with alkaline mafic and felsic dikes. Similar geochemical and radiometric anomalies over discolored altered zones and geochemical anomalies in sediments downstream from the altered zones indicate that additional areas may also be favorable targets for uranium deposits. Analyses of panned, heavy mineral concentrates show no significant concentrations of uranium or thorium in resistant heavy minerals. This indicates that radioactive elements in the Darby pluton are concentrated in soluble, nonresistant minerals that may constitute a recoverable uranium resource.

This report on the state of the art of horizontal boring technology for underground power transmission installations was prepared by the Bureau of Mines at the request of the Department of the Interior. This paper describes the different machines and methods used in augering, impacting, pushing, drilling, and machine tunneling horizontal holes through soil and rock. A review of the borehole survey and guidance tools and techniques applicable to these methods is also given. Nonboring methods used for emplacement of power distribution and transmission lines are briefly discussed. The paper ends with a brief technical forecast, an analytical summary of the state of the art, and recommendations based on power industry needs. Horizontal boring techniques for power distribution lines installation are adequate to meet the requirements of the power industry, particularly where such burial involves relatively short distances in soil or soft rock. For burying power transmission lines, particularly in the harder rocks and over relatively long distances, horizontal boring methods are not as well advanced. Research and development as well as economic incentives to equipment manufacturers could substantially improve the state of the art. Obstacle detection and guidance systems for directing boreholes to specified targets need major improvements to meet the requirements of the power industry for underground burial of distribution and transmission lines

The Bureau of Mines has been active in promoting the purchase of coal for Government use under specifications that define the requirements in terms of heating value of the coal, expressed in British thermal units, and the composition as shown by proximate analyses. To these, when required, are added the ash-softening temperature, the free-swelling index, and the Hardgrove grindability index. Under most of these specification contracts the bidders guarantee the quality of the coal, and that guaranteed by the successful bidder becomes the standard of his contract. The deliveries are sampled in accordance with instructions3 issued by the Bureau of Mines; the samples are analyzed in the Bureau laboratory to determine whether the coal is of the quality guaranteed by the contractor; if it is not, a price adjustment is made. Analyses of the delivered coal and tipple samples (samples collected at mine tipples as coal is being loaded into railroad cars or trucks) provide valuable data for use in evaluating future bids. In addition, the continuous sampling of coal as delivered is a check on the practical results obtained in burning the coal.
